K health.

arachi born Dr. Rubeena Zakir graduated in medicine from Sind Medical College Karachi and doctorate from Bielefeld University Germany in public

She has completed the mile stone of establishing Department of Public Health Sciences from the very scratch in Punjab University with the concept to groom health care professionals in preventive medicine. “I started here the department of public health where we offer MPhil and PhD to health care professionals inspired by the Agha khan institution where public health program is offered to only doctors. But my concept was little bit different based on Europe where, all health care professionals including phycologists, nurses, pharmacists, social scientists, applied health scientists work together to prevent diseases”. Q: Ma’am tell our readers about your academic achievements and experiences? “Immediately, after doing my MBBS, I got associated with Contech international Research Organization and worked for child and maternal health along with my house job in gynae. On completing my house job, I got married to Dr. Zakaria Zakir and moved to Lahore. Without wasting a day, i pursed my dream of specialization in gynae and on its completion I worked in sheikh Zaid Hospital Lahore in gynae department. On my husband’s posting in America, I got the opportunity to join the Stony Brook Hospital. My experience here made me realize to work in preventive medicine rather than curative medicine. On returning to Pakistan, I took admission in masters in ‘Population and Sciences’ and on its completion I along my family moved to Germany. I joined Belfield University Germany, School of Public Health and completed my doctorate degree which is also related to preventive medicine. So far, I have published more than 50 articles in impact factor journals. On completion of my doctorate degree we returned to Pakistan in 2012 after six years”. Q: How many research articles you have published and how many researches

6

WOMEN TIMES

you have conducted? “I am the social scientist with the highest number of publications in international impact factor journals especially those journals which are enlisted in high rank JCRS. I submitted my first journal in 2017, it was rejected by the editor. But I didn’t lose heart and improved my writing skills and after one to two revisions it got published. Then the process continued and up till now more than 50 papers have been published in different international journals”. Q: As an educationist how do you see education system of Pakistan? “I see a lot of potential in our young generation but their capacities are not groomed in right direction”. She further elaborated, “Actually, our education system has many flaws, the main problem is the inequality in public and private education sector of Pakistan. There are many systems working in the country which result in conflict and social division”. Q: Since you are a health care professional, do you feel any need to improve our health care system? “A minimum amount of our GDP is being spent to improve our health care system because its larger proportion is used to counter terrorism and security purposes because of political situation, so the pace to improve health care system is really very slow”. Q: Being an empowered and successful woman of the society what you wanted to do for girl’s education? I and my husband have already done a great deal of work in this regard. We are great supporters of girls’ education. In this regard we have initiated many endowment funds with the sole focus on the factor that no female student leaves their education due to financial constraints” and “we will keep doing it to our capacity”. Q: How do you manage work pressure and home commitments? It was really hectic at times when I was in Germany but my husband have always been very cooperative at all times, in all kinds of pressures and in all the decisions of my life. He stood by my side and when I decided to switch my profession from curative to preventive. I would say a woman’s success has a lot to do with the man she has in her life. Q: Any words of wisdom to pass on to other women? “Never lose your heart even in the toughest of situations, see every opportunity as golden, keep your eyes on the prize and not on the obstacles, stay strong and keep moving on”

She was called to the Lahore High Court in 1980 and to the Supreme Court in 1982. She later went on to become the first woman to serve as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association. Jahangir, a fierce defender of democracy who also regularly raised concerns about Pakistan’s military and intelligence services, was included in Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential women. She struggled to defend minority Christians charged with blasphemy, an offence that under Pakistan’s controversial law carries the death penalty. She was repeatedly threatened by the country’s militant religious right whom she criticised loudly and often.

She was also placed under home detention in 2007 for her part in a lawyers’ protest movement that helped lead to the military leader Pervez Musharraf stepping down from power. A champion of human rights, Jahangir was unafraid to speak loudly against those attacking minority religions and women. Briefly, she won scores of international awards. She was the most renowned and the most controversial and disputed personality at times. She worked for minorities rights, women rights and women empowerment earning wrath of extremist groups of patriarch society like Pakistan. However, my visit to the Hunza Valley in Pakistan and Canberra in Australia are the most memorable ones due to the beautiful scenic sights of both cities. How much time do you spend on social media? Well, social media occupies my time however, I hardly open Facebook or Instagram during official timings. For wider social networking, I like

to use social media. How do you see the future of politics in Pakistan? Politics is a tricky domain however, I think, democracy will prevail which augurs well for our country and our institutions. Which will be strengthened in years to come. How do you see, people must stick to their own or adopt foreign culture? people must stick to their own culture as its really important to maintain our distinct identity which distinguishes us from the rest. At the same time there is no harm in being modern and up-to-date as globally one must embrace diversity and help make an inclusive society. What are the efforts Information and Culture Department pursuing to promote their own culture? The Information & Culture Department has formulated a culture policy which is based on the principle of preservation and promotion of our culture through various strategies, into multiple fields of life. It is important to understand; child abuse is not just physical abuse it’s a spiritual abuse too. When this happens, one cannot live a normal life like others. Spiritual abuse in a sense that self-confidence and believe in yourself are individual contributors to become a potential citizen, an appropriate human being and enabled enough to face challenges of life. When this (child molesting) happens, one has been robbed of the power of self-confidence and self-assurance followed by certain insecurities and one become unbaled for any productive contribution in life. Zainab is just one victim of cruel act that has been raped and killed while thousands have been preyed of child abuse and left alive, making their life miserable and even worst. Sex education is controversial thing these days after the child abuse cases have surfaced consecutively and become the talk of the town. There are two schools of thought regarding educating the children sex lesson. Conservatives are arguing about its harmful contagious effects while the liberals being asserting their views on them. Instead of getting on a point provocative to solution a war of arguments and counter arguments have been started. We as whole nation need to unite on a point that is acceptable to all school of thoughts and recourse to implementation at the same time.

It’s better to educate but its necessary to maintain a certain decorum over the subject! All these commandments highlighted in Quran and Sunnah are indicative of the fact that a young Muslim (male and female both) should be made aware about the educative aspects of sexuality so that they may be able to spend a pious life in this world, thus making them eligible for the Blessings of Allah Almighty in the hereafter. They are often brought up in a state of ignorance in regard to sex issues. As a result, they may not be comfortable with their own sexuality or its expression. They leave Islamic education to Islamic Sunday schools and sex education to American public schools

Quran is a complete code of life and the author of the book didn’t shy educating mankind about sexual life. Then why should we shy teaching our generations about sex education. There is an important point to understand that conservatives point of view is influenced by the culture of the society and not by Islam. There is a thin line between educating porn and sex education, it should be well defined by clearly identifying the boundaries between them. It’s the day of great importance globally to assert our social and legal rights. Women rights activists are doing great deal of job. women's rights are protected by the Constitution in accordance with Quran and other legislative measures but there is need of their execution by the government. Child marriage legislation in Punjab must take Sindh’s progressive child marriage legislation as a precedent as it determines the marriageable age for girls at 16 and 18 for boys, which leads to increase child and mother mortality rate.

You women, of course, are all winners! no matter in what capacity you contribute to the society, whether you are an entrepreneur or someone that looks after her home, you all are doing a wonderful job. A salute with all due respect is something all you women have well earned! March the 8th is celebrated as International Women's Day (IWD), to recognize the achievements of women! regardless to any divisions whether they are ethnic, national, linguistic or political. The day also highlights the disadvantages and impediments faced by women which hinder their progress. Though women have come a long way in claiming their rights and their efforts have been fruitful and appreciated, there still is a long road ahead especially in developing countries. Their role as bread winners is undermined and even challenged in many societies. Unfortunately, the dilemma of not getting equal or fair chances as compared to men still persists. According to the World Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2017 the gender parity is over 200 years away. Gender parity will not happen overnight but women across the world are making positive gains day by day, persistently and tirelessly. Promising word is that women’s rights have dominated the news in 2017, with a global reckoning on sexual misconduct. The theme for International Women’s Day (IWD) 2018 is #pressforprogress. Aim of the theme is to inspire people to be a part of the vocal fight against inequalities regarding women, just as they did in #Metoo and #Timesup movements. Time Magazine has acknowledged the women speaking against sexual and gender injustice as their ‘Persons of the Year’, naming winners ‘The Silence Breakers’. These movements and events have encouraged the women all over the globe to not to stay silent to any injustice they face. Staying silent in most cases is counterproductive and sometimes even becomes dangerous, so let your voices be heard as the first step of solving a problem is by addressing it. It is because of the brave women in the past who voiced their concerns that women today have made such grounds and stand at a better pitch than yesterday. Had they not demanded better pays, shorter working hours and voting rights about a hundred years ago, women today still might have been deprived of these basic human rights. Women like Clara Zektin of Germany who floated the idea of International Women's Day in 1910, making it possible for different women rights groups and activists to voice their triumphs and handicaps together and on the same day, and the 100 women from 17 different countries who joined in, and every

No day can definitely be called complete; unless women have played their vital roles in it. woman who came forward in any capacity for her and others' rights, deserves to be praised. We are thankful to all these women who have struggled for women rights all along and continue to do so for present and future generations. Every woman, every individual is important in this campaign for our rights. Even a few words said in an everyday conversation for the rightful cause to participating in rallies and conference; from creating awareness to pledging for parity or even hosting an event, every contribution is worthy in every way. We all have to stand shoulder to shoulder on this and everyone is of great significance! Women have always been equal and in many cases a more important part of this world all along. No one may dare deny the fact but along the lines somewhere our rights have been compromised. We will get what is ours, it may take a little while but we will. And in the meantime, stay beautiful stay dignified and stay determined. You rock and the world rocks because of You! WOMEN TIMES

ou have heard a lot of time about Vitamins and minerals that they are essential components for our body’s proper health and growth. But have you ever imagined why vitamins and minerals are so much necessary for our body’s proper building? Especially, when it comes to vitamin c and calcium intake, we are mostly recommended by our doctors and nutritionists to take diet enriched with vitamin c and calcium like fresh salads, fruits and vegetables. Adding a glass of milk and egg in your daily diet is another important task we are advised even by our elders or parents. Here is gratification for all your curiosity behind such strict instructions to take such diet! Vitamin c is basically, a vitamin that is necessary for the growth of our tissues and calcium is a mineral that is other way important for dense bones and teeth. The very reality lies behind the recommendations for their intake is that they are out of capacity of human body to made them. In other words, human body is unable to produce or generate this two-basic vitamin and mineral. Over which our body’s elementary functions work properly. At the same time, it is essential to meet the recommended daily allowance for both from the variety of food to properly functionalize your body. Our body is unable to synthesize them and on the other hand if we do not take them in our daily diet, our body become

Additionally, this vitamin helps to maintain the cartilage in your bones and teeth, two areas that require calcium for growth, strength and development. Vitamin C is also needed for healing wounds and protecting your cells from environmental damage. Calcium, meanwhile,

contributes to blood clotting, muscle movement and the transmission of signals between your nerves. Getting enough of each of these nutrients is imperative for the proper functioning and health of your body”. There are many foods in the creation of God enriched with calcium and vitamin c that you can opt in your diet. Including Citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruit, limes and lemons, Berries such as blackcurrants, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and cranberries, Cantaloupe melon and watermelon, Kiwi fruit, Vegetables such as spinach, green and red peppers, tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage,

Raw Milk, Kale (cooked), Sardines (with bones), Yogurt or Kefir, Broccoli, Watercress, Cheese, Bok Choy, Okra, Almonds and in general, calcium food sources are found in the highest amounts in raw dairy and green vegetables. Heat the oven to 150ºC (gas mark 2). Place a tea towel on the bottom of a baking dish large enough to hold six 150ml ramekins. Beat the eggs, egg yolks and sugar until thick, then stir in the vanilla, milk, cream and Grand Marnier.

Heat the oven to 200˚C (gas mark 6). Place the lemon zest, paprika, chilli and oregano with a good pinch of sea salt in a dish and mix together. Press the steak into the mixture and rub into both sides until completely covered.

llahyar & The Legend of Markhor is the third Animated movie from Pakistan, this time by Uzair Zaheer Khan. It takes the viewer in the valleys of north Pakistan, along with its protagonists. It is quite good movie for our children to watch, so that, their imagination may be captured by Pakistani themes and local problems. The film revolves around the life of one nature-loving young school boy Allahyar (voiced by Anum Zaidi) who detests bullies and poachers. His life is turned upside down when a friendly Markhor named Mehru (Natasha Humera Ejaz) lands on his door in a cage and he decide to save her from the hunter Mani (Ali Noor) and his accomplices. Before the opening credits roll in “Padmaavat,” a disclaimer carefully notes that the film is based on an epic poem that is considered a work of fiction. So, please, don’t be offended or expect authenticity about a long list of things, right down to the dance forms. Before the movie was released, a few changes were made. They include the addition of that detailed disclaimer and a revised title, “Padmaavat,” which aligns more closely with the poem, but doesn’t match the name of the heroine, Padmavati. As the film stands now, no one need be concerned about the honor of Rajputs, as warriors or paragons of virtue. It’s also something of a bore: a lavish 3-D pageant with the depth of a children’s pop-up book. Those paragons, Padmavati (Ms. Padukone) and her king, Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor), dressed in gorgeous silks and bangles, are more heaven to look at than delightful to know. They meet epic-poem cute: Hunting deer in the forest with bow and arrow, Padmavati misses her target (or does

56

she?) and instead hits Ratan Singh right in the ticker. Boom. He takes her to his kingdom and installs her as Wife No. 1. (A pre-existing wife gets a demotion and a few halfhearted jealousy scenes.) Soon, Allaudin (Ranveer Singh), a sultan conquering great swaths of India — Delhi is his latest acquisition — hears of Padmavati’s beauty. Because he must possess everything precious, he must have her. Epic battles ensue. And Padmavati is a death-before-dishonor type, so spoiler, she immolates herself when Allaudin breaches the fort. This film's antediluvian attitude to sex and morality are obnoxious to say the least. Even more out of line is the petty and manipulative manner in which it feeds into popular prejudices against those that do not belong to the 'pure' Hindu universe. The Muslim ruler of half of India, Alauddin Khilji, is presented as an unprincipled brute, likened to the asuras (demons of Hindu mythology), and even Yamraj (the god of death).

The Rajput king, in contrast, is genteel, upright and governed by a strict moral code. In the world conjured up by Bhansali, the Sultan of Delhi is inevitably the 'outsider' who has evil designs on Mewar's honour - the King's second wife, word about whose unparalleled beauty reaches his ears via a banished Rajput spiritual head. Alauddin marches to Chittor to wrest the woman for himself, but his plans are repeatedly thwarted. Our hearts have more strength than Alauddin's sword, the Rajput King declares. No matter how tough the woman is - Rajputi bangles are as strong as Rajputi swords, the Queen says at one point - it is the men who get to decide the fate of this human bone of contention.

The movie aims to shed light on the preservation and illegal hunting of wildlife, with main characters Mehru and Chakku, a snow leopard being endangered species. In a land not so far away, there’s a species that’s hunted illegally. In the last several decades, it was classed as ‘endangered.’ However, with the recent ‘revival,’ it has now been relegated to ‘Near threatened.’ That species is not Markhor; it’s storytelling. The film also has its shortcomings — the language at times is too hard for kids to understand, while the pace takes a

Allahyar

The Legend of Markhor Verdict: Go watch it for the excellent visual quality and the strong message underlying. But parents, be ready to answer your children’s questions, specifically regarding the difficult language. Rating: 4 out of 5 stars break every time it moves from one scene to another. There are a few jokes that might not be appropriate for both kids and adults, without which the film might have done even better. However, the cinematography, the quality of animation and the choreography of songs is top class and makes you want to take your children to watch the film where animals speak Urdu and humans save them instead of killing them. This film is one that needs not to be missed at all. Allahyar and Markhor is not just for the children but also for adults. It would stir you into action, and would make you begin to care more not just about the nature, but also endangered animals. It was obvious why it will remain one of the most memorable stories for children for many years.

It is highly ironic that a film designed to lionize the Rajput community should have run afoul of the very people that it is out to show in the brightest possible light. In fact, Padmaavat is the sort of film that hinges on the very binaries that underline the thought processes of Hindu supremacists. It wends its way with intent through and around a narrative marshland overflowing with chauvinism, regression and misogyny.
