“It’s a perfect match,” says Ben Sidran. “WBGO is the flagship jazz station in the world, and Newport is the flagship festival. So we’re excited to be here, together.” Sidran, a veteran NPR jazz host, author and pianist, was WBGO’s special correspondent at Newport this year, along with his musician and producer Ben Sidran son, Leo. The pair offered musical comTim Wilkins mentary throughout the festival for WBGO-FM, HD2 and at WBGO.ORG/SIDRAN. "What I really love about the feeling this year is that there’s so much talk about the future,” says Leo.

Alexander, Batiste, and other artists like the Brooklyn bands Snarky Puppy and Kneebody—reveal the surprisingly diverse musical tastes of festival founder George Wein.
Hiromi and George Wein Ayano Hisa
“He’s seen so much jazz, he knows what’s coming,” says Alex Ariff, a producer for WBGO’s Jazz Night In America. “He wants to invite younger fans into jazz, so it survives.” Ariff and a crew from NPRMusic followed Wein around all three days of the festival, capturing his interactions with musicians and fans for inclusion in Jazz Jazz Night In America that will air in October to commemorate George’s ninetieth birthday. “You can’t go four feet without someone stopping to thank him,” says Ariff. Many artists commented on how Wein has played a decisive role in their careers, and in the vitality of jazz as an art form. “George had the vision to bring jazz out of the clubs and present it to a broader, much larger audience,” said drummer and bandleader Herlin Riley. “And his
vision is still going on today - that makes playing at Newport very special.” Wein’s big-tent approach is one Jazz Night In America, now on more than a hundred and fifty NPR stations nationwide, finds inspiring. “He’s touched everybody, and welcomed everybody in,” says Katie Simon, JNIA’s executive producer. “He follows artists as they develop, and we’d like to do the same.” This year’s fest also celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of trumpeter Miles Davis’s first performance in Newport, with a new CD box set and panel discussions hosted by author Ashley Kahn. “Newport was the fuse that lit the explosion to Miles’s career,” Kahn told Simon Rentner, in an interview for WBGO’s The Checkout. “This is what really catapulted him into mainstream America.” The nonprofit, outdoor festival is held every year at Fort Adams State Park, and attracts thousands of fans, rain or shine. WBGO has partnered with the festival to bring weekend guests and day travelers directly to the festival’s gates, so they can spend more time enjoying the music.
