WORCESTER ART MUSEUM
ANNUAL REPOR T FISCAL YEAR 2021 SEPT 1, 2020 – AUG 31, 2021
Message from the Director In Fiscal Year 2021, the Worcester Art Museum emerged from the shadow of COVID-19, along with cultural organizations across the country. After being closed for nearly seven months in 2020, the Museum reopened its galleries to members on October 1, 2020 and to the general public on October 7. WAM’s visitors are steadily returning and in-person programming is becoming livelier, while also continuing a vibrant presence online. I am pleased to report that the Museum has also made exciting institutional progress in many areas. During the past year, the Museum was able to move forward on several major capital projects, most notably, our new Lancaster Plaza. On December 2, 2021, after over a year of construction, the ribbon was cut on this new, architecturally stunning, fully accessible public entrance. This improved entrance at the Higgins Education Wing—which advances our strategic imperative to increase accessibility—was made possible by the generosity of Jean McDonough (1927-2021) and the Jean and Myles McDonough Charitable Foundation. A portion of their extraordinary and transformational $10 million gift made in 2019 kickstarted this project. The City of Worcester’s cultural life is stronger and healthier because of Jean, and we at WAM are forever grateful for her many years of leadership, service, and support. Our special onsite exhibitions, The Kimono in Print: 300 Years of Japanese Design, What the Nazis Stole from Richard Neumann (and the search to get it back), and The Iconic Jersey: Baseball x Fashion, all stood out this year. The Iconic Jersey coincided with the opening of Worcester’s new Polar Park and was our way of embracing the city’s energized baseball culture. We also curated our first ever virtual exhibition, Kimono Couture: The Beauty of Chiso, which drew over 11,000 local, national, and international online visits. Our studio art classes and public programs were equally creative and responsive to our audiences’ needs during this highly unpredictable period. A hybrid schedule of both inperson and virtual classes enabled nearly 20,000 individuals—from across the U.S. and around the globe—to participate directly in an art class or public program presented by WAM. Our international art loan program processed 55 loans despite the continuing complications imposed by the global pandemic; 22 of these represented renewals of long-term loans to institutions in Great Britain, Texas, Kentucky, New York, and various locations throughout New England; and 23 objects were requested for special exhibitions in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Fort Worth, Washington, D.C., New England, Denmark, and Spain. According to audience data from the exhibition venues, more than 550,000 visitors viewed our loans in person. This is an outstanding number, particularly given lingering COVID-19 related restrictions, and emphasizes the extended reach and national and global impact of the Worcester Art Museum. In the spring of 2021, the Board of Trustees, together with staff and volunteers, initiated a strategic planning process. Over the course of 6½ months, much research, many meetings, and a lot of hard work went into developing a forward plan for WAM. Entitled “Foundation for the Future,” this plan was approved by the Board of Trustees in October 2021 and will guide the Museum’s work over the next five years. This work has already unified our thinking, rededicated our commitment to our mission, and underscores our commitment to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion. WAM’s staff driven Diversity, Equity, Access, and Inclusion (DEAI) Committee, formed in September 2019 in our previous fiscal year, continued its work into 2021. A team of 11 members engaged their colleagues in DEAI centered learning. We established a part-time DEAI Specialist position and employed a DEAI consultant, both of whom have helped to advance our work and define our framework as we move forward. I am grateful to lead an institution so dedicated to improving itself on a consistent basis. As we expanded our own knowledge base around DEAI, our institutional support grew, too. I am sincerely grateful for the outpouring of support we have received this year. These were unnerving times. To know that we had the unwavering encouragement of so many, not only meant a great deal to me and all of WAM’s staff, but also has affirmed WAM’s vital role within our community and enabled the Museum to move forward with conviction. While household memberships and business partnerships did waver temporarily this past year, philanthropic support surpassed our projections by 20%. Thank you! I want to express my appreciation for and extend my thanks to the Museum’s steadfast employees. Their adaptability, creativity, and commitment to their work and to our members and visitors has been inspiring. The Board of Trustees worked enthusiastically with staff to generate an informed and inspired Strategic Plan while helping to guide us through some very unpredictable financial times. Their commitment to our mission enabled us to move forward positively and productively. In addition, I wish to thank all our corporators, members, donors, funders, volunteers, visitors, partners, followers, students, and neighbors. Together, we will learn, build, and grow as we continue to connect people, communities, and cultures through the experience of art. The Iconic Jersey: Baseball x Fashion June 12 – September 12, 2021 Over the course of 170 years, the baseball jersey has become an iconic emblem of American culture, extending well beyond a sports uniform to inspire fashion trends and serve as a means of everyday, individual self-expression. While the ubiquity of the American baseball shirt is undeniable, there has been little scholarly research on its importance to material and popular culture through time. With The Iconic Jersey: Baseball x Fashion, WAM became the first museum to unveil an exhibition focusing specifically on the design evolution of baseball jerseys and their impact on wider national culture. The show featured 37 garments, including historic and contemporary jerseys as well as runway looks—from Jesse Tannehill’s 1908 Boston Red Sox Uniform Shirt to MIZIZI’s Black Lives Matter jersey—along with two, one-of-a-kind jersey chairs and other ephemera that capture the phenomenon of the baseball shirt, both on and off the field. Made possible through generous support from the Fletcher Foundation. Additional support provided by the Arthur M. and Martha R. Pappas Foundation, Bill and Joan Alfond Foundation, Lunder Foundation-Peter and Paula Lunder family, Murray Family Charitable Foundation, Red Sox Foundation, Larry and Stacey Lucchino, Renee and James Skeffington, Jr., Cynthia L. Strauss and Harry A. Sherr, and an anonymous donor. Susan Swinand, Interdependence, 2018, watercolor and gouache on paper
Nature Imagined by Susan Swinand October 1, 2020 – February 7, 2021 In collaboration with ArtsWorcester, the Worcester Art Museum presented works by Susan Swinand, the Sally R. Bishop Prize Winner of the 2019 ArtsWorcester Biennial. Primarily a painter with a preference for waterbased media and abstraction, Swinand has long found the natural world a source of inspiration. Nature Imagined explores Swinand's creative process and her drive to find balance between opposing forces in nature. By allowing the materials to take on a form of their own, Swinand taps into her subconscious to make meaning out of biomorphic shapes and fluid gestures. In doing so, Swinand creates imaginative worlds, full of contradictions, enchantment, and even a little bit of humor. Organized in partnership with ArtsWorcester.

Kimono Couture: The Beauty of Chiso (virtual exhibition) November 28, 2020 – ongoing The Museum’s first ever virtual exhibition, Kimono Couture explores the world of traditional kimono design practiced by the revered 465-year-old kimono design and production house Chiso, based in Kyoto, Japan. Co-curated by Vivian Li and Christine Starkman, the exhibition features the Worcester Wedding Kimono, a one-of-a-kind contemporary wedding kimono specially commissioned by WAM from Chiso, and the first kimono ever commissioned as a work of art by an art museum. Due to travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the exhibition was presented on the Museum’s website. The interactive show included a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the Worcester Wedding Kimono, and revealed a new kimono theme to explore each week, leading up to the opening of the accompanying in-house exhibition, The Kimono in Print: 300 Years of Japanese Design. Organized by WAM in partnership with Chiso. Support provided by the Fletcher Foundation and Michie Family Curatorial Fund. Research made possible by the JapanUnited States Friendship Commission and the Northeast Asia Council of the Association for Asian Studies. Additional support provided by Emily and James Holdstein, and Sandy Hubbard and Thomas J. Logan. Sponsored by: Cornerstone Bank and Imperial Distributors, Inc.

ANNUAL REPORT / Fiscal Year 2021
The Kimono in Print: 300 Years of Japanese Design February 6 – May 2, 2021 The Kimono in Print is the first show devoted to examining the kimono as a major source of inspiration and experimentation in Japanese print culture, from the Edo period (1603 – 1868) to the Meiji period (1868 – 1912). Drawing on the Museum’s extensive collection of Japanese prints, the exhibition explored the complementary influence of design ideas between kimono and print artists—and the consumers interested in both kimonos and prints. The exhibition included presentation of the Worcester Wedding Kimono, created for the Museum by the prestigious Japan-based garment maker, Chiso, known for their remarkable couture designs. Generously supported by the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation. Early research was made possible by the Japan Foundation and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
A view into the exhibition:What the Nazis Stole from Richard Neumann (and the search to get it back)
What the Nazis Stole from Richard Neumann (and the search to get it back) April 10, 2021 – January 16, 2022 The Worcester Art Museum presented an exhibition of works from the collection of Dr. Richard Neumann (1879 – 1959), a discerning and prolific Austrian businessman of Jewish heritage who was committed to promoting the important role of the arts in civic life—and whose collection of more than 200 paintings and sculptures was confiscated by the Nazis through forced sales or outright theft. The exhibition includes 12 Old Master paintings and two sculptures and trace Dr. Neumann and his family’s efforts to reclaim these works over the last 70 years. After the exhibition, the loans will be integrated into WAM’s existing Old Master collection galleries, further enhancing the Museum’s presentation of such works—and in keeping with Dr. Neumann's lifelong desire to have great art accessible and enjoyed by the public. Support provided by the Jewish Federation of Central Massachusetts and anonymous donors. Additional support provided by the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University, PEACE Fund GWCF, Marlene and David Persky, Carol and Michael Sleeper, Dr. and Mrs. Herbert Dean, Dr. Shirley S. Siff, Johanna D. Drooz Yoffie and Alan S. Yoffie and Carol Seager. Related programming supported by the Amelia and Robert H. Haley Memorial Lecture Fund. Sponsored by: Fallon Health

Volunteer Impact The Worcester Art Museum thanks all of its generous docents and volunteers who give many hours of their time to the Museum. Volunteers help us advance our mission and without them, our work is truly not possible. In Fiscal Year 2021, almost 100 volunteers put in approximately 4,000 hours of work on behalf of the Museum—both virtually and in person. In addition, WAM is grateful to all of the Trustees and committees across the Museum, as well as to the Corporators and Members’ Council, for their important work on committees and for their help with day-to-day activities at the Museum.

The Krashes Collection The Worcester Art Museum has been lucky enough to receive the distinguished American Folk Art collection of longtime WAM supporters Barbara and David Krashes. The Krashes’ generous gift is comprised of over 40 works, carefully and lovingly gathered over six decades and representing some of the most notable names in American Folk Art. The New England-focused collection reflects the larger social transformations taking place in the region at that time, such as economic expansion, immigration, and the emergence of a middle class. WAM is honored to take over the care of such an extraordinary collection of Americana, which places our museum at the forefront of those with such collections.
Viking Age Sword with Silvered Hilt WAM’s arms and armor collection was enhanced by the addition of a Vikingera Northern European sword (2021.22) which is on view in one of our Medieval Galleries, commonly referred to as our “Spanish Ceiling Gallery.” It is made with steel and silver with intricate striped metal detailing on the sword’s guard and pommel. This sword has the characteristic hilt of the classic Viking Age sword and is an excellent example of an iconic type entirely lacking from the Higgins Collection. Wadsworth Jarrell, Black Family Our American department acquired the 1968 painting Black Family (2021.2) by Wadsworth Jarrell (b. 1929), a founding member of the Black Artists Collective AfriCOBRA, a group formed in Chicago in 1968 which was associated with the Black Arts Movement in America. Black Family depicts a Black man and woman embracing two young children. The painting counters negative stereotypes of dysfunctional Black families and offers an example of one of the longest running artist collectives’ distinct aesthetic devised for social change.
Chiso, Worcester Wedding Kimono Accompanying exhibitions Kimono Couture: The Beauty of Chiso and The Kimono in Print: 300 Years of Japanese Design featured a one-of-a-kind kimono designed for WAM by the venerable, Kyoto-based garment maker Chiso— the first commission of its kind by an art museum. The wedding kimono, or uchikake, features an octagonal pattern of abstract maple leaves—iconic symbols of autumn in both Japan and New England. Inspired by the distinctive “Seven Hills” of Worcester that define the city’s topography, Chiso chose to incorporate seven advanced techniques in the production of the Worcester Wedding Kimono.
Louisiana P. Bendolph, American Housetop for the Arnetts Mary Lee Bendolph, To Honor Mr. Dial Two softground etchings by Louisiana and Mary Lee Bendolph, relatives, were acquired by the Prints, Drawings, and Photographs Department at WAM. The etchings were created by pressing samples of their famed Gee’s Bend quilts into large copper plates (2021.3, 2021.4). Both prints will be on display in WAM’s 2022 exhibition Us Them We | Race Ethnicity Identity.

Notable Loans
Paolo Veneziano (Italian, active 1333 – 1358), Panels from the Wings of a Triptych, mid 14th century, tempera on panel, Museum Purchase, 1927.19.
This year, a total of 55 WAM objects have been loaned to museums across the country and around the world as a part of our temporary and long-term loans programs. 23 WAM objects have been on temporary loan to museums around the globe, while 22 more WAM long-term objects renewed their loan to other institutions. While the loan of all of these artworks is exceptional, among these objects were a few that were recognized as particularly notable. Panels from the Wings of a Triptych by Paolo Veneziano, loaned to the J. Paul Getty Museum, were the result of a recent collaboration. The loan of the Veneziano panels is the second time that WAM has sent these panels to the Getty in the last several years. The first time the panels were loaned was for research, and this second time was for a Veneziano-themed exhibition resulting from the initial research—more information is included in the Conservation Highlights section. Over the summer, WAM’s Blue Tree by Joan Mitchell was lent to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, where an exhibition on Mitchell recently opened, highlighting her success in the maledominated abstract expressionist circles. WAM also lent Blue Sky by Georgia O’Keeffe to the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid. The Museo’s exhibition was the first ever retrospective look at O’Keeffe’s work to occur in Spain and drew over 100,000 inperson visitors. The exhibition is available in a digital format, with the Museo’s website featuring a virtual walk-through where one can see WAM’s Blue Sky on Sala 1, Explorando Nuevo México.

Conservation
Arms and Armor
This image shows the five steps of Straehle's conservation treatment of the back side of one of the shutter doors—the one depicting Saint Blaise. This door had been sawn into three pieces when the triptych was dismantled in the early 19th century. The fully restored panel is on the far right.
Conservation Highlights
In Fiscal Year 2021, Bill MacMillan, Project Conservator of Arms and Armor, focused on the conservation treatment of approximately 30 arms and armor objects. Work was done in preparation for a touring exhibition of WAM’s arms and armor collection, titled The Age of Armor: Treasures from the Higgins Armory Collection at the Worcester Art Museum. The exhibition is slated to travel to four venues in the coming years so museumgoers in other parts of the country will have an opportunity to experience the Higgins Collection before the opening of WAM’s permanent gallery to house our arms and armor collection.
In 2020-21, Rita Albertson, The George F. and Sybil H. Fuller Term Chair in Conservation and Chief Conservator, participated in a research study with colleagues from the J. Paul Getty Museum and the National Gallery of Washington to identify and reunite all the parts of a previously dissembled altarpiece associated with a work in WAM’s collection, Seven Saints by Paolo Veneziano (1300 – 65, Venice). In August of 2020, Rita accompanied the seven small panels to the Getty, where they underwent comparative technical analyses to establish whether or not they originated from the same altarpiece as two works owned by the Getty and one work owned by the National Gallery. After museums shut down in March of 2020, Rita and her colleagues used Zoom to compare notes and draw their conclusions, which were published in an essay for the catalogue that accompanied the exhibition Heavenly Ornament: The Art of Paolo Veneziano at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, July 13, 2021 – October 3, 2021. Ten of the eleven fragments that composed the original altarpiece were reunited in the exhibition and arranged in a display that was reminiscent of their original placements. As a result, scholars have given a name to the altarpiece—it is now called The Worcester Triptych. Prior to the exhibition at The Getty, WAM Paintings Conservator Birgit Straehle completed a reconstruction of the reverse sides of the Seven Saints, which had been severely damaged. Guided by the findings of the research project, Birgit’s impressive treatment greatly enhanced the presentation of The Worcester Triptych, allowing visitors to appreciate the high quality of both sides of the painted panels. In 2023, Seven Saints will be returned to the galleries at WAM and exhibited so visitors can see both sides of the Worcester panels for the first time. The display will also include information about the technical analyses and the original context for Seven Saints.
