competitive gymnasts

Each week Woodward is home to many beginner gymnasts. Our instructors teach skills progressing in difficulty on each event in order to ensure that campers are learning the necessary fundamentals before moving on to more advanced skills. When campers are ready to move to the next level, they will do so confidently and successfully.

Many high school gymnasts specialize on one or two events. Our philosophy at Woodward is to provide some exposure to all Olympic events during 2½ hours a day of structured class time. An additional 4½ hours of open workout time is available every day for specialized training with an instructor.

Competitive gymnasts are challenged within the limits of their individual ability. Emphasis is placed on skill development. Our staff members include college and private club coaches, judges (all levels), and college and Olympic gymnasts, all of whom provide our competitive gymnast campers with insight into their athletic development.

woodward’s youth camp

Woodward developed a Youth Camp to assist younger campers aged 7 to 9 in adjusting to camp life. Youth campers have the same schedule, workout opportunities and use of facilities as our general camp. They do, however, live apart from older campers with a “mini mom” (girls) or a “mini dad” (boys) and have an earlier bedtime (9:30pm). All campers age 9 years and under are required to live in the Youth Camp, however older friends may request to stay with them.

Campers were selected from the Gymnastics, Cheer and Tumbling programs. Over 175 campers and staff took us up on the offer and came back for an awesome week of camp! Look for us to continue the TAP program for many years to come. Maybe this will be your year!

Dear Woodward Camp, I would like to thank you for running a top notch facility, a program that sets the standard by which all other camps will try and follow. My daughter had a great experience. She truly loves the sport of gymnastics and your camp is a gymnast’s dream come true, the sport’s best instructors at a world class training facility. The heated pool and canteen don’t hurt either! I know she will return home with tons of new skills, improved confidence and priceless memories. — A grateful parent.

Dear Woodward, I am writing to thank you and Woodward Camp for inviting my children back for week 11. Conrad and Courtney returned home last night and showed us their congratulations letters from your TAP program. They are very happy that they were offered the opportunity to return this summer. They had an amazing week of training, taking full advantage of the open gym sessions everyday and meeting new friends who share their enthusiasm for gymnastics. They are particularly impressed by the coaches who not only helped them with skills but also shared their knowledge about the sport and physiology. Thank you and congratulations on another year of success at Woodward. — Warm regards, Tammy

letters Dear Woodward Staff, I just wanted to say thanks for all the hard work you guys put in. I attended your gymnastics program last year and I really enjoyed it. I had a lot of fun and learned skills that I desperately needed at the same time. You guys find a way of mixing fun and learning together. I competed my first year of high school gymnastics and did great thanks to your coaching and help. I liked it so much that I will be attending again this year. I hope that I get even better. You all really encouraged me to keep going and I guess I could never thank you enough. Thank you for everything, — Brooke

By the very nature of the activities, Gymnastics, Cheer, Tumbling, Trampoline, Inline Skating, Skateboarding, BMX Freestyle, BMX Racing, and Snowboarding, all carry with it the risk of physical injury. No matter how careful the participants and instructors are, no matter how many spotters are used, no matter what height is used, no matter what safety equipment is worn or used, no matter what surface is being ridden, or what landing surface exists, risk cannot be eliminated. Risk can be reduced but never eliminated. The risk of injury includes minor injuries such as bruises and more serious injuries such as broken bones, dislocations, and muscle pulls. The risk also includes catastrophic injuries such as permanent paralysis or even death from landings or falls on the back, neck, or head.
