in the wbgo GALLERY WBGO CELEBRATES 35 YEARS WITH THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF BILL MAY April 7–June 30, 2014

P

hotographer Bill May is a veteran of music and the arts in New Jersey. Formally trained as a musician, May has performed regularly as a freelance musician throughout New Jersey and New York as a double bassist, playing orchestral music, operas and shows. Most notably he spent 26 years with the NJ Pops L–R: Bob Porter, Michael Bourne, Bill Cosby, Symphony Orchestra as co-principal and Gary Walker, Rhonda Hamilton principal bassist. May is a former WBGO Community Advisory Board Member. He is also an educator, having served with the Newark Public Schools as both a teacher and administrator. His last administrative position with the district was Director of Visual and Performing Arts. During his tenure as Director, arts education was expanded to not only visual arts and music, but dance and theatre as well. Additionally, arts education was provided to every student in the district with unique opportunities such as the Newark Early Strings Program, a partnership with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra; partnerships with The Newark Museum on programs such as Express Yourself and Arts Infusion; as well as other partnerships arts organizations such as the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Lincoln Center Institute, the Manhattan Theatre Club and WBGO. To help WBGO celebrate 35 years of broadcasting jazz from the arts district in Newark, May selected 102 of his black and white photographs which are all directly connected to the history of the station. The photos include musicians who have performed in the WBGO Performance Studio, WBGO on air announcers and staff, and WBGO events in and around Newark. Please visit WBGO.org/gallery to get more information on the exhibit, and to find the date of the gallery reception for this exhibit.

• Jazz on the Mountain at Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, NY (January 2015) • Perú Behind the Scenes: An adventure in music, culture & food (February 2015) This year, there are two trips to the Montreal Jazz Festival to choose from, so that both new travelers and those who enjoyed the trip last year will have something unique to experience. For specifics on the individual packages, visit WBGO.org/events. Celebrating the Newport Jazz Festival’s 60th Anniversary, WBGO Travel & Events offers convenient one day and weekend (three or four night) travel packages to the 2014 Newport Jazz Festival. Each one day trip provides roundtrip bus transportation that takes you directly to the festival gate from a convenient location in either New York City, Boston, Brooklyn or Newark, NJ (the latter two locations are new this year!). Heading to Brazil, the first stop will be Salvador da Bahia, a town of revelry, steeped in a vibrant African culture and an endemic contagious joy. During this part of the journey, explore sites and activities that are most representative of the African influence, the country’s customs,

sights and sounds. During your stay, Dia da Consciência Negra (Black Consciousness Day) will be observed. This annual event commemorates the death of the legendary leader Zumbi, the last leader of a quilombo, a runaway slave community. The day features soundstages throughout the historical center of Salvador with performances by leading musicians and artists. Then on to Rio as it gets ready for Carnival! WBGO travelers will have the unique opportunity to visit one of the main samba schools to see how its members, mostly volunteer based, design and create the exotic floats and costumes that will be paraded during Carnival. Jazz music is vibrant, spontaneous and eclectic. Break the boundaries and explore the roots and history of the music you enjoy. Experience the performances in person and find yourself up close and personal with the artists, or taste the culinary delights from a region you have always wanted to visit.
