Welcome to Woopi News...

Hi everyone, Woohoo, we made it!

I didn’t think we were going to get this issue out due to a number of circumstances beyond our control, but here it is. We are so happy to bring it to you.

This month, we celebrate Woopi Brewery’s third Birthday! Our front page photo gives you an indication of its popularity. You can read inside how they are planning to celebrate this anniversary.

We have a serious staff photo inside, but we thought you might enjoy this silly one!

Wait till you read the story about the lorikeet stuck in the helicopter. Don’t worry, Fire and Rescue were onto it. We also cover the reopening of Pollack Esplanade with the new Whale Trail. It may not be what we originally wanted, but it is certainly an improvement and a lot safer than it was. The viewing platform will be amazing. The grand opening will be on August 7, and it would be great if we could all attend and give everyone involved in making this happen a big thank you.

If you’ve been wondering what that slab of concrete is opposite the pedestrian crossing at Queen Street, then this issue solves that puzzle. We’ve news on the Trek4Kids with

Neil and Andrea Currall, the latest exhibition at Woolgoolga Gallery and an excellent interview with Robert ‘Wally’ Watkin and the guys from FreshFM.

We have a local government election looming and we have started introducing you to some of the candidates. Stay tuned next month for a whole lot more. The Election is on September 14, so you have a few more weeks to make your decision.

We’ve lots of photos in this issue. Over the years of publishing Woopi News, the out-and-about photos that Wally and I take have always been very popular. We’d love to keep these going each month (which means we have to keep going out to all the fun places –it’s a job!), but if you have a photo you would like to share of one of your family or friends, please send it through. Make sure it’s high-res, and we will try to include it.

We particularly love this one of the lovely Nicole McKay. You will struggle to find a nicer person than Nicole in Woolgoolga. She certainly is one of the people who make Woopi Woopi.

A big thank you to our new back page advertisers Cellarbrations Woolgoolga. Curryfest is just around the corner. September 28 to be precise, so mark your diaries for that one.

Don’t forget you can always read Woopi News online via our website or keep up to date via either our Instagram and Facebook pages or our Woolgoolga and the Northern Beaches What’s Happening Facebook group. ~ Until next month, cheers - Lisa

Don’t forget to tell ’em “You saw them in Woopi News!”

Peter Ryan - RIP

Last month Woopi News and many in the Woolgoolga Community were devastated by the passing of one of our favourites, Peter Ryan.

Apart from being a good mate, Pete often wrote interesting articles for Woopi News about the whale migration past Woolgoolga Headland. He was also our distribution guy, dropping off our magazines to businesses, cafés and shops every month.

Pete was a member of the Fluro Friday Tribe and would always be there to help with any community work. He would help with the yearly Surfboard and Street Art installations, erect the annual Christmas Flags, and volunteer for the Disabled Surfers Association and for Brainwaves - Fluro Friday’s surfing for mental health program. He was a founding member of the EBB Men’s gym program and attended regularly.

He was an all-round good guy who, every winter, spent hours on the headland watching whales and sharing his knowledge and theories with locals and tourists alike, leaving everyone feeling welcome and included.

He loved a coffee and shared his passion with every café he could, chatting with staff and regulars. He always had time for a pat and a discussion with any dog owner passing by.

Pete will be sadly missed by his beautiful and heartbroken partner Robyn and his family, Maree, Laura and Emma, Kim and Bill, Michael and Natalie, Lachlan, Jessica and Isabelle.

He will also be missed endlessly by the Fluro Friday Tribe and his many friends in Woolgoolga, which he happily and proudly called home.

507 to the Rescue

Local Fire and Rescue NSW Station 507 Woolgoolga Goes Above and Beyond to Rescue Trapped Bird

In a heartwarming display of dedication, the crew at Fire and Rescue NSW Station 507 Woolgoolga recently responded to a unique call for assistance. The team was called upon to aid WIRES with reports of a bird trapped inside the helicopter outside the local Diggers Club RSL. This unusual request prompted the crew to spring into action, showcasing their readiness for any situation.

With careful precision, the crew gained entry to the helicopter to free the trapped bird. Their efforts ensured that the bird was safely released to a local WIRES volunteer. The team also took proactive measures by sealing the suspected point of entry to prevent future incidents or nesting. The successful rescue mission was met with appreciation from the local community and WIRES volunteers. Reflecting on the event, the crew described it as a “once-in-a-lifetime job” and celebrated the positive outcome for all involved.

audio commentary to guide you on an inner-city green escape,” City of Coffs Harbour General Manager Natalia Cowley said.

With an interactive map and trip planner, the app highlights places to visit, eat, stay, and enjoy, including galleries and major tourist attractions.

That’s where ours is going, It will be available for everyone to use 24/7.

The development of the Coffs Coast Explorer app is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments in association with the City of Coffs Harbour.

Welcome to the Whale Trail Official Opening

New Whale Trail ready to be enjoyed Woolgoolga’s renowned humpback highway is in full swing, and soon both locals and visitors will have a prime vantage point to enjoy the spectacle. The City of Coffs Harbour’s eagerly awaited Whale Trail will officially open with public celebrations at 10:30am on Wednesday, August 7, near the Surf Club. All are welcome.

The $1.1 million enhanced pathway offers breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean and coastline, promising to inspire awe and excitement among all who visit.

“This is the piece that completes a visually stunning jigsaw. The Whale Trail will connect Woolgoolga Beach Reserve with the Solitary Islands Coastal Walk,” said City of Coffs Harbour Mayor Paul Amos. “It’s a project that will add another wow factor to Woopi, one of the most coveted locations on the East Coast.”

The Whale Trail includes a 1.8-metre-wide concrete footpath, elevated boardwalks, car parking, kerbing, seating, and lookouts. Additional features include increased formal parking, enhancing the safety of the corner of Carrington Street and Pollack Esplanade for both pedestrians and road users, ensuring a secure and enjoyable experience for all.

City Infrastructure Director Andrew Beswick highlighted the project’s challenges and the community’s crucial role

in its success: “The natural features of the headland have made this a challenging project, but the best possible result has been achieved after extensive consultation with the community. As well as being a win for residents, the Whale Trail will be a must-do experience for tourists—a place to enjoy fresh fish and chips, million-dollar views, and the chance to watch the many whales that pass by each year.”

The Whale Trail project has been funded by the City of Coffs Harbour and a Federal Government grant.

The 2024 Trek4Kids Panorama to Port

It’s Not Just a Journey; It’s a Mission

Trek4Kidz was initiated in 1997 by a group of individuals from Tuross Head on the far south coast of NSW. Driven by a collective enthusiasm for traversing Australia and making a meaningful impact on the lives of seriously ill children, the annual weeklong event has since become a symbol of compassion and camaraderie. During the event, participants embark on a unique journey, exploring different regional areas of the Australian countryside by car. What sets Trek4Kidz apart is its commitment to donating 100% of the funds raised directly to the Starlight Children’s Foundation. While most treks allocate a portion of donations to cover administration costs, Trek4Kidz operates differently. Each trekker contributes an annual fee, covering the expenses of accommodation, meals, and administrative necessities.

The upcoming Trek4Kidz, which will commence in Bathurst on Saturday, August 24, promises an exhilarating journey through towns such as Parkes, Narrabri, Tamworth, Guyra, Tenterfield, Jackadgery, Coffs Harbour, Taylors Arm, and Port Macquarie. Embracing

the spirit of adventure, the Trek aims to seek as many unsealed roads as possible along the way.

Sandy Beach’s Neil Currall has participated in the Trek for the past 18 years and, along with his daughter Andrea, has taken on the official role of sweep for the last 15 years.

The sweep’s role is to account for all entrants, ensuring their safety in getting them out on time, making sure they hit the checkpoints, and potentially assisting in getting their car back up and running and making sure they arrive in town at the end of the day.

Neil is also a member of the Woolgoolga Lions and uses his contacts within the Lions who assist with various donations and catering throughout the year.

Since its inception, the Trek has left a remarkable trail, visiting over 494 towns, 58 schools, and raising an impressive sum of over $2,764,965 for the Starlight Children’s Foundation. These funds are pivotal in enabling the foundation to bring joy to sick children in hospitals when they need it the most.

For those seeking to get involved, Trek4Kidz is on the lookout for individuals with a well-developed sense of humour, a passion for exploration, and an eagerness to make a difference. The ability to listen and follow instructions is also valued, alongside the ownership of a fourwheel vehicle of any age — the more unique, the better.

The Trek4Kidz initiative seeks support in breaking last year’s record donation of $228,000. Donations can be made

via the provided bank account details, and a tax invoice can be arranged before making a contribution. Additionally, donating items for auction, especially promotional merchandise, can significantly contribute to the cause.

Meet Simmo Braun

Aussie Dad Embarks on Year-Long Journey to Support Blood Donations

Simmo Braun, an adventurous Australian dad, is gearing up for a monumental mission to support Australian Red Cross Lifeblood in their critical need for blood and plasma donations. His incredible journey will see him and his three children traveling across Australia to raise awareness and drive engagement on the importance of blood donations. The mission is not just about ticking off locations on a map; it’s about making a real impact on the lives of recipients, their families, and the communities they serve. Simmo will be donating plasma every two weeks while encouraging others to join the cause at each of the 78 Lifeblood Donor Centres across the country. The goal? To save 100,000 lives and elevate the wellbeing of recipients, families and donors. Simmo’s children, Lennox, Henley and Emerson, will be an integral part of the journey, gaining invaluable life lessons about serving the community, courage and pursuing dreams. They’ll be accompanied by a team of ‘Bloody Good Mates’ to ensure their wellbeing and the success of the mission. To support this noble cause, Aussies are encouraged to join the tour, donate blood, and become Bloody Good Advocates by spreading the word on social media and through their networks. Additionally, businesses are invited to become Bloody Good Sponsors, contributing financial support to ensure the success of the mission.

Simmo will be attending Coffs Harbour Blood Donor Centre on August 8 on his way up to Cairns, the first leg of this bloody good campaign. He is eager to engage with individuals and organisations who value community, family, wellbeing, and adventure, to set up workshops, interviews, events and promotions to connect with the public on this worthy cause. If you are interested in joining the tour, becoming a sponsor, or contributing in any way, you can reach out to Simmo directly for more information. www.thebloodygoodtour.com.au

Fresh FM 87.6 Woolgoolga’s Own Radio Station

Local identity, photographer, and Woopi News correspondent, Robert ‘Wally’ Watkins met up with Michael and Rob from 87.6 FRESH FM and, as an avid listener, asked a few questions about how the radio station is going and what is in the near future for this community service.

Q1 Hey guys, can you tell us a bit about Fresh FM?

Surprisingly, Fresh FM has existed for over 20 years and is unknown by a wide section of the community. In the last few years, the station has been restructured to ensure that all genres and social demographics are catered for. From Classical to Ambient to Hard Rock and Pop. It’s no secret that we broadcast the artists that are the best of the best.

Q2 So Michael, how does Fresh FM work?

We are not for profit radio station, and even though we aren’t recognised as a Community Radio service, that is all the station strives to be. We are limited by our licensing on how powerful our broadcast can be, and this is why our signal isn’t heard across the

Beachside Beauty

entire Woolgoolga area, yet through several apps and internet services we are available 24/7 globally on www.fm876.com.au

Q3 Rob, can you tell me about your listener base?

Aside from our ever faithful locals we have regular listeners in Denmark, Canada, USA, Iran, India and all around Australia.

Q4 Michael, you are known for the promotion of Australian artists, that must be a boon for them?

Even though we are a smalltown radio station, we are probably the nation’s leader in promoting Australian independent artists. Each week, we are sent between 20 and 30 new releases from various artists, publicists, and promoters. The bulk of these are Australian and there is some great music coming out of this country as well as overseas. All these tunes can be heard in our New Releases program every Monday from 1pm till 4pm and repeated at the same time on Fridays. We have received some great music of late from locals, including Nathan Berretta, Mitch Burgess, Unison, The Orlandos, Temperate and so many others who have sent

Q5 How are you funded Rob?

I’m aware that you personally have procured local support. All our funding comes from

sponsorship. We are grateful for our ongoing sponsors: Woolgoolga Real Estate, Diggerbox Excavations and Exterior Solutions (painting and rendering). Neil ‘Ebor’ Welsh – RIP

Neil (Ebor) Welsh was born in Grafton, on February 9, 1938, the fourth of six children to David ‘Nip’ and Mary Esther Welsh. His siblings, Betty, Ray, Margaret, Hilton and Robert, shared their early years in a modest two-bedroom house in Ryan Street, South Grafton. Despite the small space, even housing Esther’s sister Vi and her family at times, it was a home filled with childhood joy. Neil’s tales of billycart races and cricket matches with lifelong friends on South Hill paint a picture of an innocent time in Australian history.

About DFM

With over 30 years of experience, DFM Financial Group Accountants specialise in all business and personal taxation services.

In 1950, Nip and Esther built a new home on Kelly Street, South Grafton, where they raised their growing family. Neil attended South Grafton Primary School and Grafton High School, where he excelled in sports, particularly cricket as a spin bowler. Despite his father’s hopes for a cricket career, Neil chose surf boats, a decision that led to some initial disappointment.

After leaving school at 14, Neil worked with his father in the bush at Clouds Creek. His stories from those days include accounts of the tough men he worked with and the memorable night he woke to find a large black snake on his legs. It was during his time in the bush that Neil met Patricia Schuhmacher. They reconnected at a mutual friend’s birthday party and began a relationship, eventually realising they had first met years earlier at a dance in Woolgoolga.

Neil and Pat married in 1961 at St Matthews Church, South Grafton. They welcomed their daughters Vickie, Lyn and Janelle over the next

few years, moving to a newly built house on Kelly Street where they lived until their children grew up. Neil’s encouragement for his daughters to pursue their interests was ahead of its time, with Lyn and Janelle joining surf clubs and Vickie taking up surfboard riding.

Neil worked as a bulldozer driver for J Notaras & Sons from 1963 until his retirement in 1994 due to health issues. The family enjoyed beach holidays, particularly in Woolgoolga, following Neil to various surf carnivals. Neil mistakenly joined the Woolgoolga Surf Club instead of Yamba Surf Club at 17, a decision that led to many great friendships and happy times.

Pat supported Neil’s surf club activities, often managing the children during events. In winter, Neil supported Pat’s hockey activities, even managing to host parties despite occasional kitchen mishaps, such as the memorable caramel explosion.

After retirement, Neil and Pat moved to Red Rock in 1993, where they enjoyed

time with their grandchildren Melissa, Scott, Andrew, Isaac, Toby, Connor, Michael, Shelly, Alex, Angela, Nicole and Samantha.

Neil was an avid fisherman, keen photographer and voracious reader, passing his love of books to his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed ten-pin bowling, lawn bowls and knitting jumpers on wet days.

Neil’s love for his pets, particularly his cats, and his political discussions were well known.

His sense of humour and love for movies from Shrek to John Wayne westerns brought joy to his family.

In his final years, Neil faced serious health issues with bravery and acceptance. His primary concern was for Pat, asking his family to support her after his passing. Neil’s advice, “It doesn’t matter what you choose to do in life, just strive to be the best at it,” reflects his approach to life. He believed in the importance of beer o’clock, which his family fondly remembers.

Neil is survived by his beloved wife Pat, daughters Vickie, Lyn and Janelle, grandchildren, great-grandchildren Willow, Chase, Declan, Hugo, Annalise, Sophie and Jackson, and his cat Jess. His enduring love, humour and wisdom will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.

A Tribute to Ebor’s Surfing Legacy

Neil ‘Ebor’ Welsh’s life was deeply intertwined with the sea and the surf life-saving community of Woolgoolga

Here are some highlights of his remarkable journey:

1958 Season: Ebor joined the Woolgoolga Surf Life Saving Club

January 3, 1959: He earned his bronze medallion.

Early Days: Clem Unwin, a close friend, obtained his bronze six weeks later. Ebor started his rowing career under Woopi legend Bill Miller, competing in one of Woopi’s first boats, the ‘Rita’.

1959/60 Season: Ebor rowed in a crew with Brett Miller, Bruno and Spiro Notaras (whom Neil worked with for many years), swept by Bill Miller in the new boat, ‘Marion Want’.

Leadership: After 11 years, Bill Miller retired and passed his sweep oar to Ebor, who became Boat Captain in the 1959/60 season, a role he held until the early 1990s. Achievements: From 1961 to 1969, Ebor’s crews won the Branch ‘A’ boat final at the Branch Championships every season.

Life Membership: Ebor was awarded life membership of the Woolgoolga club in the early 1970s and held it for over 50 years.

1976 Milestone: The club purchased its last ply boat, named ‘Neil Ebor Welsh’ and it was christened by Pat.

Successes: Ebor’s crews, including Steve, Skimmo, Nev, and many others, won numerous Branch and Country titles and competed at State and National levels.

1978 Victory: Ebor’s crew, including Peter Benson, Toove, Benny, and Skimmo,

won the NSW Country Championships, defeating the Ballina crew who had won the Aussies three years in a row. They were also selected for the North Coast Team to compete at the Interbranch Championships at Terrigal.

Memorable Moments: One humorous story involves Ebor’s Junior crew in the 1981/82 season. While training off Woopi on a big surf day, Ebor called them “Aft.” Everyone except Ian (Chicko) Simkus complied, as Ian thought Ebor called him “Daft”.

Club Secretary: Ebor also served as club Secretary during the 1985/86 season after Nev Collins moved from the area.

Broad Influence: Ebor was a respected figure in the Woopi club and the broader boating fraternity in Australia.

Red Rock Club: Neil was instrumental in founding the ‘Red Rock’ Surf Life Saving Club, where he was a founder and life member.

For those privileged to be part of his crew, Ebor was more than a coach; he was a mentor and a guiding light. His encouragement and wisdom extended beyond the sport, teaching resilience, teamwork and integrity.

Neil ‘Ebor’ Welsh’s legacy is woven into our lives and the lives of countless others he touched with his wisdom and kindness. While it’s impossible to name everyone he influenced, we honour him by acknowledging the profound effect he had on us all. Rest in peace, Neil ‘Ebor’ Welsh. Your memory and influence will forever remain with us.

Greek Yoghurt

There’s nothing new about it, this is just a reminder of how good this creamy delight is.

Greek yoghurt emerged as a superstar in the culinary and health worlds, captivating taste buds and revolutionising diets globally. Its creamy texture, rich flavour, and impressive health benefits made it a staple in kitchens and a favourite among health enthusiasts. But what exactly sets Greek yoghurt apart from its traditional counterpart, and why should it be a must-have in your daily routine?

Greek yoghurt is a powerhouse of protein, calcium, and probiotics - beneficial bacteria that promote a healthy gut. These probiotics aid in

digestion and boost the immune system. Greek yoghurt is also an excellent source of calcium.

Beyond its health benefits, Greek yoghurt’s versatility in the kitchen is another reason for its widespread acclaim. Its creamy texture and tangy flavour make it a perfect ingredient for both sweet and savoury dishes.

Greek yoghurt has ancient roots beginning in the 5th century BCE, but its origins began somewhere in the Middle East. It is used widely in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines.

Greek yoghurt’s rise to fame is no surprise, given its impressive nutritional profile, culinary versatility, and rich, creamy texture. Whether you’re looking to improve your diet, experiment with new recipes, or simply enjoy

a delicious snack, Greek yoghurt offers endless possibilities. It is also extremely easy to make and very cost-effective.

Marine Rescue Woolgoolga crew assists stranded boaters off North Solitary Island

Volunteers from Marine Rescue Woolgoolga recently assisted three people stranded at Anemone Bay, North Solitary Island after their 5.3 metre vessel succumbed to a flat battery. Volunteer radio operators at Marine Rescue Wooli took a call for assistance from a skipper who could not restart his boat 12 kilometres from the mainland.

Marine Rescue NSW Inspector

Rodney Page said a volunteer crew was assembled and rescue vessel Woolgoolga 30 deployed for the 24 kilometre mission to Anemone Bay “WO 30 hit the water just after 10am

and reached the disabled vessel within 30 minutes,” he said.

“Our crew checked on the welfare of the three persons on board before providing them with a jump starter pack,” Inspector Page said. “The north easterly swell made it challenging to manoeuvre beside the disabled vessel but our crew did a wonderful job. Thankfully the skipper of the disabled vessel was able to restart the engine and WO 30 escorted them safely back to Arrawarra Beach.

“We remind all boaters to check their battery and engine before heading out and despite this skipper having done all his checks before departure, sometimes things fail at sea and this was the case today. Marine Rescue

NSW volunteers are ready to respond at any time of the day or night and we ask all boaters to ensure they Log On with Marine Rescue NSW either by the free Marine Rescue app or VHF channel 16, Logging On saves vital time in the event of an emergency.”

Get ready to vote on September 14 – Locale Learning

With the NSW local government elections coming up on September 14, we encourage you to learn more about the process that impacts not just our roads, rates, and rubbish but also our community places and spaces.

It is easy to be apathetic about local council elections, but the reality is that councils provide essential services that we rely on every day. And the people we elect to represent us make important decisions about how money is spent on behalf of the community. The official campaigning period starts on August 5, and we will start to hear and see candidates out and about in our community.

Nominations to stand in the election (either as an individual or as part of a ticket) end at 12 noon on August 14. So, by then, the starting line-up will be known.

Candidates are members of our community who are taking a big step to do their best to positively contribute to our local government area. Be supportive and kind. We encourage community members to talk with candidates to share concerns and ideas as well as understand why the candidate is running to inform your voting decision. On August 15, the ballot order is drawn. This determines the order in which people’s names appear on the ballot paper. Pre-polling will open on September 7. You can check

if you are eligible to prepoll on the NSW Electoral Commission website.

Leading up to the final stretch before election day, constituents and candidates need to be organised.

Remember that voting in the local government election is compulsory (so mark the date on your calendar!), and make sure that you are enrolled to vote in your local government area before 6pm on August 5. You can check this on the NSW Electoral Commission website.

On election day, polling booths will be open from 8am to 6pm. In the City of Coffs Harbour, we have a popularly elected Mayor. So you will cast a vote to elect a councillor and another vote to elect the Mayor.

The results of the elections will be officially announced after October 1, but you’ll likely know sooner via the ABC news updates.

For those standing as a candidate in the City of Coffs Harbour or just curious

about how local government works, you can find out more about the role of local government and the job of a councillor through our tailored online course.

Nikki Williams and team bring new energy to Council

Nikki Williams seeks to bring a new energy to Council

Local mum, small business owner, and mum to triplet teenage girls, Nikki Williams, is running for Mayor with a group of locals bringing common sense, care and community back to Council.

“I want what you want, a prosperous, safe, and beautiful city for everyone to live, work and play. We need great spaces for our children, safe and tidy places to be proud of, and thriving businesses to create energy, vibrancy, and jobs. I’ll foster a Council that works for the wider community, knowing our villages of Woopi, and the Northern Beaches, all have unique identities and needs to consider”, said Nikki.

“By managing community funds responsibly and focusing on essential services like rates, roads, rubbish and recreation, we’ll innovate and deliver at the highest standards. Our approach will shift from ‘We won’t and we can’t’ to ‘How can we?’,” said Nikki.

Now’s the time to maximise the chance the bypass brings to our community, and Nikki is confident she, and her ticket, can lead Coffs Harbour into a vibrant new era.

“We’re all deeply invested in where we live, run or have run successful local businesses, understand the value of a dollar, and are here to create a brighter future for Coffs Harbour.

Each member of my team, including Cath Fowler, Les Oxford, Gurminder Saro, Matt Gosling, Barbara Haigh, Clinton Hayes, Falak Othman, and Neil Manson, are committed to listening and working with the community to ensure residents’ voices are heard and needs are met”, said Nikki.

“We need to encourage big ideas and robust consultation so everyone can contribute to creating a city we are all proud of. We must listen to truly understand, not just to tick a box.

“This is how we discover what our community wants and improve the

quality of life for all who live here”, said Nikki.

Tegan Swan for Mayor

I am running for Mayor because I am passionate about our community and believe in the power of local government to create positive, meaningful change.

Our local council plays a critical role in shaping the future of our city, and it’s time we give it the attention and leadership it deserves.

Local government is often underappreciated, yet it is one of the most immediate and accessible ways to influence our community’s future. From maintaining our parks and paths to ensuring public safety and fostering economic growth, our local council is at the forefront of creating a sustainable, inclusive, and thriving city. It is crucial that the people who run our council, both elected officials and staff, are dedicated, skilled, and deeply committed to serving our community.

In my two terms as a councillor, I have seen first hand the importance of listening to our community and being willing to adapt to its changing needs. Balancing competing priorities is challenging, but it is essential for achieving the best outcomes for everyone.

We need to ensure that our elected officials are equipped with the skills and mindset necessary to lead effectively in today’s world. This means embracing technology, modern leadership practices, and a willingness to learn and grow.

Local councils are not just about roads and rubbish; they are place shapers, crucial in creating flexible and community-specific service delivery. Ultimately, local government is about people working together to improve their community. It’s not about party politics or stepping stones to further political careers. It’s about making a positive difference in the lives of those around us and ensuring our city is a place we can all be proud of.

In Coffs Harbour, we need outstanding leadership in our local council — both from those elected and those employed.

We need leaders who are inclusive, collaborative, and focused on creating a legacy for future generations.

Our mayor and councillors play a critical role. We are the bridge between the organisation and the community, and that influence can be profound. The positive impact of humble, collaborative, and thoughtful community leaders is invaluable. However, significant challenges arise from outdated leadership and divisive behaviour.

As Mayor, I will focus on getting the little things right, like maintaining our parks and paths, to rebuild trust and show we’re capable of tackling bigger projects. Transparency and clear communication will be at the forefront of my leadership. I will work tirelessly to ensure everyone feels heard, seen,

and valued.

As we approach the 2024 local government elections, I urge you to consider who will best serve our entire community.

Think about their leadership skills, their ability to listen and collaborate, and their commitment to transparency and inclusivity.

Vote for those who want to improve our community for everyone.

Local council belongs to all of us, and it’s a privilege to have this level of service and care in our communities.

Let’s work together to create a Coffs Harbour that is thriving, inclusive, and sustainable.

The Power of Colour

Hey everyone! I’m Kirsty, a Brand Photographer based on the vibrant Coffs Coast. My passion lies in creating personalised photograph collections that convey the unique brand stories and expertise of entrepreneurs and businesses.

As a branding photographer, I know the significance of colour in building a strong visual identity.

It’s not just about beautiful images; it’s about strategically using colour to craft a cohesive visual narrative that resonates with your audience. I delve deep into my clients’ brand values, target audience, and unique selling propositions to select colours that effectively represent their brand and forge an emotional connection.

Consistency in colour usage across all branding materials is paramount. Whether it’s photography, logos or packaging, uniformity reinforces brand recognition and loyalty. Different colours evoke specific emotional responses and associations. For example, earthy tones can convey sustainability, while metallics exude luxury. By leveraging colours strategically, we can subtly shape perceptions and reinforce brand messaging over time.

Colour can significantly influence consumer behaviour, with up to 90% of snap judgments about products based on colour alone.

As a branding photographer, I use colour to evoke specific

When Choosing A Pup School

It is common knowledge amongst those involved in the ‘dog industry’ that pup schools play an integral role in developing a confident, happy dog.

Veterinarians are noticing a marked difference in behaviours between pups who have been to a good pup school and those who have not.

What to look for:

The facilitator should:

be a certified dog trainer and experienced

 come highly recommended

use non-physical, positive methods of training

not encourage or condone the use of ‘equipment’ on pups that may cause discomfort to make them ‘comply’

know their session plans and be confident in using their own information to share with pup owners

always remain impartial when discussing information that is not within their professional field, e.g. procedures carried out by vets.

The course should:

only include pups aged from 8 weeks to 18 weeks. There is a distinct and very obvious difference in intention of older dogs and in the way that they learn, perceive and act instinctively. A mixture of ages can cause many problems in a class

only include pups that have started on a vaccination regime

not necessarily separate small and larger breeds of pups

be no longer than one hour per session. Short and sweet is the recipe for effective learning with young pups

include learning through play and regular socialisation with other pups /handlers

 provide a non-competitive environment

provide young pups with basic obedience skills –particularly recall

give the pups the opportunity to gain confidence within the environment and our human world.

The venue should:

 be fenced and secure

not be accessible to dogs that are not vaccinated or dogs that may ’visit’ while the pup school is in operation

be large enough for pups to spread out

be all weather if possible so that classes are not postponed.

Another Successful Year for our Red Cross Branch

The Annual General Meeting of the local Red Cross branch was held last month, and members and friends of the organisation gathered to celebrate a year that was filled with activity and fun.

Outgoing President Carol Rowe reported on a busy fundraising program that included two major raffles, volunteering with Curryfest and a very successful Red Cross Calling campaign.

Our community programs continue to flourish with great teams of volunteers. These include Hands On, which operates with residents at the Retirement Village, and the Trauma Teddy project, which provides hundreds of lovable teddies to small children under stress. The Emergency Services team continues to assist with disaster recovery and resilience in the face of tragedies.

The incoming executive:

Secretary Judy Boyle, President Kerry Chaffey, Treasurer Margaret Murphy, Vice President Helen Michener, Patron Robyn Rooth (Absent Vice President Sue Perry)

The long-lasting Friendship Afternoon Teas bring together seniors and entertainers for fun afternoons, which include music, sing-a-longs and great home-cooked food. Even after more than thirty years, these events continue to bring cheer to many locals.

During the year, our volunteers received some special awards, including Judy Jackson, who was included in the NSW Hidden Treasurers Honour Roll. Trauma Teddy Coordinator Doreen Liddle received a Red Cross Outstanding Achievement Award, and several members were recognised for 10 and 15 years of service.

Carol thanked all the many coordinators, volunteers, and members who had contributed to such a successful year. In particular, she appreciated the support of past Secretary Annette Dodsworth for her many years of service, Marion Smart and Judy Boyle for their shared secretarial roles, Vice Presidents Kerry Chaffey and Helen Michener for their support and Treasurer Margaret Murphy.

Coffs Harbour Branch President Maureen Hammond carried out the elections, and the new Executive was elected as follows: President Kerry Chaffey, Vice Presidents Helen Michener and Sue Perry, Secretary Judy Boyle, and Treasurer Margaret Murphy.

Next month, on Tuesday, August 13, the Australian Red Cross will be celebrating 110 years of humanitarian service. The Branch is planning a Birthday Party at the Seniors Centre at 2pm that day. Everyone, member or not, is invited to the party to celebrate such a major milestone. If you would like to attend, please call Margaret on 0407 416 339. Our members and volunteers look forward to another busy and successful year. If you would like to join this active and enthusiastic group, please call Kerry on 0475 774 663.

A local mystery? Who are the Freemasons?

Today, like most community organisations, their members have dwindled.

However, with all the hundreds of new homes being built in the area between Moonee and Corindi, the Masons hope that there will be a few men interested in finding out about 21st century Freemasonry. This leads to the question, “Who are the Freemasons?”

The Woolgoolga Masonic Centre was built in 1964, largely using materials and labour donated by local members. Freemasonry was a lot larger then, and visitors used to travel from Nambucca, Dorrigo, Grafton and Maclean.

Back in the 17th century, local men formed clubs so that they could gather together socially, whoever they were and whatever role they had in society. That was pretty revolutionary back in those times, so they kept to themselves and restricted membership to those who were considered to be good men in their community and were well respected and followed the religion of their choice.

To use different words, Freemasonry has always been a fraternity where good men meet socially with the intention of being better men regardless of their religion, politics, wealth, occupation or social status. Their ultimate aim, as individuals, is to live respected and die regretted and to enjoy each other’s friendship in the meantime.

Today, there are Freemasons in nearly every country on the globe, and they are often involved with local charities. In Coffs Harbour, the local Lodges gathered together and formed the Coffs Harbour Freemasons Association,

which actively supports many local charities and is a major supporter of CanDo Cancer. Also in our area, we have the RFBI Coffs Harbour Masonic Village, which is open to anyone and includes one of the best Nursing homes in the region.

Each member is encouraged to develop their own ideas and views, which they keep to themselves. To make Lodge meetings enjoyable for everyone, conversations which include religion and politics are totally avoided. The facts are simple: Freemasonry is not a religion, nor does it have any interest whatsoever in politics, but any good man can join, and Ministers, Rabbis, and politicians can all be members.

Another misconception is that Freemasonry is an international organisation, but no more so than a local cricket or bridge club. Just like any club, the members of local Lodges pay an annual registration fee to their state Grand Lodge. However, each

Grand Lodge is totally and completely independent of all other Grand Lodges in other states and countries. There is no such thing as a national body or an international organisation, and absolutely no connection between Freemasonry and any other organisation.

Some people think that the Freemasons are a ‘secret society’ but their buildings are often prominent, clearly marked with signs and are easily identified. Their records are no more private than the minutes of your local P&C and less interesting.

In fact, there are no ‘secrets’ except for a private handshake used to discretely identify another Mason in a crowd. The only actual secret is discovering the truth from among all the anti-Masonic misinformation and conspiracy theories that abound on social media.

As the saying goes, to be one, ask one – and the truth will be yours. UraraWoolgoolga469@gmail.com

Marine Rescue Woolgoolga Volunteer Grant

I’m happy to have secured a grant for Marine Rescue Woolgoolga to purchase extension speakers. These speakers will enable radio operators to monitor calls even when they leave the room. Marine Rescue is a fantastic volunteer organisation in our community. If you are interested in joining, please get in touch with them.

Rotary Club of Woolgoolga Volunteer Grant

We’re grateful for the support of the Rotary Club of Woolgoolga, which has been a pillar of our community for the past 35 years. Securing funding for a marquee was a significant achievement, and we look forward to continuing our partnership. If you’re interested in volunteering, please get in touch with them - your support is invaluable.

Coffs Bypass Upgrades

The Coffs Harbour Bypass is well on its way to completion. With over onethird of the project done, including

55% of the earthworks and significant progress on bridges and bridge piles, we’re making steady strides. We’re committed to keeping you updated every step of the way, so you can be part of this journey.

The Bypass, the largest infrastructure project in Coffs Harbour’s history, is set to transform our region. It will create thousands of jobs and bring about a significant improvement in our daily lives. This is a fantastic outcome for us all, and we can look forward to the positive changes it will bring.

Embracing Sustainable Living

Cultivating Green Spaces

In the diverse landscapes of the Coffs Coast, from suburban neighbourhoods to sprawling acreages and expansive farmlands, connecting with nature is a cherished aspect of daily life. Even in these varied settings, gardening offers a wealth of benefits for individuals and the environment alike.

Growing your own food, whether it’s

a handful of herbs on a balcony or a row of vegetables in a backyard plot, holds immense value. Not only does it provide access to fresh, organic produce, but it also fosters a deeper connection to the land and encourages a more sustainable lifestyle.

For those just starting out, a kitchen herb garden is an excellent introduction to gardening.

Choose a sunny spot, whether it’s a windowsill or a balcony, and select a variety of herbs that thrive in our coastal climate, such as basil, mint, and parsley. Plant them in pots or containers filled with well-draining soil, and remember to water regularly. Not only will you have a convenient supply of aromatic herbs for cooking, but you’ll also be supporting local biodiversity and reducing your carbon footprint by sourcing ingredients from your own garden.

For those with a bit more space and ambition, consider cultivating a small vegetable garden.

Start with easy-to-grow crops like

cherry tomatoes, lettuce, and zucchini, and gradually expand your repertoire as you gain confidence. Embrace companion planting techniques to naturally deter pests and maximise yield, and don’t forget to enrich the soil with compost or organic fertilisers to promote healthy growth. By growing your own food, even in modest spaces, you’re not only promoting self-sufficiency and reducing your reliance on store-bought produce, but you’re also contributing to a healthier environment and community.

So grab your gardening gloves, embrace the simplicity of back-tobasics gardening, and reap the rewards of cultivating green spaces on the diverse landscapes of the Coffs Coast. Happy gardening!

Barking up the right trees to help koalas

A project harnessing super sleuth hounds to unravel a secret koala business is among those to be backed by the City of Coffs Harbour in the new financial year.

Council resolved to financially assist 22 community projects through the Environmental Levy Grants Program 2024/25, and they will share in $424,610.

Successful initiatives include those undertaking bush regeneration, lantana eradication, restoration of littoral rainforest and rehabilitation of a travelling stock reserve. And there are some projects which are ‘out of the box’.

Jaliigirr Biodiversity Alliance has won $25,000 for a novel approach to tracking koala movement and monitoring the genetics of the little Aussie icon.

The group will use ‘canine scent detectives’ to find fresh koala scat in mapped koala habitat areas, including Roberts Hill, City Hill, Coffs Creek, Regional Botanic Garden, Korora, and Woolgoolga.

The droppings can indicate if koalas are moving between these areas and if genetic flow exists across the landscape.

The koala scat can also be used to assess the comparative disease status of koalas in each of these areas which may inform future management of the populations.

“These Environmental Levy Grants are all about improving the natural world around us, which is perhaps the single

greatest asset of life on the Coffs Coast,” City of Coffs Harbour Mayor Paul Amos said.

“We live in paradise, but we should never take that for granted, and sometimes Mother Nature needs a hand.”

The Environmental Levy Grants Program is vital in funding projects that positively impact Coffs Harbour’s local environment and community.

By supporting these initiatives, the City aims to create a greener, healthier, more sustainable future for all residents.

Stay Sharp with your local Accountant

Tax Time | Be aware of ATO Scams

Scammers often pretend to be from trusted organisations such as the ATO and will try to trick you into paying money or giving out your personal information.

In the digital world that we now live in people need to be aware of the warning signs of phone, email, and SMS scams.

Phone Scams

⚠ Making threats of arrest and demanding payment over the phone

⚠ Sending pre-recorded messages or leaving messages asking you to call back

⚠ Showing ATO or Australian phone numbers in the caller ID

⚠ Telling you that your tax file number (TFN) has been cancelled

The ATO will never threaten you with arrest, demand you to stay on the line until payment is made, send pre-recorded messages, or cancel TFN’s. Calls from the ATO do not show a number and will always show as No Caller ID.

Email and SMS Scams

⚠ Asking you to provide your personal identity and financial institution details to receive a refund

⚠ Requesting that you click on a link, log on to an online service, or download forms or attachments

Be very careful when downloading any attachments or clicking links, even if the message appears to be legitimate or from someone you know. The ATO may use SMS or email to contact you but will never ask you to return your personal information or to click a link to log in to the ATO’s online services this way.

Social Media Scams

Scammers are creating fake social media accounts and will send requests asking for your personal information or payments.

The ATO does have social media accounts but will never use these platforms to ask for your personal information. Ways to tell if it is not a genuine account are if there are very few followers, poor grammar is used and if there is no blue verification tick next to the name.

If you are not sure if it is the ATO trying to contact you, do not reply!

Instead phone 1800 008 540 to verify or report it.

Your accountant can also see most ATO correspondence and should be able to assist you in identifying if it’s a scam.

Law Learnings

When it becomes important to have an Enduring Guardian

I have always been an advocate of getting your legal affairs in order, but it has really hit home for me this month just how important having the right documents in place is.

I have recently found myself in a situation where instead of being the solicitor preparing the documents, I have become the person in need of them for an aging parent. It is equal parts heartbreaking and frustrating to become a carer for someone you love experiencing cognitive decline. One day, they are exactly the person you knew and loved growing up and can get themselves a cup of tea and make a sandwich for lunch without any hint of a problem. The next day they cannot remember where the kitchen is. Each day is completely unpredictable as to how much care and assistance will be needed.

Unfortunately for me, this all happened rather suddenly, I had to step in and take over when the plan in place while my other parent is overseas fell through. I thought it was going to be a simple matter of packing some clothes and moving the parent in with me for a few weeks. That’s when I found out exactly how much I didn’t know. I had no idea what bills might come in and need to be paid, whether there were any services that need to be cancelled, or what else I even needed to consider.

I realised just how important that day-to-day stuff is when I found a box of different medications while packing.

I wasn’t sure what was current, what medications might belong to the other parent, or how much I could trust the description of “I take one red one and one white one every morning”.

A quick call to the parent’s GP office and I am promptly informed that they are not able to release that information to me. Rather than resorting to Dr Google, I started looking around the house for legal documents. I didn’t find any, but a call to my parents’ solicitor confirmed that they did have documents prepared, including an appointment of Enduring Guardian to make medical decisions on their behalf and that they were currently held in safe custody storage.

Better yet, the documents also included a back -up plan in the event that one parent was not able to act as a guardian for the other, I was listed as the substitute guardian.

I was able to attend the solicitor’s office, obtain a certified copy of the Enduring Guardian document, and then present at the GPs office with ID and documents confirming the other parent was overseas in order to get confirmation about the medication question.

Nothing is simple about having to provide care to someone with cognitive decline, but it is much simpler to do the things that you need to do when there are appropriate legal documents in place.

Even if you already have the documents, make sure they contain a back-up plan if possible and are stored somewhere where they can be easily found when they are needed.

Heart To Heart

The great sporting comeback of 1974

Third grade grand final in Lismore and District Cricket. Lismore Workers over sixty runs behind. Eight wickets down. My turn to bat.

We scored the winning runs still eight wickets down. I’m proudly nought not out. In my opinion, the greatest defensive innings ever played.

How I love a good comeback.

The greatest comeback of all time not about sport. About death and life. Central figure: Jesus of Nazareth. Cruelly executed. Declared dead by experts in the art of crucifixion. Jesus done and dusted, alive again. Seen by hundreds. Eating with his closest friends. Physically touched by one who doubted what he saw. Jesus dead. Now alive forever.

How I love this greatest comeback of all time.

Along with over two billion Christians throughout the world convinced Jesus came back to life. That he was alive. When Jesus rose from the dead everything changed. Nothing ever the same again. Life changing implications whether you accept them or not.

In the words of one who saw the empty tomb, who grappled with the guilt and shame of denying he ever knew Jesus, ‘Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you’.

‘Living hope.’ How precious those words. Not something vague and uncertain. But life-giving and certain.

Certainty of forgiveness; wiping away of guilt and shame; eternal life after death in this world; friendship with God; purpose and meaning; grace and strength in the face of life’s battles.

Christian singer/songwriter/children’s entertainer, Colin Buchanan, sums it up in these lyrics, ‘Who’s the King of the jungle, who’s the King of the sea, who’s the King of the universe, who’s the King of me. I tell you J E S U S. Yes! He’s the King of me.’

The heart of the matter. Three times Jesus told his closest friends he would be arrested, crucified and on the third day would come back to life.

When he kept his promise and came back to life, Jesus revealed all his promises, all his words trustworthy and true. They can be relied on. Actively at work in the lives of those who trust him. Jesus affirmed his claim and right to be the ruler of our lives.

My testimony: Jesus’ grace, mercy, love and faithfulness as the King of my life brings a fullness of life found in nothing or no one else.

Jesus is the risen Lord! Stay tuned.

Stress and You

Last month, I wrote about the top five regrets of dying from research by Australian palliative care nurse Bronnie Ware.

One was, “I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me”.

What does that mean to you?

Was there an adventure or a dream you wanted to pursue, but you just couldn’t make it happen for one reason or another? Was it a career path, a relationship, or traveling to faraway places to see where the wind takes you?

Maybe other responsibilities got in the way? Friends and family didn’t understand or agree with you and convinced you that your ideas were fanciful or weird. Or did your parents want you to pursue a better or ‘proper’ career than the one you wanted? So, you did what you felt you had to, to keep the peace or to fit in.

Not living true to yourself! Resulting in underlying stress. Do you still wonder, “What if I had followed my heart?”

Do you still have the desire to fulfil your dream?

As a young adult, I wanted to travel the world. I saw parts of Oz and New Zealand, and then ‘life got in the way’.

The thing is, decades later, the travel bug is still in me. I have a plan to do whatever it takes to continue my travels so I don’t die regretting not making it happen.

We grow up being asked “What do you want to do with your life?”

And we get busy doing it, even if we are not sure. There seems to be so much time!

At some stage, we feel time is running out, and the new question is, “How do I want to make the best of the rest of my life?”

If you were to pick just one thing that you still want to achieve, what would it be? Why not do whatever it takes to make it happen?

Start today! There are so many opportunities just in Woopi!
