listeners’ favorite blues artists, according to the 2012 Blues Poll conducted by Blues Hour host Michael Bourne. Held at the same time as our annual Thanksgiving Jazz Parade, which asks listeners to rank their favorite jazz artists in a variety of categories, Bourne asks his listeners to vote on their top three blues performers by emailing him directly at mbourne@wbgo.org. The poll closes at 4pm the day before Thanksgiving. 2012 was the fourth year Waters came out on top in the poll. Last year, Buddy Guy and Howlin’ Wolf tied for second place, one of several ties out of the 106 total artists who received votes. There were also a number of newcomers in last year’s results:

wbgomembership

Dear Members and Friends, In our constant effort to be good stewards of your membership dollars, we continually work to enhance your membership experience while simultaneously putting the maximum resources into the programming you enjoy. To that end, last year we introduced the online version of Upbeat, WBGO’s Program Guide. This completely interactive version of Upbeat, gives you access to more content via links and bonus items, and can be accessed by visiting wbgo.org/upbeat. Our enhanced online Upbeat, will begin to replace our printed version in 2014. We will reduce the number of printed copies so we can reduce the costs of production and postage. This move will also allow us to preserve natural resources and reduce our carbon footprint. Beginning January 2014 the printed version of Upbeat will be mailed to current and new Sustaining Members only. If you became a member in 2013 you will continue to receive Upbeat,by mail until the anniversary of your membership. If you become a Sustaining Member in 2014, you will also receive Upbeat by mail. By January 2015, only Sustaining Members will receive the printed version, but everyone can enjoy the online version. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support, understanding and cooperation as we make this necessary adjustment. If you have questions or concerns about this change, or any aspect of your WBGO Membership, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 973-624-8880 ext 301. Regards, Membership Services

Our next WBGO Board of Trustees meeting will be held on Monday, November 25, 2013 at 6pm. The meeting will be held at WBGO, 54 Park Place, Newark, NJ 07102. This meeting is open to the public.

Prohibition and the Jazz Age “The parties were bigger…the pace was faster…and the morals were looser" (F. Scott Fitzgerald). Prohibition was intended to stifle vice – but instead, it nourished crime and the clubs that would become a hot bed for jazz. Ken Burns joins Wendell Pierce to bring us the sound of the speakeasies in the work of Beiderbecke, Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson. Songs like “Snake Dance,” “New Orleans Bump,” and “Variety Stomp” will doubtless provoke merrymaking on par with the era of bathtub gin and backroom carousing. Special guests Doug Wamble and Vince Giordano join the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

BGO celebrates the season with the addition of holiday music to our airwaves. Last year, Rhonda Hamilton and Monifa Brown shared their favorite jazz holiday classics with readers of Upbeat, and this year, Awilda Rivera wanted to let our readers know her favorites. She shared her top five Scrooge themed songs, for days when you’ve just had it with department store “Jingle Bells.” Enjoy!

“Christmas Morning Blues” By Victoria Spivey Release: Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 1: 1926–1927 This song is one of the earliest blues recordings to feature a less-than-thrilled-aboutChristmas theme. “Christmas Tears” By Freddie King Release: 17 Greatest Hits Freddie King makes no bones about how he regards the notion of spending Christmas alone. Song Excerpt:

I hear sleigh bells ringin’ but I haven’t heard a word from you in years (x 2) Ooooh I hear choirs singin’ and I’m just sittin’ here cryin’ Christmas tears Everybody’s singin’ ‘Merry Christmas’ as they watch the starry skies filled with reindeers (x 2) I’m smiling on the outside but on the inside I’m cryin’ Christmas tears “Blue Xmas (To Whom It May Concern)” By Miles Davis & Bob Dorough Release: Jingle Bell Swing Song Excerpt:
