FOUNDERS’ LETTER This season has been a busy one at Wolf & Badger. We have grown our team to over twenty people and the business continues from strength to strength. The dedication of everyone working within our office and stores has been incredible and a shared focus on becoming the de facto destination to discover the very best up-and-coming luxury brands has become a reality. We have recently merged with our largest direct competitor – Boticca.com – who have long shared our vision of how retail ought to work: it is the designers and brands themselves that should hold the power of their destinies, not outdated retailers with their outmoded purchasing models and often punitive payment terms. As a combined business we have massively strengthened our curated product offering, geographical reach and brand awareness, this is to the benefit of the carefully selected network of member brands with which we work and also great for our fabulous and loyal customer-base. Whether this is your first time at Wolf & Badger or your thousandth, we want to thank you for your ongoing support.

INTERVIEW
in tro ducin g LO UISE What is LOUISE all about? LOUISE is focused towards a younger customer, aged 20-35. I think there is something quite boyish about it, but it’s feminine at the same time. I aim for a reinvented classicism and a contrast between different inspirations. I am a big fan of lurex materials, but I only like to use it combined with an opposing type of fabric, such as raw linen or cotton. In the case of LOUISE, it is this combination and juxtaposition that produces unique quality and is the essence of the label.
LOUISE Autumn/Winter ‘15 Collection
LOUISE £130 LOUISE £110
Liz Louise Breider graduated from the styling Academy Artemis in Amsterdam in 2009 and went on to work as a fashion designer for many different brands, including My Brand, Picture Perfect, and ID&T. This background provided her with enough experience and knowledge in both the commercial and indie fashion scene to create her own label “LOUISE”.
How has the brand evolved? I grew up always knowing that I wanted to be a designer, but I did not know it would lead to starting my own label until about one year ago. My last job was for ID&T, I stopped working there more or less two years ago. Something inside me knew it was time to start something up for myself. I went to Spain for two months to figure out what to do next; it was there that I realised my desire to start my own label. I started designing my first collection and before I knew it, I was on a plane to Istanbul making it happen. What inspired the Autumn/Winter ‘15 collection? With fit and quality in focus, the thin, but boyish silhouette is a trademark of LOUISE Autumn/Winter ‘15. The cut is edgy but simple. This collection is influenced by the contrast of fabrics and western elements, I use the finest fabrics for simple everyday wear. I wanted to give the former bohemian girl a somewhat mannish makeover with an outing of oversized and slouchy blouses and jackets. The LOUISE woman kept a feminine touch in the form of lurex materials in blouses and dresses combined with unexpected chequered cotton fabrics and leather elements. What is the best thing about running your own company?

I’m doing everything with my heart and soul! Working in an industry I enjoy and am passionate about, helps me to handle it when I face downtimes. Owning my own business allows me to be creative, which gives me a feeling of great satisfaction, a feeling that I missed the last few years when I was working for someone else. I don’t have a design team or use photographers to shoot my lookbook; everything is really coming from me and I think that’s what I like the most.

TRENDS
How did you begin the design process? Inspiration can come from anywhere and anything. It is what’s around me. It can be a song, or even what natural light can do to everything. I just take pieces of things that I like and add them to my inspiration board. From here I start to create a story out of what I see and I try to understand what it means.
Your Autumn/Winter need to know
How does it feel seeing your collection come together? This is one of the best feelings in the world. It is very easy to draw my creations on paper, but bringing them into reality is the hardest part of the process. Especially as a young designer, I’m not yet in the position to work with the people or the ateliers that I eventually hope to work with.
We’ve bid a sad ‘farewell’ to summer for another year, and while for some, this is almost as heart breaking as splitting up with a significant other; I on the other hand am looking forward to the new season ahead. As soon as the summer sales are over I start the hunt; for the perfect pair of ankle boots that I will wear with everything I own, for the new knitwear brand that will have me feeling like I’m walking around wearing a giant hug, for ground breaking trends to tackle and for new collections to drop in stores. So here’s a handy little guide with everything you need to know for Autumn/Winter ‘15.
What is your favourite piece from the collection?
Words by Emma Foreman.
My favourite piece of the collection is by far the western inspired blouse with the lurex back, named ‘Ade’. This item gives the most accurate image of the collection.
Jewellery brandS to be seen with
The hardest part of my job is the feeling of self doubt in not being creative enough. It’s a feeling of insecurity that is vicious and sometimes hard to shake.
I use Instagram a lot, I would say that is definitely my favourite form of social media in terms of posting new content and getting inspired. I’m a big fan of these Amsterdam girls: @nikkimarinus, @zoshazofia, @felicefleur @florianfch. They are all muses for LOUISE and that’s the main reason for wanting to capture these women. Beside these girls I am in love with the instagram of @4thandbleeker, @sahara_ray, @giizeleoliveira, @purienne_ How would you describe your style?
Astrid & Miyu
Who do you stalk on Instagram?
Less is definitely more when it comes to jewellery, and this autumn will see the rise of cool contemporary jewellery brands taking over the accessories scene. It’s the type of jewellery that you will put on once and never take off because it goes with every single thing you own. Simple, polished metals stacked up high; Tada & Toy, Astrid & Miyu and Mew are the brands nailing the trend.
Micro trend Last winter it was all about oversized polo-neck dresses worn with thigh high boots, whereas this winter will see the unlikely trend of cricket jumpers popping up everywhere. A chunky cable knit with the perfect deep v neckline and an all-important stripe. Rumour London is ahead of the game with their Wimbledon cashmere sweaters, find yours in our Dover Street store.
Gem&i
My style is very bohemian and ethnic inspired. I love to wear colour and prints, but I also love to wear a very minimalistic outfit. Style is an expression, it all has to do with my state of mind and actually it is very diverse. How would you describe the LOUISE woman?
Rumour London
What is the hardest part of your job?
Tada & Toy
Amsterdam is a very creative and entrepreneurial city. I always have Amsterdam in mind when I am in my creative process. The people are very easy going and they all have their own personal take on style, which is very inspiring.
Mew
You live in Amsterdam, how has the city’s creative scene influenced your work?
The LOUISE girl is fun, bohemian and effortlessly cool. She has her own style and is not too trend focused. She loves to wear vintage and combine this with new classical inspired items. She wants to look good, but she does not want to spend too much time on it. What are you most looking forward to about Autumn/Winter? I’m really curious to hear everyone’s reactions. I have shown it digitally or on paper, but no one has seen the collection in real life. This is the reason why I want to design and it’s the most important thing to me.
It is a story that will be written from season to season. I am always thinking outside of the box. I want to create a lifestyle. I would not be surprised in the future to add a music album to the collection or to exhibit some photography of LOUISE. I will never stop evolving. Louise is available online and in our Mayfair store.

FLUFF & FUR In the winter months there is nothing better than cosying up with some furry items to keep you warm. Fluff and fur is one of the biggest trends of the season, be it thick, sheepskin shearling jackets or bold, furry accessories. Matthew Williamson sent fur down the catwalk in its hoards with fuzzy oversized jackets and we’ve already seen the shaggy Gucci slippers in every September issue going, so if there’s one trend to get on board with as the weather turns, it’s definitely this one. By Sun have some fluffy slippers of their own, complete with beaded fringing, we’re already dreaming of sliding our feet into a pair after a long day at the office. Bags by Lucque and BET Barcelona are colourful and fun with just the right amount of fluff and fur to give a nod to the trend and the pick and mix scarf by Florence Bridge will have you looking so on trend that warmth is simply an after thought. It’s eccentric and over the top, yet there’s something strangely appealing about potentially having to comb your accessories before leaving the house. MEET THE MAKER
The dark side of fairytales Louise Coleman £90
Introducing the Wolf & Badger x LOUISE COLEMAN collaboration, the limited edition tote bag that we are releasing for autumn. Emma Foreman speaks to Louise to find out how she began the process...
Louise Coleman £145 The final design for the limited edition tote bag.
Louise Coleman £120
Louise Coleman is living in her imagination, a world of fairy tales, folklore and magic, filled with wildlife and wonder. From early childhood, Louise would spend hours just sitting and drawing. Having grown up in the Norfolk countryside she was, and continues to be inspired by the woods and fields that surround her. This environment, entwined with her love of old books and stories sparked what is fast becoming the instantly recognisable Louise Coleman print that it is today.
18
Having studied textiles at school and university, Louise has honed in on her skills over the years and has developed a beautiful illustrative style. It began simply with flora and fauna, although Louise believes there was a dark edge to her designs from the very beginning. However, it was when she made the conscious decision to start including more macabre, horror inspired imagery that her magical aesthetic really formed, revealing her love of wildlife, but with a darkside. The impressive results of Louise Coleman’s debut collection in our Dover Street store gave Louise the confidence to develop her collection from simple scarves, into a plethora of ready-towear garments; including kimonos, camisoles and tunic dresses. Customers were captivated by the prints and the brand simply took off. Louise’s expertise lies within the prints themselves, and she is at her happiest when sitting and illustrating outside in natural sunlight. She uses pen with a combination of shading and dot work to create the intricate designs, and the whole process can take a couple of days for an impressive single piece. It seemed only natural for Wolf & Badger to team up with Louise to produce a limited edition tote bag for the season, a blend of the two brands into one seamless illustration was what we wanted to achieve. Louise started with the text then added the flora and fauna, the real challenge was maintaining an autumnal style when so much animal and floral print was involved, but with clear direction in her head, the result is a beautifully unique and eye catching design. Louise Coleman is currently working on developing illustrations and expanding her collection into ready-to-wear garments. The limited edition tote bags will be selectively distributed to key influencers and ambassadors of Wolf & Badger. Louise Coleman is available online and in our Mayfair store.

How do you begin the design process? We usually begin by bouncing ideas off one another. There is often one unique feature of the garment that serves as the basis from which the rest of the design revolves around. For our Ninja Sweat Hoodie we came up with the concept of the hidden kangaroo pocket first. The rest of the design was kept bare so as to not take away from the focus of the product feature.
Cut & Tso Autumn/Winter ‘15 Collection
Why menswear in particular? I’ve always been very picky about the clothes that I buy. There’s a certain frustration I feel when I go into a boutique and see the same pieces over and over again. What’s the most important skill required to do your job? Being able to distinguish our designs from the rest of the menswear brands out there, without being gimmicky. What would your alternative career be? A car designer.
Cut & Tso Autumn/Winter ‘15 Collection
INTERVIEW
CUT & TSO Phil Tso, the Creative Director of Cut & Tso began designing four years ago, drawing inspiration from Chinese and Japanese gang culture. His inspiration can be seen in the early stages of his work in the ‘ninja bomber’, which was the starting point from which the rest of the collection grew. With the completion of the Cut & Tso collection in Canada, Phil and the team have decided to focus their efforts on tackling the markets in New York and London. Describe Cut & Tso in 3 words? Simple, dark and innovative. What was the inspiration behind the Autumn/Winter ‘15 collection? We took certain features and silhouettes from traditional Asian warriors and incorporated them into traditional menswear pieces, like the bomber jacket and the peacoat. We wanted to add drama to our garments but at the same time also wanted a heightened level of functionality.
What’s your favourite hour of the day? Happy hour. What apps keep you sane? Instagram. What are you most looking forward to about Autumn/Winter? For the first time having our collection carried in retailers outside of Canada. How do you de-stress? Good conversation and alcohol. Who do you dream of seeing wearing your designs? A$AP ROCKY. What is your ultimate aim for Cut & Tso the brand? We want Cut & Tso to be available in the top menswear boutiques around the world and to expand into footwear and accessories.

MODERN tailoring Consider menswear for Autumn/Winter ‘15 as architecture for the body, with precision-engineered pieces that have been cleverly constructed to play with new lengths. We’ve been hearing about a move towards generously cut tailoring for a few seasons now, but this season the trend seems to have arrived in full force. We take a look at the menswear designers who are mixing things up and taking steps towards bold, new dimensions this season. London Athletics Club are bringing classic tailoring into the 21st century with their affordable streetwear. With bold, geometric shapes and a strong, directional colour palette, this is a brand for the modern creative, who use the street as their playground. Czech based fashion designer Jiri Kalfar is pushing boundaries with his Autumn/Winter ‘15 collection, the exaggerated, external stitching on the tweed jacket, and the generous cut of the tweed trousers give a nod to the seventies trend that returned to the catwalk once again this season. Style and functionality are two things that go hand in hand according to London based menswear brand, Bee Clothing, whose innovate take on menswear aims to protect you from the elements yet keep you looking stylish at the same time. Whether it’s with oyster card sleeve pockets, commuter cycle jackets or water repellent coated materials, this is one brand that you’ll love. You can thank us later.

If you’re throwing a dinner party this winter and are somewhat concerned about your domestic skills in the kitchen, we wholeheartedly recommend purchasing these delightful ceramics by Kim Sera. When the food is being served on plates that look as good as this, no one will bat an eyelid if the food is sub par.

There’s no denying that the arrival of autumn will throw horrendous weather and torrential downpours our way, but thanks to Raindance Umbrellas, we no longer want to hibernate. With bright, bold colours and geometric styles to choose from, we’ll soon be singing in the rain rather than hiding from it.

Tell us about Bohemia Design, how did it begin as a brand? Bohemia was created by Creative Director Jenny Lockton, who started out as a retailer and found it hard to find products she wanted to sell in her stores, so she began sourcing her own and became a manufacturer. The company has grown into an international lifestyle brand with stockists worldwide.

Mountain and Molehill Continuing the trend of wild interiors is the quirky homeware brand Mountain and Molehill. How important to you is using sustainable materials? The ethos of our brand is centred on fair trade and eco-friendly, ethical partnerships, so using sustainable materials has always been a priority to us. All of our leathers are dyed using natural plant based dyes; our baskets are woven with local Moroccan palm leaves and our block printed wash bags are made from cotton canvas.
You create colourful, unique fashion and homeware accessories, how do you begin the design process? Our design process is very organic; we work in collaboration with our artisans around the world to produce our accessories and homeware collections. Our small, close knit team in Edinburgh design the products, work on colours, create patterns and choose the materials.
You are based in Edinburgh, Scotland, does the city influence your work in any way? Edinburgh is a buzzing city full of creative, artistic people. It is also a beautiful place to live and the perfect backdrop to our brand; we love having a strong base in Scotland to work from.
What is your favourite part of the process? Receiving samples of new designs is the best and most exciting part of the process! It is also important to be able to look at the potential designs with a critical eye and test them for potential faults or changes.
Bohemia Design pieces are influenced by different areas of the world, do you get to travel a lot with your job? Travelling is part of my role and is a wonderful perk to the job. I love the buzz of new places and meeting new people, and above everything it helps me to understand the products we are creating and selling. To know that we are helping to keep these traditional crafts alive is a wonderful feeling.
How do you go about finding the artisans that you work with to produce your products? We travel to Morocco, India and Turkey to work with our artisans. We make regular trips to visit their workshops, meet the craftsmen and work on new ideas. We also use the time to source potential new suppliers and to research ideas. Being in a new environment is perfect for refreshing our heads, to take a moment to step back and think clearly about what we want to produce next and who would be best to work with. You work closely with leather artisans in Morocco, why do you feel this works well for Bohemia Design? Our talented Moroccan artisans are experts in working with leather. Their age-old techniques are still relevant today, and we love creating cool and contemporary products in collaboration with their traditional skills.
What is your favourite Bohemia Design product? My favourite Bohemia product is my block printed wash bag, I use it everyday and love it. It is overflowing with every beauty product I own; my one stop shop. What is the best part of your job? I love the varied nature of my job and that everything we produce is 100% handmade and ethical. Knowing that my job is helping to provide work to lots of skilled artisans around the world is important to me and continues to drive me in my job. Where do you hope to see Bohemia Design in 5 years’ time? Working with more artisans, producing more collections and continuing to grow our brand! Bohemia Design is available online.
