Woodhead’s Graphic Design and Visual Communication team was formalised as a design discipline within the Architectural practice of Woodhead in 1993.
Capability Statement
environment
Since that time, the team have been involved in a broad range of brand and public facing Graphic Design projects, either working as part of a complete service design team with the Architectural and Interior Design disciplines, or as a stand alone consultancy addressing purely Graphic and Environmental Design. As our project experience demonstrates, Woodhead understands how to visually express the values, messages and brand ideals of an organisation effectively, and has insight into how people perceive the built environment. Having worked in both the private sector and with government agencies, Woodhead is sensitive to how visual information is interpreted and understood, especially to a broad audience with differing expectations and abilities. This unique team also has considerable experience in managing a range of sub-consultants, in areas such as engineering, electrical engineering and construction, to ensure that the designed outcomes utilise the best available and appropriate technologies.
Woodhead’s graphics team is well versed in dealing with statutory and regulatory authorities, as well as the interpretation and application of building standards and best practice codes. Our project teams are typically made up of Visual Communication, Interior Design and Architectural personnel, who bring world’s best practice in design and documentation with regulatory specification. Combining Graphic Design with Architecture and Interior Design in this way gives Woodhead a singular insight into the issues that arise when delivering Visual Communication and Wayfinding elements into the built form. Ultimately this experience and cross disciplined approach has meant that Woodhead can offer unique and tailored solutions, bringing successful outcomes to a broad range of project scales.
tal graphics
Wayfinding is the visual linking of graphic elements to enable the user to identify and navigate a specific path through a given space or environment.
sigange and wayfinding
The importance of effective visual communication solutions cannot be over stated, especially in a public built environment where people can easily become disorientated if their surroundings are unfamiliar or their emotional state is effected (as in, say, a hospital or airport). When this happens, the building’s function can be compromised and even the best planned space can seem confusing to the first time user. The process of establishing an effective system of signage and wayfinding looks to anticipate these issues by planning a user’s journey, and anticipating the information they will need to see in order to build up a mental or ‘cognitive’ map of the space they are in. Woodhead’s Graphic consultancy has worked on many such projects and appreciates how best to address these issues. More than simply providing direction and location, an effective signage system serves to enhance a building’s architecture and therefore people’s experience of it. Signage should be visible but not confrontational, overt but sympathetic to the environment and ultimately present a logical and consistent message to the user. Having worked on a range of Architectural and Interior Design projects, from Airports and Hospitals to Shopping Centres and Universities, Woodhead is able to bring a comprehensive level of experience and understanding to the requirements of each of these projects, and to develop systematically planned and well designed signage and wayfinding systems.
The University of Adelaide, Adelaide, SA
As one of Australia’s oldest and largest tertiary institutions, occupying an extensive range of campus properties across the state, Woodhead was commissioned to provide a complete service in addressing the University’s signage and wayfinding needs, from initial planning and stakeholder consultation, design, documentation and the development of a comprehensive sign style guide, to the tendering and supervision of the fabrication and installation works. At the start of the project Woodhead identified the three main areas that the new program needed to resolve, these being:
1. To develop a wayfinding solution that addresses the needs of new users and visitors to the University (as familiar users, such as staff and long term students, do not use signage to orientate themselves). 2. To visually ‘brand’ the University and present a consistent and logical visual experience to those users without the need to ‘over sign’ the campuses. 3. To design a suite of signs that sit within the various built forms of the University’s building assets, which range in architectural style from the Neo-Gothic, built in the mid 19th Century, to contemporary buildings currently under construction. The project is currently at the fabrication and installation phase with Woodhead working closely with the University’s Building Services division to ensure a successful roll-out.

Murdoch University, Perth, WA
Woodhead’s graphic design consultancy completed design and installation of stage one of an extensive wayfinding signage program for the Murdoch University Campus. This two-staged program addressed all external and internal wayfinding, identification, and disabled access issues throughout the 2.5km2 of campus and includes off site approach from state roads and the surrounding ring road. An 8m high LED events sign has recently been added to the stage one program and has been installed along side the site, to promote Campus activities.
Royal Women’s & Frances Perry Hospitals, Melbourne, VIC
The $250 million Royal Women’s Hospital, is a leading centre for woman’s health in Victoria, benchmarking world standards in clinical and educational standards to deliver a divers range of health and reproductive services. Woodhead’s Graphics consultancy was responsible for the planning, design and documentation for all wayfinding and statutory signage as well as all external site identification signage. The comprehensives program required the development of a branded sign system for both the Royal Women’s Hospital. A complimentary yet unique sign system was designed for the Frances Perry private hospital level and all five car parking levels of this nine level hospital.
The program was staged and approached in a systematic manner and, prior to commencing the design work, there was a comprehensive review and audit of the overall design and masterplan in order to define issues relating to basic traffic flow and facilities location as well as establishing a hierarchy for information delivery. Continuous consultation with key stakeholder and user group representatives was also critical to the effective planning of this project, as the signage system had to be responsive to the users needs and sensitive to varying interpretation.
Royal Women’s Hospital Donor Wall, Melbourne, VIC
The new $250 million Royal Women’s Hospital opened in 2008 on the corner of Grattan Street and Flemington Road in Melbourne’s Parkville. As part of the interiors scheme Woodhead designed a new Donor Wall which aligned with the colour scheme used throughout the hospital and wayfinding system. The concept of the donor wall reflects the idea of a ‘lifeline’ in an abstract design, aimed at creating the effect of a line crossing a heart rate monitor, as you would see in a life support system. This is a strong metaphor for the crucial support all the contributors offer to the Hospital. The design was also intended to resemble the map of Australia, as a subtle reference to the fact this new hospital is the leading Hospital for women in the country.
Flinders Medical Centre, Bedford Park, SA
The Woodhead graphic design consultancy was responsible for developing a complete corporate identity for one of South Australia’s leading teaching hospitals. The transformation included a new logo, stationery, corporate publications format, and a comprehensive signage program. The corporate identity for the Flinders Medical Centre captures the unique and core features of the hospital and its ‘high tech, high-care’ approach. This is conveyed through the use of colour and the abstract motif of a gum leaf in a supportive embrace. The hospital’s international reputation for research is reflected in the image of a molecular element, which dissolves outward to mimic the hospital’s leadership in mapping ‘uncharted territory’ and pursuing ‘new frontiers in research’. Publications produced for the hospital included annual reports and information brochures, designed to reflect the hospital’s commitment to providing high quality patient care.

Changi International Airport Terminal 3, Singapore
Changi International Airport is known as one of the world’s most popular airports. The signage and wayfinding system at Changi’s Terminal 3 was broadly based on the visual experience of the existing Terminals 1 and 2. Using this as a guide required extensive planning and the development of a functional system of that addressed world standards in terms of legibility and functionality. Working closely with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), Woodhead was successful in developing and scheduling an effective and iconic signage system that will efficiently service the airports needs well into the future.
Sabiha Gรถkรงen International Airport, Istanbul, Turkey
The Woodhead Graphic Design team were commissioned to develop an expandable dual language (Turkish / English) wayfinding system for a new terminal building of 320,000 sqm. As a dual language system, nearly double the content, distance/ legibility were constantly reviewed to ensure both were maximised for this large open terminal. The sign forms were influenced by one of the feature architectural elements - the striking wave-like curved roof. All the sign forms were designed with subtle curved face panels.
A complete signage suite was then developed to respond to the various surrounds, for example floor standing signs were adopted in the Departure Hall with its huge 30m high ceilings and suspended signs were used in the 2.66m high Welcome Hall. The end result is a world class integrated signage and wayfinding system that will service the annual 25 million passengers, and beyond.
Smithfield Shopping Centre, Cairns, QLD
Smithfield is a 30,000m² regional shopping centre in northern Cairns. The brief required the signage program, that was to accompany the redevelopment of the site, to: −− Reflect the aspirations of the trade area −− Contribute to the growth and develop as the preeminent centre and community focal point at the northern end of Cairns −− Contribute to increased market share and hence a stronger investment return for the owner Apart from addressing the new aesthetics of the Centre with the design and implementation of selective environmental graphics, the revised signage and wayfinding solution also sought to rationalise traffic flows throughout, and facilitate increased exposure to the smaller tenants as well as improving the customer’s overall experience.

Vivo City Shopping Centre, Singapore
Woodhead was commissioned to review the signage and wayfinding of the newly developed 100,000m² VivoCity shopping centre located on Singapore’s harbour front. With a completion deadline approaching, a comprehensive audit was required with solutions presented to the steering group for consideration. The following main issues were addressed in the review; −− Ensure consistent naming conventions and store names were used throughout the system (to act as landmarks), −− Text heights were increased significantly to operate within the required environment (internally, externally and carpark). −− A hierarchy was developed for wayfinding information that emphasised current floor content and wayfinding nodes. −− Lobby’s were highlighted with level indicators and services listed. Signage designs were revised and graphic elements/ text re-ordered to better present information in an intuitive fashion.
Dubai Mall, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
As one of the world’s largest shopping malls, with over 500,000m2 of floor space and 14,000 car parks, the wayfinding issues presented to the customers in a facility of this size are many and complex. Woodhead was commissioned to review all signage issues relating to the Mall, and to develop a bi-lingual signage ‘path’ (in English and Arabic) that directs and informs user from the start of their journey, as they approach the Mall from the road, to their direction into the Car Park facilities, along to the car park lobbies, to the lift lobbies, and then through to the access into the 4 levels of the Mall itself.
The program then directed through to the various retail levels and F&B facilities as well as highlighting key attractions such as the Ice Rink, Indoor Aquarium and Gold Souk.

Charles Sturt Industrial Estate, Woodville, SA
The Charles Sturt Industrial Estate was a recent acquisition by ISPT (Industry Superannuation Property Trust) that needed to be rebranded and represented to the market. With our Architectural teams working on the re-planning of the existing site, the Graphics team worked to develop a new name, brand identity and signage system. The park (formally known as South Australian Manufacturing Park) was seen as somewhat run down but with potential, given its strategic location between the Adelaide CBD and the Port Adelaide docks. Woodhead Graphics started by developing a name in consultation with the client, that drew from the site’s historic associations. This was then further expanded in the iconic representation combining both ship sails (representing the maritime nature of explorer Charles Sturt) and the triangular iconic saw-tooth roofline of traditional factories on-site. Once the brand identity, typography and colour palette were established, Woodhead then set about working collaboratively with our Architectural planning team to develop a signage and wayfinding suite that would maximise visibility of the estate’s tenants. The new corporate identity was also applied to marketing material that was used to present the Charles Sturt Industrial Estate as a revitalised and attractive corporate location.
