HONOREES CEPHAS BOWLES Cephas Bo wles, a pro ud Newark native with a no table reputatio n in public radio , will be ho no red fo r his 20 years o f leadership at WBGO. Cephas’ career in radio spans 40 years, beg inning at CBS News in New Yo rk City in 1974 as Assistant Pro ducer fo r Spectrum. In 1978, he mo ved to Tucso n, Arizo na to wo rk fo r KUAT, ultimately serving as the Radio Statio n Manag er there fro m 1983 thro ug h 1990, as well as the University o f Arizo na’s Acting Directo r o f the Divisio n o f Media Studies. Cephas also served o n a number o f po licy and pro g rammatic co mmittees and adviso ry bo ards fo r the City o f Tucso n, the University o f Arizo na, NPR, and the Co rpo ratio n fo r Public Bro adcasting . He was a co -fo under o f Blacks in Public Bro adcasting , and a lo ng standing co mmittee member o f the Tucso n Co mmunity Fo undatio n. Cephas relo cated to Newark in 1993 taking o ver as General Manag er at WBGO, and was named President and CEO in 2009. A staunch advo cate fo r public radio bo th lo cally and natio nally, Cephas’ co ntributio ns to the viability and g ro wth o f WBGO led to the statio n beco ming the leading jazz radio statio n in the United States, and arg uably the wo rld. Under his leadership, WBGO became the primary jazz co ntent pro ducer fo r NPR. Cephas led the charg e fo r capital impro vements to the statio n’s headquarters in Newark, as well as the Sig nal Impro vement Pro ject, which invo lved installing a new transmitter and antenna ato p 4 Times Square in New Yo rk City. Wo rking with the Newark Public Radio , Inc. Bo ard o f Trustees and a determined staff, WBGO’s annual o perating budg et mo re than do ubled and staff size increased sig nificantly. Cephas served o n the bo ard o f directo rs o f Natio nal Public Radio , Inc. where he was the Chairman o f the Investment and Administratio n/Finance Co mmittees. He serves as a lo ng standing member o f the Newark Reg io nal Business Partnership Bo ard o f Directo rs, and is a bo ard member o f the Syracuse University Jazz Appreciatio n So ciety. Since January 2002, he has served o n the zo ning bo ard o f adjustment fo r the to wn o f Do ver, New Jersey. Previo usly, Bo wles served o n the Bo ards o f the Natio nal Jazz Museum in Harlem and the Newark Arts Co uncil. In 1998, The Star-Ledger, New Jersey's mo st pro minent newspaper, named Cephas o ne o f the States' mo st influential arts leaders. In 1997, City News, a leading New Jersey-based weekly newspaper, named him o ne o f the 100 mo st impo rtant New Jersey arts leaders. During the co urse o f his tenure, Bo wles has been a recipient o f many awards and ho no rs in suppo rt o f his wo rk at and fo r jazz, public radio and Newark. Its missio n is to o ffer the wo rld's mo st pro mising yo ung musicians co lleg e level training by internatio nally acclaimed jazz masters and to present public scho o l-based jazz educatio n pro g rams fo r yo ung peo ple aro und the wo rld. Their pro g rams are o ffered free o f charg e to the students and scho o ls, and enco urag e children to develo p imag inative thinking , creativity, curio sity, a po sitive self-imag e, and a respect fo r their o wn and o thers' cultural heritag e. Since 1989, the Institute has g o ne into public scho o ls, intro ducing millio ns o f yo ung peo ple to jazz and its rich histo ry. Fo cusing o n a different instrument each year, the co mpetitio n's all-star judg ing panel has included Quincy Jo nes, Hug h Masekela, Steve Turre, Christian McBride, Diana Krall, Pat Metheny, Ro y Haynes, Branfo rd Marsalis, Ro y Harg ro ve, Marian McPartland and many o thers. The hig h-pro file annual event has launched the careers o f Marcus Ro berts, Jo shua Redman, Chris Po tter, Jacky Terrasso n, Jo ey De Francesco , Ben Williams, Jane Mo nheit, and Tierney Sutto n, to name a few. The 2013 winner is a featured perfo rmer to nig ht, saxo pho nist Melissa Aldana. The United Natio ns Educatio nal, Scientific and Cultural Org anizatio n (UNESCO) desig nated April 30 as Internatio nal Jazz Day (IJD) in o rder to hig hlig ht jazz and its diplo matic ro le o f uniting peo ple in all co rners o f the g lo be. As the lead no npro fit o rg anizatio n charg ed with planning and pro mo ting this annual celebratio n, UNESCO and the Institute presented three hig hpro file pro g rams featuring do zens o f wo rld-reno wned artists fo r the inaug ural IJD in 2012: a daylo ng celebratio n in Paris at UNESCO wo rld headquarters; a sunrise co ncert in New Orleans' Co ng o Square; and a sunrise co ncert at the United Natio ns General Assembly Hall in New Yo rk City. Istanbul, Turkey served as the 2013 Glo bal Ho st City and presented a series o f jazz educatio n pro g rams, master classes and perfo rmances with wo rld-reno wned musicians. WHO'S WHO Melissa Aldana Aldana is a 24 year o ld teno r saxo pho nist & co mpo ser bo rn in Chile. She received the Berklee Presidential Scho larship in 20 0 7. In Sept. 20 13, Aldana became the first female instrumentalist to win first prize at the Thelo nio us Mo nk Institute’s annual jazz co mpetitio n in the 27 year histo ry o f the event! Melissa recently wo n the Altazo r Award in Chile fo r best Jazz reco rd o f 20 10 – 20 12.
Carl Allen Artistic Directo r o f Jazz Studies at Juilliard since 20 0 8 . Carl has been the drummer o f cho ice fo r many jazz and po p artists including: Benny Go lso n, Freddie Hubbard, Jennifer Ho lliday, Sammy Davis Jr., Branfo rd Marsalis, James Mo o dy and Lena Ho rne. Allen is the co -fo under o f Big Apple Pro ductio ns, leads the quintet, Carl Allen and New Spirit and is co -leader o f the AllenWhitaker Pro ject.
Kenny Barron The Philadelphia native has appeared o n hundreds o f reco rdings and is co nsidered o ne o f the mo st impo rtant & influential mainstream jazz pianists since the bebo p era. Named an NEA Jazz Master in 20 10 , Kenny is a multiple-Grammy® no minee. As co mpo ser, arranger, bandleader and educato r (pro fesso r at Rutgers University fro m 19 73-20 0 0 ) his sense o f style & grace is unparalleled amo ng jazz pianists.
Don Braden A multi-instrumentalist adept at many musical situatio ns including: his o wn bands, big bands, co mmissio ned wo rks, pro ducing, arranging, film & televisio n sco ring and educatio nal clinics, Braden has served as Music Directo r o f bo th the Litchfield Jazz Camp & NJPAC's Wells Fargo Jazz fo r Teens fo r o ver 13 years. Braden was recently appo inted Co o rdinato r o f Jazz Studies at Mo ntclair State University.
Mike Clark Reco gnized as o ne o f America’s fo remo st jazz & funk drummers since his wo rk with Herbie Hanco ck in the early 19 70 ’s, Mike’s beats with The Headhunters are so me o f the mo st sampled in hip ho p. Clark also has a sterling reputatio n as a jazz drummer. Check o ut his recent wo rk with Wo lff & Clark Expeditio n and his reco rdings as a leader. Mike regularly gives clinics and has bo o ks & DVD’s o n drumming.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble Hypno tic Brass Ensemble are eight bro thers fro m the so uth side o f Chicago who se family asso ciatio ns included: the musical ho tho use o f 19 40 ’s St. Lo uis and Sun Ra in the 19 50 ’s. Once o ut o f scho o l, they bro ught their musicianship, jazz ro o ts & hip ho p sensibilities to gether. Jazz House Kids Ensemble Jazz Ho use Kids is a co mmunity-based arts o rganizatio n, in Mo ntclair, New Jersey, with a missio n to pro vide year-ro und musical, educatio nal, and cultural pro grams to students in grades K-12, teachers, adults, and families fro m diverse backgro unds. Daryl Johns Jo hns, a rising jazz star, was a semi-finalist in the 20 0 9 Thelo nio us Mo nk Internatio nal Bass Co mpetitio n. Jo hns was awarded "Best So lo ist" and "Best Original So ng" in Do wnbeat Magazines 20 10 33rd Annual Student Music Awards and was WBGO's Jazz Star o f To mo rro w at the 20 11 Champio ns o f Jazz Gala at Linco ln Center. He attended bo th the NJPAC Jazz fo r Teens and Jazz Ho use Kids pro grams.
Christian McBride Bassist, co mpo ser, arranger, Grammy® Award-winning reco rding artist, educato r, curato r and administrato r, McBride has been o ne o f the mo st impo rtant and o mnipresent figures in the jazz wo rld fo r o ver 20 years. He has appeared with just abo ut every musician imaginable in the wo rlds o f jazz, R&B and po p. He currently fro nts 3 bands: his Trio , Big Band and his quintet, Inside Straight.

WHO'S WHO Newark Arts High Quartet Arts High Scho o l o pened its do o rs to students in September 19 31 as the first o f its kind in the United States. No table graduates include Sarah Vaughan, Melba Mo o re, Co nnie Francis, Wayne Sho rter, Wo o dy Shaw and Savio n Glo ver. The quartet, under the directio n o f The Mo nk Institute’s J.B. Dyas, includes: Rahsaan Pickett – guitar, Galo Inga – piano , Jo seph Quiles – bass, Derek Fykes – drums.
Gretchen Parlato Gretchen was the first place winner o f the Thelo nio us Mo nk Internatio nal Jazz Vo cals Co mpetitio n in 20 0 4. The Do wnbeat Critics Po ll named her Rising Star Female Vo calist in 20 0 7, ’0 8 , ’0 9 and ’11 and the Jazz Times critics vo ted her as # 1 Female Vo calist in 20 11. Her reco rding Lo st & Fo und was # 1 o n the list o f several publicatio ns and radio statio ns in 20 11. Her latest CD/DVD is Live in NYC.
Christian Sands Sands is an emerging fo rce in jazz piano who takes a fresh lo o k at the language o f jazz: stride, swing, bebo p, pro gressive, fusio n, Brazilian and Afro -Cuban. Sands’ mature presence elevates the qualities o f the Christian McBride Trio . As a pianist and co mpo ser, Sands po ssesses an extensive vo cabulary which allo ws him to play and write in almo st any style.
Jaleel Shaw Shaw grew up in Philadelphia and his mento rs included: Odean Po pe & Gro ver Washingto n Jr. After graduating fro m Berklee, the alto saxo pho nist received a scho larship to the Manhattan Scho o l o f Music where he go t his Masters in 20 0 2. Shaw has taught at Temple University & the New Scho o l in NYC. He primarily perfo rms with: The Ro y Haynes Quartet, the Mingus Big Band, and his o wn Quartet & Quintet.
Ray Vega A native o f the So uth Bro nx, this exciting trumpeter, percussio nist, co mpo ser, and arranger’s co nsiderable perfo rmance/reco rding credits include: Tito Puente, Ray Baretto , Mo ngo Santamaria, Jo e Henderso n, Lio nel Hampto n, Mel To rme, Paquito D’Rivera & Arturo Sando val. In additio n to his busy sideman and teaching schedule, Vega fro nts The Ray Vega Quintet (bebo p & beyo nd), and a Latin Jazz Quintet.

He studied classical music fo r eight years, eventually attending Berklee where he became an instructo r after graduatio n. Wo lf is currently the drummer o f cho ice fo r alto saxo pho nist Tia Fuller, and has several reco rdings o ut as a leader. He is co nsidered o ne o f the great new vo ices o f the vibes.

WBGO kicks off its Fall/Winter s eas on with an exciting s eries of mus ic, educational and cultural events while the s tation's award-winning News Department continues to provide in-depth, often exclus ive, coverage of Newark and beyond. The WBGO News Department, which has won more than 60 Public Radio News Directors awards s ince the late '90s and countles s other honors throughout the years , continues to provide in-depth reports through it daily news cas ts and regular news programs . The s tation provided full coverage on the recent Senate Election and was on hand to congratulate and report on Mayor Cory Booker, who will become the State's firs t African-American Senator. The news team als o will lead the coverage of the General Election on Tues day, November 5. Celebrating the 20 s eas on of the Kids Jaz z Concert Series , WBGO not only pres ents top jaz z and blues artis ts in performances tailor made for young people, but with the generous s upport of The Agnes Varis Trus t, provides trans portation as s is tance for organiz ations working with youth in Es s ex County. Well aware that s ome parents are not able to bring their children to concerts , even free ones , and groups that work with families on weekends cannot always afford bus es , WBGO created the Trans portation Fund to alleviate this barrier by giving groups funding to rent bus es and provide a day of cultural enrichment for more kids . The WBGO Art Gallery pres ents s ome of the bes t Jaz z art in the area, featuring local and regional artis ts , many with national followings . The current exhibition, on dis play through December 31, is One More Time, Once: Photography by Tony Graves and George Wirt with photographs , large prints and colorful murals from the inaugural 2012 TD James Moody Democracy of Jaz z Fes tival. WBGO again partners with NJPAC to co-pres ent the TD James Moody Democracy of Jaz z Fes tival, named after Newark's legendary tenor s axophonis t. Now in its s econd year, the fes tival pres ents s even days of concerts , panels and works hops November 4 - 10. Partnering with Gateway 2 for the s econd year to bring free concerts to downtown Newark, WBGO produces the monthly Gateway Concert Series , acros s from Newark Penn Station, at noon on Wednes days . The s eries continues on December 4, with the Steve Nels on Trio led by the vibraphonis t from Pitts burgh whos e New Jers ey ties include receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees from Rutgers and teaching at Princeton. The brainchild of an urban think tank whos e members united in Newark to affect change after the riots of 1967, WBGO 's s eas oned team continues to lead the way in the pres entation of in-depth news and the bes t jaz z parties - on and off the air - as it remains the perfect beacon to s hine the light on Newark and beyond.
