Blame Game A

buse is an ugly issue that most people have strong views about. As a society we repeatedly denounce child abuse; there aren’t many people who think abusing a child is ok. Yet something shifts when it’s intimate partner violence. The shift is subtle, the abuser can still be seen as a monster- however when it comes to grown women being beaten, screamed at, or demeaned there is now an element of blame on the victims. Why would she stay? People don’t ask that of children. Some will say this is because children have less power and don’t know how to speak out, and my answer would be that power and control dynamics are consistent in abuse regardless of age. The reasons children don’t speak out is often the same as grown adults. As a society we fearlessly stand up for children being harmed; however when women, and even a small group of men, are being harmed in an intimate partner relationship the support is less consistent. When the discussion of intimate partner violence comes up people ask questions like: “Why would she stay” or “Why doesn’t she leave”. It’s on the minds of everyone, and that alone should be a clue that the answer isn’t very simple. The fact that as a society we ask the same question over and over and over again should lead us to insight that it might not be anything anyone can

By: Molly Lizzio, MA, LPMFT truly and fully extensively understand unless they’ve experienced it. One of the problems with understanding abuse is that abuse thrives from silence. It’s very important that people involved in that cycle remain quiet about it, so it can continue. It’s not just the victims who must remain silent; abusers are equally as silent about this cycle. Close family and friends who have suspicions often remain silent, out of fear: fear of the damage to a relationship, fear of what making an accusation will do within a family or even fear from the ramification for a victim if it was being spoken about. Everyone involved is very silent. When it does come to light, outsiders look to the victim and the message is “shame on you- you should have spoken up”. Have these women no respect? To let someone hurt them physically, emotionally, mentally? How could she let this continue? What about her children? These are the questions that are asked and the discussions had, then as a society we wonder why people remain quiet when faced with abuse. Judgment is when questions are raised about a woman who won’t, can’t, or doesn’t know how to leave. That judgment is not helpful. Judging an abuse victim for not helping themselves is like saying they deserve what they’re getting, which is in direct alignment with the

justification the abuser makes. The advice I give is to come at this issue from a place of love. When you love someone and they’re hurting or are living in a way you don’t agree with and you’re worried, the questions sound different. They sound like “How can I help?” “What do you need” “Are you ok?” When we come from a place of love, care, and concern the conversation changes. It’s time to reinvent how we all view domestic violence. As long as it’s seen as a purely women’s issue it only reaches a certain audience. This is a society issue, and the focus should not be solely on helping women out of intimate partner violence, but also teaching our young people about violence and anger. Arming both men and women alike with healthy coping skills is necessary. Even a simple word shift from “victims”, to referring to women’s as “survivors” speaks volumes. The biggest thing is to talk about this issue. Break the silence on a large scale, make it something people know about, and our children understand is wrong in any context. This is a painful and misunderstood issue, and we may not ever fully understand all the dynamics at play, however, we have a much better shot when we come at the problem with love instead of judgment.

By Audrey Levinson

C

ynthia King has spent much of the last ten years of her life painting in her DeWitt garage. She has Multiple Sclerosis an autoimmune disease that incorrectly attacks healthy cells of the central nervous system. This progressive disease was discovered in Cynthia about 20 years ago. When first diagnosed in her early thirties, she was distraught and knew her life would have to change. As a wife, mother of two young girls and holding a full time job, over time she felt her disease progress. Mentally and physically she realized that she could no longer work and had take early retirement.

eyes, right hand, and her mobility until her girls were off to college. When Cynthia was a student at Jamesville DeWitt High School, her favorite subject was Art. George Benedict, Sr. had recently joined the JD staff and was her art teacher. Cynthia felt that what was so wonderful about his style of teaching was that he taught his students how to really see objects as they were.

Cynthia enjoys the challenges of learning how to paint. She compares it to playing golf. Any golfer knows that the more you

What influenced Cynthia was that George would point out that in the mind, an orange looks like an orange. We know it is round, has certain texture, and that the color is orange. However, if you really look at the exact shape, and the way the light hits it, along with the transitions between them, you learn to see what the mind’s eye misses. George was an amazing teacher and the techniques he used to prove his case were paramount. During and after high school she and other friends would go to his painting exhibitions just to hear his exuberant talks or watch him paint. Cynthia said, “we were almost like George groupies” with a big smile on her face.

MS can be very depressing as well as debilitating so Cynthia decided that she would not focus on her disease, instead her focus would be to live beyond her disease. She asked herself an important question, if I never had to work again, what would I do? Her answer, paint even if it kills me and she prayed that MS would not take her

the droop of a cheek.

Cynthia feels understanding what you have learned mechanically, is using a paintbrush and a squinted eye to check perspective. There were many challenges along her path and now she was on her own having to figure out color theory and value transition without her teacher. At first she would put lots of colors on her palate but this confused her. She referred to books on color mixing and recreated portraits from old master’s paintings, like Van Gogh and Renoir and Michelangelo. Cynthia has a wonderful collection of those in her studio, and has learned to squeeze the oil paint right onto the canvas. This has helped her to capture the true color of the eye’s iris or

practice your shots the better you get. In Cynthia’s case she will forever practice her techniques because “life is a journey, not a destination” to her. Her paintings are a collection of flowers, portraits, and her latest paintings reflect the beauty of the Thousand Islands. She has exhibited her work at East Village Gallery and with Just Desserts Guild Show at the Camillus Library. Cynthia continues to paint almost every day in her garage. She would like to one day turn her garage into an art gallery. I believe this very strong, delightful woman can do whatever she believes she can, despite her MS. She truly lives up to her philosophy of surpassing her disease. WOUNY.COM • OCTOBER 2015

Become Your Own Hero W

hile dancing around my house singing Whitney Houston’s greatest hits I had an epiphany. Her song “Greatest Love of All” is one of those songs that I just want to belt out from the rooftops. “Everybody’s looking for a Hero…someone to lead the way”. I would love to be that hero for you: guiding you to better health through clean eating and playful movement. But, in life’s journey, you have to “depend on yourself ”. And as Whitney sings it better than anyone, “Learning to love your self, it is the greatest love of all.” The answer to why we are not fulfilling our dreams, eating the way we know we should and building physical work and play into our daily lives is because many of us haven’t learned to really love ourselves. Feeding yourself healthy is a pure act of love. It says I am so important, that I am going to make sure I eat the best food. No skimping because I’m tired or lazy. No, I am just too important. I love myself too much to do anything but. It is what we would do for our baby, our dog and even the plants in our garden. But, somehow when it comes to ourselves, we don’t realize we are “the greatest love of all”. We often fill our days with negative messages and self-doubt. The end of a “I’m not good enough” day often results in an

This will keep your body growing.

Hello, Flu season: damp, cold weather and shorter days. I can't think of a better time for chicken soup! This basic soup recipe works by itself, but you can add to it or change it up with whatever you have on hand. No barley? Add rice. No garlic? Add onions or tomatoes.... Sincerely, Ginny Stewart Gordon The Brick House Cafć Follow us on Facebook!

Chicken Soup 1. Start with a whole roaster and cook until done, pull the meat off and then boil the carcass. Discard the bones and use the broth. [Or put it in a crockpot in the morning and it'll be falling off the bone that evening. Or buy breasts and thighs and sauté them. Cut them up and throw in 8 cups of packaged chicken stock.] 2. Sauté 2 cups of cut up celery and 1 medium onion chopped [white or sweet] in 4 tblsp of olive oil or butter until tender. You can add a few cloves of mashed up garlic too. 3. Add to Chicken Stock.

4. Add 6-8 Carrots [diced], 2 tsp. thyme, 2 tblsp. lemon juice, pinch salt and pepper [to taste], 2 bay leaves, 1/4 cup of dry white wine or Vermouth, and 2 tsp. parsley. 5. Now start playing. If your family likes barley, add 2 cups of barley and simmer in stockpot until tender. Orzo? Then add 10 minutes before ready to serve. Organic Baby Spinach? Add 10 minutes before serving. Noodles? Boil your favorite pasta, pour soup over and serve. Corn and tomatoes add to taste... *If you have leftovers you don't want to freeze, serve it another night as chicken and biscuits or as chicken pot pie.* WOUNY.COM • OCTOBER 2015

Understanding Breast Reconstruction

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

A

s we direct our attention to Breast Cancer during the month of October, an important focus for women is breast reconstruction after a mastectomy, lumpectomy or biopsy. CNY Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery, LLC is a leader in Central New York in the area of breast reconstruction. Beth Phillips, RPAC has the knowledge and experience to provide expert care for patients of the Syracuse plastic surgery practice. Phillips began her career as a Physician Assistant at the Cortland Memorial Emergency Room. She furthered her surgical skills and education by working at St. Joseph’s Hospital as a Physician Assistant and the Coordinator of the Surgery PA Department. In 2000, she went into private surgical practice for a highly experienced general surgeon who focused on breast and thyroid surgery. Beth, for the past 11 years has been working with Dr. Deboni, a respected plastic surgeon serving Syracuse, NY. Beth’s knowledge and experience with cosmetic and reconstructive procedures is extensive. Phillips tells us that approximately 40% of the overall patients they treat come for breast reconstruction and that surgery is typically performed after a patient has had a mastectomy, lumpectomy, or biopsy in cases where a lot of breast tissue has been removed. Phillips says, “While the majority of reconstruction is done using implants, there is something called Autologous Tissue Reconstruction where a patient’s own tissue is used for part or all of the reconstruction. Sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that make implant reconstruction impossible or in other cases, simply patient preference.” “The most common tissue (called a “flap”),” adds Phillips, “is used from the abdomen. The skin flaps have soft tissue attached to a muscle that has a healthy blood supply to

By: Kristen Penfield keep the tissue viable or “alive” when placed where it is needed for the reconstruction.” Phillips notes that the common flaps are: TRAM/DIEP, using tissue from the abdomen, latissimus from the back, gluteal from the buttocks and gracilis from the inner thigh. However, these tend to be much more involved surgeries and not suitable for every patient. This decision should be made in conjunction with your reconstructive surgeon as to whether or not a patient is a good candidate. Phillips informed us of another procedure that has become more common for patients who have surgical defects from lumpectomy. This is called Structural Fat Grafting. “This procedure involves liposuction of fat from one area of the body and placing it into an area that is lacking tissue. If done properly, the majority of the fat will survive and fill in the defect.” Phillips wants to make it clear that mastectomies can be done safely with attention still being paid to the cosmetic outcome. “Based on the stage and location of the cancer, or if the surgery is being performed prophylactically, mastectomies can be ‘skin sparing’ or ‘nipple sparing’ and the decision where the incision can be best hidden are all topics that should be addressed with your breast surgeon and reconstructive surgeon.” In cases where it is safer to remove the nipples, nipple reconstruction is done to make the breasts looks as natural as possible, said Phillips. Phillips outlines the steps a patient will typically follow after a cancer diagnosis and/or learning they need to have surgery. “A patient will come to us after having seen a general surgeon who is planning on doing their mastectomy. Though she noted different approaches to reconstruction, it is mostly done through implant reconstruction. Phillips said,“General surgeons perform the mastectomy then the plastic/reconstructive

Beth Phillips surgeon places the tissue expander under the breast muscle to stretch the muscle slowly.” She notes that it is very important to stretch the muscle so it doesn’t thin out. If the patient requires chemotherapy or radiation, when it is completed, the doctor removes the tissue expander and inserts the implants. Sometimes the definitive implant can be placed at the time of mastectomy, this is called a one-stage reconstruction. Beth adds, “Most women can typically drive within two weeks and can go back to work 3-6 weeks following surgery. To clarify, Beth notes that the tissue expanders are the temporary implants and are filled with saline. Most patients choose silicone for their permanent implants because it tends to give a more natural look and feel. Phillips is aware of the old belief that silicone can be harmful and shares that recent studies have debunked this claim. Silicone is used widely and successfully. Beth takes a highly personal approach with her patients assisting Dr. Deboni in surgery and meeting with them during office visits and procedures. Her biggest piece of advice? “Women must be informed and know all of their available options,” states Phillips. “As with all major medical procedures, the more information gathered from their doctors, the better. If someone is considering reconstructive surgery in the future rather than immediately following their mastectomy, we highly recommend speaking to a plastic surgeon prior to making this decision. Factors such scar location or planning the surgery around radiation or chemotherapy schedules is beneficial to be considered in advance and can greatly affect outcomes,” she added. Caring for

Stray Animals this Winter

F

luffy coats and leather boots are starting to make appearances as the cold weather gradually returns to Syracuse. With the winter months looming overhead many are preparing for the worst by restocking their warm gear, but not everyone is so lucky. Although it is impossible to determine how many stray cats and dogs there are in the United States, the ASPCA estimates cats alone range up to 70 million. Rather than waiting to see a stray animal suffer during the blasphemous Syracuse winter, there are multiple ways you can help them to better survive the long months of excessive snow.

By Amari D. Pollard out of almost anything: a sturdy cardboard box, plastic garbage can or clothes bin. Create an entryway in the side of the shelter, just big enough for the animal to enter so that the bad weather can stay outside the “housing”. The shelter should be large enough to fit a number of animals in there comfortably, but shouldn’t be too tall or wide. The smaller the size the more body heat they can retain.

Provide Shelter If you do end up seeing a stray animal your first reaction may be to call a shelter, but Shelter Director at the Humane Association of CNY Christine McNeely says sending them to a shelter might be detrimental to their health. “It’s kind of a thin line because people want to bring them into us because they’re starving and it’s cold; but it can be very difficult for them,” said Christine. “You obviously want to help take care of the cat but at the same time it puts a lot of stress on them — to go from living outside to putting them in a cage… and being in that environment can be pretty terrifying.”Homemade shelters are simple and easy to make, they can be made

20

WOUNY.COM • OCTOBER 2015

Straw is the best material to line the shelter because it not only allows animals to burrow, but it doesn’t hold onto excess moisture. Blankets, towels and newspapers may seem like efficient resources for the shelter but they get wet easily and freeze. When it’s all put together, place the shelter in a location that’s easy to spot so it doesn’t require too much searching. And don’t forget to check up on the shelter every now and then to clean it.

Food and Water Dry food is a great source of extra calories and nutrition, and so is canned food as well; but don’t put out canned food as much because it’s higher in liquid content and may freeze during the colder temperatures. To keep the water from freezing put it in a container that is deep and wide. You don’t have to place the food and water within the shelter, but just close enough so the animals can reach it without compromising their comfort. The feeding and water stations should be protected. A creative way to do this is by building another shelter and placing it two feet away from the other one. Then create a canopy of sorts (tarps are cheap and are perfect as a canopy) between them by securing a wide board from one roof to the other. The food and water can either be placed under the canopy, or in the other shelter all together. Adopt Stray animals are always being dropped off at animal shelters in the winter, and space quickly starts to dwindle. So stop by a local animal shelter and see if there’s a dog or cat that you could bring home. Maybe you two can help keep each other warm. For more info contact the Humanecny 315-457-8762

Tiffani Lundy, Denika and Niece Ataliya

D

enika Lundy is a mother, teacher, aunt, entrepreneur, and breast cancer survivor. At the age of 27, it was confirmed that the lump found in her breast was Stage 2 breast cancer. Many of us never think that it will happen so young, but it does! Each year, approximately 200,000 women in the United States are diagnosed and one in eight American women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Hereditary breast cancer, caused by a mutant gene passed from parents to their children is rare however children of parents with the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation have a 50 percent chance of inheriting the gene. Denika Lundy is of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage and in her family, this gene is being passed down, ruthlessly and progressively. More specifically, woman of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage are 10 times more likely to have the BRCA1 and BRCA2 positive genes than the general population. It is known that 1 in 40 Jewish women of Ashkenazi descent are carriers of the gene responsible for hereditary breast cancer. Unfortunately, so many don’t know about this until it has already affected them or members of their family. Education and testing must be done in order to help identify their risks.

WOUNY.COM • OCTOBER 2015

By: Kristen Penfield THE EVOLUTION OF HER LOSS: All of the adult women in Denika Lundy’s life have been taken from her far too soon. Hereditary cancers can develop at younger ages as in Lundy’s family whom far too many have died from cancer at a very young age. Her Mother Robin, was only 45, her sister Dory, age 35, her aunt Cindy, who battled breast cancer for 15 years, died at age 48. The list goes on to include her Grandmother age 50, died of ovarian cancer, her great-grandmother of breast cancer, her grandmother’s sister of breast cancer and her grandmother’s second sister of ovarian cancer. Both Denika and her sister Dory were both diagnosed at age 27. As of today, only two of Lundy’s mother’s siblings have not been affected by cancer. To add to her tragedy, she lost her father to liver damaged only one year before her sister Dory’s passing. HER MEMORIES: “As a little girl”, recalled Lundy, “I remember seeing my Aunt Cindy bald and very sick. She was always wrapped in blankets. I didn’t know about cancer then, all I knew was Aunt Cindy was very sick. That’s how I remember her”. Denika was only fifteen years old when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She remembers a feeling of devastation, helplessness,

and fear. Trepidation, anxiety and fright are only a few of the overwhelming emotions felt when cancer viciously attacks a family one-by-one. Lundy was twenty when her mother passed away. After intense grieving over the loss of her mother she became stronger day by day, Lundy slowly was able to overcome her grief and found solace when she met and married her husband, moved to Florida, raising their two beautiful young sons Damian and Dimitrius. Although happy, she was missing her younger sister Dory who was living so far away in Upstate New York. HER OWN JOURNEY: At the age of 27, it was confirmed that the lump found in her breast was stage 2 breast cancer. “I knew from our history that I had to act fast,”admitted Lundy, “but it was fear and lack of insurance that kept me from going to the doctor for six month” she added. Denika now realizes that the delay in treatment, most likely advanced the stage of her cancer. She began chemotherapy treatments and underwent a bilateral mastectomy. “I was struggling, but determined to fight this disease,” she added, and she was winning! In Florida, she found it very difficult as she fought her battle against this debilitating disease. She struggled with her

The Memories marriage and there were simply no childcare or support groups available to her. She felt alone and terrified knowing she had already lost so many women in her family to the same disease. LIFE TAKES A TURN: After a year of fighting her own battle, Denika received a call from her younger sister Dory in Syracuse. She too, was diagnosed with breast cancer, but stage 1. Lundy recalled, “There was so much emotion. Yelling. Crying. Screaming. We knew we had to be together.” So Lundy moved back to Syracuse to help her sister through her battle, and to help with her then nine-yearold niece, Ataliya. “My sister and I had to be together. We had to heal together. We had to help each other. We took the time we needed to get through our battle”. As they were researching their disease and their options they became aware that within the inner-city minority community, receiving help was extremely difficult. Denika and Dory began writing down all the problems they were encountering that they felt could be and should be fixed. “Many young minority women in the inner-city are struggling. We are one paycheck away from becoming homeless. Dinner each night is a struggle, and getting rides to a doctor’s appointment is nearly impossible. Care for their children during appointments is difficult. Handling all of this while trying to fight cancer? Something had to be done.” Denika and Dory did indeed, do something about it. Their goal was to create awareness and change for young minority women, like themselves. They created, 2Sisters4Life,Inc., a non-profit organization that strives to educate and empower young women and men on the topic of breast cancer. Based on their experiences together, they knew firsthand that the care was not equal to that of their counterparts. Their experiences of being put aside based on their background and lack of insurance

were appalling. It was up to them to start spreading the word. “My sister and I began speaking to children at the middle school level. They also conducted seminars that included their personal stories, stats on women of color and their survival rates.”Lundy and her sister wanted to educate young girls that breast cancer can begin at a young age; that breast cancer does not discriminate. They also taught young girls how to perform a self-breast exam. It is a way to Empower them with knowledge so that they recognize warning signs, receive help immediately and improve the survival rate within the inner city communities.“We wanted to inform everyone about cancer”. It is through God and faith, that one must get their mind focused to conquer this disease. “You must believe in a higher power,” Lundy said. What is truly frightening is that if Denika waited any longer to go to the doctor, she would not be alive today. Of that she is convinced. “Women, men and girls of all ages must become educated and aware about breast cancer. It’s that simple”. Lundy said, “2Sisters4Life has discovered that informing both women and men about breast cancer is a way of instilling a strong sense of community connection and well-rounded support base.”Denika and her sister were making quite an impression. They were informing many and most of all they were saving lives. LIFE INTERRUPTED, AGAIN. Denika received a terrifying call from Dory, who was extremely upset and informed her that she had discovered a lump in her breast. Keep in mind, this is eight years after her completed bilateral mastectomy. They rushed to the doctors where again it was confirmed. Dory’s cancer was back with a vengeance. This time, stage 4 metastatic breast cancer and it had spread to her bones. Lundy recalled, her sister’s doctor looked at her and said

“If I were you, I’d travel the world because there is nothing we can do at this point”. Denika thought that this is not realistic or financially feasible. Two weeks after Dory was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer, the Lundy’s home burned to the ground. Terrifyingly, this left Denika and her family displaced for a year. Denika refused to accept it as yet another setback. Instead, she viewed it as a sign from God. She accepted some of the money that was desperately needed and used it as funds to travel with her dying sister. They went to Las Vegas, Jamaica, Mexico, and explored several states within the US. She vowed to make the last year of Dory’s life full of happy memories and experiences and adventure. This is also an amazing memory something for Denika to carry with her for the rest of her life. “Dory and I had so many laughs, and I have many great memories. We ate wonderful food, shared endless stunning views world; we truly ‘lived’ during the last year of her life. We brought her pain meds, as she was not feeling great all the time. We celebrated Dory’s last birthday, her 35th, in Mexico. I miss her so very, very much.” After lovingly assisting her sister in her last months, bathing her, doing her hair, and WOUNY.COM • OCTOBER 2015

Continuing the Mission nails, Dory passed away with Denika by her side. Denika made an important promise to her sister that she would take care of Dory’s daughter Ataliya, then 17. “It was July 9th, 2011,” said Lundy. “Dory told me she didn’t want to die. I told her that God was picking her and that she must trust that I’ve got this,” she added. Dory died peacefully. CONTINUING THE MISSION: Denika knew she had to push hard to continue educating woman and men on breast cancer through 2Sisters4Life, Inc. She vowed that day to continue in memory of her sister. In 2014, Denika moved to Africa for 3 months to educate and speak of prayer and faith. She spoke at Christian congregations in Africa’s French speaking nations. They translated her work to groups of over 150 people who wanted to hear her story. They wanted to know more so they could teach about breast cancer awareness. She has made a tremendous difference. One person can change the world! Today, Denika spreads her words, efforts and arms all around the Syracuse area. Aside from educating the youth and their families, 2Sisters4Life is building a mentorship program, scholarship fund and resource program to connect those affected by breast cancer with resources such as transportation, childcare, insurance and food. Denika stated, “I must keep the ball rolling in education. This can happen to

anyone. When someone gets cancer in a family, the entire family suffers and struggles. Too many times I have seen those in the inner city not get the same care as others. I will not remain quiet and must teach others to do the same.” Through 2Sisters4Life, Lundy volunteers at Susan G. Komen races. This past September marked the third anniversary of her own 5K run/1 mile walk at Longbranch Park in Liverpool

cancer at a younger age. Lundy stated, “Without a doubt, had I waited until I was 40 to have a mammogram as the ‘experts’ claim, I would not be alive today.” “Continuously, I get signs from my sister,” Lundy noted, “I will become cold on one side and smell my sister’s perfume out of nowhere. I know that it is Dory. It makes me happy.” Denika is currently writing two books, “Thank God I’m Alive,” a story of her journey, as well as a children’s book, “Damian’s Mom Has No Hair,” to help other children endure the pain and answer questions they might have to help children know they are not alone.

which helps in funding 2Sisters4Life. “It has been growing each and every year,” said Lundy, “I couldn’t be happier. All of the hard work is so worth it,” she added. 2Sisters4Life has a logo of back-to-back faces which is intentional. It represents Lundy and her sister Dory, who always has her back and that Denika is moving forward with their plan to make a difference in the world of breast cancer awareness. She is continuously working with Democratic NYS Assemblyman Sam Roberts of 128th district for mandated laws that would require coverage in ultrasounds for specific women with history of breast

Denika is motivated and continues to move forward in her quest to educate. She gathers strength from her sister’s daughter Ataliya, her sons Damian and Dimitrius and looks forward to welcoming a 9-yearold, French-speaking Shellington, from Gabon, Africa, whom she met during her stay and remained close. Shellington will live with Denika in Syracuse. Denika exclaimed, “It is only with Dory’s strength within me, that I carry on.” Denika Lundy can be reached at www.2sisters4life.com. Meet Upstate New York’s October Fresh Face

Erica Geremia By Amari D.Pollard

T

o the lacrosse world she’s known as Erica Geremia, one of the top lacrosse players in the country. She’s the star player who was named the IWLCA [Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coach Association] Attacker of the Year and the ECAC [Eastern College Athletic Conference] Division II Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year last spring. But even with all the accolades, and all the recognition, she’s still just Er to everyone who knows her. When Erica was about six-years-old, her parents introduced her to lacrosse as a way to keep her busy. They thought signing her up for travel teams and camps would help her build character and teach her how to be a team player. Gradually, lacrosse started to take over, and instead of shying away from the responsibility and intensity that comes with playing, Erica embraced it wholeheartedly. The Camillus native grew up in a town famous for breeding impressive lacrosse players — The West Genesee Women’s Lacrosse team won seven Class A State Championships. Being constantly surrounded by that type of winning culture was what inspired Erica to become the best. It was as if playing lacrosse wasn’t really a choice, but inevitable. “I came from Genny [West Genesee] so it was just in me to keep playing and keep getting better and better,” said Geremia. “It’s a fact that Genny is good at lacrosse, and I always wanted to be a part of that!” There’s an almost uncanny ease to Erica’s

30

game when she’s on the field. Whether she’s dodging an opponent or assisting a teammate, there’s a placid look on her face that says, “I can do this all day, everyday.” Maybe it’s because the field is home, a place where for those hours she’s out there the outside world doesn’t exist. All that’s left is her, her team and the field. “I love being challenged, I love the competition love everything about this sport! Especially the community of lacrosse players,” said Erica. During high school Erica was recruited to play at SUNY Cortland under the leadership of Kathy Taylor, one of the best coaches in the game. She spent two years as a Red Dragon, helping lead her team to two Division III Final Fours. But when Taylor announced she was leaving Cortland after six years to become the Head Coach at Le Moyne College, Erica couldn’t imagine playing without her for the last half of her college career. In a 2014 interview with Lacrosse Magazine Erica said, ““My gut and my heart said to stick with Kathy because she has done so much for me and I cannot thank her enough for that. She put a lot of good pressure on me to perform well at Cortland and I was able to succeed. I wouldn’t have done that without her.” Fast forward to the spring of 2015: Erica’s playing just as well, if not better, as a Le Moyne Dolphin. Although she had to transition into a new school, with new people and a new culture, Erica found her place… and having a group of 30 girls to

guide her along the way didn’t hurt. She often credits her teammates, along with her coaches and parents, for teaching her how to get better from her mistakes and how to keep grounded in a world that has eyes on her at all times. Many people have a flawed idea of what it means to be a college athlete — one composed of fame, parties and unfair privileges — but what they fail to realize is, it’s hard. Erica has to get up almost every other day at five in the morning to train and play for three hours before going to class; she has to perform every time she takes the field and has no room to slack on her schoolwork. Playing and going to school can be rather overwhelming at times, but Erica says she wouldn’t have it any other way. This is Erica’s last year as a Dolphin, and after Le Moyne she hopes to go on to graduate school where she can work towards becoming a teacher while also coaching. But before she looks too far ahead into the future, she’s set on ending her time at Le Moyne with a championship trophy in hand. Last season Erica and her team made it to the Division II NCAA Semifinals, and she doesn’t expect anything less from this upcoming spring. “The energy on this team, and dedication in this programming is outstanding. I love just being a part of this team,” said Erica. “I expect that our team is the best everyday and trying our absolute hardest.”

How to choose the right living room for you By: Morgan Marzano

W

eather you are looking for a more formal space to entertain and impress friends or satisfy the comfortable and functional needs of yourself and your family, there are lots of options to choose from. Moreover, it doesn’t mean you cannot have the best of both! Here are some great ideas and some questions you can use to help self-diagnose what the next upgrade to your living room can be to really transform your living space into what your definition of a dream room is. Starting with options for a more formal space: Make your space a bit more formal and fashionable. What are the key pieces in your room now? What is staying and what is going? A great way to incorporate special family heirlooms or pieces with sentimental value that will be staying in your room even when the older worn out furniture goes, is accessories. Choose the key colors in grandma’s favorite chair or the curio cabinet that you display your travel collectibles in, keep them in mind when you are choosing your coordinating accent pillows, throws, lamps, wall art, area rugs, and table top accessories. In this simple yet classic look we took a rather safe, neutral body fabric with some hints of gold and linen and some nice texture on the upholstery of the sofa and love seat and really made the room pop with some classic berry tones in the coordinating pillows, rug, lamps and accents. A nice more formal feature here, in addition to the larger items for this room, were also the matching leg styles of the upholstery pieces and the accent tables, with a nice deep espresso finish, partial glass inlay top and a beautiful classic turned leg. Other luxury features of this living room include: -Down blend seating atop a engineered hardwood frame for seated comfort -Hundreds of fabric options for both the body and pillow fabrics, including slip covers and performance fabrics that are washable and resistant to stains -The ability to order this same and other similar styles in a sectionals, chaise sofas, sleeper sofas and even cover your accent chair in your pillow fabric to give even more of a pop of color and pattern in your room Creating your fashionable space with a bit more family functionality.

How do you see yourself using this area the most? If important key functions in your room include things like movie night or game night, snuggling up with your “furry friends,” putting your feet up to read or chat, trying to sit and take a break while the kids play, or even hosting bunko night, but most of all, doing all of this and keeping the room looking simply crisp and clean, then this leather reclining set is a great lifestyle choice for you. Spaces with moderate levels of movement and activity should consider a darker more forgiving body color as well as a type of leather with the ability to wipe off spills, break in gently with use but keep that clean and crisp look and stay more resistant to scratches because of a nice even protected surface. A great option that includes the above is a protected genuine leather. This gorgeous transitional design is 100% genuine leather that is highly protected making it a fabulous choice for a fashionable and at the same time functional, friends and family room. What is even better about this piece is that it has hidden recliners on both ends that work on a button allowing you to simply hold the button on the side to adjust just the right height and level for customizable comfort. Genuine leather is an all natural material that contains properties that allow it to adjust to its environment. Many think that leather is either “hot” or “cold,” the majority of the time from experiences with materials like vehicle leathers. The leather of your vehicle is just adjusting to its environment - such that on a hot day the leather is warmer and in the winter it is cold. You will not have to worry about this fluctuation with the leather on your furniture with the more consistent temperature of your home as well as the leathers ability to adjust to your body temperature once you have sat down. Looking for comfort, family style... This family style sectional is such a great family room piece, allowing for maximized seating of large groups. The super sized cocktail ottoman is an inviting fun center piece that is multi functional acting as a place for a big serving tray for game day snacks or some lemonade breaks in the summertime as well as accommodating the need for gymnastics props or fort building for the kids. The family of fabrics that come on this sectional are all part of a collection called “Minx” which is such an appropriate name, given its ultra soft, cozy and cuddle-worthy nature. The relaxed style of the loose back cushions and big wide comfortable seating makes for the ideal seating arrangement for a family style room. The extended chaise seat on the end makes for the perfect place to put your feet up and relax. If your vision for your room is to create an easy to be cozy in space a family style sectional like this will complete that look and feel. s pumpkin spices invades our stores and fast food joints, the leaves begin to change, and little kids have one thing on their minds. Candy! With an influx of fall decorations also comes that special day where you get to dress up and people give you sweets. That’s right, Halloween is right around the corner! However, the holiday did not start off as such a festivity. Halloween, as we refer to it, originated in Ireland with the Celtics. Celts would wear masks and light fires to ward off the malevolent spirits floating around the night.

groups and Native Americans. In the 19th century, when Irish immigrants flooded America, they popularized the holiday. By the end of the 1800s America was experiencing a more modern version of Halloween. By 1950, trick-or-treating was a common event among neighborhoods, and the holiday has since become a national event. Now, to small children Halloween is a time of fun and tasty treats. To parents, not so

They believed that the time when warm summer shifted to harsh winter was associated with death. As a result, on one night the boundaries between the living and dead were indistinct. This celebration was known as Samhain. In addition to warding off ghosts, it also served to protect the crops in the coming winter. When the Celtics were later conquered by the Romans, the celebration was changed a bit. Samhain was combined with the Roman traditions Feralaia, when they honored the dead, and Pomona, when they honored the goddess of fruit and trees. Both related to human death and crops. Centuries later, when the Catholic Church got involved, they tried to make Samhain more of a religious ordeal. They named November 2nd as All Saints’ Day, also known as All Hallows. Samhain became the All Hallows Eve, which was shortened to Halloween. Halloween came to America, but was not a part of northern culture for a long time because of the strong Protestant population. Maryland and other southern areas were influenced by diverse European ethnic

Make sure that all the candy received is wrapped and not punctured and never accept homemade treats from anyone. Furthermore, travel in groups. It is the best way to ensure everyone’s safety, especially when walking along poorly lit streets. While many drivers are extra careful on this day, it is still hard to see dark figures after dusk. Reflective tape on clothing and costumes is another way of keeping your children safe. Halloween can also be a dangerous time for those who suffer from life threatening food allergies. Emergency rooms are full of children who while trick or treating may have accidentally ingested an allergen. These allergens include, peanuts, tree nuts, eggs and milk. The Food Allergy Research & Education Foundation launched the Teal Pumpkin campaign in 2014 in an effort to raise awareness about food allergies and promote inclusion of all people during trick or treating and other Halloween activities.

To participate, families would paint a pumpkin teal and place it outside their home on Halloween. This would indicate to trick or treaters that the family is offering non food Halloween treats or candy that is allergy safe. Additionally, fliers and posters of a teal pumpkin can be printed off from the FARE website and placed on the front door signaling that the home is allergy friendly. The Healing Power of Massage By Rachel Hogancamp, LMT

T

here are many ways in which we can take care of ourselves. Eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and engaging in regular exercise are aspects of self-care that we all understand and accept. However, many people raised in the culture of Western medicine still consider massage therapy to be an indulgence and, in overlooking its therapeutic benefits, deprive themselves of an extraordinarily effective avenue for healing. When is massage especially helpful? There are many circumstances in which massage is beneficial. When we are under stress, either personal or work-related, massage therapy can help clear those feelings of stress; it has a very grounding effect. People who have been sick find massage helpful in pushing through the last phase of their illness. During recovery from orthopedic injuries such as sprains, strains, and healing bones, massage can ease soreness and help restore range of motion. People suffering with chronic illnesses, from fibromyalgia to cancer, often turn to massage for comforting touch and peace of mind. Victims of abuse or sexual assault seek out skilled massage therapists to help overcome their lack of trust and fears around being touched. What if I’m under a doctor’s care? Massage therapists often work in consultation with physicians to ease retracted tissue in patients with back injuries and herniated disks. As patients transition out of clinical physical therapy, we collaborate with physical therapists to continue the healing process through different types of bodywork. We also collaborate with area orthopedists, sports medicine physicians, and athletic trainers to help athletes become more flexible and improve their ability to ward off potential injuries. Professional athletic teams all provide regular bodywork for their athletes: this was not the case twenty years ago but today the value of massage therapy for athletes is undisputed. What happens to the body during a massage? Bodywork can trigger a number of physiological responses that

enhance healing. These responses vary depending on the type of bodywork you’re having done. Generally speaking, massage enhances blood circulation, increases the flow of oxygen to the tissues and organs, releases toxins, loosens and elongates tight muscles, and slows the heart rate, all of which serve to reduce stress and increase energy flow, or chi, in the body. The overall effect for most people is a state of relaxation and an enhanced sense of wellbeing. How will I know which type of bodywork is right for me? When an experienced, licensed therapist meets a client for the

first time, they determine together which modalities are best for that person based on the client’s needs and goals. For example, if you are looking for a deeply relaxing experience to reduce stress and release toxins from your body, you might opt for a Swedish massage or a hot rock massage. If you suffer from myofascial pain, fibromyalgia, or limited range of motion, you might benefit from neuromuscular work with trigger-point massage. If you are an athlete seeking peak performance, sports massage can help you recover from overexertion and avoid injury. Shiatsu is a form of Eastern acupressure that addresses the meridians in the body, relaxes muscles, increases energy flow, and is helpful if you are suffering from stress and fatigue. Thai bodywork concentrates on stretching tight muscles; reflexology applies gentle pressure to the hands and feet to help balance internal body systems; craniosacral and polarity therapy help to rebalance the body’s energy fields. There are many approaches to healing bodywork that address a range of both acute and chronic problems. Having so many modalities to choose from is beneficial because different approaches work for different people. Massage is not about indulgence it is about taking care of yourself. Relaxation enhances healing, both physically and emotionally. Taking time to settle into your body, to breathe deeply, and to lower your level of stress should be part of preventive health care for all of us. Rachel Hogancamp is a licensed massage therapist. She is the director of RasaSpa and works in collaboration with Cayuga Medical Center at the Island Health Center, where she can be reached at (607) 273-1740. WOUNY.COM •
