Woodridge Park District Activity Guide - Summer 2018

SUMMER 2018

A letter from the President, Glad we all survived another Woodridge winter! It’s important to point out that this past winter was not a typical winter season. Woodridge residents participated in more recreation, athletic, fitness and wellness programs this winter than ever before because of the opening of the Athletic Recreation Center (ARC). With the ARC opening, the District achieved a milestone goal to enhance and expand year-round recreational, sport, fitness, and wellness opportunities for its residents. To further expand these opportunities and balance the demands to accommodate more open gym play time, new recreational program offerings, sports leagues & tournament play, and after school & summer camp programs, a new Multi-Activity Court (MAC) gymnasium addition was constructed at the ARC. The Board of Park Commissioners cut the ceremonial ribbon on March 13, 2018 for the opening of the MAC gym, which was funded from the proceeds of a $2.5MM Park and Recreation Facility Construction (PARC) grant. Though the successful completion of the ARC project is a major achievement, the Park District continues to take a birds-eye view approach to continually improve your Park District by striving to achieve our mission statement, “To enhance one’s quality of life by providing superior parks, facilities, and recreational services in a fiscally responsible and environmentally sustainable manner, in partnership with the community. “ One of the key phrases in the mission statement is “….in partnership with the community.” Being responsive to our residents needs is a strategic goal and therefore we strive to gather feedback from all residents. To that end, the Park District recently delivered a community recreation survey to over 5,500 households to gather feedback from residents regarding their household’s satisfaction of Woodridge parks, facilities, programs and services, as well as identify future needs. The statistically valid survey results are posted on www.woodridgeparks.org under the “About” and “Survey” tabs. In summary, 75% of household respondents indicated they were very satisfied to satisfied with the overall value their household receives from the parks, pathways, sports, indoor and outdoor recreation facilities, classes, and programs provided by the Woodridge Park District. This is an increase in satisfaction from the 2009 community survey, which was at 69%. The valuable survey data will be used in conjunction with the other feedback methods to provide strategic direction for the District to meet the ongoing recreational and park needs and demands of residents for the next several years. Those initiatives will be incorporated into a new five-year strategic master plan with a focus on recreation services and capital improvements. One doesn’t have to wait for the new five-year strategic master plan to be completed and approved to see immediate progress. Following are a few major highlights planned for this upcoming season: Aquatics: A new PVC pool liner system is currently being installed at Cypress Cove Family Aquatic Park in time for the 2018 swimming season. The new state-of-the-art, non-abrasive, slip resistant, felt lined, PVC pool surface membrane will be installed in the Main Pool, Lazy River, Plunge Pool and Program Pool to improve overall swimmer comfort and safety. Golf Course: A bunker renovation project is being planned throughout the course to meet golfer demands for an improved player experience. Cart path repairs/additions will be initiated on several holes to fix worn and aged areas as well as provide new path areas for golfers. A new Point of Service (POS)/tee sheet software system serviced by GolfNow will provide better data collection and customer service, improved reliability and reporting, and enhanced marketing capabilities compared to the current POS system. Recreation: Based on resident feedback from the community recreation survey, the Department will be focusing on expanding youth program opportunities to be more convenient for two-parent working households. Planning: Development of a new picnicking park at 83rd Street Park is tentatively scheduled to break ground in fall 2018, planning efforts to finalize a master plan for a new neighborhood park in partnership with residents in the Timbers Edge subdivision is tentatively scheduled to begin in fall 2018, and conceptual plans are being developed and reviewed to potentially construct a new sled hill on the Town Centre property. We hope you will remember to “Take Time for Fun” this summer by joining us in the wide selection of recreation programs, special events, sport leagues, fitness opportunities, parks, ponds/lakes, natural areas and bike paths. Sincerely,

Fred Hohnke, President

AARP Driver Safety Course Why take a driver safety course? Because driving has changed since you first got your license. Cars have changed, so have traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads you travel on every day. Some drivers age 50+ have never looked back since they got their first driver’s licenses, but even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills. By taking a driver safety course you’ll learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. You’ll learn how you can manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. You must attend both days to receive certificate. You may be eligible to receive an insurance discount upon completing the course. Consult with your agent for details. Participants will pay instructor on day of class. Cash or Check made out to AARP. Canasta Canasta is a card game of the rummy family of games believed to be a variant of 500 Rum. It is most commonly played by four in two partnerships with two standard decks of cards. Players attempt to make melds of seven cards of the same rank and “go out” by playing all cards in their hand. LOCATION: COMMUNITY CENTER, WILLOW Day M

Duplicate Bridge This contract bridge game is called duplicate because the same bridge deal (i.e. the specific arrangement of the 52 cards into the four hands) is played at each table and scoring is based on relative performance. In this way, every hand, whether strong or weak, is played in competition with others playing the identical cards, and the element of skill is heightened while that of chance is reduced. GOLF

One of Robert Bruce Harris’ first designs, Village Greens of Woodridge has been a staple of Chicagoland golf for over 40 years. Rich in natural wooded beauty, 18 holes of championship golf in a picturesque setting await you. Widely-known as one of the best values for golf in the Chicago area, Village Greens is a challenge worth telling your friends about. The course terrain is hilly and rolling with a variety of mature trees lining each fairway. Water comes into play on a number of holes, and sand bunkers lurk in strategic positions. Undulating greens, large landing areas and multiple tees on all holes create a course of both beauty and playability.

Co-op Facilities Woodridge Park District has cooperative agreements with the Darien, Downers Grove, Lisle and Westmont Park Districts to offer cooperative programming at nearby facilities. The Woodridge Park District remains committed to this tradition of cooperation to bring the best possible recreational opportunities to our residents at the lowest possible cost.

Memorial Tree Program

» Lisle Park District Community Center 1825 Short Street, Lisle

The Woodridge Park District Memorial Tree program provides residents the opportunity to purchase a tree in memory of a loved one or to honor a special occasion. Your participation in the Memorial Tree program will not only provide a lasting memory, but will also help to beautify our parks and trails. In addition to the tree, a bronze plaque is available and may include the name of the tree, year of dedication, name of person the memorial is for and a brief personalized message. A Park District staff member will assist in locating the site, choosing the tree, and selecting the wording for the plaque. Planting of the tree can be completed in the spring before May 15 or in the fall before October 15. For more information, contact Ryan Bordewick, Planner and Landscape Designer, at (630) 353-3300.

» Lisle Park District Recreation Center 1925 Ohio Street , Lisle » Westmont Park District Community Center 75 E. Richmond Street, Westmont Waterfowl Concerns Regular feeding of waterfowl can cause dependency on people for food, bird and people conflicts, and the spread of disease. Please refrain from feeding the birds at Lake Carleton and Lake Harriet along with other lakes in the area. The waterfowl have become used to handouts and no longer migrate south in the winter. The once wild birds have become tame and have lost their fear of cars and people, which can lead to traffic problems and possible injury. With the growing populations of waterfowl in small concentrated areas, the competition for food is high. The less nutritious handouts and harsh weather increase their susceptibility to life threatening diseases. We ask that you please do not feed the waterfowl. Thank you for your support. For more information, please contact the Woodridge Park District at (630) 353-3300.

Satisfaction Guaranteed and Refund Procedure

Behavior Policy

The Woodridge Park District offers a “Satisfaction Guaranteed” Policy for all of our recreation programs! (Trips, summer day camps, pool passes and one-day events excluded). We are committed to giving the residents of Woodridge quality programs at reasonable prices, and we are prepared to stand behind the programs we offer. If you are not completely satisfied with the program after attending two classes, stop by the Community Center before the third meeting to fill out an “unsatisfied” refund form. We will invite you to repeat a class at no charge, receive a credit toward another program in the session, or receive a full refund (minus $5 administrative charge). No refund will be granted after the third meeting of the program or after 50% of the classes have been held (whichever is earlier) with the exception of a written medical excuse prior to completion of the program. A $5 administrative charge will be deducted from the amount of refund for each program, including refunds for medical reasons. Medical excuses will result in a pro-rated refund based upon the number of classes held prior to the date listed on the physician’s excuse. No refunds will be given for a trip unless there is a replacement participant or the trip is cancelled. The Park District does reserve the right to cancel a program if the enrollment is not sufficient to justify sponsorship of the activity. Participants will receive a phone call and the option of a refund or leaving the balance on their account. We ask for your feedback to help us serve our residents to the best of our ability and to achieve our goal to make this the most cooperative, public accessible park district in the state. Photography/Videotaping Policy The Woodridge Park District photographs and videotapes participants in its programs, special events or facilities to publicize recreational opportunities. We do not use any identification in our brochures. By registering for a program, participants and parents/guardians of participants consent to being photographed and videotaped. These photographs and videotapes will be used to promote the Park District through press releases, brochures, the web site and other promotional materials. Please tell the instructor and photographer if you do not want to be photographed.

Participants/parents/guardians/spectators shall exhibit appropriate behavior at all times. The Park District developed the following guidelines to help make programs safe and enjoyable for all participants. The Park District may develop additional rules for particular programs and athletic leagues as deemed necessary by staff. Participants/parents/guardians/spectators shall: 1. Show respect to all participants, staff, referees, volunteers and spectators; and take direction from staff. 2. Refrain from using abusive or foul language. 3. Refrain from threatening or causing bodily harm to self, other participants, spectators, referees and staff. 4. Respect all equipment, supplies, and facilities. 5. Not possess any weapons Staff will use a positive approach regarding discipline. Staff will periodically review rules with participants during the program session. If inappropriate behavior occurs, prompt resolution will be sought, specific to each individual’s situation. The Agency reserves the right to dismiss a participant from a program or a parent/guardian/spectator from a program area whose behavior is inappropriate or endangers the safety of himself/herself or others. Special Note To Parents The Woodridge Park District provides a safe and stimulating environment for your child’s growth, please help us maintain our high-quality programs. • Safety: Please drop off and pick up your child at the classroom door. • Age: To enroll in a class, a child must have attained the proper age of the desired class by the first class session. • Proof of Age: Proof of age in the form of a birth certificate may be required. If a child is not the appropriate age for a class, he/she will be dropped from the program. • Parent & Child Classes: Siblings of the enrolled children may not attend class. Rotary Club of Woodridge Program Assistance Plan The Rotary Club of Woodridge acknowledges the need for residents with an economic hardship to enrich their lives through participation in recreation programs. To ensure equal access to recreation programs throughout the Woodridge Park District, the Rotary Club of Woodridge will provide funding assistance/scholarships for District residents in financial need subject to available and fiscal year appropriations. Assistance may be in the form of a payment plans whereby the cost of the program will be spread over a period of time to allow the family/individual to afford the program as determined by the District or may be a partial scholarship whereby the cost of the program will be reduced according to the guidelines and the difference reimbursed by the Rotary Club. Applications are available at the Woodridge Park District Community Center. Applications will be considered for approval within 5 working days of submission and are completely confidential. Residents using the Program Assistance Plan will follow normal registration procedures. For more information, please go to the Community Center and pick up an application. Participants must reside within the boundaries of the Woodridge Park District to be eligible.
