Next Steps
With these design and policy recommendations in mind, the WWS team has identified the following as next steps that can be taken by AMA officials and 100RC staff to ground the successful implementation of the aforementioned recommendations. The team also indicates areas for which further study is necessary to understand the nature of traffic and livelihood challenges in Accra. 100RC and the AMA should take the following steps to implement the recommendations indicated above.
1. Follow up with ideas generated by the Co-Lab: particularly those that align with the
WWS team’s recommendations. Assess the current status of each idea and identify key stakeholders necessary to sustain progress.
2. Deepen engagement with vendor support organizations and vending communities to identify vendor representatives who can engage in dialogue with the AMA.
3. With respect to the design interventions, create a project team or a point person under the AMA to coordinate the approval, feasibility, and completion of the suggested changes.
100RC and the AMA should commission or conduct the following research to better understand transportation and livelihood challenges in Accra:
Future Research
1. Apply the methodology used in this report to conduct a wider scale study of traffic flows, pedestrian flows, and pedestrian behaviors throughout Accra.
2. Conduct a similar city-wide study of vendor behaviors and needs.
3. Quantify the economic importance of vendors in Accra’s formal economy and study economic vulnerabilities and consumption patterns of vendors.
4. Explore barriers to traffic law compliance and enforcement throughout Accra.
