HOPE - CHRISTMAS IN UGANDA

Christmas in Uganda

by marjorie williams

here are 24 orphans in Uganda eagerly awaiting a gift from their Aunties in Newfoundland. Six years ago, a very devoted supporter of H.O.P.E. (Helping Orphans Prosper through Education), Catherine Bailey, vowed to make sure these children had a gift to open on Christmas morning.

Six years ago, when we started to support these children, food, water and clothing were our first priority. They were living in conditions that were hard to believe existed in a world where we have so much. We simply could not walk away from these beautiful children we came to love.

Eventually we learned that education was the most important thing one needed in order to break the cycle of poverty they were engulfed in. H.O.P.E. currently has all 24 children enrolled in a full-time private boarding school which allows them to have constant and reliable access to food, water, shelter, healthcare, education, supervision and compassion. We were also very fortunate to hire a doctor to take care of their medical needs. So basically, we covered all the needs of the children, but the one thing they needed was to know how much they were loved. That small Christmas gift that they waited for, even prayed for, did just that.

Every year Catherine calls upon her friends and family to donate. If you knew her, you would understand how persistent she is to raise as much money as possible.

We purchase the gifts, and get together, along with our elves, to wrap the presents and write cards to the children, and off to Uganda it goes. Sometimes by Canada post, sometimes by courier, and albeit expensive, they always arrive on time.

The best delivery was when Marjorie and Betty of H.O.P.E. delivered the gifts personally. This year again, they are being personally delivered by Santa Claus (aka Eddie Joyce).

Knowing that each child will receive some candy, a small toy, some clothes, a teddy bear, anything at all helps make the children so very happy. It is nowhere near the Christmas gifts our children have become accustomed to receiving these days.

We also provide them with an extra special meal, which would include pop and a Christmas cake. They typically make a field day event in celebration!

HOPE is so happy to have Catherine on our team. Christmas is a time for giving, and giving these children the knowledge that they are loved and cared for, is worth all the effort of getting these gifts all the way to the middle of Africa. Our love for them is bigger than that. If there was ever a definition of the true meaning of Christmas, this is it.

How are you feeling today? Take this moment to take the biggest breath you’ve taken all day…Inhale – Exhale, relax your shoulders-release any tension held in your jaw and offer yourself a moment to be present.

Island of Newfoundland &

Labrador – where the ocean is all around me and the rugged earth grounds me.

My husband Justin, our beautiful children, Julia (6) and Alex Jane (4) , Rosie Dog and I live outside of the city in a little town called Avondale, where we spend as much of our time out in nature, on the beach, entertaining friends, cooking meals together and cuddled up watching family movies. About eight years ago, I started my own wellness journey after a series of life pitfalls and became very in tune with my own body and mind and the power we hold. Since 2014, I have become a mother of two, and a wife. While working full time in a corporate job, I worked very hard to become a Registered Natural Therapist of Canada, Certified Foot & Ear Reflexologist, Reiki Master, Level II Healing Touch practitioner, Indian Head Massage Practitioner and Certified Kids Yoga and Mindfulness Teacher. I am currently back in school for Yoga Therapy and Yoga Teacher Certifications.

I am so proud and honored to scream it from the mountain tops that on July 30, 2021, a decade long dream came true when I opened the doors to the Cottage Retreat as the official day of owning my own business. One that is designed to serve and nurture our communities. (Yes, I opened a business amidst a global pandemic).

I am the Owner/Practitioner of Central Wellness, a natural therapy business where I work with clients 1:1, host group retreats (in person and virtual and guide “The Mug Up Meditation Experience”).

A core value of Central Wellness is to offer the client a safe space to land by creating an open and inclusive environment. On a global scale, people are feeling more stressed, overwhelmed, dealing with anxiety as well as feelings of depression. The natural therapy offered at Central Wellness provides the benefits of reducing stress and anxiety and creating a feeling of well being on a physical, emotional, and mental wellness level. The goal of Central Wellness is to create a healing space locally as well as globally. Through social media, I’m on a community building mission to empower healing and growth by connecting with global community members. In February 2022, I will be launching my first ever course that will be focused on connecting with ourselves, understanding our energy centers, working through the $#it and meeting ourselves where we are so that we can be present, find joy and feel good! The Mug up meditation is a perfect blend of self-care practices with a Newfoundland twist. It’s definitely an original experience I would highly recommend for anyone, no matter if you just started practicing meditation or you have been doing it for years. Not only is Lindsay a genuine and caring soul, she has such an incredible ability to create a beautiful and welcoming space that can immediately put anyone at ease. I was especially impressed with the way Lindsay walked through her mediation. As an individual who has practiced for over 10 years, I was impressed with Lindsay’s language and approach which fostered an experience that brought such clarity and connection to the material, promoting an internal journey of acceptance and rejuvenation. If you are looking for some quality ‘ you time’ to help you re-center. Lindsay is the perfect guide.

Creating Beautiful Homes To Live In

friendship created through design

Using a combination of different shades of blues, beiges and creams made for a very serene and cozy feel in this living room space.

A HOME TO CHERISH

Creating a beautiful home for one of my most cherished friends was a labour of love. Rosa had a vision for her new family home and I was determined to makes her dream come true.

A ROOM DESIGNED FOR PRACTICALITY, FUNTIONALITY AND BEAUTY!

The love felt in this home was quite evident when working on this intriguing home design project with my wonderful client/friend Roja.

Lily, their beautiful family dog was always there to greet me at the front door. She is cherished by all family members and treated with so much love and tenderness. It is endearing to watch.

MAKING MEMORIES a fabulous family room

ojR a wanted her family room to exude a certain calmness so that's exactly what I did.

This very well thought out family room was pulled together using a very soft palette of colours.

I started with my inspirational piece which was the area carpet. A beautiful 8x10 in a light gray with a cream background and a hint of blue was where

I built upon my design colour scheme.

From there I chose a classy linen look fabric in a medium gray for the sofa and love seat, and a light cream tufted ottoman with storage so that the family could house their cozy blankets and reading material. This piece also offers a top that flips over and turns into a hard top coffee table. It is a very versatile piece indeed.

The two open wall storage units were a great find in Roja wanting to display her most treasured items. It also serves as a book shelf which makes it a perfect fit for a family of avid readers in this very well used family room space.

Wrapping the walls in a soft warm gray set the tone for this well appointed family room. It tied everything in together and made for a very cohesive contemporary backdrop.

A space is never complete however until you accessorize. Accessorizing is the key to achieving the final desired look. I chose some very pretty soft white and cream flowers along with some patterned and plain thrown cushions. A picture was placed above a small console table that encompassed a beautiful palette of earth tones and a textured wicker basket was placed in front of the beautiful elegant marble fireplace to house a beautiful soft throw and a cozy cushion. A space is never complete until you accessorize. Accessorizing is the key to achieving the final desired look. It' s all in the details.

LIVING ROOM

The best part of this wonderful job that I am so blessed to have is meeting people like my very treasured friend Roja. We had so much fun working on the design project. Thankyou Roja for your friendship and hospitality. It was an absolute pleasure.
