TRY IT!: HOW TO CURATE AN ONLINE EXHIBIT
STEP ONE: CHOOSE YOUR TOPIC
STEP ONE: CHOOSE YOUR TOPIC 1. How specific is your topic? • Is it too broad? For Example: “I want to curate an exhibit about the western world.” • Is it too specific? For Example: ” I want to make an exhibit about one particular grain of sand.”
STEP ONE: CHOOSE YOUR TOPIC 2. Are there enough resources out there on your topic? • Are there at least three reputable studies, books or articles on your topic? • Even if your topic was chosen for you, are you able to find information on it?
STEP ONE: CHOOSE YOUR TOPIC 3. What is your angle? • Journalists use “angle” to mean the main theme or point of the story they are writing. • For Example, my topic could be “Sea Turtles in the Ocean,” but my angle could be “How Pollution Affects Sea Turtles in the Ocean.”
STEP TWO: CONDUCTING RESEARCH
STEP TWO: CONDUCTING RESEARCH • Primary Source – First-hand accounts of a topic, event or period of time. • Examples Include: a letter, a journal entry, a legal document, or a record of statistical data
• Secondary Source – An interpretation, analysis, or evaluation of a primary source. • Examples include: a journal article or a scholarly book about a topic or event
RESEARCH TIPS! • Collect as many primary sources as possible. • Use secondary sources to find primary sources. • Footnotes, Bibliography, or Works Cited
