Make your own Sunshine By Molly Lizzio, MA, LPMFT
S
pring comes on the calendar long before we see any noticeable changes in Upstate New York. We live in an area that it’s not unheard of to get a dusting of snow on Mother’s Day. Seasons and weather often have a big impact on peoples’ moods. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), or what is commonly referred to as seasonal depression should be making its exit around this time of year. Often during the winter months people experience decreased happiness, increased sleep troubles, and emotional numbness. While stressful, the holidays at least keep our focus elsewhere; but it’s the long months after the holidays that people really need to be able to take good care of themselves. There are many ideas and research links as to what causes seasonal depression. Currently there is a lot of research around the link between vitamin D and depression. Sun give us vitamin D, which research is making connections to the serotonin levels in your body. In the simplest explanation serotonin relates to feelings and happiness. In upstate New York we’re famous for getting very little sun year round, not to mention during our brutal winters. So if we’re getting less sun in upstate New York, that is affecting may aspects of our health from depression, to bone and joint health. There are even some connects to multiple sclerosis. All showing connections to vitamin D. The reasons to take advantage of sunlight are numerous, and it’s important we spend some time soaking in those rays when we have the chance, with the proper SPF of course. I remember learning the importance of vitamin D when I worked the night shift a few years ago. I discovered the immense benefits of vitamin D, and I
made sure to talk to my doctor about supplements, sun lamps, and any other way I could insure I was getting what I needed to on a daily basis. It gives a very real sense to those phrases like “Little Miss Sunshine” and a “sunny disposition”. Long before research made links to sunshine and mood people naturally associated the two. Whenever the sun rays stream down from the clouds and it looks so beautiful I always smile and picture all that vitamin D coming through and think: literal happiness. Women tend to be m ore prone to depression. So what are women to do when they are at a vitamin D disadvantage by living in a place such as upstate New York? We could all be like my Aunt Patti who follows the geese in fall to warmer weather, and returns in the Spring. We all envy these people; however moving twice a year isn’t feasible or realistic for everyone. Aside from the physical component of sunshine it’s also important for women to be able to make their own sunshine, metaphorically speaking. I spend a lot of time with clients trying to reframe some of their less than ideal situations or thought patterns. Reframing, or creating a different outlook to find different meaning, is a crucial skill for lifelong happiness. The fact is we can’t always control our circumstances, and it’s an absolutely necessary skill to be able to find the silver lining in difficult situations. It’s how you’ll survive it. You can think “Oh March- Winter still isn’t over and it’s so miserable out” or you can choose to see it as “March means Winter is almost over and Spring is coming!”. That difference between the glass half empty and half full is what will change your life. The essence of both messages is the same “Winter isn’t
over yet”. But one focuses on how less that ideal that is, and one focuses on the future beyond it. Spring will come. It always does. We’ve never been locked in an eternal winter. And while it can of course be frustrating to have to wait so long for nice weather, it’s important to remember the time will pass anyways.
You can spend half your year planning for a different day, and wishing away the present, or you can flip the script and try to enjoy now and look forward to the future. Think about all the ways you have control in making today just a little bit more bearable. Try something new, treat yourself, treat someone less fortunate, drink a fresh smoothie, wear a bright color to work when it’s cold and miserable out. Wearing a bright yellow blouse to work isn’t a cure all for the winter blues; it’s about larger process. Maybe you recently lost 10 lbs from working out, so you went shopping for that shirt with your best girl friend after a nice lunch together. Then getting compliments on that shirt at work that day can improve your mood in that moment. Happiness is infectious, and there’s something to be said for the notion of “fake it till you make it”. Although it can be hard, try not to focus on the glass being half empty. Take those lemons fill your glass to the brim with lemonade. By focusing on the tiny things you can control each day, living a life of gratitude and finding small moments of happiness is what creates a happy life. You won’t need to wait for Spring, because in you is all the sunshine you need.

ere you in class with Megyn Kelly at Tecumseh Elementary School? Maybe you caught a glimpse of her at the Carrier Dome, on Valentine’s Day for the Syracuse /Duke Basketball game? She attended the game with her husband Doug, a Duke alum. (Of all things!) More likely though, you have seen Megyn gracing the pages of articles and appearing every evening on her popular program, The Kelly File on Fox News. Time magazine named Megyn Kelly one of the 100 Most Influential People of 2014, deeming her “an authoritative force in cable news.” In the Time article, colleague and Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume noted that upon viewing her audition tape “she had great looks, a strong voice, authoritative yet cheerful presence, obvious intelligence, in other words, limitless potential.” Hume chronicles her rise at Fox, “She gave us insightful Supreme Court coverage and she was among the first to spot flaws in the false rape charges against the Duke lacrosse players. She was too good to last as a mere correspondent and she didn’t.” Indeed, Megyn’s skill in cutting to the core of complex issues along with her ability to bring an element of surprise to the table continues to capture the attention of viewers and earn the respect of FOX critics. Jim Rutenberg, chief political correspondent for The New York Times Magazine writes about this element of surprise that he calls The Megyn

Kelly Moment, also the title of a recent feature in the magazine. According to Rutenberg, a Megyn moment is “when you a Fox guestmaybe a regular guest or even an official contributor- are pursuing a line of argument that seems perfectly congruent with the Fox world view, only to have Kelly seize on some part of it and call it out as nonsense, maybe even turn it back on you.” Rutenberg goes on to say “ You don’t always know when, how or even if the Megyn moment will happen but you have to be ready for it, no matter who you are. The Megyn moment has upended the popular notion of how a Fox News star is supposed to behave and led to the spectacle of a FOX anchor winning praise from the very elites whose disdain Fox has always welcomed.” Megyn’s program, The Kelly File, has given Fox its biggest new hit in 13 years and has attracted a more youthful, diverse demographic. In its time slot, it was the highest rated non sports program in all of basic cable for 2014. Megyn’s qualities of optimism and resiliency were honed early on as a teenager, and young adult, after enduring a year of bullying as a seventh grader, and then coping with her father’s sudden death ( heart attack) at age 15. In a article with Elle magazine last January, she cites her mother as her greatest influence and recalls how on the evening her father died, she asked her mother who at 44 years of age with 3 children was the same age Megyn is now, “ Will you ever be happy again?,“ Of course, I will, honey. And you will too. “
Though money was tight, Megyn applied to the S.I. Newhouse School at Syracuse University in hopes of pursuing a career in news. She was accepted to the University but not to Newhouse. She majored in political science at the Maxwell School, leading her to Albany Law and a lucrative career in corporate litigation. Her confidence and motivation helped her again navigate difficult times that included risky career and personal life changes. This involved leaving her successful yet unfulfilling position as an attorney to break into television news. She began by submitting a TV demo tape and cold calling news outlets and her persistence paid off. She got her big break when she was hired by WJLA- TV, the ABC affiliate in DC in June of 2004. In July or August of that same year Fox News became aware of her work and she was hired as a co anchor for America’s Newsroom with Bill Hemmer and started her steady rise at Fox. At this time Megyn was also at a crossroads in her personal life. She said in 2013 in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, “Once I found professional happiness, it gave me time to think about other areas in my life which I wasn’t happy. The next obvious candidate for introspection was my marriage.” Megyn and her first husband had grown apart and they divorced. In 2008 she married Douglas Brunt; they are the parents of 3 young children.
“We were all so happy in Syracuse” Megyn graciously took some time from her hectic schedule to share some thoughts on politics, life away from the camera and her love for all things Orange! Her answers display the trademark wit, honesty and relatable persona that Fox viewers have come to trust and admire. WOUNY: Please talk a little bit about your time in Syracuse and what lessons you learned while you were at the University, that you feel prepared you for what you do today? MK: I lived in Syracuse for nine years. Nine years after we moved away, I came back to attend S.U. I also interned at a law firm in Syracuse one summer during my law school years, and gave serious thought to moving back. I love that town. It’s the weather, obviously. Like most kids in the area, I grew up going to school, riding my bike around, playing kick the can, and sneaking away to Shoppingtown when I could. Nothing fancy, no country clubs or expensive ski vacations, but tons of time with my family, playing in the yard covered in leaves in the fall or three feet of snow in the winter, going to the lake beaches, and enjoying family BBQ’s complete with my sister, brother and myself playing our musical instruments for “entertainment.” It was idyllic, really, and taught me a lot about what’s important in life. We were all so happy in Syracuse. We had very little money, but we had each other. And it was all we needed. Now I live in Manhattan and have some of the trappings of a financially secure “cosmopolitan” life. What I really care about, what makes me happiest, however, is being with my husband and our kids at home. We build forts in our apartment,it used to be igloos in our ‘Cuse backyard, sled in the park. It used to be on a trail I named “Greased Lightning” across from our DeWitt home, and have movie days where we eat popcorn and watch a Disney flick . When I was a kid in Syracuse, before, cable. The big highlight was seeing “Star Wars” at the mall. Then, as now, all that matters is being together. My friends in Syracuse get that. My time at the University was spectacular. I did all the things you’re supposed to do in college, many of which help me as a television anchor to this day. I fell in love, I joined a sorority. I worked two jobs to help pay my room and board. I navigated the joys of living in a “triple” at Day Hall and of my first apartment at Skytop. I taught aerobics to the Syracuse Lacrosse team , the one that won three national championships. Yes, that was all my doing . Wasn’t it?
I made, and lost, friends, ate late night pizza at Acropolis, went to the computer lab to type and print out my papers. Yes I am dating myself. I became part of the Student Senate. I had a creative writing professor who believed in me, and told me to consider grad school (I would end up at law school). I developed my IQ, but also my EQ, through the many social and campus activities S.U. has to offer. And both are important in my current job and in life. WOUNY: What is it about politics that captivates your attention the most? MK: I don’t care much about the parties, but I do love covering the horse race. Watching politicians manipulate the process is actually fairly entertaining, like when they forget on Tuesday what they said on Monday and then through the magic of videotape we get the job of reminding them. I do worry about the process however, and whether it attracts the best people. Haven’t you asked yourself, given the incredible scrutiny we give these politicians, who in their right mind would want the job? The American appetite for salacious details about our public figures is sad to me. It’s as if you have to live a perfect life in order to ascend to a public position, when the truth is mistakes only make a person more human, more empathetic, and probably better at what they do. WOUNY: A lot of people have had the chance to see you on FOX News, but what is your life like when you’re not in front of the camera? What sort of things do you do in your spare time? MK: If I’m not at the office I’m usually with my family. I try to spend most days with my children. I see my son Yates, 5 and daughter Yardley, almost 4 off to school in the morning and then my 18 month old Thatcher and I get the morning together. I try to pick my older kids up from school when I can, and we eat lunch together most days at the dining room table. It feels like a siesta. Often my husband Doug will bring them to Fox for an office dinner picnic and they love it here. The long hallways are fun to explore and Yates in particular loves shooting this Nerf apparatus I bought him at the various office doors. (Thankfully John Stossel has a very good sense of humor.) Sometimes my husband and I will grab breakfast or lunch out together, which feels like a real treat. A middle of the day date is rather indulgent, but since we don’t have dinner together during the work week given my schedule it’s a luxury we try to make time for. On the weekends we see friends and family.
The daytime is devoted to fun with our kids. NYC has amazing museums, shows, parks, kids’ amenities in the apartment buildings, and is very child-friendly. Sometimes we head to the ‘burbs for a little backyard and basement fun, which our little ones love. When the weather is nice I love walking through Central Park more than any other activity in Manhattan. Window shopping in SoHo is also a treat. For dinner out we love Elio’s on the Upper West Side. Ask for Brian to make your martini and for the love of God do not ask for any sort of a fruity drink or he will make you change your order or threaten to have you removed. WOUNY: Are you surprised by all of the media attention you’ve been getting lately? What do you attribute your recent success to? MK: Have you seen the movie “To Rome With Love” by Woody Allen? There’s a character in it played by Roberto Benigni an ordinary man who is not a public figure who wakes up one day and suddenly people care what he thinks. From his aftershave to politics, they suddenly print his musings and shove microphones in his face. Sometimes I feel like that character, and wonder why anyone would care what I have to say. That’s one benefit of growing up as I did, where I did, with the family. I am never in danger of getting drunk on my own wine. My family thinks it’s fine I am on TV and all, but they are much more concerned about whether I called my 99-year-old Nana or what funny thing my kids said this week, and whether I am sleeping enough. I’m not. People do care about what she says and with her professional achievements along with having 3 children under the age of 6, it is likely Megyn Kelly won’t be getting enough sleep for awhile. Her grit, passion and energy have set her apart from others in her field. While her openness and lack of pretention is true to her Syracuse roots. Her Facebook page has pictures and references demonstrating her love for our region. A photo taken at the SU/ Duke game is captioned, Bleed Orange Always and she recently posted a “throwback Thursday” picture from that same weekend that was taken in front of her freshman dorm and noted what a great time she had visiting the campus. No doubt alumni and Central New Yorker’s enjoy the shout outs on social media and on her news program. We applaud Megyn’s success and are proud to call her one of our own! The Kelly File is on the Fox News Channel at 9pm Eastern Time. WOUNY.COM • MARCH 2015

Bite into a Healthy lifestyle By Linda Quinn, MS, RDN
A
s a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, I have celebrated National Nutrition Month for 33 years. This year’s theme gets me particularly excited. It’s ““Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle”. I love the name. It sounds fun and youthful. It encourages us to make it real and use our teeth! Chew not Goo But, it turns out some Americans are eschewing chewing altogether and drinking and squeezing their way to better health. It’s the new fast food for the health conscious. With healthy sounding drinks and claims, many people are leaving the mixing and blending to the industry. Although this is a fast and easy way to get more fruits and vegetables into your diet, is it optimal?
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is bucking the trend and actually recommending we go chew some food. And I am personally all for it. There is nothing like biting into a juicy Honey Crisp apple or the crunch of nuts, seeds and fruit on my morning cereal. I am a chewer and it is a joyful thing. In my relationship with the food, I want to look at it, smell it, taste it, chew it and really take it in. But, isn’t chewing important for us?
love to eat one meal that isn’t pureed and be able to enjoy the different textures.
Research shows that more than taste and smell, texture may be a critical component of our experience with food.
Additionally, we do know from research by Barbara Rolls, PhD, that if we drink our food we will not feel the fullness in our gut to tell us to stop eating or to keep us satisfied. Chewing slows us down and increases the enjoyment. Without the need to chew, we lose those sensations.
A recent headline in the LA Times declared” Juicing Trend still strong in 2015” with Juicing and smoothie bars going strong throughout LA and Hollywood. In fact, the cold-pressed juice market is estimated at $100 million a year.
Chew on This Chewing may also be important for optimal oral health. It takes serious chewing to break down foods such as carrots, apples and cucumbers. Chewing “may disturb dental plaque, and serve as a cleansing mechanism,” says Christine D. Wu, a pediatric dentistry researcher at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Then there are squeezable foods. Athletes have been using pouches and squeezable food for years. Now the trend is going main stream. Squeezable baby food is now made by all the major baby food brands. There is GoGo Squeez for babies and Fast Fruit and Plum for adults. The company Plum was named one of Forbes’ America’s Most Promising Companies this year. In fact, spokespeople for many of these companies say the reason this trend is so big is that people just don’t have time to make food and eat it. What in the world could be more important than eating? Ok, breathing I guess.
In a study published in the journal “Chemical Senses” David Cook and his colleagues concluded that we not only consider information from our taste buds and noses, but also the feeling of the food in our mouths to determine flavor. They actually call it “Oral Shear Stress”. In this study, the heavier the food, the sweeter it was perceived.
So instead of remaining in your mouth and settling on teeth, bacteria get cleared away. Chewing and eating food has an important place in our lives and out health. Texture Matters Don’t get me wrong an occasional smoothie or juice is great but to live that way when we have perfectly good teeth, it is a shame and a waste.
Enjoy an occasional drink, soup and slurp but remember to “Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle” by chewing a fresh salad and tasty foods prepared with love and care. Get out for a nice walk while you are at it.
There are many people I know who would

Patti Ronsvalle
R
By Christine Vickers
ochester native Patti Ronsvalle began her career in theatre as an actress and producer of local dinner theatre. She was first discovered by Kodak, who hired her to work as a model for them and act in their commercials and training videos. However, from there, her career took off in many different directions. The common thread to the various positions she has held, from television producer and host to innovator, publisher, professor and clinical therapist, is a passion for helping others, particularly women and families. Though she spent her early years in television and notes that “production and promotion is my blood,” she was always drawn to working outside the studio with nonprofits and inner city businesses and residents. She became one of the first women in the Upstate NY region to own their own production company, and created the first company (Datemaker) to link print dating ads with legitimate, non-900 area code phone numbers. “If you are a woman in business, you just have to keep taking chances, you have to keep driving and keep moving,” she said. Despite early successes, in her 30s Ronsvalle returned to school to get her Master of Social Work at Syracuse University. “I had to switch gears and think about where my heart was, and it was in being part of a helping profession. Going back to school was the best thing I’ve ever done. It’s never too late to go back to school!” After completing her degree, Ronsvalle began working in clinics and in private practice with children, adolescents and women. Her work in the mental health field subsequently lead to adjunct positions as a psychology and sociology professor at local area colleges. “I found what I love to do; I’m a good therapist. I am very proud of that,” she said. “I also realized that I had to feed my creative side as well. It’s a constant burst of ideas and concepts that I am prepared and ready to act on.” One of these concepts is the very popular yearly event that Ronsvalle produces for women across New York State and beyond. The Big Event The 11th annual What Women Want New Trends Spring Show & Sale is held at Casa Larga Vineyards Event Center, Fairport, on

Saturday March 21, from 9:30-4:30 p.m. Over 70 specialized vendors are present, and more than 90 percent of these vendors are women-owned businesses. This interactive event offers food, wine fun, career information, technology, home, family, fashion, jewelry, accessories, personal services, networking, health and more. Cost to attend is $5 per person. For BFFs in groups of five or more, the cost is $4 per person. Tickets are available at the door and parking is free. Ronsvalle’s company, Big Kid Productions, produces the event, which in the past has attracted anywhere between 1,000 - 2,000 women. “After over 25 years of producing and promotion, I have the skills and tools to run a very clean, efficient event.” “It’s really a unique formula in that we feature retail and entertainment for an interactive event that’s just fun! It’s a dazzling display, everyone is talking to everyone else, there are women laughing, and money flying. People are just having a ball! I tell our vendors, ‘Don’t sit behind a table. they have something for the women to do. Get up, dance with them, feed them, talk with them, love them.’” She said that when she began the event 11 years ago, it was to primarily help women who were trying to kick start their businesses. In many cases these business owners were not experienced in marketing and promoting themselves, and this event provided them with a way to do just that. An underlying theme of service and helping women and families exists in all of Ronsvalle’s endeavors. “Every single event that I produce or will ever produce has ties to a nonprofit,” she said. “This year, the Pittsford Food Cupboard, an organization that serves five zip codes including the city of Rochester, will be at our sale to collect canned and boxed food and cash donations. There are bigger organizations that collect food, but we like to seek out the smaller ones and raise money for the unsung heroes.” Big Kid Publishing Another one of her creative ventures is a publishing company, which has produced five books relating to Rochester area history. “In the last 25 years, as a small press publisher of five titles, we have raised more than a million dollars for nonprofits in the Rochester community through our books and donation of partial proceeds,” she said.
Rochester Eats! is among the titles, a blastfrom-the-past collection of nostalgic Rochester area restaurants, some dating back to the early 20th century. The book includes secret recipes of classic dishes from the former local favorite, Dickens Restaurant, as well as stories about the Revolving Restaurant, and tales of Rochester executives’ attempts to walk off the revolving platform after their three-martini lunches! Former Democrat and Chronicle restaurant critic Karen Deyle is the author of this book. Another title, Rochestrivia, a book of 2,000 questions and answers all about Rochester, is color-coded to play along with Trivial Pursuit. It was written by Ronsvalle’s then husband, former broadcaster Pete Dobrovitz, printed by Eastman Kodak on their iGen3 presses, and used as a digital sample worldwide. The book Susan B and Me, which Big Kid Publishing produced to commemorate the 100th anniversary of women’s rights champion Susan B. Anthony’s death, consists of stunning photos and personal expressions from women around the world. Writers ranging in age from 12-85 address in their own words the questions of why the women’s movement has stalled and what early suffragists would think of contemporary women. Included are over 100 photos taken by Rochester Institute of Technology photography graduates. The book was printed by Xerox on their digital presses, and the forward was written by Ursula Burns, Chairman and CEO of Xerox Corporation. “It was so, so cool and all I had to do was ask her,” Ronsvalle enthused. “I think that is really the bottom line as I work: NO FEAR. Women would be surprised at how much they can accomplish when they simply keep breaking through any fear or intimidation they may feel,” she reflected. “We are socialized to “tip toe,” but tiptoeing only gets you sore tootsies. I love to encourage women to plant their feet and keep moving forward.” For more information on attending on the New Trends Spring Show and Sale in Fairport, visit: www.whatwomenwantweekend.net.

Fabulous Eyes By Mary McCandless
Are you a Tweezer, Threader or Waxer? Perfect hair and makeup needs perfect brows too. To have beautiful eyes many of us suffer from sensitive skin and shy away from the easy methods. When we pull at the skin we tend to lift it up causing it to become irritated. Oh the things we do to keep us looking fabulous. Tweezing is time consuming and you need alot of patience. Waxing is fast and simple. Glob it on and rip it off ! There is also threading which has been around for thousands of years and has now become popular. It takes about 7 minutes as the hair is twisted and removed from you brow. But for us ladies with sensitive skin we tend to swell, get small red bumps and hide until it goes away. You do not have to stop tweezing, threading or waxing, you just need to be prepared. What I have learned from Sangita Kumar at Joseph’s at the Carriage House is that if you ice your eyes right after, then treat the area with neosporin you will not have the swelling. For me, I no longer have to spend hours of standing at the mirror trying to rid those annoying hairs. I can now have my eyes done professionally without suffering for days. Hey ladies with sensitive skin now can have beautiful eyes without hiding for days. If you have tips to share, let us know!

What’s Your Age? By Sandy Emmi
W
hat is your age telling you? The phrase “coming of age” is often used to describe the passage from adolescence to adulthood, and it generally implies a time of discovery and realization of one’s potential. Yet, what about the transition from middle age to our senior years? Unfortunately, this stage in life is more likely to be viewed, at least in western societies, as a steady decline rather than a period of continued learning, growth and development. However, this view of aging is changing, thanks in part to people becoming more health conscious; eating more fruits and vegetables and exercising both their minds and bodies to stay fit and look younger. Today’s active seniors are rejecting the concept of early retirement—running marathons, taking dance classes, and socializing more than ever. For many people, the typical stereotypes associated with their chronological age simply no longer apply. The word “senior” is not representative of how they feel inside, and they want their outside appearance to reflect continued vitality. For instance, more and more women are continuing to have fun with fashion and evolve their style in ways that are both complimentary and age appropriate. While that doesn’t necessarily mean donning a bikini, it does mean choosing clothes that make them feel good, and avoiding those that make them look older than they feel. Even more helpful for some are new cosmetic procedures and techniques that can accommodate the aging process. There are literally thousands of products on the market to assist in eliminating creases, fine lines, sinking jowls, and sagging skin. However,

in about one hour, you can rid yourself of any or all of these signs of aging with fillers and other products known as injectables. Some women (and men) now choose fillers and other types of injectables like Botox® over a facelift because they are less invasive, the process is simple, and the change is gradual. Results are usually subtle and more likely to elicit comments like, “Did you change your hairstyle?” or “You look refreshed—what have you been doing differently?” rather than, “Have you have work done?” Still, with so many options out there, there are a lot of questions about what can be done to address specific cosmetic concerns, as well as questions about the safety, efficacy and expense of these types of treatments. To learn more, we reached out to Beth Phillips, Registered Physician Assistant from CNY Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery, who shared with us what products are used for different areas of the face. “Fillers are made of different densities so that they can be placed either lightly under the skin or deeper down in,” she said. “Radiesse® volumizing filler and Juvéderm® work great for facial wrinkles such as nasolabial folds, chin wrinkles and marionette lines [vertical lines that run downward from the outer corners of the mouth along the outside of the chin].” Phillips also noted that Juvederm Voluma® (the only injectable gel that is FDA-approved to correct age-related volume loss in the cheek area) is now used for restoring round, full, youthful cheeks. She said that Botox®, rather than fillers, is used for erasing those lines that form when we squint and frown, which generally begin to appear in our 30s and become more prominent with age. With careful injection, Botox® can be used around the lips as well, to treat vertical lip lines and add volume.
“All products are FDA approved, so they are safe to use,” Phillips said, adding that you should “Always know who is doing your injections. It is important that you choose someone who is experienced and has done many of these procedures to help ensure that injections are made properly and that you get the results you want.” She also notes that there are no guarantees with these procedures—skin and musculature varies from person to person, and so will your results. In general, most products last up to a year, with the cost of treatment ranging from hundreds to even thousands of dollars depending on which injectables are used, and the number of syringes needed to achieve the desired result. Judging from the popularity of these procedures, many find the price is worth it in terms of the results that can be achieved. Of course, not everyone who wishes to improve their appearance or soften the effects of aging has the money or desire to try injectables. However, those who wish to improve upon what they have will find that many topical products are available, both by prescription and over the counter, to help increase moisture, build collagen and even reverse sun damage. Retin-A, Vitamin C serums, and of course sun screen can work together to help you regain a youthful glow. It is never too late to start taking care of your skin. If you are still wondering what options are best for you, take advantage of a free skin care consultation available from Dava Bellucci, at CNY Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery. You can reach her at 315-663-0112. Look for our continued series on skin care.
