Dear Friend in Christ, While Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” (John 7:37-38) The theme for the 2013 Prayer Journal, “Rivers of Living Water,” is based on these words of Jesus from the Gospel of John. As we come to the Lord each day in prayer, he will quench our thirst for him with the life-giving waters of his Spirit. The Scripture verses and quotations from saints and Church writings included in this year’s prayer journal will remind us throughout the year that it is at the well of prayer and the sacraments that we can drink and be satisfied. Many Christians find journaling to be a useful spiritual and practical tool, and they are enthusiastic about its many benefits. What kinds of things might you want to write down in your journal? Here are some ideas: • Make a note of Scripture passages that seem to “speak” particularly to you. • Jot down those things in your life that you find challenging as well as those instances when you experience a “victory” or a special blessing from the Lord.
• Summarize what you learn in your times of quiet meditation and record resolutions you make in response to God’s word to you. • Keep track of petitions, especially for those for whom you have promised to pray, as well as answered prayers. • Express your love and praise to the Lord by composing your own prayers. At the end of the year, you’ll have a convenient “record” that you can leaf through to help you recall how the Lord has worked in your life and what he has spoken to you. As you drink deeply from God’s rivers of living water, may your love for him be enlivened and your thirsty spirit be refreshed! The Word Among Us Press

he Holy Spirit is the Spirit of life, the fountain of water springing up to eternal life, the One through whom the Father restores life to those who are dead through sin, until one day he will raise in Christ their mortal bodies. —Blessed John Paul II, Encyclical, On the Holy Spirit in the Life of the Church and the World
