WHICH SCREENING TEST IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Breast cancer screening guidelines can be confusing. Major health organizations have different recommendations for screening mammography. How do you know which to pick? Current guidelines emphasize that screening decisions should be made after a discussion between the patient and their provider. Living in the information age, with access to the internet, the days of the doctor telling the patient what to do without the patient’s input are outdated.

All the guidelines agree on the most crucial point: mammograms save lives. The recommendations also agree on the timing of mammograms. Yearly mammograms, starting at age 40, save the most lives. The guidelines differ on how to weigh the proven benefit of saving lives versus the risks of mammography. Those risks, however, are mainly false positives and overtreatment. With today’s technology, radiation is not a

Breastrisk.

cancer becomes more common as women age. Some guidelines start routine screening at age 50, leaving the decision to screen between the ages of 40-49 as an individual decision. It is essential to know that 1 in 6 women with breast cancer are diagnosed in their 40s, and 75% of these women have no family history or specific risk factors. Also, the guidelines do not consider race—breast cancer peaks for women in their 40s who are black, Hispanic, and Asian. For white women, it peaks when women are in their 60s.

Some guidelines stress the risk of anxiety associated with a false positive exam as a reason not to start at age 40 and not to screen yearly. A false positive means an abnormality was discovered on the screening mammogram that needed further testing but turned out not to be cancer. The other main risk is overtreatment, which refers to finding and treating a cancer that never would have been fatal if left untreated. At present, we cannot confidently determine which cancers can be left alone and watched versus which need treatment. Knowledge about different types of breast cancer continues to grow.

Bronson recommends that all women begin yearly mammogram screening at age 40 and continue for as long as they are in good health.

For some women, certain factors increase the risk of developing breast cancer or decrease the sensitivity of mammograms. Additional screening measures may be indicated. Women of average risk with dense tissue can benefit from supplemental screening with whole breast ultrasound. The information seen on mammograms and ultrasound is complementary. It is best to perform both screening tests on the same day so they can be interpreted together.

Women with any tissue type at high risk for breast cancer should undergo yearly breast MRI in addition to mammogram per American Cancer Society guidelines. Many high-risk women choose to schedule a screening

mammogram and breast MRI 6 months apart so as to have testing twice a year.

LYNN CHENZHANG MEET

CEO, Chief Compliance Officer, Certified Financial Planner, Certified Public Accountant, business owner, philanthropist, wife, mother, and friend. Those are just some of the many hats worn by Lynn Chen-Zhang, and trust me when I tell you, she wears each of those hats very well. Unapologetically feminine and undeniably extraordinary, Lynn Chen-Zhang is a force to be reckoned with in finance. Serving as the CEO and Chief Compliance Officer of Zhang Financial (ranked the top fee-only RIA in the state of Michigan by Financial Advisor Magazine), Mrs.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST CRUCIAL ELEMENTS IN STARTING A NEW CAREER?

A: Being flexible is one of the most crucial elements in starting a career. Steadily understanding how to adapt and perform your job rather than immediately getting satisfaction for things turning out well is essential to developing skill and character in the business Ifworld.every day is sunny, you won’t appreciate a sunny day.

If you struggle, don’t be afraid to pivot and change course. Find your strengths and utilize

Zhang leads a team of exceptional financial advisors and support staff alongside her husband, Charles Zhang (who was just named the sixth top wealth advisor in America by Forbes.) When spending time with Mrs. Zhang, it is easy to see that she means business!

Last month, the Moxie team had the pleasure of sitting with Mrs. Zhang for an afternoon of conversation and questions. We are incredibly pleased to kick off this She Means Business edition of Moxie Magazine with the wisdom and wit of Mrs. Lynn Chen-Zhang.

them. Always be curious about how you grow, evolve, and progress in your career.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN ADDING NEW EMPLOYEES TO THE ZHANG FINANCIAL TEAM?

A: Our highest priority is finding team members who are friendly, honest, kind, and service-oriented. While skills are critical, they can be trained. We pride ourselves on having a quality team who genuinely loves and wants to help Anotherpeople.quality we highly value is curiosity and determination. Self-starters with a keen eye for detail are significant to our team’s

success. These team members pride themselves on going the extra mile for clients, which is remarkably noticeable. So noticeable that Zhang Financial has several clients who have been with the firm for three decades.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?

I love seeing how our work directly helps people’s lives. When clients see the fruits of their labor, it is the most fulfilling part of the job. I always want to be able to look my clients in the eye and say, “I did the best for your interest because I have no other agenda.” It is so gratifying for me to see

SHE’S GOT{ }

the impact of our work on clients’ lives. At Zhang Financial, we live by the motto, “when you work with us, you don’t have to worry about the details; we do.”

HOW DOES ZHANG FINANCIAL ENCOURAGE ITS TEAM MEMBERS TO CONTINUE LEARNING AND GROWING?

It is imperative to help young people further their education, even after they receive their degree. Charles and I are committed to professional and personal development among our team. Charles started a book club targeting the firm’s younger staff. The club meets via Zoom for an hour each week. The club’s objective is to implement advice from other professionals into the firm’s culture and the routines of its young professionals.

Recently they discussed The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey, which is one of my favorites! Intentionally instilling good habits into a routine is so important. Once those habits become routine, they become a part of you; once they become part of you, they are always there.

I believe every employer and organization has a social responsibility to help young people grow.

WHAT IS ESSENTIAL IN KEEPING TEAM MEMBERS HAPPY AND PRODUCTIVE?

Communication is vital! Leaders need to listen, but employees need to learn to communicate. My door is always open for my team, and I work with them to resolve their problems. A workplace culture that encourages communication is essential, and there should be confidence that we operate in an environment where discussion is welcome.

It is important to remember that while the discussion is welcome, it does not mean that people always get what they want.

WHAT HAS BEEN ONE OF HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF YOUR CAREER TO THIS POINT?

Without a doubt, learning to balance life and work. Being the firm’s CEO, wife, and mom of two sons (now adults, both working in finance), it has at times been challenging to find any balance, but I have to admit, it all worked out in the end.

It can become hard to maintain when you start getting busy and are being pulled in ten different directions. I have found that making and following a to-do list helps me prioritize and stay on track.

DO YOU HAVE A LIFE PHILOSOPHY?

If you put in the work and effort, there is nothing to regret in life. I always ask myself, have I given my all? Is there anything else I could have done? Things don’t always work out, but when I give my all, I can walk away with no regrets because I know I have given 110%.

YOU AND CHARLES HAVE GIVEN OUR COMMUNITY SO MUCH OF YOUR TIME, TALENT, AND TREASURE. CAN YOU TELL US WHAT SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PHILANTHROPIC PROJECTS HAVE BEEN?

One of our first and most significant projects was the Legacy Collections Center at my alma mater, Western Michigan University. For years many of this region’s historical documents were housed in a dried-out, abandoned swimming pool. We partnered with WMU and built a state-of-the-art, safe place to house these precious documents which hold so much of the community’s history. The Legacy Collections Center is home to the WMU Archives and Regional History Collection and is the most significant archives building in southwest Michigan and was awarded the silver certification in energy and environmental design.

Another favorite was inspired by my “third son,” Sparky (the Shih-Tzu) Zhang, Chief Financial Pawfficer, and was just completed. Charles and I are passionate about helping animals and were proud to partner with The Kalamazoo County Humane Society in their new Animal Care & Resource Center. The space has quality veterinary medical rooms, an education space, and a beautiful memorial garden to honor pets who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

The third and final project I want to mention is the new Portage Community Senior Center. So many of our clients and friends enjoy spending time at the senior center; we were inspired to partner with the City of Portage in building this beautiful center to serve the current seniors and many generations to come.

WHAT SPARKED PHILANTHROPICYOURSPIRIT?

When we arrived in Kalamazoo, we were young college students without much to give. This community supported and encouraged us in those early years. An old Chinese saying is, “when you are thirsty, and someone gives you a drop, you repay them with a spring.” That is the basis of our philanthropic spirit toward this fantastic community.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PARTING ADVICE FOR OUR READERS?

Ultimately, whether at work or in the world, most people want to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Always do your best and remember that even the slightest difference can significantly impact another person. Knowing there is always an opportunity to give and positively impact the lives of others keeps me motivated and moving forward.

Serving A VERY PRACTICAL NEED FROM THE HEART

When a loved one receives a cancer diagnosis, their world gets turned upside down; their treatment and recovery become a constant focus. It’s an overwhelming, stressful, & exhausting time. Their family also experiences high anxiety levels & more responsibilities as they support their loved ones. During cancer treatment, families struggle to keep up with simple day-to-day tasks, like grocery shopping, laundry, and house cleaning. Jeannie and Terry Henderson chose to become partners with CLEANING FOR A REASON.

CLEANING FOR A REASON’S MISSION IS TO PROVIDE CLEAN HOMES FOR CANCER PATIENTS. Partnering with more than 1,200 residential cleaners throughout the United States and Canada, they offer free house cleaning to any household battling cancer. Since 2006, the nonprofit and its partners have donated more than $15.2 million in services, helping more than 45,000 cancer patients.

“We are in the cleaning business, but a clean house is not the only goal of our services. Our primary goal is to Make Lives Better in All That We Do,” said Jeannie Henderson. This couldn’t be more true than when a cancer patient receives a donated cleaning visit. Cancer treatment drains the patient of energy needed for healing. Their family is also struggling with all that needs to be done. The experience of having your home cleaned is uplifting, calming, and joyful. It’s almost like magic; the dust, cobwebs, and crumbs have disappeared. It allows the patient and family some time of rest and enjoy their home instead of having to clean.

“A cancer diagnosis comes with many emotions and challenges, which affect the entire family. I was no longer able to care for my family and home.” shared a Cleaning for a Reason recipient. “Living with cancer can be difficult, but I continue to thrive because of people like YOU!”

One fantastic thing about Cleaning for a Reason is that if a loved one lives far away, they can be nominated and paired with a partner cleaning service in their area. It is difficult to know how to help a loved one from a distance, so Cleaning for a Reason provides this much-needed service to patients and those who love them in their time of need.

Cleaning for a Reason needs your help to serve more cancer patients. To raise awareness and raise much-needed funds, Jeannie Cleaning is hosting the 4TH Annual Cleaning for Cancer Week, October 24-28. During this unique five-day event, Kalamazoo-area cancer patients will be cleaned daily. The week will culminate with the #PINKOUT for a Reason Celebration & Fundraising Event on Friday, October 28.

Everyone can help CLEANING FOR A REASON to serve more patients here in Kalamazoo and across North America.

Tell a Friend - Help us spread the word.

Nominate a Patient - Go to CleaningforaReason.org to nominate a patient anywhere in North America.

Donate - Every dollar helps us connect more cancer patients to local cleaning businesses that will donate free cleaning services.

CivilityHybrid Workplace IN THE

BE THE CIVILITY “GLUE”

During the past two years, the old work routines we took for granted have been profoundly disrupted and probably are gone forever. We’ve had to adjust to working with others in a mixture of settings: always in person, remote, or a hybrid of the two.

Even before COVID-19, we were struggling to be civil with one another. Research findings reported in Civility in America 2019: Solutions for Tomorrow that 93% of Americans identified incivility as a problem, while 68% classified it as a significant problem. So how can we collectively do better?

WHAT IS CIVILITY?

Civility is the act of showing regard for others by being polite. For example, you show civility when speaking kindly to someone who has hurt your feelings, or by holding the door for someone else. It’s about being mindful of not just yourself but everyone around you. Civility means behaving in a manner that shows care for others. When we’re not civil with one another, whether we agree or not, bad things can happen.

Incivility doesn’t depend on the setting. It looks the same in a remote, in-person, or hybrid environment. Subtle slights. Outright interruptions. Belittling comments. Common discourtesies. Even complete disregard. This can lead to lower self-esteem, higher stress, and decreased job and life satisfaction. Remote interactions can make the problem seem invisible.

BOOSTING YOUR CIVILITY SKILLS

SO HOW CAN IMAGE MANAGEMENT TOOLS SUPPORT YOUR EFFORTS TO BE CIVIL IN TODAY’S WORKPLACE ?

BE ENGAGED – Participate and show respect while attending meetings virtually. Plan ahead, even if it means getting out of bed a few minutes early to put your appearance together. Don’t multitask during meetings, whether on camera or in person. Tending to email on your phone or surfing the Internet while someone is presenting is just plain rude. Listen and respond with verbal and nonverbal communication cues to send the message that you are actively listening.

USE YOUR VOICE – Be sure to address colleagues respectfully. Don’t use profane language and maintain a professional tone. Add pauses where periods and commas would fall during written communication. Also, don’t speak over others; if appropriate, raise your hand to show that you wish to talk.

APPEAR PRESENT – Be social and work to maintain and grow work relationships and friendships: combat negativity and poor behavior with sincerity, positivity, and tact. Positive news about family, accomplishments, and achievements staves negativity and nurtures relationships. Short chats at the coffee pot might be gone, so look for other ways to accomplish the same social/bonding effects.

MAINTAIN YOUR VISUAL IMAGE –

Whether client-facing or not, your role should still support your team, your clients, and your company’s brand. Respect starts with being respectful to yourself. Define a workday appearance in dress and grooming that best represents what you want to achieve. For example, choose a comfortable sweater vs. a favorite sweatshirt. When on camera, participate from a space of minimal distraction, seated at a table/desk with the focal point on your face to your upper chest. Avoid broadcasting your ceiling, a view up your nose, or showcasing the room you’re sitting in.

To maintain civility, practice polite behavior. Be respectful of others, show empathy, and extend kindness to them. Consider your own behaviors and their impact on others and your reputation. Build your self-awareness and gauge your behaviors in the workplace, wherever that is in your current life. Even if rudeness continues to grow around you, you can be mindful of your behaviors and lead the charge to fight that trend and instill respect.

Burnout can look like any number of things: including anxiety, difficulty concentrating, pessimism, feeling stiff and achy, a general “blah” feeling, and increased difficulty managing diabetes because of its physical, mental, and emotional components. After all, what affects the body affects the mind. And vice-versa. Yet, we tend to assign more importance to our physical health than our mental/emotional health. But they are the same.

It may seem like we’re practically back to business as usual, but our bodies tell another story. Our nervous systems have become overwhelmed by stress over the last few years, and if left unaddressed, it can cause many physical, mental, or emotional issues.

First, let’s explore what causes it—longenduring stress.

Burnout has gotten much attention since the pandemic started, but chances are, stuck stress had been accumulating in our bodies for years, if not decades. And many of our nervous systems have gotten stuck with our stress response system, the sympathetic branch of our autonomic nervous system, in the “ON” position.

Under acute conditions, stress serves a protective function. It sharpens our attention and mobilizes our bodies to cope with what it perceives as a threatening situation. When it evolved, this looked like a predator hunting us or the hunger we felt while foraging or hunting for our next meal.

Stress comes and goes, allowing our bodies to return to baseline where we feel mentally positive, have vital energy, can digest and assimilate our nutrients and eliminate toxins quickly; healing, regeneration, and reproduction all function well, and we feel strong and capable.

When the stress becomes chronic and unrelenting, like in the last several years, our nervous systems become overwhelmed, and as a result, most of the functions of our bodies become compromised. To maximize your body’s efficiency in this state, your other organ systems get de-prioritized, meaning your digestion slows down, immune functioning shifts—either to under-

performing—making us more susceptible to illness or overperforming—potentially causing or exacerbating allergies, asthma, or autoimmune diseases. Growth, tissue repair, reproductive functioning, and learning new material move to the back burner. Your entire body and mind change in response to the perceived threat.

Let’s look at a few changes our bodies make in response to unrelenting stress.

When the body endures long-term stress, it renders us insulin resistant to keep enough glucose circulating in the bloodstream to fuel our brain or activate the fight-or-flight

Despiteresponse.only being 3% of our body weight, our brains consume 20% of our glucose, with no means of storing it for later. The additional glucose circulating through our blood raises our risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes, and managing diabetes becomes more Cortisol, complex.oneof the main stress hormones, can convert protein into glycogen (a cousin of glucose) to store fat as energy for later, usually around our abdomen. This happens because if we can’t find food or are afraid of

So, let’s talk about what happens to your mind & body long-enduringduringstress. you feel like you’ve hit a wall at least once since the COVID-19 pandemic? Like you don’t laugh as much as you used to? Or hold chronic tension in your body?

a predator and must hide for an extended period, we can make it through the famine. But these fat stores can easily reach the heart’s arteries and cause blockages.

Increased blood pressure and high blood glucose make the blood more viscous (sticky), resulting in an even more erratic flow of blood, further exacerbating the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Michigan alone experienced a 123% increase in cardiovascular deaths since March 2020!

Since the brain operates on a fixed fuel budget, it has evolved to shift energy resources as necessary, meaning mental processes are competitive.

It’s simply not possible to have all of our neurons firing at once. When one structure of the brain is active, it comes at the expense of another. In chronic stress, the HPA axis, the grouping of the Hypothalamus—Pituitary gland—and the Adrenal glands all require fuel to keep the system on alert. The thinking parts of the brain are robbed of energy, so our ability to focus, learn new material, recall things we know, think creatively, problem-solve and be productive members of society are all hindered. We become more vulnerable to issues like anxiety and depression.

According to Professor Grant, those currently languishing are also more likely to develop depression and anxiety in the next decade—even more so than those who now suffer from anxiety and

during stress, hormones like adrenaline bind to muscle spindles to ratchet up the resting tension of the muscles to keep us ready to respond—fight, flight, freeze—at a moment’s notice. Again, as a protective mechanism meant for a much simpler time, but now, we’re constantly bombarded by stressful stimuli, and our headaches, jaw tension, and neck and back pain are a result of the stuck stress.

mind of tension, to feel more energetic, inspired, creative and hopeful.

For example, when stressed, we tend to breathe quite shallowly, unknowingly perpetuating the stress cycle, accumulating more and more stuck stress in our bodies.

However, let’s try to breathe slowly through our nose and more deeply into our diaphragm. We can make a profound shift in how our bodies feel, how much energy we have, and how productive we are, and it can also positively influence every system of our bodies!

When she means business, SHE MEANS BUSINESS. So many great, local women lead and have started some great businesses around Kalamazoo and the surrounding areas. Many you know and love, and some are bound to leave you pleasantly surprised. Read on and meet the women who make it happen in Southwest Michigan!

Janene Pirbhai Adventure Designer

Some mornings Janene Pirbhai wakes up surprised that her childhood dream of travel to Tanzania has evolved into the Kalamazoo Safari Company. The safari adventure company was born from love of Tanzania and the desire to share with those inspired to journey there. In 2012, Janene and her husband Erfan invited friends and family to come along to Tanzania with them. Through this process, Janene discovered the challenges of creating custom safaris and met their current partner. Eighteen months later, the Pirbhai’s formed their new company. Kalamazoo Safari Company specializes in crafting customized adventures while staying committed to providing the service and attention that everyone expects, along with the security of a US-based organization.

Janene recognizes that travel to East Africa is a long, expensive, and expansive trip. Every sense ignites as you explore the Cradle of Mankind and the wildness that reigns supreme. Sunsets in Africa hold light differently; the shimmer of reds and oranges are intensified by ancient volcanic landscapes. Janene has discovered that by the time travel ends; you might just feel that this trip marks a personal dawn: the time that you woke to view the world a little bit differently.

As co-owner and Chief Adventure Designer, Janene Pirbhai has organized dozens of safaris for their clients. Additionally, since 2015 she has hosted four hikes to the Roof of Africa: Mt. Kilimanjaro. She feels that while it is important to help clients achieve their adventure goals, it is her mission to inspire travelers to explore and dream more.

profound and heartfelt ideal: Make lives better in all that we do.

nothing better than seeing the smiles of a happy team and clients.

Our Philosophy at West Michigan Plastic Surgery

Our mission is to provide you a comprehensive plastic surgery experience in which your total health and well-being are at the core of your treatment. We want to build lasting relationships with our patients, not only to provide the result you desire but to become partners with you in your overall health for life.

Our Passion for Beauty

We believe beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. While there is no one perfect formula for what makes a person beautiful – natural, healthy, confident are always part of the equation. Dr. Holley and the entire team at West Michigan Plastic Surgery are committed to helping our

patients become the best versions of themselves. We accomplish this by focusing on each patient, one encounter at a time.

We Don’t Sell Services. We Provide Choices. Our patients are educated and well-informed participants in their own care, who appreciate quality and honesty. We will work together to understand your concerns and identify a treatment plan that will best achieve the result you desire. We don’t sell services, we provide choices – choices that are based on sound, scientific principles.

Results That Whisper, Not Shout West Michigan Plastic Surgery is passionate about bringing out the beauty of you. Most patients in our practice are seeking subtle and natural improvement to their appearance, and that is what we provide. While always at

the forefront of technology, we carefully consider the “latest and greatest” procedures often touted by the media before undergoing thorough evaluation for scientific validity and safety. At West Michigan Plastic Surgery, we believe in a thoughtful, measured approach to refining and reshaping the breast, body, and face.

There is No Substitute for Experience

For over two decades, the staff at West Michigan Plastic Surgery have earned a reputation for excellence in aesthetic care. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to partner with our patients in achieving their beauty goals, and we take this responsibility seriously. If you choose West Michigan Plastic Surgery, you can rest assured that you have chosen practice and surgeon that uphold the highest standards of education, training, and patient care.

Her goal is to ensure that clients feel good when they look in the mirror and educate them about safe and effective products that provide excellent results. She is a Certified Laser Esthetician, and one of her favorite laser treatments for optimal results with little downtime is the Halo. For skin laxity, skin tightening/remodeling, and collagen stimulation, she recommends the state-of-the-art Radio Frequency Micro-needling with the Morpheus8. Stephanie’s best beauty advice is to wear sunscreen! Two of her favorite skincare products include SkinMedica’s TNS+ Advanced Serum and SkinBetter’s Alto Advanced Defense Serum. Stephanie’s knowledge of treatments and skincare products helps clients address concerns such as aging, melasma, sun damage, and acne scarring.

We are excited to announce the addition of our newest team member, Tiffany Cobb, Certified Medical Esthetician at West Michigan Plastic Surgery. Tiffany’s passion for beauty wellness, skin health, and educating clients on products & treatments is contagious! She uses Visia Skincare Analysis technology to determine skin health while teaching clients about their skin at a much deeper level, literally! Favorite treatments include BBL Forever Young and the duo “Hydra-needling,” which incorporates HydraFacial with the Skinpen micro-needling. When Jaime isn’t in the office serving her clients, you can find her supporting her kids at their many activities. Ean P. Hamilton Attorney & Partner

Life is full of big decisions and never-ending changes. As anyone can attest, these things can all be challenging to navigate. As a practicing attorney for over 12 years, Ean P. Hamilton works with her team at Hamilton Law to help their clients with these decisions. Centering their focus on estate planning, probate, business, civil litigation, and real estate, Ean and her team take pride in offering flexibility to their clients while making them feel at ease when they walk through the front door. One key factor in customer satisfaction is displaying their rates on their website. This offers their clients transparency and builds trust. It’s the same treatment the staff at Hamilton Law would want for themselves.

Recently awarded “Ones to Watch” by Best Lawyers for Estates and Trusts, Ean believes that nothing beats a failure but a try. Her determination is evident not only in her accomplishments as an attorney but also in her community involvement. She serves as President of the Charles J. Pratt Bar Association, Vice Chair of Friendship Village, Board Member of Inner City Youth for Change, and Vice Chair of Boys & Girls Clubs of Kalamazoo. Ean, a resident of Portage, MI, is also running for Portage Public School Board to represent the best interests of all students in the Portage community.

Ean isn’t all business all the time – when no one is watching, she loves to sing and dance, and her family and friends get to see her at her silliest. Her husband, Philip, is also her partner at Hamilton Law. Date nights are essential to Ean and Philip, and they try to fit them in as often as possible. Together, they have two sons: Parker, 8; and Austin, 5. Raising them to be decent humans is a significant focus. We also can’t forget about the 12-year-old family poodle named Charlie.

One interesting fact: Ean loves interior decorating. Hamilton Law just moved into their new office space, and the interior is Ean’s handiwork! So, the next time you’re in the area, pop in and tell her how amazing it looks.

The definition of a home is “the place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or household.” To Lu Ann, turning houses into homes has been her passion and career for the past 43 years, 12 of which have been spent with Re/Max. When it comes to being a Real Estate Broker, listing houses is something she loves, but working with buyers can be just as rewarding. One thing that Lu Ann prides herself on is that she is a one-woman show: If you call her, you’ll get her. Best of all? Everyone is a friend. Originally from Muskego, Wisconsin, Lu Ann is big on family and its love. She and her husband of 46 years, Harold, live in Lawton, Michigan, and together have been blessed with three children and seven grandchildren. Ethel Wilkey-Downs Realtor

Ethel Wilkey-Downs established her real estate business in 2013, working as a full-time realtor with Berkshire Hathaway. While Ethel excels in supporting both sellers and buyers achieving their real estate goals, her niche is first-time home buyers. Over the past seven years, Ethel has guided more than 130 of her first time home buyer clients through the process of becoming homeowners! This is an accomplishment she cherishes. Although Ethel thoroughly enjoys helping these clients, her expertise has served a wide array of clients from those searching for half-million-dollar lake homes to new real estate investors with budgets as low as $25,000.

Ethel has a firm foundation in business management. Watching her mom build and run a successful business for over 25 years made a powerful impression on Ethel, particularly about the importance of good business values and the true meaning of quality customer service. Ethel earned her first degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management and began a career with Bill Knapp’s restaurant chain. This career led to a chance meeting with a property management firm, and in 1991, Ethel joined that firm and began her real estate career.

After years of working in the real estate industry, Ethel enrolled in the Elementary Education program at Western Michigan University, earning her degree in 2003. She spent years as a classroom teacher before her love of the real estate industry, and her entrepreneurial spirit called her back into the business world, this time as the owner of her own real estate business.

Ethel’s clients value her dedication to customer service, her strong negotiating skills, and excellent communication. Serving on Berkshire Hathaway’s Beyond the Sale Committee allows Ethel to focus on giving back to local residents and the community. She is also a member of the Greater Kalamazoo Association of Realtors, where she has served on their Community Relations Committee and co-chaired the Veteran’s Day Community Event. One of her proudest professional accomplishments is being names to the GKAR Board of REALTORS Top 100 Agents five times in the past seven years.

Ethel loves being a wife, mom, and grandma. Cooking is her passion, and she loves to create new recipes and experiment with new dishes. Nothing makes Ethel happier than being in the kitchen cooking with her children. Ethel would one day love to open her own food truck.

Publications are like puzzles: there are several loose pieces that, when fit together in the correct places, craft a complete, larger picture. Several elements –from designing each page to securing ad space, coordinating our events to editing every article – have their place, and it is crucial that everything is as it should be, or the bigger picture falls apart. Our goal is to provide the most transparent, concise final image for our readership, leaving nothing short of fresh, fun, and fabulous.

You are viewing our completed image, which was put together by a team effort. Not just any team; a team that is creative, determined, and ambitious. A team that is – you guessed it – full of moxie. Keep reading below to learn more about us!

Graphic design ties together two things Alicia is passionate about: art & problem-solving. She enjoys the challenge of pulling together pieces of information and transforming them into something that is enjoyable to look at and easy to digest. As the Creative Director for Moxie, Alicia gets to do something she loves while supporting the wonderful community of southwest Michigan. Alicia was raised in Muskegon, MI and earned her BFA at Central Michigan University. After her career took her to New Jersey, then Florida, her love for her home state roots brought her back to Michigan. Besides her work on Moxie Magazine, she also works as a Graphic Designer for FireKeepers Casino Hotel. When she finds a moment between projects, she loves walking her dogs, Tenny and Lefty; dancing in the kitchen; photographing events; listening to books; and spending time with her husband and their families.

As a Creative, Jessica often has so many ideas flowing through her head that it can be difficult for others to keep up. She has been operating her music website, fusionofsound.com, since 2016. Beginning as a writer, she later moved up to editor and was given full ownership in 2020. Jessica conducts artist interviews, album reviews, concert/tour reviews, and press releases and writes features on various topics. Working with labels such as RCA Records, Sony Nashville, and Atom Splitter PR, to name a few, has been surreal. She is also our Editor-in-Chief here at Moxie Magazine!

Jessica has been married to Kyle for 13 years. Although they are a house divided (she is a University of Michigan alumni, he’s a Notre Dame fan), they survive. They have three boys – Carter (13), Nicholai (9), and KJ (6).

CALL DAUGHTERYOURHOME

Having lived through four years of college life under the blistering sun and continual frizzy-haired humidity of South Carolina, I could identify with the Branchville, SC setting of Deb Spera’s inaugural novel. In the first weeks of getting acclimated to a new southern culture, a new grueling schedule, and new uncertain attempts at friendship, my most vivid memories are of the loneliness and homesickness I felt. Had I dared mention those feelings to my far away mom on my weekly calls, my guess is that she would have “called her daughter home,” but…she never knew. Several decades later, when my husband and I were burned out from ministry in another state, my mother did have the chance to “call us home.” She lovingly cared for our family as we tried to sort out our lives. Her delight in having us close was evident.

In various ways, the three fierce protagonists in this compelling story are on a long, arduous journey, coming to grips with their broken relationships with their daughters. Each of these women takes turns speaking their thoughts in the unfolding chapters, giving us a clear picture of how the Boll Weevil Infestation of 1915 led to this situation of poverty and hopelessness in 1924, just before the Great Depression. Business owner Annie is the matriarch of the influential Coles family, and she is clueless as to why her daughters left home and refuse to communicate with her. Retta is a first-generation free slave who untiringly manages Annie’s large home

while grieving for her long-dead daughter, Esther. Downtrodden Gertrude has lived in unspeakable squalor with her abusive husband and four daughters, who seldom see love and tenderness from this hardened mama. The lives of these resilient women intersect, and though their characters and experiences are vastly different, they discover that their commonalities as “sisters” transcend understanding; they positively influence one another.

Retta’s humanity and compassion deeply touched my heart as she gathers hurting people under her wing, nurses Gertrude’s daughter back from near-death, and unselfishly serves as midwife to all who need her. She refuses to dismiss the people that God brings into her sphere, even though her friends and neighbors are disdainful. In a particularly poignant scene where I finally understood the significance of the book title, Retta is valiantly assisting a young Indian friend, Nelly, in delivering her first baby. “Mama used to say to all the womenfolk, ‘Call out to your child, what is his name?’ And the women would call his name.” With this complicated breech birth delivery, Retta commands Nelly, “Call out to your daughter. Call her home.” The tenderness of this exchange struck me as I realized the depth of the ties between daughters and mothers from the very first moment we set eyes upon them.

Most moms have experienced that strong tie at various times in their lives. In her

third year of college, my daughter struggled with bulimia. It was a horrific year with a controlling boyfriend, an unsuccessful soccer experience, and the unremitting deadlines of coursework. As summer was approaching, she accepted a nanny position; but in lengthy phone conversations, she admitted that it was a less than ideal situation with a rather demanding boss-mother. The mother heart in me knew that this beautiful daughter of mine needed the healing touch of home. So, I “called my daughter home” to love her, affirm her, laugh with her, offer rest, offer acceptance, and banish anxiety. It was a summer of restoration and refreshment for her. It was a summer of relief and hope for me.

As moms, just like Annie, Retta, and Gertrude, our greatest desire is to have good relationships with our daughters and sons. That sometimes means allowing them to figure things out on their own; at other times, it means “Calling them Home.” A mesmerizing and redemptive read.

Walking into SCHULTZ’S TREAT STREET brought me back to my first-ever job in an ice cream shop. The smell of waffle cones and sweet ice cream flavors filled me with nostalgia and made my mouth instantly water. Back at that first job, I would often sneak spoonsful of cotton candy ice cream when there was a break in customers.

I was so excited when examining the many flavors of MOOVILLE ICE CREAM on display at Treat Street to find they have my old favorite, Cotton Candy!

Even though I was instantly sold on Cotton Candy, I did second guess myself several times when I looked to see what else they offered. I was grateful for the line that was formed, so I had a little more time to ponder my Theychoice.offered

a great mix of classics like Butter Pecan, Cookies and Cream, and Chocolate. They also had some unique flavors that would be hard to find anywhere else. My husband was instantly drawn to Cookie Monster. It was Blue Moon ice cream with chunks of Oreo and Cookie Dough, basically a combination of his favorite things. He ordered his in a chocolate waffle bowvl, while I opted for mine in a classic waffle cone.

As we waited for the cheerful employees to scoop our ice cream, I wandered around the shop to see what else they offered.

There were so many displays of HOMEMADE CANDIES to look at! I found a mountain of flavors of fudge. Again, with so many flavors, from classic Peanut Butter and Chocolate to some unique flavors that tempted me, like Peanut Butter and Jelly, Cappuccino, and Strawberry Shortcake.

I also spotted some giant delicious-looking Turtle Candies and a whole display case full of gummy candies, many of them dipped in chocolate.

As I rounded the corner, I found yet displayanother case filled with honestly, desserts, yummyotherbut

my focus was on the CARAMEL APPLES. The weather is starting to cool down a little, and nothing says fall like a caramel apple, so I made sure to add one to my order.

First, let me say that my Cotton Candy ice cream was terrific and just as I remembered. It was sweet but not so sweet that it left me with

a tummy ache. I ordered a small, which came with two scoops and was the perfect amount.

My husband devoured his Cookie Monster Ice cream, leaving him with blue lips and tongue. I had a bite and had to admit it was delicious. I hadn’t had Blue Moon in forever! His chocolate waffle bowl was so good too. I could easily eat one of those on its own.

I saved my caramel apple for the next day because I was already on enough of a sugar high. It ended up being a great treat!

The apple was fresh and tart, which nicely balanced the sweet caramel. The caramel was maybe the best I have had! It was soft but not gooey. It was sweet but not sickeningly so. I recommend picking one of these bad boys up if you stop in.

I had a great experience at Schultz’s Treat Street. It is clean and cheerful; they have lovely employees and a fun nostalgic atmosphere with so much to offer! In addition to many sweet treats and ice cream, they also have some fantastic-looking hot dogs (my guilty pleasure) and sandwiches. I must get back soon, try lunch with them, and try another one of their delicious treats!

OutHealingLoud

Today my conversation is with Sandi Brown, who has a Christian radio ministry reaching 500,000+ listeners a week. In her book, Healing Out Loud: How to Embrace God’s Love When You Don’t Like Yourself, she shares some insight from her one-year journey through counseling told from both sides of the couch. Walk with Sandi and her former counselor through her therapy journey, answering the question, “What do I do when I know God loves me, but I don’t like myself?”

Kim Carson: Thank you so much for talking with me today.

Sandi Brown: Hi Kim. Thank you.

Kim Carson: Sandi, you had me with the first three pages. The bridal shower, who can’t relate to what you’re talking about? Let’s start there.

Sandi: Yes. I couldn’t figure out why I never really felt good about myself, right? I could go to a bridal shower amongst friends and family and feel like the odd one out. These women are all - they have it all together, and their life is shiny and perfect, and I’d cry all the way home, and it was deeper than that too. There are good things in my life. I have a great marriage great family. I know they love me.

KC: You have a great job!

Sandi: Yes. It really measures of everything I have dreamt of in life, and there’s a lot of good there, but yet when I put my head on the pillow, it just feels like I’m a failure, like no one likes me, like I’m not good at relationships, I’m not

good at being a mom, a wife, a woman. It got to the point that it was so disruptive. I reached out to a counselor, and then I found out I’m not the only woman who feels this way, so when you said you could relate, that’s what we’re hearing from people literally right off the bat.

KC: Yes, and sometimes it’s harder for Christians to ask for outside help.

Sandi: Yes. It’s harder, I think, to admit we need help because we know God loves us. We know that that’s a game-changer in our lives, and so then, on top of feeling bad, I feel like a really horrible Christian because why - this isn’t God’s best for my life. This is not how He would talk to me, so why do I talk to myself this way? I was 52 when I went into counseling, and I had never heard anybody, especially a believer, say, “I love God, and I don’t like myself, and I didn’t even know if it was okay to say that.” That’s what this book is about.

Let’s be honest and say God does love us enough to help us unpack and figure out why we might be feeling this way. Hey, if we’re feeling it, it’s the truth, and He honors the truth. He honored people in scripture just calling out to Him, “Where are you?”

He can do anything He wants to do in an instant, but He sometimes takes time, and what if His healing plan for us is one that takes time? Creation took time. Raising Jesus from the dead, He did it over time. So, let’s give some grace to ourselves to go, “Maybe He plans that I see a counselor, that I navigate through and unpack some things.” He’s no less God; it’s no less healing, right?

KC: Right! And you wrote this book with your former counselor; it’s a unique perspective for the reader.

Sandi: Yes, you get her unpacking not only what we did in a counseling session; it’s like you get a healing journey from both sides of the couch, and you get a healing map that is yours. You get the invitation to start from where you are and journey on. So, it was an incredible experience for me to find healing in this way, but the purpose of the book is really for the reader, “Hey, reach out to the Healer. There might be the healing map; there might be some markers that you discover as you go along. There is a way to better.”

Authors Sandi Brown & Michelle Caulk, PHD, LPC Kim Carson’s interview with Sandi Brown, author of
38 moxiemediagroup.comSeptember/October 2022

KC: Sometimes, you don’t feel like you’re making any progress in life. That’s why the healing map is so helpful; it’s step by step. You tell your story from a journal you kept, then your counselor jumps in with questions for the reader, and there are biblical scriptures. It’s just really wonderfully written. I love your dedication. “To all those who are on the courageous path toward healing and wholeness, God sees you, and He walks behind, beside, and ahead of you.” It’s hard when you’re in those places. You touch on how shame impacts a person. Shame we may not even know is there.

Sandi: Very early on, Michelle Caulk, my former counselor, said, “You’re wrestling with shame.” I immediately had a reaction. I shook my head, and I said, “Look, I’ve known my issues longer than you have. You just met me. I don’t deal with shame.” She said, “Okay, well do you relate to any of these things?” She just [unpacked] it, and I started to cry, and she said, “Why are you crying?” I said, “I don’t want to admit that I deal with shame, but that’s a mirror to my life.” This feeling like no one likes me, I don’t like myself, tried to really cover up with good things and with humor and all kinds of things and so yes. It’s amazing what you can see when someone turns the light on, right?

KC: So many things that affect us are buried in our unconscious, things that have happened that get stuffed down.

Sandi: Things that are either said to us or that we say to ourselves, our difficult situations we go through that stick. As you said, I work hard. I love being present and working on projects in the future, and I was just unaware of how many sticky things there were that had really taken root in my mind and heart. What I heard was, “You’re not good enough.” I believed it, and I took that same message from some painful situations like when my dad left or some abuse there. And if you would’ve asked me had I done that, “No, I’ve put that all in my past. I’ve moved on from that,” you try to cover it up with good things, but it doesn’t work, and that’s a good thing because God comes to set us

free, not to just put good things on top of bad things, right? In hindsight, while counseling was painful in the moment, it sets you up for a true recovery down the road, and I would say that’s what counseling did for me.

KC: Don’t you think that sometimes God just sets us up to walk this walk of faith. I mean, when times are good, you just enjoy them. Life is great. You’re not really growing and learning. It’s a season you’re in.

Sandi: Yes. There are so many scriptures full of people like that, too, right? Their closest encounters with God were right after a realtime of hardship and difficulty. So I think we like the idea of falling in love with a God on a mountaintop. Still, I’m telling you what, when you discover Him in the valley or when your heart is breaking, that’s why I think the scripture that says “He’s close to the brokenhearted” that’s when the Healer comes close when we acknowledge we need a healer, that’s when he comes close.”

KC: Yes, I felt that when I went through colon cancer. My parents thought I had a breakdown because I was so calm. At that point, you realize this is completely out of my control. I never felt closer to God. It’s so hard to explain, but it was like I was floating along; life was great, everything was beautiful, and I saw miracles happening everywhere. People say, “Yes, but you wouldn’t want to go through that again, would you.” I would not want to go through it again, but I would never want to remove it from my life either because it was a real growth period.

Sandi: There’s nothing more powerful to speak to the evidence of who He is and His goodness than to see someone suffering acknowledge His goodness in their life. That’s just powerful.

KC: Your book is built from your daily journal. I think everybody should journal. Journal your thoughts, feelings; write them down, words that people say. Once you’ve unloaded them, they’re out of you. Reading your story Sandi, you were a strong little kid to make it out of that and do what you’ve done with your life. Talk about the exercise you did in Chapter 5: The Memory Bag.

Sandi: We did some very clinical things in our counseling exercises. If my memories are in a bag and there are all kinds of emotions attached to them, I’m going to walk over on a bridge, and I’m going to take some things out of that bag. I’m just going to throw

them away. All the untruths about me being unwanted not true. Dad left, true. Unwanted, not true. Just the power to go through it and go, “Wow.” I get to decide what I put back into my bag was so freeing. I took out some untruths that I had been saying to myself, and I put some things in like compassion and grace. God doesn’t just call us to be compassionate to other people. Why wouldn’t He want us to be compassionate to ourselves, too, right?

KC: So how does it feel to know that all your stuff is out there, you’re free?

Sandi: It’s been a journey. Michelle and I were just talking about this a couple of days ago. For me to think back into her office when I’m like, “You want me to tell somebody now? Oh, my gosh.” To now, writing a book and having it all be out there is evidence of the work God’s done in freeing me up. I’m not attached. I’m not bound by anything anymore, and it’s just so freeing. I hope that’s the invitation, right? For others who may feel like, “There’s no way I could ever say anything to somebody.” Well, why not? Maybe it’s not day one, but what if it’s day 365 or something? Let’s start on a journey that just sets us free. There’s no way I wanted anything in my past to continue to control my today or my tomorrow. No way. I just didn’t know how to get there. So, that’s what counseling and that’s what hopefully this book is to show us the healing map, show us a path to where we can truly make peace with our past and not let it control us today or tomorrow.

KC: Healing Out Loud is available at your local bookstore and, of course, online. Do you have a website?

Sandi: Our website is HealingOutLoud.com. Seriously, I want to know your reaction and, more than that, how God uses this book in your life. So, if it moves the needle, please, please tell me. Otherwise, I [got naked] in the street for nothing, man. [Laughter]

KC: I think you’re going to hear lots of positive stories from your readers. Thanks so much for your time Sandi.

Sandi: Kim, it was awesome. Thank you, and I’m so glad you liked the book.
