The Studio | Crafted Modern At Workshop/APD, an award-winning multidisciplinary design and architecture firm, each project is uniquely defined by a sense of place and purpose and a desire to enhance the user’s experience through exceptional design. Led by founding principals Andrew Kotchen and Matt Berman and principal Thomas Zoli, a diverse, collaborative team of architects, interior designers and product designers leverages vast and highly varied experiences to solve complex design challenges, resulting in spaces that are exceptionally beautiful and accessible. From sleek penthouses and seaside retreats to luxury residential developments and ground breaking hotels and restaurants, Workshop/APD’s aesthetic is timelessly modern but site-specific, unbound by project type or a

singular style. We bring texture, materiality, and contrast to modern spaces, pursuing unique materials with a worked hand and creating one-of-a-kind furnishings. Through a unique, vertically-integrated service offering that spans all aspects of architecture, interior design and product design, Workshop/APD can own every step of the process from inception to completion. We are committed to designing places that celebrate a project’s location and history, demonstrating a profound respect for the physical and contextual environment in which projects are realized and extending the experience beyond the structure to merge landscape, neighborhood and architecture and furnishings in a synergistic unit.

Crafted Modern We embrace technology and celebrate craft, bringing materiality and contrast to luxurious modern spaces. “Modern” underscores an innovative, forward thinking approach. “Craft” is an open-minded exploration of the ways that materials and connections can be elevated by transformation and continue to evolve over time. Finished, refined, textured, honed, engineered, joined and detailed: in revealing the hand of the maker we breathe life into the materials of our trade. Subtle variations created by man, machine, time or weather make each project and space unique. There is beauty in so-called “imperfections”, which imbue a decorative, tactile quality and invite investigation and touch, activating a relationship between a space and its inhabitants. This is what gives modern design a soul.

PROCESS
Architecture | Interior Architecture | Interior Design | Product Our architects, interior designers, product designers and brand experts can own every step of the process – in projects at every scale – from inception to completion. In a hands-on, highly collaborative environment, we work seamlessly to realize complex projects with passion and skill, working across luxury residential, high-end development, and hospitality typologies. Through program, massing, and form studies we find and build upon a site’s best attributes, framing a project narrative that informs all future design decisions. We understand how scale relates to interior architecture, exploring how people will interact in each
space and how the interior selections will take form from this narrative. We think of each furnishing, fitting, fabric, and finish as an extension of its surroundings, creating interesting tension or subtly enhancing the architecture. We are obsessed with craft and construction, immersing ourselves in each detail’s endless options, studying the trade and its techniques, and exploring a material’s tactile qualities. We are committed to constantly honing and elevating our craft, and understand that architecture and design are a responsibility, with lasting effects on our clients and the greater community.

COMMERCIAL ARCHITECTURE Workshop/APD has leveraged two decades of success in the high-end residential category to build an awardwinning commercial practice. Our multidisciplinary team translates the same passion for client experience – with a focus on craft, context, and indoor-outdoor connectivity –to commercial work, including multi-family residential developments, offices, hotels, restaurants, community and institutional projects across North America. We extend the experience beyond the structure to merge landscape, neighborhood, architecture, and interiors in a beautiful, synergistic unit.
