MOTION GRAPHICS In the course of my studies I started to create animated videos on the projects. Self-taught and passionate, I developed a more professional approach to creating animations and explanation videos. The videos and other projects in this field can be found at: http://wj-fischer.de/motion-graphics/

ONE NIGHT OF TERROR P10

VEINS OF VIENNA

Veins of Vienna This visual mobility report examines the bicycle situation in Vienna. In a personal field research as a bicycle courier in a period of one year, the bicycle lane network was examined more closely and peculiarities and dangers were uncovered. The video serves as evidence against the city's claim of having one of the safest bicycle networks in Europe.

Hydropower Technologies

Vienna Terror

Various clips were created for a stateowned company to explain how different hydropower technologies work. The videos were part of an exhibition, used for lectures and for the company's website.

On the eve of the second curfew taking effect due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a jihadist-motivated terrorist attack occurred in the center of Vienna. This video is intended to visualize the events surrounding the attack in Vienna, as well as the subsequent insecurities among the Viennese population.

Fish Sluice Höllenstein

The basis for the master thesis: Assembly was formed by 3 aspects of the current political and architectural situation. The video is considered as a teaser and initial reflection for my master project. The main video shows the most important conceptual considerations for the project. The video was created in the course of an exhibition of my thesis at the "Architekturzentrum Wien".

For an ecological use of hydropower it is necessary not to disturb the natural movement of fish upstream. For older structures, this continuity must be created subsequently. A sustainable sluice was developed to compensate for any energy losses. The video explains how the technology, which was later patented, works

Dar Dasht - A Process

2000 degrees

For the study project “Dar Dasht” in Esfahan, Iran, a strategy was developed to revitalize a derelict district in a sustainable way. The heart of this plan is a community center that controls and organizes the reanimation of the bazaar and the district of dar dasht.

Animation for the study project "Sports Center" at the Technical University Vienna. The project aims to formally embody the common character of sports. The different sports are arranged on a common spiral plane that rotates a total of 2000°.

One Night of Terror - Vienna Attacks

Eventmap By collecting data through social media posts, press coverage, and official police protocols, the movement profile of the assassin in the night of November 2, 2020 was created. The three-dimensional time-distance diagram provides the event map of the night of the vienna attacks.

Impact

Motion Graphics

In the ambiguity of the first hours of the Vienna Attacks, the reports overflowed. A general uncertainty about the situation followed. The reactions of the city's population were studied and graphically displayed.

9

Investigation The investigation of the terrorist attack has not yet been completed. The subject of the ongoing criminal investigation is still the network of the attacker.

Heatmap The most frequent routes were identified using a function that determined the frequency of use via measurement points. The recorded GPS routes via Strava were first exported via a GIS program and then analyzed using Rhinoceros and Grasshopper. After points were distributed in equal distance on the respective curves, the function in Grasshopper determines the frequency of the points via a proximity function. Visually displayed using coloured three-dimensional vertical bar charts.

Simulation Everyday situations were modeled and simulated three-dimensionally on the basis of photos. The aim was to vividly visualize particular dangers for cyclists in road traffic and to point out the problems and causes.

VEINS OF VIENNA - MOBILITY REPORT

Photogrammetry

Motion Graphics

In the process of a closer analysis of particular problematic areas for bicycle traffic, one location was precisely captured as a point cloud. The situation was visualized with simple mobile Photographs and the help of photogrammetry technology.

Master Thesis TU Vienna | Dep for Spatial and Sustainable Design Prof. Christian Kühn

Crisis Politics, and particularly Democracy, is changing. At present, these changes are most noticeable in western countries, due to growing mistrust towards politicians, the increasing popularity of populist parties, a general disenchantment with politics or the phenomenon of so-called „Wutbürger".

Critisism The Parliament as a building type contributes worldwide to national self-representation and self-perception through its symbolic effect. It is almost a matter of course that parliament buildings present themselves with a very strong monumentality, to be expressed by size, staging and architectural style. The dismissive character of a monument, and especially a monument of national identity, might be part of the problem. For instead of transparency or closeness to the people, it is rather motifs such as pathos and reverence that can be attributed to these monuments. There are attempts to give parliaments an architectural interpretation of their basic democratic ideas. The question is, however, whether it is sufficient, for example, to grant a limited number of visitors access to a glass dome?

The Middle East is testing ground for this thought experiment. There is hardly any other place in the world where politics manifests itself more in buildings than in Israel, Gaza or the West Bank. However, an area shaped by instability, destruction and conflict-ridden buildings can also be an ideal environment for imagination and vision. The current situation in the region is clouding optimism about the future. The likelihood of a lasting status quo is very high given the conditions set by both sides. Understandably, there is a lack of idealism in the debate about the future of Israel and Palestine. Yet belief in the ideal only becomes possible by fading out realism. Rather, it is about a visionary idea, a utopia that probably will never come true. This work is based on a game of thought and the demand for more idealism. It is about understanding the conflict in the Middle East as a chance for conceiving new forms of democracy and its structural formulations for a state after apartheid, whatever the name of this state may be. It should be a search for other types of society. Models that are different from anything we have seen before.

The concept of the Assembly is divided into three conceptual spheres. The levels of information, reality and imaginary stand for three Tempora: Past, Present and Future which are spatially translated into the following three elements

ARCHIVE The foundation for a peaceful solution lies in a joint analysis of history. The archive as an active instance for consensus building with regard to the prevailing narratives forms the level of the past and the information. The underground building complex is accessible to the public via a cut in the terrain and contains a hybrid of archive and educational facility.

SQUARE The second level and level of the present, in other words the "reality" or the "now", is the public square. In addition to a place for social exchange, it provides space for trade, culture and public discourse. The square forms the mediating level between archive and Assembly. It is both access level and buffer zone for both institutions. The structure of the Assembly floating above the square can be reached via an elevation. In the topography of the square, the artificial hill forms an antipole to the incision in the terrain. A sharp edge is created by cutting off the modifications of the terrain. The disturbance of the otherwise homogeneous topography is to be understood as a reference to border lines.

ASSEMBLY The Assembly building above the square represents the future and the imaginary. A place where decisions are made and where future is shaped. The concrete form of the structure and the space it creates, as well as its existence on the site, is not sealed. The concept aims to enable and provoke a process of migration and transformation in the building.

Location Jerusalem is considered to be one of the key issues in the Israel-Palestine conflict. Both peoples claim the holy city as the political center of their state. This fact and the history of Jerusalem make this place the ideal starting point for this thought experiment. The “Damascus Triangle” north of the old town was part of a broad buffer zone between Jordan and Israel after the First War of Independence. As a neutral ground, it is still considered the border between East and West Jerusalem. A place that, given its neutrality, cannot be historically claimed for either side. The topography found allows a generous view of the historic old city of Jerusalem and is equally visible in the city structure.

The functional areas archive, workshops and administration are situated around three courtyards. In addition to illuminating the work and access areas, the courtyards provide a visual link between public and visitors space and the archive space. Classic functions such as collection, cataloging, restoration, digitization and archiving are supplemented by the educational mandate. Visitors should be given the opportunity to participate in the process. The center of the complex is an Exhibition Space. Access, exhibition, event areas and the actual archive are arranged around the main courtyard in three layers.

Visitors to the archive are led down inclined levels. The visitor's space ends in an auditorium below the courtyard. The main circulation encircles the inner courtyard, which is set apart from the facade. The lavishly landscaped and topographically designed courtyard itself is part of the exhibition and can be understood as a further reference to the Israel-Palestine conflict. It represents one of the central issues of conflict between the two people: ‘a piece of land’. It is an element of utopia which can never be reached within the complex of the archive.

FIKTION

The public space serves not only as buffer space between archive and Assembly, but also as a mediator for both functions. By manipulating the topography, the entrances for archive and Assembly are created. A fold in the plaza ensures access to the archive, while an elevation offers the possibility to enter the floating structure of the Assembly. The rigid grid of the structure dominates the square. A disturbance is created by a line in the perpendicular pattern. This disturbance stands as symbol for border and can be perceived as historical reference. The harmony of the landscape (topography) is disturbed by a human intervention and shows the brutality and absurdity of borders in the special context of the Middle East. The artificial axis becomes apparent in the inner courtyard of the archive. The structure of the Assembly, in which the fictional border no longer matters, overcomes this rift.

1. Agenda Council (proposals on topics) The legislative process begins in the Agenda Council. It is the place where the agenda is set. Problems are identified or introduced via petitions. In addition to examining and researching individual topics, decisions are made together on where action is needed and what needs to be negotiated in the further process. "The Common" or "the Collective" 1. Agenda Council should be spatially symbolized. The visibility within this body strengthens the collective nature of the Agenda Council. Visual relationships are enabled by a ring or atrium configuration.

PLANNING. A PROCESS

Architecture

LONG-TERM DEVELOPMENT FOR DAR DASHT ISFAHAN | IRAN

2nd Year Master TU Vienna | Dep for Spatial and Sustainable Design

DAR DASHT THE MASTERPLAN - REVITALIZATION Dar Dasht is the old quarter north of the bazaar area and west of the Friday Mosque in Esfahan/ Iran. It has been brutally cut in half by the Abdorrazzaq Avenue in the 1960s. This fact has caused a depopulation and the abandonment of the traditional courtyard houses. The key for a successful revitalization of Dar Dasht is the recreation of the Bazaar in this quarter. To achieve this it is mandatory to recreate the former veins step by step. After the reconstruction of the workshops connected to the main Bazaar around Jameh mosque the smaller part of the bazaar next to the Dar Dasht minarets can be reconnected. The introduction of streetmarkets should provide the necessary final steps to successfully reanimate the main bazaar of Dar Dasht. If there is ongoing market activity, more people would have a reason to stay in Dar Dasht. According to estimations 75% of the citizens of Dar Dasht are working outside of their community in one of the factories in the periphery or elsewhere. Bazaar shop owners leave their units empty and unused, because it’s not worth it.

BUILDING CONCEPT - REASONABLE DECISIONS What exactly can be achieved by architects or urban planners to initiate change in that kind of area? The concept is to continue operating the Masterplan in a smaller scale. By participation and testings on abandonend sites we can find out what is really needed by the community and what would have the potential to be implemented. We don’t know if one specific program will catch on with the neighborhood. In several testing phases we will find out what kind of institution is missing. People with ideas and ambition could start their own ideas and once a program takes root it will be part of the community centre. The task is to determine a system which allows several types of interpretation. More than a building it is the idea to start a process. The construction is defined from the beginning, the elements can be prefabricated, ordered and stored. An old Sarai next to the Dar Dasht Minarets is best suited for a future community centre as it was a place with cultural and economical relevance before.

LOCATION

The most noticeable feature of the site is the traffic which occurs in almost every possible way of transport in cities. Metro, Tramway, Motorway, Heavy Car Traffic is the natural circumstance of Vienna’s second largest roundabout. The Idea of this Concept is, creating a volume which is able to allow several flows of traffic and movement but also redirect some of these flows. In a network of university, football stadium and residential complex surrounded by a four-lane road, a sports center must manage the balancing act between sound and visual isolation and an opening gesture.

SPORTS EVENTS & TRAINING

An architectural response to the special urban conditions and the program that has the most diverse requirements is found in the search for commonalities. In this context, dynamics and movement are two very distinctive features that are answered with a round structure. Urban flow, orientation and kinetics significantly influence the design. The goal was to create a continuum of space for each sport. A structure that can accommodate the most diverse Sports events.

Visual links, which are resulting of the geometry, in the inside, should provide an alternative experiences while doing sports. It aims at the feeling to experience sports on a collective level though intimicy and anonymity should still be possible. Different functions has to work on one common surface. To ensure this a requirement profile was created, so that each function later found its right place on the Helix.

Concept NEW MODERN LIBRARY | CPH How can a “visit” to the library look like in future. As we live in times of rapid and continuous change it is hard to predict what kinds of building are needed for information exchange in future. Is there really a need for built environments. This concept tries to figure out the main goals of libraries in the next age. A new expression comes into play: Edutainment. The New Modern Library of Copenhagen should be considered as adaptive space where unusual synergies and cooperation can take place.

PROGRAM To evaluate the program of a library in the 21st century, it is important to consider current discussions about media consumption. It is quite clear that attractiveness and entertainment must play a much greater role in "Library 3.0" than they have in the past. This project provides four general ideas for defining space. Performative space, meeting space, learning space, and inspirational space. This leads to the rest of the program, which always refers to these macro categories. With these definitions, we are able to determine future activities in the library. With different users, hours of use and different media, there is a wide variety of actions that will take place. To interpret these, we started to classify them into four general terms: Immerse, Discover, Experience, and Collaborate.

CIRCULATION SYSTEM The system of program evaluation is applied to the project. In contrast to the expected vertical arrangement of the 4 space definitions, we decided to arrange the program horizontally. This allows the user to experience the library in a variety of ways. The main circulation desk is located in the southern part of the building. Due to the high user frequency and to guarantee short distances to all areas of the new modern library, multible stairs are installed. WATERTAXI

BACHELOR THESIS: NEW URBAN DISTRICT IDENTITY CENTER ERFURT In 2017, a new important hub for train traffic opened in Erfurt. This was the reason for the city planning office to reactivate the site of the former railroad post office near the main station. The task was to find a concept for use, size and construction. Due to the representative location and the growing importance of the area as of 2017, an ensemble of existing and new buildings was created, the Identity Center Erfurt. Several identity-creating sectors of Erfurt (such as art, media or solar industry) were to constitute the mixed use of the area.

Overview

Houses on the Hill The special feature and challenge of this project, a singlefamily home on the outskirts of Vienna was the plot. With a length of over 100 meters, a width of 13 meters and a steeply sloping terrain with a height difference of 24 meters, the building site offers a spectacular view of Vienna. In order to reconcile the constraints of the site, the legal requirements and the wishes of the builders, the spatial programme was distributed over three buildings. Now three small houses dance down the slope, with small, protected green spaces unfolding between them.

Transparency While the three houses including the garage appear at first glance to be a group and yet independent, they are connected by the basement. The structure with a glazed underground atrium, light corridors and open rooms with high ceilings provides views in, through and out of many places.

The multi-storey garage is located on the border of the Sonnwendviertel district in Vienna, whose two sides could not be more different. The north-east façade faces the most important Austrian railway connection in an eastwest direction. This side is used daily by thousands of train passengers. The other side of the façade faces neighbouring houses and their green inner courtyards.

101

The all-round façade of perforated trapezoidal sheeting takes up these contrasts and weaves them into an ornamental mesh that gives the massive structure of the elevated garage an airy impression. The simple structure appears like an artistic textile due to the geometric arrangement of the white and gold elements and the three-dimensional folds. Depending on the distance and the lighting, the effect of the façade changes while passing by with the train.

Project Most recently, I worked in a team of 8 architects and 1 engineer on the Evangelical Campus Nuremberg project. I was involved in the preliminary design, draftand approval planning and was responsible for the communication and coordination with the building services engineers as well as the design of individual areas such as student learning zones, rooftop lounge or the glass wall partition system which is one of the major feature of the project.

Implementation Planning To emphasise the floating character of the extension, the aim was to span diagonally arranged larch boards over all 6 sides of the cube. In addition to the design and approval planning, I was also involved in the implementation planning. After the detailed planning of the wooden façade, we installed the façade boards ourselves.

The meandering structure divides the outdoor space while drawing it into the building as inner courtyards. The concept of the façade in Hollabrunn was to mark shared spaces through coloured areas. I was involved in this project from the preliminary design phase to the implementation planning.

Highlights were the projects - Haus der Musik- in Innsbruck and the Guggenheim Museum in Helsinki, which I worked on alone alongside a visualiser. The biggest success, however, was winning the competition for the new design of the new U5 subway line in Vienna. In a small team of 5 people we were able to win the 2-stage competition.
