CARING AT A HIGHER LEVEL MEANS PERFORMING AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. St. Joseph’s is the only hospital in Syracuse and Central NY rated high performing in ALL NINE procedures measured by U.S. News & World Report. Proof that a higher level of care leads to the highest level of performance.

DON’T RELIVE YOUR YOUTH, IMPROVE ON IT.

7 Ways To Warm Your Heart This Winter By: Molly Lizzio, LMFT VOLUNTEER This is listed first because it’s the most obvious and also most effective. Volunteering can be like going to the gym; you know it’s something you should be doing, but always find excuses why you don’t have the time. However, each time you actually get off your butt and go you feel great afterwards and so thankful you did it. Volunteering is one of the best medicines we have. Volunteering will help you get out of your own head, which is full of your own problems and fears, and it’s a tool that provides perspective and insight. How easy it is to forget that it feels so good to help others. CALL AN OLD FRIEND This one seems obvious, but it’s strange how we rarely actually do it. You’ve just made it through the holiday season, and think of all the people who sent Christmas cards- how many of them have you had dinner with recently? When was the last time you thought of one of them and actually picked up the phone and sent them a text instead of just saying, “I should call or message them soon.” Think about the genuine friends in your life, the ones you know you can reach out to after months or years have passed, and it’s like no time at all. Give that person a call and let them know you miss them, and you care about them. As soon as you get talking you’ll remember how comfortable and easy it is, and wonder how on earth you survived without them in your daily life lately. LEARN A NEW SKILL Part of what makes us cold and stuck is staying stagnant in our same-old routine. Go out and learn sign language, or take a sushi making class. Something you’ve always been curious about but never had the time to do. When you set things as a priority, you’ll be amazed at how much time you can find for it. Learning will simulate you in new ways and give you different and invigorated purpose. HOST It doesn’t matter if it’s a big party or an intimate gathering, but surround yourself with people you love. Share with them your home, your famous recipes, your favorite restaurant, or your best board games; think out of the box and be a leader among your friends and family. Allow organizing fun be actual fun instead of stress; that’s hosting done right. If a super bowl party with

6 wouny.com • January | February 2017

all your friends seems like it too much, then invite your favorite ladies out for a valentine’s day lunch to honor love in a new and inclusive way. It’s nice to be the one to bring others together and make connections. EVOLVE YOUR LOOK This one might seem superficial, but I’m a firm believer that when you look good on the outside, you can feel better on the inside. Sometimes when we’re in a ready bad spot the thing we need most is a hot shower and to get back into a routine. It’s amazing how taking time to blow-dry your hair can make you feel like you’re taking care of yourself. And in addition things like painting your nails can be a highly effective coping skill. Maybe your New Years resolution helped you lose a little weight or after a holiday season of shopping for others, you decide to give yourself a treat, but pick up a new sweater and try something out that maybe you wouldn’t usually buy for yourself, but have always liked. It doesn’t have to be a designer or even brand new- maybe just new to you. You could double down on your feel-good energy by donating your old clothes to the Salvation Army. Extra warm fuzzy points! MAKE TIME TO READ We all get caught up in our to-do lists and forget to take time to slow down and allow the simple pleasures in life. Reading will bring you out of your own world for a moment and into the land of your choosing. If you have a long commute try putting an audio book on and see how it can change your day. Join a book club, you could merge this with some of the other things on the list like calling an old friend who you remember loves to read, and hosting a book club meeting at your house. All the warm fuzzies. ADVOCATE Whether it’s a cause close to your heart, or you’ve been affected by the recent surge of activism, fight on. Make your voice heard. You can speak on behalf of millions, or just one. The truth is almost anything is possible with the right circumstances, and you can help to create those circumstances for yourself and for others. This can be on a big scale like being involved in a worthy cause, writing to your local and state representative to address important issues, or advocating for a loved ones health or education. Stand up for those who stand alone, or who cannot stand at all, and I promise you will walk away feeling like a winner too.

By: Beth Phillips,RPAC nother year older, another year wiser! Many people feel that the new year is a good time to start fresh. Resolutions are made, and we reflect on years past. Time keeps marching on. Despite everything we do to keep ourselves looking youthful, eventually the natural aging process wins out. While there are so many non-surgical options that are available to aid in maintaining our youthful appearance, sometimes surgery is the best option for improvement.

ing on the extent of the procedure to be performed, patients may require anesthesia ranging from general anesthesia to local anesthesia. In most facelifts, an incision is made extending from the hairline above the ear running down along the front of the ear and sometimes into the ear and continuing behind the ear into the hairline. The skin is then lifted, and the underlying tissue is repositioned and recontoured. The skin is redraped over the “lifted” tissue. Sutures are

At the office where I work, Botox, facial fillers, laser treatments and chemical peels are among a few of the most common procedures performed to slow the visible signs of aging. Patients come in frequently stating that they are not ready to do anything surgical “yet.” But Mother Nature is a tough competitor, and eventually she catches up with us. The benefit of going to a plastic surgeon for your maintenance procedures, is that by the time you are ready to take the bigger step and consider a surgical procedure such as a facelift, you hopefully have a good relationship with your provider and have made the decision together. A facelift, also called a rhytidectomy, continues to be one of the top 5 cosmetic surgical procedures performed. There are several different variations of facelifts. A full facelift is often considered to be a mid and lower face lift along with a forehead or brow lift and eyelid surgery. The most conventional facelifts concentrate on the mid and lower face and include the neck. A mini facelift is less invasive and is most beneficial to patients who have only early signs of aging. Sagging skin, jowls, fatty deposits and deep creases in the face and neck can all be addressed. Facelifts can be performed in a hospital, surgery center or office setting. Depend-

placed to close the incision. If the muscles in the neck have been “tightened,” there is an additional small incision on the underside of the chin. Non-absorbable stitches are removed approximately one week later. Sometimes a drain is placed for a day or two. Bruising and swelling may occur and varies from person to person. Pain is managed with oral pain medications. Most patients can drive within the first week and can return to work in 1-2 weeks. Risks include bleeding, infection, anesthesia risks, poor wound healing, facial nerve injury, and changes in skin sensation. Patients frequently ask how long a facelift will last. The answer is that it is variable based on a patient’s own genetics and lifestyle. Most people seem to feel that they gain about 10 years of improvement. The addition of patients own fat to replenish fat that has atrophied over the years can be accomplished by a procedure called

structural fat grafting. Fat is extracted from other areas, usually the hips or abdomen using liposuction. The fat is placed in deep tissue pockets, and a portion of the fat remains permanently in the face. Many surgeons feel that this has dramatically advanced the improvement that can be made during facelifts. Working in a plastic surgery office, I hear all kinds of discussions about aging. The decision to have surgical improvements is very personal. I recently had a patient explain that when she was self-conscious about her aging face, she felt as if she was always trying to camouflage it. She felt as if she was not herself. She went on to say that by eliminating the problem, she could now be herself and stop thinking about it. She likened it to being similar to having a blemish on your face or having a bad hair day. She now feels more confident in her appearance. Growing old gracefully has a different meaning to different people. To some, it means accepting the outward signs of aging as they appear. To others, it means softening the outward signs to match the inner vibrance. When considering any cosmetic procedure, be sure that you are seeing a professional that is trained and credentialed in that procedure. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons suggests that you seek out a board-certified plastic surgeon. Physicians boarded in facial plastics or otolaryngology would also be appropriate. Don’t be confused by other official sounding boards or certifications. The American Board of Medical Specialties states that there is no certifying board with “cosmetic surgery” in its name. By: Jeffrey Lee Drimer, Esq. o most people, the thought of filing a bankruptcy petition is problematic. It isn’t what we were taught by our parents; it’s not what we believe in. However, if life teaches us anything, it is to expect the unexpected. Most of us are just one illness, accident at work, plant closing or marital disruption from serious financial pressure. Repossessions, law suits, judgments, liens and foreclosures are real and significant problems. Wage garnishments are disasters when every dime you make pays for the rent and food and clothing that keep your family going. Sometimes all of us need to “Start Over.” The concept of filing bankruptcy is as old as Scripture itself. . . Deuteronomy 15:1-2 (ESV) says, “At the end of every seven years, you shall grant a release. And this is the manner of the release every creditor shall release what he has lent to his neighbor” Once you have come to grips with the imagined stigma of filing “a Bankruptcy Petition” and accepted the reality of the effects your debts have on your life you should seek out and discuss your financial condition with an experienced Bankruptcy Attorney. Filing may not be your only alternative, or you might not be eligible, or you might lose assets in the proceeding that you would rather keep. So good legal advice at the outset is crucial. Once you are committed to the process you will have to weigh the advantages of filing against the disadvantages. It is certain that your credit will be affected; you will lose the use of your credit cards; getting a home mortgage in the future

might be more difficult, and you might have to give up some of your property. On the positive side, some or all of your debt can be discharged (eliminated). Most people lose no property in a Bankruptcy due to both Federal and State property exemptions. Your Credit Rating will recover and in a surprisingly short time, you will be able to get credit cards, car loans and a home mortgage. Collection efforts against you will stop. You should be aware that a Bankruptcy filer has a choice of the kind of Bankruptcy they file. The first choice is a Chapter 7. This Petition is filed when your regular monthly payments are more than your available net income, and you have an income less than Federal guidelines. The second choice is a Chapter 13 which is a preferable choice if you have mortgage problems, tax problems, have assets you don’t want to lose or income in excess of the guidelines. In a Chapter 13, you may repay a percentage of your debt in order to address those problems over a three-fiveyear time period. After you have chosen the Chapter under which you will file, you have prepared your Petition and attended the Pre-Filing Bankruptcy Education Class your petition will be filed with the Court and an Index number assigned to your case. The effect of this filing is immediate, powerful and effective. A part of the law known as the “Automatic Stay” goes into effect and all collection efforts against you are immediately terminated (including income executions) until a further Order of the Bankruptcy Court and generally only in the cases of foreclosures. The relief

10 wouny.com • January | February 2017

this “Stay” provides is a game changer for people with credit problems. After the Petition is filed a Trustee (a local attorney) is appointed to administer any property that the Bankruptcy Estate may acquire to pay creditors. The Trustee will thereafter conduct a hearing at which creditors can question you and issues arising from your Petition can be discussed. In general this hearing, known as the 341 meeting occurs approximately 30 days from filing and takes less than 10 minutes. A debtor who has a well-prepared petition that has been truthful and open in its preparation has nothing to be anxious about at the 341 meeting. After the 341 meeting, you will be required to attend a Bankruptcy Education Course. After the time for Creditors to object to your petition expires (very rare) you will be granted a Discharge in Bankruptcy effectively eliminating all the debts listed in your Petition. Child support, income taxes from the last three years, student loans and restitution in criminal cases are not included. (The Bankruptcy education courses are attended on-line and only take two hours at a minimal expense). Among all the laws that affect our lives, few are designed or implemented as effectively as the Bankruptcy Code. It truly supplies a viable alternative to people in trouble and a chance to “Start Over.” It is something to think about when things seem impossible. Remember, there are laws and people who can and will help you. For more information you may contact me at (315) 472-4331

IN ART

Maria Rizzo

wouny.com • January | February 2017

If you want to become a zillionaire artist superstar good luck in the process! I think I’ll go through a different direction. I am a creative entrepreneur who will keep building up her business along with a future career as a professor. I will keep creating art to show in galleries and shops, work on art commissions for clients, and I won’t be consumed by the scarce chance of making it into the art world. I am grateful that I can create art, sell art, and that I have a balanced work/life. Maria Rizzo

By: Audrey Levinson

I

sat down with Maria Rizzo at Nature Tyme on Erie Blvd. I was curious about where she was from and how she came to reside in Syracuse, NY. She told me that she moved from Bologna, Italy with her brothers and sister to Syracuse where her mother was originally from. The adjustment from Italy to Syracuse was tremendous for her. There was a language barrier because she only spoke Italian. This made things difficult in school here, and things looked so different. She really struggled. What does an artist do when they are even the slightest bit uncomfortable? You probably guessed it. They create more art to escape the rest of the world and transport to a world only of their own. Maria was always drawing, since the day she could pick up a pencil (of course, not always out of frustration and strife). I asked her when she knew she would become an artist. She told me that the light bulb went on one day when she was 9. Her teacher told her that if she devoted as much time to her homework as she did to art, she would be an A+ student. Her aha moment at age 9 that she’d better keep on drawing. Maria Rizzo has a muse. Her muse is in the trees, literally. She has painted trees from all over, especially from Onondaga County. Maria has found so much natural beauty in CNY. She said when she looks

at a tree it’s character is soulful and strong as well. Some of the trees are thousands of years old. If they could only speak to tell us what they have seen! Maria calls herself a surreal landscape artist. She paints her trees, so they always look important. They are the star no matter what else is going on in her paintings. She has the technique of the old masters when she paints and the imagination of an expressive mind. Those two elements together work to create a style that is elegant and mystical.

ty in Syracuse and surrounding areas. She received the grant and began preparation for people to sign up and help paint a “symbolic tree.” The event fluctuated between our various libraries. She instructed volunteers three at a time, giving them a painting lesson and directing which part of the painting they would paint. She loved working with the volunteers at the different libraries. The tree was finished and all in all, she had reached out to 45 random members from the community.

Maria has some strong ideas about what being an artist means. She came across a book titled How to survive and prosper as an artist without selling your soul by Caroll Michels. This became her bible. She read all about the business side of art. It changed her whole way of thinking about who she is as an artist.

That was just the first part of her plan. The next part was to advertise for people within the area to send her a picture of their favorite tree. She received two-hundred and fifty pictures from all over CNY. She could only pick eight pictures for her to create eight different paintings from out of the two hundred and fifty she received. I am sure there were many fantastic and intriguing photographs that she had to weed out as she chose. The show and the idea were a total success. Another group that Maria went to was the WISE center. This group helps people with their businesses in many different ways from starting one to feeling good about what you are doing. Maria gives back by moderating a roundtable a few nights out of the month. Currently, she is the Artist in Residence and curator of the gallery inside of Nature Tyme and The Tech garden downtown Syracuse.

Maria’s entrepreneurial spirit has led her to areas that have been very beneficial to her and the community. She puts her art out there, and the reasoning is not narcissistic but more to create a clientele that loves and supports what she does because it makes them happy. She loves CNY because she has found that there are agencies and groups that will help someone who wants to start their own creative business. In 2014, Maria wrote a grant to CNY Arts for a project involving the communi-

Attracting Community and Reaching Goals By Kristen Penfield mily Brockway. She is, Mary Poppins. She is, a must-see. Brockway, a native of Clemson, South Carolina (now residing in New York City), says Syracuse Stage has helped her reach new goals, and she is helping Syracuse Stage reach new goals; together, it’s a win. Syracuse Stage is honored to present Ms. Brockway. Her striking beauty, stunning stature and a personality to match, her talent is noticed as soon as Mary Poppins is spotted on stage. Born and raised in coastal Carolina, musical theatre and singing were her top interests…and she knew that since the age of four. “My parents, Kim and Ronnie Brockway, brought me on a Disney trip shortly before we adopted my brother. We were in the audience of a “Barbie and Ken” stage production, and I was chosen by the actors to come up on stage and help them entertain the audience. From then on, I was captivated with theatre and acting,” said Brockway. Immediately after the trip, Brockway began dancing classes and community theatre. A singing coach assisted her for many years and still does today. “There is a picture of me from that day [in Disney] on stage as a little girl. That picture goes everywhere I go. It’s a special moment that I keep close to me,” added Brockway. Brockway has been in many productions, Mary Poppins being her biggest (lead) role yet. Brockway said, “When I began my career after college, I moved to New York City with my agent. I was immediately cast in the Disney Cruise Lines. Needless to say,

my parents really enjoyed watching my shows on a cruise ship.” She is extremely close to her parents. Being so far away from them definitely has its moments, but Brockway says the actors with whom she travels, and those in Syracuse and other cities become like family. “We are with each other for 3-4 months at-a-time. We become close; the comradery is strong, and we keep each other upbeat and motivated when we are tired. It’s extremely hard work, but the balance is incredible. I absolutely love what I do,” said Brockway. Brockway boasts regional credits that include: Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady (Opera North); Camelot (Westchester Broadway Theatre); Mary Poppins (Mary), Into the Woods (Potsdam Music Theatre); Brigadoon, Cats (Cortland Repertory Theatre); Hairspray, Man of La Mancha, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Theatre By The Sea): Guys and Dolls, Hamlet (New Harmony Theatre); Boing Boing, Proof, Bigfoot and Other Lost Souls (Atlantic Stage); The Who’s Tommy (Short North Stage); and principal singer aboard Disney Cruise Line. All of this is merely the beginning. Know her face. Know her name. You will see it often. Of this, we are certain. Brockway said, “I am lucky to work with such talent as the students from Syracuse University Department of Drama. They are amazing. I learn from major actors in a large ensemble as well as from students who might play smaller roles. I am always learning.” Brockway knows that people who attend the theatre expect great shows. She is certain to live up to their expectations.

22 wouny.com • January | February 2017

“To be in this field, one must be extremely dedicated. It’s a lot of work, especially once acts are combined. Everything culminates, and characters are seen. So many minute details must be perfect such as spacing, lighting, sound balance, orchestra, technical strength, choreography, back stage costume changes (usually one-minute allotment), harness check and much, much more,” said Brockway. What is not unusual is enduring twelve-hour days consecutively, and only completing Act I. To note (because I didn’t know this), Syracuse Stage hires an outside company, ZFX Flying Effects to ensure that the theatrical flying is safe and secure. Phew. There are always two operators, taps on the shoulder when all is clear and training to pull-off such grace and beauty. Brockway said, “I really like Syracuse. I don’t have much free time, but I have managed to squeeze in Pastabilities, as well as a couple of other restaurants that were absolutely fantastic.” Brockway also bragged about the young talent in Mary Poppins. Jane who is played by Sofia Benderski. She is 12 years old and a seventh-grader at Onondaga Hill Middle School, and Rueby Holsopple, who plays Michael. They too, are not to be missed. “A production such as this can only be accomplished as a team,” said Brockway. “Mary Poppins does not happen without that. And when it’s all said and done and operating smoothly, each curtain rise is simply magnificent,” she added. Syracuse Stage offers eight shows a week, giving the actors Monday to rest. Matinee’s and evening shows are offered.

Acting lessons are fantastic, as well as watching the old classic musicals such as Shirley Temple, The King and I, South Pacific – that’s what I so loved to do! As I got older, I studied with accomplished Metropolitan Opera singers and still do. It is a continuation from my studies in college. There is always room for growth.” Her travels have included Indiana, Florida, New York, Ohio, Connecticut, and Carolina’s to name a few. Brockway’s parents now retired, are usually following their Emily, watching her show and of course, bursting with pride.

Jaclyn Hales

Finding Her Stride:

“I’m More Grateful Now Than Ever”

Jaclyn on set of Extinct

I think there’s a power behind the actual act of making a bold choice towards the dream, and somehow it tends to manifest something, some sort of path that will lead you to the next step,” says Jaclyn Hales. Dramatic and sensitive from a young age, Hales says she was meant to be an actress. Maybe it was a result of her being the middle child or something naturally built inside her, but for whatever reason, Hales was drawn into the drama. She was the type of kid who ran away just to see who missed her. Once she discovered theatre at five, cast as shrunken Alice in her New Hampshire town’s production of Alice in Wonderland, Hales was hooked. Acting was like having an “Alice in Wonderland” experience: every time Hales stepped into a new character she stepped into a new world. It was fascinating, getting the chance to take over a character’s body and develop her, from the way she walked to how she talked. She wasn’t Jaclyn Hales anymore, but someone completely different. Having the ability to fully take on new personas has propelled her throughout her career, and she credits that for helping her act alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood,

such as Star Trek’s Patrick Stewart in the film, Christmas Eve.. “You get star struck when you first see them, and then as soon as they open their mouths and start talking to you, they’re absolutely normal,” says Hales. “When we’re acting together and I step into my character, he is no longer Patrick Stewart or whoever else I’m acting off of. They’re now whoever they are. We’re now just two kids playing make believe.” Hales always knew she wanted to be an actress, but it took some time before she was able to fully accept acting as her career choice. After moving to Utah, she earned her first television spot on The WB’s Everwood,, and that exposed her to a whole new form of acting outside of theater, putting new meaning to the addictiveness of acting. From there, she got an agent and started auditioning whenever she could, but booking roles was some grueling work. When it came time for Hales to go to college, she tried to be more realistic about her career options, switching between a marine biologist and a publicist. Neither of those choices ever felt quite right, so she finally let those thoughts of acting resurface and

became a performing arts major. “It’s funny how when you finally make the right choice for you, and make a choice that makes you happy, suddenly everything starts going your way when the whole time you were afraid everything wouldn’t,” says Hales. Through her classes and with the support of mentors like her teacher Chris Clark, who helped Hales with her auditioning skills and putting on a performance without acting off anyone, she could hone her craft. And when it came time to graduate, she received one of the best graduations presents she could have asked for, her first feature film and leading role in Unicorn City. In the 2012 film Hales plays Marsha, a nerdy and socially awkward girl enlisted by her unemployed gamer friend to help him create a utopian society to impress a potential employer. Hales says out of all the characters she has played, Marsha is the one that has stuck with her the most. She was allowed to just have fun with her, to tap into her middle school days and connect with old feelings of awkwardness and insecurity. It was also the role that gave her the confidence to make the move to Los Angeles, where the streets are supposedly made of gold, and dreams are

“It’s funny how when you

never too far away. “I don’t think I would have been as successful having moved to LA without any credits under my belt, because it’s a difficult town in the sense that you need credits to get cast, and you need to get cast to get credits,” explains Hales. “I kind of just got myself started in a smaller town. Starting in a small pond, becoming a bigger fish and then went out into the ocean.”

With creative platforms like Instagram and YouTube, the whole concept of the artist and/or celebrity has transformed. It’s more about what you can produce on your own to get noticed, and in a city filled with around four million people, that can be quite a

ful. The actress reveals there’s a special kind equation for the auditioning and casting process: Physically looks the part of the character + Chemistry with actors already cast + Your own talent = The role. At the end of the day, there’re just a lot more people getting into acting and there’re only so many roles to go after. But it’s that handful of roles Hales books that make the headshots, the memorizing lines, the awkwardness of auditioning, and the pressure all worth it because those roles were meant to be.

The game isn’t over when you book the gig though, because when you walk on set it’s a whole new Jaclyn on set of Extinct Getting to and being comenvironment with its own fortable in LA has been set of rules. As an actress, it’s quite the journey for Hales. She has been daunting task. Hales job to navigate it, and there for six years but is now only starting to how she handles that space “It really is like trying to win feel like she’s fully putting herself out there, Windsor Court Hotel has a lot to do with how she the lottery,” admits Hales. “But and people are starting to notice. Photo Shoot, Prolabs performs when the cameras when it comes to creating your finally turn on. Hales says Moving to Hollywood to build on an acting own stuff, if you’re putting out she has a different experience on each new career definitely wasn’t like the movies: girl quality work, and you’re putting out someset she works on, but the key for her is to walks down street, girl gets spotted by agent; thing you’re passionate about; people will remain in a place of positivity and creativity agent turns the girl into a superstar. It was a notice. They’ll appreciate that you actually process that often required Hales to juggle care enough about it to put in the work every while on the job. multiple jobs while auditioning whenever day.” “I’ve found that as long as I remain in a place she had a chance. She quickly realized in of creation, where I’m truly tapping into my For Hales, it’s hard to imagine another job order to become a successful actress, she creative side and having fun, then I’m doing would need to take control of her own career where a person fails so many times before it correctly,” says Hales. “But if I’m on set and succeeding. Since arriving in LA, she estiand make things happen, because no one focused on the negative, then I start moving mates she’s been on maybe 1,000 auditions, was going to take her under their wing, into producer mode where I’m now just pro and out of all those has only booked a handor not in the way, she had always thought.

“It’s got a lot of action and a lot of mystery. It’s been super fun. It’s the first series that I’ve worked on consistently as a regular every single episode,” says Hales. “That’s been a real learning experience because

ducing art instead of creating art. There’s a big difference. One feels inspired, and the other feels like you’re just delivering the product, and that’s it.” The process can be stressful, but it’s beautiful. Hales likes to think of it as one massive mural that will take a lifetime to paint, but she has to keep dipping her paintbrush until it’s done. Sometimes the challenge is remaining confident and unruffled when things around her tell her it’s time to crumble. For Hales, that may happen when she has already secured the role and is on set, but can’t help beating herself up over a scene that didn’t go too well or when she’s going through a dry spell and hasn’t booked an audition. When she has those moments, all she has to do to snap out of it is to think about working a job she hates instead of going after the dream. And there’s nothing better than the dream. “Nothing else is going to really satisfy me. I don’t think I have a choice. I have to try and fail, or try and succeed. Either way, it’s better than the alternative,” says Hales. As an actress, Hales has experienced her fair share of failure, but she feels she is finally reaping the rewards from all her hard work. Without having gone through the struggle of getting cast and earning credits, Hales doesn’t know if she’d be as grateful as she is now. She feels that appreciativeness every time she walks onto the set of her new show Extinct. The sci-fi series shot in Utah takes place 400 years in the future after humans have gone completely extinct because of an alien invasion, and now another alien race is trying to bring humans back.

28 wouny.com • January | February 2017

I get to develop a character over such a long period of time. So often you get hired for a day or hired for a month, but rarely do you get to commit to something for six months.” The series is set to premiere on BYUtv in March and should then make its way to Netflix where Hales has a feeling it’ll blow up in a good way, of course. One of the best things about shooting in Utah for Hales is that she gets to be so close to her family. She can just jump into her car and be there in a few hours. But when she talks about Utah, besides her family, there isn’t the same tenderness in her voice as there is when she talks about Upstate New York. Hales was born in Syracuse and moved to New Hampshire when she was five, but Upstate is still home. Her dad has a family cabin in Castleton, New York and that’s where she spent most of her summers growing up. It’s where she learned to swim and went to get Martha’s Ice Cream. “That’s the only consistent home I’ve ever really had, because it’s the one home I’ve been to every year of my life,” said Hales. It also seems like her home has always been on the stage or behind the camera, bringing life to someone else. That’s home, and that’s her piece of happiness. “All of us here on this planet, we’re just trying to seek a sense of happiness or completeness or connection,” says Hales. “If your dream is acting or painting or building cars or whatever it is, and that is going to insight this feeling inside of you that nothing else does, then I would imagine that’s the only way you can go about your life. Even if you are kind of starving as you do it. Just do it.”

Healthy Hearts By: Mary McCandless

W

e as women handle stress in different ways, and we tend to put others needs above our own. We are the bearer of many things and in doing so we internalize it, never really noticing the effects. However, this stress can take its toll on your health, and your heart health too. There are many other factors that also come into play. Heredity, overall health, Fats, foods, exercise and even sleep can all come into play. That is a lot to think about. I come from a family of heart disease, so I wanted to learn the steps to prevent a heart attack. I learned that plaque can build-up in your arteries from the foods that you eat. I took a look at what those foods were, and surprisingly found that I already avoided the majority of them, but there are times when you just crave certain things, so moderation is really important if you cannot totally avoid them. Thankfully, there are lists available on many websites that detail the good and bad fats (saturated and Trans Fats) with saturated fats being the main cause of plaque build up. Those fats are hotdogs, sausage, whole milk and high-fat cheese. Cholesterol is another culprit, which is also found in cheese, eggs and liver. Women show different signs of

a heart attack than men, so we need to be even more aware of what we do to stay healthy. According to cardiosmart.org “more than 200,000 women die each year from heart attacks, which is five times as many as women as breast cancer.” Those are pretty scary numbers and something we as women should take a hard look at. Other contributors are smoking, diabetes, alcohol, and high-blood pressure just to name a few. I was a bit overwhelmed as I paged through different online sites. The variables are detailed and because each of us is different, we should learn about what we can do to prevent heart disease, look into family history and change our habits. Your doctor may also order a stress test too! According to womensheart.org below are some tips to maintaining a healthy heart. 1.Cardiovascular Health – regular aerobics – as little as 30 minutes a day of moderately vigorous aerobic activity, such as walking, cycling, or swimming significantly reduces a person’s risk of heart disease. 2. Manage your Stress – we all have it. You may not prevent it, but you can control

how you react to it. Meditation, Yoga, stretching, and finding ways to channel the stress in healthy ways and not internalizing it. It is also a great way to keep your blood pressure down. I make it a point to have quiet time to relax and not think of the things that have annoyed me. Take a deep breath, relax and think of things that make you happy. 3. Food with cholesterol and saturated fats read labels learn more about what foods to limit or avoid. 4.Cholesterol High levels have been linked to heart disease; family history, t smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, physical inactivity, overweight by 20 pounds and more. February is Heart Health Awareness month and a perfect time to take a look at your overall health. The best defense is a good offense. Do your heart a favor and check out the warning signs along with the preventative steps you can take to keep your heart healthy. How Secure

are You?

I

dentity. Dictionary.com describes it in many ways, and a few of them are; The condition of being oneself or itself, and not another. The state or fact of being the same as described and finally the exact likeness in nature or qualities.

How do you identify yourself ? It is not something that we think about very often. When you meet someone for the first time they do not ask how you identify yourself ? We simply assume that who we are, best describes us and there is no need to put it out on the table since it will show through in time. However, it is something we need to protect especially in our high-tech world. We, without thinking click on websites and give our information freely to capture more information that we are in need of. How often have you visited a website and the immediately ask for your email? There are many out there, and there are also the scammers that are looking forward to capturing whatever they can tap into your identity! Below are steps that you can take to help secure your information: 1. It is a good idea to get a shredder. Documents that you think to have no value to you may be valuable to the identity thief. Shed it all! 2. Make secure passwords for your computer or other devices. Do not use the same password or ones that are easily identifiable. 3. Use antivirus protection and do not give out personal informa tion on unsecured websites. 4. Clean out your wallet and purse regularly. Put receipts in secure files. 5. Make it a habit to review transactions on bank statements and credit card statements.

6. Check your credit reports for any new and unauthorized cards or accounts that have been added under your name. 7. If you discover any unauthorized charges or new accounts, report them right away. These are just a few steps that you can take. Identity theft is more common than we think, and every two seconds, there is a new ID theft. What is even more disconcerting is that over $18 billion has been stolen due to it, and 16% of consumers with breached social Security numbers become victims? There is also another great way to protect yourself and that is with an Identity Theft Protection policy. At GEICO, you have full time protection through Prevention, Detection and Resolution. If you become a victim, they have dedicated resolution specialists who will work on your behalf and handle the administrative tasks to help you resolve the crime. Their team will monitor your credit activity with all three-Credit reporting agencies for suspicious activity or changes to your file. Additionally, you will also have Phishblock warnings, Identity monitoring, Wallet Protection, Protection while traveling and more. Why would you want to put your identity at risk when you can protect yourself for as low as $7.99 a month? GEICO wants to make sure everything you have is protected. If you would like more information, stop by your local GEICO office located at 2735 Erie Boulevard E, or call them at 315-4792886. Did you know that they have eight agents there to take care of all of your needs? Start your year off right. Happy New Year!

10 Things to get rid of TODAY!

H

By: Deborah Cabral, The DeClutter Coach

appy New Year! The new year is a great time to declutter! Life is busy, and we don’t always take the time to rid our homes of energy-draining clutter. My best advice is to live with only what you need to be happy and get rid of the rest.

Here’s a list of 10 things you can get rid of today. Remember getting rid of things doesn’t necessarily mean they need to be thrown away. Items can be given away, donated, consigned or sold. Sometimes knowing that someone else can use or enjoy an item might make it easy to give up. 1-Product boxes. Please, get rid of the boxes from TVs, cell phones, kids’ toys, etc. This is something we see often when working with our clients. As they say in Disney’s movie Frozen - “Let it go!” 2- Wire hangers from the dry cleaners. If they are in good shape, return them to your dry cleaner, so they can be reused. Recycling is a great way to rid your home of clutter. 3- Extra cups and mugs. Two to three per family member are enough. How many do you have? 4- Socks with no mate or with holes. Either use them as rags or let them go. If the mate has not turned up in a week, chances are it never will. 5-Bills, taxes and paperwork over 7 years old. Paper clutter breeds paper clutter. Take the time to go through all of your paper and get rid of items you do not need. Shred confidential papers to protect against identity theft. 6- Outdated over the counter drugs and vitamins. Check your medicine cabinet. Most people have at least a few expired items they didn’t know were there.

most spices is 1-3 years. Yikes! How many do you need to get rid of ? 8- Books you have never read and never will. We all have them. Donate them to your local library, so they can be enjoyed by others. 9- Jewelry you don’t wear. Jewelry is perfect for giving away or consigning. One person’s trash is another’s treasure. 10- Crummy old bath towels. You know the ones I am referring to! Try to tackle this list over the next few weeks. Remember, less is more! If you feel overwhelmed, start small- a few minutes a day and build from there. Keep in mind, small changes over time yield big results. Good Luck and happy decluttering! Ahhh, cheers to New Year and another chance to get it right! Getting it right means taking care of you! Every year, I make a resolution not to make a resolution and instead use January to assess what IS and IS NOT working in my life, so I can devise a better plan where needed. January is also a perfect time to toss out your old habits along with your old makeup, catch up on sleep and have fun trying new products. But first, that dry winter skin needs to go! Bye Felicia!

Exfoliate

Ever see someone and wonder how their skin looks so good? Lots of water and regular exfoliation will make your skin say ‘ahhhhhh thank you’! About four years ago I started exfoliating twice a week and love the way my skin looks and feels. Exfoliate in the shower and be sure to pamper your skin with moisturizer when you’re done. There are many exfoliation products on the market, but the St. Ives products get great reviews and are right at your local Target or drug store. You can pick up some great options for about $5.99 at TJ Maxx or Marshalls. Finding the right brush is a little harder but the Sephora Collection Dry Revive Dry Body Brush for $14 works well. The bristles are a little strong so it’s perfect for serious ‘exfoliationists’. The ergonomic handling makes it easy to hold, but on the negative, there’s no extender to get to your back. It’s still worth it.

Those brows

Hollywood brows. They. Are. The. Thing. So, if you’re looking for a unique product, Gimme Brow gets a 4.4 out of five stars out of more than 2,600 reviews on www.sephora.com. Gotta try it. It’s a little pricey but it really does the trick and is small enough (size of a lipstick) to fit in your bag. Gimme Brow have fibers that add a touch of volume to your brow, keep them in place and looking very natural. While some women can really trace a designer brow, I’m not that talented. You can find Gimme Brow at Sephora, Keep in mind even the lightest shade of blonde isn’t that light so be conservative. Try it before you buy it in Sephora. It’ll set you back about $24 but for me is worth it. It’s effortless.

Foundation

Working on camera for 20 years, finding the right foundation is always a hit or miss. Just when you find a good one, something new and better comes out, or your skin changes like a Kardashian hair color. Mac foundation products are really dependable, and once you’re hooked. It’s hard to want to give them up. Macs come out with a new(er) foundation called Matchmaster which is flawlessly divine. I use the 1.5 or 2.0 color shade. The coverage goes on oh so smooth, a medium coverage with a demi-matte finish. Always apply moisturizer or primer before applying with a makeup brush, dab a little translucent powder over your foundation, and you are good all day. Studio Fix Fluid is another yummy option. Mac’s foundation costs about $38 a bottle, but with a good makeup brush, will last you 4-6 weeks.

From creamy to matte with one swipe!

I never knew this existed, but I am glad I discovered this little gem. Smashbox’s InstaMatte Transformer turns your creamy lips into a matte finish with just a swipe. It feels a little like Vaseline when you first but it on but seconds later, viola! , Enjoy your matte finish. It’s a great option if you’re leaving work and heading out at night and want a dramatic matte finish but don’t want to double lip dip or change your lipstick color. It costs about $24 at Sephora, and the tube lasts a long time as you won’t want to use it every day. This is going to be your year! Now dust the past off and get started! See you next month!

posture problems and back and neck pain. Foot levelers makes softer foot orthotics that is specially designed for your specific needs. The leveler accommodates more than fourteen planes of foot dysfunction. Our computer measures how much an arch as fallen and compares the right to the left and views both feet from several angles. We put all of it together and show you how much you need or do not need the support. Here is a diagram of how most people stand: Which one are you? Do you realize that you are unable to use your body’s natural energy with poor posture? This energy is known as Chi, and few people realize that poor posture brings about loss of Chi. It will also cause neck pain, back pain, along with painful feet. We use three different kinds of lasers, including deep tissue laser therapy, Erchonia and Terraquant, which are cold lasers. Among the many conditions we have treated with laser are frozen shoulders, herniated or bulging discs, arthritis, sprains and strains, sciatica, carpal tunnel, knee pain and chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain, plantar fascitis, and myofascitis. Our Mattydale office has lasers, digital x-ray, galvanic current, and foot detox. Nutritional counseling, using Standard Process, Nutriwest, and Marco Pharma, are among others.

We give very personalized care at the office, and patients are generally scheduled twenty minutes apart. And we especially reach out to teenagers and young adults with posture difficulties. Did you know that as much as we tell them to stand up straight, we see them slumping in a chair or slumping while standing? This really is not simply the habit of poor posture as we have been led to believe. It is, generally, a pelvic tilt problem that makes it difficult for them to stand or sit erect. We can now influence and correct most of these problems. Our techniques include; S.O.T., Atlas Orthagonal, Universal Cranial-Pelvic, which includes postural analysis. We have been in practice since 1982, having graduated from SUNY at Binghamton and Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1982. For more information, contact Dr. Laska at 315-455-2333

That’s Out There: Erin Miller Takes The Advertising World By Storm

By: Molly Congdon This past May, Erin Miller graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in Advertising for Emerging Businesses. “I chose advertising because it was a combination of art, business, and psychology,” Miller says. “I also think that advertising has shaped culture in a lot of good and bad ways, so I wanted to learn how people respond to media when people are trying to communicate a message to a large group of people. I wanted to learn the skills that Newhouse students get to prepare themselves to enter into an advertising agency and apply those skills to my own venture to help small businesses and startups communicate their story and get it out there.”

in Television, Radio, and Film. It seemed only necessary that we combine our powers to travel around the country to discover business communities in out of the way cities and help them tell their stories using the power of storytelling.” The initial sparks for the business began while she was still in school; Miller made short explainer videos for student businesses around campus. Then she recruited her team. “We did a lot of portfolio-building while we were in college,” Miller says. “We charged extremely low prices, so we could create a reel of projects that we were proud of, and that we could show future clients.”

After obtaining her diploma, she embarked on an entrepreneurial journey running a “nomadic media accelerator,” Out There Productions.

The big question for them, when looking at their business model, was: How could they continue to keep our prices low and our quality high?

“Out There Productions is a one-stop shop to get awesome ideas out there,” Miller says. “It was co-founded by me, Johnny Rosa, and Losa Amara Meru: two excellent people I met during my time at Syracuse University. Johnny majored in Magazine Journalism, and Losa majored

The end of their undergraduate years was looming in the not so distant future. The real world awaited. “One fateful afternoon, we were sitting in Newhouse eating Chinese takeout, and we looked at each other and asked, ‘What

is it that we LOVE to do?’ Miller says. “I answered, ‘I love to build communities.’ Losa said, ‘I love to tell stories.’ Johnny answered, ‘I love to go on adventures.’ We looked at each other, and we realized we were doing exactly that with Out There Productions.” So it began. “We started an Indiegogo campaign to raise over $9,500 to build our business,” Miller says. “And with this money, we bought a school bus. We came up with this concept called ‘van-trepreneurship,’ which is operating a business out of a van, trailer, or bus. This way, we’d be able to operate on low costs and provide our services at a low price all over the country.” Miller feels the start-ups, and small businesses are full of challenges and excitement; they are trailblazers. “I feel like entrepreneurs are the world’s hustlers and pioneers,” she says. “They’re the folks who have awesome ideas that tell stories about themselves and their strengths, and they want to share it with their community, whether it is a new type of coffee, or a technology app that can change the way we live our day to day lives. Startups

and small businesses are the source of innovation and change. I think that it’s important to challenge ourselves and what we can do, and I think starting something new and running with a great idea is the biggest challenge out there.” Her greatest inspiration is one of her closest relatives. “I have a lot of people that push me forward and really encourage me to keep learning and keep building,” Miller says. “My biggest influence is my older brother, who is a writer, a rapper, and a bookseller at Powell’s in Portland. He and I are of similar lankiness and posture, but he is an unstoppable creative force that inspires me to continue to build for people like him: people that are tornados of ideas and potential who are looking for something to contribute their energy to something constructive and positive for the greater good within a community of people.” Her long-term goal is to “connect creative thinkers worldwide.” Of course, Miller also would love to “take over Ellen Degeneres’ job when she retires and have a talk show called ‘Erin the Generous.”

You say you want a

N

Resolution! By: Mary McCandless

ew Year’s Resolutions are popular for us to atone to our bad habits or the things we want to accomplish. It is a time when we promise ourselves that we will make changes or to become better in some way.

So when did this all begin? Some 4000 years ago ancient Babylonians made promises to the Gods to pay their debts and return borrowed items, and by complying with it, they would receive favor throughout the new year. No one during that time wanted to fall out of favor with the Gods, so it was very important to them to keep them. According to History. com, the ancient Romans practiced similar methods. When Julius Caesar added Janus the two-headed God to the calendar, (thus the name January) January 1st became the first day of the new year. This two-headed God Janus looked back in time and forward into the new year. The Romans made promises to be good because falling out of favor with these Gods would make your life miserable. The concept of resolutions for the new year has carried through time and to the new world. Today our resolutions are usually for ourselves or to promise a friend or loved one to change a behavior or even a life change. As the year comes to an end, we reflect on the past year, evaluating what we have done and how we want to improve. There are tons of resolutions we make; saving money, losing weight, stop smoking, finding a new job, eating healthier, finding ways to relieve stress, staying active, or even a new hobby. These are just some of the resolutions we make. Everyone’s is different.

The question is, will we keep them? For all intense purposes, we want to better the New Year that is upon us and succeed in whatever we choose, but do we need a resolution to do that? Are we setting our expectations of ourselves too high? Have we succeeded in keeping them in previous years? If you are one of the many people who does not keep them, why not try a buddy system? Get with a friend or family member and make a check-list of your resolutions. Have a discussion with each other to see if they are things each of you can accomplish. Next, decide how you will approach reaching your goal. The great thing like a buddy system is that you can check on each other and even set an award system when each of you accomplishes your goals. Include as many friends or family, and you can and make it a new tradition! If you are one of those who want to go for it alone, then set up your very own goal calendar. If you start with your most important goal or resolution, your success will be easier to achieve. It doesn’t hurt to ask for help when you feel stuck or stressed in keeping your goal. Remember, as you accomplish each one, set a new goal. It is a great way to keep yourself in check throughout the year. So now that the new year is here, how are you doing on keeping your promises for 2017? Stay on track because when you made your resolutions you also made a promise to yourself and don’t forget you made a promise to the Gods. So, if you’re falling behind, remember you do not want to anger the Gods.
