Interview: MK Interior Design
Interview with interior design expert Marina Klavina
How did you become an interior designer? Although I always had keen interest in design and property development, my first career was in luxury hospitality sales. I was working for Dorchester Collection and represented some of the most luxurious and iconic hotels in the world. I travelled a lot and stayed in the most beautiful properties. My priorities changed when I moved from London to Sussex with my partner. We started a family and I didn’t want to be away from him and our sons anymore. So following my dreams I qualified as an Interior Designer from KLC School of Design, and enjoyed working for the award winning interior design companies before opening MK Design Studio.
What is your interior design style? I pride myself on not being a cookie cutter, I approach every project individually and create unique design that works best for the owners and each particular property
My projects range from 16th century farm houses to new-builds, but I aim to create an elegant and effortless interiors perfect for relaxed country living.
Can you describe the interior design service MK Design Studio offers? Services range from one-off bespoke interior consultations, to full interior design package which starts with no obligation face-to-face or online meeting, where we establish key objectives and priorities for the project. After this meeting a proposal is prepared and if accepted we move on to the next stage – creating a concept that will reflect the style, look and feel of your home. This comes in form of digital concepts, mood boards, sample displays as well as floorplans with proposed furniture layout. Based on the concept I specify colours and finishes, source furniture, lighting and accessories. I design soft furnishings, window treatments, bespoke cabinetry and furniture. Once the costings for the project are approved and signed off, I coordinate purchasing process and installation of the whole scheme.
Do you have any favourite projects you worked on? I enjoy every project and challenge, however my favourite houses are characterful country houses full of old beams and quirky features, where no line is straight. Designing window treatments and bespoke cabinetry is not easy but I do like a challenge!
What is your favourite part of the job? I love working with fabrics, colours and textures, so creating unique window treatments, cushions, bespoke upholstery with beautiful details is definitely something that I enjoy the most.
