Lauren and P hilip When Philip played baseball in college, he could always count his biggest fan, Lauren. So when the couple began to plan their October wedding, a baseball themed wedding was the perfect fit. The couple entertained their guests in the gorgeous, historic lobby of Minute Maid Park. The ocuple added to the details with a homeplate sign in for guests, a three tiered wedding cake with baseball lace details, and a send-off of guests tossing popcorn.

Sweet Talk
A Q+ A with Megan Edwards, pastry chef and owner of Nutmeg & Co.
By: Candice Fitzgerald
Here at Woodlands Bride, we never pass up a slice of wedding cake – and we never pass on a good feature story. Let us introduce you to a small business with a big portfolio. Brides, you will want to sample this one! We chatted it up with Megan Edwards, pastry chef and owner of Nutmeg & Co., to find out what inspires her, what she offers brides and what’s on the menu at Nutmeg & Co. (hint: nearly everything your sweet tooth desires.) What started out as a nickname her friends gave her because of her love for baking has become a passionate business and a hobby Megan says she never tires of! WB: How did you get started as a pastry chef ? Nutmeg&Co: I attended culinary school right out of high school and worked in several restaurants. I started my business in 2006 and have not stopped baking since! I had a brief sabbatical as a corporate pastry chef with a
big company, but I am glad to be returning to my business and for the opportunity to work with brides! WB: Since you serve the wedding industry, what should brides know about your business? Nutmeg&Co: We are completely committed to making the cake designing part of their wedding planning an enjoyable experience. Once we sit down with each bride for a tasting and get a better idea of what they are looking for, design and flavor wise, we piece together sketches to narrow down the exact design they have in mind. Normally the only time a bride will ever have to meet with us is once for the tasting, everything else is done via email. This saves time for our brides and does not force them to make a decision in one day. Our cake flavor menu has nearly fifty flavors on it, including cheesecakes and Bavarian cheesecakes, and we include the option to make each tier of your wedding or groom's cake a different flavor.
We believe that the inside is equally important as the outside and that your guests should leave remembering how delicious the cake was! WB: What’s on the menu at Nutmeg & Co.? Nutmeg&Co: We specialize in custom cakes for all occasions, in addition to petite fours, cupcakes, custom sugar cookies, and miniature desserts. All of our pastries and cakes are made completely from scratch, with real butter; and while our menus and flavor ideas are vast, we are open to any ideas that each client brings to us! Many of our popular flavors are combinations conjured up by brides themselves. We have also been known to provide cobblers, puddings, and pies for the grooms who opt to not have a groom's cake. An elegant approach is taken with each custom order, so that no matter what your ideas are, they will come to life and impress your guests.
WB: Which flavor cake is your personal favorite? Nutmeg & Co.: To be honest the reason there are so many flavors on our menu is because I don't discriminate when it comes to cake...and I don't ever tire of it! In the realm of chocolate, I would pick our Chocolate Mocha, and in the realm of non-chocolate, definitely Italian Cream. It's hard to put the fork down on either one of those! WB: Sweet! And now my mouth is watering! So, we must know – what inspires you and your business? Nutmeg&Co: I have always loved to bake, from a very young age, and I love being able to turn something yummy into something beautiful that people remember. Weddings are particularly special because brides want to create a very unique 'work of art' displayed for their guests, and the ability to make their vision come to life is so satisfying! WB: Do you have any advice for couples who may have just gotten engaged over the holidays and are starting the wedding planning? Nutmeg & Co.: They may feel like they have a million things to do and don't know where to get started, but when the time comes to think about the cake, I suggest to carve out time at least 2-3 months in advance of your decided upon wedding date. The cake tasting part should be the most fun which is why even most grooms tend to make time to show up for this part of the wedding planning! When it comes to cake, I always advise that a bride's best bet is to peruse the Internet for design ideas. We can take a pile of pictures and turn them into a sketch of the cake of her dreams! WB: What is a fun fact about you that you would like to share with readers? Nutmeg & Co.: People are always asking me if I'm sick of cake, and I don't think that will ever happen! I never get tired of cake - or sweets for that matter. WB: What is the best way for brides to contact you? Nutmeg&Co: Telephone or email; either way, we can get them set up for a consultation.
