Champion women through the arts Since its opening in 1987, the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) has worked to address the art world’s gender imbalance. NMWA brings recognition to the achievements of women artists of all periods and nationalities by exhibiting, preserving, acquiring, and researching art by women and by teaching the public about their accomplishments. As the latest statistics show, even in 2020, gender bias in the art world persists. Not, however, here at NMWA. In our historic building in Washington, D.C., women artists are celebrated and uplifted every day—and we advocate for their representation all around the world. FROM THE FOUNDER Dear Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, While the difficulties of the ongoing pandemic have confronted us all, the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) has risen to the challenges of these months. Our leadership, staff, and supporters are carrying us through this time with commitment and care. Reflecting on our recent fiscal year calls to mind the wonderful exhibitions of late 2019 and early 2020. The museum debuted Judy Chicago’s newest body of work, The End: A Meditation on Death and Extinction. It drew record-breaking attendance and a rave review from the Washington Post, among other prominent publications. We have known and advocated for Chicago’s work for decades, stretching back to the time when she was searching for a permanent home for The Dinner Party. Our partnership extends to NMWA’s Betty Boyd Dettre Library and Research Center, which holds Chicago’s visual archives, part of the Judy Chicago Research Portal that recently debuted to the public. In October, we opened Women Artists of the Dutch Golden Age in the Teresa Lozano Long Gallery. This focus exhibition included paintings that showcase the talents of women from this groundbreaking era in art history. The beautiful floral still lifes, prints, and portraits were complemented by rare book loans from the Folger Shakespeare Library and National Gallery of Art that testified to the artists’ renown. Among other press, the Wall Street Journal called the show “thoughtfully selected, informative, and sometimes surprising.” Across the country and internationally, our committees hosted programs in their regions in preparation for the exhibition Paper Routes—Women to Watch 2020. Many of them organized talks and exhibitions to share the works of nominated artists from their regions. Partnerships led to wonderful presentations of the nominated artists’ work at venues such as Sotheby’s in London, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, and Gallery Kayafas in Boston. These programs spread the museum’s mission as well as the work of emerging and underrepresented women artists around the world. We ended fiscal 2020 on solid financial ground, thanks to our dedicated members and friends. Your sustained commitment ensures the health of our museum so that it can continue to celebrate the great women artists of yesterday and today.

FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, On March 8, 2020, NMWA was alive with celebration on International Women’s Day. We hosted more than two thousand guests, who listened to live music from local women musicians, participated in volunteer-led conversations, shopped a market of work by local women artisans, and tapped into their creativity with hands-on crafts. Our exhibitions Graciela Iturbide’s Mexico and Delita Martin: Calling Down the Spirits had opened to great fanfare and attendance. Our Women, Arts, and Social Change initiative had just hosted a sold-out screening of the 2020 Academy Award-winning animated short film Hair Love. Though we would temporarily close NMWA shortly afterward due to COVID-19, I look at Director’s photo by Michele Mattei
this moment with gratitude and pride. It represented a year of energizing and successful programming centered on women artists—which continued even after our work shifted online. From their homes, NMWA staff kept up the momentum and enthusiasm for our mission, working tirelessly to share our exhibitions and programs online and create new avenues of virtual connection. We launched NMWA @ Home, a hub for online resources including presentations of our special exhibitions. We also introduced Art Chat @ Five, a new weekly virtual conversation series, and more initiatives that you will read about in these pages. Our digital engagement department supported the museum’s virtual shift while in the final stages of a website redesign. The new site debuted in June with a fresh design and structure that emphasizes our art and advocacy and will support our growing web presence for many years to come. In May, our digital team’s efforts and creativity were recognized when NMWA won a People’s Choice Webby Award for Best Social Media Account for our @WomenInTheArts Instagram. If you do not already, I urge you to follow us to stay connected. Over the past months, the global pandemic has exposed our systemic social inequalities, and the movement for racial justice has asked us to address structural racism. At our museum, founded to redefine traditional histories of art that excluded women, we commit to centering racial equity and championing Black women artists and women artists of color. We have been listening, learning, and creating a plan to be part of the solution. I am incredibly grateful to our members and friends for continuing to support us through these difficult times. Because of your donations, words of support, and commitment to the museum, we are able to continue to support women artists and amplify their art in a time when we need it most.

September 2019 Artist Judy Chicago debuts her latest body of work, The End: A Meditation on Death and Extinction. In tandem with the exhibition, NMWA releases Judy Chicago: New Views, the first major monograph on the artist in nearly twenty years, and features the artist in a Fresh Talk.
November 2019 The Women, Arts, and Social Change initiative hosts three sold-out, debut performances of 19: The Musical, a retelling of the story of Alice Paul, Ida B. Wells, Susan B. Anthony, Carrie Chapman Catt, Inez Milholland, and the other suffragists who fought to get women the right to vote.
February 2020 Graciela Iturbide’s Mexico opens. The landmark exhibition, organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, presents more than 140 photographs from the artist’s prolific five-decade-long career that tell a visual story of Mexico since the late 1960s. March 2020 The museum hosts a celebration on International Women’s Day with free admission, morning yoga, art talks, a women authors’ book swap with Brightest Young Things, live music, and more. Sew Creative Lounge leads hands-on activities (pictured left). Vendors include Georgetown Cupcake, Girl Scouts—Nation’s Capital, and Salt & Sundry.
March 2020 In response to the museum’s temporary closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NMWA @ Home launches. Online exhibitions enable the museum to continue sharing work on view by Graciela Iturbide and Delita Martin. Special audio commentary by Martin and a video tour of her Texas studio enrich her online exhibition (screen shot pictured right).
June 2020 On a day when thousands of peaceful protestors gathered in support of Black lives, NMWA commissions two Washington, D.C.-based artists to paint murals on the plywood over the museum’s façade, with the support of MaryRoss Taylor. Trap Bob (pictured left) speaks of art’s ability to both document history and imagine new ways forward. She says, “I want to spread the message of change.”

Ursula von Rydingsvard: The Contour of Feeling March 22–July 28, 2019 This landmark exhibition presented the artist’s monumental cedar wood sculptures evoking the grandeur and power of nature. Judy Chicago—The End: A Meditation on Death and Extinction September 19, 2019–January 20, 2020 Chicago’s newest body of work—nearly forty works of painted porcelain and glass and two large bronze sculptures—profoundly addressed human mortality and species extinction. Women Artists of the Dutch Golden Age October 11, 2019–January 5, 2020 This focus exhibition examined the lives and work of several highly successful artists in the Netherlands during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Acquisition Spotlight
A June 2020 feature in Bmore Art praised NMWA’s cutting-edge collecting practices. “What you see in NMWA’s collection are insightful finds, ahead-of-thecurve discoveries, and a strong commitment to racial, gender, and LGBTQI diversity.”
Renowned Portugese artist Joana Vasconcelos’s nearly six-foot-tall glass and textile chandelier Rubra (2016) (pictured opposite, top left) was added to NMWA’s collection through a gift from museum patron Christine Suppes. In Rubra, Vasconcelos reinvigorates traditional craft through contemporary artistic practices. This sculpture features handmade wool crochet, lace, sequined fabric, gold tassels, delicate beaded ornaments, Murano glass, and LED lightbulbs.

Conservation Spotlight In fall 2019, conservation researchers from the Smithsonian American Art Museum visited NMWA to examine two beloved paintings by Alma Woodsey Thomas—Iris, Tulips, Jonquils, and Crocuses (1968) and Orion (1973)—and share new findings on the artist.
Fun Fact In 2020, NMWA acquired 161 photos by renowned documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark, donated by members of the Photography Buyers Syndicate.

Linda Nochlin: The Maverick She March 8–October 8, 2020 In collaboration with the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art, this exhibition showcased a selection of papers and ephemera that illustrate the awardwinning scholar, art historian, and critic’s remarkable contributions to art and culture.
Art Book Bonanza In July 2019, NMWA hosted the third annual DC Art Book Fair, organized by the DC Art Book Collective, during a free Community Day. More than 2,060 visitors attended, shopping the zines, comics, art books, and other ephemera from 50 vendors. In 2020, the LRC acquired artists’ books by Suzanne Coley, Tia Blassingame, Chandler O’Leary, Jamila Zahra Felton, María Verónica San Martin, and Julie Sheah for the collection.

Judy Chicago Research Portal In October, the Judy Chicago Research Portal launched. A collaboration between NMWA, Penn State University, and Harvard’s Schlesinger Library, the public, digital repository holds Chicago’s paper archives (Schlesinger Library), art education archives (Penn State), and visual archives (NMWA). During the fiscal year, the LRC added nearly 5,000 slides to the Judy Chicago Visual Archive.

The museum’s digital image library, BETTY, grew to include 36,048 images that were viewed 48,879 times. The library includes images from events and exhibitions as well as collection works. The total number of digital image downloads in 2020 was more than 6,700.

Art, Books, and Creativity (ABC) Initiative In July 2019, NMWA educators welcomed teachers to the tenth annual ABC Teacher Institute and the fourth Advanced Teacher Institute:
• 523 visitors attended 16 Fierce Women 2.0 tours.
• 37 participants hailed from public and private schools across the country—D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Minnesota, Nevada, South Carolina, and Texas.
• 137 participants attended 2 artist talks with Janaina Tschäpe and Delita Martin.
• In total, participants teach approximately 10,040 students per year.
• 402 visitors attended 35 weekly Gallery Talks.

Sharing Knowledge During the National Art Education Association’s tenth annual SummerVision program, educators introduced 30 teachers to the Fierce Women tour, #5WomenArtists challenge, and the museum’s resources and programs. Nearly 8,101 packets of See for Yourself Cards were distributed prior to NMWA’s temporary closure. New online thematic card sets were curated exclusively for the NMWA @ Home initiative. Virtual Connection Inspired by the museum’s popular Gallery Talks, educators launched Art Chat @ Five, weekly online chats about selected artworks in the museum’s collection. There were 140 attendees in 2020, each week filled to capacity. Slow Art Day, the annual international event, went virtual. Educators hosted 15 participants from D.C., California, New York, Pennsylvania, and the U.K.

Program Partners NMWA educators worked closely with partner organizations on- and off-line, including Slow Art Day, DC Public Schools, the Phillips Collection, DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative, DCProject Zero, Georgetown University, the George Washington University, Girl Scouts—Nation’s Capital, and more. In spring 2020, the digital engagement department led NMWA’s shift to online programming during the temporary closure due to COVID-19. Working crossdepartmentally, digital staff facilitated the creation of NMWA @ Home, a virtual hub that showcased the museum’s online offerings—many created in the first weeks of the pandemic:
In March, the fifth year of the museum’s acclaimed social media campaign #5WomenArtists kicked off with a special focus on women artists who address social issues. Despite coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic, the campaign was a success:
• Storytime with Women in the Arts video series features children’s books authored or illustrated by women. • NMWA Coloring Pages feature favorite artworks from the collection. • Four online exhibitions and more in process present art to visitors who are unable to attend in person. 16 NATIONAL MUSEUM OF WOMEN IN THE ARTS
• 675 cultural institutions and nearly 5,129 individuals participated; participants were located across 35 countries and 49 U.S. states, plus D.C. and Puerto Rico. • 4,092 Instagram posts and 9,568 tweets were shared using the hashtag. • 11 museums took over the @WomenInTheArts account in March to highlight women artists in their collections and exhibitions.
Social Media Engagement Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook engagement remains a key way for the museum to expand our audience and champion women in the arts. In 2020, NMWA reached more than 57,000 followers on Twitter (a 10% increase over 2019), 100,000 on Instagram (a 54% increase over 2019), and 55,800 on Facebook (a 7% increase over 2019). An Instagram post wishing artist Audrey Niffenegger a happy birthday was the most liked post, garnering 4,717 likes. A Twitter post for #MeanGirlsDay (pictured left), honoring the popular 2004 film with memes and other activities, was the most popular, garnering 4,400 likes and 1,100 retweets.
#MuseumsThankHealthHeroes On April 1, NMWA organized the museum community for a mass social media action to thank frontline healthcare workers. On Twitter, 956 contributors generated 1,389 tweets that reached 13,834,577 people. On Instagram, 183 contributors generated 189 posts that cumulatively received 28,542 likes and reached 2,719,852 people.

Looking Forward With the win of the Webby People’s Voice Award for Best Social Media Account (Instagram) in May, and the launch of the new https://nmwa.org website in June, NMWA ended 2020 on a strong digital note, amplifying our mission, programs, and collection in times of limited in-person visitorship. Committees support the museum and champion women artists in their regions, continually extending NMWA’s reach.
Preparing for Paper Routes— Women to Watch 2020 The sixth installment in the museum’s Women to Watch exhibition series and the largest to date, Paper Routes (October 8, 2020–January 18, 2021) presents the work of emerging and underrepresented contemporary women artists who are transforming paper, a ubiquitous and eclectic material, into complex works of art. Throughout the fiscal year, 10 committees collaborated with museums and galleries in their regions to present local versions of Paper Routes—from Chile and California to Massachusetts and the U.K.
Committee Activities Among many committee-organized activities in 2020: • The Mid-Atlantic Committee held a panel discussion at NMWA with Paper Routes nominees Rachel Farbiarz, Jae Ko, and Julie Wolfe. • The New York Committee hosted a panel discussion at the Brooklyn Museum that was moderated by Carmen Hermo, associate curator of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art. • President of Les Amis du NMWA Danielle Grall served as a juror for the Art Absolument Prize for Outsider Art at the Outside Art Fair in Paris.

Member Spotlight A NMWA member for twenty-six years, retired U.S. Navy admiral Michelle Howard is passionate about gender equity and advancement—in all fields. Throughout her thirty-five-year naval career, she was at the vanguard of changing laws that allowed women to advance in the military. Howard said, “I serve to ensure the freedom of citizens. And creativity—artistry—is one of the greatest expressions of freedom.”
Longtime & New Supporters NMWA’s membership base includes more than 11,000 supporters; 2,772 new members joined in FY20. In 2020, NMWA’s membership base included 4,159 active charter members—individuals who began giving in 1993 or before. 1,656 members who are still active gave their first gift before the museum opened in 1987!

PUBLICATIONS Women in the Arts Magazine Throughout 2020, Women in the Arts magazine, a benefit for NMWA members, illuminated the museum’s special exhibitions, programs, and collection with articles, artist interviews, and more. The magazine was a key platform for sharing stories and news about the museum and its programs during the temporary closure.
Judy Chicago: New Views In September 2020, NMWA and Scala Arts Publishers released the first major monograph on feminist artist Judy Chicago in nearly 20 years. The fully illustrated volume provides fresh perspectives on Chicago’s career from Sarah Thornton, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Chad Alligood, Manuela Ammer, Massimiliano Gioni, Philipp Kaiser, Jonathan D. Katz, Martha C. Nussbaum, and William J. Simmons.
Broad Strokes Blog Since 2009, NMWA’s blog, Broad Strokes, has published engaging pieces on special exhibitions, the collection, the lives and works of women artists, and much more. In 2020, more than 115 posts were published. 22 NATIONAL MUSEUM OF WOMEN IN THE ARTS
A blog series on Graciela Iturbide’s Mexico expanded on the exhibition’s prominent themes and subjects
MUSEUM SHOP Shop #5WomenArtists For NMWA’s #5WomenArtists campaign, the shop created original merchandise designed around the question “Can you name five women artists?” Camper mugs, magnets, T-shirts, and notebooks spread the word about the campaign and challenged people to engage in person as well as online.
Shop Online In June, in tandem with NMWA’s website redesign, the shop debuted a new online store at https://shop.nmwa.org. The updated infrastructure can feature and process more items. The site’s new organization encourages easy navigation and browsing.
Shop Events The shop supported museum programs throughout the year. In October, the annual MakeHER Mart, part of the 2019 MakeHER Summit, featured the handmade art and merchandise of local women artisans. A wide variety of products including jewelry, fine art, home accents, and personal accessories were featured.
