Investment in our Workplaces Woodhead Thought Leadership Woodhead employs a proven consultation process we call ‘discovery, distil, design and deliverTM’ incorporating facilitation methods that engage at every level of an organisation. These methods are built on the concept of ‘education and engagement’, and ensure all are involved in the creation of a work environment that suits their needs.
Sustainability Woodhead are regarded as a leading Sustainable Design practice, this is evidenced by our involvement in the design and delivery of a number of benchmark projects. We have the ability to work with clients to map out a pathway to sustainability and best practice. We have, as an organisation, instituted some minimum bench mark standards to assist with this process. The ‘Woodhead ESD Performance Targets’ are quantifiable measures relating to energy, water and materials. These ESD performance targets apply the ‘Woodhead ESD Essential Requirements’ to capture additional initiatives to lower the overall environmental impact of the building/fitout during design, construction and operation. Our methodology also builds a process to analyse the pros and cons of various rating tools and what is the most appropriate path for the client, in an otherwise confusing array of options and paths.

Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency Canberra, Australian Capital Territory Woodhead has designed the integrated fitout for the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency (DCCEE) new headquarters in Canberra. Designed to achieve a 6 Star Green Star Office Interiors v1.1, the Department’s workplace will continue the Woodhead practice of setting a benchmark in sustainable workplace design. This project presented Woodhead with two distinctly unique design opportunities; Firstly, new environmental benchmarks were established by aligning the Departments vision to produce the most environmentally sustainable large-scale commercial office fitout in Australia, with Woodhead’s knowledge and expertise in sustainable design. The resultant design includes the use of recycled materials ‘green’ walls, natural displacement airconditioning and operable windows, which will all contribute positively to energy efficiency. Secondly, this design opportunity provided scope for further developing Woodhead’s ‘campus’ workplace model and exploring new ways of working, allowing for collaborative spaces and modularisation.
Woodhead has worked closely with the Department to ensure the end result will focus on value and efficiency. The new workplace operates like its own ecosystem, complex yet seamless in its function. Development Bank of Singapore (DBS) Marina Bay Financial Centre, Singapore In March 2011, Woodhead was appointed as Interior Design Consultant for the new DBS Bank Regional Headquarters at Marina Bay Financial Centre, Tower 3, Singapore. Accommodating a headcount of 5,000 staff over 18 floors totaling 70,000m2, it was the largest Workplace project in the market at the time. The areas include client-facing divisions such as Executive Suite, Private Banking, Priority Banking, Consumer Banking, as well as multiple-function facilities such as an auditorium, gymnasium, cafeteria, conference centre. Specialist areas include the Executive Suite, Dealing Room floor for 500 traders, and flagship Branch.
From the stringent RFP selection process and design competition, Woodhead became DBS Bank’s designer of choice for our combined ability to deliver high standards of design integrity, a quality team to service the project, directly relevant prior experience with banking clients at MBFC, and all at a competitive price.
Consolidating its real estate footprint from three buildings into one, this project serves to refresh DBS Bank’s facilities as it forges a new identity and drive cultural change to reflect more openness, transparency and collaboration across the organisation. The internal branding of the new DBS Workplace will express its aspiration to be the #1 Asian bank. It will also create diverse, multiple spaces and opportunities to meet and engage with its clients.

The concept design proposed by the Woodhead design team during the shortlist process captured the spirit of Asia and the approval of the steering committee. Our vision for a multifaceted Workplace environment for DBS Bank is themed around the geography of Asia — with its contour lines, dynamic Asian lifestyle, rich arts & crafts, vibrant market places, as well as tranquil places of meditation. 15
The completed fitout of our new building provides good connectivity with warm and inviting community spaces dispersed across the floors, together with functional, adaptable and effective working environments for our staff and visitors‌ Throughout the design process, extensive consultation was undertaken by Woodhead to ensure that there was significant opportunity for staff to engage in the project and contribute to the fitout design process. This has proven to be a key activity to the overall success and acceptance of the new building. Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Canberra, Australian Capital Territory Woodhead has designed the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations interior fitout, delivering a new building for 2,500 of DEEWR’s National Office staff. The interior design encompasses 40,000m2 office accommodation over 11 levels, and is designed to perform at a 5 star Green Star / 4.5 star ABGR level. Through a series of detailed workshops with DEEWR senior executives and leaders, Woodhead established a series of guiding principles that underpinned all decision making throughout the project. The result is a workplace which demonstrates accessibility and visibility, both literal and metaphoric. The design concept creates an environment that engages human emotions and experiences in a ‘living’ space, a place where the boundaries of work life and home life have blended. A connection stair intersects all 11 floors designed to breakdown departmental barriers, and fostering communication and interaction between staff. Community areas adjacent to the stair well alternate in size, from large to small, between floorplates creating variation and people flow. These social spaces promote a unifi ed presence for DEEWR staff, bringing together ideas about building form, activity and movement to encourage and maximise the interaction and collaboration of staff and visitors.
As part of the base-building provisions, the ground floor will incorporate essential elements such as a major entrance foyer, security post, shower and locker facilities, and a loading bay with waste facilities. The planning approval also provides for a café with an outdoor area to be located on Marcus Clarke Street to provide active street frontage for the new building. Client

Fujitsu, The Gauge - Docklands Melbourne, Victoria Fujitsu’s new Woodhead designed Victorian office is situated in the ‘Gauge’ building at Melbourne Docklands. This new office fitout and workplace has not only contributed to the development of sustainable office design but also provides a corporate bench mark for the design of Fujitsu’s future global workplace. Woodhead’s process of research, collaboration and innovation with the intent of achieving world’s best practice for Workplace design has contributed exponentially to our understanding of the use of suitable materials and finishes. There is a greater awareness of our local products to deliver affordable sustainable outcomes. The contemporary interior design practice is now more focused on the complex nature of the Workplace. Effective workplace design will improve performance and therefore increase productivity. This project experience has developed Woodhead’s environmental design intelligence and growth of our knowledge base which is a key contribution to the delivery of sustainable design for the next generation interior design practice.

Through thoughtful sustainable design, our offices have managed to achieve a workplace designed for people. It is finely attuned to the needs of individuals, where people not only enjoy their work, but others aspire to work there. Allianz Global Assistance Brisbane, Queensland Woodhead was commissioned by Allianz Global Assistance to design new Brisbane office space including a 1,000m2 agile workplace environment ‘Pilot’ aimed at trialling new ways of working. Stage A The project’s first stage provides an initial 500m2 of new office space (Stage A). The workplace environment design concept aims to capture the warm, humanistic, helpful and bespoke nature of the Allianz Global Assistance brand and is expressed through the use of an eclectic range of furniture, lighting and joinery with a ‘hand made’ aesthetic.
Woodhead developed a bespoke technology solution that underpins the agile work concept, which includes:

Australian Taxation Office Headquarters Canberra, Australian Capital Territory The ATO has leased two new buildings in Civic to consolidate a number of their locations in Canberra and meet their stated objectives. Woodhead was commissioned for the interior design and workplace planning for 4,200 staff as an integrated interior design working with the base building architects. Designed to accommodate future change; the planning is robust and flexible, using urban planning principles that allow staff to move through the office spaces easily and comfortably. Notions of streets, lanes, interconnections and town squares drive the language and forms of the overall design, encouraging communication and interaction.

The concept of ‘leaves’ and their changing colours, reflecting Canberra’s four distinct seasons, forms a basis for the graphics and colour palette, with overlaid signage and way-finding enabling staff to easily identify areas. The building configuration has a central core and four glazed facades allowing abundant natural light. The interior design approach maximises access to natural light and views providing an open plan environment. The concept uses the built environment to encourage interaction within the ATO by fostering productivity through creative planning techniques and intelligent design solutions. 23
Applying a strong collaborative approach, the result is one building with a additional central marketplace, hybrid HVAC and heated floor slabs, atrium streets, extensive day-lighting and sunshading, full rainwater harvesting and re-use, four storey cascade stairs and human-scale connections. The net result is significant reduction of carbon emissions against ‘business as usual’.”

Woolworths Support Office Norwest, New South Wales Woodhead was engaged as architectural and design consultants for the masterplan, base-building and fitout for an integrated accommodation solution for Woolworth’s corporate headquarters. The project was the cultural amalgamation of a fiscally strong although geographically disconnected company. The client’s support facilities were previously located in eight separate locations around Sydney. The purpose of the project was to unite the people, optimised into one location, bringing all staff, training facilities and working culture together as one.

Naturally ventilated HVAC central space
Critical to the success of this campus development was the integration of base-building and fitout from the outset. The content and structure of the stakeholder consultation phase identified the key drivers for the fitout and applied these to the base-building design. The buildings are orientated along the axis east-west, providing simple yet robust responses to solar orientation. This has allowed cost effective fixed sun shading to all north facades, reducing heat loads and energy costs. All buildings consist of a series of clean floor plates arranged around a central atrium, providing both a cultural meeting place and a natural light well. Atrium skylights are configured to allow direct sunlight into the heart of the buildings without causing glare or increased heat loads. 25

Coffey International Headquarters Adelaide, South Australia Coffey International partnered with Woodhead to deliver the organisation’s first truly consolidated headquarters in South Australia. The project known as Worldpark 01, brings the Coffey Group from a number of disparate locations across Adelaide into one workplace environment delivering the many benefits of increased knowledge sharing and improved efficiencies.

At the heart of the workplace design is a large central atrium, a “One Coffey” space where the whole organisation can meet as one to celebrate success. The atrium is accessed via an interconnecting stair and includes a communal library, function facilities and lounge. Woodhead have worked closely with the client to apply the Coffey brand to the three dimensional space. Subtle design language references ideas of exploration, typography and the connected network which Coffey operates within. The new workplace for Coffey embodies the group’s aspirations of applying its specialist skills and knowledge to finding solutions that deliver extraordinary outcomes to improve the lives of world communities.

Standard Chartered Bank Marina Bay Financial Centre, Singapore Part of Singapore’s largest commercial fitout project, Woodhead has completed the second stage of the Standard Chartered Bank at Marina Bay Financial Centre in Singapore. The new premises encompass approximately 48,000m2 over 25 floors of Marina Bay Financial Centre, Tower One. Woodhead, as Lead Consultant for the interior design, has designed the fitout consolidating 6,800 staff from twelve facilities into two. The Marina Bay site houses; Consumer Banking, Wholesale Banking, Private Banking, Trading Floors, Executive Offices and Client Meeting Suites, with collocation in one site effecting cost savings and operational efficiencies in its property strategy. Woodhead’s design for the workplace is driven by the bank’s objectives; improving workflow efficiency, engaging multigenerational and cultural fusion in its human capital, and unlocking technology enablers. The resultant workplace demonstrates how design can lead and support cultural change to bring about business goals.
The design team applied ongoing research and knowledge in Environmentally Sustainable Design principles in alignment with Standard Chartered’s corporate Sustainability objectives of operating from buildings which are Green Mark accredited. Wood and Grieve Perth, Western Australia Wood and Grieve Engineers, recently took occupancy of part ground and Level 3 at the 4 Star Green Star Office Design at 226 Adelaide Terrace.
Woodhead worked in collaboration with Wood and Grieve to create an adaptable and flexible new workplace environment to accommodate their existing staff requirements and future projected growth, catering for in excess of 230 engineering, administrative and support staff over the 3,000m2 tenancy. We have achieved a density of 13m2 per person whilst delivering vastly improved staff amenities and meeting facilities to support the predominately open plan workstation based disciplines. The brief was to unite all engineering disciplines and support, and to promote visual connectivity and communication. Wood and Grieve encourage a culture of transparency and dynamic collaboration throughout the organisation whilst fostering a strong social network. Woodhead have created the ‘kit of parts’ to enable and support this fundamental aspect of Wood and Grieve culture. The challenge with the multiple level tenancy was to ensure that separation was minimised. To combat this a large dynamic, interactive social space has been developed on the ground floor, anchored directly off reception and connected to the street.

Shell Development Australia Perth, Western Australia In 2008, Woodhead was engaged by Shell Development Australia (SDA) to design and deliver a benchmark office fitout which accommodates local needs within the parameters of a global corporate planning and branding strategy. The resultant Woodhead designed interior fitout occupies levels 1, 2 and 3 of the new 6 Star Green Star Commercial Building at 2 Victoria Avenue, Perth - also designed by Woodhead. The fitout provides open plan workspaces for SDA staff together with numerous flexible meeting rooms. The interiors apply the global Shell Works guidelines, with the Perth office the first project completed in Australia conforming to this document. The design concept of “fossil and view” permeates throughout the floors reinforcing the brand and philosophy of Shell. The SDA provided guidelines prescribing planning principles, maximum floor plate densities as well as work types and settings. Woodhead took these principles and applied them in a generic format across a floor plate to maximise efficient use of space and enhance the operation of SDA’s business. The generic approach to this planning also influenced the design of this project’s aesthetic. Shell Development Australia was previously located in disconnected office tenancies within Perth’s CBD. The design of their new office accommodation grouped SDA’s individual sectors into a homogenous environment between three connected floors.

Standard Chartered Bank Changi Business Park, Singapore Woodhead has completed the interior fitout for the Standard Chartered Banks’ new Changi Business Park premises as part of a company-wide workplace refresh. Standard Chartered @ Changi houses over 2000 non front-line employees in human resources, technology and trade operations. Following an extensive stakeholder and design development process, Woodhead has achieved a new design standard for Standard Chartered, widely acclaimed in terms of sensitivity to internal branding, space planning principles, design principles and addressing agile work practices. The interior design principles reflect Standard Chartered’s own brand and its diverse and inclusive culture by creating workplace environments which enhance communication within and across business units and compel opportunistic meetings. Robust and flexible planning in the configuration of workspaces enhances teamwork and communication, whilst balancing the need for privacy. The space planning is designed against a modular grid enabling ease of reconfiguration, churn and minimal construction wastage.
‘Interchange Hubs’ act as alternative work zones with wireless connectivity to support informal working, collaborative/chance interactions across departments and encourages a sense of open culture. Floors are themed Asia, Middle East and Africa in line with the geographic areas of the bank’s operations. CIMB Bank KL Sentral, Kuala Lumpur Woodhead was appointed as Interior Design Consultants for CIMB Bank’s prestigious new headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. CIMB Bank is the largest bank in Malaysia and is part of the CIMB Group which operates across ASEAN under several corporate entities which also include CIMB Investment Bank, CIMB Islamic, CIMB Niaga, CIMB Securities and CIMB Thai. The Group has a presence in 14 markets around the globe, with its main markets of Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand primarily focusing on Consumer Banking, Corporate & Institutional Banking and Markets and Group Asset Management & Insurance. The project comprises some 46,000m2 of Grade A multifunctional corporate office space, over 22 levels of the 34-storey office building to be known as Menara CIMB, located in the prime CBD area of KL Sentral, Kuala Lumpur. Woodhead’s scope will cover three highly visible areas that are important touch points for CIMB’s brand: The VIP areas for the C-Suite floors. − Including new ‘Leadership Community-style’ working, a new workplace initiative for the bank, which is designed to transform its organisational culture. The central Work Café and adjoining lounge provides a unique meeting environment within the office. This space is the heart of the design, offering gathering space for large group meetings or formal assembly, or to celebrate the successes of the organisation. This space facilitates increased contact and knowledge sharing throughout the LMC office building a strong workplace culture. The workplace features an expansive balcony space on level nine. The partially enclosed balcony maximises use through all weather conditions, creating a naturally ventilated all-year-round space to meet and work. Extending from the Work Café, the ‘sunroom’ compliments the suite of collaborative spaces on offer to staff. The façade glazing incorporates integrated photo-voltaic panels and is one of the many aspects of the design which reinforces the Land Management Corporation’s commitment to sustainability. 43

Australian Human Rights Commission Sydney, New South Wales Woodhead was commissioned to design the new workplace for the Australian Human Rights Commission in a newly refurbished building in the Sydney CBD.
The new tenancy is spread over four floors, with one floor dedicated to the public face of the Commission. This floor consolidates the main receptions, Public Meeting Rooms, Public Hearing Rooms and support facilities in an open, welcoming manner. The three other floors accommodate the remainder of the Commission’s Sydney staff and functions to support their role.

Key design principles were set during detailed workshops with the Commission, and formed a set of guiding principles that underpinned all decision making throughout the project. The result is a workplace which demonstrates the Commission’s leadership, enhances collaboration, is innovative and motivational, whilst being educational about human and information rights and responsibilities. Natural timbers in feature areas create a warm, inviting and professional atmosphere, whilst the use of environmental graphics bring the meaning of the Commission to the workplace in a bold way. A connection stair has been designed to breakdown departmental barriers and foster communication and interaction between staff. The move to a more open plan workspace, while initially met with apprehension in the design phase, proved to be an extremely positive change for staff, as this not only facilitated better teamwork, but ensured all staff had access to natural light whilst they worked. 45

Deutsche Bank Mapletree Business City, Singapore In February 2011, Woodhead was appointed by Deutsche Bank to design and fit-out their new back office at Mapletree Business City, with Phase I being 3 floors totalling 3,600m2 connected by an internal staircase to accommodate 280 work positions. The new workplace planning principles mandated by Deutsche Bank calls for a focus on flexibility to respond to changing needs of the business. The goal was to achieve a better quality work environment that better utilises space and integrates technologies, ergonomics and considerations for the environment.

Suncorp Headquarters Evaluation Panel Brisbane, Queensland Woodhead collaborated with Suncorp and Jones Lang LaSalle to evaluate 11 shortlisted developer proposals responding to their 30,000m2 campus headquarters accommodation requirement. Woodhead worked closely with the Suncorp Senior Leadership Team to shape and articulate the project vision and future workplace strategy. Suncorp’s vision was articulated as “One Company, Many Brands, One Team”, which recognised the unique brand propositions the Suncorp Group offer their customers. The new Campus HQ development was seen as an opportunity to deliver the physical and cultural embodiment of the journey Suncorp are undertaking and at the same time looking forward to “brighter futures” and creating “Suncorp - THE place to work.” Our brief was to shape a building that could inherently demonstrate the DNA of the Suncorp brand in an authentic manner to it’s people, customers and shareholders. During extensive workshop sessions with key project stakeholders the following key criteria emerged for the new campus; − Floorplates should be a minimum of 3,000m2 and facilitate vertical and horizontal visual connection. − Floorplates should be as column free as possible to allow flexibility and simple churn reconfigurations. − Large, simple, modular floor plates, linked both horizontally and vertically to allow greater flexibility for growth, change and agility. − Inclusion of connecting bridges, walkways and pathways to link people more visibly, rather than relying on traditional vertical transportation. − Large swages of contiguous floor space, which allows flexible planning and the ability to alter team sizes efficiently.
− Atria should be provided to allow natural light into key central spaces within the building and to enhance visual connectivity in all directions. − Floorplates should be efficient and no less that 87% GFA/NLA, with the ability to accommodate neighbourhoods of between 40100 people. − Support an average population density ratio of 1:10, including support spaces. One of the key development considerations was to foster a learning environment, which was maximised with the provision of a Learning Academy that could be used for a wide variety of associated uses. Suncorp also recognised that the Campus Development was an opportunity to connect with the Queensland public and this was a major consideration of ours when shaping the ground floor entry lobby and tenancy spaces. Sustainability credentials were demonstrated by setting a minimum NABERS Rating of 5 Stars and a 6 Star GBCA Green Star rating under the design criteria for each current applicable rating system. Workplace Design In addition, Woodhead was also selected to take part in limited bid process for the workplace component of the selected new premises. Woodhead presented to Suncorp in Brisbane our strategic approach to Workplace projects, for the new South Bank Campus in Brisbane. Suncorp is a unique, diversified financial services group operating in Australia and New Zealand. With a well-known portfolio of brands, the Suncorp Group is the largest general insurer of Australians by gross written premium, the largest regional bank, and includes a life insurer positioned for growth. Our submission acknowledged that the three critical elements for the project would be of behavioural (people), virtual (technology) and physical environments (property) within the parameters of creating a collaborative and connected workplace, that is flexible and visually stimulating to use. The client brief stated that the new offices should “create a harmonious working environment”. An environment which encourages productivity and morale, encompasses the values of St John Ambulance, and encourage users to enjoy the workspace. The client also required the design solution to be a contemporary and efficient design. The new design concept capitalises on a more open environment, with greater access to natural light, and further interaction and communications zones. The underlying principle is to promote ‘St John’ from the public areas through to the work spaces. A more corporate design has been developed in the public areas, drawing on the history of the St John service, whilst the staff and student breakout areas have been designed in a more relaxed and familiar manner reminiscent of their participation in outdoor public events.

The design of the 3,400m2 tenancy space over three and a half floors includes open plan workstations, customer and internal meeting rooms, conference and training facilities, breakout spaces and a customer service centre / reception. Extensive client consultation at the beginning of the project via ‘discovery workshops’ established a set of guiding principals that underpinned the planning and design of the project. From this consultation our objective was to create a workplace environment that improved workflow, was an extension of the workplace culture and embedded responsible sustainable design principles. The design concept is based on a contemporary interpretation of Queensland vernacular architecture and redefines ASIC’s Brisbane Brand position as a responsive, outward facing agency. The design maximises access to natural daylight and views whilst providing screening and privacy to the occupants, creating clearly defined paths of circulation, creating distinct zones for separate functions and

Environmental Management System Woodhead’s Environmental Management System (EMS) aims to reduce the environmental impacts that may result from our operations and from the projects we design. Our EMS has been tailored around our existing ISO 9001 Quality Assurance system, and focuses primarily on actions needed to address our Climate Friendly commitment. We look forward to achieving final EMS ISO 14001:2004 certification shortly.
Green Building Codes As an inaugural and continuing member of the Green Building Council of Australia, Woodhead continue to be actively involved in the creation of Australia’s first Green Star rating tools. In fact we were using similar rating tools on projects even before the creation of the GBCA, and we now support the GBCA in all their endeavours. Woodhead is committed to maintaining Green Star Accredited Professionals within each studio and at leadership level across the group. In addition our team has the knowledge and skills to work with and apply NABERS energy rating requirements and relevant Government and Defence sustainability guidelines.

BIM lessons we have learned − Technology... BIM is a process with efficiencies available through planning of clear workflow practices and procedures. − Modelling may incur more up front costs, yet; − The integrated model can provide a greater level of control all round. − There is value in working with Contractors as Consultants, however not all procurement processes will support this. − Getting the right team is an issue for all projects. With BIM implementation selecting the right team is essential. BIM is only as effective as the most ineffective link. − The level of service is superior to that of traditional service provision and therefore of greater value to the Client. Case Study: Greenskills, Perth, WA Woodhead is commissioned as lead consultant for the design and delivery of the Central Institute of Technology’s Greenskills project in Perth, WA. The new building will provide an innovative learning centre for the development of knowledge in the area of sustainable building design studies. Woodhead are collaborating with the Structural and Building Services Engineers to develop the integrated BIM model, capturing the work of all design team members, to establish and validate the building design, to enable construction documentation production, and to capture future ‘as constructed’ information, maintenance and manual requirements. The appointment includes the provision of full architectural and interior design services and coordination and integration of all sub consultants. The latest technological developments and processes were adopted to inform the move towards fully integrated project delivery.
Quality Certified by Australian Standards Woodhead operates a certified Quality Management System which complies with the requirements of ISO 9001:2008, across Woodhead Studios covered on the Certificate. Renewal: 23 February 2015. Woodhead takes the quality of its services and output seriously. Excellent outcomes for our clients are our goal, achieved by working with a Management System that provides checks and balances to our processes, ensuring consistent success. This mature Management System is certified in five Australian States and Territories, by SAI-Global, to AS/NZS ISO 9001:2008. This includes a Management Manual detailing the company’s approach to policies, objectives, management review, resources, sub-consultant appointment and improvement strategies. Core business processes from Project Initiation through to Completion are described. In addition, a range of system-specific procedures, forms and checklists provide a structure to ensure Woodhead staff work consistently and well. These relate to document and record control, required competencies, client feedback and continuous improvement action through a sophisticated internal audit program. Woodhead has a full-time Group Quality and Risk Systems Manager based in Adelaide, with a Project Delivery team in each Australian office checking the efficient management of quality – both in process and final product - throughout the company. All staff have equal access to quality-related resources over a company-wide Intranet.
