K

ids today have more stress than any generation before them. The modern day stress is less about making money to help support the family, although sadly that burden still exists for many of our children, but today’s stress is more geared towards overall perfection.

School is more competitive than ever and extracurricular activities are through the roof.

We discuss with kids “what do you wants to be when you grow up?” And talk to them about working hard in school, read them bed time stories, and ensure their homework is always done, but who among us are sitting down regularly with children discussing feelings like anxiety?

Where Anxiety comes from and how to cope with it? Most of us were raised in a “pick yourself up by your boot straps” mentality, so who can blame any of us if the emotional language around a lot of these topics doesn’t always come freely.

The thing I always try to remember is kids are tiny humans. They feel and experience everything I do. But kids feel things often in a bigger more profound way. An example of this is when a child throws a tantrum in the store: “IT’S NOT FAIR”, and like clockwork their parents will come up with some variety of “life isn’t fair” or “oh well”. Such big concepts for such tiny humans. As adults we understand that concept only after thousands of our own tantrums, and sometimes we still don’t always get it. These kids are having a meltdown because this is a big deal to them.

They haven’t experienced it before.

So if this “kids feel things just like the rest of us” theory pans out what can that mean for anxiety? What does anxiety feel like for you as a grown adult with a lifetime of experience and understanding under your belt? Personally, it can still sometimes feel like there’s an elephant sitting on my chest, so I can only imagine what that severe anxiety experience would be like for a child who doesn’t have any frame of

reference, or any words to give it.

When I discuss anxiety with children I first I describe anxiety as this odd feeling- a worried, nervous kind of feeling.

I usually will give examples of times I’ve felt anxious, kid appropriate of course.

This is helpful because it’s a message that I hope kids get all through this process that anxiety is normal, everyone deals with it, and it’s ok to talk about.

After I’ve identified what anxiety is and am confident they understand the word, I ask them where they feel anxiety in their body. Adults usually think this is a weirder question than kids do. Kids are more attuned to their bodies than adults, but sometimes if I get a puzzled look I may give examples. “Some people feel in here in their bellies (as I pat my stomach) but other people feel it up here in their chest (and a beat my chest a little)”. These are the most common places, but I’ve also heard children talk about feeling anxiety in their hands and feet, neck, etc.

After we talk about where anxiety sits in their body and what it feels like (sometimes it’s sick, sometimes is pounding, or tingles), I start to talk about the ways it might have gotten there. It’s important for kids to understand some of their triggers.

Are they in a certain place when they feel these feeling? Maybe around certain people? Is it a certain time of day?

This is one of the most important steps, because once your kids do both understand when anxiety is triggered the pair of you can start working on it.If anxiety is around school and testing, maybe there’s a certain routine on test mornings, or the child learns a great deep breathing technique to use just before the quiz. If the anxiety is related to social situation, perhaps a worry stone in their pocket is like the presence of safety and security, accessible anytime they need it. If your child worries about the future, guided imagery could be useful to help them feel more in control of possible outcomes.

Luckily there are endless resources online to help navigate this area. There are activities around dispelling anxiety, YouTube videos teaching about belly breathing and other relaxation techniques.No matter what avenue is chosen, remember that what’s important is this it is being talked about and addressed with kids.

School is out, and the threat of the new school year is still far enough off to live in peaceful bliss; so why would anyone want to work on anxiety now?But when the anxiety is low is actually the perfect time to work on and talk about anxiety. People think talking about anxiety will bring it provoke it, but that’s a myth.Practicing getting really good at deep breathing while you’re relaxed and calm will make it seem like second nature when a tough time comes along. When you’re stressed and it’s hard to relax mediation can come easier because you’re more practiced at it.

It’s important to make these practices a part of everyday life and conversation for kids, and summer is honestly a great time to start.

And it’s important to mention, that while you’re teaching the kids these lessons take some notes for yourself. As women we tend to put so much into our children we forget to put the same effort into our own health and wellbeing. Kids feel anxiety and other emotions profoundly yes, but so do we. We just have become accustomed to it.

We pick ourselves up by our boot straps because somewhere someone told us we were supposed to. It’s what’s going to make us strong.Pushing feelings aside and blindly plowing through is one way to handle things, or we can deal with what life throws at us and feel every inch of it, figure it out, understand it, learn from it, cope it with, grow from it. hen it comes to Art I wondered what are people buying these days? In a world full of images thanks to technology, it is so easy to find a beautiful print at any department store to fill wall or table space. They are also fairly inexpensive. Not that I am knocking commercialism, however for those who want to be entertained visually by fine art, there is a huge difference.I have learned when you gaze into a painting or at a sculpture that has been created as an original, there is excitement and energy. I can easily compare

My first inclination, after viewing the display of incredible work was to find out a little about Anne. Anne grew up here in the Syracuse area. She attended Syracuse University obtaining both undergrad and Masters degrees in painting. She gained her curatorial skills working under Mike Barletta, Jacob Roberts, and Mike Swatt.

She has been on the board of THINC, a non for profit art organization that stands for The institution of a Now Culture. She is an artist herself. I asked her what type of artwork does she like? She said that she enjoys art that has a curiousness to it.I agreed wholeheartedly.

Anne was very gracious yet down-to-earth and obviously very knowledgeable in her field. She showed me the current exhibit which included Katya Bratslovsky’s beautiful florals, and Walter Melnikow’s abstract paintings. Jim Ridlon has curiosity shadow boxes and large paintings, and Diana Godfrey’s abstract works, plus more. She also has a very large Marilyn Minter painting, an artist who has gained notoriety in the art world, which will be auctioned off at a later date. I was elated at what I had seen. It was all so very interesting.

In art the creation has a life of it’s own because the artists energy resonates and lingers as long as the creation exists. The last question I asked Anne was about where the art world is today. What, if any are there trends in what is selling? Are those trends reminiscent of other genres throughout history? She stated that “collectors buy works that speak to them personally, are pleasing to their eye, or they are going to hang at home/work because it relates to their business in some way”. She said that “on the global scale, second market works by well known names (the Warhols, the Van Goghs, etc.) has historically been a safe bet for investment purposes. She also feels that the new 3D printing techniques are gaining

traction in contemporary art.There is a global conscience in art as well right now.

The art world has become less “Western-centric”. She has seen that there is great work out there no matter what the media or genre you can find beautiful creations. Another interesting point she brought up is the art critic.She does not see

artists careers being based on what the critic thinks and says as much as it did 20-40 years ago, and artists are not being pitted against each other based on style.This tells me, that what is acceptable as fine art has broadened its edges, another reflection of our times as far as what is acceptable in our societies.

Art has no boundaries,it is the spirit of the human experience. It is so important to recognize this especially in the world we live in.It is not racist, or comes with a barrage of issues.It is, from wherever it comes from around the globe, a reflection of us as just that, the human race.

ou’re in your thirties and you already have the dream career, the doting husband and loyal friend. You basically have everything you ever wanted; life is good.

Now all you need to feel complete is the kids.

But what happens when reality gets in the way of your plans?

Lover’s Game follows the lives of Vincent and Annabella, a wealthy couple living in New York City who discover the unlikelihood of children being a part of their future. As the news of infertility gradually starts to reshape their marriage, Annabella becomes extremely close with a painter who introduces her to a life of seduction and passion that she never considered before. Eventually Annabella’s relationship with Gillian develops into an emotional love affair that forces her to choose between a life of comfort and a life of excitement.

Director/Writer/Producer Danielle Earle presents a fresh new take on the imperfections and vulnerabilities of love during an age where settling down seems almost unavoidable; while simultaneously capturing the beauty of New York City in her debut feature film.

Earle first made headlines with her award winning series, Brooklyn is in Love, which explores the lives of three struggling friends trying to find love in Brooklyn, NY. The series

won her three LA Web Series awards. And after finally making a name for herself, Earle decided it was time to concur another medium of film.

“I wanted to do something that was different, that catered towards the LGBT community out there and had a universal theme to it,” said Earle.

Originally from the Bronx and having lived in a city so central to the arts, Earle always gravitated towards film. She says there’s just something about the city, the scenery, the diversity, the people, that energizes her. And it was that same innocent splendor, along with the passing of her grandmother that inspired the creation of Lover’s Game.

Earle had always wanted to write something fully centered on a love story, but it wasn’t until she reached that very dark time in her life that she came up with the idea for Lover’s Game.

After that, it was like she had no control, the words just flowed from her fingers. It took her only about two days to put the script all together.

When the movie is stripped down to its core, audiences will find at its heart lies the connections people share with one another and the relationships they have with themselves.

Although the plot revolves around three main

characters, Annabella, who’s played by Crawford Collins, is really the focus storyline. Like many women in their thirties, Annabella finds herself going through a period where there’s a tremendous amount of pressure to have children and start a family. But the harder her husband Vincent, who is played by Blaine Pennington, pushes for this conventional lifestyle the more Annabella is inclined to rebel against it. And that curiosity of hers eventually leads to a tumultuous affair with Gillian, who is played by Miranda McCauley.

Danielle said she wanted to show the more emotional side of the female character, authentically portraying the struggles they go through. “I always want to write for strong female characters in film,” said Earle, “and show that aspect because in a lot of films the woman is more the opposite of that.”

Since Annabella is such a tough leading lady her character required an equally strong actress, and Earle confidently called upon Collins to do the role justice.

When asked what attracted her most to the script Collins said she was drawn to her character’s progression throughout the film; how Annabella’s character dilemma drives her to make a 180-degree turn and decide what path she wants to choose.

“I really liked how these two women that sort of come together are polar opposites, but they find something within each other that sort of clicks,” said Collins. “And I really liked the idea of this woman coming from this conservative, pressed background and sort of then making this change that allows her to find out more about herself through Gillian.”

Actress Nadia Serantes who played the character of Elle said it was Earle’s solid, good writing that made her want to be a part of the film. When first reading the script, she felt as though she was watching the film.

“The visuals come to you very easily and that’s what I liked about it,” said Serantes. “I couldn’t stop reading the script. I needed to know how the movie ended, and that’s something I really enjoy about it.”

Very similar to how Earle was in a dark place when she wrote Lover ’s Game, the film required many if not all the cast members to search for their inner demons. When getting into character Crawford said it helped to channel her inner feelings about her character’s secrets. Serantes agreed, saying as an actress your training requires you to know your instrument which is your body, your feelings, your voice and you can’t be afraid to utilize it.

“As an actress I know where my dark places are—we all have them—and I know where to go. I had to access those dark places for this character, which was painful, but this character

is suffering,” said Serantes.

While it was emotionally challenging and draining to portray these characters, especially when having to maintain certain emotions for multiple takes, both Collins and Serantes said it was a joy to be a part of the film. They were happy to get the opportunity to work with Earle again, whom they had fostered a good relationship with from working with her previously on the set of Brooklyn is in Love.

Collins best described Earle as a creative type without all the drama. “She has a really nice disposition and I can always count on her to keep a level head. I have never seen her fly off the handle,” said Collins.

started her journey into the realm of feature films. When asked what she hopes people gain from watching Lover’s Game Earle said, “I want people to be able to watch it, and for them in some way to understand that there is always hope in certain circumstances. Always hope, and just know that something good is going to come along if you wait.”

But what impresses her more than Earle’s amiability is her hustle and drive. Crawford said Earle is someone who has so many different projects on her plate but she does it all because she really loves film making, and getting not just her work out there but other people’s work as well.

Earle is currently working on a film about two young loves who’s passion for music brings them together but also pulls them apart, called Mad About the Boy. Her entertainment company called PL Entertainment is also working on a horror film titled, The Haunted Mind of an Insomniac.

Although Earle is busy with all her different projects she hasn’t forget about the film that WOUNY.COM •

So you want to be an Antique Dealer!

E

ach year thousands flock to the Bouckville Antique Festival. Many will go in hopes of finding hidden treasures or an item that will help to complete that missing piece to their collection. Some attendees come looking to learn about how to a dealer.

If you want to be an antique dealer, you need to first dismiss the television shows that depict the ease of finding and then selling items. They will say I found this for $200 and I can get $400 for it, leading you to believe that they will turn that item over immediately and make a clear profit of $200. What they are not telling you is the overhead that needs to be factored in before you can calculate the profit.

Let’s talk about that overhead: Dealers will travel locally and state to state to find items that people want, and if you have employees, trucks and several vehicles you then need to factor in wages, gas, time for loading, unloading, sorting and then pricing the treasures you have found. These are just the costs to find the items. If you have a store front, there is rent/mortgage, utilities, telephone, insurance including workman’s compensation, social security for the workers, advertising, cleaning expense, dumpster rentals for debris from clean outs and more.

Where can you find items? Many items can also be found at yard, house, estate, and storage locker sales, along with auction houses, onsite auctions, house calls and flea markets. I will even go online to fill a few customers wish lists. The Antique Festival gives you a large group of dealers in one location. Once you find items that you would like to have you will need to get opinions from experts as to the value.

Who are the Experts? The experts are people that will educate you about unusual pieces that you may not readily identify. If you live in a huge metropolitan area like Los Angeles you can find specialty shops for everything. This is something we do not have in Central and most of New York State. Therefore, you will need to develop a network of “go to” people and that takes years, even decades. Researching values online takes a lot of practice, persistence, time and even money.

The best, quickest research sites for rare items are not free. Publications and guides that are available are also costly and really do not provide real values. They will tell you that an item is much higher than what the market will bear. If I could pull a 25% profit from what I have, I would be rich! What the television shows do not tell you is that many items will be wholesaled to another dealer.

We all develop a clear understanding for what our customers are looking for and help them to find those items. Other items we have will go on Etsy, EBay, Amazon, Yahoo or a dozen other online sites that all take a fee and/or a percentage.

What type of dealer do you want to be? There are online only dealers. Other types sell at shows, own stores, are pickers, flea market dealers and booth holders in antique malls. Some dealers will specialize in sporting goods, books, toys, glass, china, mid-century moderne, outdoor furniture, Adirondack, music, pottery, tools...and the list goes on.

Are you beginning to see all of the choices to be made? I can’t even begin to tell you of all of the mistakes we as dealers have made along the way. In the beginning, not knowing your market and paying too much are two of the most costly mistakes. No matter how long you’ve been in the antiques field, you still occasionally pay too much for something and end up selling it at a loss.

So, if you want to be a dealer, go for it. It takes a lot of work and research and It is the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. I’ve made some of the best friends I have ever had. I have also made some horrendous mistakes along the way, buying and selling.

It is important to learn not to look back because there’s always more junque, another deal to be made and more treasures to found.

This is one of The Brick House Cafe’s “go to” recipes for almost every celebration. It can be made into the shape of your choice depending on the event.

Celebration Cheese Torta 16 oz cream cheese softened 1 c. Butter unsalted-room temp.

8 oz. goat cheese OR feta OR Gorgonzola.

1 garlic clove or 1 tsp. garlic powder 4 tsps dry sherry Dash of onion powder Process above in food processor until smooth.

Prepare pan-(heart, circle, square, star...9-10 inch) Spray with oil, cover with Saran so it fits closely on bottom and sides of pan. Leave some outside of pan making it easier to unmold later.

Depending on the season we use pine nuts/walnuts/almonds to coat the bottom of the pan. This should cover bottom of pan so that there are no spaces. Put cheese mixture on top being careful not to disturb the nuts. (the first layer, not your friends) Spread evenly to edge of pan.

Refrigerate several hours.

Unmold by placing on a platter of your choice, make sure you leave room for crackers and a few grapes for decoration. Carefully peel the plastic wrap off. Decorate the sides with chopped sun dried tomatoes OR dried cranberries or chopped up figs.

We also have used a basil pesto on the top with sun dried tomatoes.

This is a very versatile recipe!

It can be refrigerated up to a week, so easy to prep ahead of your party!

Straight Talk: Get Right to the Core!

ou may be one of many Americans who are cross-fitting, tri-training or half-marathoning their way to good health. These activities can instill joy, challenge and inspiration. Research shows that exercise can actually change your DNA and help you to become younger. But, if you aren’t spending as much time on your form as you do tracking the miles, you may not appear as young as you think. It’s not so much your salt and pepper locks or the character lines on your face. It’s your posture. It’s the surest sign of aging. And it’s more than skin deep.

Gravity takes your posture downward as you age. Experts contend that people lose 1-3 inches in their lifetime starting at age 40. As we lean over our computers and cell phones, many of us “lose our neck” too.

Take a look at photographs of yourself now and 20 years ago. You will see the loss. The most common cause of neck pain is a “neck and shoulder forward” posture. You may not even realize it is happening to you. But, rest assured, unless you are actively working against this pull it is happening every day.

Your posture is much more important than you know. Proper posture not only improves your appearance it also can decrease pain and injury. It allows for better flow of blood and oxygen throughout the body and can even make you feel better about yourself.

The Core of the Matter Most of us spend our days with our stomach muscles relaxed. Instead of using the muscles in our abdomen to protect our spine we actually use our back to perform many tasks. This can increase risk of spinal injury while our abdominal muscles atrophy. Activating your core is critically important to reduce and alleviate the pain in your back, shoulders, neck, knees and feet. Daily attention to your core will also change your appearance to one that is longer and leaner.

The surest way to strengthen the core is to practice Pilates breathing. Breathe deeply through your nose into the back of your rib cage without elevating your shoulders.

Exhale loudly through the mouth activating the deep abdominal muscles in your belly. his loud breath may invite a few stares from others but it also helps you to bring attention to the task. It feels like the abdomen is actually deflating. Continue breathing and feel your ribcage lower and hug your torso.

Practice Pilates breathing throughout your day and during your activities. Use the exhale on the hardest part of each movement whether you are performing sit-ups, bicep exercises, or riding your bike. Let your core do the bulk of the work for all your exercises and see amazing results.

Quality not Quantity Whenever you “work out” focus on your posture. If you run 5 miles but slog through the last mile with bad form you may be doing more harm than good. Poor form can increase injuries which can bring your fitness to an abrupt halt. Even one session with a Pilates Instructor can help you identify your personal form issues and take your fitness to the next level.

Every time you walk, bicycle, or engage in circuit training, your posture and form should be front and center in your mind.

Only do as many miles or repetitions as you can do in proper form. Once you are too tired to continue in this form, stop.

It is quality that will create real muscular change, not quantity.

Daily Adjustments 1.Be Aware: When you are sitting at your desk, running the track, or walking your dog, think about your posture. Focusing on Pilates breathing and proper alignment will increase the likelihood you will make adjustments when you begin to slouch.

2.Stand Tall Against a Wall: Stand against the wall with your shoulders all the way back. Stand tall and think about a string going up through your body and pulling up through your head. Walk away from the wall and stay in this posture for the rest of the day. When you find yourself losing form, go back to the wall and start over.

3.Walk like a Ballerina: Try walking lifted upward, lifting your torso off your hips.

This takes pressure off your feet and knees while lengthening your spine. This “ballerina think” will enable you to walk lightly throughout your day.

4.Get on a Roll. Purchase a 36 inch Foam Roller. Lie on it length-wise right up your spine. Feel how your shoulders fall to the sides and extend back. Lie for 3 minutes and roll off and lie on the floor. Try this daily and feel lengthened.

5.Work the Core: Join a Pilates or TRX class that focuses on form. Learning to use your core is one of the best investments you will ever make. Exercises that help you to strengthen the many muscles in your body are important for proper alignment. If you have been slouching for a while, many critical postural muscles have weakened.

Change will not happen overnight but with practice, you will see amazing results.

ctress and realtor Robin Curtis has walked the sometimes rocky path of fame and recognition ultimately choosing to return to the smoother, family centered lifestyle that Upstate New York is known for. Robin says that she fell in love with the village of Cazenovia and among her favorite local activities is enjoying dinner on the deck of her brother and sister in law, Kevin and Kristin Curtis’s home overlooking the beautiful lake. Indulging in Sunday sauce at Rose and Dick Zellar’s with partner Dave and the entire Zellar family is also another rich experience that Robin counts among her most treasured.

Just a Small Town Girl

At 25, her agent convinced her that she should head out to Los Angeles to be considered for roles in the upcoming television pilot season. Robin wasn’t so sure about the move.

I’m a northeastern girl and I knew I was going to miss my family. I wasn’t sure how I was going to fit in out in California”, Robin says. “I gave myself 6 months and if I didn’t get anything I was going home.” Within the 6 months, Robin landed her first role in a TV Movie called In Love with an Older Woman starring John Ritter, most known for his role on the popular sitcom Three’s Company.

Robin said that Ritter was a real sweetheart and very kind to her.

At 28 she got the call to audition for a new Star Trek film, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. The role of Vulcan Lieutenant Saavik, previously played by Kirstie Alley in earlier films, was being recast. “ Kirstie Alley most likely wanted to move on to other roles and had asked for an excessive amount of money.

The producers did not honor the request; she moved on and they elected to recast the role, Robin explains.With her thin resume in hand Robin went to meet with Spock himself, actor/producer Leonard Nimoy. “It was the sweetest experience; Leonard was the most gracious man. He shook my hand and we discussed the role and then we ran through a scene together. He filmed me and therefore I did not have to come back again and again to read. This was definitely not the typical process. He really wanted me for the role and it ended up being at the time what I thought was possibly my big break.” Robin was signed to do 3 films but after Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home her character was taken in a different direction and written out.

Robin shares her perspective on the phenomenon of being the new “it” girl in town. “I would make the analogy to selling real estate.

Robin was born and raised in the small town of New York Mills. She shares that her school music teacher, Jo Gatza made acting and singing such a joyful exercise that she could not help but get involved. “She absolutely galvanized our school productions and was one of those teachers’ that changes your life with her passion,” shares Robin. Robin’s mother was also a musician and she grew up in a household where family was expressive and affectionate.

She attended SUNY Oswego and began singing with all of their vocal groups including their select touring choir, the State Singers. “Some of my favorite memories are performing at College Campuses around New York State.“During the summer’s Robin

Upon graduation and with a degree in Vocal Performance, Robin says that she realized she wasn’t qualified to do much else besides performing. So, with some assistance from an Oswego Alum she snagged a part in an off Broadway show and within 6 months of being in Manhattan had booked her first commercial. “It really was sheer dumb luck”, Robin said. “I didn’t have a whole lot of moxie and was clueless as to what I was stepping into. I truly had that small town girl/Pollyanna view of the world.”

Noting that she was never typecast by her Star Trek role but “where it helped, it helped” her land other opportunities. Some roles of note during this period included a short stint on the ABC daytime drama General Hospital. Robin played opposite daytime legend Anthony Geary (Luke Spencer) in a short lived role. She notes that she played a character named Carol Pulaski.“I played a trucker with a Polish last name and growing up in an all Polish village, I was familiar with those names”, she joked. Robin said that Geary was a true professional. “Soap Opera actors work extremely hard. Their ability to perform on their feet is incredible they memorize lines quickly, actor’s like Tony Geary are a well-oiled machine. They nail their lines every time. I benefited from that because at the time I was not a welloiled machine.” She said that infamous soap producer Gloria Monty was tough and critical.

“I said to myself, I’m going to pretend she is talking Russian and just go out there and do my best.”

For 21 years in Los Angeles Robin did her best and was a successful working actor. “I was always a good girl. I always knew my lines

At 43 Robin’s personal life took a different turn as she reconnected and married a childhood friend. She subsequently left Hollywood behind relocating to the Cincinnati area to be with him.“I joke that I played the role of Midwestern housewife for 3 years and then I came home”, laughs Robin. The marriage did not work out and Robin found herself again at a crossroads. “I remember feeling like I was standing in the middle of the country saying to myself, do I go back (to LA) or do I go home? It was the holidays and I came back to Cazenovia and walked the village with my brother and sister in law, sang Christmas carols with the neighbors and I thought this is it. This is where I want to be. I will figure out the rest of my life from here. Who is going to love me? How am I going to make a living? I had to ask myself, What do I want to be when I grow up? You can definitely still ask yourself that question at 47 and at 55 or older! I love being home and you can absolutely come home again.

Robin purchased a 170 year old home in the village of Cazenovia that needed a great deal of work. “While it may have not been the smartest move for a single woman, I felt immediate hope and promise in this home. I had a visceral reaction upon entering it and other people do too when they come to visit.

Robin interviewed four contractors to complete her home renovations and the one that she hired, Dave Zellar, has been her partner both professionally and personally for Zellar Home in Radisson the last 12 years. “Dave is how I got in to real estate.

sion can be difficult given the economic climate in Central New York. “It is certainly not for the faint of heart as death, divorce and loss often drive our business. Robin says that the very best part of her work is witnessing that chemistry when a potential buyer is perfectly matched with a home. “I live for that harmony and symmetry as I think every real estate agent does.It’s magical.

Of course I remind people to be mindful of the mathematics in purchasing a new home but I also encourage folks to be cognizant of the emotional aspect as well. If you can’t see your Christmas tree or menorah in the home, don’t buy it! “ The Charms of Upstate New York An Upstate New Yorker to her core, Robin enjoys a plethora of activities and local amenities. “I just love the Rosamond Gifford Lecture Series. I always tell people that you don’t have to necessarily read the author’s book. I go to all the lectures whether I read the book or not. I love getting a different perspective and if I love the author I go buy the book. “Robin loves attending Syracuse Stage productions and has a particular affinity for all the nature that abounds in our area. I’m crazy about the weather here. I didn’t mind this past winter at all. You don’t realize or appreciate the beauty of the sky and the trees here until you leave.”

When reflecting on what she is most proud of personally and professionally, Robin says, “Just not giving up; believing that it’s never too late for love or to start over. I have been blessed with a truly extraordinary group of friends and family. Some of the most fun & rewarding professional experiences I’ve had have been working with my sister in law and best friend interior designer, Kristin Curtis. Professionally Robin notes, “Dave and I have worked so hard in building our company and I’m very proud of the product that he continues to build.

I believe that we have achieved something special and that our homes will stand the test of time.”

Improving Sight While Improving Image By: Kristen Penfield

here you are. In the mirror. You like what you see, but you realize you need to make a small change.

Your upper eyelids are drooping more than you want them to. Maybe it’s your lower lids that could use a lift? When you pull up on your lids, not only is your peripheral vision improved, your general appearance is tremendously improved. For many of us, the eye area seems to age faster than the rest of our face, causing us to look older than we really are. Aging around the eyes is certainly inevitable, but this may be a fight worth battling.

Beth Phillips, longtime registered Physician’s Assistant at CNY Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery tells us that it is more common than we may think.

Phillips said, “Certainly anyone can get droopy eyelids; it’s more common in older people, but people of all ages are affected by this. The eyelid lift, referred to as blepharoplasty, is done when the upper eyelid hands about 2mm above the pupil, starts to sag.” She added, “Many times it is done to improve a person’s peripheral vision, but more commonly done for cosmetic reasons.” Phillips has been a health care professional for over 20 years.

“The sagging eyelid is genetic,” claimed Phillips. “The likelihood of a person needing blepharoplasty goes up if it is in their family. But, generally speaking, it is many times caused by simple gravity,” she informed us. And it is certainly not a problem of only the aging. Sagging eyelids can start at the age of 30. As we age, our eyelids stretch, and the muscles that support them, become weak. Sagging eyelids can not only affect peripheral vision, but other symptoms could be difficulty with daily activities such as driving, reading or working on your computer.

Many people who wear contacts and have sagging eyelids confront problems on a daily basis. Not only does the weight of the eyelid make the contacts very uncomfortable, the contacts move around on the eye, refusing to stay in place. This causes the contact wearer to remove the contacts.

After surgery, this issue is eliminated.

Women who have sagging eyelids know that applying eye makeup becomes a problem, forcing only the upper half of the eyelid to show color. After blepharoplasty, a woman can regain the feminine look of eye makeup that was once hidden.

With a more youthful look, a new sense of confidence emerges for many women.

In so many ways, blepharoplasty is very beneficial.

If someone is considering blepharoplasty, the procedure is quite simple, and is usually covered by insurance. A“visual field test” is administered. If the person fails this test, then it is considered that a person’s peripheral vision is impaired. If the person misses over 30% of the test, the more likely it will be covered by their insurance. Since it is very easy to “fail” the “visual field test”, if your lids are extended to the lashes, the results and physician recommendations will be sent to the insurance companies and they will cover the cost of an upper eyelid surgery. The upper lid lift is covered by insurance more often than a lower lid lift.

Another positive for upper eyelid surgery is that the surgeon marks the lines and creases of the lids to ensure that the scars are as invisible as possible along the folds of the eyes. Excess fat, loose muscle and skin are removed. Aging around the eyes can certainly undermine self-confidence.

“Blepharoplasty is done on an outpatient basis, as opposed to a hospital stay, therefore keeping the cost down,” Phillips claimed. “There is relatively little downtime after the procedure, though healing of stitches is the majority. There is no scar left at the incision,” she added.

Both are equally good. They were sure to note that the key to grabbing the “good stuff ” first is to arrive at the sale early. Being the first ten people to enter a sale is where you want to be.

“There are all types of characters who go to estate sales,” said Penfield Sr., “There are dealers who attend and buy as much as they can and regular people who are there for fun. Young, old and in-between like the battle of estate sales. It’s really fun,” he added.

Penfield Sr. noted that other great finds at estate sales is antique furniture such as Stickley, at good prices, watches, cast iron and so much more.

ell folks, summer is truly upon us, and with the summer heat, comes blueberry time. These tasty berries are a staple in the northeast; nearly every house will have a bowl full of them sitting on the counter once the season begins.

In fact, July is National Blueberry Month!

If you have ever visited Maine, you know how many blueberries grow there. Maine leads the world for most wild blueberries produced. In the United States, Michigan is the leader for the most cultivated blueberries grown.

Blueberries are not only delicious, but nutritious as well.

Perhaps most importantly, they are packed with antioxidants, which can help prevent cancer.

In a study of 57 similar foods, blueberries were first for the amount of antioxidants they contain.

When it comes to the eyes, carrots should step to the side.

Blueberries may improve the night vision of humans. They also contribute to eye health by helping halt cataracts and ward off glaucoma. They also contain large amounts of Vitamin A and C, which have a variety of other health benefits, such as making your immune system stronger.

These fruits are good for a myriad of things. An increasing number of studies show that eating blueberries may help stop memory loss that often comes with old age. One of the causes of memory loss is that toxic proteins build up in the brain, damaging it. Blueberries are linked to a process called autophagy, or the cleansing of the accumulation of harmful proteins in the brain. It is a natural process, and researchers say that plant chemicals are beneficial for autophagy. Now only if they could help you remember where you left your keys.

An added bonus is that blueberries can be frozen without losing their nutritional integrity. You can freeze berries for three to six months,and they will still retain their flavor and health benefits.

Of course, anything this good has to have a catch. Blueberries a

part of the dirty dozen, a nickname referring to a dozen foods that have the worst pesticide problem, so make sure to wash your berries. It is suggested to wash them only before eating them, as blueberries have a soft outer skin and may mold easily. In many cases, pick-your-own blueberry farms are less likely to use pesticides.

Besides the bodily benefits, blueberries can also make a party in your mouth. One must only look as far as a decent recipe book to find a way to make a great pie. Some more ways to use this fruit is in blueberry crumble, smoothies, and pancakes. While muffins and parfait may seem like the perfect way to eat more blueberries, there are many options for getting these berries in your diet.

One unique way to eat them is blueberry salsa.

Seem crazy? This healthy side is perfect for any meal, and has easy to find ingredients such as avocado, cilantro, and strawberries, another fruit powerhouse.

Why not incorporate them into your diet as a blueberry dip. This acts as a sort of chocolate fondue; the creamy texture is perfect for dipping and goes well with everything. Of course, covering blueberries with yogurt is just as good.

For the more daring, you could try blueberry B-B-Q sauce. While this may seem far-fetched, and does have a long list of ingredients, anything that combines blueberries, coffee, bourbon, and maple syrup cannot taste bad.

And now, to everyone’s favorite part of a recipe book – dessert. A blueberry-coconut yogurt pie sounds perfect for a warm summer’s eve. This four-ingredient delicacy is healthy and tasty.

Overall, blueberries are one of the best things you can eat this summer. Get out picking, because the season starts around July 15th!

hen looking for a contractor, we never really know much about them. They could be a friend or a friend of a friend or a total stranger. We found Steven J. Coglitore and got his thoughts on being a contractor and what goes into remodeling and how he got started. Here is Steven’s story.

I think the first most important quality in any remodeling contractor is that they truly love their work. If you really love what you do, it will show through in the final product every time. In a day where everything is so fast paced and impersonable, it’s a wonderful feeling to stop and look at what has been accomplished by your hard work and many years of trial and error. I still enjoy the process of turning something old or broken into finished product that I know will last along time.

I was lucky enough, 16 years ago, to have been taught by a master, so in my opinion, that is the second most important quality of a great remodeling contractor. If you weren’t taught the proper basics of this work, you can’t ever expect grow into a professional in this industry. I’ve seen many contractors trying to figure out the basics of this work while in the middle of a renovation that was beyond their skill set. This industry has been plagued with sub par workmanship for the last few years and as a professional it’s very frustrating to see. There is no pride in the work that’s being done today, it’s just “get it done as fast as

possible and hope no one looks too closely”.

The third aspect to look for is weather or not the person or company your hiring is truly skilled in the type of work being done on your home. Is a roofer doing your windows? Is a painter building a deck for you? The professionals that I hire are skilled in their trade and don’t try and waste everyone’s time “trying out” other trades. When you hire inexperienced people to save money it almost always costs you more in the long run. Spend the money right the first time and you can avoid the headaches.

The real truth with any remodeling project is that there a million things that can go wrong during the process, but if you find a company that employs people who love what they do, have been taught how to do it and have the talent then you have a great shot and being very happy with the final project.

y now many of us have heard that obesity is an epidemic of immense proportion that threatens the health and life of all that are affected by it.But did you know that in 2013 obesity was declared an actual disease by the American Medical Association, the nation’s largest physician organization?

Obesity is a chronic medical condition with multifaceted causes and consequences, which is defined by the medical community according to a person’s Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is a measurement of height and weight that results in a number used as a screening tool to asses a person’s risk of disease. It is generally thought that the higher one’s BMI, the higher their body fat, therefore the higher the risk for other chronic medical conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and even certain cancers. Often many of these chronic medical conditions go hand in hand with obesity- these are called “co-morbid conditions” and management of them can make treating obesity even more complicated, and vice versa. Unfortunately, long-term weight management through non-surgical treatments has proven largely unsuccessful for those suffering from obesity.

Even as a Registered Dietitian, I can say that I have not seen anything work for those who suffer from obesity quite the same way, and with the same efficacy as bariatric surgery does.With proper diet, medications, behavior modifications and exercise, patients can often lose modest amounts of weight, but only for short periods of time, and statistics show that long-term weight loss using these methods is rare. In contrast to non-surgical treatments, weight loss surgery has demonstrated to be highly effective at sustaining long-term weight loss-we have seen this in our practice thousands of times since we opened in 2002.

Obesity related co-morbid conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke are some of the leading causes of preventable death in the United States. Obesity and obesity related conditions are estimated to cost more than $147 billion annually, and on average those with obesity spend $1,429 more on health care every year compared to those of normal weight. The costs of obesity are great, not only in terms of health and economics, but also quality of life and longevity. The management of obesity requires

restricting the amount of food the stomach can hold and also by causing gut hormonal changes that reduce appetite in various ways. These powerful changes result in long lasting weight loss, improved co-morbid conditions, and better overall quality of life for the overwhelming majority of those who undergo bariatric surgery. As just one example of how powerful bariatric surgery can be, let’s consider Type 2 diabetes as it relates to obesity. Obesity is a leading cause of Type 2 diabetes and people affected by obesity are 10 times more likely to have Type 2 diabetes.

In fact, Type 2 diabetes can nearly double the risk of death in people affected, and can lead to heart disease, amputations, blindness, kidney disease, and many other serious co-morbid conditions. Now, can you imagine what the best treatment option for such a debilitating disease might be- a medication, a diet, an exercise? Well, it is actually a surgical treatment- bariatric surgery, which can be more effective than other treatment options for those affected by Type 2 diabetes and obesity. Diabetes remission rates are as high as 85% with some bariatric procedures. This powerful effect is the reason why weight loss surgery is often called metabolic surgery- the effects go beyond just simple weight loss.

t’s back New York! The sun is back!

Oh beautiful sun, we have missed you.

After the long, freezing winter here in Upstate NY, isn’t it just great to feel those rays kiss your skin? Of course it is!

Just enough exposure is actually good for your skin. Too much exposure is when the problems start. It’s important to know the difference so that you can protect yourself, but still get that glow that you love.

Overexposure can be described as getting too much light. This is what causes the skin cancers, malignant melanoma, premature skin aging and so on and so forth.

But what is too much light and when do you know you’ve had enough? This actually depends on your skin type. The fairer you are, the higher your risk is for developing skin cancer caused by overexposure.

The darker you are, the less likely you are to being harmed by the sun, however you still need to protect yourself, everyone is at risk. The best way to prevent harm to your skin, eyes, and immune system is to limit your time in the sun.

It’s best to avoid the sun between 10am and 3pm. That is when the sun is at it’s strongest. Experts will tell you to avoid lying in the direct sun. The direct UV light is what causes the most damage, but in the same breath, it is also the best way to get the vitamin D that is needed.

A lot of people don’t know the benefits of the sun. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), ultraviolet (UV) rays can be helpful, in small amounts, for treating several diseases such as psoriasis, eczema, and jaundice, through

UV radiation. This of course is done under the care of a doctor and the amount of UV needed is determined at that time.

UV Radiation is also used to help treat rickets, a bone disease caused by lack of Vitamin D or lack of calcium more commonly found in children. UV is important for the production of Vitamin D, which is needed to enhance the absorption of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphate and zinc. Vitamin D can also be helpful in maintaining healthy bones and teeth, and is suggested to help protect against type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis, according to the Medical News Today. Vitamin D is a direct product of the Sun. Unfortunately since there ‘s also a high risk of getting cancer from too much exposure, among other things, there is no recommended amount of time to spend in the sun to ensure you get the amount you need. This can be scary, but that’s why we have good ole’ sunblock.

If you are a risk taker like me, make sure even when lying in the sun you put on your sunblock. Try to lay out before 10am or after 3pm so that the sun isn’t so strong.

Be sure to keep your eyes covered with a cloth or sunglasses. If you’re going to use a tanning bed, be sure to wear your lotion with some sort of SPF. It is essential to use the eye goggles to prevent cataracts and other issues with your eyes. I spoke with Joe Contini of Hakuna Matata Tanning Salon in Syracuse, who said, “make sure your tanning salon has their permit from the health department. See if they have any other credentials. We are all Smart Tan certified at our salon.” There are courses they can take on the topic to

become Smart Tan certified. If your salon doesn’t have this, recommend they do so that their clients, including you, have more trust in them. Make sure they skin type you and they will want to know your skins history, so they can help you tan in moderation to lesson the risks of skin diseases. Be sure to also ask questions you may have to educate yourself with the length of time you should tan. Another tip is to find out what bed you should use, and what lotions are best for your skin type.

If you’re not a risk taker but still want that glow, spray tans, when done correctly, are a great way to get that look but stay protected from the sun and guess what?

You can still use your good friend, Ms. Sunblock. There are also a ton of self-tanners out there that give a natural, gradual glow. Make sure to follow the directions, trust me, it’s important. When you do go out, be sure to use sunblock with an SPF rating of at least 15, most recommend 30, and wear a hat and sunglasses. If you have kids, it is a must to put sunscreen on them, and think of how cute those hats look! It’s recommended to wear long sleeves as well, but who are we kidding?!

It gets HOT here in Upstate New York in the summer. Lather up that sunblock and stay in the shade, and stay hydrated! Always ask your doctor before going tanning for skin conditions , such as acne, or using any products.
