omen in business – women in charge! Powerful thoughts for powerful women. As I write this I am on a “working vacation” in SoHa – surrounded by family and enjoying myself immensely. Forcing myself to pause, I think back to how impossible this would have been not too long ago. Many things have changed to bring make this opportunity available.

First, I made this happen for my family and not that long ago only the “male” provider in the family could have made these arrangements. Second, there’s the technology that allows me to respond and interact with customers and co-workers while miles away from the office. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, there’s the fact that in today’s world the “playing field” is becoming increasingly more level between males and females which enables us to make independent decisions and business calls that are responded to and, for the most part, respected by all players. I am definitely feeling empowered! Within these pages we hope you’ll find inspiration and empowerment to continue your journey to becoming the best person you can be. Stories of women in our community that have overcome the obstacles in their way and never let barriers keep them from moving forward, even if that meant going around said barrier. Wherever you are on your own personal path, we wish you only the best. Just know that YOU CAN DO IT! Women’s LifeStyle is pleased to announce Women’s Mastermind, a Premier Women’s Organization dedicated to all career women wherever they are in their professional lives. Our first meeting will be on October 10th from 11:30 – 1 pm. at the Fetzer Center. It will be a luncheon and introductory meeting. WA L K I N G T H E L I N E : ASSERTION VS. AGGRESSION

BY KERRY HART, LLMFT

T

here is a fine line between being assertive and aggressive when communicating, which once crossed can influence many aspects of your life. What’s the

difference? Being assertive is expressing yourself in a clear and concise way while still being respectful to those around you. Communicating aggressively is being dominate to forward your own agenda. The core distinction between these two modes of communication centers around emotional intelligence; being able to read those around you before stating your feelings will make all the difference in how your point of view is received.

Career

In management, being able to lead clearly and confidently is the key to running a successful organization. An assertive manager will be friendly, make eye contact, remain conscious of the mood of their team and will be able to control their reactions during stressful times. Aggressive managers, on the other hand, will micromanage and lead with fear while making their team feel untrustworthy and undervalued.

Kids

Family members have a way of making us feel like children all over again no matter what age we are. If you are facing a family member who has an aggressive communication style, keep cool, take a deep breath

September 2017

have tunnel vision when it comes to getting their way. Needless to say, these behaviors are not conducive to being in a successful relationship. Being aware of your partner's feelings and emotions are key pieces to making your partner feel loved and appreciated. Should a lover’s quarrel come to light, state your feelings assertively, while allowing your partner to do the same. Any sign of aggression will halt positive progress and may create distance between you two.

...being able to read those around you before stating your feelings will make all the difference in how your point of view is received.

The way you communicate with your children teaches them how to set limits and cultivate healthy relationships with others. This is perhaps the most important time to distinguish between assertion and aggression as you are setting an example for young minds. Being aggressive with your children will intimidate them, which will result in them learning how to bully others. Showing respect while disciplining your children will get them to focus on improving behavior rather than accumulating guilt about their actions. Instead, be assertive with your children to dissuade tantrums and bad behaviors while teaching positive lifelong habits.

Partners

and take a break. Reacting aggressively will only result in calamity. Mirror back the individual’s feelings, reflecting exactly what you just heard them say. Should you disagree, do so assertively, but only after restating the point they just made. This will help the aggressor feel validated and heard, and less likely to respond in an even more volatile tone.

The College of New Jersey completed a study on how aggressive people relate to others and the findings were not favorable; their results demonstrate that confrontational people tend to tune out others and

This can be a slow process. Should you need to change your approach, remember to be patient with yourself. Take your time and allow yourself to develop the skills you need to communicate assertively. If you feel yourself getting heated, take a time out and reassess. The positive benefits of being assertive far outweigh any results that may come from being aggressive with those around you.

DIY Makeup By Hillary Wild

S

eptember is a busy month as we transition from summer to autumn with

a new school year approaching for many. It’s also a time to start thinking about fall makeup trends and caring for your skin through the upcoming chilly months.

Here are three simple DIY recipes for a skin nourishing and gorgeous cheek stain, hydrating beet red lip gloss and a decadent and hydrating body bar. These products have beneficial properties for skin from hydrating to helping with anti-aging and promoting skin cell renewal. Plus, they come with the added satisfaction of handcrafting them yourself!

Gorgeous Cheek Stain

In a microwave safe bowl, melt a tablespoon and a half of cocoa butter. Once melted, take the mixture out and add about 1 teaspoon each of coconut oil and shea butter, 20 drops of beet juice, 5 drops carrot seed essential oil and 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon. Whisk well until all inrgredients melt completely and there are no clumps. Pour into a container and put in the refrigerator until it sets.

Decadent Body Bar 3 tablespoons cocoa butter 1 tablespoon coconut oil 1 tablespoon shea butter 10 drops of scented essential oil

Things you will need include cocoa butter, shea butter, coconut oil, carrot seed essential oil, scented essential oil (of your choice), cinnamon, beet juice and silicone or plastic mold.

Follow the melting and mixing directions for the cheek stain. Instead of adding beet juice, only add essential oil. Pour the mix into a mold and put in the refrigerator until it sets.

NOTE: These products can be found at a health store. You can have fun and tweak the recipes as you get to know the products to suit you and your preferences.

Enjoy the products you create. Your skin will thank you!

Beet Red Lipgloss

In a small bowl, mix a tablespoon or so of shea butter with ½ teaspoon of beet juice (more or less depending on what you like) and 4 drops of scented essential oil. Mix thoroughly and put into a container.

Staying Healthy at The Office BY WLM

M

any people find themselves hunching over a desk or clicking away on their keyboards for hours on end each day as they steadily check off tasks on their daily workplace schedule. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that working profedsionals spend an average of 8.5 hours per day at work and much of that time is spent sitting at a computer. It’s no secret that staying sedentary for long periods is detrimental to one’s health. Add in all of those hours in front of a glaring computer monitor, and it’s clear why it’s necessary to take steps to ensure your 9-5 isn’t having an adverse effect on your physical well being.

GET UP

Most modern workplaces are built around sitting, so it’s up to workers to carve out time to stand up & stretch throughout the day. Sitting still too long can compromise posture, leading to craning of the neck and joint problems. Get out of your chair every hour to walk around the office to restore blood circulation and loosen limbs. Take advantage of other opportunities to stretch your legs: Instead of sending an instant message or making a phone call to a coworker, visit them in person.

BROWN BAG IT

By the time lunch hour rolls around, chances are you’re famished. While it’s convenient and tempting to go out to lunch regularly with your coworkers, consider packing your own. Bringing your lunch to work allows you to monitor and control the foods you are putting into your body and cut out empty calories. Not many people have ample time in the morning to scrounge up a healthy meal; prepare your lunch the night before so it’s ready to grab and go when you’re rushing out the door. Be sure to include some smaller nutritious snacks chock full of protein and carbohydrates to keep your energy levels up through the day.

REFRESH

Stuffy & stale air permeating the office can make you feel fatigued and unfocused. Also, spending too much time behind your desk may contribute to feelings of stress and tension. Use your lunch hour to get outside & soak up the natural light instead of eating at your desk under bright fluorescents. Break up your busy day with a brief mid-afternoon walk outside of your office to clear your mind and take in the fresh air.

DISINFECT

Sickness spreads quickly through offices, meaning when one person gets sick, it’s only a matter of time before the whole team is sniffling. Keep your desk drawer stocked with alcohol swabs or disinfecting spray to wipe down doorknobs and handles, and routinely clean your phone, keyboard, mouse, touch screen and desk surfaces to keep unwanted germs at bay.

GIVE IT A REST

A long day in front of the computer screen can result in headaches, bloodshot eyes and decreased energy. Close your eyes and look away from the monitor every 20 minutes. Focusing on objects of varying distances can help keep the eyes strong and reduce fatigue. If you have to keep your eyes on the screen for a prolonged period of time, change the settings on your monitor so the lit screen is the same level of brightness as your surroundings and adjust the text size and contrast to what is comfortable to read without straining your eyes.

How to Manage

Stress

BY: ASHLEY CARTER YOUNGBLOOD, LLMSW, LLMFT, CADC

Ashley Carter Youngblood is both a clinical Social Worker & a Marriage & Family Therapist at Meaningful Connections Counseling in Kalamazoo. She especially enjoys working with women & women’s issues in her practice in order to encourage female empowerment.

Let’s face it: we are all busy. There is a lot to balance as women – work; family; friends; hobbies. But, how do we manage it all? How to we take care of ourselves & also manage the stress of the day-to-day? Stress is not Necessarily Bad

One thing to remember is that not all stress is bad. The stress response is survival. It is the hard-wired brain response that allows our bodies to be ready to fight or flee that predator we stumble across in the jungle. Stress is also what helps us perform under pressure. So, while stress can be... well… stressful, we cannot escape it and we need to learn how to manage it.

Where to Begin

While it is true that we cannot escape it, we also cannot be healthy in a chronic state of stress. According to the American Psychological Association, chronic stress can result in things like headaches, chronic muscle tension, heart issues, menstrual irregularities, and prolonged stomach issues. No one wants that! So, this means that we must find a way to manage our stress. If we are going to manage stress, we need to remember that it is not the emotions themselves that create stress, it is our response to them. For example, when is the last time “white-knuckling it” while telling yourself “I can’t be angry!” helped? We need take a step back and remember to tap into our bodies and do things that naturally reduce our stress.

Stress Management Tips 1) Give yourself permission to relax. - If we are constantly on the go, we tend to forget about ourselves. So, do something fun and relaxing for yourself to bring your stress level down, even if it is just for five minutes. 2) Listen to your body. - How do your shoulders feel as you read this article? Are they at your ears? If so, let them drop. What is your breathing like? Are your breaths shallow? If so, take a moment to focus on filling your lungs as full as they will go. Use the natural wave of the breath to ground you and bring you back to the present moment. 3) Know your limits. - I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you cannot do it all. As awesome as you are, it is just not possible. When you are already overwhelmed, know when to stop taking things on. Allow yourself to not do it all and know when to ask for help. As women, we tend to want to help everyone before ourselves. But, don’t forget to make yourself a priority, too. 4) Be mindful. – I’m going to pause here for a bit. As a therapist, I have seen a lot of stress. But, the biggest thing I have learned is that stress, ironically, gives itself its power. Our fear of stress, the anticipation, and the stories we tell ourselves about what it “will be like” make it worse. So, practice these tips by giving yourself permission to take time and listen to your body. Accept your emotions, bodily sensations, and inner dialogue about the situation without judgment. When you are reading this article, really read this article, when you are taking a shower, really be in the shower. Use small moments to re-focus your attention. A final thing to remember is that stress and anxiety often feel the same. So, if you just can’t shake your stress, consider talking with a professional to manage those symptoms. Let reaching out be a way that you practice caring for yourself.

Work Place Denim – Done Well “I’m all done with suits.” I can still clearly hear the response spoken in a networking conversation several years ago.

For many, that may very well be the case, as societal choices and dress policies have relaxed throughout the years. It unfortunately has left many in a conundrum of what really is appropriate to wear to work, and even more so when considering denim in the workplace. In the “I’m all done with suits” scenario, she most certainly should be done with a suit. Having moved from a corporate position to working as a barista in a coffee shop! Unless worn as a uniform and part of the company brand, a suit would not have been the correct selection in work attire. With many organizations having a casual Friday dress policy that includes denim, and a few companies adopting denim as a daily dress option, follow these tips to denim ‘done well’ in the workplace.

Frayed Vs. Worn

Worn denim, with thinning, ripping, fraying inner thigh, knee or hems are best kept for casual and non-workplace dress. Although certainly on trend, ‘frayed’ denim may or may not be an option for the work place. Creative to casual manufacturing industries may best suit a frayed denim look. Check your dress policy for approval however.

Premium or Not

Premium denim (PD) is often a heavier more durable jean stock. It allows for additional treatments that may occur to the fabric, such as destroying or aging (fraying). Additional distinctions in PD include stylized stitching that sets the brand apart from other “premium” and “non-premium” brands, distinguishable labels, and contoured cuts for better fit and in a variety of fits to cater to different body types. Since PD brands cost more, meeting your budget needs or finding a fit that suits you may answer your question as to wearing “premium” or “non-premium” brands. Best options in work wear denim, whether premium or not, should be visually clean and free of distractions.

Pairing Partners

Complete your look as you would any other professional

business casual ensemble. Pairing your denim first with a complementary top or shirt, then a cardigan or novelty jacket in a refined fabric and Classic style. This will give you garments that easily mix and match together, with denim or the occasional needed dress pant, creating multiples of ensembles from only a few garments.

Finishing

Workplace denim looks need to be ‘finished.’ By that I mean that the garments are worn along with a current styled haircut, natural finished make-up application, and coordinating footwear and accessories that complete your ensemble. Finally, in navigating the denim decision, always consider the industry that you work in, the people that you work with and encounter, the environment that you work or meet in, and lastly your own career and personal brand aspirations. BY RICK VUYST

eptember is an ideal month for innovation in the garden. Fall Mums, Asters, Pansies, fall annuals and spring flowering bulbs arrive to help you rejuvenate your landscape canvas. It’s truly a stroke of genius to garden in September.

Plants put in the ground have plenty of time to root before winter & will be well established to perform in spring. Peonies, Iris and other perennials can be divided and moved. Tulips, Daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs can be planted.

Flowering shrubs, perennials, and trees establish well when planted this month. Here are some ideas for artistic splashes of color for your landscape that you can invest in now.

Star of Persia

For an artistic stroke to your landscape, plant Allium cristophii (also known as Star of Persia) or Allium schubertii bulbs. You will be rewarded next spring with stunning splashes of color in dramatic fashion. Neighbors taking walks through the neighborhood will be sure to ask what those interesting flowers are!

Pansies

For a pop of color, combine sub-zero pansies with spring flowering bulbs. The pansies are available in a kaleidoscope of colors and will bloom this fall. They will bloom again when the snow melts, & come spring the bulbs planted below them will grow through the pansies to flower above them. A bed of bright yellow pansies with purple tulips or blue pansies with yellow daffodils is a sight to behold in spring.

Grasses

Buy & plant ornamental grasses in September. They provide immediate interest and will establish themselves now for future enjoyment. Most grasses have inflorescence (plumes of flowers) in the fall, and the foliage will sway in the breeze, adding visual interest to your garden. Hardy and reliable as well as deer resistant, they can drastically change a landscape. Miscanthus “Morning Light” is a favorite.

Kale

Plant ornamental kale this month for incredible color through November. Although it won’t overwinter, it will flourish & bring you enjoyment through the autumn months. Your kale will tolerate some frosts & will even become more dramatic after a few cold nights. Plan on it looking vibrant all the way to Thanksgiving Day.

Mums

Colorful Mums can be planted in containers with bright stems of willow, dogwood or other branches poked through the soil as vertical interest. After the fall season, the Chrysanthemums can be planted in the ground for winter, cut back and mulched to return next spring.

Shrubs

Henry’s Garnet Itea is a fun flowering shrub with long lasting red fall color. It blooms in summer and puts on a stunning show in the autumn year after year. Or, try an Oakleaf Hydrangea with its dark red to burgundy foliage on cinnamon colored exfoliating stems. When it comes to flowering shrubs, consider opting for a panicle hydrangea in September with “Limelight.”

Even though her personal mission already included educating others about the importance of being proactive about personal health, her commitment to that mission increased ten-fold after being educated by world renown scientists about the effect these life-enhancing molecules have on the body. Not only was she committed to educating others about personal health, her mission now included educating others as to why making their personal health should be their #1 priority. She has been successfully fulfilling that mission by changing others’ lives, physically and financially, ever since.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has. -Margaret Mead Jacque advises that “being healthy costs money; it is an investment in oneself. But it costs a whole lot more money to be sick, not to mention the quality of life issues that accompany being sick. Being proactive about our health is key to a long, healthy life.”

A lifelong resident of the area, Jacque earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees at WMU and is a proud Bronco. She is a passionate volunteer, donor and sponsor with a lengthy list of community accomplishments which include boards, service clubs, arts organizations and committees, among others. She is also a huge advocate for those who are most at risk and works and gives tirelessly on behalf of children, animals, domestic violence/sexual assault survivors, the elderly and more. Jacque and her husband, Scott, recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. Together they have an amazing daughter, son-in-law and two adorable granddogs. 25

The # 1 question I get asked in the hockey business is... What do you do in the off season? The off season is busier for me than in season. It’s all about planning, selling and executing to be ready for the Home Opener on October 21 at 7pm! Now you don’t have an excuse to miss it!

10

One of my guilty pleasures is trashy reality TV. I get up early every morning to have a cup of coffee and watch a Real Housewives of something. 11 I have read over 50 books in the last 12 months both fiction and non-fiction. 12 I enjoy public speaking on any topic, personal or professional. 13 I have three children, two cats, one dog and one husband at home. They are listed in no particular order.

Increasing Your Productivity T H E

T

he advent of workplaces dominated by technology has brought a shift in the expectations—and illusions—of productivity. Despite the availability of efficient

systems to streamline tasks, many workers admit to being sidetracked during their workday. Here are a few tips for staying on track and getting the most out of the time you spend at the office.

Take Stock

Calculate how much time you’re devoting to certain parts of your workday. Is email correspondence bogging you down for several hours? Once you have a clear picture of how you are spending your hours at the office, you can develop an effective schedule during which to accomplish those time-sucking tasks while maximizing the rest of your day.

Write It Down

A to-do list floating around in your head can become overwhelming and immobilizing. The physical act of writing things down and crossing items off the list oneby-one helps you sail smoothly through tasks. There is no right way to do it, which gives you the freedom to find the method that works best for you; keep a old-fashioned planner, use the notes function on your smartphone or tap into the plethora of apps that offer different strategies to help you create a reminder list and stick to it.

34

R I G H T

W A Y

You’re Not a Robot

The human body does not do well with prolonged multitasking. One of the strategies for being more productive is to work for an hour to an hour and a half, then take a short break. With availability of technology on your laptop at home or your smartphone in your pocket comes the temptation and convenience to work long after you’ve left your desk for the day, but that doesn’t mean you should. A rich life outside of work is rewarding and motivating; know where to draw the line and leave the office at the office.

Change the Clock

When possible, explore flextime with your employer. Getting to work before your colleagues or arriving later and staying after hours can be life changing. Consider working at some point on the weekend and taking a day off during the week; this gives you the benefit of getting personal tasks done while others are at work. Whether it is fewer distractions or less rush-hour traffic, a slight change in your schedule can help you increase your focus, find your flow and reap a greater sense of accomplishment.

Nix Multitasking

Psychologists have determined that multitasking can squelch productivity. According to the American Psychological Association, our brains are not designed for heavy-duty, prolonged task juggling. It’s easy to think spinning a bunch of plates at once will yield a high return, but in reality, it’s not an effective way to

BY WLM

handle tasks. Instead, stay focused on one job at a time and only move on once it’s completed.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

The more the merrier! Have trusted people in your corner to whom you can assign important tasks. Find colleagues who excel in certain areas and tap into their strengths rather than attempting to manage a whole project on your own. With various wheels in motion, jobs can get done more efficiently.

Minimalize Meetings

Before reserving the conference room, determine the importance of the upcoming meeting. Is it beneficial for employees and the company? Will it help solve a problem or clear up confusion? If the answer is no, see if a resolution can be made via group text, email or other correspondence. If a meeting is a must, create an agenda and share it with participants ahead of time so everyone can bring their prepared thoughts and ideas to the table. Also, set a time limit by which to adjourn the meeting with a solution in place.

What would you do if you weren’t afraid?” – Sheryl Sandberg

Put Yourself Out There: Cultivating connections to build your business

W

hether you’re working your way up to corporate ladder or forging connections

for your established business, building relationships is crucial to your success. For many entrepreneurs whose businesses are thriving, successful networking is one of the most common threads.

According to more than half of the respondents in a survey by The UPS Store, making connections and building relationships are among the most beneficial aspects of networking with other small businesses. Sixty-one percent of small business owners say they want to establish in-person relationships. Attending networking and meetup events is an excellent way for entrepreneurs to form new relationships, share experiences, celebrate their hard work and connect with potential customers.

Embrace The Competition

The following tips can help small business owners make the most of networking events.

Represent Your Brand Well

Practice Your Pitch

When introducing yourself, be prepared to give a brief explanation of your business, boiled down to a couple of sentences. Be sure to include your business name, the solution you provide and anything that makes you stand out. The key is to deliver enough context that others can engage in meaningful conversation while keeping it succinct enough that you have plenty of time to listen.

Be Prepared to Participate (Or Not) Successful networking is as much about giving as it is receiving. Challenge yourself to meet three new people. Ask open-ended questions and listen to what others are saying. Actively participating not only leads to more productive conversations, but it also helps build stronger relationships. Akin to speed dating, not everyone you encounter is a suitable connection. If it feels as if the conversation is going nowhere, go ahead and move on.

It may feel counterintuitive to forge a relationship with a direct competitor, but there’s some obvious benefit to trading notes with someone who is operating in your market from a similar vantage point. Remember, while neither of you is going to give up proprietary information, a respectful dialogue may get your wheels turning to think about solving a problem in a new way.

You are every bit the face of your business in this setting as you are within your business walls. Dress the part and present yourself as you would to potential customers. Make sure you have updated business cards, as 75 percent of survey respondents said they are the most common marketing tool used to promote their business. Relax, be respectful and remain authentic.

Be Mindful of Social Media

According to CareerBuilder’s annual social media recruitment survey, 60 percent of employers use social networking sites to research job candidates. “Tools such as Facebook and Twitter enable employers to get a glimpse of who candidates are outside the confines of a resume or cover letter,” said Rosemary Haefner, chief human resources officer of CareerBuilder. “And with more and more people using social media, it’s not unusual to see the usage for recruitment to grow as well.” Bear in mind that your next potential clients or vendors may look you up on social media or business networking sites while evaluating their decision to work with you.

Retain Your Newfound Knowledge

After meeting a handful (or more) of new people, all the faces and names can run together. Jot down a reminder on the back of business cards you gather. When you get back to your desk, take some time to make notes on everyone you met. Include pertinent contact information and details of your conversation, areas where the connection may be fruitful in the future and any immediate follow-up. Tech savvy networkers can scan the business cards to a smartphone with an app such as CamCard. This app allows you to add meeting notes, integrate your data with other CRM applications, as well as exchange virtual business cards. BY WLM

The Sound of Music Studies show music may have the ability to soothe, heal and inspire physical activity. Courtesy of MCC

Plato said, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.” Music is an integral part of our lives. It communicates messages and emotions not easily expressed, beckons our hearts and soothes our spirits.

There is growing evidence that the melodies that make up the soundtrack of your life—the tunes you crank up on your morning commute, at your desk or while you make dinner—can be overwhelmingly beneficial to your overall health. A study from researchers at the Cleveland Clinic focused on the use of music for brain surgery patients who are required to be awake during their procedures. Researchers found that music helped the patients manage anxiety, reduce pain and relax more fully during their procedures.

In another study titled, “The Effect of Music Intervention in Stress Response to Cardiac Surgery in a Randomized Clinical Trial,” a team of Swedish researchers measured serum cortisol, heart rate, respiratory rate, mean arterial pressure, arterial oxygen tension, arterial oxygen saturation and subjective pain and anxiety levels for patients who had undergone

cardiothoracic surgery. Those who were allowed to listen to music during recuperation had lower cortisol levels than those who rested without music.

Many doctors now play music while operating or allow patients to pop in their ear buds and get lost in song to calm their nerves during in-office procedures. According to Caring Voice Coalition, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of patients with chronic illnesses, music has also been shown to enhance memory and stimulate both sides of the brain, which may help individuals recover from a stroke or those suffering from cognitive impairments. Music also has a positive impact on one’s mood. Neuroscientists have discovered that listening to music stimulates the production of dopamine, heightening positive emotions through the reward centers of the brain.

Some researchers think that music may help improve immune response, promoting faster recovery from illness. Undergraduate students at Wilkes University measured the levels of IgA— an important antibody for the immune system’s first line of defense against disease— from saliva. Levels were measured before and after 30 minutes of exposure to various sounds, including music. Soothing melodies produced

significantly greater increases in IgA.

All of this isn’t to mention that music therapy is now commonplace in many doctor’s offices, nursing homes and hospitals. The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), founded in 1998, cites the growing field of music therapy as “an established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship to address physical,

emotional, cognitive and social needs of individuals.”

A highly nuanced field of study, music therapists hold bachelor’s degrees or higher in music therapy and are well versed in biology, psychology, social and behavioral sciences. Sessions can either be active— in which clients participate in making music, or receptive—in which clients listen to music. Treatment outcomes for a wide array of conditions have shown to be successful, including decreased levels of depression and enhanced social and emotional skills in Alzheimer’s patients, enhanced feelings of control, confidence and empowerment in victims of trauma and improved respiration, lower blood pressure and relaxed muscle tension in pain management patients. So, turn up the stereo, dust off your vinyl records or let your iTunes play from dawn to dusk; your body, heart and mind will thank you for it.

APPS

EVERY PROFESSIONAL NEEDS

T

he dawn of the digital world brought with it a surplus of apps vying for coveted spots in our smartphones and on our desktops. From the saturation, a few apps have emerged offering solutions for age-old problems to become mainstays in our tech arsenals. With stellar user experiences and forward-thinking features that save time and add convenience to common tasks, these five apps are proving their worth with users across the board.

EVERNOTE

Cost: Free — $69.99/year You can’t get too far in a list of powerhouse apps without coming across Evernote, and for good reason: Users have described the dynamic note-taking app as “an extension of your brain.” Evernote reaches across platforms and devices, allowing users to take and catalog notes in notebooks. Notes can contain text, images, pdfs, audio and video files, and can be created by typing, voice recording, taking a picture, sending an email to your Evernote, sending a document with your phone or scanner, and dragging and dropping existing files. The search function is what makes this app an archiving all-star: Search for your notes by tags, words within notes, dates, location (the app pins your whereabouts whenever you create a note) and view related notes when you search the web. With photos, Evernote extracts words featured in the image and turns them into readable, searchable text. You even have the option of adding links to other notes or merging notes together. The web clipper is a user favorite: The browser add on allows you to save any full-page articles, images, selected text, emails and webpages that you please.

KEEPER

EXPENSIFY

Keeper is the top-rated password manager out there. Along with allowing users to store their passwords in a digital vault, it generates high-strength passwords composed of random characters to protect against hackers. Turn “keeper fill” on in your phone or browser and the password field will automatically fill. Organize your logins by categorized folders, and even access your website of choice from the app itself. The highsecurity digital vaults can also be used to store private files, videos and pictures and gives you option to share them with users of your choice.

This app promises to introduce users to “expense reports that don’t suck.” A sanity saver for those who view such things as a chore, Expensify tracks expenses, miles and time worked on a particular project. Expensify’s beyond convenient feature lets you snap a picture of a receipt, then extracts the information then codes it and reports it before you submit it for approval. Users also have the option of uploading receipts from a website or their emails. For logging travel, miles can be logged via odometer reading, typed in distance or a GPS reading. Businesses can tailor the automatic approval feature to allow the system to give the thumbs up to certain expenses and save others for review. Expensify also offers a customizable automatic reimbursement feature that dispenses money right into the bank account of employees once it is auto approved and syncs with many widely used accounting programs.

Cost: From $29.99/year

SLACK

Cost: Free — $12.50/month The tech community hails Slack as the be-all-end-all team working app that brings communication and file sharing across multiple platforms to one place. The app allows users to create channels for discussing specific topics with groups comprised of those who need to partake in the conversation. The drag and drop feature makes file sharing a breeze, allowing for streamlined collaboration. Slack integrates with nearly every popular tool (Dropbox, Gmail, MailChimp, Twitter, Wordpress, Google Drive and more) and lets you have notifications from those tools show up in Slack channels of your choice. The app also syncs across platforms, so you can start a conversation at your desktop and pick it up on your mobile device. One of the highlighted benefits praised by users is the fact that Slack keeps your inbox lean and projects moving smoothly forward.

Cost: Free — $9/month

ADDAPPT Cost: Free

Addappt is an app with a simple answer to a simple problem: keeping your contacts up-to-date. The app syncs with your native contact list to allow users to update their own information in your address book, and in turn, lets you manage your information in theirs. When you get a new phone number or start with a fresh email address, you no longer have to spend time mass emailing and texting your contacts, crossing your fingers that they take the initiative to update your info. An additional feature allows you to configure your time zone, so those working on a global level can make clear when is the best time to be contacted.

WEIGHT LIFTING The Essential Exercise Every Woman Will Benefit From COURTESY MCC

W

omen’s bodies are built differently from men’s to accommodate the changes of pregnancy and childbirth. Although women may store fat differently and have less muscle mass than men, it’s still important that women include weight resistance training in their exercise routines. Lifting weights is an important part of staying fit. Yet many women do not pick up weights out of fear of bulking up and packing on extra weight. In a 2011 opinion poll conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, less than 20 percent of women said they accomplished the CDC’s recommended 2.5 hours of aerobic exercise and two periods of strength training each week. Contrary to popular belief, women who weight train will not take on the physique of a dedicated

40

September 2017

competitive weight lifter. The Women’s Heart Foundation says that levels of estrogen make it quite difficult for women to become overly muscular. Through strength training, a women’s muscles improve in tone, endurance and strength instead of size.

Here are some additional benefits of strength training:

Resistance training provides an efficient way to build strength and burn calories. A study from researchers at the University of New Mexico found that the body takes between 15 minutes and 48 hours after exercise to return to a resting state. That means that a person continues to burn calories after exercising, a phenomenon known as “after-burn” or “excess postexercise oxygen consumption.” The more intense the workout, the longer the after-burn may last.

that can increase joint stability.

Studies performed at the Quincy, Mass., South Shore YMCA found that the average woman who strength trains two to three times a week for two months will gain nearly two pounds of muscle, but lose 3.5 pounds of fat. With that lean muscle addition, resting metabolism increases and more calories can be burned each day.

• Reduces risk of heart disease by lowering LDL cholesterol and increasing HDL cholesterol.

• Builds stronger muscles and connective tissues • Improves the way the body processes sugar, which can help reduce the risk of diabetes.

• Reduces rates of depression. A Harvard University study found that 10 weeks of strength training reduced clinical depression symptoms more successfully than standard counseling. Women who strength train commonly report feeling more confident and capable. Women with no strength training experience can consult with a personal trainer who can teach them proper strength training form. This ensures that the exercises are being done efficiently while reducing the women’s risk of injury.

How to Be Memorable Four basic elements go into every piece of great advertising: 1) A display that’s relevant to your audience, and changes how they look at things. 2) A catchy, accessible-but-short slogan, tagline, or headline. 3) Brand presence, so the audience connects to your company or product. 4) A spark of magic. Ultimately, your audience decides if your advertising is amazing, worthwhile, and memorable. They must find the spark in your advertising … so let it shine! Print provides one of the best ways to meet all four elements of a memorable advertisement. Print delivers provocative images to intrigue your intended market. Print uses text that people really think about. Print makes sure your audience identifies with your logo and name, keeping your branding connected. To become simplified sometime means to unclutter our lives or reduce our stuff, but the end result is to make life better. Sometimes we have to focus on the important parts of our life to create the illusion of simplicity toward a better life. Here are a few books that may led us to serenity & simplicity. Suggestions brought to you by Gloria Tiller of Kazoo Books

Seven Thousand Ways to Listen, Staying Close to What is Sacred by Mark Nepo Local author Mark Nepo wrote Oprah’s favorite meditation book, The Book of Awakening. This newer title reminds us that as busy as we get each day, we still need to listen. Sometimes it means listening to that voice inside us or the nature around us. Try quieting your mind to pay attention to what the heart is saying. As we listen, we search the unsaid part of ourselves. Focusing on us, for just a part of the day helps to simplify and understand our place in life.

The Little Book of Hygge

The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer Release your limitations with this unique study into your soul. The author taps into the traditions of meditation and mindfulness to lead us into becoming conscious beings. The inner voices we have and hear every day, all the time, can be conflicting. It’s hard to make up your mind when you have decisions to make and hear several answers. This allows you to uncover the source and fluctuations of your inner energy and learn to understand emotions and feelings. This is not a meditation book, but rather a process to learn to live each day.

by Meik Wiking The essence of Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) is the definitive guide to the Danish philosophy of comfort, togetherness and well-being. There is a profound reason that we cuddle up on a sofa or love a quiet dinner for two. It’s comforting. So here’s how you take a break from business each day and learn to be comfortable. You can build relationships and enjoy bits and pieces of life every day. Joy everyday.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig This is a classic title where the author weaves two plot lines. The first gives us a travelog of a transcontinental motorcycle journey with friends. In the second plot we learn about the life of Phaedrus, a solitary individual obsessed with a philosophical concept called Quality. This is a study of Metaphysical philosophy told as a storyline. Written in the 70’s, still viable today.
