2021 Wolf Trap Annual Report

A NOTE FROM LEADERSHIP After a year and a half without live performances on our stages, we couldn’t have been more proud or excited to welcome audiences back to Wolf Trap for our 50th Anniversary performance season. While the opportunity to highlight five decades of artistic excellence would have been cause for celebration on its own right, this year took on an even greater sense of occasion. Working closely with our valued partners and friends at the National Park Service, we delighted in seeing patrons come through the gates of the Filene Center for the first time since 2019. It was a remarkable time to be back together again. Our stages radiated with excitement as artists and live audiences safely reunited, and our education programs deftly connected with young children, teachers, and caregivers in virtual, in-person, and hybrid settings. At the same time, Wolf Trap Opera’s renowned summer residency program triumphantly returned to live public performances, while providing professional career training and artistic support for the next generation of operatic stars. When Catherine Filene Shouse founded Wolf Trap, her vision and her philanthropy united and fostered community through the power of the performing arts. With each passing year, we continue to honor her legacy while creating diverse and inspiring arts and education offerings for all. We are grateful to our many patrons, donors, educators, and community supporters, whose deep commitment and generous contributions help us deliver on our mission. All of our successes—past, present, and future — are thanks to you.

2021 was a year to celebrate. After 18 months of dark stages, this special year marked the safe return of live performances, experiences at both Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts and The Barns at Wolf Trap, and a celebration of 50 years together. Five decades after Catherine Filene Shouse’s vision for Wolf Trap came to life, her dream was honored at the Filene

CYNTHIA ERIVO DURING THE FIFTY YEARS TOGETHER CONCERT

HONORING FIFTY YEARS TOGETHER On July 1, 1971, founder Mrs. Catherine Filene Shouse welcomed thousands of excited patrons to the Filene Center for the first time. Fifty years to the day, Wolf Trap paid homage to Mrs. Shouse’s legacy, her dedication to public service, and Wolf Trap’s impact on the community with Fifty Years Together: A Celebration of Wolf Trap. The magical night featured performances by powerhouse female artists including Grammy Award winner Cynthia Erivo, internationally acclaimed soprano Christine Goerke, and renowned pianist Joyce Yang, with JoAnn Falletta conducting the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO). CBS Sunday Morning with Jane Pauley profiled Wolf Trap in a national piece in July, featuring the Fifty Years Together concert, the return of audiences to the Park, and Mrs. Shouse’s accomplishments.

GRATITUDE AND EXTRAORDINARY PHILANTHROPY As the community began to emerge from the pandemic, Wolf Trap and PNC hosted a series of four free concerts for educators, healthcare professionals, and other frontline workers. The first featured the National Orchestral Institute Philharmonic with the Wolf Trap debut of prestigious conductor Marin Alsop, followed by three distinct and exciting performances by longtime partner “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. Returning audiences were thrilled to see that all previously tented decks at Wolf Trap National Park were transformed into permanently covered Pavilions. Constructed of Douglas Fir, the Associates, Terrace, Ovations, and Encore Circle Lounge Pavilions now blend seamlessly with the Park’s natural surroundings while complementing the striking architecture of the Filene Center. Returning performers also happily found newly transformed and refreshed backstage artist areas, including flexible dressing rooms, improved dining and lounge spaces, and more contemporary and functional kitchen and laundry facilities. Visitors and artists alike were greeted with a summer that sounded better than ever thanks to a new in-house sound system. These spectacular upgrades to the Pavilions, artist areas, and sound system were made possible by several visionary donors to the Foundation, who dedicated more than $35 million for long-term enhancements at the Park. In addition, many of these donors made lasting investments in Wolf Trap’s endowment with more than $3 million in pledges. Wolf Trap is grateful to these top donors for investing in our community treasure and these spaces.

OPERA SOARS FOR THE FIFTIETH SEASON Wolf Trap Opera (WTO), an integral part of Wolf Trap’s history, celebrated the 50th Anniversary Season with the return of opera performances at the Filene Center. After a year of practicing, performing, and sharing in distanced and virtual ways, many of WTO’s 2020 artists returned for the 2021 season to share their talents with live audiences. The exciting and emotional return to the stage was marked by a concert performance of Bologne’s The Anonymous Lover (L’Amant Anonyme) in collaboration with the National Symphony Orchestra, highlighting the work of the remarkable 17th-century Black composer. The season continued with two concert performances of Sondheim’s beloved musical setting of an infamous 19th-century tale Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, followed by a pairing of Viardot’s Cinderella (Cendrillon) with Holst’s Sāvitri, based on a Sanskrit tale about love overcoming death. In July, STARias: Opera’s Most Powerful Moments featured several of Wolf Trap Opera’s world renowned alumni. Tamara Wilson, Michelle DeYoung, Paul Groves, Robert Watson, Ryan Speedo Green, and Raymond Aceto joined 2021 Filene artists Gretchen Krupp, Ann Toomey, Alexandra Nowakowski, and Jonathan Bryan; the National Symphony Orchestra; and conductor Christopher Allen for an evening of dramatic highlights from Tosca, Faust, Rigoletto, and more.

Wolf Trap Opera welcomed internationally acclaimed bass Morris Robinson as

WOLF TRAP OPERA 2021 COMPANY

the 2021 Filene Artist in Residence. An alumnus of the program, Robinson worked with Wolf Trap Opera’s artists on career and artistic preparation, and conducted a Master Class for the artists in June that also streamed online. In addition to the return of in-person operas and concerts, Wolf Trap Opera offered the much-loved Aria Jukebox, an intimate Salon Series, and entertaining Little Lunch Music via digital livestreams. Following a successful and safe summer 2021 program, Wolf Trap Opera deepened its commitment to increasing accessibility by adding a stop on its national audition tour and hearing a number of auditions virtually. On this first tour since 2019, the team heard auditions in New York, L.A., Houston, Cincinnati, Chicago, Atlanta, and Vienna, VA.

Tonynominated Norm Lewis presented an evening of Broadway classics and opera superstar Renée Fleming performed selections by Ravel, Puccini, and more. A quintessential Wolf Trap experience, the NSO also returned with fan-favorite movies The Princess Bride in Concert and Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert.

A SUMMER FINALE TO REMEMBER Wolf Trap’s 50th Anniversary Gala on Saturday, September 25 highlighted the connections to music, nature, and community that have defined the Foundation for the last five decades. Raising more than $2 million, the Gala was the most successful fundraiser in Wolf Trap’s history. The 500 attendees included top philanthropic and business leaders, and an array of government officials. Guests enjoyed a sumptuous al fresco dinner in the lavishly appointed Pavilions, followed by a moving Filene Center program reflecting on Wolf Trap’s past. Leadership and Campaign Co-Chair Hillary Baltimore announced the launch of The Campaign for Wolf Trap: Our Next Chapter — the Foundation’s most ambitious fundraising initiative in support of improving and refining the Wolf Trap experience and strengthening the organization’s endowment for the benefit of generations to come. The speaking program culminated with inspiring remarks from Virginia Governor Ralph Northam and Dan D’Aniello, Wolf Trap Foundation Board of Directors Chairman. A private concert by The Avett Brothers had the VIP audience on its feet, and the evening concluded with dessert in a luxurious lounge atmosphere and dancing under the stars.

After challenging times and an 18-month intermission, there was no better way to reunite with each other than with live music. Following the kickoff of the 50th Anniversary, the summer and events for everyone.

SAFELY COMING BACK TO THE PARK As winter melted into spring, visitors participated in their first musical adventure back at Wolf Trap National Park with Ellen Reid SOUNDWALK. The delightful GPS-enabled public art work enhanced visitor interactions with the natural environment by bringing music, nature, and technology together in an immersive experience. Featuring a new score co-commissioned by Wolf Trap Foundation, visitors downloaded the free app and embarked on a mile-long route of trails through the Meadow, woods, and across Wolf Trap Run creek all accompanied by the SOUNDWALK music. The Filene Center reopened in June to socially distant and limited capacity audiences. The Foundation and the National Park Service worked closely with local, state, and federal government and health officials to ensure the reopening followed health and safety guidelines. For the first half of summer, audiences enjoyed the folk pair Watchhouse (formerly Mandolin Orange), local go-go band Big Tony and Trouble Funk, singer/songwriter Amos Lee, exhilarating duo The War and Treaty, and many more from the comfort of their assigned lawn or in-house pods.

Several performers made their Wolf Trap debuts including indie rockers Damien Jurado with Okkervil River (solo), internationally acclaimed Persian musician Kayhan Kalhor, and Harlem 100 Featuring Mwenso & The Shakes, while legendary hitmaker Jim Messina and soulful artist Joan Osborne both made their Barns debuts. Chamber Music at The Barns continued in 2021 in partnership with Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS). After presenting four spring virtual concerts from CMS’ Front Row: National series, Wolf Trap welcomed the incredible talent back to the stage for shows including Wu Han and Friends, Christmas with Cantus, and Spanish Inspirations with Wolf Trap Opera alumnus Will Liverman. Wolf Trap also partnered with local organizations including Opera Lafayette, who performed The Blacksmith, and UrbanArias, who presented the world premiere of UNKNOWN. The UNKNOWN production was co-commissioned by Wolf Trap in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Holiday Sing-A-Long From Home returned in time to celebrate the season with a two-part virtual show filmed at The Barns, featuring holiday carols from “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band and special performances by Pat McGee Band, David Finckel and Wu Han, Laura Benanti, Rodney Crowell, and John Lloyd Young. Audiences at The Barns were greeted with a refreshed bar area, elevated amenities, and new technologies that enhanced the patron experience including contactless check-in and ordering. Behind the scenes, The Barns kitchen expanded to increase food prep space, and backstage areas were improved with a stage crossover, accessible elevator, and refreshed pre-show spaces.

In 2021, students and teachers continued to grapple with the challenges presented by the pandemic and virtual learning, and social emotional learning became more important than ever. Wolf Trap’s Education team challenged itself to find ways to best serve educators by developing content that spoke to their needs, and could be delivered in an equitable, accessible, and respectful

EDUCATION & LEARNING

manner for diverse audiences and participants.

COMMITMENT TO LEARNING IN HYBRID ENVIRONMENTS

SINGAPORE WOLF TRAP’S DIGITAL SERIES, WAKE UP! SHAKE UP! STREAMED TO MORE THAN 4,500 PRESCHOOL STUDENTS THROUGHOUT SINGAPORE

During the 2020-2021 academic year, Wolf Trap Education continued to evolve to support virtual learning, completing nearly 1,900 residencies in partnership with over 1,500 virtual and in-person classrooms for nearly 100,000 people through its local, national, and international programs. Schools began the academic year virtually, with some expanding to a hybrid format in the spring. Throughout, Wolf Trap worked closely with Teaching Artists to adapt classroom residencies, professional development workshops, and family workshops to fit the technical requirements of schools. Wolf Trap Teaching Artists also collaborated with peers, staff, and teaching partners to modify learning techniques for screens to inspire interaction and build opportunities for meaningful connection. For example, Sherry Norfolk, a Teaching Artist with Greater St. Louis Wolf Trap, partnered with Virginia’s Chesterfield County teachers to deliver professional development services to classrooms for children with special needs. Together, Norfolk and her teaching partners used a variety of audio, visual, and interactive tools to encourage students to actively participate in virtual learning, achieving a significant increase in student engagement. Wolf Trap’s affiliate network was also hard at work adapting arts strategies for virtual classrooms outside of Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Singapore Wolf Trap introduced virtual camps and brought its 16-session residencies online. It also launched Wake Up! Shake Up!, a fun-filled week of digital broadcasts that kick-started students’ days with drama, song, and dance, and was broadcast to approximately 200 preschool professionals and 4,500 students. Capacity building for Wolf Trap’s affiliates was a key focus for this year. With increased demand for virtual services, Teaching Artists throughout the Wolf Trap Affiliate network were brought online to partner with teachers in the local area. Wolf Trap Education staff and Master Teaching Artists also provided in-person and virtual new artist trainings for affiliates. One such training was conducted with Hawai‘i Wolf Trap, Wolf Trap’s newest affiliate, which launched in February 2021, in partnership with Honolulu-based Hawai‘i Arts Alliance.

15

WOLF TRAP’S POPULAR FIELD TRIP FRIDAYS FEATURED THE MULTI-DISCIPLINARY WORK OF SEVEN WOLF TRAP TEACHING ARTISTS

Continuing the digital direction, Wolf Trap’s Grants Program for High School Performing Arts Teachers awarded grants to eight teachers from high schools in seven local school districts who were able to showcase their projects and students on Wolf Trap’s Virtual Stage. The selected projects were completed either in-person or virtually, and some featured cross-school collaboration. Wolf Trap’s Field Trip Fridays returned this year as a virtual alternative for in-person field trips. Wolf Trap offered educators, parents, and caregivers a behind-the-scenes look to help them produce their own virtual field trips for at-home learning. Wolf Trap’s work with young professionals continued to thrive, as staff presented for a wide array of university and college career centers including American, Carnegie Mellon, George Mason, and Northwestern Universities; the Universities of Maryland, North Carolina, and Oregon; Ithaca College; and College of William and Mary to participate in mock interviews, virtual workshops, and career fairs.

16

EXPANDING SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING A significant emphasis of Wolf Trap Education’s work in 2021 centered on its support

WOLF TRAP’S GRANTS PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL PERFORMING ARTS TEACHERS SUPPORTED VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON ARTS PROJECTS FOR EIGHT LOCAL SCHOOLS

of educators, families, and children, as they wrestled with social, technical, and academic challenges. The practice of social emotional learning (SEL), which has grown exponentially during the pandemic, is a key focus in the education industry as a means to promote the well-being of teachers and students alike. Wolf Trap focused on deepening its SEL-centered professional development services, sharing COVID best practices, and providing extra professional and emotional support to its own roster of Teaching Artists and affiliates. Wolf Trap Teaching Artists drew on their expertise in dance, music, drama, and puppetry to provide educators with mentorship and arts strategies that encouraged students to express their emotions. Wolf Trap Master Teaching Artist Valerie Branch joined Wolf Trap’s affiliate webinar, A Community of Learners, in August to share strategies that encourage teachers and students to express their moods and feelings through movement. Washington, D.C. teacher and frequent Wolf Trap collaborator Kalpana Kumar Sharma also shared some of the SEL-centered practices she employs in the classroom. Wolf Trap devoted the fall 2021 edition of its Education Newsletter to the topic of SEL, providing guidance on arts strategies teachers could use to incorporate SEL in their lessons. Failure is an Option, a dramatic arts collaboration funded through this year’s Wolf Trap’s Grants for High School Performing Arts Teachers, helped Centreville High School students explore the concept of failure through artistic expression, and was an example of SEL’s relevance for older students. Virtual learning proved challenging for both teachers and learners throughout the year, but it was a valuable tool to break down economic and distance barriers, broaden access to arts education for students, and achieve greater equity. As Wolf Trap Education looks toward its next 50 years, its focus will be to continue to prioritize access, and increase its role as a true community partner.

Thank you to our members, corporate and foundation partners, and leadership and legacy donors for making our 50th Anniversary Season so strong and special. Philanthropic support helped Wolf Trap provide a safe and enjoyable return of live performances for the community presented by an array of artists. In addition to concerts, the generosity of donors brought Wolf Trap’s interactive

and accessible education programs to schools and homes in the

Livestream at Home Concerts from Wolf Trap offered members who were not yet ready to return for in-person performances a chance to enjoy select shows virtually. Wolf Trap was thrilled to welcome members back to in-person events. The revamped Associates Pavilion hosted many member events, including Picnics on the Pavilion and the Dinner and a Show series, inviting members to relax and enjoy time together with breathtaking views of the Filene Center prior to a performance. A number of pre-performance events for members and supporters kicked off the summer season, including the annual summer Joint Board and Alumni Dinner. Members and alumni of both the Foundation Board of Directors and Associates Board enjoyed reuniting after being apart last summer. The event was also an occasion to recognize the Foundation’s exceptional cohort of new Board members: Jeremy Blank, Jan Brandt, Leana Katz, Janet Osborn, Alison Tanner, and Clarence Taylor. In November, Bourbon and Bubbles featured a new twist by being outside at the Pavilions at Wolf Trap National Park. This beloved event is a Wolf Trap tradition with distinctive bourbons, sparkling wines, unique champagnes, and a festive fire pit experience. The spirited evening beneath the stars was the conclusion of a spectacular season of special events. Wolf Trap treasured seeing so many donors and supporters after the pause of 2020.
