Dorking Arts
Why not enjoy a night at one of the great theatres spotted around Dorking!
Dorking Halls Serving the community for more than 85 years. The venue was designed to host a range of community events. It comprised three Halls: the Masonic, the Martineau and the impressive Grand; all of which remain today. The Grand can seat 900 people, and its original stage could accommodate 300 singers and a full orchestra. The acoustics were exceptional and there was also a fully sprung dance floor. This makes many aspects of theatrical work accessible to all. Based in a building which was only ever supposed to provide temporary barracks for the Canadian Army in WWII does provide challenges in terms of dilapidations and the staging of productions. Thankfully, due to a dedicated team of backstagers, refurbishment work is ongoing and work in the last year included updating the dressing rooms and rebuilding the off-stage area to compliment the ‘revolving’ stage platform built in 2009. 8-10 Reigate Rd, Dorking RH4 1SG. www.ddos.org.uk/ The Leatherhead Theatre The theatre is managed of a charitable trust set up by local people who are passionate about enabling and encouraging both personal and community transformation through the arts.
