A New Show Soars Piano Jazz Rising Stars Thursdays at 6:30pm on WBGO Jazz 88.3FM

F

or over 30 years Marian McPartland has been introducing listeners to musicians who’ve captivated imaginations and enriched our world. A legendary pianist herself, McPartland crafted a show that won a Peabody award and many accolades over its history. At age 92, Ms. McPartland has decided that her talents of thoughtful listening, pointed questioning, and unparalleled experience in jazz would be best served as the artistic director of Piano Jazz rather than its host. She will be overseeing the selection and programming of rebroadcast episodes, providing quotes for the weekly web feature at NPR.org, and guiding the Piano Jazz digital archive project and education website. Before stepping down as host, Ms. McPartland handed the reins over to pianist Jon Weber, and with producer Shari Hutchison, a new series was born, Piano Jazz Rising Stars. Because WBGO strives to deliver fresh and compelling jazz content to our listeners, Piano Jazz Rising Stars with Jon Weber will begin airing on Thursday nights at 6:30pm, in the position that has been so elegantly held by Ms. McPartland. This new program picks up right where Ms. McPartland left-off with insightful interviews of the jazz legends of tomorrow mixed with engaging and unique performances. If you’re a fan of Piano Jazz you may remember Weber, who filled in numerous times for Ms. McPartland. He brings a vast knowledge of jazz history, excellent musicianship, and the ability to coax the very best performances from the amazing artists who visit the show each week. Weber’s extraordinary affinity and passion for music expressed itself when he was just www.wbgo.org

three-years-old, and by the age of six, he had Jon Weber internalized 2,000 stan- hosts Piano dards from his grand- Jazz Rising Stars mother’s piano rolls. According to his online bio his mother recalls a young Weber, “. . . replaying Dr. Suess and Bugs Bunny records, changing the chords every time. He’d invent a different arrangement each time he played a tune, improvising, quoting; shuffling the deck. It was always like a game for him.” This game became a serious profession for Weber as he studied and mastered his craft. He has released three albums including Simple Complex with drummer Mark Walker; tenor sax man Eric Alexander; trumpeters Diego Urcola and Roy Hargrove; bassists Avishai Cohen, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, and Peter Washington; and vibraphonist Gary Burton. As host of Piano Jazz Rising Stars you can expect Weber to introduce you to many welcome wonderful guests including pianist Taylor Eigsti, guitarist Julian Lage, alto saxophonist/vocalist Grace Kelly, vocalist Sachal Vasandani, and the 2011 Thelonious Monk Competition winner, pianist Kris Bowers, just to name a few. We hope you’re excited for Mr. Weber’s fresh perspective, insights and inspired performances with these rising stars of jazz. Of course, you can listen to archives of Piano Jazz whenever you like at npr.org/programs/piano-jazz. WBGO is proud to have broadcast Ms. McPartland’s voice, unique approach, and undeniable grace for so many years. Tune in to this new program and we’re certain you will hear her incredible magnificent influence. Sept./Oct. 2012 Upbeat

A Holiday Treat from Caramoor this Labor Day

Listen at Jazz 88.3FM or WBGO.org Caramoor Jazz Festival

onday, September 3 is Labor Day and if you tune into WBGO that afternoon you can spend some holiday time with Rhonda Hamilton as she samples music from the Caramoor Jazz Festival. The JazzSet team headed to the festival, held July 28, 2012 at the outdoor performing arts center near Katonah, New York, to capture some magic. Opening the 19th Caramoor Jazz Festival you can hear the “supergroup,” The Cookers, led by trumpeter David Weiss with hornmen Eddie Henderson, Craig Handy and Billy Harper. The group has been together five years and has just returned from a tour of the Northwest. The broadcast continues with two winning voices—Gretchen Parlato, this year’s Jazz Journalists Association Female Singer of the Year, and Dee Dee Bridgewater, who received the award in 2011. Both Dee Dee and Gretchen spent July touring Europe, so their transition to the Venetian Theater stage at Caramoor will be graceful.

Not one but two NEA Jazz Masters are on the program. Kenny Barron will play a solo piano set, and drummer Roy Haynes leads his Fountain of Youth Band. Barron will probably wing it. As he told George Kanzler in this month’s New York City Jazz Record, “I rarely do set lists. It works out better for me. Every time I try and do one I’m always sorry I did it. . . . I like to read the audience, see who’s out there” and choose accordingly. “That’s not pandering, it’s just realizing who you’re playing for.” Toward the end of his set, Haynes is likely to get up and dance. We’ll make that a radio highlight. JazzSet’s Grammy® Award winning Technical Director Duke Markos recorded and mixed in Surround Sound. We thank the Caramoor Jazz Festival for supporting this holiday special. Labor Day Special from Caramoor Jazz Festival, Monday, September 3, 1–3pm on WBGO Jazz 88.3FM and www.wbgo.org/caramoor

New Jazz Festival in WBGO’s Hometown!

coverstory

Doorthan Kirk and James Moody

he TD James Moody Democracy of Jazz Festival is coming to WBGO’s block this October, and all of Newark is abuzz. The festival features two anchor events at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) with satellite events throughout Newark. Festival performers include George Benson, David Sanborn, The Manhattan Transfer, Christian McBride and Angelique Kidjo to name a few. The President and CEO of NJPAC, John Schreiber, describes why this exciting new festival bears the late James Moody’s name: “As a non-musician, one of the things I love about Moody—and the reason why we wanted to name a festival after him—is Moody’s sense of joy,” Schreiber says. “That joy, combined with his extraordinary talent, is what can take a civilian and turn that person into a jazz fan. We wanted to create a festival in his honor at the Arts Center that would have a really authentic resonance with New Jersey and, especially, Newark. Newark also deserved a festival of equal caliber to its hometown jazz station, WBGO. WBGO positively represents the city to a local and global audience, NJPAC is

delighted to have them as co-presenter of this historic event.” WBGO President and CEO, Cephas Bowles continued on why Newark is the home for the festival: “Moody is one of the patron saints of Newark, a leading jazz figure who went to high school here, and—by virtue of his celebrity—showed Newark to be a great jazz incubator and town. As a global jazz ambassador, he let people know that Newark, which is only 12 miles from Manhattan, is a vital part of the jazz capital of the world.” The festival will also be host to the first ever Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition, on which WBGO hosts Dee Dee Bridgewater and Michael Bourne will serve as judges during the live finals. Additionally, a new series will launch during the festival, Dorthaan’s Place. This Sunday jazz brunch series is named after and produced by Dorthaan Kirk, who many refer to as the First Lady of Jazz, especially around the halls at WBGO, where she has worked since the radio station’s inception in 1979. Stay tuned to WBGO Jazz 88.3FM and www.WBGO.org for updates on the full schedule for the festival.
