ARRP Driver Safety Course Why take a driver safety course? Because driving has changed since you first got your license. Cars have changed, so have traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads you travel on every day. Some drivers age 50+ have never looked back since they got their first driver’s licenses, but even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills. By taking a driver safety course you’ll learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. You’ll learn how you can manage and accommodate common agerelated changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. A course will be offered in the fall at the Woodridge Park District October 15 and 16 from 9 am-1 pm. Must attend both days to receive certificate. You may be eligible to receive an insurance discount upon completing the course. Consult with your agent for details.

Lights, Camera, Action - Making Your Own Harry Potter™ Movie Camp

NEW! Keyboarding and Coding Kids

What’s the next adventure for Harry Potter, Ron and Hermione? It’s up to you! We will create our own Harry Potter movie using special movie making cameras and software. As directors and producers we will work in teams to create our own story and script, build scenes out of Lego®, use Lego Harry Potter mini figures as characters and film our own movie. We will use graphic editing techniques and stop motion animation, add background noise and music, and show our movie at a private screening on the last day of class. All students will get a copy of their movie on a CD after class is complete. This is a cooperative program with the Lisle Park District.

The technology revolution continues to unfold and the wave of digital learning is a reality. Knowing how to use computers as tools (not just toys) is a key component of core curriculum. Young learners need to know keyboarding, functionality and coding to be ready to embrace their upcoming academic adventures. The expert staff of Smart Starters, Inc. delivers instruction on the tools students need in a dynamic, fun and challenging environment - including knowledge of true keyboarding function keys, safe Internet habits, document building and coding. Students are 1:1 on the provided net book computers. All programs are downloaded, so the student will not be online during class. Weekly progress reports are sent home with students. The children have a blast playing ‘human chess’ on a life size 4’x 4’ chess mat, and participate in a variety of activities, such as songs, crafts, dance, coloring, and creative play. These handson activities expose children to chess concepts and pieces, in order to help them gain a basic understanding of the game. This is a cooperative program with the Lisle Park District.

GOLFGOLF One of Robert Bruce Harris’ first designs, Village Greens of Woodridge has been a staple of Chicagoland golf for over 40 years. Rich in natural wooded beauty, 18 holes of championship golf in a picturesque setting await you. Widely-known as one of the best values for golf in the Chicago area, Village Greens is a challenge worth telling your friends about. The course terrain is hilly and rolling with a variety of mature trees lining each fairway. Water comes into play on a number of holes, and sand bunkers lurk in strategic positions. Undulating greens, large landing areas and multiple tees on all holes create a course of both beauty and playability.

City of Angels took place in Los Angeles, 1940’s. It’s double the laughs and double the intrigue as two plots unfold at once when a young New York writer is brought to Los Angeles to turn his best-selling crime novel into a screenplay. As we follow the writer’s travails in the film industry, where the ‘envy is so thick, you can cut it with the knife lodged in every other back’, the novel’s private-eye comes to life in the evening’s split screen plot. With a dazzling, jazzy score by Cy Coleman and David Zippel and a brilliant book by Larry Gelbart, this musical is played on two stages, ‘only one of which is reel, while the other is only real!’ Lunch is prior to the performance, with a choice of grilled salmon or roasted sirloin of beef. WOODRIDGE PARK DISTRICT 2015 SUMMER ACTIVITY GUIDE

Community Please help us watch the parks!

Co-op Facilities

If you see any suspicious activities in progress at a park site, please alert the Police Department immediately at 911. If vandalism has already occurred, please call the Police Department at (630) 719-4740 and notify the Woodridge Park District at (630) 353-3300.

Woodridge Park District has cooperative agreements with the Darien, Downers Grove, Lisle and Westmont Park Districts to offer cooperative programming at nearby facilities. The Woodridge Park District remains committed to this tradition of cooperation to bring the best possible recreational opportunities to our residents at the lowest possible cost.

The Park District is now sponsoring a program specifically targeting arson prevention through the new Arson Tipster Award Program. The Arson Tipster Program rewards residents for providing information that leads to the arrest of the arson perpetrator or conspirator. All communication between the Woodridge Park District and the Arson Tipster is kept strictly confidential. The Woodridge Park District will not release or disclose any information furnished by the Arson Tipster without the Tipster’s explicit consent and approval. Arson Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward. To provide a tip or get more information about the Arson Tipster Program, contact the Woodridge Park District at (630) 353-3300. Thank you for helping keep our parks safe and clean.

Memorial Tree Program The Woodridge Park District Memorial Tree program provides residents the opportunity to purchase a tree in memory of a loved one or to honor a special occasion. Your participation in the Memorial Tree program will not only provide a lasting memory, but will also help to beautify our parks and trails. In addition to the tree, a bronze plaque is available and may include the name of the tree, year of dedication, name of person the memorial is for and a brief personalized message.   A Park District staff member will assist in locating the site, choosing the tree, and selecting the wording for the plaque. Planting of the tree can be completed in the spring before May 15 or in the fall before October 15. For more information, contact Ryan Bordewick, Planner and Landscape Designer, at (630) 353-3300.

Waterfowl Concerns Regular feeding of waterfowl can cause dependency on people for food, bird and people conflicts, and the spread of disease. Please refrain from feeding the birds at Lake Carleton and Lake Harriet along with other lakes in the area. The waterfowl have become used to handouts and no longer migrate south in the winter. The once wild birds have become tame and have lost their fear of cars and people, which can lead to traffic problems and possible injury. With the growing populations of waterfowl in small concentrated areas, the competition for food is high. The less nutritious handouts and harsh weather increase their susceptibility to life threatening diseases. We ask that you please do not feed the waterfowl. Thank you for your support. For more information, please contact the Woodridge Park District at (630) 353-3300.
