Finance & Personnel Mission Statement The mission of the Woodridge Park District is to enhance one’s quality of life by providing superior parks, facilities, and recreational services in a fiscally responsible and environmentally sustainable manner, in partnership with the community.

Park Board Meetings Regular meetings of the Woodridge Park District Board of Commissioners are held on the second Tuesday of each month. These meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Community Center, 2600 Center Drive. The public is always welcome to express their ideas or opinions on any pertinent matter. The Woodridge Park District strives to comply with the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). If you or any member of your family needs special assistance or accommodations, and plans on attending a Park Board meeting, please call the Administration Office 24 hours in advance of the meeting (630) 353-3300, and accommodations will be provided.

Road Rally Looking for an adventure? If so, you are sure to enjoy the challenge of the 29th Annual Road Rally! Grab your neighbors and friends to create a team of four adults per vehicle. Each group is given a map and a bag of clues, but only teamwork, logic, and luck will keep you on track. Some clues are helpful while others are designed to throw you off course. This exciting, and somewhat physically challenging, four-hour scavenger hunt on wheels will test your mind, body, and teamwork, so put on your thinking caps and start your engines! At the completion of the rally, teams will gather for an awards presentation and socialize at a pizza dinner. This fun-filled event is a cooperative effort of the Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Lisle, Naperville and Woodridge Park Districts, so space is limited. Letters will be e-mailed to each team captain around the second week of April. SPECIAL EVENTS Motion Explosion This unique event combines the Kite Fly and the Touch-A-Truck components into one big MOTION EXPLOSION! Touch-A-Truck will give children the opportunity to explore a fire engine, a police car and other really big, neat vehicles. Children are able to get up close and personal with working vehicles, which may help them learn more about the vehicles and the people who operate them. Participants are encouraged to ride their bike to Cypress Cove, climb on trucks, take pictures, bring a blanket and have a picnic, fly a kite and have fun during this family event. Food items will be available for purchase.

Accuquest Hearing

Active Adult Adventures Newsletter A quarterly newsletter provides Active Adults with information about community services, Woodridge Park District Programs and trips, and the Golden Years Club. This newsletter is mailed free to residents and Golden Years Club Members and at a $5 annual fee to nonresidents. Please call the Woodridge Park District at (630)353-3300 if you are interested in receiving this publication.

WPD Refund Policy A $5 administrative charge will be applied from the amount of the refund for each program, including refunds for medical reasons. No refunds will be given for a trip unless there is a replacement participant or the trip is cancelled. The Woodridge Park District does reserve the right to cancel a program if the enrollment is not sufficient to justify sponsorship of the activity. Participants will receive full refunds for any class or trip that is cancelled by the Park District. Refund processing takes approximately 2 weeks.

Mark your calendar for the third Thursday of the month when Ben Western, Hearing Instrument Dispenser, of Accuquest Hearing will provide a free 20-minute hearing screening. Appointments must be made by Friday by 12:00 p.m. for the following Thursday appointment. If you can’t make it Thursday, feel free to call and set up an appointment at their office at (630) 968-0085. Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) (800) 548-9034

The Illinois Department of Insurance has trained volunteers to provide assistance to aid you in filing Medicare claims and answer your questions regarding health insurance. For further assistance you may call or email DOI.SHIP@illinois.gov.

Cravings Crew Join us for a monthly lunch outing organized by the Woodridge Park District for active adults 50 years old and better. Each month we will travel to a different restaurant to sample a variety of menu options. Exact dates, times, restaurant and menu options are available the first Thursday of each month. Your fee for this program includes: transportation, lunch, soft drink beverages and gratuity. Advance registration is required. Call (630) 353-3300 or stop by the Community Center for details.

Games Galore

Golden Years members…come out and join the fun! Stop in the Community Center once a month for fun and games. Each month will be different games to play. Games will include: trivia, indoor bocce, spelling bees, Wii Bowling and other Wii games, bean bag toss and card games. Exact dates and times will be announed at the Golden Years meeting on the first Thursday of the month. Games Galore is free for Golden Years members.

ACTIVE ADULTS TRANSPORTATION SERVICES Transportation: Ride DuPage Program

For persons 65 years and older Once registered, you have one phone number to call: 1-800-713-7445. For TTY use 1-800-713-7415 PACE call center. Make a reservation up to 7 days in advance between the hours of 6:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. You will be given the cost of your ride at the time you make your reservation, then pay for the ride on the vehicle. The vehicle assigned will be either a Taxi or a Pace bus. The cost for the Ride DuPage transportation will be $2.00 flag fee plus $1.00 for each mile traveled. ARRP Driver Safety Course Why take a driver safety course? Because driving has changed since you first got your license. Cars have changed, so have traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads you travel on every day. Some drivers age 50+ have never looked back since they got their first driver’s licenses, but even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills. By taking a driver safety course you’ll learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. You’ll learn how you can manage and accommodate common agerelated changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. Must attend both days to receive certificate. You may be eligible to receive an insurance discount upon completing the course. Consult with your agent for details. Pilot II Taxi Program

The Village of Woodridge is now offering the Subsidized Taxi Program. Participants must live in the village limits, be at least 60 years of age, or obtain a certified statement from a physician to verify disability. You may purchase coupons in person, by mail or visit the Woodridge Village Hall during regular business hours in person. Coupons cost $3 each and may be used throughout DuPage County. You may purchase up to 12 coupons each month, the coupon value is $5. A maximum of four coupons may be used per ride. RTA Reduced Fare for Seniors If you are age 65 or older and are not enrolled in the Illinois Department on Aging’s Circuit Breaker program, you are eligible for a reduced fare. You must apply at any one of the 200 registration sites in the region. To find a site near you, call 836-7000 from any local area code.

Rules of the Road The Rules of the Road Review Course is designed to give drivers – especially senior citizens and persons with disabilities – the knowledge and confidence needed to renew or obtain a driver’s license. This is a course taught by the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.

ACTIVE ADULTS GOLDEN YEARS Birthday Meetings and Activities

Golden Years Club The Golden Years Club is open to anyone 50 years old or better. Weekly meetings are held on Thursdays from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Community Center. Regular activities include games, guest speakers, birthday parties, stimulating conversation, and much more. Throughout the year there are also special events and activities. There is a $18 annual fee which can be paid at any weekly meeting. Anyone who is interested in trying out the club can attend one meeting without paying. No Golden Years meetings on December 25 and January 1, 2015.

PRESCHOOL Putterbugs Calling all Puterbug Detectives! We need your help in solving missions. As the technology revolution continues to unfold and the new wave of digital learning is quickly becoming a reality, technology education is a new and emerging part of core curriculum. This program teaches young children how to apply today’s technology along with developing skills in keyboarding, creative problem solving, school readiness, core curriculum, and Internet safety. YOUTH Moviemaking 101 - Making Your Own Indiana Jones™ Movie Do you want to be the next Steven Spielberg? We will create our own Indiana Jones™ movie using special movie making cameras and software. ICE SKATING

New this winter, ice skating rinks will be installed at the Orchard Hill Park ball fields. One rink will be designated for family open skate and the other rink will be designated for ice hockey. Additionally, ice skating will also be available at Lake Carleton, pending weather conditions and the safeness of the ice. Six inches of solid ice across the entire lake is considered safe for skating as long as no snow is present. Creative Movement

Dance Kids USA presents a specially designed program to encourage your child in dance, mime, creative movement, music education, ballet, jazz, tap, gymnastics and performance. Exploration Totschool 2015 - 2016 Your child will love our program, which emphasizes the ‘FUN’damentals of learning. Emphasis is placed on the whole development of early childhood learning with focus on cognitive, social-emotional, and physical development. Our curriculum incorporates the kindergarten preparation skills desired by kindergarten teachers of our local school districts. The children will explore everyday subjects through a variety of activities such as math skills, science, reading readiness, shapes, colors, music, art, motor development and free play. Peer group interaction is stressed, as it is essential for children. The Totschool program operates in accordance with most of the School District 68 schedule, and begins in September 2015 and runs through May 2016. For health and sanitary reasons, all participants MUST BE TOILET TRAINED AND OUT OF DIAPERS AND PULL UPS.

Registration Priority registration for those enrolled in the previous year of Totschool will be taken on Monday, April 13, 2015, public registration will begin on Saturday, April 25, 2015 for residents, and nonresident registration will begin on May 4. Full refunds (less $5.00 administration fee) are available through July 31, 2015. Starting August 1, 2015 only a 50% refund will be given if the spot is filled. If the spot is not filled, the enrollment fee will be forfeited. Exploration Adventure Camp Spend those long summer days participating in a variety of outdoor activities including sports, games, nature activities, arts & crafts, canoeing, swimming at Cypress Cove and venturing off on a field trip once a week. Participants will need to bring a sack lunch, beverage, additional snack and swimming items to camp every day.

Exploration KIDZ Squad Before/After School

KIDZ Squad is designed to provide a safe and structured program for children in grades K-6. Participants can take part in a variety of games, arts and crafts projects, have quiet time to do homework and enjoy active play time both indoors and out. KIDZ Squad Before School will be held at the Community Center starting at 7:00 a.m. Transportation to each of the schools will be provided by school buses. KIDZ Squad After School will be held after school until 6:00 p.m. at two locations: Meadowview School for children who attend Goodrich, Willow Creek and Meadowview and Murphy School for children attending Murphy, Edgewood and Sipley Schools. Children will be transported by school buses. A nutritious snack will be provided each day.

Exploration ADULTS Dog Obedience Here’s an opportunity for dog owners to learn how to handle and work with your dog while having fun at the same time. Training methods are motivational using positive reinforcements. The following commands will be taught: name, sit, down, off, walk, drop-it, come, stay and being a vet-friendly dog. Voice, as well as hand signals, will be taught for most commands. Please bring treats (really good ones) with you for your dog and don’t feed them too much before class. The dog will be more motivated to pay attention to you if he is hungry. Equipment needed: A buckle collar, a harness or a head halter -no chokes, prongs or shock collars please. A 6-foot leather or cloth leash no retractable leashes please. Dogs must be at least 4 months of age to attend class. Older dogs also benefit from training, and there is no truth to the saying that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks! Participants may purchase optional standard dog training collars and leads at the first class. Please bring a photocopy of your dog’s vaccination records to the orientation. GARDEN PLOTS Garden plots are provided for those who wish to have a garden but do not have the space. These garden sites are located on the tract of land east of Woodridge Drive and south of 71st Street. The plots will be plowed, rototilled, and sectioned off into 20’ x 30’ areas. Plots are assigned on first come first serve basis. Register in person to pick out a garden plot number. Returning gardeners have until January 5, 2015 to reserve the same spot they had in 2014. After January 5, it will be released to the public. Gardeners will provide their own seeds and equipment and must maintain their plots only. Gardeners must put up a fence around their garden plot. Water is available on site periodically. Hose use is unavailable and not permitted. Please be mindful of others when using the water in the tank. We all must share the water. Shotokan Pre-Karate/Safety

Shotokan Youth Karate/Safety

Young children will develop agility, strength and coordination skills through fun and creative activities. This program, specifically designed to work with growing minds and bodies, enhances memory and agility skills, too. Watch your child blossom while learning karate and having a blast at the same time! Note: Uniforms and Belt Testing are options available through the ISKC instructor.

Karate skills put children in touch with their bodies and helps to build coordination, agility, strength and poise, as well as establishes lasting personal safety skills. The mental aspect of karate is equal to if not greater than the physical. Practicing this art results in increased self-esteem, in addition to enhancing discipline and control. Uniforms and Belt Testing are options available through the ISKC instructor.

Children and adults universally enjoy learning the art of karate. Classes are taught by Illinois Shotokan Karate Club’s expert instructors under the direction of John DiPasquale, four-time National Champion, U.S. Karate National Coach and President of the National Karate Federation of the U.S.

Shotokan Adult Karate

Tae Kwon Do is a Korean Style of combining the hands and feet in a method of unarmed self-defense. Instruction is centered around physical conditioning, a series of patterned movements that develop grace and coordination, and controlled sparring and self-defense practice. Black Belt instructors teach proper technique in these areas, monitor all students practice, and provide a structured teaching environment for students of all ages. Tae Kwon Do can bring out a heightened sense of confidence, physical awareness, and well-being in each and every student. All students begin at the rank of white belt. To advance to a higher belt or rank, the student must demonstrate his or her abilities at periodic promotional examinations held at Kim’s Black Belt Academy. PARENT/CHILD NEW! MusicTime This fun-filled class is designed to nurture the growing independence of the 3 through 5 year olds. Activities will include singing, chants and rhymes, listening activities, group dancing, instrument playing, as well as literature and stories to creatively bring to life on xylophones and percussion instruments. Girls in this program will be divided into three leagues. • Instructional (5-7 years old) • Minor (8-10 years old) • Junior (11-14 years old)

These age requirements are as of January 1, 2015. All registered girls are placed on a team. Early bird registration deadline is Tuesday, February 3. GIRLS SOFTBALL SOUTHWEST SUBURBAN LEAGUE

In an effort to provide an alternative to our 8 - 10 game in-house program, we are again offering the opportunity to play in the SWS League. The SWS originated from the fact that while many communities offer in-house programs through all age levels, participation at the older levels might often be too low to make an in-house-program viable. By combining teams from other communities, participants are able to play a full schedule. The Southwest Suburban league plays an 18 - 20 game schedule and games are usually split home and away. Some of the other communities include Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Naperville, Plainfield and Romeoville. The season starts in late April and runs through June. We will be offering 10U, 12U and 14U teams. Those that have played in the SWS previously will receive priority over those that are new to the program if they register by Monday, February 3. YOUTH Youth Fencing Come and learn the basic attacks, defenses, and footwork of sport fencing taught by instructors of the DuPage Fencing Club. In an effort to provide an alternative to our 8 - 10 game in-house program, we are again offering the opportunity to play in the SWS League. The SWS originated from the fact that while many communities offer in-house programs through all age levels, participation at the older levels might often be too low to make an in-house-program viable. By combining teams from other communities, participants are able to play a full schedule. The Southwest Suburban league plays an 18 - 20 game schedule and games are usually split home and away. Some of the other communities include Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Naperville, Plainfield and Romeoville. The season starts in late April and runs through June. We will be offering 10U, 12U and 14U teams. Those that have played in the SWS previously will receive priority over those that are new to the program if they register by Monday, February 3. The plot revolves around motherless Billy, who trades boxing gloves for ballet shoes. Walking Club The benefits of regular exercise are enhanced when you exercise with friends. Our group will travel on the Park District bus each week to local parks in Woodridge and the surrounding area for friendship and fitness. Please dress for the weather. We recommend wearing walking/gym shoes, sunglasses, a hat, applying sunblock and bringing plenty of water. During inclement weather, we will walk indoors at the Downers Grove Park District or at a mall. See page 31 & 34 for program information.

The Gardens at Cantigny beckon you. They tug at your senses, drawing you closer. If you listen carefully, each garden will tell you a story, unfolding with every step. You will feel your body relax as you absorb the landscape and the landscape devours your stress. The hustle of life melts away just a few steps into our 29 acres of flourishing, blooming tranquility. The Formal Gardens Tour showcases the lifecycles of trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals in stunning displays that perform well in a Midwest climate. Touring areas will vary depending on what is currently in bloom and may include the Fountain Garden, Rock and Dryland Gardens, Rose Garden, Octagon Garden and many beds within the Upper and Lower Bur Oak Gardens, as well as a variety of specimen trees along the journey. The tour will depart from the Visitors Center and last approximately one hour. The paths are predominantly accessible with wheelchairs but some areas will have limited access. Following your guided tour, you can continue to enjoy the gardens at your own pace. Lunch includes a choice of strawberry chicken salad: mixed greens, sliced strawberries, goat cheese, candied walnuts tossed with our strawberry balsamic vinaigrette or soup & sandwich: ½ of our country club sandwich made with in-house roasted turkey, ham, thick cut bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise layered together on herb focaccia bread. The Park District is now sponsoring a program specifically targeting arson prevention through the new Arson Tipster Award Program. The Arson Tipster Program rewards residents for providing information that leads to the arrest of the arson perpetrator or conspirator. All communication between the Woodridge Park District and the Arson Tipster is kept strictly confidential. The Woodridge Park District will not release or disclose any information furnished by the Arson Tipster without the Tipsterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s explicit consent and approval. Memorial Tree Program The Woodridge Park District Memorial Tree program provides residents the opportunity to purchase a tree in memory of a loved one or to honor a special occasion. Your participation in the Memorial Tree program will not only provide a lasting memory, but will also help to beautify our parks and trails. In addition to the tree, a bronze plaque is available and may include the name of the tree, year of dedication, name of person the memorial is for and a brief personalized message. â&#x20AC;Ż A Park District staff member will assist in locating the site, choosing the tree, and selecting the wording for the plaque. Waterfowl Concerns Regular feeding of waterfowl can cause dependency on people for food, bird and people conflicts, and the spread of disease. Please refrain from feeding the birds at Lake Carleton and Lake Harriet along with other lakes in the area. The waterfowl have become used to handouts and no longer migrate south in the winter. The once wild birds have become tame and have lost their fear of cars and people, which can lead to traffic problems and possible injury. With the growing populations of waterfowl in small concentrated areas, the competition for food is high. Information Satisfaction Guaranteed and Refund Procedure The Woodridge Park District offers a “Satisfaction Guaranteed” Policy for all of our recreation programs! (Trips, summer day camps, pool passes and one-day events excluded). We are committed to giving the residents of Woodridge quality programs at reasonable prices, and we are prepared to stand behind the programs we offer. If you are not completely satisfied with the program after attending two classes, stop by the Community Center before the third meeting to fill out an “unsatisfied” refund form. We will invite you to repeat a class at no charge, receive a credit toward another program in the session, or receive a full refund (minus $5 administrative charge). No refund will be granted after the third meeting of the program or after 50% of the classes have been held (whichever is earlier) with the exception of a written medical excuse prior to completion of the program. A $5 administrative charge will be deducted from the amount of refund for each program, including refunds for medical reasons. Medical excuses will result in a pro-rated refund based upon the number of classes held prior to the date listed on the physician’s excuse. No refunds will be given for a trip unless there is a replacement participant or the trip is cancelled. The Park District does reserve the right to cancel a program if the enrollment is not sufficient to justify sponsorship of the activity. Participants will receive a phone call and the option of a refund or leaving the balance on their account.We ask for your feedback to help us serve our residents to the best of our ability and to achieve our goal to make this the most cooperative, public accessible park district in the state.

Photography/Videotaping Policy The Woodridge Park District photographs and videotapes participants in its programs, special events or facilities to publicize recreational opportunities. We do not use any identification in our brochures. By registering for a program, participants and parents/guardians of participants consent to being photographed and videotaped. These photographs and videotapes will be used to promote the Park District through press releases, brochures, the web site and other promotional materials. Please tell the instructor and photographer if you do not want to be photographed.

Behavior Policy Participants are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times. The following guidelines have been developed to help make Park District programs safe and enjoyable for all participants. Additional rules may be developed for particular programs and athletic leagues as deemed necessary by staff. Participants shall:

1. Show respect to all participants and staff, take direction from staff. 2. Refrain from using abusive or foul language. 3. Refrain from causing bodily harm to self, other participants, or staff. 4. Show respect to equipment, supplies and facilities. A positive approach will be used regarding discipline. Staff will periodically review rules with participants during the program session. If inappropriate behavior occurs, prompt resolution will be sought specific to each individual situation. The Park District reserves the right to dismiss a participant whose behavior endangers the safety of himself/ herself or others. Special Note To Parents

The Woodridge Park District provides a safe and stimulating environment for your child’s growth, please help us maintain our high-quality programs. Safety: Please drop off and pick up your child at the classroom door. Age: To enroll in a class, a child must have attained the proper age of the desired class by the first class session. Proof of Age: Proof of age in the form of a birth certificate may be required. If a child is not the appropriate age for a class, he/she will be dropped from the program. Parent & Child Classes: Siblings of the enrolled children may not attend class.

Rotary Club of Woodridge Program Assistance Plan The Rotary Club of Woodridge acknowledges the need for residents with an economic hardship to enrich their lives through participation in recreation programs. To ensure equal access to recreation programs throughout the Woodridge Park District, the Rotary Club of Woodridge will provide funding assistance/scholarships for District residents in financial need subject to available and fiscal year appropriations. Assistance may be in the form of a payment plans whereby the cost of the program will be spread over a period of time to allow the family/ individual to afford the program as determined by the District or may be a partial scholarship whereby the cost of the program will be reduced according to the guidelines and the difference reimbursed by the Rotary Club. Applications are available at the Woodridge Park District Community Center. Applications will be considered for approval within 3 working days of submission and are completely confidential. Residents using the Program Assistance Plan will follow normal registration procedures. For more information, please go to the Community Center and pick up an application.
