motional Expressions, the oil paintings and watercolors of artist JoAnna Lombardi, will be on display in the WBGO Gallery through August 3, 2012. As a girl, born and raised in Connecticut, Lombardi relied on her imagination and dreams to fulfill her curiosity about the world outside of New Haven. As a young adult she opened the forbidden door to music, art and culture of all ethnic groups. She was particularly draw to Motown and R&B music. To date she has painted the gamut of emotional expression from jamming jazz musicians and sexy rock solos to glimpses into human suffering and poverty. What
ties her work together is her attention to the raw human emotion. “I am not a realist,” she says, “I interpret emotion.” One of her hallmarks is the use of intense color, A Night to electric pinks and purRemember by ples, deep reds and JoAnna Lombardi shocking yellows. The juxtaposition of her raw human themes with bold color technique delivers the meaning of the painting straight to the heart of the viewer. The WBGO Gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm. WBGO is a wheelchair accessible facility.

The Jazz Bee
W
BGO is proud to announce The Jazz Bee, our new showcase for emerging jazz. Broadcast 24 hours a day at 88.3 HD2, The Jazz Bee also streams through our website (WBGO.org/jazzbee), at NPRMusic.org, and will be syndicated to stations nationwide through the Public Radio Exchange. Funded in part by The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, WBGO’s addition of The Jazz Bee doubles the number of hours we broadcast every day, and thus offers an opportunity to introduce listeners to a wide variety of artists and styles. “There is incredible creativity in the rising generation of jazz talent,” says Tim Wilkins, WBGO’s digital content manager. “We want you to hear where jazz is going next.” The Jazz Bee primarily plays new releases by young and emerging artists, as well as highlights from jazz icons during their emerging years. This offers listeners a chance to hear rising jazz stars before they become household names, and makes connections between new sounds and the jazz tradition. “We always keep our ear to the ground,” says Thurston Briscoe, WBGO’s Vice President/Programming and Production. “When we hear something good, we want our audience to hear it, too.” What, you might ask, is a “Jazz Bee?” A bee, of course, is a flying creature that gets your attention fast when it stings. “The Jazz Bee” can do that. But “bee” has another meaning which is more important to us at WBGO: it is a place where people gather to accomplish an important task together, like raising a barn or making a quilt. So WBGO’s The Jazz Bee is where we gath-

er, raise up and celebrate the music we love. Come join us at The Jazz Bee. Among the young artists we have featured on The Jazz Bee are vibraphonist Warren Wolf, drummer Eric Harland and bassist Linda Oh. Jazz icons include past giants, such as pianist James P. Johnson and vibraphonist Red Norvo, and artists active on the scene today, such as trumpeter Wallace Roney and saxophonist Mark Turner. We also played an exclusive interview with pianist Robert Glasper on the release of his new CD, Black Radio, on January 29. Glasper introduced tracks from the album, and explained how he seeks to combine influences from Hip Hop with the works of jazz masters, such as Oscar Peterson and Mulgrew Miller. “One hallmark of the rising generation in jazz is their curiosity,” said Wilkins. “These young artists know where their music comes from, and combine their influences in surprising ways.” HD Radio is a free service which transmits multiple digital signals over a single radio frequency, in addition to an analog signal. WBGO, like many public radio stations, rebroadcasts its FM signal digitally at 88.3 HD1, and The Bee at HD2. HD Radio car and home tuners are available through major retailers. The Jazz Bee will also offer additional content through our website with interviews, videos and articles which highlight different aspects of the emerging jazz scene. Stay tuned for upcoming features on the best new jazz not only from New York and New Jersey, but also Newport, Chicago, Johannesburg, Havana and Tel Aviv.

Felix Hernandez: 25 years on WBGO, the original home of Rhythm Revue In December 2011, as WBGO was powering up a new transmitter in Times Square, another important milestone was reached, Felix Hernandez celebrated 25 years of Rhythm Revue on WBGO. For those who listen to Rhythm Revue, it should come as no surprise that this occasion passed in a quiet fashion, since Felix always puts the classic soul he spins before anything else, even his anniversary. Rhythm Revue debuted on WBGO in 1986.

playing jazz and Broadway musicals on the NPR classical station of Indiana University.” Michael told Upbeat. “I was finishing my PhD (in theatre) in 1972 and I was asked to fill in for the regular jazz jock—for four weeks. I’ve been on the radio ever since. I got my doctorate, but I enjoyed being a DJ more than I wanted to be a theatre professor, and so I stayed. Those four weeks are now forty years, 13 at WFIU, 27 at WBGO in Newark. I do at least use my doctorate: I’m the theatre critic for the WBGO Journal.” Michael celebrates his radio anniversary on Singers Unlimited, Sunday, July 8 10am–2pm. He will play some of the singers and songs he first played in 1972, including actual vinyl! Michael added, “I’ll be playing the ‘new’ (then) albums of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. I’ll also listen back to singers and songs that have meant something special to me through all these years.”
