CARING AT A HIGHER LEVEL MEANS PERFORMING AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. St. Joseph’s is the only hospital in Syracuse and Central NY rated high performing in ALL NINE procedures measured by U.S. News & World Report. Proof that a higher level of care leads to the highest level of performance.

Say “NO” By: Molly Lizzio, LMFT

S

ometimes the secret to having it all is to say “No.” In our success crazed society the notion of saying “Yes” to every passing opportunity is often seen as the road to your dreams. And while no one will argue that hard work doesn’t pay off, there is also a difference between clear and consistent focus upon the object of one’s desire, and running around chasing every opportunity that passes hoping in some roundabout way it leads to something good. How can you tell the difference? Ask yourself “how does it feel? “And allow your own inner current to be the guide for a second. Go towards what is exciting, what provokes love, passion, drive, and curiosity. When you’re catching those opportunities, it’s much more likely that you’ll be on the right path to your dreams. If you’re droning along feeling unfulfilled, burnt out it’s going to take so much energy just to survive it. You don’t usually find the perfect job if you’re so busy unhappily slaving away at your current one. If you’re in dark or negative space chances are you’re not looking for the miracles that parade by often dressed up very differently than you ever expected they might be. The hunger for something new and satisfying is dampened by the weight of everything that is holding you back. Time and time again, we hear success stories of people getting the dream job when they had $11 in their bank account. They left the comfort and security of their jobs, family, etc., and took a dive into their dreams, and it paid off. If your focus isn’t diverted into the survival mode, it makes it so much easier to feel the excitement and joy that can lead you to your dreams. When you say” no” to everything that isn’t a match for you, you are saying “yes” to everything that is. The fact of the matter is often times we’re so full and pre-occupied with the busy-work of life that there isn’t room for the big things we really want.

6 wouny.com • March 2017

But what we really want is sometimes not even clearly defined in our minds and hearts- we only know what we don’t want anymore because we’re up to our neck in it and feeling like we’ll never get out. That’s why the very first step to getting everything you want is knowing what you want, and then recognize what it feels like to think about it as though it’s real. Once you have that feeling you are duty-bound to follow it. When you follow a feeling, you’ll get constant reassurances that you’re on the right path because it will continue to feel good. When it no longer feels good, it’s probably no longer serving you, and you might be walking further and further from where it is you want to go. Ever the optimist I believe that even if you’re on the wrong path you can still make your way to something wonderful. Those hard paths usually provide lessons you need to understand deeply before you can see your heart’s desire in front of you. It can be reassuring to know what’s for you will not pass you. You don’t have to worry about missing out on something that’s meant for you. Someway somehow it will come to you. Even those who do not believe in a notion of fate or energy can look at it in a tangible way, that if it is something you are bound and determined to do or have you will cut through the distractions and make it happen. You can’t have a meaningful and fulfilling relationship while your current one is so bad, you can’t make a million bucks when you’re doing the same-old thing at a job you hate. Try saying “no.” Say no to people and opportunities that don’t fit; say “no” to ideas and norms that don’t feel right. Say “no” and find your “yes.”

LOL...”Love our Lasers!”

Lasers and Skin Rejuvenation... a Match Made in Heaven. By: Beth Phillips,RPAC orking in a plastic surgery office, I have the good fortune to be able to see first hand most of the procedures performed. This allows me to determine which procedures, I feel work best. When patients come in to discuss options for helping to keep them looking more youthful, I almost always suggest taking care of their skin as a first course of action is. I personally have a history of very extensive sun exposure in my younger years. I have frequently reminisced with patients about our blatant disregard in the past for sunscreen and use of products such as baby oil to ensure that my skin burned in hopes of achieving a deep tan. My skin was freckled, and sun damaged. I can honestly say that my skin looks better now than it did 10 years ago. While I am much better about sun exposure to my skin and better about using good products regularly, I would say that the laser procedures that I have had performed gave me the best and most noticeable results.

frequently encountered terms are “ablative” and “non-ablative.” Ablative means “mechanical removal” and ablative procedures will remove the top layer of the skin and sometimes part of the deeper dermis. There are several different laser brands in the market. In our office, we use a Sciton laser. While the name of some of the treatments are laser-specific, the concept of what is being performed is not.

different depths. Profractional- is also an ablative treatment that creates thousands of micro-channels in the skin. This initiates the body’s wound healing response and creates increased thickness to the skin. This works well for acne scarring, and downtime is only 1-3 days. Contour TRL- combines a microlaser peel and allows the provider to add carefully targeted heat to the deeper levels of the skin to further tighten underlying tissue. Downtime is variable based on the depth and intensity of the treatment. Skintyte- is a non-ablative procedure that leaves the overlying skin intact, but delivers heat to the underlying levels of the skin. This causes soft-tissue coagulation and deep tissue heating that initiates the body’s natural healing process to create tissue firming. This has no downtime. ClearScan- Primarily used to treat spider veins and vascular lesions. Downtime is minimal.

The word “Laser” is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. In essence, lasers work by generating a concentrated and penetrating stream of pulsed light that can be very accurately controlled and strategically directed over the skin. This accuracy allows the provider to address specific patient concerns.

Enough technical talk...the laser procedures that I most frequently suggest in our practice include:

There are several terms that are important in understanding and should be carefully explained to you by your provider. IPL (intense pulsed light) and BBL (broad-band band light) are often categorized as laser treatments for simplicity. They vary slightly in that they provide multiple wavelengths of light energy that create laser-like effects. Blue-light therapy used to treat inflammatory acne is not laser either, but still is an effective skin treatment. The other

Photofacial- is an IPL/BBL treatment that targets pigmentation on the skin. There are settings for dark/brown spots and settings that target red discolorations. Downtime is minimal. Microlaser peel- is an ablative laser procedure that removes the top (epithelial) layer and a small percentage of the dermis. This works well for deep wrinkles and scars. This has more downtime that usually ranges from 3-5 days. It can be performed at

ClearSense- is used to treat nail fungus and warts. This has no downtime. These treatments are available for men as well as women. Glowing skin will help you to project youthful radiance. Laser skin treatments should be performed by trained individuals with the appropriate credentials. Many offices, like ours, will offer a free consultation to discuss options and choose the best service for your desired results. So don’t cover and conceal your skin... rejuvenate it! Consider laser treatments for real results! For more information visit us at www. plasticsurgeryofsyracuse.com

Facing the Facts: Kidney Foundation CEO. Nannette Carbone Speaks Out

Kidney Walk

People don’t wanna talk about it. It has to do with your elimination system in your body. No one wants to talk about it,” says Nannette Carbone. She is the CEO of the CNY National Kidney Foundation, and has been for four years. “It’s just a bodily function, and it cleanses your body. That’s something we should be very aware of.” The Rome, NY native attended Suny Morrisville for two years studying journalism, then obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from Syracuse University in Marketing/Public Relations. She ended up working full-time in PR at Hamilton College before moving to Syracuse and becoming involved in the shopping center industry. After being approached by Marion Makhuli (former CEO of the Kidney Foundation who founded the chapter locally 34 years ago - Nannette refers to her as a “dynamo”) Carbone was hired for the position. Helping others is in her nature, like breathing or blinking. Covering 13 counties can make for a full day of driving. She gives educational talks, risk assessments (where they take blood

By: Abbey Adams pressures and run people through an evaluation that’s free of charge,) answers phone calls, refers people to national hotlines… not to mention, helps plan five large events every year for the foundation. The Facts: 1 in 3 Americans is at risk to develop kidney disease. The Kidney Foundation’s focus is on awareness, prevention and treatment for those at risk or afflicted. Your kidneys help make red blood cells, keep your bones healthy, and maintain a balance of nutrients in your body. “There aren’t many signs (of kidney disease.) Once your kidneys start to shut down, you’ll know,” says Carbone. Your GFR (glomerular filtration rate) is the key to figuring out your kidney health. This is the filtration rate by which your kidneys cleanse your system. “People don’t understand that sodium, high cholesterol, obesity, the fact that you’re at risk if you’re in a certain age group, race...It really increases the risk.” She also wants to convey that it isn’t necessary to have two kidneys to live a healthy life. If you want to help someone, you know or even a stranger through

kidney disease, donating can save a life. Recent kidney donor, Holly Wright said if she had the chance to donate again she would. “It isn’t as scary as you would think. There are so many resources out there to make you feel at ease.” Wright credits the foundation for her newfound knowledge of the disease saying, “I never realized how many people needed kidney transplants until looking up information on the kidney foundation web site.” The Kidney Foundation: The National Kidney Foundation CNY is the leading organization in the U.S. dedicated to the awareness, prevention and treatment of kidney disease. Last year, they reached over 5,200 people to do free risk assessments. The Foundation has a volunteer nurse and doctor who work with Nannette to reach out to the public and inform them on all things’ Kidney Disease. Early detection and treatment can slow or halt the progression of kidney disease. More than 80 cents of every dollar donated directly supports programs and services. Funded in part by the Kidney Car donation program, the foundation urges continued on pg.14

Stories: “Two years ago, I met a one-year-old baby named Ayden and his mother. He had kidney failure and was on dialysis ten hours a day. That broke my heart. That’s when I really became passionate about this. His mother had her hands full, and they had to hook him up to dialysis every night, and she had to stay up all night to make sure he was okay. After finding out he wasn’t on a transplant list we worked with a local doctor, got him on a list, and they ended up in Boston at the children’s hospital. They were searching for a live donor, because the chances of success are much better with a live donor. His aunt ended up being a match, so they went to Boston about a year and a half ago.

I was in Boston for a doctor’s appointment, and it was two days after Ayden had his transplant surgery. I asked the doctors if they would direct me to him, and I got to visit Ayden and his mom. He is doing incredibly well. Every year they stay involved and his mother is very passionate about this now.” The Future: Carbone has high hopes that the foundation will only grow bigger and better as the years go on. “I’m hoping that we can continue to grow financially and are able to bring back a doctor or a nurse on board full-time to help with different situations that arise. I’d also love to hire someone for educational purposes to perhaps allow me to be freed up to do some other work.” For more information on CEO Nannette Carbone and the Kidney Foundation, visit https://www.kidney.org/offices/nkf-central-newyork. t has been a long day and all you want to do is go home and relax. Nevertheless, the stress doesn’t end there you still have to cook dinner. There goes the relaxation! However, you can relieve that stress and let someone else prepare your dinner. A dinner with original recipe sauces and hand prepared especially for you. Where is such a place? Tucked on the corner of Route 57 and Wetzel road is Avicolli’s Restaurant. Avicolli’s has been around since the 80s offering up Italian cuisine that they create which will satisfy any palate. One thing you need to keep in mind is that whatever you chose to eat whether it is pizza or Chicken Parmesan you will not leave hungry! In fact, the portions are so plentiful you will most likely take some home. What better way to relax than in a warm and comfortable atmosphere and each dish is prepared with the freshest ingredients from traditional family recipes? Now, if the family is waiting, and they are hungry you have many options; pizza and wings are always a family favorite, Vodka, Tomato Basil, Cacciatore sauces and bread crumbs are readily available to add to your own pasta or try their fresh frozen entrées. Better yet, gather up the family and let them cook dinner for you while everyone relaxes in the newly remodeled restaurant. The only thing you have to do is decide from the many menu options what you want to eat. If you love rice, why not start your meal off with Arancini, that is made with creamy risotto, Italian meats and cheese hand rolled to perfection. Then it is fried to a golden brown and served in a plum tomato sauce.

Weathering theCity Tyler Weatherly

I

’m sinking into the faded cream booth across from my dad and uncle after inhaling a plate of oxtail with rice and peas when I see the text. Wiping my face as I slip out of the booth, I hurriedly say my good-byes before walking out of Miss Lilies on to Houston St. Returning to the honking cars and heavy shuffling feet, I have to orient myself in all the noise before following my phone map to the location she shared with me. It’s a quick three-minute walk to where she is, coolly waiting on the sidewalk with her boyfriend. Before that moment, I had never known Tyler Weatherly outside of Syracuse, outside of our Baldwinsville bubble. Although I got a sense of who she was in the city from her visit recaps during

22 wouny.com • March 2017

By: Amari D. Pollard lunchtime in high school and looking at her Instagram feed in college, that person was still a stranger to me. Up close, it was easy to tell there was a difference between the two. She always had style, but New York brought her to a different level. It wasn’t just the clothes. It was the way she accessorized them with her subtle confidence. She seemed happy, like the city had helped her fully grow into herself. “In New York City, nobody else cares. Everybody is caught up in their own thing,” explains Weatherly. She admits there’s freedom in that, in being able to just “do you” without securitization. She prefers the openness of the city, how it welcomes all different types of people and cultures; however, she says you have to leave Manhattan to find the real New York. When you trade in the noise, rudeness, and

superficiality for the outskirts, where there are houses with driveways, you’ll hear the true stories of New Yorkers. Being immersed in New York, and its culture is a very different experience from growing up in Baldwinsville, especially as a black girl. Weatherly always felt misunderstood, “just different” as she describes it, and didn’t like how everyone seemed so concerned with what everyone else was doing––even when it came to the clothes you were wearing. Weatherly remembers when she dressed up in high school people were very critical and would judge her based on what she wore. If she was “overdressed” it was equated to her being stuck up or pretentious. She says her experiences in middle school, and high school had a lot to do with her being drawn to the city.

Like most college experiences, Hofstra has come with its highs and lows: A frustrating college advisor, new friendships, appealing career opportunities, and bad cafeteria food. Right now Weatherly is experiencing one of those highs, having done what every college student hopes to do before graduation, secure a job. She knows what’s going to happen come May, there’s not much uncertainty there, which is why she’s hoping the spring semester goes by quickly so she can go on adulating. “I’m like, ‘Okay Hofstra; you already prepared me for this, just let me go,’” laughs Weatherly. “I’m just patiently waiting to be an adult.” It started off as a typical summer internship last June at Archibald London, then known as Archibald Optics, a luxury e-commerce company dedicated to bringing customers beautifully crafted products without the high prices. Weatherly says that every product is assembled through seeking out the world’s finest craftsmen and is handmade per order so the customer can receive them straight from the craftsman’s door. As a PR intern, her job involved establishing media contacts, structuring outreach emails, developing her writing voice, and of course providing administrative support. After her internship, the company asked her to continue working for them, and now as an official employee, her job is to help spearhead the brand transition from Archibald Optics to Archibald London and head all communications. She’s currently in contact with publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and GQ to talk of the brand change and how they plan to attack the luxury retail market in an innovative way.

Weatherly says the hardest part of her job is to avoid sounding like an infomercial and getting editors genuinely interested in what she’s proposing. It’s a lot of outreach, communications, and being told no or completely ignored. But she describes herself as one of the most persistent and sometimes annoying people, so she enjoys finding ways to get editors to say yes. “That’s why I think it’s a job that was made for me, because I’m very good at reading people,” says Weatherly. “Figuring out how people like to be talked to, even though it’s really a challenge, is fun at the same time because [that’s] when you learn more about people.”

FRESH FACES

“As soon as I heard about New York City when I was little, I was like, when I grow up, I’m going to live there,” says Weatherly. It wasn’t surprising when she left for New York after graduation. Weatherly was one of those people who acted on what she wanted; she didn’t wait for things to happen to her. That same attitude is what brought her to Hofstra, where she’s now finishing her senior year as a public relations major with a minor in dance.

You would imagine being so young and having such responsibility at a company would be a pretty big deal, but with everyone at Archibald London being relatively young Weatherly says it’s just normal. While it can be difficult having a job and being a full-time student, she manages to juggle both gracefully. All those years of blogging in high school and acting as her own PR representative, asking companies for samples and dealing with PR teams, trained her well. When it comes to the future and what kind of work, she would ultimately like to do, Weatherly says she’s not too concerned with what will be because things never quite pan out the way you imagine. As a kid, she was all about planning ahead, but now she’s focused on enjoying where she is and dealing with opportunities, if and when they present themselves. In the end, Weatherly’s going to do what she believes is the right thing to do and listen to the advice New York has given her: Do your thing. “You have to learn which voices are worth listening to and which ones aren’t,” she says, “and you also have to know that at the end of it all your voice is the most important one.”

Oh – she’s very active in her community: she’s a member of multiple associations, volunteers for The United Way and YWCA and is an adjunct professor at Mohawk Valley Community College. She is a monthly columnist for The New Hartford Town Crier and the Observer-Dispatch. She contributes monthly to the Oneida Country Bar Association and NY State Women Inc- Mohawk Valley Chapter Newsletter, and she is the author of DeClutter Your Life Now! Not to mention a wife and mother of three. Her favorite job? That was an easy one for Cabral. “Being the mom of three awesome kids [Shannon, 26, Tommy, 22 and Carly, 16] and wife to an amazing husband,” said Cabral. “My husband Dan is the love of my life. When I met him and noticed he kept

his sugar and flour in organized glass jars, I knew he was a keeper,” laughed Cabral. Cabral’s three children were not perfectly organized – and that’s ok, according to Cabral! When her kids were growing up, Cabral gave them room to be themselves, noting that it’s never a good idea to force kids to be organized. “Obviously, if a lack of organizational skills is interfering in your child’s life, then stepping in is a must. But some kids need a little chaos in order to be creative.” They always allowed the kids to have their own personal space in their bedrooms. “Kids have to want to be organized. It’s not something that should be forced. You have to pick your battles with kids, and this should not be one of them,” added Cabral. “We liked the public space in our home to be organized and neat. However, we did not insist upon perfect rooms,” said Cabral. “We allowed them their space to relax and be creative in their private space. It’s important to let kids be kids,” she said. Cabral and her team do not teach to strive for perfection. It’s never about perfection; that sets up someone for failure. Instead, staying neat and organized along with allowing for creativity is important. “Focus outward, not inward” ~ Deborah Cabral Cabral’s goals were not always focused on organization. She was born in Queens, NY and grew up in Long Island. She moved

to Utica in 1988 where she worked in the insurance industry for 26 years. Cabral stated, “In 2002, I was seriously injured in a car accident. After a difficult series of surgeries and rehab, I began to consider pursuing my dream. My passion was always helping people and organizing. So I decided to combine the two. My friends always welcomed my skills and in 2009, a good friend of mine gave me a gift of the use of a graphic designer to make a logo for my future business. The following year is when it all began!” Cabral Enterprises, LLC was born and now has four subsidiaries. “I’ve always said you have to have perseverance in order to be successful. Dream big and associate with good people,” insisted Cabral. “When I was healing after my accident, I realized I had a choice. Simply be in pain or motivate myself so that I can help others. I kept my focus outward, not inward,” added Cabral. “I remained proactive, not reactive,” stated Cabral. Cabral was quick to add that she could not accomplish all she does in a day if it were not for her team. “My long-time friend, Betsy Sinisgalli is the Director of Client Services and Organizing Supervisor for my company. She is a very big part of the organization and helps me be able to stay focused on growing the business,” said Cabral. “I love what I do because every day is different. From training, speaking, organizing and traveling – it’s never the

“Dream big and associate with good people” same,” she added. Cabral’s day begins at 6am, and typically she is asleep and rejuvenating herself by 10pm. “I need my eight hours of sleep. Some people don’t need that, but I find getting plenty of sleep helps me remain productive during the day.” “I became 1 of only 4,000 people in the country who are certified through the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO). I side with their code of ethics, policies and compliances,” she added. “Wouldn’t you want to be the absolute best you could be?” “I like to help people any way I can,” said Cabral. She works with clients through one-on-one consultations, community workshops, corporate training and wellness programs. Besides her weekly television show, she helps people from her regular appearance on NewsChannel 9’s talk show, Bridge Street. People tune in to hear her latest tip and to gather more ideas. Does decluttering really make a difference in our lives? Absolutely! Cabral’s team tells us that being disorganized can cause stress and can cost you money. Organization can save you money – and even help you make money. Learning how to be organized at home and work flows into other important areas where we can save money such as grocery shopping, food waste, etc. They inform us that decluttering helps us find the time to do things we want to do thus, improving the quality of our lives. But, it’s not as easy as it sounds…so if you want to get started and cause a change this year, Cabral and her team can show you how to change bad habits and create systems to be more productive. Cabral has proven that for every minute spent organizing, an hour is earned. It’s amazing how much time is wasted at work. According to Cabral and the Wall Street Journal, most employees waste an hour a day due to inefficient time management skills and/or a disorganized workspace. That certainly adds up! Cabral’s training sessions have proven to produce immediate increased productivity. When watching her shows, you can see her passion immediately! Her knowledge and know-how is quite something to see! Cabral earned her Bachelor’s degree from CW Post, Long Island University, and has taken many courses relating to the organizing, productivity and time management field. Also, Cabral holds a CPO® (Certified Professional Organizer Certification, the Golden Circle from the National Association of Professional Organizers), the Certificate of Study in Chronic Disorganization and is a Certified Photo Organizer. Meet:

Sherry Spann Allen Our March Featured Artist!

T

his month I am featuring Sherry Spann Allen, an Artist whose studio is at the Delvan Center in Syracuse, NY. When I entered the studio and looked around, the walls were adorned with her beautiful unique paintings and drawings. They are very clever. They are her. Many of these pieces have a sculptural quality to them because of a technique Sherry uses. Some of her works are layered pieces of wood that have slightly different levels. This is not only unique but creates shadows when in different lighting. Her studio has lots of plywood in buckets and boxes waiting and wanting their unusual shapes to be part of Sherry’s next brilliant conglomeration. Then, the moulding pastes are combined to just the perfect consistency. The paint is melded into the wonderful pasty textures to be applied to the shapes of wood and worked until they finally have a home and have transformed into an abstract composition. Though this process for Sherry must be very invigorat-

By: Audrey Levinson ing there is another part of her creations that adds more of what Sherry wishes to exude. That is movement. She loves to dance and ski downhill. The lines she uses create the character of her paintings and reflect a strong sense of these other passions. Her style is never stagnant, and this is one of the most alluring qualities when viewing any of her sculptural paintings. She believes in representing departures from the natural world. She sees shapes and textures in everything. Especially when taking a close-up look at the most ordinary of sights. This has always inspired her to depict abstract shapes and textures so up close, so in your face, but still with graceful lines, elegant shapes, and alluring colors. Sherry was an art teacher at Chittenango High School. She went the way many artists travel through life to make a steady income and afford a family. However, it’s very difficult to have the time to create, work, and perform your family duties every day. Something’s got to give! Sadly,

this is usually the time it takes to create your own art. Imagine how well it feels to retire. Everyday is Saturday. You’re done with the grind. The kids are grown up or near it, and you can now unleash that passion that you’ve been holding inside for 25+ years. In Sherry Spann Allen’s case, it was 32 years. Sherry was a graduate of Syracuse University, I am writing of this because she told me she took some painting classes from a professor of art, Michael Sickler. Michael challenged her in his painting class, and she also told me that even to this day she can hear his voice giving her his pearls of wisdom or trying to shake her out of her comfort zone in her head. It really is incredible to be inspired by a teacher throughout a life. She loved to teach and misses that part of the job. Two months after she retired from her teaching job, a small miracle happened. A lovely studio opened up in a place she had waited years for. So, in August she moved

into the Delvan Center on W. Fayette St. She expressed how she loves to be there working on her art or reading or doing whatever she wants. It’s her time. However, still she missed teaching so she is opening up her studio to begin teaching again. On Weds. Evenings you can join Art Club. If you are interested call her at (315) 434-9628 to get details. Sherry lives in Syracuse with her husband and has two grown sons. All four of them are artists. Sherry’s hope is to continue working on her artwork until she feels her paintings have matured enough to begin showing in galleries in the Central New York area and beyond.

hat moment when the smell of spring is finally in the air, and trees begin to bud is when we start thinking of all of our toys that we have stowed away over the winter. Now, it is just a matter of time until we can take out the boats, motorcycles, RVs and ATVs. However, in the meantime they are not going to be much fun if they are not working. Spring is the perfect time to check oil, tires and the engine. It will get you excited about the warmer days ahead, and when it finally does arrive, you do not have the worries of them not working. Equally, you need to have the proper insurance coverage for anything that may occur while in use. Your motorcycle coverage will benefit you and your accessories, so make sure that they too are in good condition. Your insurance plan can be customized to meet your needs. Insuring your ATV is very important since they have a high rate of theft. Remember to keep in mind if you want to ride it in state parks, it must be insured. Overall safety is paramount and even though they are a lot of fun you also need to protect yourself and others. Making sure you have the right coverage is important. Why deal with the hassles of hotels, airfare or rental cars, when you can take your RV and relax with your own personal amenities? You won’t miss a thing, and can see the beauty of your trip on the road to your destination. We will make your recreational experience easy with plenty of coverage to give you peace of mind. Can’t wait to ride the waves in your boat? It will not be long until you can get out on the water and enjoy the warm days of summer, so get your boat ready. Make sure the engine is running correctly, floating devices are not damaged, and other accessories are available. Enjoying all of your recreational items means that you are also suitably insured for an unexpected event. At GEICO, we want your summer to be safe and full of fun, so making sure that you have the right coverage is important. If you are looking to be fully covered and want to see if you can save money give us a call and let us give you a free no obligation quote. We have over eight agents who can sit with and review your coverage. Are you ready to see if you can save money? Stop in or call us today at 315-479-2886 or stop down at 2735 Erie Blvd. E. in Syracuse.

D’s Beauty Bar with Donna Adamo

We’re almost there! Spring weather is just around the corner, which for most of us, cannot come soon enough! We spring our clocks ahead March 12, which means more daylight to get outside and do the things we love to do. The dry air from being stuck inside over these long winter months can make our skin as dry as cardboard. Why? Humidity drops in the winter and makes the air cold and dry. The water in your skin evaporates more quickly, making your skin feel dry, tight, itchy and flaky, including your face. Yuk. In additional to drinking lots of water throughout the day, here are some solutions to get your skin spring-ready. Remember, your skin is the largest organ in your body, and needs attention.

Baby Products Aren’t Just For Babies

For many of us; soap dries out our skin and flowery body washes are itchy. In a moment of sheer dry skin desperation, I tried the purple bottle of Johnson’s Bedtime Baby Moisture Wash ($4.99). After spending a lot of money on many products over the years only to throw most out, I recommend anyone with dry skin immediately head over to the baby Isle. For the first time in years, I have relief. #noitch #makesmehappy

A Woman On A Mission

As I popped over to pick up some dry shampoo; I watched this well-dressed woman in her forties make a beeline to the Aveeno section where she picked up three remaining tubes of Aveeno’s Positively Ageless firming body lotion, leaving the row empty. Intrigued, I asked her why she liked the lotion. Saying it made her skin ‘come to life’, she offered me one of the tubes ($7.99 for 8 oz.) and told me I’d be back for more and to grab multiple tubes because they sell fast. I’m hooked, and she was right. The row is usually empty. The lightly fragrance lotion drenches your skin without making it feel wet or greasy. I keep one on the counter and one in the shower. It comes out a little fast, and you don’t need a lot. I take a warm (not hot, which dehydrates your skin even more) shower at night and lightly slather some on before bed. It makes my skin feel hydrated and smooth. I repeat the same routine in the morning and bonu points, the lotion seeps into my skin before getting dressed. I. Love. This. Stuff. I was so impressed; I tried and love Aveeno’s Clear Complexion Cream Cleanser facial product, also $7.99, which I use on my face every morning in the shower. (At night, I still love my Ponds Cleanser to remove my makeup.) Aveeno’s light exfoliate is a perfect morning cleanser and doesn’t dry my face. Again, you don’t need a lot. After using it, I apply a moisturizer and primer with SPF 15 before putting on my base makeup.

Rejuvenate At Home

Remember as teenagers we’d heat up a pan of water and put a towel over our head to clean our pores? Consider investing in a facial steamer (Ulta, Sephora) as a great option to open your pores and gives your skin a deep cleanse. I use mine once a week to clear out the toxins before applying a quality moisturizer. It’s a great option to an expensive facial (though $150 facials can be glorious and a great mother’s day gift). Just make sure you rinse out all the water and let it air dry so you don’t trap bacteria in the steamer. Stay beautiful and we’ll see you next month where I’ll introduce you to a colleague who’s inspired us all by losing 60 pounds in just 6 months!

Every Day Made Better By: Jason Cough

A

Hot Tub is more than a home-improvement project or great for entertaining; it can be part of your everyday life. A hot tub provides hydrotherapy and is an investment in your health and well-being. Discover the possibilities of having more energy, sleeping better, and strengthening family bonds. Hydrotherapy that becomes an everyday ritual will make for a better, fuller life for you as well as others around you. Me Time It is easy to make wellness a priority. Be at your best EVERY DAY.

Experience the physical benefits of hydrotherapy, like the relief of stress and tension from sore muscles. We all have stress in our daily lives relating to work, family, etc. Mental fatigue and tension can lead to frustration and insecurity. Stress can be very damaging. With the effects stress, the heart works harder. Breathing becomes more rapid and shallow, and digestion slows. Nearly every process of the body is degraded. Since we usually can’t avoid it, the key to dealing with stress is relieving it! When immersed in warm water, you can disconnect, decompress and emerge refreshed. Escape to the backyard hot tub, by yourself, and just soak the stress away. Pause and appreciate…starry nights, sunrises, changing leaves, falling snow, and more. Surrounded by nature, you can bask in the beauty we often take for granted. Quiet moments heighten senses and gain perspective.

Heat, buoyancy, and massage are three key elements in hydrotherapy that combine to create a therapeutic, stress-relieving environment. A soothing and relaxing soak in a hot tub can help counteract stress and its effects on the human body. It is a perfect antidote. Warm water massage stimulates the release of endorphins; the body’s natural “feel good” chemical. A Hot-Tub Hydrotherapy session will enhance your sense of well being, and leave you feeling fresh, clean, and ready to tackle life’s daily challenges. Sleep Better Are you getting the most out of your

By creating the sensation of weightlessness, the hot water and jet propulsion in a hot-tub leave you feeling both mentally and emotionally relaxed. Family Gathering Place When you spend time with loved ones, immersed in warm water, many great experiences can happen. The hot tub becomes a private and safe place where people can relax, let their guard down, and truly open up. Are family dinner gatherings that should happen regularly and becoming fewer and farther between? These days, we are all running in different directions, and sometimes we’re lucky if we see our spouse or kids for ½ hour before bedtime. Sleep improvement is promoted by the hot water’s relaxing properties. Buoyancy

Teen years can be exceptionally challenging, especially when it comes to conver-

sations between parents and kids. A hot water soak with the family without the distractions of TV, the Internet, and cell phones will allow your teen(s) to open up, letting you connect and understand each other better. Furthermore, a hot-tub may serve as a perfect place for teens to have some safe fun on the weekend nights. And what about when the kids go to bed? Rediscover the magic with your special someone by soaking in the warm waters of a hot tub. The intimate, relaxed atmosphere will make you forget about daily stress and allow the conversations to flow. Recreate the things that brought romance together in the first place! A hot tub gives families the perfect place to unwind and stay connected. The warm water and hydrotherapy of hot tubs relieve stress and soothe sore muscles, allowing families to refocus on what’s most important in their lives: each other. A Dream Is A Wish....

A dream is a wish your heart makes, when you’re fast asleep. In dreams, you can lose your heartache whatever you wish for… you keep.”. This song written by Al Hoffman and Mack David for the Disney film Cinderella personifies the message of the Make- A- Wish Foundation of Central New York. This prodigious organization serving 15 counties across Upstate New York has been making the dreams of young children with life-threatening illnesses come true for many years. WOUNY recently had the pleasure of chatting with Diane Kuppermann, President and CEO of organization since 1992. Diane enthusiastically shared how Make –A- Wish of CNY tirelessly works to offer hope for the lives of children suffering from life-threatening diseases. The Process Children are referred to Make- A-Wish by a parent, friend or medical profes-

By: Christine Vickers sional. “We like it when they are referred by a parent because then we know they have welcomed the organization into their lives,” Diane notes. The next step is determining medical eligibility; this is done by their physician. Eligible children are between the ages of 2 ½ to 18 and have a life-threatening medical condition. “ We are granting 100% of the eligible children referred to us, but we know we are not reaching all the children eligible, and we’d like to!” Diane shares. After a child has been deemed eligible, a team of wish grantors (trained Make –- Wish volunteers) something akin to fairy godmothers/godfathers meets with the child and family and helps them awaken their imagination to envision a wish that they may have been dreaming of. The end result is to create joy for the young child and their families also to infuse some magic in the process. “The wish experience can be a game

changer in the life of these children; this belief is our inspiration and guides everything we do,” said Diane. As illness has no boundaries or seasons, Make-A- Wish of CNY typically has about eighty to ninety wishes in progress throughout the year. Wishes themselves typically fall into to one of four categories: a wish to go somewhere-popular destinations includes Disney World & Hawaii; a wish to have something- ie; A swimming pool or a bedroom makeover; a wish to meet celebrities, professional athletes, teams, etc., John Cena is currently the most popular person to meet; a wish to give their church a new piano, toys for other kids in the hospital. The latter category is an emerging one that Diane and the staff at Make-a-Wish has seen grow over the past few years. Diane shares a powerful story of how one child in a local school district desired to have a new baseball field for his school. “The wish itself was beyond our scope, but we were able to

grant a new bull pen and batting cage and the school, so inspired by this young man’s selflessness and care for his school community, fast tracked their capital campaign and plans were made for his wish to come to fruition. “ Myths and Reality

is also not true as life threatening does not necessarily mean terminal as many children have life-threatening illnesses at a certain time in their lives and go on to live long lives. How can you help? With fifteen counties to serve and a staff of eight full-time employees and one part-time employee, Make-A-Wish relies heavily on the over two hundred and fifty volunteers and other organizations that help their mission. “We are not federally funded, and we need to raise what we spend, which typically runs about two million dollars a year. We have had groups collect money or toys for our Wish Closet, a toy chest of small toys that we may give to our kids and their sib-

Through her work out in the community, Diane expresses that she continues to be surprised regarding some misconceptions about this organization. First, is the idea that Make-A-Wish only grants wishes to kids with cancer. “We do grant a lot of wishes to children with cancer but any child who has a life-threatening illness/ syndrome is eligible.” Another misconception is that families have to show economic need. “As illness knows no socioeconomic boundaries this is absolutely not true,” Diane shares. “Wishes are not about money but about giving a child hope, helping them to feel more normal and to maybe change their story.” Many people believe that wishes are only granted to children who are terminally ill. This

lings. Other companies have put together back packs for our children to take on their wish trips. We are open to all ideas on how an individual or a company may want to help,” Diane says. Additionally, the organization can always use data entry experts, front desk greeters, gardeners, wish grantor volunteers and lots of assistance for special events. Make–a-Wish organizes several large events throughout the year and is the beneficiary of events sponsored by other organizations, including the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation and the Syracuse Auto Dealers Association. Diane gratefully acknowledges that Upstate New York is one of the most generous regions around the country in terms of supporting the dreams and wishes of the children and families that live in our hard-working communities. The Best Part of Family Law

ADOPTIONS

L

By: Jeffrey L. Drimer, Esq.

awyers who practice in the Family Court System are often involved in difficult and emotional situations involving custody, support, visitation and abuse. The effect on the operation of the law in the lives of the people in the Family Courts is almost without comparison in the legal profession. You can, however, ask any lawyer who practices in Family Court if there is an aspect of Family Law that brings them satisfaction, and they will uniformly say that they like to do “Adoptions”. Few matters that attorneys are involved in bring a greater sense of accomplishment than participating in the creation of a Family through adoption. In New York State, there are basically two types of Adoptions. These are private placement adoptions and agency adoptions. Private placement adoptions occur when the child being adopted has not been placed for adoption by the Department of Social Services or a Voluntary Authorized Adoption Agency. These adoptions are the result of agreements made between the birth parents and the adoptive parents. Agency adoptions refer to adoptions of children who are placed for adoption by the Department of Social Services or by an Adoption Agency. In these types of adoptions, the agencies will conduct a home study that is used to determine if the adoption is in the best interest of the child. The Adoption law also recognizes the possibility that a step-parent may want to adopt his or her spouse’s child from a previous marriage or relationship. In New York State, both of the biological parents must consent to a step-parent adoption. There is a limited set of circumstances when this is not the case. These circumstances can be explained to you by your attorney. After a step-parent, adoption is completed the adopting parent has full responsibility for the emotional, physical and financial needs of the child. Without attempting to explain the intricacies of LGBT relationships and adoptions it is sufficient to say that NYS fully recognizes the rights of members of the LGBT community to participate in and be successful in participating in all the previously mentioned types of adoptions. As always, counsel can be relied on to explain who must Petition to Adopt and who must consent to the Adoption. The importance of retaining an experienced attorney to help you through the adoption process cannot be too strongly recommended. An attorney that is a member of the American Academy of

Adoption Attorneys is a good starting point. The NYS Office of Children and Family Services have an on-line publication title, “What to Expect from an Adoption Attorney.” This is a good reference tool for the process of selecting counsel to help you adopt. As one might suspect the law and the Courts, themselves do not take the Adoption process casually. In some cases, background checks could involve the New York Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment, both national and state criminal history checks and clearance by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Home studies between private placement and agency adoptions may vary. The bottom line is always the same. . .will the adoptive child be safe, healthy, happy and given an opportunity to grow and thrive in a nurturing environment? In order to familiarize yourself with the Adoption process the Unified Court System in New York State provides the forms on line that you need to fill out and file and check lists that will tell you what information and documents you will need to provide your attorney. This will ultimately save you and your attorney time and expedite the process. You should also know that race, religion, fertility, gender preference with regard to the child, martial status, income, employment or education are not factors that can be used in denying your application to adopt. There are many issues involved in adoptions and lots of questions you should be asking. What are the costs in an adoption? What is a “contact” agreement? What is the Interstate Compact? What is the Federal Adoption Tax Credit? Are “consents” to adoptions’ binding? There is a lot to know that doesn’t come with filling out the Adoption forms and a lawyer who specializes in Adoption is your best source. There are many reasons why you should consider adoption as an alternative in your family life. You may want to just give a child a chance to have a family or a child may be in need. Just understanding that there are millions of children around the world and hundreds of thousands of children in the United States that don’t have permanent families may be enough motivation for you. The advantages to these children are too numerous to list here. So whether you want to adopt through a private placement or an agency adoption, one thing you can be sure. . . you and the child adopted will be infinitely blessed by the creation of this new family dynamic, and it will make your Lawyer happy!
