ne of the most common misconceptions about relationships is that they should KDSSHQ HIIRUWOHVVO\ ZLWKRXW FRQĂ LFW RU discourse. Sure, things may seem to fall into place and be perfect in the beginning, but the honeymoon phase can’t last forever. When things start WR JHW GLIĂ€FXOW DQG \RX¡UH XQSUHSDUHG IRU FRQĂ LFW LW can be shocking. We must shift our understanding of relationships from what we see in popular media to what happens in real life. Having to work at it doesn’t mean you’ve failed in your relationship; in fact, it’s just the opposite! Happy, long-lasting relationships take effort. In order to enjoy the good, you have to address concerns that arise. Much like a delicate Ă RZHU UHODWLRQVKLSV WDNH FRQVWDQW FDUH WR Ă RXULVK DQG be sustainable over the years. Here are some tips to keep your relationship thriving.

Discard Expectations Wishing your partner will do something to make you happy is setting yourself up for disappointment. You cannot rely on him or her to be your sole source of happiness. The pressure of performance can be crippling to anyone and cause resentment to build. Self-Development While relationships are a team sport, it’s important not to overlook the value of self-development. Before you joined forces, you were on your own; you had your own set of dreams that you wanted to accomplish. Now, many of your goals include a “weâ€? aspect, but don’t forget to cultivate things on your RZQ $ UHODWLRQVKLS LV IXOĂ€OOLQJ ZKHQ WKHUH LV D PL[ of individual and joint goals. When you overlook your own individuality, feelings of resentment can arise when working toward a joint objective or in the case that your partner is pursuing their own plans without you. It’s one thing to admire a couple you see in a TV show or a celebrity tabloid, but it’s another when you use it as a comparison to your relationship. You may idolize a celebrity couple because their life looks so easy/romantic/sexy, but you only see what is shown. Instead of using media as a checklist against \RXU RZQ UHODWLRQVKLS VLW GRZQ ZLWK \RXU VLJQLÀFDQW other and discuss what your ideal partnership looks like. If you are on the right track, great!

If you decide changes need to be made, even better! Keep the communication channels open and clear.

Sex Check-in Speaking of communication, talk about your sex life. Are you happy with it? Do you want more? Do you want to slow it down? Your partner isn’t a mind reader, and if things have been feeling off in the bedroom, ask them about it! If you are experiencing a sexual frequency mismatch, here is a quick way to get to the bottom of it: Write down how many times you’d like to have sex per week. Then write down how many times per week you think your partner would like to have it. Have your partner do the same. Share results with HDFK RWKHU DQG ÀQG D VFKHGXOH WKDW ZLOO ZRUN IRU ERWK of you.

Drift into the Ethereal Nature of

Ann Teliczan

BY SARAH ANDERSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TWO EAGLES MARCUS

Women’s LifeStyle Magazine • May 2018

;

urled up on the couch in her home in Ada, Ann Teliczan giggles as she reveals that one of her favorite past times is running through the woods barefoot. Much like her artwork, Teliczan is uncategorizable.

Turning her love into artwork was a natural progression that began 15 years ago. “Flowers make a really good subject matter for art because they’ve got so much color and a variety of shapes, texture and movement in them, she explained.

A beautiful juxtaposition of what is expected and what is reality, Teliczan brazenly embraces each aspect of herself; she is authentic to her core.

About eight years ago, Teliczan’s work began to gain recognition and started to display in major installations across the country. Today, she has installations of 60 or more pieces in hospitals in Tulsa, Oklahoma; Jersey Shore; Long Island; Houston; Dallas; Dayton; Fort :D\QH *UDQG 5DSLGV $OH[DQGULD 9LUJLQLD and Florida.

Born to a Baptist minister and a well-known Christian author, Teliczan’s life began in Los Angeles. At the age of 4, her family moved to northern Washington, where her love for art emerged. Her parents always saw the artist within her.

Her art is widely accepted across different venues. What is it that makes her work so appealing to display on any wall?

“My parents have pictures of me drawing as a little girl when I lived in Washington,â€? Teliczan recalled. “My mom would say, ‘You know, Annie, you’re an artist.’ I thought she was telling me that to make me feel good; I thought that everybody loved drawing, creating and making things,â€? Eventually, Teliczan landed in Wheaton, Illinois with her parents and three younger brothers where she spent most of her youth. Her dad’s job took her family to Grand Rapids, where she studied illustration, graphic design and photography. Teliczan’s career began in advertising. She worked at Gemini Publications, was a national advertising and PR director at Brooks Shoes, and then went to work for an ad agency all the while quietly creating art in her free time. On the same day Teliczan took a leap of faith and quit her job to fully commit to her own work, she was met with a phone call from Skyline Art Services, a major art consultant in Houston who recommended and sold her work. “[They were calling to tell] me that my work had just been accepted for this huge project at Fort Belvoir, in $OH[DQGULD 9$ DQG WKH\ ZDQWHG WR PDNH VXUH , KDG time for it,â€? Teliczan recalled. From this point on, Teliczan had complete control over her schedule and was able to devote more time to her art. She was consumed with drawing, painting and constantly creating new techniques. If it gave way for the opportunity for Teliczan to create, she dove in: photography, video, graphic design, and pottery, to name a few. “At one point I had a design studio set up with my computer; a black and white dark room in my basement; a full setup to hand color my black and white photos with Marshall’s Oils; a potter’s wheel and a kiln,â€? Teliczan mused. She began a successful ad agency, AT Media Studio, established herself as an HDR photographer with work appearing in Mashable and Oprah Winfrey’s newsletter DQG OHW KHU Ă RUDO DUWZRUN Ă RZ IUHHO\ IURP KHU DQG LQWR venues throughout the world.

“I think that it’s something that pretty much everyone can relate to, Teliczan speculated about her artwork’s popularity. “They give people a sense of joy and energy and at the same time they’re peaceful and relaxing. Lucent by Ann Teliczan

“That’s my inspiration: When someone looks at my work it makes their day a little better and them a little happier. She splits her time among all three of her passions, each holding a special place in her heart. Out of her unassuming basement studio with decorative string lights strewn around the ceiling and quirky memorabilia from her family proudly displayed, Teliczan creates works of art.

Plant Lilies for Elegant Summer Blooms BY MELINDA MYERS

And best of all, with very little care, you’ll be enjoying them for years to come! Plant various types of lilies to extend your enjoyment from early summer into fall. Five Steps to Complete Postpartum Recovery BY CRYSTAL FRAZEE

Formulating a plan before the birth allows you to consider what makes you feel supported and calm. It gives you time to ask for help in advance and create clear expectations so you can enter the unknown WHUUDLQ RI PRWKHUKRRG ZLWK D OLWWOH PRUH FRQĂ€GHQFH and ease. Decide who you want visiting you and when. Consider limiting guests in the early weeks so you can fully focus on resting and processing your experience. This is an occasion in your life where it is perfectly reasonable to attend to your own needs instead of the hopes of others. People enjoy being invited to help, but you must decide what type of support is most meaningful.

28

Ask friends and family ahead of time to be a part of your recovery plan and tell them how to contribute. Conserve your energy by having someone bring you food, run errands, pick up groceries, do light house cleaning, play with your toddler, or hold the baby while you rest. Don’t forget to communicate these desires to your partner, as they are an important gatekeeper to manage visitors. What self-care rituals will support your needs? Would a salt bath, gentle massage or yoga ease your sore muscles? Does journaling or talking to a trusted friend help if you feel vulnerable, overwhelmed or even ecstatic? Give yourself permission to ask for what you need and receive it open-heartedly. Know that a healthy and happy mother is what’s best for your baby!

:j]Yl`]

Connecting to your breath postpartum will help you to do two important things: reconnect to your body and stay present in the moment. In order to birth your baby, your energy is focused on opening and letting go. Postpartum is the time to focus on closing and drawing inward. Allow yourself physical and mental rest to restore at the deepest level. As the saying goes, “Five days in WKH EHG Ă€YH GD\V RQ WKH EHG DQG Ă€YH GD\V DURXQG the bed.â€? That’s 15 days of staying close to your room, keeping your legs together, and minimizing movement and unnecessary social interactions. This allows your pelvic tissues to heal, your internal organs to reorganize, and your mind a chance to integrate the experience without any additional input. Any extra energy is conserved for recovery and bonding with your baby. Plus, getting as much rest as you can will help restore your hormones and circadian rhythm. Rest doesn’t mean you have to sleep when the baby sleeps. Plan restful activities like reading, journaling or meditating to relax during down time and make a serious effort to stay off of devices during nightime feeding sessions.

In order for your tissues to heal optimally and to make the healthiest breast milk (if you’re nursing) you need to eat nourishing whole foods. It’s important to limit sugar intake and processed foods and amp up the nutrient dense options. Focus on eating a diet high in clean protein to support recovering connective tissue.

Eat lots of healthy fats like coconut oil, avocado, olive oil, grass fed butter, and nuts and seeds along with a variety of vegetables. Consider drinking bone broth or taking a high-quality collagen supplement too. Ask for support to have these foods available. If you’re having people bring meals let them know what types of foods you want, and hold on the casseroles! Soups and stews are good options at this time.

Create an Outdoor Space

An excellent way to enjoy the outdoors is to make your patio or deck feel like an extension of your home. Think of it as the room you never knew you had! A deck or patio can function as a gathering space or a place for respite and lounging. Keep in mind the following three tips when you embark on shaping up your outdoor sanctuary.

WHAT’S NEW AT YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS. BY SAMANTHA SUAREZ

MEXO 118 Fulton Street East.

A

t MeXo, you get more than just dinner and drinks: You get an experience.

This modern Mexican restaurant and tequila/mezcal bar opened its doors to downtown Grand Rapids on April 17, and is the most recent venture of the CDKI Dining restaurant group. Leading its kitchen as executive chef is the talented Oscar Moreno, whose menu is described as a fusion of pre-Hispanic and modern Mexican cuisine. What does that mean exactly? Basically, if you’re in the market for a burrito or ground beef tacos with cheddar cheese, look elsewhere. Instead, enjoy ahi tuna ceviche with avocado, pork belly pastor with pineapple and salsa, or carne asada made of thin-cut ribeye.

Don’t worry: they do serve guacamole and it’s awesome.

A few standouts are the MeXo Oaxacan Old Fashioned and the Tamarindo cocktail. Another bonus? Instead of tres leches cake, you get quatro leches. TILLMAN’S RESTAURANT 1245 Monroe Ave. NW

F

rom the moment you step inside Tillman’s, you’ll instantly realize that this is not the typical restaurant millennial bloggers normally rave about. This old school Chicago-style steakhouse is dimly lit, vintage in decor, straightforward in its menu, and feels like it’s been around for ages. <RX FHUWDLQO\ ZRQ¡W Ă€QG PDQ\ FUDIW beer choices or cocktails with quirky names on their drink list. Tillman’s serves up delicious portions of traditional and regional American fare in an old-school atmosphere. While they are best-known for classic dishes like prime rib, twice baked potato and escargot, many also show up for their slightly more uncommon items like sautÊed frog legs or liver and onions. Most of their lunch items are less than $9 and many dinner options are $15-$20. If you bring an old friend or an out-of-town guest there for a good meal and conversation, you are sure to impress. Don’t forget to order a Brandy Alexander dessert cocktail. Tillman’s is open from Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 11 a.m.-1 a.m.

fried or grilled, their tasty gumbo, or the fact that many of their ingredients are actually shipped from South Carolina, it’s safe to say that their concept is one that is unique to the Grand Rapids food scene. Beyond the food, Carolina Lowcountry Kitchen boasts a full-service bar with draught and bottled beer, wine and spirits with an emphasis on craft cocktails, communal punches, wine, and ice cream drinks such as Grasshoppers and Hummers. Carolina Lowcountry Kitchen is open for brunch on weekends and for dinner from Monday through Friday.
