Welcome Welcome from the Board The Staff and Board of Word Vancouver welcome you to the 25th annual festival: a free, family-friendly, five-day celebration of literature. This year marks the 25th Anniversary of Word Vancouver and I’m so proud of everything we’ve accomplished over the years. We’ve undergone some major changes, evolved from being a one-day Word on the Street festival to a five-day Word Vancouver festival. We’ve maintained our promise to always be free and we’re becoming more family-friendly every year. This year I’m particularly excited with the addition of our Indigenous Stage, programmed by our Guest Indigenous Curator Russell Wallace. I’m also thrilled to welcome back the Storytelling With Drag Queens Foundation, which was one of our most popular events last year. We have something for everyone in our festival - books for all ages, authors writing in all genres, panels on crime writing, cooking, poetry, a magazine stage, dozens of exhibitors to visit, and so much more. Thanks to everyone for your continued support of our festival as we turn 25! Mary-Ann Yazedjian Board President
Welcome from the Executive Director Twenty-five years of Word Vancouver is amazing. This has been an exciting prospect for me. To honour what has been done in the past, with an eye to the future is the best place to be. Vancouver has grown into an international city with a variety of crosscultural needs, stirring experiences and unique problems. All of these can be found documented in a magazine article, a poem in a literary journal, a memoir or historical folio or countless fictional books. Vancouver and British Columbia now have it all, chronicled by some of the most profound writers this country has seen. We are proud to present the powerful voices that reside amongst us, have grown up with us and have flourished into this wonderfully diverse mix. We hope you enjoy it. We welcome you all. Bonnie Nish Executive Director
An Annual Celebration Word Vancouver is produced by the non-profit charitable organization the Vancouver Book and Magazine Fair Society. The mandate of the society is to foster an awareness and appreciation of the printed word in our culture, promote the importance of literacy in the lives of Canadians and involve the residents of Vancouver in an annual celebration of writing and reading. Donations to the Society can be made on site or online, or mailed to our office: 5505 Main Street, Vancouver, V5W 2S3. All donations help keep the festival free and accessible to all. Tax receipts are available for donations of $20 or more. If you would like to volunteer or be a sponsor for the 2020 festival, please contact us at wordvancouver.ca.
4 Celebrating 25 Years of Word Vancouver
Welcome from the Honourable Lisa Beare Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture On behalf of Premier John Horgan and the Government of British Columbia, I am delighted to welcome you to Word Vancouver 2019. Word Vancouver is Western Canada’s largest free celebration of literacy and reading. For 25 years, this literary festival has promoted Canadian authors and books by filling the streets of Vancouver with exhibits, activities and performances. Word Vancouver plays an important role in promoting and sustaining the vibrancy, inclusivity and accessibility of the city by creating a community where everyone is welcome to engage and connect over their shared love of the written word. B.C. is home to the second largest English language book publishing sector in Canada and our books and magazines are enjoyed by millions of readers across the world. It is a dynamic and vibrant creative sector that is well worth celebrating. Our government is proud to support Word Vancouver, through Creative BC, ensuring that readers and writers alike can enjoy all that this festival has to offer. Congratulations to the many organizers, supporters and volunteers who have made Word Vancouver possible over the past 25 years and thank you for sharing this wonderful event with people in B.C. 3:00pm Still/ed Here - A Transmedia Poetry Project Augmented Reality (AR) installation and public participation, presented by Pandora’s Collective and Word Vancouver: Join Natasha Boškić and Mary McDonald in conversation about collaboration and co-creation of poetry and media. Still/ed Here is a multiplicity of the narratives of Canada about displacement and healing, created by community participation. This project draws from personal narratives on the experience of loss or abandonment of home and land due to various reasons: war, conflict, forced migration, poverty. The anchor of the exhibit Still/ed Here, is On the Margin of History -- a collection of still/ hyperphoto fragments of the voices of two poets, Natasha Boškić (Vancouver) and Mohamad Kebbewar (Syria), contained within the poetry film that is projected within the installation, designed and created by mulitimedia artist, Mary McDonald, invoking reflection on displacement of people through time.
