WELCOME ANDREW GRIERSON

Dear Readers, As the 2018/19 racing season draws to an end we anticipate another great day of racing at the 12th running of the Harness Jewels next week. It is set to be a great day of racing at Addington Raceway, and will also play a big part in deciding who will take out their age group categories at the upcoming annual awards in the coming months. Woodlands Stud are excited to be connected to seven runners across the day who were bred and raised at the stud and to have nearly half of the pacers racing on the day sired by our stallions. We are also proud to be sponsoring the 4YO Diamond on the card, which is set to be an even race and a great spectacle. We wish everyone involved in the day on and off the track the very best of luck. Win, loose or draw, it is a privilege to be involved in such a prestigious day of racing.

There’s a lot of focus currently on the glitz and glam side of harness racing as the Harness Jewels fast approach but outside of that one magical race day, it’s generally a bit more low-key around this time of the year. It’s the moment for the battlers, the battlewearied soldiers who line up most weeks in hope of snaring a decent slice of the pie on offer and in doing so give their trainer, their driver and their owners something to cheer about. Look across New Zealand at the moment and you’ll see multiple examples of the very type of horse.

The bread and butter job, who might not be lining up at the big dance, but they’re victories feel like a ruby, diamond or an emerald to their owners. And that’s exactly what five-year-old gelding, The Kaik is all about – or at least it was, until a couple of weeks ago he rocked up at Town Hall, knocked on the door and announced his arrival.

You see Trev, as he’s affectionately known, is better know for his exploits on the annual West Coast circuits, or up the top of the South Island at a place like Blenheim and not so much about mixing with the big guns at Addington Raceway on a Premier night of harness racing. In fact, prior to his win earlier this month, he’d been to Addington on 14 occasions and his best result was a fourth. But when he barnstormed his way home from well back to run down promising types like Dan Fernando, Baltimore

The first foal from unraced Artsplace mare, Marie’s Legend, The Kaik is the only of the mare’s progeny to make it to the track. Between his two previous stables before he joined Bartlett, he’d lined up 34 times for a couple of wins and handful of placings, not bad going considering he raced as a two-year-old against some pretty nice types like Thefixer and More The Better. But since his arrival out at Ashworth’s Beach, he’s lined up 26 times for four wins, seven placings

“HE’S BEEN A GREAT HORSE TO HAVE AROUND THE PLACE - HE’S JUST A REALLY COOL DUDE”

“I think if I said I wasn’t surprised by it I’d be kidding myself,” The Kaik’s trainer, John Bartlett said. “He’d been going good, but everything pointed toward it not really being for him, let alone the fact it was premier night and all that, but in typical Trev fashion he stepped up to the occasion.” Bartlett has had The Kaik in his care at Ashworth’s Beach since September last year – he was given the horse to train to provide a change in scenery and access to beach training by Jonny Cox and Kim Butt who had tried everything they could with the horse. He’d been purchased out of the Cran Dalgety barn, where he began his racing career. Dalgety went to $24,000 to secure him at the Auckland Autumn Weanling and All Age Sale in 2014 when offered by Woodlands Stud. He was the eighth most expensive lot of the day.

and only 10 times been outside of the top five with a few sixth placings making that number up and picked up close to $26,000 a long the way. “It looks pretty good when you break it down like that, he’s been a great horse to have around the place - he’s just a really cool dude,” Bartlett said. “We spend a lot of time with him, especially on the beach but he’s great around the other horses.” While Bartlett’s beach training methods have clearly enhanced the career of the son of Bettor’s Delight, he was quick to deflect praise to both Butt and Cox who had the foresight to see what opportunities beach training might open up. “It’s never easy handing a horse over, but they knew it might be the best thing for him and it’s worked out great.” While the change of scenery certainly played a role in the return to the form for the once embattled pacer, Bartlett thinks that there’s another key aspect to The Kaik’s good fortune – and that’s his love of the ladies.

WOODLANDS WORD // 7

Jack and Givemewhatineed – he wiped out those 14 previous occasions in one beautiful sweep.

“He’s a bit of ladies man, he seems to really respond to the female touch and influence.” And that’s where Butt’s involvement really intensifies. She’s struck up a wonderful combination with the horse and they’ve compiled and impressive record together. “Kim gets him, and he seems to go that little bit better for her, she knows how to drive him and has done a great job with him.”

And while they’ve had fun for the past few months, what lies ahead might be just as exciting with Bartlett setting a plan in place to tackle the country racing in the spring and summer. “He’s got pretty tender feet, so while he goes well on the all-weather, he’s much better on the grass – so at this stage he’ll probably have a couple more starts and then have a bit of a freshen up before we bring him back when the grass tracks start up again.” The goals?

That’s an added bonus for Butt too as she’s a part owner of the gelding.

“That’s the plan at this stage, I think he’s got a lot more up his sleeve.”

WOODLANDS WORD // 8

She’s joined by Auckland’s Graeme Snookes, horseman David White, media personality Richard Bromley, Jordan Simpson, Dylan Wells, Manny Galouzis and the Wanna Be A Kiwi Syndicate who are largely made up of Australian members including Matthew Peden.

“I’d love to get him pinging away from the stand starts and like to think he’d be a nice contender for some of the Country Cups, they run along a bit in those races and with a trip he’ll keep coming at them.

NEWS BETTOR’S DELIGHT’S KIDS KEEP KICKING GOALS Champion stallion Bettor’s Delight’s current two year old crop continued a memorable season thus far with victories in two New Zealand feature races at Addington. In the Sires Stakes final for 2yo colts and geldings his son One Change won a stirring final! One Change remains undefeated in his juvenile season following his latest victory and has earnt over $212,000 thus far this season. He led in a Woodlands sired trifecta on the race, with Flyin Even Bettor (Bettor’s Delight) finishing second and Virgil (Sweet Lou) claiming third spot. The race was won in a New Zealand record for 2yo’s in 1.53.4. In the PGG Wrightson 2yo fillies final, diminutive filly Amazing Dream won the $150,000 sale series final. Pacing a 1.54.9 race she defeated her rivals by 3 ½ lengths and now has $190,000 in the locker. American Ideal continues to be a rich source of winners the length and breath of Australia. Yankee Lincoln won at Ballarat, Ideal Fantasy at Wagga Wagga, American Princess won impressively at Menangle, Prince Potter won on the border at Albury, American Tour at Mildura and Ideal Some Magic continued on his winning way at Bendigo. Pegasus Spur’s daughter I Am Pegasus continued her great form with another victory at Melton, the 3yo filly looks a standout in her peer group in Victoria, other good winners for Pegasus Spur included Pretty Little Lucy at Ballarat and Lukyanova at Cambridge.

A LOOK AT THE HARNESS JEWELS WOODLANDS WORD // 10

The season finale is just a week away and the anticipation is growing. The Harness Jewels has become a highlight of the harness racing calendar and ultimately the season decider of sorts, where the best of the best go head to head against their age-group rivals to try and claim the elusive Harness Jewels title. Woodlands Stud didn’t have a very strong presence at the first few seasons, with Bettor’s Delight’s champion son Highview Tommy being the first winner for one of our stallions in 2008. After that it didn’t take long for the results to start coming in and it has now become a very big day for the stud with not just copious amounts of runners who are sired by Woodlands Stud stallions, but also through the growing amounts of runners who were bred and raised at Woodlands Stud. This season we have the following runners who are associated with Woodlands Stud: - Sweet On Me (2YO Diamond) - Best Western (3YO Diamond) - Smooth Deal (2YO Emerald) - Virgil (2YO Emerald) - Jesse Duke (3YO Emerald) - Double Rocket (3YO Emerald - Henry Hubert (4YO Emerald) The previous winners who have been bred and raised on farm at Woodlands Stud is a pretty impressive list and includes horses such as Dream About Me, Partyon, Another Masterpiece, Spanish Armada and Adore Me.

This season’s event looks to be an exciting one, with some clear favourites in some of the races but also some even and interesting races. Woodlands stallions have sired nearly half of the pacers on the day and we are excited to see what results they can achieve. We have had a look through and found some of the Woodlands Sired runners to keep an eye on during the day:

LULU LE MANS

By Bettor’s Delight The Australian Invite in the 2YO Diamond and the first foal out of the 2013 4YO Diamond winner Elusive Chick.

DOUBLE ROCKET

By American Ideal A good draw of three for this son of American Ideal who was bred and raised at Woodlands Stud before being sold. 10 starts to date for four wins and 2 placings.

ASHLEY LOCAZ

By Bettor’s Delight Won the 2YO Emerald in 2017 and has kept up a good race record since. Could he be the first Woodlands sired runner to win the 4YO Emerald?

ALSO WORTH MENTIONING

By Muscle Hill (out of a Pegasus Spur mare) With manners he is a top chance on the day. The Muscle Hill’s are starting to dominate the 2 and 3YO trotting ranks and this cross looks like it could be a good one. Muscle Hill’s son What The Hill stands at Woodlands Stud and looks to be a great option for trotting breeders wanting the Muscle Hill factor! Woodlands Stud wishes everyone a great day whether you are on course or watching from home, have horses racing or just love harness racing! DOUBLE EXPRESSO PRIOR TO HER FIRST WIN (BY JEMMA ANNE).

The Woodlands stallion roster is ever present in the winner’s circle in Australia. In the current 2018/19 season, our stallion’s progeny is making plenty of noise in the juvenile ranks. As we enter Winter, our boys have dominated the key 2yo features so far. At 21 years old, Bettor’s Delight remains an immovable object! ‘The King’ has so far sired the Group 1 winners of both divisions of the Bathurst Gold Crown and he sired the Australian Pacing Gold winner for the colts and geldings in glamour boy Jilliby Nitro.

WOODLANDS WORD // 14

His great mate American Ideal sired the Group 1 winning Australian Pacing Gold filly’s winner in Pelosi! Sweet Lou has hit his straps in Australia with his first crop with five individual winners from only seven starters! His daughter Double Expresso has claimed six wins in her debut season and close to $100,000 in earnings.

American Ideal, Sweet Lou and Bettor’s Delight currently the leading top three-dollar average sires for the current 2yo pacing season in Australia. They are clearly outperforming their Australian contemporaries! American Ideal is averaging close to $23,000 and Sweet Lou $20,000. Bettor’s Delight is now close to $10,000,000 in earnings in Australia this season and his nearest rival is almost $3,000,000 behind! He is on his way to his eighth consecutive Australian stallion title. The 2019/20 season is now on the horizon and our stallion roster is taking shape once again. In a result driven business, we get results on the track and in the sales ring in Australia. In the other Group 1 of the night, the Sires Stakes 2YO Final he sired six of the runners and was the broodmare sire of four other runners out of a field of 12. His son’s One Change and Flying Even Bettor scored the quinella in the race with the Sweet Lou gelding out of a Bettor’s Delight mare Virgil running third. It is great to see some of the new season sires such as He’s Watching, Sweet Lou and Captaintreacherous starting to step up, and going forward it will be interesting to see if sires such as these can compete with Bettor’s Delight. Only time will tell! Bettor’s Delight is standing for $25,000 + GST in New Zealand and $27,500 inc GST in Australia.

HARNESSLINK UPDATES FROM THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE US

TOP 2YO’S DEBUT 3YO SEASON IN STYLE The top 2YO filly and colt from last season have both made terrific debuts in their 3YO seasons.

teaming of Burke Racing Stable LLC and Weaver Bruscemi LLC, Phil Collura, and J&T Silva- Purnel & Libby.

The world’s fastest two-year-old (1:48.3) and harness racing champion filly of 2018, WarraweeUbeaut, was victorious in her 2019 bow in a division of the $166,480 first preliminary leg of the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes for three-year-old pacing fillies at Harrah’s Philadelphia recently.

Top 2YO colt, Captain Crunch had people asking “What’s he going to do when he gets tighter?” after taking his 2019 debut by an effortless 1¾ lengths in a division of the second preliminary of the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes for three-yearold pacing colts at Mohegan Sun Pocono, negotiating a sloppy track in an amazing 1:49.1, last quarter :26.

The daughter of Sweet Lou won in 1:51.2, equalling the North American season’s record. Driven by Yannick Gingras, “Ubeaut” rolled on in complete control, winning the heat by 1¼ lengths. It was just the kind of start to a potentially historic year that the connections would want for the winner of $688,615, who is trained by Ron Burke for the familiar

The Captaintreacherous colt powering right to the lead and without a race in 145 days, and charged home with the powerhouse :26 blitz. Southwind Ozzi, the second choice, held extremely well in second, a length in front of third choice Proof, who also stayed on nicely after the early usage.

SUPER SUNDAY OF RACING Harrah’s Philadelphia, as the southeast Pennsylvania track hosts its Super Stakes Sunday (Monday NZ/AU Time) of $100,000 Invitationals. The Betsy Ross Pace for mares features ex-pat Kiwi’s Shartin and Eclispe Me and the Commodore Barry Pace features Woodlands bred Pacing Major and also Tiger Thompson. The giant card also has three divisions of the third preliminary leg of the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes for three-yearold pacing colts. The defending champion in this group is also competing at Philly in Sunday: Proof, a winner of $450,000. But Proof is unlikely to be the favorite that honor will

go to Captain Crunch, who was the 2018 freshman colt pace champion. The third race division is topped by Southwind Ozzi, who won a Sire Stake two starts back and then was second behind Captain Crunch in his debut, and Wild Wild Western, a PaSS winner last week. In the seventh race division, you can make a good case for most of the entrants to record their first 2019 Sire Stakes win. With 27 horses who have won in 1:50 or less on the card, plus 30 winners of over $500,000 lifetime, including eight millionaires, the entire Sunday card at Harrah’s Philadelphia is an outstanding one.
