If a Tree Falls in the Forest… WBGO KIDS JAZZ CONCERT SERIES CELEBRATES 20 YEARS ost people have heard the question: if a tree falls in the forest, and no one is there, will it make a sound? That expression is especially poignant for a community public radio station that produces a jazz series for young people. While WBGO’s Kids Jazz Concert Series includes amazingly talented performers, beautiful venues, informative question and answer sessions and fun times, all at no cost, we wanted to know how we could reach even more kids, so that our “trees” make as much sound as possible! Enter The Agnes Varis Trust, whose mission is supporting affordable access to the arts, education and healthcare. Through the generous support of the WBGO Kids Jazz Concert by the Varis Trust, plus PNC and the Coleman Family Charities and others, WBGO will be able to celebrate the 20th anniversary season of the Kids Jazz Concert Series with more young people than ever before. How? The grant dollars will support a newly launched program to provide transportation to youth organizations in Essex County to get young people to and from each of the five concerts this April and May. WBGO kicks off the 20th Kids Jazz Concert Series on Saturday, April 6 at Newark Symphony Hall. These free Saturday afternoon concerts will bring jazz culture and performance to five Essex County, New Jersey venues. The interactive, hour-long programs give young people opportunities to learn about the distinct qualities of jazz, and why it is a reflection of our community, nation, and world. The performers produce special programs tailor-made for young people. All concerts begin at 12:30pm, and are free. Adults must be accompanied by a child.

The Checkout— Live at Berklee BGO and Berklee College of Music continue with year two of The Checkout—Live at Berklee, a program in which critically acclaimed, New York-based performers return to their Berklee roots and perform for the world from Boston’s Cafe 939. On Thursday, March 7 at 8pm, you can tune in or log on to hear Walter Smith III (Berklee class of 2002) with Taylor Eigsti, Harish Raghavan, and Calrence Penn. From a young age, Walter Smith III began taking music very seriously: “My first gig was playing at a McDonald’s in Houston with another saxophone player. I took a solo on ‘Blue Bossa.’ It was terrible. People clapped, and I figured if I could get away with that and get applause, how could I fail?” Smith began playing the saxophone at the age of seven in his hometown of Houston, Texas. While at Houston’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, he received a Clifford Brown/Stan Getz Fellowship from IAJE and NFAA; the NFAA Young Talent Award; a full-tuition scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music; and a United States Presidential Scholar in the Arts medal. He graduated from Berklee in 2003 with a degree in music education. Smith has performed all over the world, in numerous national and international festivals and on famed stages in the U.S. such as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy

Center. He has shared the stage and appeared on recordings with many jazz notables, including Terence Blanchard, Roy Haynes, Christian McBride, Eric Reed, Mulgrew Miller, Joe Lovano, Bob Hurst, Myron Walden, Walter Beasley, Lewis Nash, Terri Lyne Carrington, and a host of others. To date, he has appeared on more than 75 recordings that are released worldwide. Over the past few years, besides leading a quintet, Smith has been a member of several recording and touring groups, including the Terence Blanchard Quintet, Eric Harland’s Voyager Band, Ambrose Akinmusire’s Quintet, Christian Scott’s group, the Sean Jones sextet, Jason Moran’s Big Bandwagon, and the Christian McBride Situation band. You can hear the performance on March 7 at 8pm on WBGO Jazz 88.3FM and also see the performance, streamed live worldwide at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, on WBGO’s blog— www.wbgo.org/blog.
