Business Woman
A charming woman of substance A woman who knows what her name is capable of bringing about and she ensures that with all that responsibility and power, she is doing something good for the society. A homemaker, a devoted mother, a classy wife, a wonderful patron and a woman full of chutzpa-these are just a few things that make Nita Ambani the amazing woman that she is.

The business royalty of India married Mukesh Ambani. Now she runs a not-inconsiderable enterprise with myriad activities. Most things she runs directly — the hospital and the school — are not technically businesses, unlike the Mumbai Indians franchise. But they are enormous and complex organizations nonetheless, employing hundreds of people. Nita Ambani - Chairperson, Dhirubhai Ambani International School (foto: flickr.ro)

It is estimated that over Rs 750 crore in revenues and over Rs 1,000 crore in annual investment budgets is being supervised by Nita Ambani which can definitely termed small.
t’s incredible how many things a person can manage at the same time. From supervising the construction of a new wing at Mumbai’s Hurkisondas Nurrotumdas Hospital, run by a trust controlled by the Dhirubhai Ambani Foundation to making sure that the Mumbai Indians are in perfect shape for hile having the richest Indian for her husband, to the Champions League; and all this while carrying a being an idol in herself as well, Neeta Ambani will queen like grace all the time. Both hers and of others; and even while being in the midst of all the madness happening around her, Nita Ambani’s serenity is commendable.

Everything at Reliance is always a bit of a whirlwind. So many things are happening all the time that you have to constantly shift focus,” she laughs, quoting the reason for all the wait and phone calls that had gone through to reach her.

Why singles are choosing career over romance
N
owadays the dating field has changed and many singles are choosing careers over love. Women are not putting careers on hold because of the love they have for their boyfriends. This was a common practice a few years ago which was seen as a sacrifice for their families.
T
hey might not break up with their boyfriends but they pursue their careers and education as if there were no boyfriends. In the yester years a lover would not leave her sweetheart in one country or state and move to another for education or job-related purposes. It is hard to put a foot in once career and leave unscathed. There has been a stereotype where men focus on career goals while women on the other hand concentrate on their families and romance.
I
n a scientific journal known as gender issues men are more willing to sacrifice careers for the sake of love but women are more stubborn. Researchers asked singles to state their personal goals and 90% of them prioritized financial success, careers and education. They rarely thought about love, romance, relationships, marriage and children. This shows that achieved goals are
nowadays overriding relationship goals. Adam Turner refused to sacrifice three days to see his girlfriend who had come visiting him in campus. He wanted to spend as much time with her as possible but he could not stand missing classes. He was preparing for a test and he said his relationship always come second after his aviation flight management course. He explained it was well worth it because he passed all the tests.
T
he changing dynamics mostly involve the workplace where young people are under so much pressure to perform. This makes the young people who are mostly singles to opt for work over romance. The effect on career on family and that one of love on family are completely different. Good careers influence families in a positive way since good careers equals’ good money which translates to comfortable lives. Love influences a family in a positive way but only if there is money. If for instance a family has love and poor careers which make them broke, they usually experience a lot of financial wrangles. his dilutes love leading to poor quality families. This might be the reason why many singles even who hope to settle down some day are putting career as their first priority. ,

Fashion houses such as Lanvin and Gucci have started exclusive baby clothing lines. High-street stores are quick to follow their more exclusive counterparts’ lead in offering chic, stylish (but thankfully much more affordable) baby fashion lines. Thankfully, the majority of these designs do not sexualize children, nor do they turn them into miniature versions of their fashionable parents. Indeed, the designers seem to have made a commendable (and successful) attempt to retain the innocence and sweetness of children’s clothing. Most designs are highly wearable and feature clean, non-fussy lines, making their exclusiveness felt more in the luxuriousness of the fabrics used as well as the exquisitely clean cuts. INTERVIEW
Interview with Soraya Deborggraeve As founder/C.E.O. of the urban organization, Beat The Streetz, artist manager, mother of 2 children and talented poet, Soraya Deborggraeve works with local artists and independent musicians combining her passion to help out people and the passion for music through hip hop and the urban lifestyle to reach out to the kids who can’t find what they like in the regular after school activities. By giving them a positive way to spend their time, they try to keep them off the street. Her passion for what she does is fueled by her own unique path in the business: first, as the manager to local artists in Belgium; second, as a founder of the non-profit organization Beat The Streetz) What made you choose to be an music artist manager? I sort of rolled into it. I knew quite a lot of people who were trying to do something with music. I would always try to help them out where I could. Send info about contests, get them in touch with people I believed could help their career, stuff like that. Then one day 1 of the guys told me that he has a manager, who wasn’t doing anything for him. How did I feel about becoming his manager instead. And that got the ball rolling How long have you been in Artist Management? I started out in 2002. I did it for a few years, but then both my main artist and my focus shifted to other careers. I still help out where I can, but no longer as the role of artist manager What are some of the nightmares of being an Artist Manager? Musicians’ egos!! I’ve worked with people who’s egos were bigger than their musical talent. I know that sounds harsh, but that’s also part of being an artist manager: be honest about what works and what not. And push an artist out of his comfort zone of being surrounded by people who will always say that everything he or she does sounds wonderful. I once set up a show for one of my artist, he would be the main act on a big sports event, 40.000 people were expected, a lot of celebrities. I had other obligations so I couldn’t be there on time. He knew that and the organization knew that. But it was no problem, as long as he would show up. A half hour after he was supposed to go on stage, the organization called me that he never showed up. I started calling. He didn’t pick up. In the evening he sent me a text in which he said that his throat hurts so he couldn’t perform. Ego. Either he was too scared to perform for a big crowd like that, or he felt like he was all that that he could let everybody down and we’d all say “oh well, it’s ok.” I stopped working with him right away and apologized to the organization. Because as an artist manager, you are the contact person between the artist and the organization. If the artist doesn’t show up, you are making a bad name for yourself as a manager too. What are some factors that determine whether or not you will manage an artist? Talent, will power and being open for new things are very important things I look for in an artist. For example, when we first meet, I will ask them out of the blue to sing or rap or freestyle one of their songs for me. If they can’t do that on the spot, how will they be able to do it on stage? I always take my time to get to know them and see how they work and how they think. What they expect from me and what they expect from their musical career. What are their goals? How much , 16 Woman’s Essence Magazine
time and sacrifices do they put into it? Those things will help me determine whether I want to give it a try or not. What are your responsibilities at Beat The Streetz organization? I am very focused on keeping it positive. The kids we work with already have a bad name in general. People always seem to think that they are a lost cause. And even a lot of these kids believe that there’s nothing positive they can do. I try to help them focus on their talents and their positive sides, on creating situations in which they feel safe enough to experiment and which will make them feel successful. We also try to reflect this positive image to local governments, city councils, … What are some mistakes you see artists making when approaching you, or for that matter, managers in general? I’ve noticed that a lot of upcoming artists have the wrong idea about what a manager is supposed to do or capable of doing for them. If you talk to the artist who is looking for a manager, you’ll find out that most of them are looking for a booking agent. Not an artist manager. They just want somebody to set up shows for them and maybe promote the upcoming albums. An artist manager is so much more than that. He/she will work with the artist on any level, from finding a good studio, producer, collaborations, arrange shows, work out contract details to determine the right image and setting up a team to work with the musician. What education and training do you think is useful for your job as an artist manager? There are specific artist management educations in business schools. I did it on my own. I also have my event management degree. Because I personally felt like I should learn as much as
INTERVIEW possible about all sides of the industry. If I know what it takes to organise an event or concert, I have a better idea on how to convince the organisor that my artist is perfect for that event. Any type of business and management education is useful. It doesn’t have to be focused on music only. Psychology, studying body language, communication, … Even those self help books can help you to build a solid base as a artist manager. Was making business connections initially a hard thing to do, or was a lot of it in place already with your background in performing? It was really hard. The connections with the artists are easily made and kept. Because they are always open to people who can help them out in one way or another. Even if it’s just sharing networks. But the other side of the business is a lot more difficult. The booking agents, concert and festival organizers, record labels, … they are very reluctant to accept new people into their business network. Which is understandable. People always want something from them. So that takes a lot of hard work. I’ve also noticed that as a woman you have to work twice as hard to be taken seriously. I was working in the hip hop scene. Which is a music business that is determined and controlled by men. A lot of times the people on both sides of the industry assume that a woman is doing it just to have some fun with the men - groupie style. Or she has no idea what she’s talking about. So the struggle is twice as hard: first you need to convince people to take you seriously and only then you can start building your network.
For aspiring managers, would you say that networking is the most important skill for breaking into the field? Yes, networking is very important. To build a good network, I’d say that people skills are the main key. You need to know with whom you can be casual - friendly and which people prefer a strictly business approach. Don’t be too pushy but don’t give them a chance to forget you nor your artists neither. Learn from every single person in the music industry. Even if you have a conversation with somebody who sells tickets at a concert place. Pay attention, you might just learn a nice little trick or catch a name of a person of interest. Another very important skill you will need is: know your artist!! Know what your artist is capable of and what not. Know how they react in certain situations. Are they hot tempered? Are they always late? Do they have an unpleasant attitude backstage? How are they towards other artists, roadies, caterers…. it will take time to learn all of this, but I believe that it’s important. Because your artist is your business card as much as you are his business card
“A song that will sell well is one that people will either relate to a song that touches something inside of the listener.”
Did your studies help shape how you pursue being a manager, or even being an entertainer, in recent years? I have a social work degree, mainly to work with children and adults with mental and physical problems. So that didn’t really help me out with me being a manager. I did do a lot of self study and mainly live it and learn it. Asking a million questions to a million different people, being flexible and learning quickly.
Looking to the future, are there any other areas you’d like to explore? Yes, I want to do something with poetry/spoken word. In my area the poetry scene is as good as non-existing. I know a lot of great poets, but every single one of them lives abroad. So I might have to look into that. Because I’ve always live by the principle: instead of complaining about what’s not, take some action and make it happen. Any last words, shout outs, thank yous, advice, etc? I just want to send a shout out to Mel Wright. He knows why. Thank you for taking time to talk with me. I hope this interview was of some help to those of you reading this! Good luck!
As a manager and label what are you looking for in bands? Basically, you are looking at the artist or band as a product. Can I sell this? Is there a demand for what this artist offers? Can the product be sold on a long term basis or is this just a one-day’s success? Are they determined enough to work hard for it and accept changes and criticism? Are they mature enough to realize that, once I take them on, this is their career and not just a hobby to pass some free time? So you have many things to consider, when it comes to their music as a product, but also see the musician or band as your employee. This person will bring in the money for you In your opinion, what is a good song? Something that catches my attention from the get-go. Not just 1 in a dosen. It needs an interesting beat, a good flow and the lyrics need to have a decent content. Or it should be a club banger from the first 10 seconds. A song that will sell well is one that people will either relate to, a song that touches something inside of the listener. Or it has a catchy beat and a chorus that you just can’t get out of your head. What do you feel is some of the biggest mistakes and false mindsets of younger artists today? That they need to be signed to a record label to make money. In general, an artist who has a good album coming out is better off with a decent distribution deal. If you can sell them yourselves on the streets, markets, retail shops and what not, even better. Get creative. They should realize that the more people you have working for you, the more people need to get a share of your money.

What are the common parenting types T
he Four Styles of Parenting. Most people around the world handle their children correctly, and many of the m do so simply because that was the way that they were raised and it comes naturally. Learning the most appropriate method of parenting your children is built up over time, and there are four styles of parenting that can be seen in the population at large. You can read the different styles of parenting expounded upon below, and you can make up your mind as to which is the proper style for you to use.
Parenting Style 1: Uninvolved Parenting
T
he first of the styles of parenting is the uninvolved parenting. This style of parenting means that the parent has little interaction with the children, little control over their life, and little to do with the children. Unfortunately, the number of parents who are forced to use this style of parenting are numerous, as many parents leave to work early and come home late at night.
U
ninvolved parenting is the quickest way to have children that act out and try to get attention, and it is
vital that you avoid uninvolved parenting. Every parent needs to have an active involvement in their children’s lives, and you will find that uninvolved parenting is by far the worst of the incorrect styles of parenting your children.
Parenting Style 2: Permissive Parenting
T
O
ne huge drawback of this type of parenting is the lack of caring and interpersonal relationships that this style of parenting creates. If your children are terrified of your next word or action, there is no way that they will bring their problems to you for fear that you will yell at them. This type of parenting often results in children that start acting out in rebellion against their parents, and a large hildren that receive permissive percentage of juvenile delinquents parenting are those who end up come from homes of this type. getting in trouble simply because they have no idea that there are Parenting Style 4: any limits to life. Perfectly Floral A
wedding without flowers is like Britain without rain. Organising the floral aspect of a wedding is one element that must be perfected; the traditional bouquet is tossed to the single women or kept for sentiment, buttonholes are given to the important men and after the venues are decorated, the scenery blossoms with the couple’s unique personality. A bare venue can still be a beautiful setting to get married in, but once the personal touches have been made and the couple’s theme colour is washed over the venue, it will show character.

irls dream of this day from when they are little to when they finally hear those courageous words Will you marry me? It might not be every girls dream but somewhere along the line the idea of wedding bells could chime every once in a while. And when they do, suddenly there’s panic; can I actually plan a wedding? I wouldn’t even know where to begin! People get married all the time, wedding rings are engraved, florists are called upon, hen and stag do’s rip up the town, and guest lists start to get political. Aside from the millions of people that do get married every second of the day, it all comes down to the individual couple. Everyone is different; the proposal might not actually be down on one knee, it could happen sky diving (in that case the knees would not be quite so controllable), and the wedding itself could also fly off in different directions. This is where the bride’s journey begins – can that dream wedding become a reality?

he proposal: as soon as that dazzling ring encircles your finger, the news will spread like confetti. Perhaps you’re swept off your feet to Paris, taken out to a classy restaurant or guided to the first place that you met each other all those years ago – the beautiful setting can sometimes tell a lot about the man you’re going to marry. The night sky in Paris is warm and the view is exquisite. You and your beloved are holding hands across the white linen covered table that features a red rose in a tall vase. You have been left notes and instructions of where to meet your future husband and when you finally see an abandoned lit up Double Decker bus you realise why you’ve been directed to it. See, these men have to think of everything! And then the moment comes, after you’ve savoured the romantic gesture that seriously doesn’t come along every day, and your heart beat quickens. You feel nervous, despite how close you both are.
“Will you marry me?” Four simple words.

This is the first of many decisions; the where, the when and the what? The who should already be decided. There are many decisions, but it’s all towards a dream day which will definitely make it more fun. So instead of hitting the panic button when the diamond lights up your finger, just revel in the enjoyment of actually being engaged. Soulmate relationships S
oulmates are people who have the relationship most of us dreamt of when we were young and innocent: loving and erotic, inspiring and safe and – best of all – lasting. However, soulmates are not a gift from heaven which some of us had the luck to receive while the majority has been left starving. Everybody who seriously wants to live in such a relationship can learn how to do that.
T
here are four basic dynamics which are essential to create this wonderful relationship that most people dream of.
Commitment to love and to grow in love
M
any people wrongly assume that their love would always flow beautifully if they would only meet the right person and that their more negative and selfish sides will only surface if their partner suddenly becomes difficult or boring. The truth is that our love will only be as strong as our commitment to always regard the needs of our partner as important as our own. Not more important and not less – just as important.
too calculating. However, after many years of working as a psychotherapist with people who have relationship problems I have to say: If we want a great relationship we can’t afford the law of an even deal to go out of balance from the very first moment when we meet a potential partner. This is particularly important for women who have a tendency to disregard the law of an even deal to their own disadvantage.
Harmonious and erotic patterns between female and male energies
N
ow we have love and equality but what about romance? Romance and erotic energy work best if a woman enjoys her femininity and a man enjoys his masculinity. Then both partners can start the romantic and erotic dance that is possible only if two people are delightfully different. The archetypal romantic gesture is when the male gives to the female and if the female receives gracefully. This is not an attack on the victories of feminism but simply appreciates what most people find romantically and erotically fulfilling.
The law of an even deal
The unavoidable merging-process between two people in a sexual relationship
M
oulmates have agreed to follow the advice of the happier and wiser partner (who is in this role may often change) so that the couple as a whole can develop in amazing leaps and starts and bring wonderful things to the world. If these areas of a relationship are positively in place both people will be very happy. ,
U
nfortunately, a commitment to love alone – beautiful as it is – is not enough. There are a huge number of people who are very devoted to their partners and still their relationships are very unhappy because their love and dedication is not reciprocated. The law of an even deal says that all giving and taking in a relationship must roughly amount to an even deal if both partners are to feel satisfied. This really is common sense but many women still get the rough end when it comes to distributing the chores and family duties. Unconsciously they have allowed the law of an even deal to become uneven by being too submissive or too forgiving. any people do not like the thought of an even deal in a romantic relationship because it feels
M
any people do not realise just how much two partners can hold each other back in their overall happiness. Being in a sexual relationship is like sitting in one emotional boat where you can only float or sink together. Unfortunately, it is the partner who is more unloving who will determine the overall atmosphere of a couple. This is due to the fact that negative emotions are more dominant than positive ones.
