Coping By: Mary McCandless
I
n our lives; we are always experiencing changes, and loss. Whether it is big or small, it affects us in many ways, and how we handle it all encompasses coping, coming to terms with it, letting it go and moving on. Easier said than done. How we handle the events in our lives can help us with internal stressors and make dealing with it a bit easier. It is my experience that coping is the result of what we experience, and the stages that we go through that leads up to how we cope. PsychiatristElizabeth Kubler-Ross modeled the five stages of grief in her book “On Death, and Dying” published in 1969. Those stages are Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. This is a book worth reading. Kubler-Ross formulated these stages from the work that she did with terminally ill patients. However, these stages can and do apply to many of our life experiences and not just with terminal illnesses. Something she also goes on to state after writing the book. She went on to expand it to divorce, loss of a loved one, etc. When we think of coping it can all fall into various life situations. When we lose a job, we are shocked, why did I lose my job? We then get angry about it and cannot believe that they had the nerve to do that. We go on to wonder, Can I get my job back, just talk to him/her? Eventually, it leads to depression. What do I do now? Finally, we realize that we have to accept the circumstances and deal with it. This process that we go through no matter, the situation can, in hindsight allow us to see what we may have overlooked or leads us to analyze what we went through so that it can make some kind of sense. The dictionary defines coping as “ facing and dealing with responsibilities, problems or difficulties in a successful or in a calm or adequate manner” dictionary.com That is easier said than done. We know that once we experience something that affects us, the five stages kick in, not always in the same sequence, but
6

they happen. So what can we do to turn that around? The key, however, is how we go through each stage and move on in our lives so that it does not overwhelm us. First, when something happens, we tend to internalize it and keep going back and forth in our mind as to why. We unfortunately cannot change what is. The next thing is to channel any anger into something positive. I always try to look at the bright side or find a bright side. Maybe the divorce is for the better, and I can now get myself back. If you receive terrible news about yourself or someone you love, look to the time that you have left and make the most of it. In the end if we spend more time stressing about that which we cannot change we lose so much time for positive things we could be experiencing. Additionally, we can focus on the things we can, in fact, change so that we may avoid an experience that will lead-up to coping. There are many ways to develop coping skills and reduce stress. Try to have a Positive attitude, Relaxation - Yoga Meditation, Support Groups, start a diary or write down your thoughts. Keep busy so that you do not dwell. Spend time with family and friends they are always there to lend an ear. Laughter is the cure for most everything, so treat yourself to a good comedy show or movie. One thing that I try to do, is to throw all of my feelings into one jar, so to speak. Next, I pick apart what I am feeling and compartmentalize it. I deal with it in increments and then let it go, until someone brings it up again and stirs everything back up in my jar. In closing there is no right or wrong way on how we cope. We all need to develop a method of coping, which will create the least amount of stress. After all, we cannot change the past or control the future and to dwell on either is fruitless. Let’s live for the moment, be the best we can and try not to sweat the small stuff.

Breast Reconstruction Basics
O
By: Beth Phillips,RPAC
ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and as such; I find that this is a good time to review the reconstructive options available for women (and sometimes men) who must face the challenges of breast cancer. This is often a very emotional and confusing time for the patient. Obviously, the goal of treatment is to remove the cancer and cure the patient, but for many women, reconstructing the breast can seem almost as important. Over the past few years, many advances have occurred, which make the quality of breast reconstructions today far superior to those of years past. After a diagnosis of breast cancer, most women will be facing either a lumpectomy, which removes a portion of the breast with the cancer, or mastectomy, in which the entire breast is removed. Differing reconstructive options are available. After lumpectomy, many times the affected breast is left smaller than the non- cancer breast. The goal of reconstruction is to achieve symmetry of the breasts. Usually, this involves reducing the larger breast, but also fat grafting to the area of lumpectomy can add volume that was lost. In our practice, fat grafting has become almost routine for all breast reconstructions. In this procedure, fat is suctioned from the abdomen and then injected into the area of defect. Most of the fat survives and acts to fill in area of missing tissue. Another alternative is what is called “Oncoplastic Breast Surgery.” In this procedure, the lumpectomy is performed and then the breasts reduced at the same setting, resulting in immediate symmetry. In the case of mastectomy, the entire breast mound needs to be reconstructed. Options fall into two main categories: Implants and autologous (the patient’s own) tissue. In the US, the most common type of reconstruction involves the use of implants. At the time of mastectomy, a tissue expander (stretcher) is usually
placed. After healing, fluid is placed into the expander to stretch the skin and muscle. Once the desired size is reached, the expander is exchanged with an implant. Alternatively, some women may be candidates for “one step “ reconstruction, in which the implant is placed directly at the time of mastectomy. With implant based reconstruction, patients usually spend only one or two days in the hospital, and recovery is relatively rapid. Using the patient’s own tissue is another option. The tissue can be taken from a variety of areas, but the most common are the abdomen, buttocks, or thighs. The tissue is usually transplanted using microsurgical techniques, which means that the tissue is removed, and then the blood supply re-attached under a microscope. This results in a breast reconstruction that is completely natural, with no implant. These procedures are much more complex, many times requiring 6-10 hours of surgery and a 5-7 day hospital stay. Refinements in these operations have resulted in much faster recovery and reduced complications. Unfortunately, the number of surgeons adept at these procedures is much smaller than those performing implant reconstruction. Recent advances have made breast reconstructions much better. Many patients can now have nipple sparing mastectomy, in which the nipple and areola are maintained. The ability to do this depends on the location of the cancer, but scientific studies support this as a safe option for many women. Obviously, the aesthetic results are much better if the natural nipple can be maintained. Another new option is “Pre Pectoral” breast reconstruction. In this procedure, the implant is placed above the chest muscle as opposed to below it, as has been classically done. Some feel that this results in less pain and has less affect on muscle function. Additionally, this avoids “animation,” which is the motion that occurs in a reconstructed breast when the implant is beneath the muscle. The ability to perform this depends on the thickness and quality continued on page 10

of the skin after the mastectomy is done. In order to help assess the skin quality, particularly in nipple sparing procedures, there is an imaging machine called the “SPY,” which allows the surgeon to evaluate the skin’s blood supply in the operating room at the time of mastectomy. This has resulted in much better reconstructions, and has reduced healing complications significantly.
Women -
Are You Sleeping?
Lastly, new implants are available for reconstructions, which are more solid and have reduced chance of rippling and rupture. These so called ”gummy bear,” or cohesive gel implants have been a great asset to plastic surgeons in delivering better results to their breast reconstruction patients. Many patients do not seek reconstruction because they are concerned with the cost. Almost all breast reconstructions for breast cancer and for patients with high breast cancer risk (BRCA and strong family history) is covered by insurance. While this article gives a brief overview on breast reconstruction, there is a wealth of information that is not covered. There continues to be new developments, which vastly improve the quality of reconstruction available to breast cancer patients. As always, seek a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon that can discuss your particular needs and goals. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy: An Organic Answer to Hair Loss
T
he human body is amazing. When you cut your finger, it knows how to heal itself by using the platelets in your blood, which are designed to repair damaged tissue. In the world of orthopedic medicine, plastic surgery, and dermatology Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy is a common form of treatment. More recently, hair-loss specialists and medical professionals have discovered that these same platelets also repair damaged hair follicles. Damaged hair follicles are the cause of hair loss for men and women experiencing male pattern baldness, female pattern baldness, alopecia, or hair thinning. Plate-
let Rich Plasma Therapy has been proven to repair damaged hair follicles and make them healthy enough to produce thick strands of hair, while reversing hair loss. What does the PRP Therapy process entail? It’s a very simple non-surgical procedure that involves minimal discomfort, no sedation, zero recovery time and is 100% safe when done properly. First, a medical professional will draw your own blood. Your blood is then spun in a centrifuge in order to separate the platelet rich plasma. Lastly, an anesthesia block is administered to the nerves of the scalp, and a medical professional strategically injects the platelet rich plasma into your scalp. Your own platelets begin repairing the damaged follicles. It’s that simple.
14
WOUNY • October 2017
Like anything else, when a product or procedure becomes successful it often is imitated but not necessarily duplicated. When inquiring about PRP be aware of anyone who administers this procedure without having the proper medical credentials. Also, ask if they use a centrifuge, one that spins fast enough to separate out the T-Cells and platelet rich plasma to help initiate hair growth. It’s important to know that not all centrifuges are created equal, and one of the most effective brands in the market is the Harvest Centrifuge. If they do not use the proper centrifuge, they are most likely injecting ineffective plasma. There are some places that will add growth factors, at Genesis II, we do not.
“When adding artificial additives to the plasma you add the risk of having a bad reaction, when using platelets from your own body, there is no risk of having a bad reaction because it came from your body,” says Certified PRP Specialist and Nurse Practitioner Karl Elsner. Nurse Practitioner Karl Elsner is certified in PRP Therapy and practices all in house PRP procedures at Genesis II’s surgical suite in Syracuse, New York. Genesis II is the only hair replacement studio in the Greater Syracuse area offering Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy with a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. The best option for receiving the most effective Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy is by going to a
specialized hair center who has a certified PRP medical professional on staff administering the treatment. Go with a team that offers all the current proven solutions for all your hair-loss needs. Nurse Practitioner Elsner recommends all PRP candidates be in good general health and admits that the procedure is not for everyone. The staff at Genesis II only recommends what will work for each individual based on their type of hair loss. “We have seen incredible results with our PRP clients because I only administer it to viable candidates using only platelet rich plasma that comes from them,” says Mr. Elsner. Back to School Made Healthy By: Stefanie Heath
B
ack to school can be an exciting time of the year. On the other hand, it’s also a time when schedules become jam-packed with after-school activities like sport practices and dance recitals. As parents, finding the balance between chauffeuring kids around, working and making three meals a day can become a challenge. One way to ensure our families are getting the nutrition and energy needed for the back to school grind is by serving up scrumptious and satisfying plant-based meals. According to the American Heart Association, promoting healthy eating habits is linked to decreased obesity in children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that approximately 17 percent of children are obese and at a higher risk for chronic and preventable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. October 1 is Child Health Day, which is the perfect time to focus on helping our kids develop healthy eating habits. When you plan ahead, it’s easy to create meals that will have your entire family eating well and feeling great! Here are a few of my kid approved tips that will help make meal planning simple: Be a Planner: Meal planning is one of the most effective ways to increase your intake of plant-based
18

foods. The benefits of taking time each weekend to plan our meals for the week are endless. Start by picking a day and time when you’ll choose your recipes and create a shopping list. I dedicate my Sunday nights to meal prep. After shopping, do as much preparation as you can so that you have the ingredients ready to go throughout the week – that means washing and cutting vegetables and cooking a big batch of whole-grain rice. For simple snacks, portion out carrots and pair it with hummus. One energy boosting snack is celery and a nut butter of your preference. This is an excellent time to engage your kids in the process, too! Ask them to prep part of your planned meal certain nights of the week. Not only will it help lighten your load, but it’s an excellent opportunity for your family to learn how to make healthy and delicious meals! Be a Minimalist: The best part about plant-based eating is that it doesn’t take many ingredients to create nutrient-filled meals. Stick with seasonal produce and bulk items like beans and whole grains. After you purchase your produce, be sure to wash and store it so you can have it ready to go. Placing certain fruits and veggies in the freezer works well and when you’re ready to make a meal or add it to a snack then just pull it out well in advance to thaw. Each summer, I pick fresh berries and freeze them. I spend an afternoon making jams, so I have it handy throughout the fall and winter. The jams are useful for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, a natural sweetener in oatmeal or to pour over whole-wheat pancakes. To be a food minimalist, think fresh, local and efficient when preparing meals and snacks.
Be an Energizer: Our kids need energy for the school day, so choose energy-boosting foods to help them have a more productive day. For some, the day doesn’t end after the last bell rings. After-school activities like sports, music or art can make for an exhausting day. Processed foods laden with saturated fat will only add to that by zapping energy. Sprinkle in energy boosting foods throughout the day like leafy greens and nuts. Spinach is loaded with iron, which aids in energy production. What if your kids aren’t exactly spinach lovers? Try sneaking spinach into a fruit and almond milk smoothie for breakfast or add it to creamy sweet potato soup that they take for lunch. Beans are a staple in my household not only because they are filled with vitamins and minerals, but because they are cost efficient given their long shelf life. Beans are packed with energy promoting nutrients. For lunch, try a build your own burrito. Kids love assembling their own meals, so pack a wholewheat tortilla along with a side of beans, brown rice, lettuce, avocado and salsa for a tasty meal. Don’t let the chaos of back to school season take you off the track of healthy eating. Perhaps the easiest and tastiest way to improve our diet is by practicing the Three Rs: “reducing” or “replacing” consumption of animal products and “refining” our diets by choosing products from sources using higher animal welfare standards. Just remember to keep it simple and fresh. And, most importantly, give plants the gold star by moving them to the center of the plate. Stefanie Heath is the New York-based food policy coordinator for the Humane Society of the United States.
Pumpkin Oats By Stefanie Heath
For many of us, October means a pumpkin takeover for Central New York. I love this breakfast because it’s not only delicious, but it’s healthy too! Flaxseed contains protein and pumpkin is loaded with vitamin A and fiber. This breakfast is likely to keep you full and satisfied through your busy morning.
Ingredients:
ONE SERVING
1/3 cup oats 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (vanilla or regular) ½ tsp vanilla extract ½ cup of pumpkin puree ½ tbsp ground flaxseed 1 tbsp of maple syrup ½ tsp cinnamon ¼ tsp ginger 1/8 tsp nutmeg
Directions: In a medium sized pot, heat the oats and almond milk over medium high heat. Once at a low boil, stir in pumpkin and ground flaxseed. Turn down heat to medium-low and stir frequently for 5-7 minutes. Add in vanilla and spices and heat on low for another five minutes, stirring frequently. Pour into bowl and add chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts and sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon. Enjoy! WOUNY • October 2017

HEALTH
INSURANCE By: Jon Neal Selzer, LUTCF
During a typical day, I receive numerous calls regarding health insurance-related issues. In the past year, we have seen a significant amount of attention given to health insurance in America through political conversation and media coverage. The Affordable Care Act (referred to by some as “Obamacare”) was the focus in Washington, DC as a group of legislators sought to Repeal and Replace the Affordable Care Act [ACA]. By that very language, it was implied that the entire ACA had no value, was not worth keeping in any form, and needed to be repealed in its entirety. The primary problem with all the discussions, politics, and posturing was that there was a huge lack of focus on what was in the best interest of the American people on the subject of healthcare.
vice when it is provided. • Deductibles: the amount which you pay entirely before the plan begins to pay. • Coinsurance: the cost-sharing percentage that is paid in part by you and in part by the plan after meeting your deductible. • Maximum Out-of-Pocket: the limit you would pay in a given year after which the plan pays 100%. • Network: refers to specific doctors, hos pitals and providers, which if used, are less expensive.
Politics aside, there are many excellent features within the ACA worth preserving. A few positive highlights include • no exclusions due to Pre-existing Con ditions, • kids able to remain on their parent’s insurance to age 26 • drug costs becoming more affordable under Medicare.
Unfortunately, the options are more limited for those who do not have a large group through which to purchase coverage. For these individuals and families, selecting from the available options, they can buy health insurance directly through insurance companies. These plans tend to be more expensive and often less comprehensive than those in larger groups. Another option to secure health insurance coverage is through the New York State Marketplace. If your income is below 400% of the Federal Poverty Level, you and/or your family may be eligible to receive a subsidy to assist you in paying for the monthly premium. In some cases, based on income, you might pay a monthly premium as low as $20/ month or no premium for comprehensive coverage. The options under the ACA have truly provided the opportunity for many to have affordable health insurance. Also, beginning in 2017 under the ACA, if
As we approach the end of the year, all efforts must be focused on finding solutions for individuals, families and businesses to secure the most comprehensive and cost effective health insurance coverage. Knowledge of basic healthcare needs can be helpful to find the most suitable program. A few concepts to become familiar with are: Co-pays, Coinsurance, Deductibles, Maximums Out-of-Pocket, and Networks. • Co-Pays: the amount you pay for a ser
Most people have health insurance available through an employer group. For many, the employer often helps the employee pay for the coverage. This tends to be the most comprehensive and affordable coverage generally available.
you voluntarily choose not to have health insurance, there is a $695/adult or 2.5% of household income penalty (whichever is higher) for not having coverage. Under the ACA, preventive services continue to be a base of coverage, paid in full through virtually all insurance plans in New York State. Such annual exams and screenings help contribute to everyone’s overall good health at little or no cost and serve to prevent higher healthcare costs as a whole. The basic framework for health insurance plans are based on Metal Levels, i.e., Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. These standardized models help the consumer more easily understand and select the best type of plan to meet their needs. Generally, Platinum Plans have higher premiums; no deductible and very low co-pays. Bronze plans have high deductibles, more out-ofpocket costs and lower premiums. Even with the help of this framework, it can be difficult to decide which option is better. Whether in the workplace or shopping for your own coverage, there are challenges. In the details and making the best choice for you can be overwhelming. Comprehensively comparing the various plan designs, understanding co-pays, coinsurance, provider networks, and the New York Marketplace Exchange may be simpler with the help of a professional. Beth Baldwin A Godsend to Those thrown into the World of Cancer By: Kristen Penfield Photography: Kamyal and Mary McCandless

“I will help anyone, any day, any time, no matter what.”
M
ost of us in Central New York are familiar with Beth Baldwin. Some know her as the sister of famous actor, Alec Baldwin. The sister of Daniel, Stephen and William Baldwin. The wife of Charles Keuchler and the mother of John, Jennifer, Jill, Jean, Jessica and Jacqueline. Who, like their mother, work tirelessly to help those affected by cancer…regardless of the type of cancer. However, after meeting with Baldwin, I realized the most important association one could make is that she is the daughter of Carol Martineau Baldwin and Alexander Baldwin. I say that because these two very extraordinary people taught every single one of their six children to help, support, mentor, give and be devoted to their passion. It all started at home and is still being implemented every day of their lives. Beth Baldwin will stop at nothing to help anyone affected by cancer. The type of cancer is irrelevant. Her parent’s powerful message is proving to be life-long. “I will help anyone, any day, any time, no matter what. What I do is not about me. I am doing God’s work. If Jesus can get up on the cross, and his mother watched how can I dare to complain? For me, that’s what it’s all about. From Him to me. There are many out there suffering from cancer. Right alongside them are their families suffering with them,” Baldwin said. “When someone feels with what they’re dealing is impossible, I give them hope and direction,” added Baldwin. On any given day, you can find Baldwin at Upstate University Hospital in various rooms or sitting with patients waiting for Chemo. She is not one to say, “I cannot make it,” because she is always there to

comfort those who are afraid and anxious about their illness. It does not matter if you have sought her out, or if you are in need, she will find you. Her mission – to help anyone with the journey they are facing and to advocate, should it be needed. We have known that the Baldwin family has been at the forefront of raising funds and leading the crusade to support research for breast cancer. In 1996, Stony Brook University named its breast cancer diagnostic and treatment facility the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center – one
University and the funds stay in the local community. “So many women cannot afford even the co-pay for a mammogram, Baldwin said, “How could I not help? A biopsy could cost a lot for them. I do not do this alone. There is a team of amazing doctors who are also willing to help. Dr. Scott Albert, Division Chief of the Breast Care Center at University Hospital Cancer Center, works relentlessly helping all people he can who have been affected,” added Baldwin. His clinical affiliations encompass a plethora of cancers, and he helps with so many people Baldwin may refer to him. Baldwin added, “Dr. Timothy Damron at Upstate University Hospital Orthopedic Department goes above and beyond to make sure all get the care that is needed. The wonderful doctors and hundreds of volunteers make it possible for our foundation to be a success.”
Beth with her grandchildren of only seven centers in the world. In reaction to this, Carol Baldwin’s family established the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund to help support research, raising over $4.2 million to-date. They still kept going. They created the Carol M. Along with sponsors, donors and fundraising events each year, the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund receives two to three $50,000 grants to researchers in Central New York for breast cancer research – funding medical explorations to determine whether a particular research theory
With that said, Baldwin does not focus only on breast cancer. “I want anyone who is suffering – either themselves or a family member to feel safe,” Baldwin stated. “Not only is {all} cancer debilitating, physically and mentally, it is extremely stressful for the entire family. I am there for any reason they need me – advice, a hug, an ear; I will

support families any way I can and be sure they are connected to the right doctors,” she added. Baldwin has had much experience dealing with cancer in her own family. Her mother-in-law died of breast cancer. Her father died of lung cancer. Her mother fought breast cancer and she, and her daughters are vigilant when it comes to being screened. “I continue to aim patients to the appropriate specialists,” said Baldwin. After dealing with severe back issues and many surgeries, Baldwin committed herself to helping others.

ing for others. A few years after Carol Baldwin’s husband passed away from lung cancer in 1983; her fight against breast cancer became fierce after both of her own breasts were removed. Now at age 82, Carol Baldwin knows her family will never stop working until a search for a cure is achieved.
Causing an uproar by standing up for the students, Baldwin insisted that his children always do what’s right, no matter the consensus. Beth Baldwin lives this every day of her life, as do her brothers. Baldwin stated, “Our family believes in community service. We believe that through God, we can help others.” Baldwin’s parents remained an extremely positive influence in their lives while growing up, supporting their children in whatever direction they chose. It is no wonder that when Baldwin’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, she turned heartbreak into a powerhouse of heal-
Helping people is what the Baldwin’s are about. Alec Baldwin remains a large part of their family foundation. Daniel Baldwin has spent an incredible amount of time to helping drug and alcohol addicts and their families through SOBA Recovery Center and assisting his mother and sister in raising awareness with the foundation. As well, Stephen and William assist in their family’s mission to find a cure. When there is that down time for Beth, it is her grandchildren that keeps her going. The always giving Beth wanted her grandchildren to share her story and be on the cover of the magazine, clearly showing again how selfless she is.
Growing up, Baldwin’s parents, Carol and Alexander worked extremely hard and regardless of their financial state, gave and supported where needed in their community. They consistently taught their children to do the same. The two met at Syracuse University and vowed to instill these traits in their children. Baldwin said, “I remember when I was a young girl, my father put all of us children in his car and told us he wanted to show us something. He went to the school where he was a teacher, a football coach and in thirty-two years, never missed a day of work. There was a picket line and teacher strike in front of his school. He stood firmly that he didn’t want his

A mere example of Beth Baldwin’s actions: Our publisher, Mary McCandless was contacted by a good friend of hers, Lilliana Amato. Just this year, her father Vinny, was visiting from Italy. Amato said, “Immediately upon arrival, my father was noticeably weak and had to be hospitalized. He told us of some of his symptoms, black stool, tired. He already beat lung cancer many years ago. We were scared.” Amato, not sure what to do contacted Mary to see if she knew anyone who could help them through this. McCandless said, “There is only one person that I know of who might be able to help.” McCandless called Baldwin immediately who insisted Amato contact her right away.
Left to right: Vincenzo & Lilliana Amato, Beth Baldwin, Veronica Evola and Joseph Evola
Amato said, “We were lost and scared. We weren’t sure which direction to go with my father. At once, Beth Baldwin became not only an advisor, but a friend. She helped us all remain calm and under control. Beth directed us to the right doctors and comforted us when everything looked black. My father was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, undergoing treatment and Beth Baldwin still remains my rock, months later.” Amato added, “Beth made sure our family understood exactly what her father would have to go through. She visits my father just to see how he’s doing. It means so much to us.” Amato said how incredible it has been to see such compassion from Beth Baldwin – who did not know her at first, but has quickly become an important part of coping with such terrible news. As well, the doctors to whom Baldwin has directed her have been very caring and understanding. Beth Baldwin taught me too, that mental relaxation during coping is extremely important. I baby sit my two grandchildren who bring me joy, but I also run every week to help me cope. It has helped tremendously.” Amato added, “I believe in God’s intervention. My father, who is 72 years young, could have visited any time. The fact that he visited me precisely at his time of need, and care speaks volumes. In the past, he was making efforts to come visit me, but there was always some kind of interference. He made it to me in the nick of time. Of this, I am sure.” Baldwin said, “I walk through areas of Syracuse where I know there are people living under bridges and homeless. I bring boxes filled with T-Shirts, food, drinks and tell them to never give up. I work hard, but I am blessed. I could never not help someone. Through God, I help others.” After having met with Beth Baldwin and learning of her amazing and continuous contributions, I realized where I could help too. She works relentlessly; she never stops. It began with two people meeting at Syracuse University, falling in love and stamping their conviction and faith into the heart of their six children. They have each grabbed the torch and carry it with them each and every day. The Baldwins: Caring, Compassionate and a Giving family. Johnny Appleseed Revival See What’s Inside! By: Samantha Leader

nique and homemade come to mind when thinking of The Shoppes at Johnny Appleseed. Patrick and Erica Gilmore restarted the family business in the spring of 2017 by the wishes of Florence Gilmore, his mother. After three years of closing, the building was still empty in the spot, leading the youngest Gilmore boy to bring it back and better than it was prior. The Shoppes at Johnny Appleseed went from selling only apples in the fall, which then grew to unfinished furniture, cider and next a café. Since the Shoppe has reopened, it went with a different route such as vendors in the store, including The Heckled Hen Antiques, Room to Improve, Route 20 Sofa Company, Alexandra’s Attic, Decorative Edge, and the Country Knoll Handmade Designs. Those are the main vendors, but it is still growing. Erica said that when they got 5 to six vendors inside the store and held their grand opening it was word of mouth that attracted more. One vendor would tell another about us, and we had people reaching out. “My husband woodworks tables, benches, live edge pieces, burl routes, and custom modern stuff, which is sold in the front room in the store,” Erica said. Throughout the store, there are many different products such as furniture, soaps, clothes, pottery, mirrors and honey. These products aim to age groups that are older demographic, mostly couples or women. “I am in the process of getting us our wine license, hoping to catch the attention of a younger demographic also by wine tasting,” Eric explained. We want to get a wine bar and have New York State wine and New York State beer,

eventually get onto the wine tour trail for people to come after Empire, etc., according to Erica. Patrick Gilmore loves to be by people and building up conversations about the Shoppes. This leaves him taking care of more of the behind the scenes, and Erica is more of the front face. According to Patrick, Erica started back in the kitchen, and he would stay near the front of the store but soon realized the other departments suited them better. He will spend a good chunk of his weekend mornings in the back cooking to prep for when the Apple kitchen opens. “He went to the culinary Institute to learn to bake; he makes soups, carrot cake, etc., which is sold in the café, the Apple kitchen, that is opened on the weekends,” Erica said. The business prior to them taking over pulled out 200 trees, but there are still 300. Therefore, they are aiming to have it opened next fall. The apples will be all organic and not sprayed. “We will have the apple farm opened to all the community to pick their own; we hope for people to come walk the trails with their pets, horseback riding, snowshoe or cross-country ski, anything to make this Shoppe have more of a community connection,” Erica said. We will not expand to other locations because there is about 20,000 sq. ft. of space within the building that is open right now. We are currently applying for a permit for an event space to hold at the back of the building, according to Erica. “We want to become a destination spot for people, and a spot where they can come to just hangout and eat lunch,” Erica said. The Shoppes at Johnny Appleseed is a very open atmosphere where people can come and feel at ease. We make sure to
have music on, have our kids around and benefit from people having this type of homey feeling when they walk to the store, according to Erica. If you would like to check out The Shoppes at Johnny Appleseed they are located at 3402 Old State Rd, Erieville, NY and visit their website at www.johnnyshoppes. com

The Love of P PCORN Celebrating National Popcorn Popping Month By: Mary McCandless

ho would have thought that a corn kernel could be a staple for entertainment during movies, sports or just relaxing at home? These tasty kernels have been popping for over 4,000 years by the Cochise Indians and were discovered in a cave in Mexico. Additionally, popcorn comes from one type of corn; zea mays everta. This is the only one that can pop and become popcorn. Kingofpop.com
October is National Popcorn Popping month and with the weather getting cooler, it is a great time to get popping or to pick up some already popped popcorn. There are many flavors at your local stores like Kettle Corn, Butter, Extra Butter and original, but I wanted something different and found a shop with more flavors than you can count.
The Kandied Kernel Popcorn shop, a family-owned business is located in Liverpool and Cicero. Owners Tara Russo and father Paul also have Troy the Popologist and brother creating fun flavors. I was given a tour of the Cicero store and Erica the manager was kind enough to let us sample some flavors. You too can sample when you come er Troy into any of their stores. Kreme and Chives, Ghost pepper, Sour Green Apple, Banana, Strawberry, Peach Mango, Cherry pickle juice and more. As I strolled through the store, I also noticed a barrel of Sour Patch Kids. I was a bit nervous about trying them but was coaxed into it. It is really good and kids will love it! With Halloween just around the corner stop in and get some Witches Brew, Ghost Poop and Frankenstein Brains. This is fun to serve for your Halloween parties, and everyone young and old will love it. Tara and her family are always working on new popcorn flavors, and her children are a huge part of the fun and unique names. That makes it kid tested and approved! It is popcorn heaven! Are you planning a party, event or wedding? Erica shared with us that they can create popcorn bars for any occasion. She said that they recently did a wedding, and it received high reviews. What a perfect way to be unique and change it up. You can also send popcorn to friends and family that are out of town. Their unique and delicious flavors are amazing, and If you love popcorn and want to discover some new flavors, it is worth the trip. In addition, stay tuned for fun holiday flavors such as Santa Cookies, Grinch, Koal and more.

Meet Karmin Schafer By: Audrey Levinson
I
t was a Friday night when I went to visit Karmin Schafer Hansen at her home. The first time we met she was adorned in Wonder Woman attire. A bit eccentric for an art opening but it was the Wonder Woman show at the Tech Garden in downtown Syracuse, NY and her costume made sense. We shook hands, and it was then I was introduced to Karmin’s alluring and quite thought-provoking paintings. I wasn’t sure what to think at first. Her paintings were beautiful in color, and I loved the textures. They were full of mystery and very abstract. I love abstract art. Karmin’s work was very satisfying to take in aesthetically. I usually think of abstract art as an expression of the creator’s idea through shape, color, and texture. I remembered something that night about abstract art that I really had forgotten. It can also include or have a focus of abstracting objects. As we continued to talk of her work and her life, I could see how her free spirit soars in her creative thought, her intellect and every fiber of her soul. She is delightfully intense about describing to me who she is and why she paints. I sat with her for five hours in
her home studio. We naturally entertained each other by rolling around ethereal ideas about life and art. Philosophical, yes but we had moments of laughter and storytelling. My first question for her was “so what’s up with the white rectangles in your paintings? I thought she might tell me that they were portals into an imaginary universe. Maybe the rectangle is her favorite shape, or she completely understands the abstract thoughts behind the paintings of Mark Rothko. As she began to talk about her paintings her eyes blazed with the passion only an artist would recognize. Karmin led me into her living room to show me her first “Shed” painting. It was a painting that had abstract elements yet its visual characteristics were very recognizable. “This is where it all began” she said and continued her story. When Karmin was in high school, she would drive past the DeWitt Rod and Gun Club on Woodchuck Hill Rd. She was struck by a scene as she peered out of the windshield of her car to see the dichotomy between stark white sheds and the organic surroundings of nature’s foliage. To her, it was a monumental sight in her life. You could say that she fell in love with this large open field and its mysterious white rectangles. She decided that she would one-day paint this riveting piece of her world and bring it to life on canvas. In her senior year at college she felt the time was right to experiment with the image of the “sheds” that she longed to paint. The scene stayed effervescent in her mind’s eye, but she did shoot photographs from different perspectives to refer to. She has been painting various interpretations of her sheds for 25 years. She said it never gets old for her. There is always a way to make each painting different based on this scene that saturates her imagination. She paints with oil paints, a palette knife and her fingers. She has created three series of these paintings with more to come. I asked her about which artist/s she is inspired by, and it is Piet Mondrian. She told me she related to his thought process, though not a fan of his actual work. Piet

Shed #4 Mondrian used to create his well-known paintings of simple lines, squares and rectangles in the primary colors. If you could see the progression of his work as he gradually went from recognizable subject matter to abstracting, he was known as a minimalist in the art world. Karmin claimed that she uses the same thought process as Mondrian where abstraction works. Karmin lives in Manlius with her husband and two daughters. She teaches art in a local elementary school by day. By night, she turns into an artist extraordinaire. You can see her work at karminschaferhansenart.com. helly Straub’s positive attitude and will to fight led her to tell her story to others fighting to understand. It took one year of treatments and surgeries for Straub to overcome her Stage 2B breast cancer. She was diagnosed only two months after her 40th birthday, which started a journey that her and her family could have never seen coming. In December 2013, Straub’s long journey began from diagnosis to surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and hormone therapy drugs. “I received gifts, dinner, and flowers at my door step from people in the community,” Straub said. “This went on for the whole year of treatment, which was an amazing experience because you do not expect strangers to be sending you all of this,” she explained. Beth Baldwin, a friend of my family, called me on the phone when I was first diagnosed. She would sit with my family during my surgeries for nine hours, and consoled them when the news came that the cancer had traveled to my lymph nodes, Straub explained. In September 2015, there was a 3-day walk for the Susan Coleman Foundation; this walk required raising $46,000. The Badass BBQ, which still runs every year, started to help Straub raise money for the walk. “My sister, Cheryl, Mom, Gale, and my better half, Lucia, all were with me since day one with the cancer and then the badass BBQ,” Straub said. After running the Badass BBQ and seeing how much of a success it was, it intrigued them to learn more about charities and to give back to others as they did for her. I applied to start a nonprofit, which was

By: Samantha Leader a lot of paperwork and filing, and then finally started Hope Chest for Charity. All of my board members make up a big circus, that is what we call ourselves, and do this as volunteers, never paychecks, Straub explained. There are three main events that Hope Chest for Charity holds every year, which is the Badass BBQ, Lakeland Winery Tasting, and a basket fundraiser on Facebook. They will hold many small fundrais-
ers, but those three make up most of the donations that the charity receives. According to Straub, The Badass BBQ is the biggest fundraiser since it first started three years ago. “This past year was my favorite because a dream I’ve had for three years was successfully done,” Straub said. . It takes 364 days to plan because they build all the sets and everything themselves. They have food, music, raffles, games, etc. For many years; Straub was striving for “Ride for the Rack,” which The Lakeside Fire department held, to end at the Badass BBQ Event. The bikers pay $10 a bike to ride 50 miles and end at the BBQ. They then ride around the parade loop while the
song born to be wild played. The past Badass BBQ was inspiring to all for more than just that, the landscapers association took time to build a garden for Maggie, a woman who had stage four cancer. Maggie who was treated for her cancer found out that it had come back two years later. She passed away on September 3, 2017. “It is important to keep people like her and others who cannot be treated in our prayers because not everyone is lucky enough to be a survivor,” Straub said. Hope Chest for Charity is different from most other non-profits because it does not just donate to one specific thing. They give to anyone, from $3,000 to a boy with mobiles’ syndrome, or a woman whose son committed suicide, house fires, food to women without a job, and giving out baskets with gift cards to people in need. “We will go through nominations of people that are submitted online when we have all of our fundraiser money and see who we can help with the money earned,” Straub said. Hope Chest for Charity is there to help people of Upstate N.Y. that may not be lucky enough to have family members, friends, or resources. “There is nothing I would change about Hope Chest for Charity, it is awesome people spending their time to make visions come alive,” Shelly Straub

ctober is one of our favorite times of the year as warm winds highlight the changing leaves and fall colors. It’s a perfect time visit an apple orchard, buy a pair of great fall boots, and see your dermatologist.
Apples – Do It
How many times have you heard the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” There is a lot of truth to the statement. Apples are one of nature’s most wholesome, affordable gifts for your body. Fall is the perfect time to pick your favorites. The truth is, apples have numerous health benefits, including: natural dietary fiber to keep you regular; antioxidants and flavonoids which may reduce your risk diabetes, heart disease and cancer; decrease your risk of diabetes; detoxify your liver; and control your weight, just to name a few.
Boots and Things
There are a couple of must haves for fall that look great on everyone, regardless of size, shape and height. Fall Leather Boots - A good pair of leather or suede boots ARE A MUST. About four years ago, I bought a pair of leather Arturo Chiang’s knee boots at Dillards on clearance for $25 in late summer. They were out of season and an unbelievable deal. Despite being scuffed and worn a hundred times over, I still have people stop and ask me where I got my boots. Every fall, before heading home to Central New York, I have the wonderful shoe shiner at the Atlanta Airport shine ‘em up. You don’t have to break the bank to find your style. Nine West has some great boots for under a $100. Target also has some wonderful options.
Long fall sweater
Nothing feels as good as wearing your hair down on a beautiful fall sunny day with leather boots and a bulky sweater. Throw a scarf on as the night falls. If you find sweaters to be too itchy, try wearing a light cotton shirt under your sweater. If you’re like me and you can’t wear wool, there are many options out there in beautiful fall cotton sweaters and colors. H & M and TJMaxx have some great options for under $30. Scarf – whenever someone I know travels abroad. I always ask them to pick me up a scarf. I now have a beautiful scarf collection from around the world: France, Austria, and England. And I love every one of them. I also have favorites from TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Target. Scarves take the nip out of the night.
Skin care
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, your skin is the largest organ of your body. With that in mind, fall is the perfect time to visit your dermatologist and come up with a skin-care regiment before winter’s impending dry inside-air takes a toll on your glow. Besides, it’s a good opportunity to make sure you get a melanoma check. My dad died from melanoma at the age of 40. So, do yourself a favor and for the $30-40 co-pay a dermatologist may cost, is worth its weight in glow. Gold too, but who doesn’t love glowing skin? Speaking of which, I recently came across this article which you might find interesting about a new trend, called ‘glass skin’. Korean women are known for taking their skincare routines seriously. So if you’re looking to revamp a dewy, luminous and translucent look during the colder months ahead, check this article out. It also has a trove of great products, which may entice you without breaking your budget. https://www.yahoo.com/news/why-everyone-instagram-suddenly-glass-220000917.html

Vera House
and Their Mission to End Violence
W
By: Abbey Adams
alking into Vera House’s new location on James Street, you immediately feel warm and at home. Tiffany blue walls and old-fashioned shiny hardwood floors greet you with open arms. Vera House is a comprehensive domestic and sexual violence service agency providing shelter, advocacy, and counseling services for women, children & men, education and prevention programs and community coordination. This year will be their 40th year serving Central New York’s communities. Chris Benton is the Director of Communications & Special Events at Vera House. The Le Moyne College grad has been with Vera House for 20 years, organizing four major events every year, keeping up with social media, and sharing as much as she can with the public through the agency. Benton shared the impact this job has been on her life. Being able to provide help to those who need it is a feeling you can’t get over. In 2016 alone, 322 adults and children were sheltered in an emergency shelter. “To see how many people it touches and effects. It does not discriminate.” That’s where Vera House steps in to lend a helping hand, hug, shelter, or lesson. Benton describes Vera House as “a beacon of hope and healing.” She explains why their outreach service is unique to every person “The end goal is to provide information and support for individuals to make an empowered decision for outcomes that meet their needs. We believe that each person’s background and experience are unique and require an individualized approach.”

A 24-hour crisis & support line is available whenever someone needs assistance. There are several programs are offered as well, such as: Advocacy Program, Alternatives to Domestic Violence Program, Community/Youth Education Program, Emergency Shelter, Envisioning Change & Healthy Options for Families (ECHO), New Directions Rape Crisis & Sexual Assault Services, Pet Foster Care Program, the Syracuse Area Domestic & Sexual Violence Coalition, Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program, Volunteer Program, and Youth Counseling Services. Just last year, Vera House therapists provided 3,164 therapy sessions to 608 adults as well as counseling 516 children during 3,655 individual counseling sessions. Not only does Vera House have a stellar smiling staff, but their volunteers are just as dedicated as they are. With over 125 active volunteers, the staff can take on more with the help of the community. There’s no doubt the success of Vera House wouldn’t be what it is today without the help of local businesses and companies. In 2016, Vera House was a charity partner with JPMorgan for the 34th Annual JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge. A road race that helped Vera House receive a $20,000 donation. Fuccillo Auto Group also raises money for Vera House every October. For every vehicle sold, the group will donate $100 to the agency. Vera House’s vision statement is “a world free of violence and abuse.” Benton says, “Vera House hopes to create a world in which domestic violence and sexual assault no longer exist, where
every person is honored and respected in their relationships, and every child can trust the adults in their lives to keep them safe.” Unfortunately, the national statistics are staggering – on average; nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States, and it is reported that every 98 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. Nevertheless, last year alone Vera House educated 18,793 people and were present in 48 schools in addition to local community youth groups in Onondaga County. Education is an important element of this issue, which is why Vera House will continue to educate the public on domestic violence and how to proceed with help when you need it. If you or someone you know needs help, the Vera House 24-hour crisis line number is: (315) 468-3260. Help is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. “Schmid Snaps” Helps Customers Submit Smart Phone Claims
By: Diane Schmid-McCall; Vice President; Rudy Schmid Total Car Care
I
f you had a bodily injury, you wouldn’t you want a doctor to diagnose you by looking at a photo you send from your phone. If you had a car accident, you probably wouldn’t want your claim estimated by sending a photo to your insurance company either. Unfortunately, that is how insurance claims are currently be settled, and fortunately Rudy Schmid Total Car Care’s “Schmid Snaps” service will help you get through this process and make sure you get the fairest and best settlement.
•The photos do not capture hidden damage, for example, behind the torn bumper or crumpled panel. •Costs for hidden damage are not included in the “quick” settlement check. •Without thorough documentation, you may be driving an unsafe vehicle. •Cars have complex systems that need a professional to identify related damage, such as airbags, restraints, cameras and sensors.
Maybe you’ve seen TV ads from insurance companies showing people submitting accident photos from their smart phones to file a damage claim. The message is one of convenience and a quick settlement.
Consumers have no idea if the settlement is fair. It is now up to you to find a shop to do the repairs as estimated by a “desk review” technician with no automotive experience.
However, the convenience and quick settlement are not necessarily a benefit to the person with the damaged car but more of a benefit to the insurance company. Here is why:
Additionally, customers have indicated that the photo “app” is not easy to navigate. They are told there is no other option to file the claim and using the app results in initial estimates that are 25-30% of what the required repairs will cost.
•The insurance company saves the cost of an appraiser coming to see the damage, which also means no one is there to answer your questions about the scope of the repair.
