A Note from the Editor Four years ago, stuck in a dark, relentless rain on a bustling street in Berlin, I attempted to read a map written in a language I didn’t understand to navigate a bike through streets I didn’t know. I had spent that last hour riding in the wrong direction until a panicky feeling in my chest alerted me to the fact that I wasn’t where I was supposed to be, and was in fact very, very lost. After falling off of my bike and failing to bridge the language gap with passersby, I found shelter from the rain in a small bar where I got my bearings and directions, and admittedly shed a few tears. I was frustrated, embarrassed and lonely, and my expectations were being challenged. I had embarked on my trip solo, traveling to Europe on my own in search of adventure. I couldn’t wait to meet people at my hostel; when I arrived, I was the only occupant. I anticipated the days packed with people, places and new things from dawn till dusk; I had traveled in January, when the sun sets in Eastern Europe suspiciously early, and my jet lag pulled me into a deep sleep that lasted well into the afternoons. It wasn’t how I pictured it; in fact, it was much, much EHWWHU )RU WKH Ă€UVW WLPH LQ D YHU\ ORQJ ZKLOH , ZDV DORQH DQG , OHDUQHG DQ important lesson: the most challenging moments are often followed by the most rewarding. On that trip, I felt isolated and empowered; disappointed and utterly ecstatic; scared and liberated. Among all of the keepsakes I collected on that journey, the most valuable one was this: Audacity. This month, our theme is “Dare to Venture,â€? and we bring you stories of local women who do just that, led by their own unyielding audacity. The Rewards of Traveling
T
his month, as we celebrate the spirit of adventure in all of its forms, we want to draw attention to the solo endeavor. While sharing a journey with others can be an incredible experience that can lead to the strongest of bonds, embarking on an adventure alone reaps rewards to be found nowhere else. Whether you are hiking one of Michigan’s stunning state parks, traveling to a new town or jetting across the globe, here are some of the treasures you will yield from your solo excursion:
You Will Learn Your Strengths and Weaknesses As you come up against the inevitabilities of traveling ODWH Ă LJKWV QDYLJDWLQJ XQIDPLOLDU FLWLHV ODQJXDJH barriers), your strengths, some of which may be surprising to you, will emerge. You will learn what you can rely on yourself for and what you are better off asking for help with, which leads us to our next point.
You Will Learn to Ask for Help No one can accomplish great things all by themselves. Even with all of the advantages of modern technology, you will have to ask for help, whether you are asking for directions or help interpreting a menu. In our everyday lives, we do not often face situations in which we must reach outside of our comfort zone and ask for assistance; doing so can be a beautiful, humbling thing that will remind you we are all in this together.
You Will Enjoy You Nothing allows you to enjoy your own company more than bearing witness to awe-inspiring sights and having only yourself to share it with. You will forge a deep and lasting connection with yourself as you are immersed in the beauty of our world, uninterrupted. Instead of turning to those next to you and saying, ´:RZ Âľ \RX ZLOO EH URRWHG LQ WKH PRPHQW DV \RX Ă€OO with wonder.
You Will Learn to Ask Yourself What You Want When you are traveling alone, your itinerary is yours to create. Depending on what your pup loves, that acknowledgment can be a treat, a pat on the head, some play time, or a simple “Good puppy! Another opportunity is when getting ready to go outside. Stand at the door with your pup on leash and simply wait. Don’t say anything. After a moment or two of staring at the door, he’s going to wonder why it isn’t opening yet, and he will look up at you (“Mom, what gives?). As soon as he looks to you, tell him what a good boy he is and open the door to continue on your way. Encourage eye contact whenever possible, especially in the face of distraction. Your pup will learn to “check in frequently when playing or while walking on leash, keeping him much more in tune with you!
Back-Up
What )LĂ€ PRYHV KHU ERG\ EDFNZDUG RU DZD\ from something.

Walk forward a step or two so that she is standing rather than sitting, and then take a step or two backward. Encourage her to step backward with you rather than turn around by keeping her sandwiched against the wall or fence. As soon as you see her move a foot backward, mark the behavior with “yes! and give her a treat. Work your way toward getting a solid 5-6 steps of backward motion before you start moving away from the fence or wall. It’s common for dogs to swing their hind end sideways once that barrier is removed, so be prepared to reinforce for a straighter path and not reinforce the crooked attempts. Hide & Seek
What: Fido seeks out his hidden human(s). Why: Hide & Seek builds enthusiasm and helps strengthen recalls (coming when called), and is a great way to burn off energy during bad weather.
How: Start with pup and human(s) in the same room. Each person should have treats on them. One SHUVRQ JHQWO\ UHVWUDLQV )LGR ZKLOH WKH Ă€UVW ´FDOOHUÂľ kneels down and excitedly calls Fido to “comeâ€? (note: kneeling is a much less intimidating body posture than bending over). As Fido approaches, tell him “yes!â€? and allow him to eat kibble from your hand. Meanwhile, the other hand should gently hold his collar (“comeâ€? is not complete until you have the collar in hand). Then the next person calls Fido, and repeats the process. Once the pup has gotten the hang of this roundrobin style of recalls, each person can begin stepping backward after each successful recall. This results in a small increase in distance for each repetition. Eventually, family members will begin stepping slightly out of view, and Fido will have to really listen WR Ă€JXUH RXW ZKR LV FDOOLQJ KLP DQG IURP ZKHUH This game can alsobe recreated outside within a fenced area (or with Fido on a tether or long-line), starting with the round-robin version and gradually building distance.
Touch
What: )LĂ€ WRXFKHV D VSHFLĂ€F REMHFW ZLWK KHU QRVH Why: Targeting behaviors are great for teaching patience and persistence, and can be useful in positioning your pup. You can even use targeting to help teach your pup to walk in heel position next to your leg!
How: Pick an item to target (I like to use a small piece of duct tape). Have some peanut butter and bite-sized treats on hand. Place the target at nose height (on a wall, a door, in your hand, etc.), and smudge a bit of peanut butter on the target. :KHQ )LĂ€ JRHV WR VQLII RU OLFN WKH SHDQXW EXWWHU PDUN her behavior with a “yes!â€? and follow it with a treat. In no time, the peanut butter will be gone, but she will go back and “bumpâ€? that spot to earn her
reward. As she starts to get good at it, you can move the target around a bit. Take baby steps here: a little higher, a little lower, a little to the left or right. Lots of success is important in the beginning. Once you can UHOLDEO\ SUHGLFW WKDW )LĂ€ LV JRLQJ WR EXPS WKH WDUJHW when presented with it, then you can add in the cue word “touchâ€? just before she does it. Hold out for that paw! As soon as his paw touches your hand, mark the behavior with a “yes!â€? and let him get to the treat. In the beginning, he may be quite enthusiastic and may be likely to use a digging motion with his paw. As much as possible, try to select and reinforce with a calm and gentle paw instead of an excited, digging one. As he starts to get the hang of the game, you can hold the treat in a closed hand, and slowly work your way towards moving your hand KLJKHU DQG KLJKHU RII WKH Ă RRU Once you can predict when Fido will touch your hand with his paw, add the cue word “pawâ€? In 1901, City Attorney John Patton contacted Andrew Carnegie, who promised $150,000 to the library in support. Former GR resident Martin Antoine Ryerson also offered $150,000 for a new building. The next year the building went up, with a central skylight and tall windows, granite from Indiana and marble from Italy and the United States. Fast-forward to 1962, when a $2.8 million plan was adopted to expand and update the structure. In 2000, three years after securing a capital millage, focus turned to renovating the building. Three years later, there is a grand opening marrying the two very differently constructed buildings together; walking through the front doors of the GRPL, one can see the original atrium and skylight in the Ryerson building.

Choose Meat

t’s hard to be a meat lover nowadays; with doctors and health nuts urging us to banish fat from our diets and cut down on red meat, focusing on things like tofu, quinoa and veggies instead, it’s no surprise people don’t associate meat with clean eating.
A
While it’s true that excessive consumption of red meat can lead to heart problems and other conditions, that doesn’t mean you should entirely give it up. In fact, when America made the shift toward less fatty foods, stocking the shelves with nonfat milk and yogurt, it didn’t make us any healthier, most likely because we cut back on the healthy fats as well as the harmful ones. What people may not realize is that meat, and red meat in particular, is rich in muscle-building amino acids. Plus, the fatty acids found in all types of meat help build your brain, which is 60 percent fat. Additionally, fat is a major source of energy, helps us absorb vitamins and minerals, and is essential for EORRG FORWWLQJ PXVFOH PRYHPHQW DQG LQà DPPDWLRQ This could be the reason that subscribers of the popular ketogenic diet (low carb, high fat) report weight loss, more energy and sharper mental focus. But just as there’s a difference between eating a home-cooked organic chicken and fast food chicken nuggets, there’s a difference between buying commercially-produced meat and naturally-raised meat from a butcher or specialty store. Once you understand the difference, you may think twice the next time you go grocery shopping. +XVEDQG DQG ZLIH WHDP 0DWW 6PLWK DQG &\QWKLD Esch, owners of Louise Earl Butcher in Eastown, are big believers in the sustainable and pastured meats movement, working exclusively with local farmers who raise their animals naturally and free of antibiotics and hormones.
Smith had this to say on the subject of fat and red meat: “People are starting to move away from the misconception that fat and red meat are bad for you. They’re also starting to understand that there are good fats and bad fats and that the fat from animals raised commercially is different than fat from wellraised animals.

In addition to having more healthy fat, grass-fed beef is higher in protein, leaner, lower in saturated fat and rich in Vitamin E, which wards off aging and keeps your immune system healthy. Her Legacy: Meet the Women of West Michigan Who Made History featuring Anna Sutherland Bissell BY RUTH VANSTEE | PHOTO COURTESY OF THE GREATER GRAND RAPIDS WOMEN’S HISTORICAL COUNCIL
A statue of Anna Bissell stands outside of Devos Place in downtown Grand Rapids.
Pioneering President and Chair of the Board of the Bissell Corporation (1846-1934) t age 19, Anna Sutherland married Melville Bissell, and the two became partners in business as well as in marriage. Moving to Grand Rapids in 1871 with two little girls, they opened a crockery and china shop, and Melville began tinkering with a “broom in a box. By 1876, they were producing carpet sweepers.

Anna complimented Melville’s creative genius with a strong business and marketing sense. Together they made selling trips to the East Coast and spent the winter months of 1878 in Washington D.C. obtaining a patent. As president, Anna created workman’s compensation and pension plans for her employees long before that became common practice. She supported several institutions, taking an active role in some of them, including the D. A Blodgett Home for Children and the Bissell House, a settlement house serving immigrants and workers in the North Ottawa Avenue neighborhood. Anna was inducted into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame in 1989.

30 & Fabulous
30 Years of the Grand Rapids Pride Festival
BY BRI KILROY | PHOTOS COURTESY OF GRAND RAPIDS PRIDE CENTER
T
he best thing about the Grand Rapids Pride Festival: 30 & Fabulous event is you don’t have to be age 30 to attend; you don’t even have to identify as “fabulous.
The only thing you have to be is yourself, and that puts you on the guest list for the Grand Rapids Pride Center’s largest fundraising party in West Michigan. On June 16 along Ottawa Avenue and at Calder Plaza, the GR Pride Festival celebrates 30 years of bringing the community together to applaud the treasure trove of personalities and preferences that make up our vibrant population. “It’s a celebration of being who you are and coming together, Rob Sparks, Co-Chair of the Grand Rapids Pride Center, said. “The entire world is invited. While the week leading up the celebration is full of events, the day of the festival is something you don’t want to miss; the party draws community members in brilliant attire and emanates nothing but the act of coming together to relish how far we have come. “As the world has changed and grown in acceptance, we’ve seen our attendance and festival grow, Sparks continued. “The uphill battle of executing the GR Pride Festival in 1988 and the years following is undeniable, but we have also advanced in acceptance and selfexpression to the point where the festival is bigger and more popular than ever.
50
As the world has changed and grown in acceptance, we’ve seen our attendance and festival grow. —Rob Sparks Sparks expressed that the change in language alone toward the LGBTQ community (the headline announcing the inaugural GR Pride Fest read, “Homosexuals Open Community Center) symbolizes a milestone in the way people view the celebration. More than 100 vendors position along Ottawa Avenue during the festivities to offer LBGTQ resources along with clothes and products available for purchase.
The festival pumps up the volume and kicks off an unprecedented lineup of entertainment at 6 p.m. Performing artists include former American Idol Ă€QDOLVW 'DYLG +HUQDQGH] $XVWUDOLDQ VLQJHU VRQJZULWHU %HWW\ :KR DQG 5 % SRS YRFDO JURXS (Q 9RJXH '- .HOOHU DQG ORFDO SHUIRUPHUV Ă€OO WKH SDUW\¡V SOD\OLVW before then. Regardless of whether or not the music is enough to feed your energy, food trucks and beer sponsor, Bell’s Brewery, are onsite to give you a little extra. The all-inclusive guest list includes the whole family; the celebration is family-friendly and has a kids tent for the little ones to partake in activities and fun. Join GR Pride in celebrating 30 years of creating a platform for everyone to express themselves. Tickets to the GR Pride Festival are available through GRPride.com or at the festival entrance.
