A bigger, better show n
Big Iron Farm Show grows
By Jonathan Knutson Agweek Staff Writer
Farm machinery is getting so big and sophisticated that the Big Iron Farm Show is looking at adjusting the doors of an exhibit building to get equipment in and out, the show’s director says. “Just the size and complexity of equipment today,” says Bryan Schulz. “It makes every year new and exciting for us.” The annual Big Iron Farm Show, which celebrates what’s new and innovative in agriculture, will be held Sept. 9 to 11 in West Fargo, N.D. More than 70,000 people will attend the show, which features everything from health screenings and marketing sessions to a ladies brunch and a program for international visitors. Schulz is particularly excited about the show’s unmanned aircraft system component, which includes daily demonstrations from 1 to 3 p.m., followed by an educational class each day.
Blue works
Interest in unmanned aircraft systems, also known as drones, is high, Schulz says. Big Iron hoped to hold UAS demonstrations in 2013, but couldn’t get regulatory approval in time. This year, the Academy of Model Aeronautics, which routinely oversees model aircraft competition, will coordinate the demonstrations in accordance with the organization’s safety procedures. The North Dakota State University Extension Service will be involved with the UAS demonstrations, as well. NDSU Extension also will have a display in the east entry of the Hartl Ag Building, at which several of its experts will give presentations. n Ken Hellevang, ag engineer, will talk about alternative grain storage facilities. He’ll also use a grain entrapment display to demonstrate safe grain-handling practices. n Dwight Aakre and Andy Swenson, agribusiness and applied economic specialists, and county agents Willie Huot and John Kringler will answer questions about the new farm bill.

Brunch, app Schulz also mentions the annual Ladies Brunch and Style Show, held this year on Wednesday morning at the
Holiday Inn of Fargo. The doors open at 9 a.m. Tickets, sold at the door, cost $20 per person. “It sells out every year, so you have to get there early,” he says. Schulz is enthused about the show’s new mobile app, a free download. It’s available on the Apple and Android market. More information about the app is on the show’s website: www.big ironfarmshow.com. “We’re very proud of it (the app),” he says. “We had a lot of people contact us about getting one. I think it has a lot of items that people coming to the show are looking for.” Crop prices have plunged in the past year, and profit is harder to come by in the ag sector. But that hasn’t diminished interest in this year’s Big Iron, Schulz says. “We’re not seeing that (reduced interest) at all. There’s a lot of excitement,” he says.
“STRONG”
E The Big Iron Farm Show in 2013 showcased the evolution of precision agriculture. This year, the farm show continues the theme with technological advancement, and features unmanned aerial systems with live demonstrations of the latest farm equipment.

Mycorrhizal Seed Inoculums Standard roots can only take in nutrients at the tip of the root and have no means for water storage. Mycorrhizae attaches itself to the root giving it hundreds of thousands of new access points for nutrients and water, as well as the ability to store a reserve of water. An increase in water and nutrient uptake will help increase your yields and your profits!

High-flying demos Drones on Big Iron agenda n
By Jonathan Knutson Agweek Staff Writer
Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) might be the hottest topic in produc-
tion agriculture right now, and the annual Big Iron Farm Show will offer both UAS demonstrations and classes. “There’s considerable interest in the
subject,” says John Nowatzki, North Dakota State University Extension Service agricultural machine systems specialist. He’s helping to plan the Big Iron UAS events.
Live demonstration Big Iron will be held Sept. 9 to 11 at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds in West Fargo, N.D. The preliminary agenda includes: n Field demos from 1 to 3 p.m. each day in the demonstration area south of the grandstands. At least four companies with UAS expertise will participate. The demonstrations will be educational, not commercial opportunities for the companies, Nowatzki says. There also will be a presentation on what’s being learned from the UAS program at the Carrington (N.D.) Research Extension Center. n A UAS “interpretation class” will be held at 3 p.m. each day in the South Schollander conference room. The class will examine how ag producers can incorporate UAS-supplied data into their operations. Interpreting UAS data is crucial, as is managing it, Nowatzki says. Farmers can focus too much on the type of air frame used by drones, and pay too little attention to the type of camera package the aircraft carries, says Paul Gunderson, director of the Dakota Precision Ag Center at Lake Region State College in Devils Lake, N.D. Gunderson also will be involved in the UAS demonstrations and classes at Big Iron.
Model aircraft role The Muncie, Ind.-based Academy of Model Aeronautics is in charge of the Big Iron UAS demonstrations and has Federal Aviation Administration permission to coordinate them. The AMA has a number of contest directors, who oversee model aircraft shows and make sure they run safely. One of the contest directors will run the Big Iron UAS demonstration. Rich Hanson, the AMA’s director of public relations and government affairs, says this will be the third such public UAS demonstration he has coordinated. The other two were in Iowa and St. Louis.

UAS
Continued from Page 8
AMA involvement Traditionally, the AMA has supported and promoted model aircraft. But drones are a natural adjunct to that, Hanson says. The AMA’s involvement with precision agriculture began after a top FAA official said farmers could operate drones over their own commercial farms using hobby rules, Hanson says. Nowatzki says he learned of the AMA’s involvement with the UAS at a demonstration in Iowa. “As soon as I heard about it, I knew the folks at Big Iron would be interested,” he says. The FAA has backed away, at least for now, from the position that farmers can operate drones over their own farms using hobby rules. The AMA doesn’t plan to coordinate any other public UAS demonstrations after Big Iron, Hanson says. Still, “We have a willingness to do this,” he says. “We’ll continue to help the (precision ag) community as much as we can, to the extent that the FAA doesn’t tell us to stop now.”
FAA guidelines Congress has ordered the FAA to come up with guidelines on how to incorporate drones safely into the nation’s air space. Some of those guidelines could be released later this year, according to published reports. Gunderson says it’s important that the federal government doesn’t take too long in issuing the guidelines. Long delays could cause farmers to grow frustrated, diminishing their interest in UAS. Drones hold great potential for farmers and ranchers, and producers generally recognize that, Gunderson says. “Come to Big Iron. It’s a great outlet for producers who want to learn more about these technologies,” he says.

FARGO, N.D. — Side-dressing nitrogen fertilizer played a bigger role in the 2014 crop and is likely to increase in the coming years, according to experts. Darrell Steiner is a sales manager for Hagie Manufacturing Co. Inc. of Clarion, Iowa, one of the companies making products to help with that function. The company again will be at the Big Iron Farm Show this year. Hagie has been around since 1947 when farmer Ray Steiner Hagie started a seed company and needed a detasseler with high clearance to save labor during World War II. The third-generation owner is Alan Hagie, who also still farms. The company’s Single Tank Sprayers can be fitted with a nitrogen tool bar (NTB). They’re able to apply late nitrogen in standing corn as tall as 10 to 11 feet. “It just rolls the corn under the machine as they’re putting nitrogen on, but typically they’ll do it before tasseling,” Steiner says.

Hagie added a spray tank for lateseason corn, making what was said to be the first self-propelled sprayer on the market. The company makes machines for commercial applicators, but also for individual farmers, especially as it has grown larger. “We sell several hundred a year,” Steiner says. “A farmer or a dealer, a retailer, can take a spray boom off and put the nitrogen tool bar on and go side-dress 28 or 32 percent nitrogen.” Hagie dominates the “very highclearance” market of 70 inches or more, although John Deere, RoGator and others have machines with clearance in the 50-inch-plus range. The company sells directly to farmers and has a salesman in Sioux Falls, S.D., who covers North Dakota and South Dakota. Cost of the tool bar varies by size, measured in feet per row. The 12row high-clearance machine runs in
the mid $30,000 range; 16-row in the $40,000 range. A 24-row in high-clearance is more than $100,000. Hagie has several dozen of the machines in South Dakota and North Dakota, Steiner says. In some parts of the country, including Illinois and Iowa, the corn gets so tall so quickly, equipment has to get down through the corn at a rapid pace to deliver nitrogen. “The Hagie will do that,” he says. “We are coming out with a 24-row low-clearance toolbar — about half the height of the current one — (and it) will probably run about $50,000 to $60,000, and that’s a 60-footer too, so that’s going to be quite exciting,” Steiner says. “In this side-dress application business, most of it is a pull-behind. Most of the guys want to go when corn is shorter, and you want to move fast, and you want to get a lot done. That bar will perfectly fit that market.” Also on the nitrogen toolbar, Hagie offers the OPTRX sensor, which visually determines the color of the chlorophyll in the corn plant. “If it’s dark green and rich, it probably doesn’t need nitrogen, but if it’s light colored, it would ask for nitrogen,” Steiner says. “By sensing it, reading it, it can vary the amount of nitrogen as it goes through the field.” The Single Tank Sprayer ranges from the STS-10 — 1,000 gallons — to the STS-16, with a 1,600-gallon tank. For farmers who don’t want a $300,000 machine, Hagie also builds a Dual Tank Sprayer unit, which is 1,000 gallons. That runs $180,000 to $190,000. “That’s a very light machine, a very well-balanced machine, but it gets a farmer into the market for doing all of his post-spraying and even pre-spraying,” Steiner says.
Environment, yield
Farmers are choosing side-dressing for many reasons. “There’s a lot of discussion about nitrogen leaching into groundwater, getting to the Gulf of Mexico,” Steiner says. “Here in Minnesota, there’s discussion about not allowing anhydrous (ammonia nitrogen) applications in the fall because of that. If that should happen, that’s going to dramatically change when a farmer gets his nitrogen on. “You can’t put on all of your sidedressing in the spring, there’s just no way,” he says. “Side-dressing is going to become more and more prevalent later if that does happen.”

Fast Mfg. expands Executives ready for Big Iron n
By Mikkel Pates
Agweek Staff Writer
FARGO, N.D. — When it comes to spraying, at least one company wants
you to think Fast. Cody Fast is chief financial officer of Fast Manufacturing Inc. in Mountain Lake, Minn. The company will dis-
play its wares at Big Iron Sept. 9 to 11 at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds in West Fargo, N.D. And it’s a classic Big Iron farm family story. Fast Manufacturing was started in 1990 by farmers Verlyn and Nancy Fast, who still own the company. Cody and his brother, Brandon, are also in the business. The company says 75 percent of its 100 employees have been or are directly involved in farming operations. As the company fable goes, in 1988, Verlyn built a flat-fold sprayer for his own use. “Some of the neighbors saw it, and the next year I think he made two or three more to sell and it’s been developed into what it is today,” Cody says.
Products The company’s two main products are pull-type sprayers and liquid fertilizer applicators. Sprayers start with 500-gallon tanks with a 45-foot boom and the largest is a 2,400-gallon tank and a 132-foot boom. “We try to make sure our main dimensions involved with our product are going to make the most sense and keep the most money in farmers’ pockets,” Cody says. FAST
Continued from Page 20 Fast promotes a design that minimizes crop damage. “We take a lot of pride in our boom ride, so farmers don’t have to worry about where their boom is dipping down in the crop as they go through the field,” Cody says. In the past five years, the company has seen the most growth with its sidedressing liquid applicators. “You inject the 28 percent nitrogen products right into the soil,” Cody says. “The practice has grown because you have split application of nitrogen. You can put some on before you plant, and then give a shot of nitrogen to your corn, and you also use it in wheat right before the high-growth stage.” Fast says studies show side-dressing is most effective at the three- and eight-leaf corn stage, right before the high-growth stage. The company also makes liquid fertilizer applicators, which is the tool for side-dressing. Tank sizes range from 1,050 gallons to 2,400-gallons, with tool bars 30 to 90 feet long. The longest tool bar was introduced in 2011 and is one of the few on the market that wide.
Manufacturing move In early July, the company opened a new, 144,000-square-foot manufacturing facility north of Windom, Minn., on U.S. Highway 71. It moved in an automated, powder-coat paint process and assembly functions first. A second phase is scheduled for mid-September, including raw material through welding and fabrication. “We’ll have 65 to 70 employees in that location,” Cody says. The company has ramped up employees in the past two years, going from roughly 60 to 100. Over-thecounter parts will still be based in Mountain Lake, as well as engineering, prototyping and most administrative staff. Fast sells through the Upper Midwest — North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. It has a sales and over-the-counter parts location in Gilman, Ill., which services Fast dealers east of the Mississippi River.
“We take a lot of pride in our boom ride, so farmers don’t have to worry about where their boom is dipping down in the crop as they go through the field.” Cody Fast CFO, Fast Manufacturing Inc.
