Growing Tomatoes:

A Beginner’s Guide

BY RICK VUYST

V

egans have made vegetables voguish. What kind of food do you want to be associated with? This is an important question, because we take our food and eating choices personally. Healthy soil, sunshine and irrigation practices are the primary keys to food gardening nirvana. Positivity, self-care and mindfulness are aided by being surrounded by nature and eating a plant-based diet. Gardening is the ancient prescription for wellness. Plant foods can be polarizing: From Brussels sprouts to beets, celery to cilantro, olives to mushrooms and kale to lima beans everyone seems to have an opinion. While some want bacon and maple syrup with their Brussels sprouts, others would rather just pass altogether. Are lima beans a rich and buttery delicacy, or do they taste more like wallpaper paste? Some will defend lima beans voraciously and attempt to make converts of others.

7KH NH\ LV WR ÀQG IRRGV \RX ORYH DQG JURZ WKHP You need sunshine, good soil, nutrients and love.

Tomatoes Remember to look at the tag of the tomato plant you are buying. The tag will tell you if the plant is indeterminate, determinate or semi-determinate. An

20

indeterminate tomato will grow large and not set a terminal bud, meaning that if it doesn’t freeze come October, it will keep growing to the size of a large shrub! These are best planted in the ground with good plant supports to hold them up.

If you haven’t grown vegetables before, try some tomatoes, the gateway plant to vegetable gardening. Place them in a spot that allows for sunlight and air movement around the plants. A determinate tomato does set terminal buds, so they stay at a more manageable size, making them perfect for container growing. A semi-determinate tomato is between the two in size. These tomatoes need support but can be grown in large containers or in the ground.

With any container garden, remember to make sure that plenty of room is available in the pot for root growth and stability. They’re going to grow! To grow great tomatoes, make sure you have a good sunny spot and have prepared the soil with lots of organic matter. Tomatoes like a moist, well-drained soil. If the soil gets dry between watering, you are likely to have cracking and zippering of the fruit. They also like a boost of calcium to avoid blossom end rot on the fruit, so look for a fertilizer that has micronutrients including calcium. Another way to ensure good moisture availability is to plant them deep in the soil. You will see the main stem above the soil line on the young plants is “hairy” in nature. Roots will grow from that stem if planted deeper. Pluck off a few bottom leaves and place the tomato plant deeper than the existing soil surface in the pot. This will increase the depth of the roots searching for moisture and nutrients. ictoria Upton: She is insatiably positive and uproariously inspiring. Her passion is contagious, and her brilliance is XQPDWFKHG 6KH LV ÀHUFHO\ GHGLFDWHG WR RXU FRPPXQLW\ and a champion of diversity. Around here, we call her The Queen, a moniker she is more than deserving of. Twenty years ago this month, she created the very publication you hold in your hands as a positive force to uplift women and enhance our community and our experiences within in it. She has tirelessly supported local institutions through her volunteer efforts at the Community Media Center, Local First, Art Prize, Spectrum Health Community Engagement, GROW, Gilda’s Club, American Heart Association, Grand JazzFest, to name just a few. She has received numerous honors, including from the Van Andel Institute, the American Heart Association and the Grand Rapids Legacy Luncheon. In the early days of desktop publishing, Upton was taking business classes at Grand Rapids Opportunities for Women (GROW) when she was inspired to pursue the idea of a magazine that would elevate women and act as a champion of local businesses. For Upton, magazines had the potential to usher positivity, benevolence and joy into the communities in which they existed.

The idea of the magazine being a blank canvas was the thing that made my heart soar.â€? Armed with a clipboard and permission from the store owners, Upton stationed herself in the magazine aisle at D&W, asking every person who bought a magazine what they were interested in, and if there was a publication that featured local women and businesses, would they read it? “I wanted the magazine to be engaging,â€? she said. “Something you would be proud to have on your living room table. I wanted it to be colorful and vibrant with an uplifting and positive message. I wanted to lift women’s voices.â€? 2Q $SULO 8SWRQ¡V WHQDFLW\ ZDV UHDOL]HG ZKHQ WKH Ă€UVW HGLWLRQ of Women’s LifeStyle Magazine (then called Women’s Edition) hit stands. For 20 years, it has evolved with the advent of social media, revolutions in publishing technology and our ever-growing city; but the mission has remained the same. “Our mission is still to do good and put a spotlight on the best of our community,â€? Upton expressed. “We provide a welcoming invitation to participate in our community, and we have done that from day one.â€?

“I loved magazines, Upton expressed. “For me, as an artist, looking at a blank page is like looking at a blank canvas and seeing all of the potential that is there to make something wonderful.

The idea of the magazine being a blank canvas was the thing that made my heart soar.

Children outgrow their clothing and toys pretty quickly. Rather than discarding items that are no longer worn or played with, box them up and take your kids along to a local donation center or thrift store to show them how their clothing and toys can be reused. Use this as an opportunity to teach them how donating or recycling old items can drastically reduce the need to use natural resources to create new ones.

The Local

WHAT’S NEW AT YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS. BY SARAH ANDERSON

THE COTTAGE BAR What began as a prohibition-era sandwich sanctuary for factory workers to get their lunchtime burgers in 1927 has remained a local tradition 91 years late. Proudly stationed in its original location on 18 La Grave Ave SE, The Cottage Bar claims the title of Grand Rapids’ oldest operating bar and restaurant downtown. Stepping inside the unassuming downtown pub quickly reminds one that not everything needs to change. In its long standing history, the Cottage Bar has changed very little, a fact they are happy to boast. “People appreciate the fact that they come back and it’s the same,â€? Dan Verhill, owner, explained. “In this era of everything changing so fast, we don’t change at all. We just keep it clean and working.â€? The top item on the menu is the Cottage Burger. With two cheeses, smokey mayo, olive, lettuce and tomato nestled in a rye bun, this historical burger has gained national attention and won over the hearts of many. That’s not to discount the other offerings: Verhill describes amazement in those trying their wet EXUULWR :KHWKHU LW EH WKH IRRG RU WKH KLVWRU\ WKDW GUDZV \RX LQ \RX¡OO Ă€QG \RXUVHOI happily losing time among old regulars and new friends.

ZOKO 822 New to the restaurant scene, Zoko 822 planted roots on 822 Ottawa Ave NW and welcomed gin lovers and foodies alike. Boasting an extensive selection of gin cocktails, basque small plates and pintxos, which are traditional basque tapas not meant to be shared but rather eaten in one or two bites, Executive Chef Ryan Martin explains that each dish has its turn in the spotlight as restaurant-goers pour in looking to try something new. The ones that seem to be getting the crowds talking are the octopus, cazuela de arroz, patatas bravas and cider house pork. If you’re looking for another option to try, Martin suggests the roasted scallions. “It UHDGV UHDOO\ VLPSOH EXW LW¡V D UHDOO\ Ă DYRUIXO GLVK 7KHUH¡V D ORW RI KLVWRU\ ZLWK WKLV dish and the basque region of Spain,â€? he explained. Martin encourages patrons to “choose their own adventureâ€? as they journey through the unique menu, enjoy some gin while you’re there, and grab some items on the way out at the bodega with small grocery items or at the grab-and-go counter lunch service.

How to Transform Laundry Day into an Eco-Friendly Routine

rotecting the planet often seems like a Herculean feat, but actually, it’s the smallest and simplest efforts that have the most profound and long-lasting impacts. Laundry is a chore few people look forward to, but all people must do frequently– especially if they have a large family! Though typically thought of as a mundane task, washing and drying loads of clothing can be a huge energy and water-wasting activity. Fortunately, there are a few ways you can make laundry day more effective and eco-friendly.

Only Wash Full Loads Washing machines consume sustainable amounts of energy, so washing your clothing in bulk drastically cuts back on energy consumption. If you must wash small loads of clothing, pay attention to the water-level setting and adjust the machine appropriately.

Air Dry Hang-dry your clothing as often as you can. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that clothing manufacturers often recommend that certain fabrics be air-dried instead of machine-dried; however, clothing that is dryer-friendly can still be hung up. Air-drying greatly reduces the energy consumed on laundry day.

Choose Detergent Wisely Washing clothing in front-loading washing machines RU KLJK HIĂ€FLHQF\ WRS ORDGLQJ PDFKLQHV LV PRUH HFR friendly than traditional washers because they use less water. The American Cleaning Institute states that GHWHUJHQWV GHVLJQHG VSHFLĂ€FDOO\ IRU KLJK HIĂ€FLHQF\ machines ensure that clothing comes out well-cleaned.

Separate Clothing Items Blue jeans and bath towels can take a long time to dry completely. Tossing cotton t-shirts and other lightweight fabrics into the mix make it harder for heavy-weighted items to dry, which in turn causes laundry-doers to push the start button on their dryers multiple times; drying a load of laundry more than once consumes more energy. Separate items when drying so each load can dry in a single run. If necessary, air-dry stubborn towels and jeans.

The auction presents packages that offer enticing experiences such as a nirvana for the dedicated yogi or a weekend at Crystal Mountain, exposing bidders to the amazing activities Earth has to offer. The Blue Tie Ball is truly an event that deserves a mark on your calendar, but consider this year a duel celebration as the evening also commemorates WMEAC’s 50th anniversary. The halfcentury birthday calls for a touch of WMEAC nostalgia peppered throughout the evening, including program surprises and a video, as well as a focus on the future.

This year’s Blue Tie Ball showcases the “incredible state we live in,” WMEAC’s Director of Development, Mary Robinson, said. From live entertainment by local blues/funk/rock n’ roll band Hannah Rose and the GraveTones to auction packages and prize drawings focused on classic Michigan experiences, the event is undoubtably one designed by a team of environmentalists.

The fourth annual Blue Tie Ball takes place April 26 at the Goei Center from 6 to 10 p.m. Guests enjoy a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres cocktail hour before taking their seats at 7 p.m. to hear the presentation of the Hartwell Environmental Legacy Award and indulge in cuisine by San Chez Bistro.

Celebrate Earth Day All Month BY BRI KILROY

Join us as we take a “bite out of the Wisconsin culinary scene and travel to Milwaukee, Green Bay and Door County. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

E

arth has always been inclusive when it comes to inviting its inhabitants to join the international celebration that is Earth Day. The world’s varying geography makes for a dynamic collection of how each of the 193 countries show love to the planet, whether it’s advocating for the environment or taking a day to enjoy the great outdoors. Read further to discover the local opportunities to celebrate Earth Day to the fullest.

1. Attend the Earth Day Lakeshore Celebration in Grand Haven (April 21, 12:30-4 p.m.) West Michigan’s lakeshore is reputable for having some of our state’s most stunning views, so it makes sense for the City of Grand Haven to host an Earth Day FHOHEUDWLRQ WKDW ÀOOV WKH HQWLUH DIWHUQRRQ Starting at the Grand Haven Courthouse (414 Washington Ave.) the Green Parade leads earthlings to the Earth Day Fair at the Grand Haven Community Center (421 Columbus Ave.). The fair features booths showcasing environmentally friendly products, food, games, demonstrations and activities for all to enjoy. Festivities are free to attend and give visitors the chance to explore the lakeshore town.

4. Trek the Riveredge Trail Whether you have a whole day or just a moment to break away, the Grand River Edges Trail is a community treasure that offers a riverwalk escape without parting from the city’s urgency. The riverside path beginning at Fulton Street and continuing North until Leonard Street is an environmental gift that we haven’t had many chances to take advantage of over the last few months. Absorb the serenity a walk or run along the river will give you, free of charge.

5. Play in the Park Since we’re talking about the river, our local parks deserve a recommendation as well. Toss a Frisbee at Ah-NabAwen Park (220 Front Ave.) or pitch your hammock at Riverside Park (2001 Monroe Ave. NE) for a relaxing recline in nature. Giving yourself the chance to step away and regroup in a new setting paves the way for a calmer and more appreciative life.

2. Visit Blandford Nature Center for Their Earth Day Celebration 6. Bike Brewery Tour (April 21, noon-3 p.m.) If you haven’t experienced this neighborhood nature oasis, Earth Day is the day to do so; Blandford Nature Center is waving its admission fee and welcoming all ages to explore the 264 acres of property that includes weaving trails, educational buildings, a farm and recently added highlands. Enjoy special Earth Day activities throughout the grounds while immersing yourself in the tranquil nature of our planet.

Tour includes: Two nights at the beautiful Rowleys Bay Resort, complete with their famous Fish Boil, an ethnic dinner tour, shopping, an interactive “Ploughman’s lunch and a show at the Peninsula Players Theater in a garden setting overlooking the bay.

Because it doesn’t take a set of wheels to travel from one brewery to another in Downtown Grand Rapids, this Bike Brewery Tour includes an adventure along the White Pine Trail. The tour starts at Riverside Park and ends in either Rockford or Cedar Springs, depending on how far you want to pedal. Elk Brewing Company in Comstock Park, Bier Distillery, Rockford Brewing Company and Cedar Springs Brewing Company are all accessible from the White Pine Trail, and you can map out your trip with brew stops to break upthe miles.

hip-hop artist Lady Ace Boogie, was 12-year-old Linda Tellis. As a nod to celebrating our past and the lessons we’ve learned, Lady Ace shares advice she would give her 12-year-old self. “Push yourself past potential, she began, adding not to waste time sweating the small stuff. “There’s a whole world out there with the opportunity to become the best version of yourself. Lady Ace uses her music to drop a beat to topics she addresses with raw honesty, like confronting barriers and coming to terms with experiencing mental health issues. Her journey is showcased in her newest album, Don’t Box Me In, which makes its debut April 21 during the Lady Ace Boogie Album Release Party at The Pyramid Scheme.

The party, open to ages 21 and up, features Lady Ace delivering her latest masterpieces from Don’t Box Me In 0D\RU¡V *UHHQLQJ ,QLWLDWLYH &RPPXQLW\ at The Pyramid Scheme’s back room 7UHH 3ODQWLQJ *LYH (DUWK WKH SHUIHFW concert venue. The new album is the result of reaching a milestone in her work; she steps outside of the more aggressive tone of her previous album, Feel Good Music, to unveil the path she took to go from “just existingâ€? to living fully. While her honest lyrics demonstrate an empowering vulnerability, Lady Ace masters creating music that draws OLVWHQHUV WR WKH GDQFH Ă RRU ZLWK FDWFK\ hooks and an exposure to true hip hop. Joining the party is a vanguard of women artists who communicate through different musical genres while connecting for a lineup that Lady Ace marks as “a dream come true.â€? SuperDre (minimal techno beats), Molly Bouwsma Schultz (indie/soul) and Mama Sol (hip hop/neo soul) complete the saga, enveloping listeners in a night of authentic talent that celebrates the harmony of our differences. Tickets for the Lady Ace Boogie Album Release Party are available in advance at Pyramidschemebar.com for $10 or at the door for $12.
