6:30 pm Mia Kalef (Book Launch) The Secret Life of Babies (North Atlantic Books $19.95) A bold affirmation that we are sentient before conception and in the womb, The Secret Life of Babies reveals groundbreaking findings: babies are able to remember their earliest experiences, and medical interventions during birth—like forceps and Caesareans—can imprint our relationships with the world. Mia Kalef presents a six-step protocol for detecting these individual imprints and taking reparative steps for physiological and emotional balance. Dr. Mia Kalef was a chiropractor and craniosacral therapist for 18 years. She has worked with hundreds of families, helping them resolve the health effects of challenging birth experiences. Currently, she mentors practitioners and the public in enhancing their skills in pre-birth, birth, and intuitive dynamics.

Shake a Paw: An Evening of Dog Stories in Memory of Joan Betty Stuchner
Presented by Christianne’s Lyceum
This year, Vancouver lost one of its great children’s writers to cancer. Joan Betty Stuchner created many wonderful characters in the course of her career, but perhaps our favourite is Bagels, the insane dog in her final novel. In Joan’s memory, and because who doesn’t like a good dog story, we’ve gathered some of our favourite children’s writers together to share their best tales... or should that be tails? Curl up and listen, share your own dog story, and create an amazing dog-themed craft! It’ll be more fun than chasing a Frisbee over and over and over again. Featuring: Caroline Adderson, Jacquie Pearce, Linda Bailey, and Cindy Heinrichs, who will read in honour of Joan Betty Stuchner.
Historic Joy Kogawa House 1450 West 64th Avenue, Vancouver
Host: Ann-Marie Metten, Executive Director. They will speak on the experiences they had producing the most recent VACT production, Ga Ting. You will also get an exclusive preview of VACT’s 2015 production, Empire of the Son, written and performed by artist-in-residence and former CBC Radio host Tetsuro Shigematsu. The VACT aims to bring more Asian-Canadian actors to the stage and to showcase Asian-Canadian stories.

Chapbooks: From Inspiration to Marketing with Heidi Greco and S.R. Duncan
There’s more than one way of getting your work “out there,” and a chapbook may be just the means you’re looking for. Join two experienced chapbookers for a handson, how-to introduction. There’s more than one way of assembling a chapbook, and several ways to bind and finish them. This session goes through those elements and more—you’ll learn about ISBNs and even get tips on how to promote and sell your chapbook. To register, email admin1@rebuscreative.com. Heidi Greco lives in Surrey, where she works as a writer and editor. She has a special affinity for chapbooks and has amassed a small collection of them. One of her favourites among her own publications is A: The Amelia Poems (Lipstick Press), a chapbook of speculative poems about Amelia Earhart. S.R. Duncan is a producer, publicist, writer, and poet. He was long-time owner of Pink Flamingo Works, a graphic design and small press publishing house specializing in chapbooks and promotional material for limited budgets. His broadcasting credits include CKNW, CiTR, Shaw TV, CJSF, and Vancouver CO-OP radio, where he produced a weekly radio show called Wax Poetic for 12 years. Duncan has blazed a unique trail as a Vancouver arts community builder and a mentor to dozens of artists and small non-profits.

Free professional development sessions on a variety of literary topics
Vancouver Public Library 350 West Georgia Street, Vancouver
Alma Van Dusen Room 11:00 Am Writing for Children with Janet Love Morrison When writing for children, it’s important to ask yourself if your writing contains the all-important ingredients: spark, enthusiasm, wonder, and curiosity. Children don’t want to read about what an adult thinks they’d enjoy. Children want to read about what they actually enjoy. Janet Love Morrison offers this two-hour workshop to help writers gain clarity when writing for young readers. Janet has written five books, including The Crazy Canucks: Canada’s Legendary Ski Team (winner of the 2009 One Book, One Vancouver award) foreword by Peter Mansbridge, Harbour Publishing; Radar the Rescue Dog, foreword by Justin Trudeau, Friesen Press; and her latest, The Lotus Farmer, Friesen Press. 1:15 pm
Creating an Author Profile with Monique Sherrett
Presented by SFU Publishing and Simon & Schuster Canada Authors today, whether self-published or contracted with a publishing house, must have solid self-promotion skills. In a digital world, authors must understand social media basics; how to build the right audience; how to work with editors, designers, and publishing professionals; and how to use print, radio, and other paid media. This one-hour workshop is ideal for published and emerging authors. Monique Sherrett has a passion for all things digital. She began her career at Raincoast Books, where she spearheaded online marketing strategies for various Harry Potter campaigns. She founded Boxcar Marketing in 2007 and is an associate professor in Simon Fraser University’s Publishing program. 2:30 pm
Finding Revenue in a Digital World of Books and Magazines with Trevor Battye and Suzanne Norman
Presented by SFU Publishing and Simon & Schuster Canada Whether publishing books or magazines, sales and monetization continue to be major challenges for publishers. This workshop is for publishers looking for creative ways to monetize content. Through a variety of examples and case studies, participants will learn tactics for reaching new audiences and re-engaging existing ones, as well as marketing strategies for creating partnerships that drive sales and increase revenues. Trevor Battye is a co-founder and partner at Clevers Media, a media-consulting firm, and a regular speaker in Simon Fraser University’s Publishing program. Suzanne Norman is the director of SFU Publishing Workshops and of Special Initiatives in SFU’s Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing. Confessions of a Freelance Writer—Strategies for Finding Better-Paying Work with Colin Moorhouse
This two-hour session, led by Colin Moorhouse, will cover specific steps that non-fiction freelance writers can—and should—take to consistently find better-paying work. It will include such topics as where to start, deliverables, establishing a presence, marketing, and money. The workshop will be suitable for those just starting their writing careers, and for old hands, too. Colin has been a freelance speechwriter since 1993, with clients in the public and private sectors around the world. He has two websites: one on making a living as a freelance writer (www.fearlessfreelancing.com), and the other on the craft of speech writing (www. weneedaspeech.com). 1:00 pm
Create Your Publishing Road Map with Jesse Finkelstein and Trena White
Are you writing a manuscript and wondering how to publish it? In this twohour seminar, two book-publishing veterans talk about the pros and cons of self-publishing versus working with a publisher, and the steps involved with each. They’ll discuss how to approach a publisher, when you need an agent and how to find one, what it costs to self-publish, and what it takes to self-publish effectively. Jesse Finkelstein and Trena White are the founders of Page Two, a company that helps non-fiction authors navigate publishing options. They are the former COO and publisher of Douglas & McIntyre. Read more about them on their website, www.pagetwostrategies.com. 3:00 pm
Walking the Line—How Strong Lines Make Strong Poems with George Murray
Saturday
A good sentence makes sense; a good poem makes several senses. How does a lyrical poet create layers of meaning in their work? Not just through the craft of image, metaphor, and symbol, but also the craft of creating the perfect line. How does one create a strong line and, in turn, a strong poem? Take a tour through some lining strategies with George Murray, author of six acclaimed books of poetry and aphorisms (Whiteout, Glimpse, The Hunter, etc.), instructor at the University of Toronto (introductory and advanced poetry), reviewer (The Globe and Mail), and magazine editor (Bookninja, New Poetry, Literary Review of Canada, etc.).

Van City Soul Quartet
VYT has a 30 year history of producing innovative, original productions centred on themes of community and immigration, cultural sensitivity and anti-racism, and inclusion and diversity. VYT’s teen ensemble actors are coplaywrights and performers. Tapping into the groundwork of VYT’s previous one-act plays, including Identity (2013), Identity II (2014)—the sequel, with original music—is a collaborative teen ensemble exploring how to find, lose, keep, and be oneself within youth culture. Special thanks to the Shewan Foundation for their outstanding support. Van City Soul Quartet was formed in 2013 with the notion of combining classic, and rare soul and funk tunes with an outlet for original like-minded music. The band owes allegiance to the James Taylor Quartet, Quantic, SixToys, Booker T & The MGs, and Deep Purple. In 2014, the band recorded four tunes at Nimbus Studios: the original “Silver Shoes” plus three covers, including Otis Redding’s “That’s How Strong My Love Is” (now available through iTunes and other fine online music retailers). 15

Lee, author 4:00 pm Stacey Matson (Vancouver) A Year in the Life of a Total and Complete Genius (Scholastic Canada $14.99) In this fresh and funny story, Arthur Bean, a soon-to be rich and famous author, has set two goals for himself: to win the school writing contest and to win the heart of his secret crush, Kennedy. His life has had some major twists and turns lately, including the recent loss of his mother, but Arthur the Brilliant won’t let anything get in the way of his destiny. Stacey Matson recently completed her Master of Arts in children’s literature at the University of British Columbia. This is her first novel in a planned trilogy about Arthur Bean. She lives in Vancouver. Ages 9-12 Adopted by: UBC Continuing 4:20 pm Sarah Ellis (Vancouver) Studies Writing Centre Outside In (Groundwood Books $16.95) Lynn’s life is full—choir practice, school, shopping for the perfect jeans, and dealing with her free-spirited mother. Then one day her life is saved by a mysterious girl named Blossom, who introduces Lynn to her world and family, which is more bizarre, yet somehow more sane, than Lynn’s own. Outside In is a smart, engaging, and insightful novel. Sarah Ellis has won the Governor General’s Award and the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award. She teaches in the Master of Fine Arts program at Vermont College of Fine Arts. Ages 10-13 4:40 pm Rebecca Chaperon (Vancouver) Adopted by: Pulpfiction Books Eerie Dearies (Simply Read Books $19.95) Eerie Dearies is the perfect peculiar ABC, with 26 beautifully illustrated excuses for being absent from school: astral projection, gremlin attacks, and teleportation are just a few reasons. Faded and well-used book covers serve as compelling backgrounds for each of these delicately rendered acrylic paintings, creating an atmosphere akin to an old, dusty collection of darkly humorous myths. Born in England, Rebecca Chaperon began to call Vancouver home after graduating from Emily Carr University in 2002. Her work has exhibited across Canada and has been awarded a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. Chaperon’s paintings and illustrations often follow the thread of a heroine’s misadventure through an enchanted landscape. Ages 10+

The World Poetry Reading Series presents A Taste of China
The World Poetry Reading Series and its venues provide a voice to those who need to be heard. There are over 500 poets from 64 countries in the Vancouver area and around 3,000 worldwide. Join Elaine Woo and Yilin Wang as they host featured poets Laifong Leung and Synn Kune Loh. HOST (11:30 – 12:15): margaret reynolds, Association of Book Publishers of British Columbia 11:30 AM Elaine Woo (Vancouver) Cycling with the Dragon (Nightwood Editions $18.95) Elaine Woo’s debut poetry collection, Cycling with the Dragon, is a personal investigation of family, love, culture, and self. Woo’s poems champion the virtue of “smallness”—characters marginalized by society for their age or status (be they women, children, or ethnic minorities) struggle to overcome the limitations imposed upon them. Like tenacious seeds breaking through the earth to reach the sun, they ultimately find survival and inspiration in treasured authors and their words, the wilderness, and sometimes dreams and imagination. Elaine Woo is an award-winning poet, librettist, and nonfiction writer. Her first poetry collection, Cycling with the Dragon, will be released from Nightwood Editions in September 2014. 11:45 am Henry Rappaport (Vancouver) Loose to the World (Ronsdale Press $15.95) These poems lead the reader into a world that reveals a balancing act between the familiar and the mysterious. Some poems are narrative, some are imagistic meditations, while others are ironic pieces that edge into wisdom. Henry Rappaport makes humourous and truthful observations with a facility for language that is confident, relaxed, playful, and all his own. Henry Rappaport, the co-founder of Intermedia Press in Vancouver, grew up in Monticello, New York. He graduated from Syracuse University, where he won the Whiffin Prize for Poetry. Rappaport is the author of three previous collections of poems. He writes full-time in Vancouver, where he has lived since 1968. 12:00 pm Jane Munro (Vancouver) Adopted by: Anonymous Blue Sonoma (Brick Books $20.00) A wise and embodied collection of dreamscapes, sutras, and prayer poems from a writer at her peak. In Blue Sonoma, award-winning poet Jane Munro draws on her well-honed talents to address what T.S. Eliot called “the gifts reserved for age.” A beloved partner’s crossing into Alzheimer’s is at the heart of this book, and his “battered blue Sonoma” is an evocation of numerous other crossings: between empirical reportage and meditative apprehension, dreaming and wakefulness, and Eastern and Western poetic traditions. Jane Munro’s poetry has received the Bliss Carman Poetry Award and the Macmillan Prize for Poetry, and was nominated for the Pat Lowther Award. Blue Sonoma is Jane’s sixth collection. 26

12:45 pm Catherine Owen (Vancouver) Designated Mourner (ECW Press $18.95) Written as a collection of elegies for a deceased spouse, Designated Mourner plunges readers into a vortex of grief, pain, and loneliness. Catherine Owen vividly describes the deep well of grief that those who have lost loved ones to addiction must dig themselves out of. Almost painfully intimate, this stunning collection explores the intense hunger that brought Owen and her lover together and, ultimately, pulled them apart. Catherine Owen is the author of nine collections of poetry, including Frenzy, which won the Alberta Book Prize. Other collections have been nominated for the BC Book Prize, the ReLit, the CBC Literary Prize, and the George Ryga Award. 1:00 pm Phinder Dulai (Vancouver) dream/arteries (Talonbooks $16.95) In his third poetry collection, dream/arteries, Phinder Dulai connects 376 Sikh, Muslim, and Hindu passengers on the Japanese steamship Komagata Maru with other New World settler migrants who travelled on the same ship throughout its 36-year history. By drawing on ship records, nautical maps, and passenger manifests, Dulai demonstrates how the 1914 incident, in which the vessel was refused entry to Canada and forced to turn back to India, encapsulates a broader narrative of migration throughout the New World. Phinder Dulai is the author of dream/arteries, Ragas from the Periphery, and Basmati Brown. He is co-founder of the interdisciplinary contemporary arts group South of Fraser Inter-Arts Collective (SOFIA/c). host (1:15 – 2:15): Taryn Boyd, Touchwood Editions 1:15 pm Yvonne Blomer (Victoria) As If A Raven (Palimpsest Press $18.95) Yvonne Blomer explores birds and their taming through language— the Blackbird as human soul, the Pelican as atonement, the Ostrich as cowardice, and the Raven as trickster. She touches on mythology, biblical texts, and science to ask if poetry comes as close to damaging the wild things of the world as Audubon did in his collecting of birds to create paintings. Yvonne Blomer lives in Victoria, where she is the artistic director of the Planet Earth Poetry reading series and works as a poet, memoirist, and writing teacher. Her poems have been shortlisted for the CBC Literary Prizes, and her first collection of poetry was shortlisted for the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award in 2007.
Hop On The Bus The poetry readings will take place on the Poetry in Transit Bus, which will be on Homer Street this year.

Michael Kenyon (Pender Island) 1:30 pm Astatine (Brick Books $20.00) Astatine is an Italian girl who, like Dante’s Beatrice, haunts the narrator of Michael Kenyon’s incandescent fourth book of poetry. Named after a radioactive element whose isotopes endure halflives of mere seconds, she is simultaneously a disappearing and abiding presence. She cajoles and comforts, questions and points, and often leaves the poet puzzled, electrified, heart-broken, and wanting more. Michael Kenyon’s work has been shortlisted for many awards, including the Commonwealth Writers Prize, the SmithBooks/Books in Canada First Novel Award, and the Journey Prize. His novel, The Beautiful Children, won the 2010 ReLit Award. tr oe

1:45 pm Derrick Stacey Denholm (Burns Lake) Dead Salmon Dialectics (Caitlin Press $16.95) Drawing on scientific studies of salmon recycling in perhumid rainforests, Dead Salmon Dialectics follows the dark and often humorous trials of a young biologist at work in the wildest estuaries of the rainiest place on earth. Filled with thousands of rotting carcasses, swirls of phosphorescent algae, night-fishing bears, local sledneck debutantes, the marvel of raven song, and near misses by giant falling trees, Dead Salmon Dialectics is an interdisciplinary experiment for the senses and the synapses. Derrick Stacey Denholm lives and works in the forests of northern BC. Dead Salmon Dialectics won the Barry McKinnon Chapbook Award for 2010. 2:00 pm Janet Rogers (Victoria) Adopted by: Bryan Pike Peace in Duress (Talonbooks $16.95) Mohawk spoken-word artist Janet Rogers’ newest collection pulses with the rhythm of the drum and the beat of the heart. Poems drawing on the language of the earth and inflected with the outspoken vocality of activism address the crises of modern “land wars”—environmental destruction, territorial disputes, and resource depletion. This collection is confessional love, learned survival, and ardent resistance. It is unique poetry that wants to be spoken. Janet Rogers is a spoken-word media artist and radio host originally from the Six Nations band in southern Ontario. In 2012, she was selected as the City of Victoria’s third poet laureate for a three-year term ending November 30, 2014. host (2:15 – 3:15): george murray, poet 2:15 pm andrea bennett (Vancouver) Canoodlers (Nightwood Editions $18.95) The candid, direct poems of Canoodlers follow the growth and class leaps of a “townie tomboy.” They render the familiar unfamiliar and question how relationships function (or don’t) in contemporary suburban Canadian life. From family relations (“Dearly beloved, Don Cherry has better conversation skills than my stepfather, and my mother doesn’t love me anymore”) to individual encounters, Canoodlers is a personal study of contemporary consumerism, appropriating the language of marketing and pop culture, twisting and repositioning phrases that have become clichéd. andrea bennett, a graduate of the University of British Columbia’s Master of Fine Arts program in creative writing, contributing editor at Geist, and former editor at Adbusters, has been published in several magazines across North America. 2:30 pm Laura Farina (Vancouver) Some Talk Of Being Human (Mansfield Press $17.00) A charming, whimsical, and occasionally dark collection of poems, Some Talk Of Being Human is about entering the world of adulthood. Laura Farina started writing it at her first desk job, and completed it nearly a decade later. The poems take place in Ottawa, South Bend, Toronto, Banff, and Vancouver, and span three different romantic relationships. But these are not typical love poems. They’re interested in the small details—telephone calls, weather, half-full jars of mayo—that make up everyday life. Laura Farina grew up in Ottawa and gradually made her way west. Her first book of poetry, This Woman Alphabetical (Pedlar Press, 2005), won the Archibald Lampman Prize. LAURA FARINA poems

2:45 pm Dina Del Bucchia (Vancouver) Blind Items (Insomniac Press $16.95) Dina Del Bucchia takes celebrities very personally—maybe too personally. What would you do if you met Lindsay Lohan in a Walmart parking lot? James Franco in a thrift shop? The Olsen twins behind a dumpster? Blind Items puts you in contact with celebrities in ways you’ve always dreamed about. These hypermodern confessional poems are funny, strange, and very, very sexy. In this collection, Del Bucchia tears down the fourth wall of tabloid journalism with her teeth. Dina Del Bucchia writes—and does many other things—in Vancouver. She won the RBC Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers in 2012. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from the University of British Columbia. 3:00 pm Billeh Nickerson (Vancouver) Adopted by: Eponymous Artificial Cherry (Arsenal Pulp Press $14.95) Artificial Cherry heralds the return of Billeh Nickerson’s colourful wit and cheeky, sweet sensibilities. From Elvis Presley and glass eyes to phantom lovers and hockey haiku, you’re never quite sure where Nickerson will take you. Born in Halifax and raised in Langley, Billeh Nickerson is the author of several poetry collections. He is the coeditor of Seminal: The Anthology of Canada’s Gay Male Poets, and former writer-in-residence at Queen’s University in Kingston, ON, and Berton House in Dawson City, YT. Like all Donato Mancini’s work, it’s wired for explosive laughter. As with all his previous works, Mancini has created a book unlike anything he—or anyone else—has ever read. Donato Mancini is a writer, critic, and visual artist. His most recent books include You Must Work Harder to Write Poetry of Excellence (2012) and Buffet World (2010). He lives in Vancouver.

3:30 pm Jen Currin (Vancouver) Adopted by: International Web Express School (Coach House Books $17.95) At times a call to action and at others an intimate conversation between friends, Jen Currin’s sensual and surreal poems speak to the political upheavals and environmental catastrophes of our time. School is an instruction manual for igniting transformation through a collective effort of love and community. All things chapbook! Enjoy readings, discover exhibitors, and listen in on a panel of experts
wreckoning is a handmade, limited-edition chapbook and collaboration between writer Leah Horlick and visual artist Alison Roth Cooley. Interlaced with illustration, the long poem is a mythic narration of the sea, a witness to the changing seasons and the transformative effects of weather. Leah Horlick’s writing has appeared in So To Speak, GRAIN, and Poetry is Dead, to name a few. Her first poetry collection, Riot Lung, was shortlisted for a 2013 ReLit Award and Saskatchewan Book Award. Originally from Saskatoon, Horlick currently lives on unceded Coast Salish territories in Vancouver, where she co-curates REVERB, a queer and anti-oppressive reading series. Her next collection is forthcoming from Caitlin Press in 2015. Warren Dean Fulton is a serious poetry collector with a substantial accumulation of thousands of Canadian poetry titles. For the past 20 years he has been publishing chapbooks, broadsides, and ephemera through his micro-poetry empire, pooka press. Fulton lives with poet Catherine Owen in New Westminster, where they co-run Above & Beyond Productions. Fulton will be sharing selections from his chapbook series of pooka poetry pubcrawls: a chapbook resulting from entertaining and social literary outings and writing events, emerging from a mix of prompts and impromptu creations.
Surrey Sonnets is a chapbook of sonnets on perforated pages that are designed to be torn out and used as beer coasters. The sonnets themselves explore growing up in Surrey in the 1970s and 1980s. Kevin Spenst loves creating games, poems, educational curriculum, micro-fictions, new accents, and most of all chapbooks.
4:00 pM Chat About Chapbooks Come enjoy a dynamic conversation about all things chapbook! There will be plenty of things to learn during this unique panel discussion, featuring chapbook gurus Leah Horlick, Warren Dean Fulton, Kevin Spenst, Jennifer Zilm, and Heidi Greco, who will also be moderating.

Cap Art Vending Project
Words On Chapbooks
In 2008, Anne Stone put together the Cap Art Vending Project. She was inspired by Louis Rastelli’s Distroboto project in Montreal, where chapbooks were sold from cigarette machines. Stone wanted to do something similar in Vancouver, and when she began teaching creative writing, she decided to give it a try. Stone came across an old clown’s-head vending machine on Craigslist, and after some detailing, minor fixes, and the purchase of 1,000 mini-capsules, the machine was in full operation. In the last seven years, Capilano University’s creative writing students have contributed miniature chapbooks, broadsides, poems, and stories, selling for a nickel each! The vending machine resides at Capilano’s Writing Centre, but will be found at Word Vancouver on Sunday, September 28, in Words On Chapbooks (T9)!

HOST: Sylvia Skene, Executive Director,. Magazine Association of BC 11:00 AM Inside the Magazine Presented by Magazine Association of BC In our digital age, magazines continue to delight, inform, and inspire. That’s because they show colour, details, and texture in all their true brilliance, and their articles provide in-depth reporting and analysis. Because magazines are permanent evidence of passion, conveying an attitude and point of view, they bring together people with common interests—and have been doing so long before social media came along. How are magazines produced? How are stories chosen? Find out the answers to these questions and more. Brought to you by the Magazine Association of BC, working on behalf of our magazine publishers and professionals. HOST: Peter Babiak, Writer & Editorial Collective. Member for subterrain 11:40 Am Connor Doyle and Juliane Okot Bitek Presented by subTerrain “Under-City” is a poetry cycle about three suburban teenagers who can’t help but feel like contradictions. Connor Doyle is an author and poet from Surrey, BC, who has not stopped thinking about the word homunculus since he first heard it in a poem. “A Love Letter or Considering Reconciliation” is a brief mediation on what it is to live and work away from home but on a land that is also saturated with its own memories of loss and continued pain. This poem is dedicated to Juliane’s good friend Kasthuri Moodley who passed away in January 2013. Juliane Okot Bitek lives and works with her family in Vancouver, BC. HOST: Taryn Hubbard, member of the Room Magazine editorial board 12:20 Pm Ruth Daniell and Lucas Crawford Presented by Room Ruth Daniell is a writer, artist, and performer who teaches speech arts and writing at the Bolton Academy of Spoken Arts. (Nightwood Editions $19.95) Building on the success of the Journey Prize-shortlisted title story, the stories in How Does a Single Blade of Grass Thank the Sun? present an updated and whimsical new take on what it means to be Canadian. As a journalist, Doretta Lau covers arts and culture for a wide variety of publications. Her fiction and poetry have appeared in PRISM international, Ricepaper, and subTerrain, among many others.
C.P. Boyko (Vancouver) 11:15 AM Novelists (Biblioasis $19.95) Novelists: The soul of an age, certainly. Brilliant? Perhaps. Yet aren’t they also doddering, petulant, pedantic, knock-kneed, skittish, and thunderingly insecure—resentful, awkward, annoying—demanding, deluded, and vexingly indifferent to reality? New from short-fiction devotée C.P. Boyko, Novelists is a comedy of manners (and manuscripts), rivalling Vanity Fair for its satirical wit…though not, mercifully, for its length. C.P. Boyko lives and writes in Vancouver.

Downstairs in the Moat Suburbia Exhibitions Presented by Sad Mag
It is no surprise that Vancouver draws throngs of artists, writers, and dreamers to its bosom, making Vancouver one of the most prestigious creative hubs in North America. As honorary Vancouverites, we make the assumption that all things innovative, creative, and noteworthy can easily be found lurking within our city limits, in Chinatown alleyways and in corners of East Vancouver.
But who’s to say that the city boundary forms an invisible border between the brilliant and the banal? With the scarcity of affordable housing and available studio space, many of our talented entrepreneurs and artists in Western Canada are establishing themselves in Yale, BC, instead of Yaletown, Robert’s Creek instead of False Creek, and Richmond instead of Richards Street. Within the Suburbia Exhibition, Sad Mag aims to bring Vancouver into the studios and neighbourhoods of artists and writers who are fostering creative communities outside the city limits. From Greendale to the Gulf Islands, this exhibition aims to give voice (and praise) to artists who have opted out of an urban metropolis in favour of cities not made of glass.
