Life Lessons with Grandpa By Molly Lizzio, MA, LMFT

I

was in graduate school at the time and wrestling with what I felt to be one of the biggest decisions about my life. I had gone back and forth with every option and had even done my due diligence and made a pros and cons list. You know the kind of list I’m talking aboutthe ones that almost always lead down a dead-end road; because we all know most of the time the pros and cons have a way of evening themselves out. If they didn’t it wouldn’t be a tough decision, and the answer would be clear to begin with.

and knees, he becomes a zen master on me. I didn’t fully get it, but I chewed on it all week.

and we had the power to choose. Selfblame and regret sink in. We’re so hard on ourselves.

That weekend I went to a friend’s house who was also in the midsts of a major life decision. I decided to test out my grandpa advice on her “Whatever decision you make will be the right one for you” I told her, even if she made the biggest mistake ever it could still be the right path for her. As I began to explain it more and more, I totally and completely got it.

The advice was one of the greatest gifts I’ve ever received from my grandfather. It helped me not to magnify my “problems.” In the grand scheme of things, the decisions were never what actually matters. He helped me rest assured in the knowledge that I wouldn’t go wrong.

The truth was I could see myself walking down either path. At that point, I was ready to surrender and just accept whatever answer came my way. Luckily for me, I went to my grandfather’s house for lunch that week and laid everything out for him. My grandfather is known for being very direct man and tends to have concrete ideas about what he thinks is right or best. I highly doubt he’s ever shied away from letting someone know exactly what he thought. I was convinced my suffering would soon be over, one way or another, because he was about to tell me what the better option was.

I had definite opinions on what I felt my friend should do, or what I might do in her shoes rather. But in that moment, I took a step back and gave her room to feel safe in her own choice. By the way, the choice this friend made was actually against the opinion I might have given her that night. And looking back all these years later, I see how important that choice was to her life. I see how almost everything that has happened in her life, the wonderful blessings that came about all came because she followed her own choice. Had she done what I thought she should do she’d still be having a great life, just by virtue of who she is, however, she made a choice, and because it was hers alone, it was absolutely the right choice for her. She would have been ok either way.

Imagine my surprise when he didn’t give me a straight answer. I was shocked when he laid this on me: “Whatever decision you make will be the right one for you.” What now? Not only did it not accomplish my need to have a concrete answer, but it threw off the entire notion of who I thought he was. This was almost as confusing as my original quandary. I left that lunch a little frustrated and very confused. Every other issue in the world I’d always gotten this man’s two cents, and when I finally came begging on my hands

So much about life seems so out of our control that when we do have the power to choose it can feel overwhelming and ever important to get it right. So often when something out of our control doesn’t go right we comfort ourselves by saying, “everything happens for a reason” but we rarely offer ourselves the same grace and respect when something doesn’t go right,

I’ve never forgotten this piece of advice, and it’s something I shout from the rooftops when ever possible. The words have become deeply embedded in the way I live my life, and have become an even bigger part of my therapy practice. I like to believe my clients are the experts when we work together, because it’s their lives, we’re talking about. I never want to presume that I know more about their lives, their struggles, and their journey than they do. People often come to therapy looking for answers: “Is this normal?” “What would you do?” “Did I make the right decision?” And because I associate almost everything in my life with some kind of movie or TV reference, I always think of The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy kept thinking about getting to the Emerald City, and when she finally gets there what Glinda wants to know is: what has Dorothy learned? I can’t help but believe this is how life goes. It’s not so much getting to a certain point or place, but learning lessons, meeting people, and having experiences that will end up shaping who we are when we get there.

ADVISE It’s a delicate art to turn off the advice machine and not give people your humble opinion, especially when they’re’ directly asking for it. My grandfather knew exactly where that line was that day and helped me see the big picture. That it’s all about living an authentic life where you can do what is right for you. Since his passing this past April, I’ve come to realize this has been the legacy of his life. Living a life that is “right” for you, and trusting that is good enough. It’s some of the best advice I’ve ever gotten; from the smartest man, I’ve ever known. I was asking about a specific situation, and he was telling me about life.

BEAUTY

HAND REJUVENATION By: Beth Phillips, RPAC

M

ost of us have heard the saying, “If you want to know a woman’s age, look at her hands.”

Well, I say, ‘Not anymore’!! These days, people are doing more to camouflage their age. Many people exercise and take better care of their bodies. There are countless products and procedures that help to maintain a younger appearance. Neurotoxins (Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport), fillers, laser treatments and surgery are among the most common. It has become increasingly difficult to distinguish someone’s age. Your hands don’t have to give away your secrets anymore. There are several procedures aimed at giving the hands a more youthful look. This past year, Radiesse, a dermal filler, gained FDA approval for injection into the hand. Radiesse is made of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA), which is a substance found naturally in human bones. The CaHA is suspended in a gel carrier and when injected, provides immediate volume to the areas in which it is placed. It also stimulates collagen production in these areas for long-term improvement of the skin. Other fillers ( such as Juvederm or Restylane) are used in hands to provide the same result, but are used as an “off label” indication because it has not yet received FDA approval. Some physicians prefer fat grafting to the hand for a rejuvenating technique. Fat is taken from the body via liposuction. It is then re-injected into the hand. There are pros and cons to fat grafting over dermal fillers. Fat is more permanent, but when

placed, it is less reliable to tell how much will stay. Fat can feel lumpier and will change size if you have weight fluctuations. Either way, adding volume to the hand minimizes the appearance of blood vessels seen and makes skin look less wrinkled.

satisfying when performed by an experienced and properly trained professional. If you would like to learn more, contact CNY Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery 315-663-0112.

Another common procedure to rejuvenate hands is the use of lasers to smooth the pigmentation on the skin and eliminate dark spots. (Dark spots are often referred to as “liver spots” but truly have nothing to do with the liver!). Broad-band light (BBL) or intense pulsed light (IPL) are simple office-based procedures with minimal discomfort and virtually no downtime that will cause these spots to fade significantly or disappear completely. Chemical peels and micro needling procedures improve the overall skin texture and integrity. By decreasing the appearance of fine lines and aiding in stimulation of new collagen production, these are quick procedures that provide very nice results. Also worth mentioning, but much less commonly performed, are sclerotherapy and skin excision. Sclerotherapy is used to cause prominent and unsightly blood vessels to collapse. Skin excision can leave scars. As always, with your skin, use of sunscreens and limiting UV ray exposure to the affected areas will keep your rejuvenated hands looking more youthful for years to come. Be sure to know the credentials of anyone performing these procedures. The procedures discussed are extremely safe and WOUNY.COM • MAY 2016

Women and Sleep Apnea

W

By: Kelly Quinn, Director of Marketing and Public Relations, Franciscan Companies

hen people think of sleep apnea, they tend to think of people who snore loudly. And they tend to assume only men have sleep disorders. But that’s not the case. A surprising number of women are living with sleep apnea and the risk increases three times after menopause. “I was so exhausted after a day’s worth of work,” said Diane Scatena, patient at the Sleep Center at Oneida Healthcare. “I’d go home and sit in a chair and fall asleep. My memory was absent a lot of times and I would forget a lot of things. I wasn’t feeling well and I thought – now’s maybe the time to get tested.” Diane’s story is typical of many women. Their symptoms tend to be different than the so-called “typical” symptoms. “Rather than snoring or pauses in breathing, women might complain of insomnia,” said Lisa Parlato, RRT, manager of the Oneida and Carthage Sleep Centers. “They have more disturbed sleep. They

also report generalized fatigue and depression.” Other symptoms include dry mouth upon awakening, obesity, a sense of being overwhelmed, frequent nighttime urination, awakening from gasping or choking sensations, and hypertension. Following her sleep study, Diane started using the new Philips DreamWear CPAP equipment offered by Franciscan. There are no hard plastic parts to the mask; the tubing along the sides is made of a flexible silicone so it’s soft and comfortable along the patient’s cheeks. “This mask is so much softer,” she says. “We’ve heard nothing but positive feedback from our patients about how comfortable the DreamWear is,” says Tim Curtis, RRT, Respiratory Care Manager at Franciscan. The nasal mask sits under your nose – not in or over it – so it’s more comfortable and you can see well. The tubing also comes out of the top of the headpiece,

and swivels, instead of being fixed in front of the mask. This allows you to roll over in bed without getting caught up in tubes. “I had that issue; I would get tangled up,” said Diane. “I like to roll around a lot at night time. I would always tangle myself up in the hose. That doesn’t happen with the DreamWear. It’s just awesome. I love it.” Since undergoing a sleep study and starting CPAP therapy, Diane has noticed a tremendous improvement in her quality of life. “I felt refreshed,” she said. “I am much more alert. My memory and concentration are much better now.” Plus, the tension that existed in her household has ended…all because of a better night’s sleep. For more information about DreamWear and DreamStation, contact Franciscan Health Support at (315) 458-3200.

THE HEALING POWERS OF HOT TUBS

T

he healing properties of warm water immersion and massage have been celebrated and practiced for centuries. Relax... Relaxation may be one of the first reasons why people want to experience a hot tub. The effects of hydrotherapy are enhanced when used regularly. Stress is reduced naturally when the body is stimulated through massage, exercise and other means. These activities release neurotransmitters called endorphins, which assist the body in handling pain, stress and emotions. Warm water massage is one way to release endorphins, increasing pleasure and relieving stress. Headaches can be reduced as water jets in hot tubs and whirlpools help to dilate blood vessels, increasing blood flow. Scientific studies have also shown a balance between the autonomic nervous system and warm water therapy. This can lead to a strong sense of well-being and the ability to focus. Additionally, hot-tub therapy may alleviate mental anxiety. By taking time out to breathe deeply and refocus your mind while you soak, you may yield an energizing effect that will build from within, and you will better be able to face the mental and physical challenges of the day. Sleep may come faster and longer to those who take advantage of hydrotherapy.

WOUNY.COM MAY 2016

The National Sleep Foundation reports that soaking in a hot tub before bed can ease the transition into deeper, more comfortable sleep. The relaxing sensation you get from time spent soaking helps release tension and starts you on the path to a restful slumber. Once you’re immersed in warm water, your body’s temperature is raised, which increases blood circulation. When you leave the hot tub, your core temperature lowers slowly, signaling to the body that it’s time to sleep.

moving, can restore and preserve flexibility and strength,” which “protects joints against further damage, “it improves your coordination, endurance and your ability to perform daily tasks.” When jets are used, the massage relaxes muscles, ligaments and tendons and stimulates the release of endorphins— the body’s natural pain relief mechanism. The water’s buoyancy relieves stress on joints and muscles to encourage the range of motion, flexibility and movement.

Rejuvenate... If you have been in an accident, or had recent surgery, recovery time can be improved in a hot tub. Soaking, floating and using buoyancy to practice mobility exercises, along with stretching affected area(s) will allow skin and muscles to loosen and relax. The body naturally heals damaged areas through improved blood flow to injuries. The increased flow and oxygen will also speed the healing process. Medical professionals suggest warmth to increase circulation and assist healing. Hot tubs equipped with soothing jets, also assist cells and tissues to regenerate.

An Arthritis Foundation publication related to spas, pools and arthritis states, “Regular sessions also protect your joints from further damage.” For the millions of Americans with Arthritis and other joint problems, hot tubs provide relief by loosening muscles and reducing stiffness. Areas of the body which have suffered stress or trauma also respond well to hot water and massage jets. Additionally, those with chronic pain from Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue syndrome, Athletes, and accident victims also find relief from its use. Migraines, tendonitis, back and neck pain – all can be helped with the regular use of your hot tub.

Reinvigorate...Arthritis affects more than 70 million people in the USA alone. According to the Arthritis Foundation, time in a hot tub creates a helpful environment for relieving arthritis pain and stiffness. Using water exercise to “keep joints

BE CONFIDENT AT THE GYM! By: Jennifer Nastasi-Guzelak

ave you ever walked into a gym and felt so overwhelmed by all of the unfamiliar faces and complicated machinery that you just wanted to turn around and walk right back out? You want to be confident and look like you know what you’re doing, but you have no idea what equipment to use, classes to take, or where to begin. Going to the gym shouldn’t be an intimidating experience! Especially, if it’s a fitness facility that takes your health and fitness goals seriously. The staff should be friendly and more than willing to show you around, answer any questions you may have, and assist you in getting better acquainted with the equipment.

Remember, the more time you spend at the gym, the more comfortable you will be. The modern gym is a fantastic place to get fit, stay fit, and have fun while doing it! Try to remember that everyone gets nervous, embarrassed, intimidated and feels insecure from time to time. Yes, even the regulars. What’s most important is to always keep your goals in mind and remind yourself that as daunting as the first day may be, within a few visits you will probably be wondering why you were ever so worried about it in the first place. So, don’t put it off one more day! Join today, get acquainted with what’s inside, and get to work!

Here are a few things to keep in mind: •You have to remember that every person in the gym was at one time the new kid on the block. I’m sure they had their hang-ups from time to time too. •Understand that even if a person goes to the gym regularly, it doesn’t mean they know what they’re doing. In fact, more people than you realize don’t! You’d be surprised at how many gym patrons (yes, even the regulars) have had the same exercise routine since 1975, think they know it all, and use bad form and technique. •Know that all gyms vary slightly, and it is important that your gym environment is correctly matched to you. Do a little detective work by asking friends and co-workers which gyms they recommend or belong to. It’s always more comfortable to a join a gym where there are people or friends there that you already know. Hire a Personal Trainer Consider hiring a fitness professional! Champions Fitness Center has some of the best personal trainers in Central New York. Whoever you choose to work with can show you the dos and don’ts of working out, create a personalized program for you, ensure that you use proper form and technique, keep you inspired and keep track of your progress. Find a workout buddy A gym buddy keeps things fresh, fun and helps you stay motivated. Especially on the days where going home after work sounds better than going to the gym. Make sure your workout partner is enthusiastic, shares similar fitness goals, and challenges you to do your best. WOUNY.COM • MAY 2016

Becca’s Closet:

Giving Much More Than Formal Dresses Liverpool Chapter Provides Opportunities for Local Girls By: Kristen Penfield

S

ome girls are lucky. It’s the time for Junior Prom and Senior Ball. Dress shopping begins. Make-up tips from professionals. Jewelry will be considered for months, hair done by their favorite salon. Shoes have to be purchased regardless of cost; they’re the perfect shade! It is an extremely exciting event, and most girls look forward to it for a long time. However, not all girls are so lucky. There are many girls in every single school district that silently dread the season. Dresses and all the accoutrements are so expensive. Should they simply forgo the whole event because they know they simply cannot afford it? Rebecca Kirtman, a 16-your-old honor student from Florida launched Becca’s Closet, in which she single handedly gathered 250 prom dresses and accessories to give away to girls who could not afford to buy a new one. She helped hundreds of girls attend their prom and achieve their dream. Rebecca was a passionate, loving young lady who felt that no one should miss a high school event because of money. She noted the inequity and sought to change it. That was in 2001. Fifteen years later, much has changed. In 2003, Rebecca passed away in a tragic automobile accident. Today, her family and friends remember Becca for her love and friendship as well as for her contributions to the community. There are countless dedicated people throughout the world who have joined to provide opportunities for those who seek them. We are lucky to have a Liverpool, NY chapter of Becca’s Closet keeping the dream alive for so many of our local girls.

16

WOUNY.COM MAY 2016

Ann Oliver and Jeanne Cronise, who are both employed with the Liverpool School District, are the Chapter Leaders for the Liverpool Chapter of Becca’s Closet. Oliver said, “In 2006, then senior at Liverpool, Brittney LaRue, approached us to begin a chapter. She had read about Becca’s Closet and wanted to help girls in our area. Since we began our chapter and saw the amazing crowd it had gathered, we knew the need was there,” said Oliver. “We love helping girls with this opportunity who may not have attended the prom,” added Cronise.

“Little Things Can Make a Difference” – Rebecca Kirtman Oliver said, “We collect dresses all year and with the help of our student volunteers, we are able to bring the show on the road so it is easier for girls to view the dresses and accessories.” Currently, the Liverpool chapter has approximately 600 dresses to give to those who do not have the money to purchase a dress. Cronise claimed, “When I first began as a volunteer for Becca’s Closet and saw the girls so happy to have a dress and a chance, I thought I was in heaven. I knew immediately that this is what I wanted to do.” “Our goal is to provide formal wear to as many young women as possible each year,” said Oliver. “From 2007-2014, we have distributed gowns and formal dresses free to over 1500 girls from over 40 schools

throughout Upstate New York,” she added. Cronise said, “Our main focus is dresses, but we also offer jewelry, shoes, make up and even a seamstress.” Although the core mission of Becca’s Closet was to collect and distribute dresses to high school girls with the financial need. The goals have expanded to offer additional opportunities for deserving young people. Now, the foundation fund raises to award educational scholarships to recognize the exemplary efforts of young men and women who demonstrate Becca’s spirit of generosity in their own communities. Oliver and Cronise said that advertising is not needed. Many girls learn of their chapter through the word-of-mouth, andpublicized about their free dresses through radio, and news stations such as Time Warner Cable News, as well as formal wear stores like David’s Bridal and Vera Wang store. There are three give-aways each spring. Dress donations can be left at the main office of Liverpool High School, 4338 Wetzel Road, Liverpool, between 8am and 3pm or at the Liverpool Library, 310 Tulip Street, Liverpool, during their working hours. The next give-a-way is May 7th from 10am until 2pm at Liverpool High School, 4338 Wetzel Road, Liverpool! “We depend on donations from people within our community, retailers and manufacturers to keep our closet full,” said Oliver. “We accept donations of new and gently-worn dresses,” she added. They also accept donations of shoes, manicures, pedicures, gift cards for flowers, hair and makeup, jewelry and all the other “stuff ” that can make a girl’s night magical.

Ground Hog’s Day Nutrition Advice By Linda Quinn, MS, RDN

E

at a salad every day. You’ve heard it from me before. I’ve written it, I’ve faced booked it, tweeted it too. But, have you started this habit? If you haven’t, then I still have not done enough. I am so passionate about this because it’s so easy. Easier than pills, operations, special diets, hospital stays and illness. I know. You try to eat right, and then life gets into the way. You eat something you perceive to be “bad” then starve yourself and drink a beer. Whatever. No judgment. No guilt and certainly no shame. However, even if you have the worst health habits this side of Jim Gaffigan, you can still improve your health dramatically. Yes, DRAMATICALLY. It’s not all or nothing. It’s a green salad to the rescue. New insight from Dr. Michael Gregor, MD at www.nutritionfacts.org may have hit on more compelling evidence than ever that greens can save your life. Chlorophyll Makes Salads Green and Keeps Your DNA Clean. We all have carcinogens in our bodies. Carcinogens slip into our DNA strand and cause mutations. Over time, these mutations can eventually lead to cancer. However, chlorophyll found in dark-green vegetables has very strong interceptor molecules that can block those carcinogens and detoxify them. Research shows that by eating dark greens daily whether you smoke, drink or eat poorly, you can strengthen your body’s ability to inhibit toxins and cancer-causing agents. You can help your body to block the bad guys and get them out before the damage is done. Chlorophyll may also regenerate Coenyme Q10. This substance is an important factor in the energy system of all our cells. But, for people on statin drugs, with heart disease or certain cancers, Coenyme Q10 may be even more important. Some people are told to take supplements, but they may not be as effective as eating a salad a day. The body needs chlorophyll and sunlight to regenerate Coenyme Q10 even if you do take these supplements. Eating dark greens may be the most effective way to keep your cells running efficiently. This is especially important for the heart, liver and kidneys which require the most energy to run.

Dietary Diversity Pioneering research looking at plant phytochemicals shows that a diverse plant diet can infer greater protection throughout the body then eating large quantities of the same handful of fruits and vegetables’ week after week. There are different receptor proteins throughout the body that literally bind to certain fruits or vegetables. By eating a wider variety you can protect different areas of the colon, heart, lungs, breasts, etc. Apples have a specific targeting action on prostate cancer. Broccoli has a specific action on colon cancer. Garlic can decrease high blood pressure and so on. Every fruit and vegetable have a unique combination of phytochemicals and substances that make them distinctive to the role they play on the body. These advantages cannot be captured in a pill or drink. A Vitamin C pill cannot compete with the dozens of protective substances present in a whole orange. These substances create a synergistic effect for greater targeted protection. The Big Salad The art of combining an array of dark greens, beans, nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetable is the best way to ensure you are bolstering your cells and your health. Even though we think we eat well, a recent survey found that half of all vegetables served in this county were iceberg lettuce, frozen potatoes, fresh potatoes, potato chips and canned tomatoes. Mixing up your own fresh ingredients ensures that you are getting the variety you need and the flavor combinations you desire. Eating some raw foods daily also helps to feed our microbiome. Research is exploding concerning the importance of a healthy gut and prevention of disease. Try choosing different fruits and vegetables each shopping trip and adding them to your weekly diet. Choose produce when it comes in season for the optimum in taste and nutrition. Once you get started you will see this way of eating will not only make you healthier, you will feel better too. Hypnosis is Breaking Barriers and Bad Habits It’s Not What You Think By: Kristen Penfield

lternative Hypnosis. We have probably all heard of it, though we don’t truly know what it is, exactly. Perhaps the phrase, “you’re getting verrry sleepy” is involved? If that’s your definition, then it’s time to learn how hypnosis is getting attention, getting results and getting very popular. In demand, is Josh Kirnie, Master Hypnotist and Trainer of Neuro-Linguistics of Alternative Hypnosis and North Country Hypnosis where an influx of clients are seeing results for weight loss, smoke cessation and more throughout Syracuse and Watertown. Their hypnosis clinic is the oldest in Onondaga County, with over 43 years of experience. I met with Kirnie in his very welcoming, professional office, which boasts three treatment rooms and sees up to 25 clients per day. And that is only the Syracuse office.

Kirnie said that semantic shift plays a part in hypnosis. Accessing memory, exercise and other involved steps helps to bring about ability that every one of us has, it is simply a choice.

Kirnie added that in order for hypnosis to successfully work, the person must follow step-by-step instructions. Following instructions is the key, and knowing it will not be sabotaged at home. Full cooperation is essential. It has to be done right to diminish frustration and unsuccessful outcomes. “It’s All About the Smiles” The KEYS Program

In what seemed just a blink ago, I was in a hospital room helping my mother gently maneuver headphones on my father’s ears. My father’s journey with cancer was brief, and we knew he was nearing his time to leave us. We were just hoping music could help relax him, even just a little, and provide his body enough peace to be able to sleep after days of agitation and pain. Within an hour...he was asleep. As the nurses began asking what we had done to help calm and ease my father’s pain, we said, ‘We just played music.’ That was the life-changing moment that has brought us here 23 years later.” Colleen Bennett~Founder of the KEYS Program From that moment the KEYS Program was born to assist families going through the same difficult time, in memory of Colleen’s father. With her background in music education, Colleen and her husband, David set out on a personal journey to deliver music, joy and smiles to the bedside of children battling cancer and serious illnesses. “When we first started KEYS, David and I worked weekends for a motor sports touring series,” said Bennett. “We would leave early for race weekends, so we could visit children’s hospitals and camps in the cities near where we were racing. We would go room to room with my keyboard, big bag of instruments and silly clown glasses making music with the pediatric patients. The smiles upon the faces of those little warriors just lit up the room and all of our hearts!”

The KEYS Program operates on donations from individuals, corporate sponsors, foundations and from the proceeds from special events, like the upcoming CNY Kids Expo. “We are thrilled to have been selected one of the benefiting charities of this year’s CNY Kids Expo being held May 21st at the NYS Fairgrounds,” said Bennett. “Their vision of providing a family fun day for families in Central New York fits perfectly with our vision of creating smiles. We can’t wait to share our “Smile Experience” with the families attending the event.” Their wish is for a cure for cancer, but until then, Colleen and David’s mission is to improve the quality of life of the brave little superheros battling cancer through the healing power and joy of music. After all, it’s all about the smiles! For more information on how you can help create smiles like these, please visit their website at theKEYSprogram.org or call 315-363-6446. You can email Colleen directly at colleen@ thekeysprogram.org or swing by their Facebook page at www. facebook.com/KEYSprogram and twitter @TheKEYSProgram.

Today, the KEYS Program is a 501c3 nonprofit organization with an award-winning staff of music therapists, educators and specialists who provide patient support programs of bedside music, family respite days and sibling support programs to families who have a child battling cancer…all at no cost to the families. From its headquarters in Sherrill, KEYS has established partnerships with more than 44 children’s hospitals and camps here in Central New York and across the US, delivering over 80,000 smiles over the years. “We have been very fortunate to have the support of so many great friends in motor sports, especially the Tony Stewart Foundation,” said Bennett. “They believe in our mission and have been instrumental in helping us to create so many smiles over the years.”

Executive Director Sue Considine

Making Library Magic!

A

By: Tory Russo

group of elementary-aged kids practice using design software on a set of desktop computers linked to 3-D printers. Behind them, two rows of high-top tables and metal stools face a large projection screen used for classes, like a computer coding session. A laser cutter displaying some sample work, an etched wine glass and a rectangular, wooden plaque, rests next to a wall with wrenches, pliers, a triangle file, and other tools. A sign shaped like a word bubble warns: “Use your head! Some of these tools can be dangerous.” Around the room, plastic bins and boxes full of hot glue guns and jewelry supplies sit on shelves, waiting for someone to come along and create a toy robot or a beaded necklace. There are kits for knitting or crocheting, cake pans shaped like Elmo and The Little Mermaid, and fabric for the sewing machines that top the tables positioned in a giant U-shape. All of these resources reside in a large, open, collaborative room, the Fab Lab, tucked into the corner of a local library in Fayetteville. The Fab Lab and other makerspaces, are areas where people come together to create, innovate, and learn, align with the Computer Science for All Initiative that President Obama announced during this year’s State of the Union Address. His plans promote funding for computer science learning opportunities for elementary and middle schools, and aim to provide access to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses for all students. However, Fayetteville Free Library (FFL) has offered these types of experiences, as the first public library in the United States with a makerspace, since before the Fab Lab opened in

2013. In addition to this room, the library has resources for innovation in two more makerspaces, the Creation Lab, a digital media lab, and Little Makers, an area specifically designed for young children. “The technology is an important piece that is integrated into everything that we do,” says Sue Considine, executive director of FFL. “But at the same time we strive to maintain that simple principle that a public library is here for everyone.” So beyond these spaces, the library has areas where individuals from the community can relax in a a comfy chair, meet up in the community room, or enjoy a coffee from the café. Since Considine started with FFL in the early 2000s, she has been working to sync the services that the library has and those that the community wants and needs. She began by meeting with people, often times over tea or sometimes with wine, to talk about what they valued and what they found relevant to themselves and to their lives. She needed their ideas and their support to expand the library and its resources, but she also wanted to ensure she provided programs that would benefit and excite the local community. Several themes emerged from their answers, including access to excellent services and an atmosphere focused on family and general pride in the area. The current space, formerly home of the Stickley Furniture factory, satisfied that sense of nostalgia. They purchased the property in 2001, and after two years of renovations, FFL finally moved to the location in 2003. But the newly remodeled facility was not complete – and still isn’t. The site has undergone six rounds of renovations, with more in the works, to maintain the standard of excellence the community also expressed. WOUNY.COM • MAY 2016

Although the door serving as the main entrance welcomes visitors into a more traditional library setting, with row after row of shelves stocked with books, the services and resources at this library extend beyond just print publications. Considine explains that as part of its mission, FFL exists to provide equal, free, and open access to everyone in the community. Because that access looks different to each person, ranging from a quiet place to read to a green screen for producing a video, the library constantly adapts and expands what it offers. This helps it to succeed in its role of connecting community members with the information they need to work through different challenges or situations, like individuals trying to overcome the heroin and opioid epidemic happening in the City of Syracuse and its suburbs. A woman going through a marriage separation could find resources that help her to determine her rights. An unemployed person could work on a resume or prepare for an interview. While supplying this information requires research to understand emerging trends and technologies that effect and influence the community, it also presents opportunities to fill the voids. For example, after learning young girls make decisions, about whether or not they like STEM fields as early as third grade, the staff created Geek Girl Camp. Girls in third through fifth grade spend a week participating in STEM-related activities alongside women working in these fields, like engineers, computer coders, and pilots. The program has had several years of success and prompted a demand for a similar one for boys, which launches this summer. “The

26

public library can provide fun, interest-driven opportunities for kids, adults, all ages, the entire continuum to experience coding, robotics, engineering,” Considine says. “That’s the difference.” Unlike schools, where kids have rigorous curriculums and standardized tests, the library has the freedom to develop engaging programs that complement students’ courses. FFL also offers an array of programs for adults, like 3-D printmaking, 3-D design, and a laser cutter certification class. Through trial periods for new technology and piloting programs like the summer camps, the FFL staff figures out what matters to community. They also rely on direct input and suggestions from the patrons about what to add or improve. When they first opened the Fab Lab, and were looking for more items to include, they put large posters on the walls to allow patrons to choose what they wanted in the space. Surprisingly, many people expressed an interest in textile-related activities and projects, like sewing. So the staff put promotional flyers on the doors in the bathroom stalls spreading the message about potential opportunities for sewing. After receiving a lot of responses from people wanting to learn, as well as some offering to teach, and bag upon bags of donated fabric, the library purchased nine sewing machines. “Every community already has what it needs within the community,” Considine says. Operating with this community-led philosophy, based on the book The Abundant Community: Awakening the Power of Families and Neighborhoods by John McKnight and Peter Block, raises excitement and support for the library. It brings people together. To

connect them, the staff developed a form of three questions: what do you like to do, what are you passionate about, and are you willing to share it? The responses spanned interests from dog grooming to stained glass to virtual reality. The process allowed Considine and her staff to create and provide good services without demanding they have expertise in all of these areas. “Our time here on this earth is to create conditions, hopefully, that will make other people’s lives better and easier and more fulfilling,” Considine says. Her ambition to help and guide others came, in part, from growing up with an autistic brother. She developed her skills and interest in this realm of assisting others while working as a lobbyist in Albany. When she came back to Syracuse, after her and her husband decided to start a family, she worked as a director at a small library down the street from where she grew up. Two years later, she took the executive director position with FFL, which was then located in a small house. Her office was a converted bathroom, and her feet rested on plywood where the toilet used to be. But that was more than a decade ago. Now, she sits sandwiched between two large desks in a bright office with shelves full of pictures and inspiration quotes, and awards lining her wall. She won the NYLA Mary Bobinski Innovative Public Library Director award in 2012, and the Library Journal Move & Shaker and the WCNY Women Who Make America awards in 2013. That year she was also selected as a White House “Champion of Change.” Last year, she received the Not for Profit Excellence award from the Central NY Business Journal. Most recently, she won the Ameri-

can Library Association and Public Library Association Charlie Robinson Award, honoring innovation and excellence. Considine jokes that they will never finish renovating the facility. Future plans include extending the wooden porch on the front of the building and adding an entrance for people to access the makerspaces outside of regular library hours. On the other side of the Fab Lab, exists another room that matches the lab in size but remains unfinished. While Considine says that the staff has a lot of ideas for the space, based on areas where the community has expressed interest, like music and more resources for digital creation, she can’t confirm or deny any projects. All she says is that there will be more space for more makings, and ultimately, more collaborating. “The library’s not about a building, not about a physical space, not about a makerspace,” Considine says. “It’s about being that platform in center of the community for people to come together and create.”

CLEANING ALTERNATIVES

S

By: Leah Wolf

pring has sprung, and with it comes dust bunnies and cabinet grime that you haven’t noticed since last year. Instead of using harmful chemicals to make your house spotless again, here are some holistic alternatives. Most cleaning agents are dangerous to our bodies and are expensive. Our feet absorb nearly everything. How many times have you walked across wet, polished floors? Every time you do, some of the ingredients of the polish get absorbed into your body. Certain cleaning agents are also damaging to the environment. The more natural you can keep your cleaning supplies, the better on the earth. Luckily, there are better ways to have a clean house.

P

ollen is everywhere and when you are outside it attaches itself to your clothing and can become airborne inside of your home. Warmer weather means running eyes and stuffy noses for many of us. Why would we want to suffer when we go to bed? Mattresses made of synthetics that attract pollens from internal and external sources can be uncomfortable. A bad day outside with all the pollen and allergens will follow you to your bed, making a good nights sleep impossible. If you have severe allergies, synthetics and chemicals that may be used to make mattresses can enhance allergic reactions. There are mattresses that are natural and can make your night much more restful.

One of the most diverse cleaning agents is something that nearly everyone will have in their Pantry: vinegar. This magic liquid can do anything from removing hard water buildup to disinfecting your shower to hiding scratches in wood. Please note that vinegar usually has to be combined with some other substance before it can be used, although these substances are generally holistic as well.

Did you know that you can purchase mattresses made of natural wools, cottons and natural synthetics?

To make wood look new, combine iodine and vinegar, and paint on the scratch. Darker wood requires more iodine, and lighter needs more vinegar. As for hard water, spraying vinegar onto the area, letting it set, and then wiping it away will do the trick. Uses for vinegar are virtually limitless, and include cleaning all types of floors. Mixing a half cup white vinegar with one teaspoon vegetable oil and one cup water will return the shine to wood floors.

Eco-friendly Wool is Grown by sheep-friendly herders. It is a fantastic insulator, and the wool helps you sleep warm during the winter and cool throughout the summer. This will keep you comfortable all year long.

Baking soda is another alternative that does not have any harmful side effects. Combining two parts baking soda and one part vegetable oil can take care of any cabinet gunk that you have without the lingering scent of Pine Sol. Is it also kinder to your hands.

Organic Cotton is chemical free and is a plus for those who don’t want to expose themselves to chemicals. This material also reduces the world’s reliance on the harsh chemicals and pesticides that increase our carbon footprint and contribute to the world’s pollution.

All-natural Latex is the most natural latex and comes from a rubber tree much the same way syrup comes from a Maple. The material is sustainable and reduces our reliance on the petrol-products that is found in memory foams. It is also antimicrobial and dust mite resistant.

By: Christine Vickers

here are thousands of online sites, blogs and such, all promising kid friendly activities, advice for mom’s or simply light reading after a long day in the trenches. The Syracuse Moms Blog is different. It is tailor-made for Upstate New York mothers. A recent sampling of blog post titles on Facebook includes; Best things to do in and around Syracuse this Weekend,Finding Strength in Sadness and Why I keep a bottle of Wine on my Nightstand. Kym Fox and her team of twenty-four contributing mom bloggers offer a collaborative community that will interest and assist you in the navigating the joyous roller-coaster ride that is motherhood. A Massachusetts native, Kym, her husband TJ, (originally from Oswego) and fifteen month-old daughter Michaela moved to the Syracuse area last year after traveling around the country and Europe for T.J.’s professional hockey career. Kym‘s interest in blogging began several years ago when TJ was playing hockey in Germany. “We lived there for two years and there was a six-hour time difference between our families and us; it became a means to communicate,” explains Kym.

The go-to resource for raising a family in Central New York Fast-forward to her arrival in Central New York, Kym began researching Mom’s groups to join and this opportunity seemingly just fell into her lap. “ I realized as I was doing my research that Syracuse was not part of the City Moms Blog network, a network of over sixty sister blog sites representing cities around the country. I was excited to bring the network and this blog here! ” She notes that the national network helped her to get the site up and running with the basic format that all the sister sites share. The Syracuse Moms Blog also shares relevant posts that its sister sites publish in addition to publishing their own local content approximately five times a week. In December of 2015, Kym put out a call for local moms who would be interested in becoming contributing writers on her team. She received an excellent response and selected twenty-four writers for this new venture. “I love my team! They are incredible women who represent a wide variety of situations. We have a single mom, a stay at home mom, a working mother, a mother of multiples, a special needs parent, older first-time mothers, women with

college-age children who are facing an empty nest…and more. Every special kind of mother is here, and they bring wonderful perspectives and experiences that they are eager to share with others,” Kym says. Kym’s immediate goal for the Blog is to build up its Facebook community, now over 6,000 readers strong. “ Facebook is how we are spreading most of our information right now, as Moms are always on their phone looking things up, planning, etc., “ said Kym. “Over the summer, we will be looking forward to bringing the community off-line by setting up play dates, mom’s night out and other events. The plan is to have “Mombassadors” from the area take the lead in scheduling these outings. A mom’s night at a local winery is one example of an event currently in the works.” Being a relative newcomer to the area, Kym is eager to explore these opportunities herself. “We just got our Zoo pass and have loved visiting the Rosamond Gifford Zoo! We’ve done hockey games this winter and are looking forward to the State Fair this summer. We live in the Radisson section of Baldwinsville, and enjoy walking the trails there and being outside taking in the area’s natural beauty.” Sometimes it takes an outsider to bring people together. Through the creation of this informative resource, Kym Fox has taken a leadership role in informing and empowering women across Central New York. The continuum of care for mom and baby continues post-delivery back in Cazenovia. “We take care of people through all of life’s stages,” said Edwards. “We get to know them and their family. There’s an important relationship.” In instances of higher risk medical issues requiring hospital or specialist attention, St. Joseph’s doctors ensure that patients get to the people or places they need to.

For many journeying all the way to Syracuse just for a doctor’s appointment can be quite the burden. When it comes to quality healthcare, who says you can’t go home? Located at 132 ½ Albany Street in Cazenovia, St. Joseph’s Physicians, The Heritage Group, is what medical director Dr. Gerry Edwards calls a “medical home.” At St. Joseph’s Physicians, patients experience a “personalized” patient-centered approach to their care in an environment that supports the patient’s long-term healthcare needs. “Family medicine physicians, our goal is to give people access when they need it and to take care of as much as we can here so they don’t need to travel.”

The five Cazenovia physicians take great solace in being able to care for the elderly and helping families care for their loved ones at home as well as help to organize services that are needed for instance, like Hospice care.

The practice’s obstetric services are a unique feature that’s “about as close to home as you can get.” The Cazenovia physicians are able to care for women during their pregnancy in Cazenovia and then deliver at St. Joseph’s Hospital’s modern labor

However, the locality of St. Joseph’s Physicians, The Heritage Group is what truly makes the practice unique. “It’s about being a part of the community,” said Edwards. “For many of our providers and staff, Cazenovia or Madison County is

our home and we are honored to care for our neighbors. “. Always accepting new patients, the “family at St. Joseph’s” continues to grow caring for patients from surrounding counties including Cortland and Oneida. The Heritage Group is a combined practice of St Joseph’s Family medicine Residency faculty at St. Joseph’s Hospital, with an office in Fayetteville and Cazenovia. St. Joseph’s Physicians Cazenovia Office is open from Monday, 8:30am to 7:30pm and 8:30am to 4:30pm Tuesday through Friday. The Heritage Group’s Fayetteville office is open Tuesday and Wednesday until 7:30 and Saturday mornings for urgent health care needs. To schedule an appointment, call 655-8171. Building Dreams

W

hat I love most about being a builder representative for Smolen Homes is sitting down and listening to clients as they describe their dream home. Every client is different, and they all have different lifestyles that need to be taken into consideration when contemplating floor plans and home designs. It’s very gratifying to help those dreams come true. I began my real estate career after raising our three children. My husband had a career that kept him from home a lot. I was the stay at home parent, and I loved it. However, I always thought real estate was very interesting and knew someday I’d end up realizing my dream of being a real estate agent. I have since graduated from Graduate Realtor Institute, earned my Associate Brokers License and was the top sales agent in our office for 2015. When we sit down with those looking forward to building a new home, we like to put them at ease and make it as simple and fun as possible. Most of our clients already have a lot or land or know just where they plan to build. I have developed a client’s guide to building which we give to all our clients. The first place to start, of course, is style and floor plans. What type of style appeals to them? How much space do they need? Smolen Homes is a custom builder, and will make any changes necessary to whatever plan someone finds. We then send the plan to the architect, and it’s not unusual that, when it comes back there are changes to be made. We are happy to accommodate!

Parade of Homes. Come see us at 131 Crane Landing, Manlius. Smolen Homes has won Favorite Home two years in a row. We have high expectations for this year as well! If you would like more information or see view other homes please contact me 315-457-3356 x133 pwoodford@ kirnan.com

REALTOR OF THE MONTH

Peggy Ann Woodford

When we have a finalized plan, it’s time to work on the financing. Will there need to be a construction loan? Is there a home that needs to be sold first? Perhaps it’s a deal to be done with cash. The bank will want to see the plans and specifications. We are happy to assist with finding the right financing for each client, and their unique situation. Then there are decisions to be made regarding windows, siding, etc. Our client guide helps with the order of decisions to be made and where to go to find what’s needed. John Smolen is wonderful to work with as our clients are given his cell phone as well as mine. Anytime they need help, or have concerns. We are only a text or phone call away. We also work with a great interior designer, Tory Mercer of Window Seat Designs, who can make things much easier when it comes to finishes. The process for building is different than the process of finding a resale, but I enjoy and stay active in both aspects of real estate. I love my job because every day, there is something different, and I love the opportunity to meet new people all the time. We’re busy now preparing for the 2016 WOUNY.COM • MAY 2016

INSURANCE

GET BUNDLED

Insurance, a word we hate to hear but one that is necessary. Not only is it required by law, but also important in protecting you, your family, and assets. We tend to frown at the costs however should you suffer a loss it is there to help you through it. There are many ways to decrease the costs of your insurance. For instance if you take a defensive driving course you can get a discount on your auto insurance. Security devices can also decrease your premium. Keep your driving record clean. If you get a ticket whether it is a traffic violation or parking ticket, take care of it right away. We tend to ignore these things and end up getting a suspended license. That will affect your insurance rating. If you own a home, discounts apply for security systems. Check with your agent to find out what additional items can help you to decrease your premium. Bundling: Bundling your coverage is a another way to group all of the insuance that you have. So, now that you have all of the things that you want, a house, boat, car, or motorcycle, they will all need to be insured. Who wants to have different policies for everything they have? Not many! One or two policies should be all that you need. When you choose to insure under one company, you can bundle all of your coverage and save some money. Also when you keep all of your policies with one company it also decreases paperwork, and it is with someone you are already comfortable with. We also look at the bottom line when getting a quote, you should not cut coverage for a lesser price. You may need that coverage should you have loss.

Added Value: We think that basic coverages will take care of our insurance needs, however keep in mind if someone is injured and you are at fault and if you do not have enough coverage, you could be personally liable. That means when your insurance is exhausted they could persue you personally. It is important that when you meet with an insurance agent that you review all of your policy limits to have the best coverage to keep your exposure limited. In addition, if you have multiple items such as a house, car, boat, etc., Umbrella policies will cover you for anything in excess of your policy limits. Limitations for Umbrella policies are also something you should discuss with your agent. This adds extra protection for you and your assets. Additional Discounts: There are many discounts that you may qualify to receive. Some discounts can apply if you are in the Military, Veteran, Government worker, student reductions and more. The best way to find out is call for a quote and see how you can possibly save more money. Quotes are free, there is no obligation and you just may be able to save more money for the things you want. If you would like to find out more about the many discounts that we offer, call or visit us at GEICO. We have a local office to serve you and answer all of your insurance questions. ongratulations. . . You have found the house of your dreams, and you are going to buy it for more money (in most cases) than you have ever spent on anything in your whole life. You are also about to sign a contract with more words in it that you don’t understand than anything else you ever signed and then go out and borrow the money to do it. Does that sound about right? Do you need help? . . Someone on our side to help you do this? The answer is simply “Yes.” In New York State, you need an experienced Real Estate attorney. You may question this necessity. Your broker explained the contract to you. The Mortgage Loan Officer explained the Mortgage to you. The bank will have lawyers, and they wouldn’t let you sign anything you shouldn’t. . . right? Remember now, your broker is paid only if the deal closes and the payment comes (in most cases) from the Seller’s proceeds. The Mortgage brokers or loan officer works for the Bank as do their attorneys. The vast majority of these people are dedicated professionals who do a fine job, but they don’t work for you. The only person from the day you sign the Purchase Offer to the day of the closing that is in your corner and yours alone is your Real Estate lawyer. That lawyer’s job will be divided into two columns the things he will do and the things you hope he will not have to do. On the positive side, he or she will review the contract on your behalf and explain it to you Your Real Estate lawyer is your first line of defense, to make sure your rights and interests are protected from the very beginning and to make sure you know your rights and obligations of the contract. Your attorney will help you when you make your mortgage application by ex-

By: Jeffrey Lee Drimer, Esq. plaining to you if necessary the mortgage application process, the documents you submit and ultimately advise you on the signing of the mortgage commitment letter. After your contract is signed, and your financing is in place your attorney will obtain from the Seller’s counsel those documents necessary to assure you the Seller is conveying to you a clean title to the property that will ensure you that you have not invested all your money and efforts in a property someone else has an interest in. Your attorney will either personally or through a Title Insurance, Company provides you with a title insurance policy which will be a requirement of your Mortgage lender. After the title insurance is in place your attorney will work with the Bank’s attorneys and the Seller’s attorney to schedule a closing that conforms to you work and moving schedule. Your Real Estate attorney will then confirm the amount of money you need to close the transaction; review the closing costs to make sure they are appropriate and conform to all previous disclosures. And finally at the closing you will be asked (told) to sign multiple copies of the documents that might as well be a Phone Book. Your Real Estate attorney will know what they are and will explain them to you in a way that you will understand and appreciate. If you have the right Real Estate lawyer when you buy your house you should leave the closing confident in the fact that you own your home free and clear; got exactly what you were supposed to in the condition it was supposed to be in; paid the exact amount (to the penny) that

you should have and signed documents that obligated you to a large indebtedness that were appropriate and correct in all respects, and that you understood them because you had that good judgment to hire a lawyer to help you through the closing process. And now for the what if ’s? Those are the things you retain a lawyer for and hope you don’t need him for. I’ll make this simple: What if:

IN HOME CLOSINGS

Be Advised

1.The Seller blatantly breaches the contract. 2. There is a defect in the house. 3. A defect in the title. 4. What if there is an unapproved addition to the house. 5. You discover that you can’t put a fence or a pool on the property like you intended. 6. What if you discover hazards on the property. 7. The property is damaged prior to closing. 8. The Bank/Underwriter is unresponsive/ difficult or complicated. Where are you going to turn? Who is there for you when you need problem resolution and negotiation? Yes you guessed it, your Real Estate lawyer won’t be standing behind you, or next to you but out front fighting for you. And you’ll be glad he or she is there. Are You Ready For Your Dream Vacation? Final

Pompeii

Mount Vesuvius

T

By: Mary McCandless Story Photography

Artifacts

his month I am sharing the final leg of our trip, Pompeii. As you learned from part two in the April issue, we saw all the sites of Rome. Our travel package also included a day trip to Naples and Pompeii. The morning of this trip was early. We had to be at the tour office at seven am, so we headed out about six thirty. The tour office was close to our hotel so it was a short walk. We had a small comfortable bus with about twenty-five people. The first leg of the tour took us to the port of Naples where we could view the city and bay area. We then boarded and headed to Pompeii where we had our five-course Italian lunch and headed over to the ruins. Pompeii is situated atop a hill with Mt. Vesuvius dominating the scenery. One can only imagine what the people of this city thought when they heard the first rumbles of the volcano. Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79AD destroyed, Pompeii, Herculaneum and other villas in the surrounding area. Mount Vesuvius strewn ash that was about 15 feet deep, and It engulfed the city, with its intense heat it killing every person and animal in its path. In 1748, excavation began at Pompeii, which revealed remnants of the city that was preserved because of the deep ash keeping air and water from its remains. Our trip allowed us to tour a quarter of the city. To view the city in its entirety would take about a week. We did, however, get to walk the streets, see the House of Faun, the Temple of Apollo and more. We could also take some of the ash as a souvenir, view the brick ovens used for cooking, bath houses and rooms that were lived in. It was breath taking and yet disconcerting to know that over 20,000 lost their lives that fateful day. I hope that you enjoy some of the images that I captured and hope that you have the opportunity to one day visit this incredible site. Enjoy!

Trip Tips 1.Frequent-flyer miles are critical. Save them, get them gifted, or you can even buy some. 2. If you are traveling abroad, get your money from your bank. There are usually no surcharges if you purchase over $1,000. It is convenient, and you can pick it up at your bank. 3. Have chargers, adapters and charger packs. 4. Check the weather. Pack accordingly and roll up your clothing for space. Pack comfortable shoes.

Human Remains

Temple of Apollo

5. Bring snacks trips are long and dinner hours differ from place to place. 6. If you have layover flights check to see if you can push your flight out to the next day to explore the city your layover is in. 7. Pick the brains of people who may have visited your destination in the past so that you can find great places to shop and eat. Don’t forget to borrow chargers too. 8. Download a Textfree and Talk app to your phone, or use Facebook or Facetime to make FREE calls back home. 9. Travel off season- Weather is still great, less crowds, better hotel prices and tour packages.

Scenes of the City

10. Bring a language book for dummies to speak the language of the land. People will respect your efforts and it will show respect. 11. Carry your money close to you. I had a passport carrier that allowed me to put my money in it too. I wore it around my neck, under my blouse and had a purse as a diversion. I am not saying that you will be robbed, we were absolutely fine. I am just saying better safe than sorry. There are pick pockets where ever you go. 12. We used The Travel Store to book our Hotel, Tours and Transfers in England and Italy. They did a fabulous job and it was all under $1,000. for two people.

alt Disney World is affectionately known to guests as the “Happiest Place on Earth.” Indeed, it has been for millions of people over the last 40+ years. It certainly can still be magical for young and old alike in 2016, IF you are properly prepared. Walt Disney World has advanced technologically just like every other part of the world, and it can be quite complicated and overwhelming. My hope is to help people have a stress-free magical experience so you do not have to get your own B.A. degree in Disney 101. I can provide that for you! There are three main components that are extremely important to follow when considering visiting the “Home of the Mouse.” First, I highly recommend staying in a Walt Disney World resort. I have heard people say all the time, “I can get a cheaper hotel off-site and the hotel has complementary shuttle service.” This isn’t completely true. The off-site hotels have shuttles that only operate a few times a day and cannot get anywhere near a theme park entrance. Walt Disney World resorts offer free transportation to all theme parks, and their buses run every 15 to 20 minutes, all day and all night long. My clients with young children can take them back to the resort for a nap at any time. Guests who are trying to save a buck can stay at a value resort, and Walt Disney World resort guests can take advantage of numerous other perks such as: Disney’s Magical Express which is complementary from Orlando International Airport and the return trip too, the option to purchase a dining plan which will save up to 20% off food, take advantage of extra magic hours in a theme park, and FastPass+ can be done 60 days in advance. People staying off-site have to wait until 30 days in advance. The number of FastPass+ times are

limited per day. It is possible to get shut out of certain experiences and have to wait in long lines with the other naive guests as my clients walk by in the FastPass+ line with a smile from ear to ear! FastPass+ is the 2nd component to master, and it is free. Families are able to make three FastPass+ selections per day per person. This will give the families a time window of an hour to arrive in the FastPass+ line with little to no wait for the chosen FastPass+ attraction. Some people say, “I don’t have to do that. I will get this done when I arrive in the theme parks.” However, people who wait until then to find out that many attractions will have no FastPass+ times available and will have to experience the dreaded standby line. During the busiest times during the day, the standby line is another name for the human cattle herding line and when it looks like the end is near, nope, there is a hidden room with hundreds more waiting!

VACATIONS

Don’t Be Left In The Crowd At WALT DISNEY WORLD My name is Jeffrey Merola, and I am a travel agent exclusive to Disney, Authorized Disney Vacation Planner, have written seven Walt Disney World books, and been on Disney’s property over 220 days! Contact me to book your trip and receive free vacation planning! I will give you a copy of my book, which includes more than 280 tips to save you time and money, and you will be in direct contact with me before and during your trip! My website is www.mousevacationplanning. com and my email is jmerola@mousevacationplanning.com.

The 3rd component is to make dining reservations beginning 180 days in advance. I am sure some people are saying, “I have no idea where I want to eat in 6 months!” However, if this is not accomplished, then the family will get shut out of many of the most popular restaurants. Family members will be glaring and tweeting to all their followers with the hash tag #thisvacationstinks since the Chef Mickey’s hostess said, “We are all booked tonight.” Dining reservations can be made at locations such as: Cinderella’s Royal Table, Be Our Guest, Cape May, Chef Mickey’s, Crystal Palace, Tutto Italia, Tusker House, and T-Rex to name a few. When these are experienced everyone in the family will be tweeting #bestvacationever!

IN ART

Suzanne Masters S

uzanne Masters lives up to her last name. She has mastered many venues as an artist and spiritual human being. She has a visually intense way of combining the two when she paints but whether the viewer gets it or not is not what Suzanne is all about. She creates for herself. Suzanne has understandings of the world (as do others) that lead her into an alternative way to paint. She is multi talented, and It is difficult to just focus on her art. I don’t want this to sound like a resume, but I find it interesting that she can juggle all these balls into the air and have them come down on canvas together.

By: Audrey Levinson (tapping). Her experience and many interests come full circle in the book she is writing called “Painting your way home” to explain the process(es) of being able to return to that one white light where every person begins. The one element that has woven itself through all of this is her need to express herself in the visual arts.

Suzanne grew up in Syracuse, the daughter of two disabled parents. She was recognized and encouraged by her first-grade teacher as having artistic/ imaginative talent. She always loved the smell of paint and the colors and could not wait to create something. Suzanne remembers as a young girl taking a blanket outside, laying on the grass coloring and painting. She would say to her mother when the house was full of people “can I go up to her room and just paint?” She would say yes. Suzanne went on to earn her degree in Art at Syracuse University. Her career began with the Syracuse School district, she was a part of the “Say Yes” after-school program. She has made her way as a Reiki Master, Spiritual reader, Gallery Owner, Painting Contractor (35 years), and is a teacher of workshops both in alternative emotional support strategies and art. Suzanne also does henna, spirit painting, and EFT

WOUNY.COM MAY 2016

With her beautiful long, gray curly locks, Suzanne tells me she is really introverted, the shy one who does the amazing work

in the back of the show, but when she paints her voice is big. She feels that is her best tool for communication. She communicates her feelings through color in her paintings. Her artwork is abstract because she learned at Syracuse University how to create texture, pattern, and treat fabrics through the textile program. She said that she used to work very tight. Drawing and drawing small things until she fell in love with the techniques she learned in her classes at SU. This opened a whole world to her in layering and texturing her paintings. She wants contrast to be evident in her paintings to reflect how life has its many contrasts. She uses hard edges next to modulated planes of cloudy color. She also loves painting with color that is in contrast with each other, such as, a light green-blue with a dark shimmery copper stripe down the side. She understands the history of reflecting life and how the arts commonly have similar aesthetics behind it that correlate with each other. Think of the art, music, dance, etc.… of the 1960s, for example. She is inspired by things around her. Just wrapping a string, picking up a stick can lead her to a whole world of imagination. Suzanne has an attraction to tribal art of the Native Americans, Aboriginal, and especially the African tribes. Suzanne feels that tribal art talks about the people and tells stories about what life is like through their art. If you would like to see more of Suzanne’s work, stop by the Infinity Wellness Center at 442 S. Bay Road in North Syracuse.

einvented, a word that is defined in many ways. It is described as a remaking or a makeover, to re do. I never really understood why people would use that word. I have reinvented myself ! I would always wonder, “what is wrong with your previous self ?”Did you need to add a new arm, leg or torso? Was the previous one no longer functional? I have found that we use that term loosely when we want to change what we do,whether it is our life or our job. There is no reason to reinvent yourself. Your life was given to you so that you can branch out and grow, just as a tree would. There are many who feel that what they are currently doing may not be what they want, or it did not work out for them. That does not mean you are a failure or were not good enough. It simply means that there is so much out there that you should experience. Challenge yourself. We are meant to grow every day of our lives. Where is it written in stone that we can only go in one direction? Who said that the career we chose had to follow us throughout our lives? It is my opinion that society has dictated our life path. Is that what your legacy is about? I would hope not. Happiness should be at the top of your life list. You can obtain and maintain it by being who you want to be. If you try something and decide it is not what you wanted to do, then do something else. There is no need to “reinvent” yourself. You are not a failure or stupid. You are courageous and confident for doing it.

It is only another branch that you have added to your life tree. By doing this you are enhancing your knowledge and life experience. I also hear some say, “ I am too old to do that!” Again, is this something that was ingrained in us that at a certain age, we cease to function?

THOUGHTS

REINVENTED

Absolutely not! I have a philosophy and hope that you will take on one of your own. It is to be happy, if something does not work, try something new. Experience life, take those challenges and be true to who you are and what you want to do.If you are kind and try to be the best person you can be each day and take on whatever you want, your life is complete. Live it, be what you are, grow and branch off just as a tree does. So go and add more branches to your tree. It is easier than you think. Draw a trunk, which will represent you then draw a branch for everything that you have done so far. Now take a look at your tree and determine what new branches are going to grow. The new branch will represent that new growth in your life. Win or lose it is your one and only tree, so grow it the way you want it to grow. Learn new things and blossom. You deserve it!

re you a woman who cares about the health and well-being of yourself or your loved ones? So many factors can affect our lives, both positively and negatively. Lifestyles, attitudes, diet, movement, relationships, stress and more can all take a toll on our lives. Do you desire to take control over your future? It’s best done to start with the beginning and take one step at a time. Your physical body might be a good place to start because if your body feel s healthy your mind might too. Think about what you are putting into your body but don’t forget what you are putting on your body as well. The busyness of our lives often causes us to make bad food choices. We need a meal to be easy and quick, so we stop at a fast-food restaurant in between running errands. However, if you stop and think about what is in the food you are eating you might be very scared. Consider this- if you fill your car’s gas tank with burgers and fries rather than gasoline, is it going to run? It will not. If you fill it with soda, will it run? It might, but not very well and not for long. Our bodies are similar. They are well-oiled machines that need the proper fuel in order to perform efficiently. What is a solution for this? Let’s start with some of those terms that some people want to avoid like non-GMO, organic, natural, and local. They don’t have to be intimidating. GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism which in simple words means it did not come about by natural means. Add to that the chemicals and/ or hormones that are used to grow these

unnatural products so that more can be produced, and you have a very unhealthy result. Do you want to fill your tank with such food? How about organic? Organic means food grown without the use of pesticides and without being genetically modified. Organic is natural food in the sense that the products are grown and produced in their natural state without anything being added or changed that would compromise its nutritional value. Have you ever considered the possibility that these additives and the unnatural way our food is produced could be a

contributing factor in the many diseases, illness and allergies so prevalent among people today? Our bodies were not made to process all of these artificial ingredients causing them to have to work harder and differently. It’s no wonder we don’t always feel our best. What we put on our bodies is important as well. Again, natural, organic, chemical-free products are the most beneficial. With our skin being our biggest organ,

it only makes sense to pamper it with natural soaps, lotions, serums and makeup. Try natural beauty products. You will notice a world of difference! So, where can you find non-GMO, organic, natural and local products for yourself and your family? Do you feel like you don’t have the time, the budget or the opportunity to shop for better food options? Don’t feel like having to search through thousands of items to find the healthy choices? Don’t want to be tempted by the multitude of processed artificial foods available at your fingertips? There is an easy answer. Green Planet Grocery. Green Planet Grocery is a locally owned natural food store with three locations in Cicero, Fairmount and Oswego. You will find a full line of grocery items, including a large variety of organic produce, non-GMO foods, gluten free and allergy friendly options, a huge selection of vitamins and supplements, beauty products, even environmentally friendly cleaning and household choices. Each store is staffed with knowledgeable people who are eager to help. The Cicero location also includes the GPG Café which offers coffee and specialty coffee and tea beverages, as well as a complete menu which includes items for those with special dietary needs such as vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free. If you haven’t already, stop into a Green Planet Grocery near you. You won’t be disappointed! Buy Healthy. Eat Healthy. Be Healthy.

SAVING FOR EDUCATION

By Mary Ann Pierce

T

here are many ways to save for a child’s future, whether that future includes a college education, learning a trade, or to give a financial “boost” after completion of high school. Many simply fund an account “earmarked” for future use by that individual, taking birthday and holiday gifts and money from other occasions. Others may prefer to use one or a variety of college savings accounts, and there are several options available. Namely, a UGMA/ UTMA (Uniform Gift to Minors Account/Uniform Transfer to Minors Account), a Coverdell Education Savings Account, or a 529 Plan account. Each of these has its own set of rules for how the funds are handled, and how and when they may be disbursed. UGMA/UTMA accounts may be set up at any time for a child. There is no income limitation for those who contribute, and no limitation on the amount of the contribution(s). The beneficiary of the account gains control over the account at the age of majority (18 or 21 in most states) and may use the funds in any way that they wish. Upon distribution, a portion of the account earnings may be income-tax-free, a portion taxed at the child’s tax rate, and the remainder taxed at the parents’ rate. It is always a good idea to consult your tax advisor when it is time to take distributions from a UGMA/UTMA. A Coverdell Education Savings Account (ESA) can be used by the beneficiary for any qualified education expenses, grades K-12 and higher. There are income limits (for parents) at which the ability to contribute to a Coverdell ESA will be phased out, and the contribution per beneficiary is limited to $2,000 yearly. The account grows tax-free, and as long as withdrawals are made for qualified educational expenses the earnings will be free from federal tax. As in the UTMA//UGMA account, the beneficiary gains control over the account at the age of majority.

529 plans are often used to save for higher-education expenses, and there are no income limitations for contributors to these accounts. Anyone may contribute, and the contribution limit for these accounts is much higher ($350,000 per beneficiary). The owner of the account maintains control over the assets, and may decide when withdrawals may be made; the owner may also change the beneficiary of the account if the named beneficiary decides not to continue their education, or not use the entire account. This is an attractive feature of the 529 plans. There may be state tax advantages to the parents/owners of a 529 plan depending upon which plan they choose. Earnings grow tax-free, and as long as the withdrawals are for higher-education expenses, they are free from federal tax. Both 529 Plan and Coverdell ESA withdrawals may be assessed tax and penalties if they are used for anything other than qualified educational expenses. Each of these accounts varies in their features and benefits, as well as tax treatment, which is why I always encourage you to have a conversation with your tax advisor and financial advisor before establishing one, to make sure that it is the right fit for you and your beneficiary.
