e want you with us, on your feet and dancing from time zone to time zone, east to west, Atlantic to Pacific. In Boston, a master of the guitar universe and his jam band segue to a youthful, AfroBeat group led by a drummer from Puerto Rico. In New York, the partiers might rush the stage (they did last year) as a trumpeter on the jazz pinnacle and his band play us into 2013, Eastern Time. A respect-
ed, beloved Chicago vocalist turns up the power for “Funkin’ with Electric Soul: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix and James Brown.” And a Los Angeles big band and its original, outgoing arrangements take us across the finish line, onstage at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Through the night and coast to coast, Toast of the Nation is the annual New Year’s Eve special anchored by WBGO’s Rhonda Hamilton.

WBGO’s Champions of Jazz Benefit REVIEW BY TIM WILKINS
Neither wind nor rain nor sleet nor snow could stop us!
I
t takes more than hurricanes and blizzards to stop WBGO. With trains, planes and roads still disrupted by Hurricane Sandy, and a Nor’Easter whipping through the region, a full house of WBGO supporters found their way to the Allen Room for the 2012 Champions of Jazz Benefit on November 7 to share and celebrate the music and the station they love. Every year this event honors individuals who make extraordinary contributions to jazz. This year’s event highlighted three essential aspects of this work—in law, business and performance. Hogan Lovells, the global law firm which has represented WBGO for four years, was the evening’s first honoree. The second, Bruce Lundvall, is a record producer and executive who nurtured dozens of stars, including James Taylor, Richard Marx and Willie Nelson. But Lundvall’s first love is jazz: as president of CBS Records, then at the helm of the
4
Upbeat Jan./Feb. 2013
Elektra/Musician and Blue Note labels, he introduced the world to the talents of Wynton Marsalis, Dianne Reeves, Norah Jones and many others. Indeed, Lundvall was the evening’s guiding musical spirit. A bebop fan and saxophonist since his youth, he made requests for tunes he loves from his front row seat in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Allen Room, as a heavy snowfall blanketed Columbus Circle outside. Musicians played selections from “Bruce’s Juke Box”—songs which marked milestones from his career—and shared stories from the stage. Trumpeter Marcus Printup, clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera and producers Michael Cuscuna and Tommy LiPuma all told how Bruce’s unshakeable faith in their talents helped launch their careers, often at great risk to his own. As a tribute to Lundvall’s legendary ear for fresh talent, two 23-year-old pianists opened the evening. Joe Alterman warmed up guests over cocktails, then

Christian Sands started the concert with a medley of Herbie Hancock’s “Canteloupe Island” and “Dolphin Dance.” Printup then led a tribute to trumpeter Woody Shaw with Sands, tenor saxophonist Walter Blanding Jr., Rodney Green on drums and bassist Dezron Douglas, which included “Moontrane” and “Theme for Maxine,” written for Maxine Gordon, who was in the audience. D’Rivera and pianist Alex Brown played the “Adagio” from Mozart’s second clarinet concerto as a blues, which he joked Lundvall had discovered in some “rare early recordings of Mozart from New Orleans.” Vocalist Bobby McFerrin was the evening’s third honoree, and he, too, chose to celebrate Lundvall in his set. Indeed, he told the audience, his breakthrough 1984 album, The Voice, would never have been recorded if it hadn’t been for Bruce. McFerrin was signed to Elektra/Musician at the time, but he disliked the lush orchestrations producers wanted him to record. Aware of Bruce’s
L–R: The Roots drummer, Questlove and WBGO’s Cephas Bowles

reputation for great ears, he approached Lundvall directly with a different idea: to record a full album of solo vocal improvisation, with no accompaniment or overdubs. “Why do you want to do that?” Bruce asked at their meeting. “Because God wants me to,” McFerrin shot back. Lundvall’s response? “Well, there’s no higher authority than that, so I guess I’m going to go along!” He then hired a crew to record McFerrin’s next concert tour, which became the platinum-selling album. “Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you very much!” said McFerrin, beaming, during the Champions of Jazz event. McFerrin sang two of Lundvall’s favorites—Charlie Parker’s “Scrapple from the Apple” and Thelonious Monk’s “’Round Midnight”—with Cyrus Chestnut on piano, Gil Goldstein on accordion, Al Foster on drums and Doug Weiss on bass, and invited D’Rivera back to the stage for an impromptu version of “A Night in Tunisia.” Drummer of The Roots, house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Ahmir ?uestlove Thompson came on board for the evening’s finale, a musical melee of scat and funk in which McFerrin joyfully rhapsodized about everything from pistachios to the falling snow to close the show. The funds that were raised from the Champions of Jazz Benefit 2012 enable WBGO, via 88.3 FM and WBGO.org, to continue producing programming that is vital to both public radio and jazz, two of the communities that it uniquely serves.

Song Travels with Michael Feinstein
New Program Thursdays at 6:30pm on WBGO
“In this series, we talk about songs. How important they are in our lives . . . how they’ve changed our lives . . . how sometimes they make life worth living.” —Michael Feinstein
T
he renowned “Ambassador of the Great American Songbook” and five-time Grammy® nominated performer Michael Feinstein hosts Song Travels, a new series examining how popular standards and show tunes have evolved through the years. From the production team that brought you Piano Jazz, the program expands upon the genre of American Popular Song and re-imagines it for a new century. In each program, Feinstein sits down with a musical guest to explore American “Music often reflects its time . . . who knows what’s going to happen in 10 years? But to me, it’s a passing parade, and all of it is worthy. People are compelled to make music.”—Bette Midler

Popular Song and the intimate journey singers and songs take with one another, each changing the other through the course of a lifetime. Feinstein commented, “That’s what the show’s about…that it’s a song that’s 100 years old, with an arranger who was famous in the ’40s, working in the ’70s, and yet we’re listening to it now…and it’s absolutely timeless in what it does.” With this new series, Feinstein, a longtime archivist and advocate for the repertoire, re-introduces the original canon of Popular Song tunes through fresh translations. The line-up of performers spans the musical spectrum, including Liza Minnelli, Bette Midler, violinist Joshua Bell, Pink Martini pianist Thomas Lauderdale, and actor David Hyde Pierce; each of whom illustrate the Great American Songbook to a whole new audience. His guests share their passion for the songs through conversation, and occasional performances and duets with Feinstein, illustrating the continuing evolution of the songs across time, as well as each guest’s own musical journey. www.wbgo.org

Lorca wrote verse about it, collected in Poeta en Nueva York (A Poet in New York). Now Cuadrado has set Lorca’s poetry to music, performed by Claudia Acuña, voice; Miguel Zenón, saxophone; Dan Tepfer, piano; the composer on bass; Mark Ferber, drums. Music of the Modern Jazz Quartet From its start in 1952, The Modern Jazz Quartet’s cool, understated style belied its complexity. Pianist John Lewis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Kenny Clarke combined classical music structures with the deep swing of jazz. The MJQ made vital music for over 40 years. Our quartet—drummer Lewis Nash, pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Peter Washington and vibraphonist Steve Nelson – honors those late modern masters.

Re-imagined: The Music of Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea Pianists Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea are kindred spirits—imaginative composers who have fused and redefined the sound of jazz. And we re-imagine works from both of their songbooks—The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with guest Bobby Hutcherson play the music of Herbie Hancock, and The Manhattan Transfer with Jon Hendricks interprets Chick Corea. Jan. 28 Moacir Santos: Journey to Brazil Small bands of street musicians enlivened the streets of Flores do Pajeú, hometown of Brazilian composer and saxophonist Moacir Santos. He’s painted those hometown landscapes in musical score. In the Rose Theater guitarist Mario Adnet and saxophonist Zé Nogueira capture the spirit of Brazil and this little known composer. Feb. 4 Monty Alexander: Harlem-Kingston Express The West Indies meet West Harlem when Jamaican-born pianist Monty Alexander and the Harlem-Kingston Express make a stop at the House of Swing. Alexander (bandmate of Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Brown and Sonny Rollins) brings his disparate worlds and singular voice together to explore the ‘New Calypso bebop’ called “mento”. He’s joined by drummer Herlin Riley and bassist Hassan Shukar. Feb. 11 Wynton Marsalis Quintet Wynton Marsalis debuted his quintet nearly three decades ago. Though he has played as a soloist with orchestras and ensembles in every configuration, Marsalis’ quintets have offered some of the most felicitous settings for his trumpet and imagination. Feb. 18 Nuevo Tango: The Music of Astor Piazzolla and Pablo Aslan Tango and jazz have a natural affinity for one another—both are New World music reshaped by folkloric sensibilities. They found each other under Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla and the pairing continues today with bassist Pablo Aslan. We explore the sounds of modern tango with Aslan, bandoneon giant Nestor Marconi and Paquito D’Rivera. Feb. 25 Bird with Strings In 1949, Charlie Parker envisioned an album that would link jazz to pop and influence artists to come. His legendary venture with strings has done just that. Charlie Parker with Strings set his searching solos against a lush string quartet. And onstage Bird lives— as we feature saxophonists Wess Anderson and Charles McPherson and the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas. 7:30 PM NJ CAPITOL REPORT Emmy Award-winning anchors Steve Adubato and Rafael Pi Roman host New Jersey Capitol Report which examines New Jersey’s most pressing public and policy issues. You will spend a luxurious weekend at the Loews Hollywood Hotel located at the legendary Hollywood and Highland center—home to Graumann's Chinese Theater, less than one mile from the festival site.
