CARING AT A HIGHER LEVEL MEANS PERFORMING AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. St. Joseph’s is the only hospital in Syracuse and Central NY rated high performing in ALL NINE procedures measured by U.S. News & World Report. Proof that a higher level of care leads to the highest level of performance.

runs rampant.
ost people associate this time of year as happy and holly jolly, but in reality for many—at least those who inhabit the icier climates of the country—it is a time where they struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder(SAD). The days are shorter and the conditions outside the comfort of home are hostile and unforgiving. The wind howls, snow covers all exit paths and black ice lingers, waiting for unsuspecting victims to succumb to its slipperiness. Seasonal depression
Here are some ways to combat it: 1. Dive Into Some Chocolate—Certain foods like chocolate can help enhance you mood and alleviate anxiety. Multiple studies show that dark chocolate actually increases the production of endorphins—the chemicals that bring the brain pleasure— and also possesses the chemical serotonin, which is known as an anti-depressant. So this winter when the weather outside gets frightful, don’t hesitate to head for the hot cocoa or even just a massive chuck out of a Hershey’s. 2. Work It Out—Exercise is key during the chilly months of the year. It boosts the same feel- good chemicals, similar to chocolatejust a bit more effectively. Technology can lend a hand here. According to a Dr. Helen M. Ferrell, a psychiatrist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center: “Wearable tech, like Fitbit, encourages users to move more, while social media platforms, like the photo-sharing app Instagram, may lift moods by inspiring wanderlust.” 3. Crank the Tunes— Apparently it soothes the savage beast and the unhappy human. Not only can music relax our minds and bodies, but it also slows our pulse and heart rates, lowers blood pressure, decreases the level of stress hormones and can also increase self-esteem. 4. Plan a Future Trip—Start Google searching…now! You’ll be surprised how much it will cheer you up to look at pictures of white sandy beaches, cloudless skies, gorgeous resorts and mouthwatering Pina coladas. “Scheduling some future event or activity they can get excited about, like a spring vacation, or even an athletic event, can be very helpful,” Dr. Farrell said. “Winter can be a great time to do that.” 5. Tis The Season of Giving—Not only can giving your time to help out a charity make you feel all toasty inside and provide you with that human connection, volunteering can also improve your mental health. In a paper published by BMC Health, Dr. Suzanne Richards and her colleagues at Exeter Medical School found “that volunteering is associated with lower depression, increased well-being, and a 22 percent reduction in the risk of dying.” Go bond and care about others! 6. Get Outside—“There’s a strong correlation of having daylight and brightness, and when that’s taken away, it can really have some consequences to someone’s mood,” Dr. Farrell said. “A lot of people tend to stay inside, but I would encourage people to get outside even if it’s cloudy out. It’s also important to keep the house better lit; buy bright lights — even fluorescent lights help.” 7. Get a New Hobby—According to Sue Pavlovich of the Seasonal Affective Disorder Association(SADA), “Keeping your mind active with a new interest seems to ward off symptoms of SAD,” Pavlovich says. “It could be anything, such as playing bridge, singing, knitting, joining a gym, keeping a journal, or writing a blog. The important thing is that you have something to look forward to and concentrate on.”

8. Christmas Movie Marathon—Just don’t forget the popcorn with extra butter, of course! 9. Turn Back the Clock—Revert to your childhood self. Have a nostalgic winter wonderland of a day full of ice skating, sledding, ski-
ing, building snowmen, making snow angels or even constructing a massive snow fort. Perhaps you’ll even catch some snowflakes on your tongue.
10. Pamper Yourself—Take a day and make it all about you. Get that facial you’ve been talking about for months, go on a mini shopping spree, partake in a paint n’ sip class, unroll your toga mat, treat yourself to the movies(don’t forget the buttered popcorn!) or even order your absolute favorite food for take out and rent a movie at home. Just have some good old fashioned fun and do something—or a couple of things— that you’ve been longing to do but never seem to make the time. 11. Stay on Top—Take on online class or tutorial. Education will set you free, perhaps even from your melancholy. Keeping yourself busy is always best.

“Eye”
want to look as young as
I feel!!!
O
ften in my business, women come to me and complain that they feel younger than what they see in the mirror. Expressions like “The eyes are the mirror of the soul” or “Your eyes are a reflection of your spirit” often cause women to be distressed because they feel that they are still vibrant and yet a multitude of factors may leave their eyes looking more tired and aged than they are. The topic of improving the under eye skin is commonly discussed in the plastic surgeon’s office. The topic is difficult because there are so many factors to be considered. The skin under our eyes is most often the first area where signs of aging appear. Most women know that a lack of sleep or a day of excess sodium intake can dramatically affect the look of their eyes. There are many problems that can be addressed. Puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles are some of the most common complaints. Patients come into the office and hope that there is simple a cream or injection or even procedure that will make these area look years younger. While there are modalities that help, the best thing to do is to protect the skin in the first place. Proper hydration of the skin both internally and externally by drinking plenty of water, avoiding excess amounts of caffeine and alcohol that tend to dehydrate you.
By: Beth Phillips,RPAC Keeping allergies under control and using anti-histamines to shrink swollen vessels and tissue. Avoiding sun damage by applying a daily sunscreen to the skin under the eyes and wearing sunglasses when in direct sunlight. Avoiding smoking is a must. Unfortunately, heredity often plays a significant role in the appearance of a person’s under eyes. In these cases, we need to look for treatments instead of just good habits. For fine lines, retinoid creams are helpful as a maintenance regimen. Botox is often another first line fix for under eyes. By placing Botox in the muscles that cause the skin to wrinkle thousands of times a day (as people often do with facial expressions), it allows the skin to rest and be less “worn” in its appearance. Ablative lasers are often used to resurface the under eye skin, and IPL can be used to help with dark pigmentation. Dermal fillers such as Volbella, Belotero, Restylane and Voluma can be used to help fill in areas that have lost volume. These fillers need to be placed at an appropriate depth to avoid further discoloration caused by a phenomenon called the Tyndall Effect. Fillers in this area should be placed by someone with significant experience with treating under eyes. Most of the injections in this area are considered “off label,” but can be placed safely using the proper
techniques. There is also a surgical procedure called a lower blepharoplasty that can be performed to improve the lower eyelid. This procedure is performed with either an incision that runs just below the lower lash line or one inside the lower lid. The traditional blepharoplasty has an incision that runs along the lower lash line. Fat is removed or repositioned, and skin is removed. Sometimes muscles and/ or ligaments are tightened-this is called a canthopexy. Alternatively, a trans conjunctival blepharoplasty involves an incision inside the eyelid with fat removal or repositioning without the removal of skin. There is also another procedure called a pinch blepharoplasty that removes less skin and is usually performed in conjunction with laser resurfacing. Rejuvenation of the under eyes is possible with varying results, and the treatment is often multi-factorial to achieve the optimal result. As always, a consultation with a qualified professional is always the first step to implementing a skin-care regimen that best suits your needs. THERE WILL BE
NOTHING
TO CELEBRATE
T
he Holiday Season is here. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukah, Office Parties, House Parties and New Years will soon occupy all of us and our families. Many of these celebrations will involve the consumption of alcohol, and many of us will be driving to and from these social gatherings. It is not only a time to enjoy your friends and family but a time to be careful. If you aren’t, there will be nothing to celebrate. An arrest for Driving While Intoxicated will be humiliating, time consuming, expensive and may well affect you for the rest of your life. Please be careful. For the purpose of this article, it is my intention to review the ramifications of a “first” DWI arrest. Let’s assume you have been pulled over for a minor traffic violation or equipment violation on the way home from a social function at which you have had“one to many.”(All of the following is stated as if you are in Onondaga County and may not apply to other jurisdictions). Even the slightest hint of the smell of alcohol, a sound or hesitation in your speech or something about your driving will trigger Onondaga County’s and New York State’s experienced and well trained police officers to ask you where you are coming from and where you are going. In a moment, you may find yourself on the side of the road doing a Field Sobriety Test. (walk a straight line, touch your nose, etc.) After that you may be blowing into a device called an Alco-Sensor. Based on the results from those tests you may be arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and then subjected to a “Breathalyzer” test in a police station to determine the percentage of alcohol in your blood. If your test result is .08 percent or higher, you will be charged with DWI (a misdemeanor

By: Jeffrey Drimer, Esq. criminal offense under the Vehicle and Traffic Law of the State of New York). You may be given an appearance ticket telling you when and where to come to Court to answer these charges or even held in Custody until you are arraigned. You will be fingerprinted and your picture taken. (Your arrest will appear in the local newspaper). In the meantime, your vehicle may be towed and placed in storage at your expense. It will then be necessary for you to retain an attorney to help you through the process of defending yourself. The legal fees could range anywhere from $1,500 to $3,500 (without a trial). Take care in hiring a lawyer; experience and compassion are good things to check into. Referrals from friends and family are a good idea. At your first appearance in Court, your right to drive will usually be suspended (suspended pending prosecution) and your license surrendered. The arraigning Judge has the right to grant you a hardship license so that you can drive to and from your place employment. This application should be prepared by your attorney. After yourappearance, your attorney will refer you to a Certified Alcohol/Substance Abuse counselor to be evaluated. The counselor will determine if you have a problem with alcohol or drugs and determine whether you need counseling. This evaluation could cost as much as $250.00. Assuming that this arrest was an isolated incident, and you do not have a substance abuse problem your attorney will be in a position to negotiate a “plea bargain” with the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office pursuant to D.A. Fitzpatrick’s long-standing and effective “Stop DWI” Program. You may be offered the possibility of pleading Guilty to “Driving While Ability Impaired” a serious traffic violation but specifically not a “crime” in the State of New York.
You will then appear again in Court and enter a plea of guilty for the reduced charge of Driving While Ability Impaired. If your attorney has been able to negotiate a plea to the reduced charge, you can expect to be sentenced as follows: 1. A oneyear conditional discharge requiring you to stay out of all criminal trouble for that period. 2.Pay a fine in the amount of $500.00 (and a surcharge of $260.00) 3. Attend the NYS Drinking Driver Program, which will take seven weeks at a cost of $225.00. 4. Attend the Onondaga County Victim Impact Panel at a cost of $25.00. 5. Your Driver’s License will be suspended for a minimum of 90 days. (You will be eligible for a Post-Conviction Conditional License at a cost of $75.00). The NYS Department of Motor Vehicles will assess you the amount of $750.00 to be paid in three separate payments of $250.00 if you choose. Your auto insurance premiums will also be increased. Obviously, the time the expenses and the embarrassment related to this non-criminal conviction are a very significant deterrent to making this simple yet criminal error in judgment. Please consider using a designated driver this Holiday Season. If this is impossible do not drink and drive. If you do drink and drive to limit your consumption of alcohol. Even a .05 or .07 blood-alcohol content is against the law. There are many things a lawyer can tell you about your rights in these kinds of cases, and you can fight the charges and go to trial if necessary, but the best defense to DWI charges is simple. Don’t do it. Have a happy and Safe Holiday. Jeffrey Lee Drimer, Esq. 315-472-4331

IN FINANCE
Let’s Talk About IRA’s
T
here is a lot of confusion about IRAs, or Individual Retirement Accounts. I think much of this is because investing has a “lingo” all of its own, and often retirement account titles are used interchangeably. It is a good idea to review and discuss various types of accounts periodically to ensure that we are taking full advantage of the many ways available to us to save for retirement. Individual Retirement Accounts are established, as the name suggests, by individuals. They are separate and distinct from any employer-sponsored plans that we may or may not be participating in. You may set one up at your bank or credit union, through your financial advisor, or you may be a “do-it-yourself ” person who prefers to set up an online account directly with an investment company. Whichever way you choose to go, it is important to have an understanding about the rules and regulations regarding these accounts. Depending upon your income (either individual or household if filing jointly) you may be entitled to participate in an IRA fully, or with some limitations as to the amount you are allowed to contribute. Those people over age 50 have an opportunity to make “catch up” contributions as well, increasing the amount they are allowed to contribute. The IRS publishes
By: Mary Ann Pierce, CLU these income limits annually, and they are different for a Traditional IRA than they are for a Roth IRA. Eligible contributions to a Traditional IRA may be either fully or partially tax deductible; again, this is determined by your income.
tions” or RMDs which we are required to begin by age 70 ½ for most of our retirement accounts. A Traditional IRA will require you to begin these RMDs by age 70 ½; a Roth IRA does not mandate a Required Minimum Distribution.
Your Traditional (or a Roth) IRA may be invested in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or other investments. Some people will have CD’s or cash in their IRAs. Regardless of how this money is invested; growth of these funds is not taxed while in the account. You may have heard of the accounts referred to as “tax-deferred.” You will be taxed on distributions from a Traditional IRA, and you should know that penalties may apply if you take a distribution before age 59 ½, which is often referred to as an “early or premature distribution.”
Any individual earning W-2 income (again, within certain limits) may contribute to a Traditional or a Roth IRA. A working spouse may also make a contribution to the IRA of a non-working spouse. This allows both individuals to save for retirement, as well as potentially providing a current tax benefit.
A Roth IRA is another important retirement saving vehicle. Unlike a Traditional IRA, a Roth IRA is funded with “after-tax” dollars – money that you have already paid taxes on. While in the Roth IRA, the growth of the assets for the account is not taxed. And also unlike a Traditional IRA, distributions from a Roth IRA when taken after age 59 ½ are not taxed (this includes the growth on the account!). Another important consideration when deciding whether a Roth or a Traditional IRA is the better choice for your concerns “Required Minimum Distribu-
Keeping all of these eligibility limits and requirements in mind, and keeping track of the changes to them as they occur may feel like a daunting task. That is why I always stress the importance of regular conversations with your Financial “team” to determine which type of account would benefit you most in your strategy to save for retirement income. Get Organized for Overnight Holiday Guests By: Deb Cabral
H
aving overnight guests during the holiday season is wonderful, but can be stressful at the same time if you don’t plan ahead. More people, more stuff- how do you keep it all organized? Here are some helpful tips to keep chaos at bay and make your guest feel welcome! Create a welcoming space for your guest to sleep. If possible, clear out space in the dresser and/or closet so guests have a place to unpack. A portable clothing rack (they even have racks that are collapsible for easy storage) or a behind the door clothing rack are perfect solutions is you don’t have the time to declutter your closet! Don’t forget under the bed. Use clear storage bins with wheels and empty contents of drawers into the bins. This will free up drawer space for guests, and the items will still be easy to access when needed. Remember extra sheets, pillows and blankets and put a night light in the room as well. A basket with bottled water, tissues, reading material, a mini sewing kit, granola bars, nuts and candies makes a perfect welcome gift. Keep extra toiletries on hand & prepare the restroom Organize your restroom so guests feel comfortable. Using a small basket, have extra toiletries on hand and easily accessible. Meet Linda Ortela
Beautiful Colors By: Audrey Levinson Have you ever been stressed out to the point where you just want to jump up and down like a child and scream into a pillow? Well, I have a better idea. Try coloring. It’s been the latest craze in stress reducers for a couple of years, and finally it’s for adults. Now there is no more hiding your secret passion to color behind your kids. You can find coloring books anywhere, even in the cashier’s line of the grocery store. It’s completely relaxing like just letting your mind move through thoughts at the same rate of speed that the clouds move through the sky. It can lead to all kinds of peaceful day dreaming if done right. Let me introduce November’s “artist.” Her name is Linda Ortela. She is from Baldwinsville and provides a very important and wonderful service to as many people as she can reach. Recently, I ran into her at an event I was attending and decided to write about the other side of art, the therapeutic side. Linda has created a coloring book for adults that is geared to be peaceful, happy, and easy to color. It has pictures to color that most adults can relate to. They are simple peaceful parts of nature like birds, flowers, trees, etc. The opposite of stress. Linda has an extensive back-

ground in counseling and rehabilitating people who have been displaced workers, at- risk teenagers, and inmates in prison. Those are some very stressed-out people who have been in need of a way to turn after such difficulties in their own lives. Now, I’m not saying that coloring would be an answer to any of those situations, but Linda found after her own difficulties at a time in her life that she needed something to calm and soothe her mind. She began imagining flashes from nature, things that just made her happy and at peace. Who doesn’t love the beautiful Lily that sits upon its pad in a pond or lake’s edge, for example? These images of nature can conjure up some feelings that are quite pleasant to most, like the way the warm sun feels on a gorgeous day. She started sketching some of these ideas and showing them to her husband, an architect, writer, artist, photographer. He could draw the pages that she wanted to color. Linda has since published a coloring book called “Color Your Heart Out.” It’s a culmination of her (and his) many images to soothe the mind. She states, “I desire to use my experience in guiding all people to flourish in discovery of his or her life Path and use creative arts expression as a therapeutic healing opportunity.” She also told me she wanted people to connect with their inner child again, like
the child who used to lie on her stomach on the floor with a box of 64 and a coloring book. A world when it’s grown-up responsibilities just didn’t exist. Linda’s latest endeavor is called “Playshops” (not workshops). She instructs people in color theory using a color wheel and lays out the coloring supplies and her book. She has them coloring their heart out. One of the interesting things that Linda experimented with was putting seniors from Parkrose Estates (assisted living) together in a playshop with at-risk teenagers. Each senior was paired with a teenager to color with, but both participants of the pair were to color only half of the sheet. Then they would exchange and finish each other’s coloring page. What a great way to blend the generations! It’s therapies like these that can really create a bond between people and just for a little while calm one’s nerves. Lastly, I asked Linda where she wants to go next with her book and “Playshops.” Her response was, Viral! Linda can create Playshops for any group that is willing to enjoy the benefits of coloring. Check out the website coloryourheartout. com and let yourself relax in this crazy world. Just color!
IN ART Barbara Guzick and Eileen Perrotto taking classes with Linda. A way to relax and release stress. Pictures created by Linda’s husband.

Black is always classy, and even more fun if you add a pop of color in your shoes. Red lips are delicious (Mac, Ruby Woo), blue hues are in (I like them; I just can’t), or if you’re a bit shy for all that color, nude lips are here to stay.
To Get that Holiday Glow
Bronzer gives a glamorous glow!!! You don’t need a lot, but you do need a good bronzer brush, Soho, TJ Maxx, $4. Take a stroll through Sephora and one of the makeup artists can help you pick just the right color for YOU, especially if you’re knocking out a couple holiday parties. Bronzer is glowy and yummy and addicting. NO, you won’t look orange. And YES, people will stare at you because you’ll look amazing. For everyday bronzer, I use NYC Sun ‘n’ Bronze, $6, or Wet ‘n’ Wild, Ticket to Brazil, $5, both at Target.
Lancome’s CILS Booster XL Vitamin Infused-Mascara Primer
I love this stuff !!!! It’s just so fabulous. CILS Booster conditions your eyelashes, adding length and thickness (for real) before applying mascara. I started using this in August, and I’m still using the same tube. It lasts a long time! Now I can’t wear mascara without it, or I feel naked. Only con is that it’s a bit pricey at $25 (Macy’s), but you’re worth it.
Face Moisturizer
The winter air and the heat in your home suck moisture out of your face. To maintain a fresh dewy look all winter long, drink water and invest in a quality moisturizer right for your skin type. If you want to splurge, try Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar, $44, Clinique’s Moisture Surge Intense, $39, both at Sephora. You might also like Aveeno’s Clear Complexion Daily Moisturizer or Neutrogena’s Oil Free Moisturizer, each about $10 at your local drugstore. They’re all yummy.
Face Primer
Please. You must. Really. Do it. Face primer is an essential step for applying flawless foundation. Primer creates an even base for you to apply your foundation makeup, and it helps your makeup stay on all day. Know if your skin is oily or dry so you can be sure to get the right primer. Try Almay Smart Shade, $8, Target; Mac Prep and Prime $23 (Mac counter); Smashbox Photo Finish $16 at Macy’s. .
Biotin Changed My Life
In 2014, I noticed my hair and nails started breaking and thinning. My doctor recommended I start taking one biotin daily. Almost immediately, I noticed an improvement, and I’ve been taking a biotin daily ever since, now my sister does, my girlfriends do. My hair and nails grow longer, stronger and quicker (that means shaving more often ladies). Biotin improves the protein keratin that makes up your hair, skin and nails. Biotin can be found naturally in eggs, avocado, cauliflower, berries, fish, legumes and mushrooms. I buy Target’s biotin plus keratin for under $10 (comes in 5,000 or 10,000 mcg’s). Life is a red carpet. Stay beautiful and we’ll see you next month!
Samaritan Center a Godsend Feeding our hungry CNY neighbors and supplying hope
A
By: Kristen Penfield
nywhere from 120 to 300 is the average guest count for a meal at the Samaritan Center. To date, they have served 89,948 meals. It takes much work and effort to accomplish this every single day. Their mission – an interfaith effort of community members who are committed to serving the hungry and those in need in Central New York in order to promote their welfare, dignity and self-sufficiency. Not only do they feed the hungry. They help those who have encountered hardships rise above and return to society.
The Samaritan Center informs us that one in six Americans faces hunger. Due to limited resources, some families have to choose between food, rent, utilities, etc. The Samaritan Center found that their guests’ demographics reflect the national picture:
When I met with Julie Gilbert, Case Manager and Resource & Referral Specialist for the Samaritan Center, I instantly felt welcomed, warm and hopeful. This, I thought, must be exactly how all CNY neighbors feel upon entering for a much-needed meal. 365 days a year, people are welcomed without any questions, and are able to find a hot meal, an ear to listen, and advice to help. All surrounded by such stunningly beautiful stained-glass at St. John the Evangelist Church on State Street. As I admired the location, volunteers and employees were busy preparing for the next meal.
•68% have their high school diploma or GED –40% have gone on to pursue higher education.
Gilbert said, “The Samaritan Center began in 1981 when a local soup kitchen closed its doors. A number of churches worked together to feed the homeless at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. It has since developed and grown tremendously and helps those in need – regardless of faith. Since 2015, we have been in our new, larger location on State Street in Syracuse.” “Generally speaking,” said Gilbert, “We have people who may be encountering a hardship or crisis, disabled, using food stamps, substance abuse issues, mental health issues, single income families. It doesn’t matter. We welcome everyone, men, women and children who have in common their humanity, their poverty and their sincere gratitude for a place of safety and warmth and a nutritious meal. Our guests feel loved and cared for here during a critical time.” Gilbert added, “Recently, we had a past regular guest stop in just to say hello. For four months, we did not see her. She was on the upswing and introduced us to her son who was returned to her. That’s what we love to see.”

•About 31% of people eating with us are currently homeless or living at a shelter.
•About 15% of our guests are part of a household with children.
•At least 14% of our guests are seniors. •13% of those who eat with us have no income at all, and a total of 52% have resources that total less than $500 in a month. Those were rather shocking numbers to see. The Samaritan Center expresses the same values today as it did thirty-four year ago. It exists as a definition of humanity, kindness, dignity, self-respect, generosity and desire to help those less fortunate. “We work as a team here, to equip our visitors with what they need to get on the right path. We don’t do this alone. We lean on the professional support of different agencies in our area such as Aides Community Resource Center, Drug Prevention Center, Women’s Centers, Easter Seal, Soldier On, as well as National Grid, a volunteer lawyer, and others. We work together to make the best decisions in using the donated dollar wisely and responsibly. It makes me proud” Gilbert added. Gilbert said, “We have a very peaceful atmosphere here. Problems are rare because we have high expectations for our guests, and they rise to meet them. We supply a tapestry of services and resources. Together we support and strengthen family, history and symbolism.” Gilbert added, “The Samaritan Center is unlike any other. Every

Dining Area one here is more like family; people genuinely love one another, and it’s a blessing to be a part of it.” The team - Executive Director, Mary Beth Frey, Development Director, Karen Belgrader, Assistant Operations Manager, Brenda Mims, Support Services Coordinator, Emily Prill, and Office Manager, Maryanne Grady work alongside countless volunteers, help feed those who are hungry and get them on their way to a steadier and certain lifestyle. Gilbert began her career with the Samaritan Center after college in her home town, Philadelphia. Gilbert provides guests with information, linkages and support they need to create positive change for themselves. “I started with a career,” Gilbert said, “but now they can’t get me out with a crowbar. It’s not a job. It’s about identity and community. I truly love what I do here.” But I already knew that… not only by her warm welcome or calming smile; it was evident upon arrival at the Samaritan Center and their team of supporters. Of course, The Samaritan Center is always looking for help and/or donations. They rely on funds received during their large events such as, The Soup Bowl Golf Tournament, Raise the Plate Good Samaritan Dinner, One Bowl At -A -Time, and campaigning, but can only be as successful as their monies allow. All dollar counts. Donations can be made by calling their office at 315.472.0650 x 205. Or, by mail: Attn: Mary Beth Frey, Samaritan Center, 215 North State Street, Syracuse, NY 13203. Flying high and taking the Airport to new levels. By: Abigail Adams Photograpy: Luciano - Mary McCandless hirty-seven emails later and I finally got her. A phone call was the best we could both do for the time allotted. Christina Callahan is a busy woman; meetings, appointments, flights, etc. I went through two other people before I even got to speak with Ms. Callahan. Her voice was sweet with a spice of understandable frantic. She apologized for having a crazy schedule, and we jumped right into the conversation. After about fifteen minutes, she had to take an important call, and we decided we would resume via email to avoid any more interruptions. Christina Callahan is the Executive Director at the Syracuse Hancock International Airport. The airport provides service to 16 major markets with 2 million passengers. Callahan has been working here since 1997 and just celebrated her 19th anniversary back in August. Starting in an entry-level position, she then got promoted to Public Information Officer in 2007, which was her dream job; “To talk about the airport and tell people about all the things that we’re doing and translate what it was we were doing for the people who use the airport.” In 2011, she was appointed Interim Commissioner of Aviation. She took on the position of Executive Director

Syracuse Hancock International Airport at night in 2014, saying, “This has been one of the most rewarding careers that I think anybody could ever have. I get to work with so many amazing people.” Callahan tells me never in her wildest dreams did she think she would be the person who runs the airport. She relishes in the learning process that comes along with the job saying, “I have the opportunity to meet airport managers and leaders from other airports and learn from them and their experiences.” What do people not see under the surface of airports? “Airports do more than just provide air transportation. Under the surface, there is a “city within a city” that employs hundreds of people who are responsible for ensuring that every facet of the airport operation, from keeping the runways and taxiways properly maintained, to screening passengers and bags, keeping the terminal clean, maintaining a 400,000 sq. foot facility to ensure it runs like clockwork. The airport is an important part of our local economy, generating hundreds of jobs and providing safe, reliable air transportation for people and cargo. We are also a part of the community, and want to be viewed as such. Events like this years’ air show brought tens of thousands of people to the airport. Aviation enthusiasts of all ages were able to see some of the most amazing aircraft. We have this amazing event space located in the center lobby. We want to host more community events; work with not-for-profits and hopefully, people will see the airport not only as a place where a trip begins and ends, but also as a great event space.”

As a female, in your position of power, what has it been like? “I don’t like to think of myself of being in a position of power, because I am only as good as the people I work with and have surrounded myself with the smartest, talented, most dedicated group of people. I am part of a team that has been given an awesome responsibility to keep our airport safe, secure and to provide passengers with a positive experience. I believe in collaboration and taking in all perspectives and ideas. I have never been someone who thinks they are always right or knows everything. I think we should always be open to learning, understanding, and appreciating other people’s opinions and perspectives.” What does a day in the life look like for you/what does it consist of ? “My day always starts off with coffee! I check my go to news websites, my email, look at my calendar to see what is on the agenda for the day. But, no matter how much I plan, there is always the unexpected, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I guess that is one of the things I love most about this job.” What is your favorite part of your job? “I love interacting with people, travelers, visitors, employees. I love sharing the airport’s story – everything we have accomplished, the challenges we face. I love meeting airport directors from across the country – exchanging ideas, learning from their experiences. If
What’s some professional advice you would give out to other women?
there is one thing certain, I can say about people in the aviation industry that is this – they are always willing to help, listen, and offer their advice, share their stories. At the end of the day, we all face the same challenges.” What is your day to day/long-term goal? “Right now, now my goal is to focus on our mission, which is to provide safe, secure, efficient and low cost air transportation to the 12-county region the airport serves. We are focused on stimulating air service, economic development, tourism and trade with the goal of providing more service to more destinations, and providing passengers and all airport users with a great traveling experience. I am also focused on ways we can improve airport security while maintaining excellent customer service. I do not believe that the two are mutually exclusive and in fact, I think it is necessary and something we have to make a priority. I hope, by the time your readers see this, that Governor Cuomo has selected our airport as one of five recipients of a $40 million Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Grant. If we are successful and are selected, it would definitely be a game changer. We have so many great ideas. We have such great plans for the airport and want people to be proud of this amazing facility. Beyond that, the sky is the limit!”
“I would give women the same advice I have given my daughter – know that you can do anything, be anything, if you work hard and set your mind to it. I never thought I would be the person who manages an airport. But, I worked hard. I took a few chances, never compromised my integrity, and always gave, and continue to give my all. Not every day is easy, and I have definitely faced my share of challenges, but I had a choice – I could give in, give up or be strong, and if nothing else, be a role model for my daughter and step-daughters. I have so many role models around me who have inspired me – Mayor Miner, to whom I owe so much for taking a chance on me, having faith in my abilities, and giving me the opportunity of a lifetime. She holds her team to the highest of standards, but holds herself to standards that are even higher, and inspires me. County Executive Mahoney – another role model who has been an inspiration to me. Both of these women give so much to their community, and I am privileged to have worked for and with them both.” Not only is Christina an accomplished 45-year-old woman, wife, mother, and leader in aviation, but she remains involved in a support system for women leaders across the nation. She lends her time and voice to a group called Executive Women In Aviation. This is a “nonprofit organization that encourages the advancement of women in all aviation career fields and interests.” Organized back in 1990, the WIA now has more than 12,000 active members, including aviation professionals, students, and enthusiasts. Women and men from all segments within the industry, including general, corporate and commercial aviation, education, govern

ment and the military, are eligible for a WAI membership. “The title speaks for itself,” Callahan says. “We see each other when we can, at conferences, meetings, and events. But we communicate with each other all the time. ” This group allows all women in aviation to reach out to one another with questions, concerns, ideas, or just to have a shoulder to lean on. “It’s such an amazing group. I feel privileged to actually be a part of it.” Christina’s journey to the position she holds now is a grand example of what hard work looks like. Working your way up to a career that allows you the platform, to create a safe and friendly environment for people everywhere is a vast responsibility. Callahan continues to work hard in the aviation profession and remains passionate about the teamwork that is accomplished at the Syracuse Hancock International Airport. Discover the Airport exhibit. The exhibit first opened in 1996 and has been visited by countless school groups, community organizations, travelers and guests. Visitors can interact with actual aircraft landing gear, a baggage tug, and a “marshaller” display where they can learn and practice the signaling techniques used by those responsible for assisting the aircraft with safe takeoffs and landings. Interactive displays depict the four forces of flight; historical graphics and corresponding text detailing the history of aviation, both locally and nationally, and the history of the airport. courtesy:syrairport.org

ne thing I know for sure is that people usually don’t know what something is until they know what it is not. We’re really good at picking out the negative, and we use that as our baseline to gain orientation for where to go next. When buying a house people tend to have this thought process “I hate brushing my car off in the winter so I really want a garage.” When I ask people to set goals in therapy or identify what they would want for their lives they give me a whole list of what they don’t want anymore. It’s amazing how it happens like that, every time, with everyone.
down a little first before they grow. It’s no wonder we tend to go through a hurtful or more negative journey before arriving at the desire, dream, or definition of something. Our bodies are literally conditioned to go in this order. Hurt and then heal. So what does this mean for love?
When I ask “what is love?” people go through this same process. They tell stories of heartache and loss. It seems to be difficult to seek love when we’re conditioned to travel through something else, something painful, first. Even though we’re taught that love is the answer to all things we still go to this darker place first. It’s a natural process. I once heard Jane Fonda talking about her days as a fitness guru, and sat in awe of just how much she knew about fitness. She explained in a much more scientific way than I can but in essence, when a person lifts weights it puts strain on the muscles and actually creates tiny microscopic tears in the fibers. After a couple of days the body heals these tears, and in doing so the muscle is a little stronger in that spot, a little thicker, and this is what builds our muscles. It’s a process of breaking them
Hurt and loss are unavoidable, but if we allow time and nature to take over it can bring us to our end goal, and we’ll see our hearts swell with love. Let all that we do come from that knowledge that strength and love always come along in time. Not just despite the hurt, but because of it. Heading out of a tumultuous election season which has left our country deeply fractured, and heading into a holiday season which always is accompanied with challenge, it’s important to remember that with this hurt comes a tremendous opportunity to show love. The hurt our country feels is real. We can continue to break apart or we can allow time to scar over the hurt and build a stronger foundation of love. It’s easy to get caught up in that hurt, and try to create hurt on the other side; instead of taking that time to heal ourselves. Neither side will effectively move forward while we’re both so torn. If you’re hurt by the current political climate dive into the issues you care about and love. Give your all to them in a loving and strong way.
In areas of love we actively seek to avoid pain and loss, and yet there is no other way to arrive at our destination without walking the feared and forbidden hurt path. If we stick with what Jane Fonda has taught, we remember that the break is what causes the build.
Remember the build only comes after we allow it to scar over. A seed breaks wide open in order to sprout roots and grow. Total destruction of the seed takes place, and the earth around it is disrupted, all with the promise of growth.

s the year winds down and the celebrating comes to end we need to look to the New Year and what’s ahead. It is a time to re-evaluate what we are spending, and what we currently have in place. When it comes to your insurances, you should look at your policies and question what coverage’s you have. Is there enough coverage on your home, your contents, garage or sheds? More importantly, did you purchase new item’s jewelry, paintings, new furniture? Did you put in energy-efficient items or upgrade your home? Install a security system? These things may play into what you are paying for your insurance. It is equally important that you have enough coverage should you suffer a loss. All of the wonderful gifts that you received need to be protected too. On that cold blustery day when you want to stay inside, pull out your policy and take a look at what is covered and the amount of coverage you currently have. You can also grab your camera and take photos of the items of value around your home.
Now that you have checked your homeowners or renter’s policy, what about your auto? Do you need to have roadside service, rental coverage? For pennies, you can have this coverage and never have to worry about break downs or rentals if you have an accident. It might be snowing, but you might need an umbrella. Umbrella policies give you the extra protection you may need. If you are a homeowner and have a car, a boat other assets covered by insurance, ask about an umbrella policy. You have dealt with enough stress throughout the year and now is the time to start the year off stress free. At GEICO our goal is to help you with all of your insurance needs. We have a 97% customer satisfaction because you matter! Did you know that we have been helping customers since 1936, so we have tons of experience with licensed agents 24/7? Want to know how much you can save? Now is a great time to call or stop by our local office and find out. We have a local office at 2735 Erie Blvd. E. with over eight agents to take care of you, or just give us a call at 315479-2886. Have a Safe and Happy New Year!

Break with Tradition!
T
he holidays are upon us and every year we tend to do the same thing, go to grandma’s house, host a party, wrap last minute gifts. The list goes on and on. Many of us look forward to it, and many dread the same rituals. So, why not break tradition by mixing it up and having fun. Making the best of holidays and doing good is a great way to kick off the New Year to come. Here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing. Gather your family and friends to make it all happen.
C
anning season is over, and you can still pick up Mason Jars. Try decorating them with a picture of a favorite memory, fill with candy, nuts and dried fruit, or any of your favorites treat. Tie a ribbon around it and give a gift someone will enjoy. The jars are also great for decoration – just add a string of battery operated lights, and use as a centerpiece of place a few above your fireplace.
P
ick up some Clear plastic bulbs and get the family to decorate and personalize their very own bulb. It is a great addition for your tree, and everyone will have fun.
H
ow about throwback tree string? String popcorn or cranberries and decorate the tree. It is also perfect for pulling out old photos are reminiscing.

G
o to your Home Depot or Lowes, they usually have cuts of wood that you can buy. Pick up some drawer knobs, paint the wood with some chalk paint and create a beautiful coat hanger.
M
any of us also bring desserts to dinner, so create personalized pies. Pick up some five-inch foils, and make a pie of each. Yummy Apple, Cherry and pumpkin will surely make them feel special.
N
ow, the best for last, if you really want to do something special, gather your friends, family and bring gifts to seniors at the hospital. Many seniors are in hospitals and are waiting for a bed in area nursing homes. Many are alone, lonely and would welcome a visit. There are very reasonable and meaningful gifts that you can find for them. Here are some ideas: Throw blankets- it gets cold, and they are warm. You can find them for under $5. Pick up some lightly scented mists, powders and lotion. Socks, shaving cream, that sweater from last year that is still sitting in the gift box. A tin of butter cookies, fresh fruit, the list goes on and on. Be sure to check with the area hospitals to make sure that you can visit. They will also tell you what some folks need. Isn’t that what it is all about?
This year, make someone else’s day special. I guarantee you will feel as if you received the best gift ever. Happy Holidays!

Take me to the Mall -
Great Northern Mall!
Y
ears will come to an end, but we always tend to look back beyond the previous year at times when things were much simpler. A get together with friends, and family was the area mall. This was a place where you ran into everyone and made a day of it, all on one level. Today, many of our area malls are gone and just a memory in time. Have we forgotten the fun we had there? The right amount of stores to buy everything we needed? Are our lives that complex that we need fifty different stores to purchase one item? The world we now live in is so fast paced we forget to stop and smell the roses, so to speak. If you travel along state route 31 in Clay, you will see one of the malls that sit down off the road, almost forgotten. That’s right almost! The Great Northern Mall is still great. Why? Because in spite of the bigger malls that now exist, this mall has stayed with the course. It is a mix of our own local businesses mixed in with larger retailers. Here, you can stroll through the mall and find everything you need under one roof. If you are looking for the local feel and products, they offer, you will be able to find and have made custom candles, beautiful gently new and used clothing at Fancy Cat and Wear It Again Kids, just to name a few.
The mall offers a sense of calm, a place where you can shop on your terms. If you cringe trying to find a parking space only to realize there was nothing you liked at the other malls, do yourself a favor and rediscover the Great Northern mall. Now that the holidays are upon us, you can find something for everyone on your holiday list. It is a way to get back to basics, something we all need to do. Let’s avoid the crowds and bring our friends and family together for a day of simple shopping pleasure. Rediscover what is inside. See you there.

Unbreakable A
By: Jennifer Nastasi-Guzelak
t first glance, Michelle Rapp looks like you and I. She talks just like you and I. She has a job just like you and I. She goes about her day just like you and I. However, when you take a closer look, you can tell that there’s something different about her.
Soon thereafter, Michelle met and married Dan Rapp. Michelle says, “Thank God.” Dan has been the rainbow at the end of her storm. For years, it had been her mother who was there by her side who always helped. Unfortunately, she passed away on December 18, 2012.
Michelle was born with a neurological disorder, and though she has been through extensive testing, still has no diagnosis. Believe it or not, Michelle is happy that she doesn’t have a diagnosis. There are no labels holding her back. Regardless of the symptoms she has, she chooses to carry on with her life.
The stress of losing her mother was just too much for Michelle to handle. After many nights of going without the sleep her body needed, she knew something had to change. So, Michelle drastically cut her hours at work and began to focus on herself.
Michelle’s equilibrium has always been a presenting issue. From time to time, she falls and even on occasion gets hurt, but she always gets back up and continues on. You see. Michelle is legally blind. This can be misinterpreted or confusing to people. She does have a vision; she can see you and I, but it’s just not that great. She started losing her sight in her early twenties when her optic nerve began to deteriorate. It got to a point where it started to create a lot of inconveniences in her life. Losing her independence wasn’t an easy pill to swallow.
On May 21, 2016, Michelle and Dan joined Champions Fitness Center and decided to work with a trainer. Michelle has been able do things that she didn’t think were possible. She also has a new-found strength and confidence beyond what she could have ever imagined. Michelle says, “If you’re someone who might be facing a disability or other adversity try not to be too discouraged or afraid. You never know what new roads this experience might take you down. Try to face the adversity with your head held high and eyes wide open.”
Michelle Rapp
In her thirties, Michelle decided to have extensive tests done to see if she could find a diagnosis. More importantly, she wanted to know if there would be a genetic link for her future children. With still no diagnosis, there was some good news. She was told that there was a less than one-percent chance that her children would have the same symptoms.
Michelle says that this is no tragedy, this is her being triumphant! She is grateful for every blessing and bump in the road. “There is no greater disability in society, than the inability to see a person as more.” Robert M. Hensel For more information on our services, stop by Champions Fitness or contact us at 315-452-5522.

Memories live on at the Holiday Table By: Christine Vickers The holidays can so often be bittersweet. The mad rush to get everything done, to pick that perfect gift, decorate the house, prepare for company and the list goes on and on. While celebrating the joy of being with family and friends and the optimism of a New Year dawning, there is also the incredible sadness of missing those who are no longer physically present at our table. For my family and others, food brings comfort and familiarity. In my Italian family, there are special recipes that we(I use that term loosely!) recreate every year. By sharing this food and time together we continue to honor the memories of our beloved members who have gone on to enjoy celestial holidays. The following dishes are some that we love to have each Christmas Eve as we celebrate the Feast of the Seven Fishes. Each selection has its own story and evokes different memories for all of us. What kind of memories are embedded within your celebrations this December? Writing these recipes down allows you to hold onto pieces of your family history… forever. Deepest thanks to my mother, Catherine Ranieri, for taking the time to record ours.
Stuffed Artichokes
Ingredients: 4 large artichokes 1 cup seasoned breadcrumbs Salt and pepper to taste 2 small potatoes cubed (optional) 1 clove of garlic finely chopped 1 cup Pecorino –Romano cheese grated ½ cup Prosciutto chopped fine ½ cup olive oil 2 lemons sliced Wash and trim spiny tips of artichokes. Also cut off any tough outer leaves. Place artichokes in a bowl of cold water while you prepare the stuffing. Mix the breadcrumbs, cheese, Prosciutto with salt and pepper. Remove artichokes and pat dry. Spread leaves of artichokes open and fill each leaf with a teaspoon of mixture. Fill saucepan with 1 ½ inches of water. Place artichokes standing up. Add potatoes, garlic and lemon slices. Drizzle olive oil over the tops of artichokes. Cover and bring to boil and simmer for approximately 45 minutes until tender. *A Sicilian & Calabrese treat, I grew up enjoying these at every holiday, family dinner and summer picnic. I also had one twenty years ago on a ferry boat ride across the Straits of Messina into Sicily. I never saw them featured in menus until in the last 10 years or so they popped up in restaurants all over. They are most often shaped as a ball and called Arancini, meaning “Little Oranges” in Italian. We followed this recipe and my grandmother, Rose Ranieri, always referred to them as Rice Sticks. Other variations have peas and/or ground meat in the center.
Rice Sticks
Ingredients 1lb box River Box- Only this brand will do, because you need a sticky rice. 3/43 cup grated Parmesan/Romano cheese ¼ cup seasoned bread crumbs ½ teas garlic powder ¼ cup chopped fresh Italian parsley ½-3/4 cup softened butter 2 medium eggs 1 cup seasoned bread crumbs –to roll croquettes Vegetable Oil for frying (not olive oil) Preparation Cook the entire box of rice according to package directions. When cooked, run the rice under cold water, then drain thoroughly, until all the water is gone. Mix the rice together with all the ingredients. Add1/4 teas. Salt and ¼ teas pepper. Form into croquette shapes (oval). Roll in seasoned bread crumbs. Place croquettes in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 hours to set and solidify. Fry in deep sauce pan filled with vegetable oil—about 1 ½ to 2 inches. Do not crowd the rice stick in the pan-just place a few at a time. When evenly browned, drain the sticks on paper towels. Place in oven to keep warm until ready to use.
