Enjoy readings by emerging and established authors, professional development workshops and panels, a diverse range of exhibitors, and fun hands-on activities for kids. WELCOME The Staff and Board of Word Vancouver welcome you to the 24th annual festival: a free, family-friendly, five-day celebration of literature. This year’s festival promises to be an engaging, fun, stimulating, and informative time. We’re pleased to be working with our partner sites again this year to offer readings and workshops in the four days leading up to the main festival day on Sunday, September 30 at the downtown Vancouver Public Library. Join us on Wednesday, September 26 at Banyen Books & Sound where Ken Klonsky will be on hand for a reading and signing of the award winning book Freeing David McCallum: The Last Miracle of Rubin “Hurricane” Carter. On Thursday, September 27 we are happy to bring Al Rempel, Kim Clark, and Angela Rebec to the Twisted Poets Stage for an evening of poetic wonder hosted by Pandora’s Collective. On Friday, September 28 it will be hard to choose between the talk on Opening New Frontiers: Art of SelfPublishing & Traditional Publishing with William Tham, Vincent Ternida, and Cynda Yeasting at The Historic Joy Kogawa House or Telling Story through Image with Cynthia Nugent, Dan Bar-El, Michael Lagacé, and Kathryn Shoemaker at Christianne’s Lyceum. On Saturday, September 29 we are once again happy to partner with Carnegie Community Centre to bring you free workshops. Whether you want to learn to perform your work with Hal Wake, experience Writing to Heal with Angela Carroll Wallace, or try Journal Writing with Leanne Boschman, you will walk away richer for dropping in. On Sunday September 30 we invite you into the new Speakers Salon in Blenz. In this intimate setting hear Charlie Smith, editor of The Georgia Straight, discuss what they look for in freelance writing. Ask questions of William Tham, Senior Editor of Ricepaper or BeatRoute Editor Yasmine Shemesh as they each discuss the digital age from different perspectives. Cupe 391 brings you some of their own member authors: Danielle LaFrance, Shireen Clark, and Jane Whittingham. Vancouver’s Poet Laureates will open our Sunrise Suite Poetry Stage. Speaking of poetry, some of our favourites are back with readings from Translink poets Susan Alexander, Emily Nilsen, David Zieroth, Leef Evans, Linda Crosfield, and Aidan Chafe. While the poetry won’t be happening on the bus this year, the Translink poetry bus will still be parked on Robson for you to climb onboard, read some poems, and experience the feel of letting your imagination fill with the extraordinary talent we have all around us in our city. Take in the new Community Stage where you can get a real taste of the literary make-up of Vancouver with readings from Community Groups, Universities, and Literary Arts Organizations. And don’t forget our exhibitors’ tents where you can engage with publishers and writing programs up close, ask questions and get information. We also have two new interactive experiences. The Imprint are glad to bring us the Lemonade Stand; come and quench your thirst while sipping from a from a cup with lines written on the spot. Or go on a QR code scavenger hunt to win prizes when you scan the voices of eight poets from around the festival. Don’t miss the children’s area with Christianne’s Lyceum! Make your children smile while they listen to children’s authors read. Help us keep the festival free by visiting our Silent Auction to place bids on some amazing items donated by our generous supporters, become a Member of the Festival by donating $2 and filling out our brief survey to be entered to win a library of our authors’ books, or just consider making a donation to the festival.
