Digital Power Takes Flight! With Daher’s New High-End TBM 960 Very Fast Turboprop Aircraft Daher explains how the latest TBM very fast turboprop aircraft delivers the full benefits of digital power. A few weeks after the official announcement of the TBM 960 at Sun ’n’ Fun Expo in Florida, Daher started the deliveries for its latest very fast turboprop aircraft version – the TBM 960 – which brings the advantages of digital power for enhanced operational safety and efficiency, improved aviation sustainability, facilitated maintenance and increased cabin comfort. The first TBM 960 was received on the eve of the AERO Friedrichshafen show by a German-based businessman, who will operate it for corporate and private trips – primarily in Europe. The unnamed customer, who previously owned a nonpressurised single-engine piston aircraft, currently is completing instrument training and will fly with his flight instructor as a mentor pilot to gain experience in the TBM 960. Factors that influenced his acquisition decision included the flight instructor’s recommendation, the aircraft’s cost/performance ratio, and the ability to operate from shorter-length airport runways. “I’ve always been impressed by the TBM aircraft family’s performance, along with its level of safety and the systems – especially the HomeSafe emergency autoland,” he explained. “There are less expensive airplanes on the market, but none offers so many systems. And I was extremely pleased to learn that I’m the first customer to take delivery of the new TBM 960.” The No.1-delivered TBM 960 was sold by Rheinland Air Service, the Daher Kodiak and TBM distributor and service centre for Germany and Austria. 2 GA BUYER EUROPE JUNE 2022

EASA & FAA Certified Certification of the TBM 960 was issued on 2nd March 2022 by EASA (the European Union Aviation Safety Agency), with certification by the U.S. FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) currently underway. “We thank our customer for his confidence in the TBM and the appreciation of our services,” stated Nicolas Chabbert, Senior Vice President of Daher’s Aircraft Division. “His acquisition confirms that the TBM 960’s efficiency and innovative safety systems match the expectations of our European customers at a time of sustainable development issues and stringent regulations.” The TBM 960 retains many features of the highly successful TBM 940, becoming the new high-end version in Daher’s TBM 900-series airplane family. These features include Garmin’s G3000 integrated flight deck that integrates the following TBM e-copilot functions: icing protection, flight envelope monitoring through the Electronic Stability and Protection (ESP) and the Under-speed Protection (USP) systems, the Emergency Descent Mode (EDM) function; as well as HomeSafe. Its primary differences are Pratt & Whitney Canada’s PT6E-66XT turboprop engine, combined with the Hartzell Propeller five-blade Raptor composite propeller and hub, which are linked to a dual-channel digital Engine and Propeller Electronic Control System (EPECS). Offering the TBM 900-series’ recognised performance capabilities, the TBM 960’s digital control also enables pilots to fly with more precise power settings. At

Daher’s recommended cruise setting of 308 kts, the fuel consumption is only 57 US gallons per hour, which is a 10% fuel saving compared to the maximum cruise setting.

More Digital At the heart of the TBM 960 is the “intelligent” P&WC PT6E-66XT powerplant and Hartzell Propeller’s five-blade Raptor composite propeller, both of which are linked to the dual-channel digital Engine and Propeller Electronic Control System (EPECS). With the EPECS, the PT6E-66XT’s start-up is fully automated after a single-switch activation. Using this FADEC-type functionality, the power lever is an ethrottle, using a single forward position from takeoff to landing – with the EPECS optimising powerplant performance throughout the flight envelope reducing pilot workload by integrating all functions and protecting the engine’s life. Analysis of engine parameters is driven by 100-plus smart data inputs.

Raptor Propeller The Raptor propeller and its hub are fully integrated into the propulsion system. It is specifically designed to reduce overall weight and improve the TBM 960’s takeoff distance, climb and cruise speed. Turning at 1,925 rpm during maximum power output, the Raptor contributes to limit noise and vibration. Its sound level during takeoff is just 76.4 decibels, meeting the most stringent international noise standards.

G3000 Flight Deck With its G3000 integrated flight deck, the TBM 960 retains Daher’s e-copilot concentration of technological innovation and safety systems in the TBM, which can be compared to an ‘electronic copilot’. This includes an icing protection system, flight envelope monitoring through the Electronic Stability and Protection (ESP) and the Under-speed Protection (USP) systems, the Emergency Descent Mode (EDM) function, as well as the ‘HomeSafe’ emergency autoland system.

Doppler Weather Radar New to the TBM 960 is the Garmin GWX 8000 Doppler weather radar with advanced surveillance features such as lightning and hail prediction, turbulence detection, zero blind range for close-in returns, and ground clutter suppression. The TBM 960 also is the first application of Garmin’s nextgeneration data transmitter for automatic database upload and interconnection with mobile devices.

TBM 960 IN FIGURES

The Prestige Cabin The TBM 960’s Prestige cabin extends Daher’s use of digital power inside the aircraft, featuring an all-new environmental control system produced by Enviro Systems, LED ambience strip lighting integrated into both sides of the overhead ceiling panel, and electronically-dimmable windows – all controlled by a Passenger Comfort Display (PCD). Enhancements in the cabin’s style and comfort also include new ergonomically enhanced seats, USB-A and USB-C power plugs, individual cupholders and headset hangers for each occupant. As its predecessors since the TBM 850 model year 2012, the cabin offers quick-change configuration possibilities: club or commuter seating, the removal of the two rear seats for more luggage space or the installation of a lavatory compartment, or the addition of a large storage cabinet. For the TBM 960, a fifth factory standard TBM paint scheme – called Sirocco, based on the creativity of French designer Alexandre Echasseriau – has been added to the aircraft’s style customisation possibilities. With the new aircraft’s launch, Daher’s TBM family is now offered in two versions: the TBM 960 and TBM 910. As of January 1, 2022, a total of 1,070 TBM aircraft and 300 Kodiaks had been delivered to international owners and operators, and the global fleet has now accumulated some 2.2 million flight hours.

Given Daher’s close relationship with Pratt & Whitney Canada over the last three decades, it should come as little surprise that the world-leading turboprop engine OEM was chosen to power the new TBM 960 single-engine turboprop, announced at the recent Sun ‘n Fun Expo in Lakeland, Florida. In doing so, Pratt & Whitney Canada expands its PT6 E-Series engine family with the introduction of the new, purpose-built PT6E-66XT powerplant. When the PT6 E-Series was launched back in 2019 [Pilatus being the launch customer, to power its new PC-12 NGX model] the PT6E-67XP became the first turboprop engine in General Aviation to offer a dual-channel integrated electronic propeller and engine control system, which the company claimed at the time pushed innovation to a new level. Now, “The introduction of the PT6E-66XT engine reaffirms our continued commitment to innovation and our desire to proactively bring solutions to our customers,” said Nicholas Kanellias, Vice President, General Aviation, Pratt & Whitney Canada. “The PT6E-66XT engine, driven by more than 100 digital data inputs, offers the optimal combination of precision, performance and efficiency for an elevated and simplified flying experience.”

Simplified Flying According to both Pratt & Whitney Canada and Daher, the PT6E66XT engine offers an enhanced, easier pilot experience. “With its PT6E-66XT version, the Pratt & Whitney Canada team has [provided] digital power to our TBM 960…, making it even easier to operate,” said Nicolas Chabbert, Senior Vice President of Daher’s Aircraft Division.

expect to see savings in both fuel costs and, ultimately, carbon emissions. “Operated at Daher’s recommended cruise setting of 308kts, TBM 960 operators will see a ten percent fuel economy compared to maximum cruise setting, for more sustainable operations,” a Pratt & Whitney Canada spokesperson told GA Buyer Europe. Ultimately, the intelligence behind the control system uses the data to deliver precise, constant engine performance at every altitude and every temperature on each flight. Other benefits include increased engine take-off and climb power (+45 SHP mechanical horsepower) and increased thermodynamic power (up to four percent at International Standard Atmosphere conditions).

Data Collection & Transmission The PT6E-66XT is also digitally connected through its Data Collection and Transmission Unit (DCTU), making full-flight engine data accessible on multiple platforms, including mobile devices. Once the aircraft lands, engine flight data can be wirelessly downloaded, providing operators and maintainers with insights into engine performance and health. The overall goal of the PT6E-66XT engine’s improved design features and digital capabilities is to increase the availability of the aircraft to owners and operators. The electronic control system removes hardware from the engine, resulting in a combined 40 percent reduction in scheduled maintenance – and TBO intervals have subsequently been increased from 3,500 to 5,000 hours.

The Future of the PT6 E Series?

The digitally enabled single lever simplifies engine operation, allowing for true precision-controlled auto-throttle, supporting a more intuitive way of flying, from engine start to propeller and engine control, which ultimately reduces operation and pilot workload.

Asked where next for the PT6 E Series engine family, Pratt & Whitney Canada said that will ultimately be led by its customers. “We will continue to listen to our customers’ needs and monitor engine trends, while investing in the development and application of new technology,” the company spokesperson said.

The engine control system is designed to provide a consistent start every time. It constantly reviews and processes all the engine (as well as many aircraft) parameters, making fine adjustments to fuel flow and propeller blade angle to deliver optimal power and efficiency during all phases of flight.

“We’re proud to have launched the second PT6E engine model of our PT6 E-Series engine family. The depth of P&WC's experience in the industry combined with the flexibility of the PT6 engine architecture enables us to bring our customers the technology and services they need, when they need it.”

And with the digital intelligence behind the PT6E-66XT engine optimising engine power, speed and fuel burn, operators can

Garmin Offers TXi EIS for Select Beechcraft King Air 200s

TXi EIS display can further modernise King Air 200 series cockpit. Garmin now provides for the addition of a TXi Engine Indication System (EIS) display for Beechcraft King Air 200 aircraft, adding features like engine timers, exceedance recordings, dynamic engine indications, as well as wireless data logging. These features, together, can reduce pilot workload, improve engine efficiency and reduce maintenance costs. The King Air 200 certification builds on Garmin’s full portfolio of EIS solutions, which span from standalone options like the GI 275 EIS for piston single engines to the latest TXi EIS solution for twin turboprops. The certification covers models with PT6A41 and -42 engines and retrofitted PT6A-42, -52 and -61 STCs (dedicated GDU 700P is required). According to Garmin, “King Air 200 series owners and operators can now replace aging and costly-to-replace EIS gauges with a modernised display and view EIS information on a dedicated seven-inch TXi flight display in portrait mode. ‘This upgrade simplifies the cockpit and allows pilots to read and analyse critical engine and fuel parameters more clearly. When using multiple TXi displays, pilots can also benefit from display backup capability to help prevent the loss of PFD or EIS information during a single-display failure.”

they need to mitigate the exceedance. If the time-based limit is exceeded, the timer and gauge limits begin flashing and the pilot receives a notification that an exceedance has been recorded. Simultaneously, the TXi EIS system automatically logs a variety of information, including the parameter that was exceeded, duration, highest value that was recorded, time, date and more. The pilot can then review the logged data and share it with maintenance professionals for post-flight analysis.

Fuel Computer Pilots can more precisely monitor fuel calculations with TXi EIS, which includes an integrated fuel computer. After making a fuel stop, pilots can enter the fuel data within TXi EIS by selecting ‘full fuel’ or by adding a specified amount in pounds, gallons, litres or kilograms. When airborne, the system monitors fuel flow and GPS information to estimate fuel range, endurance and how much fuel is expected to be available at the destination airport.

Clearer and Smarter

To assist with tracking maintenance activities, controlling operating costs and analyzing overall engine health, built-in engine data logging is included with TXi EIS. Aircraft performance, engine data and any exceedances that are recorded during a flight are automatically stored on an SD card (sold separately) in the display.

All TXi EIS gauge indications display real-time turbine engine information using distinct colours, bands and radials to clearly depict normal operating ranges as well as limitations so pilots can more easily interpret engine data at a glance. Additional standard gauges include oil pressure and temperature as well as fuel flow and electrical system status.

When the TXi EIS display is paired with the Flight Stream 510 wireless gateway, information is wirelessly transferred and stored within the Garmin Pilot app and automatically uploaded to the flyGarmin website. Engine and flight cycles are also recorded to help identify aircraft systems that depend on those limits, such as pressurisation systems and other life-limited parts.

Utilising gauge limit timers, TXi EIS helps pilots to maintain the engine within its allowed limits to avoid engine exceedances and, as a result, costly maintenance procedures. For example, once a preconfigured limit is exceeded, a countdown timer is displayed alongside the engine gauge. This timer is an indication to the pilot that

The Beechcraft King Air 200 is the latest addition to the growing list of approved turbine aircraft for TXi EIS, which includes: the Cessna 208/208B, Cessna 425, Cheyenne I & II, Daher TBM 700/850, King Air 90, Pilatus PC-12/47, and the Piper PA-46-310SP/350P JetPROP single-engine turbo/turboprop aircraft.

BLACKHAWK ENGINEERING AND THE COMPANY'S TEST-BED AIRCRAFT AT BLACKHAWK HEADQUARTERS IN WACO, TEXAS.

Blackhawk Aerospace Offers New PC-12 Engine Upgrade Blackhawk Aerospace has started Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification flight testing for its new Pilatus PC-12 XP67P Engine+ Upgrade programme. The new upgrade replaces the stock Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) PT6A-67B engine with a higher-powered and more efficient PT6A-67P model. FAA Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval is expected early in 2023 with EASA certification following shortly thereafter.

Maintaining Power, Higher The XP67P engine technology utilises improved metallurgy which allows a higher Internal Turbine Temperature (ITT) limitation of 850°C compared to the stock -67B’s 800°C limitation for takeoff. More impressive still, maximum continuous ITT for climb and cruise is 760°C for the -67B and 820°C for the XP67P. Further, the PT6A-67P is a 1200 shaft horsepower (SHP) engine that produces 142 more thermodynamic horsepower than the stock -67B. The combination of the higher ITT and increased thermodynamic horsepower produced by the XP67P engine enables operators to utilise full torque to more efficient cruising altitudes. On an ISA day, the stock -67B starts losing power at 15,000 feet, whereas the XP67P can maintain full power to Flight Level 250 (around 25,000 feet).

“Blackhawk is excited to kick off certification testing for the XP67P programme and bring the conversion one step closer to reality for PC-12 operators,” said Jim Allmon, Blackhawk’s President & CEO. “This is a new market for us that fits naturally into our existing roster of aircraft, and we look forward to delivering this upgrade to Pilatus operators soon.”

Upgrade Offer The PC-12 is a very popular aircraft with more than 1,700 in operation, making it the second largest single-engine turboprop market behind the Cessna Caravan. With more than 600 of the PC-12s eligible for the XP67P upgrade, many of the aircraft in the addressable market are at, or close to, an overhaul event. This is the optimum opportunity to upgrade to a new engine, bringing these early model aircraft up to PC-12 NG factory standards. Further, operators will receive favourable core engine credit of $95 per hour for time remaining to the factory TBO, if upgrading before overhaul. Blackhawk’s STC will include a factory-new P&WC PT6A-67P engine and will be approved with the existing Hartzell four-blade aluminium propeller to minimise the retail cost. Blackhawk plans to certify additional propeller options in the future to provide operators modularity in the upgrade package.

Tecnam.qxp_GA 09/05/2022 10:10 Page 1

AERO Friedrichshafen Success Sees 85 Tecnams Ordered At this year’s event on Lake Constance, Tecnam had a large exhibit with examples of all its models and many of its dealers from around the world — resulting in an order tally of 85 aircraft at the end of the show, with perhaps more to come. The P-MENTOR, the IFR two-seater which made its first appearance this year, was one of the best sellers in terms of numbers, followed by the P2010 Tdi, also in the super luxury “Gran Lusso” version, which was another premiere of the show. The Tecnam sales network, representing more than 65 countries, hosted an incredible number of visitors and customers at Tecnam’s booth, one of the biggest at AERO.

The P-Mentor aircraft is a fully IFR-capable two-seat trainer with low fuel consumption and emissions, certified to EASA CS-23 requirements.

Customers visiting the Tecnam booth appreciated the entire line of Tecnam models starting with the iconic P92 — here a MkII version with composite fuselage and metal wings. Also at the booth there was the Sierra MkII with new interior improvements; the P2008JC the high-wing favourite for flight schools; and the new P-Mentor, the innovative IFR two-seater which is Part 23 Certified. For delivery to Mermoz Academy in France was a P2006T, the smartest twin-engine trainer, and displaying absolute luxury was the P2010 Gran Lusso powered by a CD-170 Continental Engine.

“Mentor: an experienced and trusted

A corner of the booth was dedicated to the “Soar Greener” manifesto, explaining how Tecnam is contributing to a “green” future for aviation.

About the P-Mentor:

The P-Mentor redefines the level of training that is possible with light GA aircraft. With the Type Certificate issued on 7th April 2022, the aircraft was showcased for its worldwide premiere at AERO Friedrichshafen, 27-30 April.

person you rely on to give you advice and guidance, especially in your career.”

Dominating the display was the P2012 Traveller, the most versatile platform for short-haul operations, including passenger, cargo, medevac and parachute variants.

With these words in mind Tecnam started the P-Mentor programme: a simple and sustainable solution to guide student pilots from their first flight up to Instrument Rating, all in one two-seater single piston aircraft: IFR; PBN, RNAV; Variable Pitch, Autopilot, Simulated Retractable Gear Control; BRS.

The P2010 parallel hybrid H3PS was displayed at Rolls-Royce’s booth and a P2010 TDI at Continental Engines’ booth.

The P-Mentor is the ultimate synthesis of Tecnam’s leadership, knowledge, and experience in solutions for flight training organisations and private customers.

Tecnam Managing Director Giovanni Pascale commented: “We are delighted to see how the market is following Tecnam’s vision of aviation. Many customers are replacing their aging fleets with new, modern, sustainable solutions. Private customers are demanding this new level of luxury that Tecnam can offer. To be successful in aviation you have to always be on the latest edge of innovation and in this way, we are shaping a new future for aviation.”

The P-Mentor allows complete PPL, IR and UPRT training, with approved PBN/RNAV as well as AFCS: the entire training syllabus with unprecedented fuel consumption and emissions, further enhancing the renowned profitability of the Tecnam-made fleet.

“We are thrilled to have such a terrific number of visitors and sales. Aviators appreciate the design, wide choice of models, interiors and the avionics. This impressive number of sales comes from the hard work, teamwork, the investments and choices we have made in the past and from continuous listening to our customers,” said Tecnam Chief Sales Officer, Walter Da Costa. 16 PISTON BUYER EUROPE JUNE 2022

For the first time ever, the extremely fuel efficient and lowemissions Rotax 912iSc is at the heart of a fully IFR-approved aircraft, coupled with an MT constant-speed propeller.

www.tecnam.com

The all-new wing, specially designed for the P-Mentor, features a tapered planform with laminar flow aerofoil and mixed structure — light alloy for spars and wing box, CFRP for the one-piece leading edge. Its design allowed the P-Mentor to pass the latest CS-23 requirements for low speed and stall characteristics without ballistic recovery system being essential part of the aircraft configuration. BRS is approved and available as an option for customers who require this additional safety add-on. An integral fuel tank is located behind the main spar and offers 130 litres (34 US Gallons) and more than nine hours endurance. The cockpit features the Garmin G3X glass cockpit, with Garmin GI275 as back-up instrument and multiple configurations to allow PBN/RNAV as well as GFCTM 500 autopilot training. A simulated retractable gear control is available as an option. Besides its avionics, the P-Mentor sports Tecnam’s signature Italian style with the clean and sleek lines, interiors shaped around a large cabin, modern seats and superior visibility. Tecnam’s commitment towards sustainable aviation is a reality today: flight training organisations choosing Tecnam as their single and twin-engine aircraft fleet supplier can save up to 10 tons of CO2 for every graduated commercial pilot. P-Mentor is the IFR approved aircraft with the lowest fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, with up to 60 percent of emissions reduction when compared with IFR competitors. A number of Training Organisations already pre-ordered the P-Mentor, “confirming the great benefits of this new design.” “We are delighted to present the P-Mentor today. I am sure this new design will revitalise the trainer market, helping many flight schools to remain competitive and profitable and making new student pilots happier and more proficient. Real sustainability, fuel economy and profitability start here,” said Tecnam Managing Director, Giovanni Pascale. Tecnam CEO, Paolo Pascale added: “When I see a new Type Certificate with this model’s name, I think of my father and my uncle, Professor Luigi Pascale – the men who started this adventure. It also reminds me of all our collaborators and customers that brought us here today – our Mentors.”

AEROEXPOUK IS CANCELLED FOR THIS YEAR DUE TO THE SUDDEN UNAVAILABILITY OF OUR ALLOCATED EXHIBITION (HANGAR) SPACE. AS A RESULT WE ARE NOT WILLING TO RUN AN EVENT WHICH FAILS TO MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR EXHIBITORS AND VISITORS. WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO BRINGING THE GENERAL AVIATION COMMUNITY TOGETHER IN 2023, AND FURTHER NEWS WILL BE AVAILABLE SOON.

AeroExpo to Incorporate a Pre-Owned Aircraft Park AeroExpo, in association with AvBuyer, will incorporate for its 2022 Event a separate outdoor display area dedicated to all types of pre-owned aircraft available for sale. This initiative offers an added dimension to our Event, commented AeroExpo MD, John Brennan. It will allow individuals and brokers a unique opportunity to present aircraft for sale to a large segment of the general aviation community. Likewise for buyers, it allows the unusual opportunity to get up close and personal to a significant range of aircraft currently listed for sale. Harnessing the power and reach of AvBuyer, the world’s leading aviation listings website, the Pre-Owned Park will offer a wide selection of aircraft from individuals and dealers alike and offers another compelling reason for attending AeroExpo 2022. Interested? Please contact Emma Davey - emma@avbuyer.com for further details and to get your aircraft booked into our pre-owned area. This is a great opportunity for potential buyers to see your aircraft closeup and to speak with you direct for an on-the-spot sale!

CAA Representatives to be at AeroExpo The UK Civil Aviation Authority General Aviation Unit (CAA GAU) will be attending this year’s AeroExpo event, which coincides with it celebrating its 50th anniversary, “with a range of representatives on hand to answer all your GA questions and queries from airworthiness to operations and policy.” “We will have team members from our Shared Service Centre on hand to provide assistance with General FCL enquiries and providing advice on completing EASA conversions, for example,” said a CAA representative. “We will also have members of our Airspace team on hand to provide advice on how to prevent airspace infringements as well as guidance on airspace classification, and we hope to have representation from one of our aviation medicine specialists to talk about common in-flight medical issues that can affect general and sport aviation pilots.”

Meet the LAA AeroExpo, in association with Light Aircraft Association, will incorporate a ‘Meet the LAA’ initiative for its 2022 Event with an LAA display area and entrance to AeroExpo at halfprice for LAA members. This initiative continues to develop AeroExpo as the most important general aviation event in Northern Europe.

GAAC to ‘Spread the Word’ on Saving UK Airfields The General Aviation Awareness Council will be exhibiting at AeroExpo at Cotswold Airport as it continues to work to protect even more UK airfields from closure, something that is causing irreparable damage to the UK’s General Aviation sector and beyond. With most of the aviation industry dependent on airfields and airports, the dwindling number has caused alarm at the highest levels of government but still there is little protection. From its work, the GAAC is very aware of how many airfields are under threat of closure. Many have already disappeared, and a few key airports and airfields have little hope of re-opening unless something is done — for example, Plymouth and Manston. At the core of the GAAC’s activity is planning and it is advising many airfields on various aspects of planning, whether in development or in defending themselves from developers and local developments — everything from proposed ‘New Town’ housing estates to railway projects and masts that affect aircraft operations. To this end, GAAC expends considerable effort on limited funds to encourage airfields to have safeguarding plans in place, so planners are fully informed of their existence and requirements. The GAAC also works closely with the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for General Aviation, chairing its Working Groups in areas such as Airfields and Taxation of the sector (for example VAT on training). Ongoing work includes trying to establish in law a Strategic Airfield Network (SAN) and it is working closely on this, and other issues, with the Department for Transport and the CAA. It is also active in encouraging sustainable aviation, for example electric/hybrid aircraft and new cleaner fuels, and noise issues so airfields can work together with their local communities. At AeroExpo, GAAC will also be attempting to raise funds to cover its costs. As a nonprofit organisation supported by the various UK aviation associations, it has very limited funds but provides expert planning and other advice across the sector, regularly visiting airfields and supporting them when they have a need but lack resources or knowledge. www.gaac.org.uk/donations

Founded in 1946, with 75 years of history, no other UK association has the depth of knowledge and experience in looking after sport flying. From lowly beginnings the LAA has grown into an association that today serves around 7,800 members and oversees the airworthiness of 2,800 aircraft on Permits to Fly, plus a further 1,500 aircraft build projects. The Permit to Fly system enables owners to maintain and even build, their own aircraft with the assistance of LAA inspectors and the LAA is in addition, one of the principle representative groups providing balanced consultative input on matters such as airspace, planning and safety regulation. CIRRUS AIRCRAFT Opens New Sales Office in France

Cirrus Aircraft has announced the establishment of Cirrus France — a new, dedicated regional sales office “offering new and existing French customers an ideally located aircraft sales location.” The new office will be led by Cedric Dupont, who has been appointed as Regional Sales Director of Cirrus France, which officially launched on 31st March. Cirrus Aircraft designed and builds the SR Series of piston aircraft and the Vision Jet, the world’s first single-engine personal jet. To date, worldwide flight time on Cirrus aircraft has passed 13 million hours and 220 people have returned home safely to their families as a result of the inclusion of CAPS (the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System) as a standard feature on all Cirrus aircraft. “Cirrus Aircraft is committed to the French general aviation market considering the rich aviation culture in the country and in response to the ongoing demand for high-

performance, luxury aircraft coupled with industry-leading safety features,” said the manufacturer, which added that Cirrus France complements the existing European network of Cirrus sales agents, Cirrus training centres, and authorised service centres. The company plans to host Discover Cirrus events at regional airports for existing and prospective customers interested in connecting with the Cirrus Aircraft team, owners, and pilots, and to learn more about “the Cirrus Life.” The company now has eight locations in the United States and Europe, including Duluth, Minnesota; Grand Forks, North Dakota; Knoxville, Tennessee; Greater Dallas, Texas; Greater Phoenix, Arizona; Greater Orlando, Florida; Benton Harbor, Michigan; and Valenciennes, France.

CHECK YOUR INSURANCE ! Give us plenty of time to get you a Better Insurance Quote According to Chris Varley, Chairman of Export & General (E&G) Insurance, businesses are rarely proactive in looking early for better insurance premiums, which can contribute significantly to wider cost-cutting measures. “Whether you need insurance for your aircraft, hangar-keeper’s liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance, speaking to us early, perhaps a couple of months before the renewal date, can mean significant savings,” says Varley, who adds “We’re happy to remind you so feel free to let us know your current renewal dates.”

ABOUT E&G AVIATION INSURANCE

E&G Aviation Insurance is a leading aviation insurance broker specialising in insurance liability business cover including professional indemnity; cover for buildings including hangars and workshops; and for aircraft whether operating commercially, privately, or for training. Air Shows Are Coming Back! Take Care if Flying In… For the first time in two years, we can look forward to face-to-face meetings and events in a relaxed atmosphere, as the Covid-19 Pandemic sinks (hopefully) into the past.

Then there’s Farnborough returning in July, and numerous public air shows and fly-ins, with the latter requiring particular care from visiting pilots.

AERO Friedrichshafen in late April seemed to herald in this return to normality and revealed that the various aircraft manufacturers hadn’t stood idle, with new products and a central focus on more sustainable aviation — electric motors and hydrogen power pointing to new products and a whole new way of thinking.

Our message for everyone is enjoy your flying, be careful and put safety first, and always ensure you thoroughly prepare (and ensure you’re truly fit and well both physically and mentally) before each flight! Make sure your documents are up-to-date especially when not familiar with an aircraft — insurers will look for this in the (hopefully unlikely) event that you’ll need to make a claim.

At the time of writing, Private Flyer at Wycombe Air Park (Booker) in the UK is almost upon us and June will bring the return of AeroExpo, which has moved to Kemble (Cotswold Airport). By then the business aviation sector will have returned to Geneva for EBACE 2022, in late May, as well.

And as ever, as an insurance broker E&G Aviation Insurance is always happy to speak about quoting for your aircraft, hangar or airfield insurance. We will be present at several of the aforementioned events and hope to meet some of you ‘face to face’!

AERO 2022 was a great success! After the forced break due to the pandemic, 633 exhibitors from 40 nations presented their products and services to a global audience. Over the four days of the trade show, 27,700 visitors from 75 nations flocked to the exhibition halls in Friedrichshafen. The popularity of AERO shows how indispensable face-to-face meetings are for industry. General Aviation manufacturers have made good use of the AERO-free years to work at full speed on new products that make flying more sustainable, safer and easier. Tobias Bretzel, project manager of trade-show organiser Fairnamic, noted: “Manufacturers, customers and interested parties were once again able to sense the resilience and innovative power of the industry at AERO. The high-tech technologies from General Aviation will flow into large-scale aviation. The spirit of optimism and the impetus generated by AERO 2022 will have an impact far beyond the trade show.” Bretzel took over management of the event during the trade show from his predecessor Roland Bosch, who will remain with AERO as a senior consultant.

Innovation, Sustainability

AERO Makes a Strong Comeback after the Pandemic General Aviation demonstrated its resilience in the face of crises at the four-day AERO trade show in Friedrichshafen, Germany, 27-30 April 2022. General Aviation is taking an optimistic approach to the challenges of the future and presented a wide range of solutions for greater safety and sustainability at the event.

At AERO 2022, trade show visitors experienced a greater number of new products and innovations than ever before in the history of AERO. The topic of sustainability was very clearly in the foreground. Aviation is facing a technological generation change in drives. Which type of drive — electric, hybrid-electric, hydrogen fuel-cell or bio- and eFuels — will prevail in the future is not yet foreseeable and was the subject of many discussions during the most extensive AERO conference programme ever. What is certain, however, is that the future of aviation will be sustainable. New products on display for the first time at AERO included the Alpi Twin twin-engine powered aircraft from Italian manufacturer Alpi Aviation, the VL3 Evolution ultralight aircraft from Belgian/Czech manufacturer JMB Aircraft (with a small turboprop engine from Turbotech), and the Junkers A50 Junior and Junkers A60 ultralight aircraft. AERO was particularly successful for the Italian manufacturer Tecnam. The company not only presented its complete aircraft portfolio at its booth, but also celebrated the world premiere of its new IFR basic trainer, the P-Mentor, right at the start of the trade show. The aircraft type has already been certified and Tecnam was thus able to hand over the first example to launching customer Bartolini Air from Poland. At the show, Tecnam was able to further fill its orderbook. According to the manufacturer, it was able to add no fewer than 85 new aircraft orders at AERO. Walter da Costa, Tecnam’s chief sales officer, said: “We are thrilled to have such a terrific number of visitors and sales. Aviators appreciate the design, wide choice of models, interiors and the avionics. This impressive number of sales comes from the hard work, teamwork, the investments and choices we have made in the past and from continuous listening to our customers.” Aquila Aviation from Schönhagen, Germany also had a world premiere at AERO: The manufacturer showed its A414 four-seater. The company had already announced at AERO 2019 that it was working on a four-seat powered aircraft to expand its product line. At that time, the manufacturer had shown a fuselage mock-up of the new four-seater, giving an idea of the size of the new aircraft. A full-size A414 was on display at AERO 2022. The single engine is powered by a liquid-cooled Rotax 915iSc four-cylinder engine rated at 104 kW (141 hp).

aircraft through German TBM dealer Rheinland Air Service (RAS) of Mönchengladbach. The customer will use the aircraft for business travel, Nicolas Chabbert, senior vice president of the Daher Aircraft Division, announced at the show. Daher had originally planned to exhibit a TBM 960 at the show, but demand for the aircraft is so great that no demonstrator is currently available. The TBM 960 has been a best-seller from the start, according to Daher. Chabbert said that the company will build this model exclusively this year and expects more than 60 TBMs to be delivered this year. However, the TBM 910 — of which two were produced last year — will remain in the portfolio. The next available delivery position for a TBM is September 2023. Chabbert said supply challenges remain a challenge without which the manufacturer could produce up to 75 TBM aircraft per year.

Diamond Success Diamond Aircraft was able to increase its aircraft production worldwide to 240 aircraft last year. While that is only a marginally higher number than in 2019, when 239 of the manufacturer’s aircraft were delivered, it is nearly double the number of aircraft produced in 2017, when the Wiener Neustadt-based manufacturer was acquired by China’s Wanfeng Group.

Liqun (Frank) Zhang, Diamond Aircraft’s chief executive officer (CEO), said at that Diamond would expand production significantly in the coming years. More than 300 aircraft will be produced in 2022, 400 in 2023, and as many as 500 from 2024. The plans are not wishful thinking, however, but are based on realistic data. The company has a full orderbook for 2022 and 2023 and all targeted deliveries for the next three years are backed by firm orders. Diamond Aircraft currently produces aircraft at its headquarters in Wiener Neustadt, Austria and London, Ontario, in Canada. In Quingdao, China, construction of a new plant is in the final stages, said Zhang. “The market is coming back,” he remarked in Friedrichshafen. Demand for DA40s in China alone, for example, is currently running at 100 aircraft per year. Zhang added that the intention is to produce at the respective plants primarily for the local and regional markets. In Wiener Neustadt, an expansion of production is only possible to a limited extent, as the development and production of the DA62 and MPP aircraft is located there. In China, the company intends to produce aircraft primarily for the Chinese and Asia-Pacific markets. The North American market will be served from its Canadian plant.

The French manufacturer Elixir Aircraft came to Friedrichshafen with three aircraft. Elixir delivered the first series-produced all-carbon Elixir to its launch customer, the Aero-Club des Pertuis in France, in February this year. The company has also won another prestigious customer, the Airbus Flight Academy, which will use its first Elixir as a training aircraft for abinitio training of future commercial airline pilots from 2022. At the show, Elixir even displayed a second type, the Elixir 915iS Turbo, which complements the basic Elixir. The Elixir 915iS is powered by a 915 iS Rotax engine rated at 140 hp. Arthur Leopold-Leger, chairman of Elixir Aircraft, said: “We are very pleased to have met many aviation enthusiasts, other manufacturers and suppliers again [in Friedrichshafen]. AERO 2020 was supposed to be a great show for us, but unfortunately it was cancelled. Two years later, we are not only here with an approved aircraft, but we are even presenting a second aircraft type!" ■ Volker K. Thomalla

When a Thunderbolt Strikes… You might think from the title this is going to be a lesson in meteorology! But, instead, it’s about another phenomenon that strikes from the heavens: the mighty P-47 ‘Thunderbolt’! Many of you will know the Thunderbolt by its slightly less punchy nickname; the ‘Jug’! The reason behind this rather unusual aviation name seems to cause a bit of a divide. It’s either; ‘Jug’ short for ‘Juggernaut’, due to its brute size, weight and almost unstoppable power once it gets tanking along, or ‘Jug’ due to its blunt-shape fuselage resembling a 1940s milk jug! Bear in mind that at the time it was presented to the world, the P-47 was the largest single engine fighter to take to the sky. Pilots were sceptical about its size and weight so they may have unfairly gone with the latter ‘Jug’… But, in a relatively short period of time, it became a highly appreciated combat aircraft. So out of respect I rather hopefully lean towards the former ’Jug’. But no one seems to know for sure! The Thunderbolt was designed by lead engineer Alexander Kartveli and following completion of its test flight programme it was produced in the thousands by US manufacturer Republic Aviation. Between 1941 to 1945, more than 15,500 P-47s were built! And any early scepticism was soon longforgotten because, in contrast to those early concerns, it proved one of the most effective singleengine combat aircraft of WWII. 34 HISTORIC AIRCRAFT EUROPE JUNE 2022

By Jamie Chalkley Here's why… Thanks to its mighty 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine, bearing it’s teeth and growling through its 18 cylinders (two rows of nine!), not to mention backed up by its whopping turbocharger, it ensured a smooth delivery of awesome power from sea level right up to 40,000 ft. And put the aircraft nose down in a dive attack, it topped out at over 400 mph (a later experimental model achieved 505 mph! — apparently a record that wasn’t ‘officially’ broken in a piston-powered aircraft until 1989). However, there was one issue with that huge engine up front: it needed a huge prop to deliver the thrust. It was no less than 12 ft 2 inches in diameter! It was so big the designers really had to knuckle down and work out how to keep it off the ground during taxi, take-off and landing. Their solution: a 9-inch telescopic extension to the landing gear legs when in the down position, and which helpfully retracted back in when the gear was raised — otherwise the legs simply wouldn’t fit inside the undercarriage bay. During late 1942, the P-47 headed for the UK. Some 800 were delivered to the British and Commonwealth forces. Again, there was some hesitancy to accept this mammoth aircraft was going to be up for the job, but it did the airmen proud as it escorted numerous B-17s on missions to Germany and fended off the

formidable Fw190. Not to mention it took out a high number of BF110s. In 1944 a limited number of ‘M’ models found their way to the UK as V1 Rocket interceptors. With a top speed of 473 mph the aircraft proved once more to be the underdog that outperformed so many other types.

Heavyweight Fighter I keep mentioning size and weight, but just how big was the ‘Jug’? With an empty weight of 10,000 lbs and a fully loaded combat weight of 17,500 lbs (that’s eight tons by the way!), it was definitely the heaviest fighter in town. It was almost 50 percent heavier than a P-51 Mustang (and four feet longer and three feet wider) and more than twice the weight of a Spitfire. It was just huge parked alongside other fighters. But many pilots really grew to love it. Not just for its amazing performance; not just for its amazing brute strength (with an ability to take a lot of combat punishment), but it also had a much roomier cockpit (which many described as having a ‘lounge chair’ to fly from) and excellent visibility from the teardrop canopy (an improvement from the early ‘razorback’ canopies). All in all, it quickly became a surprising favourite of those that flew it.

Legacy From its first flight on the 6th May 1941, through to its post WWII retirement in the late 1960s (the last being the Peruvian Air Force), the P-47 (or ‘Jug’ to its friends) was an outstanding aircraft. It didn’t quite have the range of the P-51 Mustang (approximately 50 percent in fact) but its sheer rugged personality and its many combat attributes made it a much-loved type. Perhaps it’s fair to say that it’s an aircraft that, outside of those that flew them, doesn’t get the full credibility it deserves. The P-47 undertook some 500,000 missions during WWII. It shot down over 7,000 enemy planes. And of those, it shot down more Luftwaffe aircraft (3,572 recorded) than any other Allied fighter. America’s top Ace of WWII, Major Gabby Gabreski, shot down 28 aircraft from his time in the P-47. It also served in every theatre of WWII and has been operated by over 20 nations in a military role.

Thunderbolt the Sequel! In 1965, a company by the name of ‘Fairchild Hiller’ (following their purchase of the Hiller Helicopter

company a year earlier) acquired the Republic Aviation Company. They became known as Fairchild Industries. In 1971, a subsidiary called ‘Fairchild Republic Division’ began developing the A-10, a twin turbofan, subsonic, heavyweight attack aircraft. The design team gave a firm nod to their former glory days of the P-47 and called it the ‘Thunderbolt II’. The P-47 remains today one of the greats of WWII. It didn’t quite get the stage presence of the Spitfire or P-51, but it was without a doubt an aircraft that made a significant difference to the air combat results of WWII. It was a real workhorse, it got on with the job in hand, and it kept many of its great pilots safe and brought them back home time and time again. It might be nicknamed the ‘Jug’ but in combat it could definitely strike like a thunderbolt!

‘Nellie’ The picture aircraft was built in 1945 at Republic’s factory in Indiana, USA. Its specific USAAF history is unknown, but what we do know is this: Following a stint in the Air Training Command at the end of the war, like many others, the aircraft went into storage. But you can’t keep a good aircraft down, and this sky searching P-47 found air under its wings once more in September 1952 when it went back into operational service. A year later (and along with

several other P-47s) it was back on duty, this time with the Peruvian Air Force, and there it stayed there until retirement in early 1967. It served them well as both an active front-line combat aircraft and as an advanced fighter-trainer. Following another short spell of storage, the yet-tobe-named ‘Nellie’ was airborne again in 1971 and changed hands a few more times before ending up with world-renowned warbird specialist Steve Hinton in Chino, California. His specialist team replaced the engine and carried out a restoration to the airframe inside and out, and the P-47 flew like a new aircraft again in August 1985. A UK visit came next; the year was 1986 and the aircraft was presented to UK fans, flying under its nose-art name of ‘No Guts, No Glory’ and operated by first-class warbird company ‘The Fighter Collection’ through to 2007, when the aircraft went stateside once again. But it obviously missed flying in the UK's fair-weather skies and over the UK's wonderful countryside because in 2018 ‘Nellie’ was back — and hasn’t left since. If you want to see ‘Nellie’ flying then you won’t get a better demonstration than seeing the Ultimate Fighters Display Team where ‘Nellie’ leads the formation — superb!!

AERIAL SURVEYING WITH HELICOPTERS

– It’s Just Not a Job for Fixed-Wing Aircraft! Do you need an aircraft to assist with surveying land or sea, whether real estate, geographical, forestry, wildlife, etc.? Look no further! Patrick Ryan shows you how helicopters are one of the most diverse tools with unique capabilities that can “get the job done”. In recent years, helicopters have increasingly been used to conduct aerial surveys due to their adaptability, range, and maneuvrability, allowing the surveyor to capture large quantities of high-resolution geometric/photographic data. In some ways, this is only possible from a hovering, ‘birds-eye’ view. With a range of benefits, surveying professionals are just not relying on fixed-wing and drone aircraft to get the job done, thanks to recent advances in technology. Instead, they rely on helicopters to perform various surveying tasks, from ultra-high-definition imagery to line-of-sight surveys. Without a doubt, helicopters bring safety, accuracy, and cost advantages. So, how are helicopters used in this industry of aerial surveying? The first part of answering this question is ‘What is aerial surveying?’ 36 AERIAL WORK EUROPE JUNE 2022

Aerial Surveying 101

Aerial surveying is a geomatics practice of gathering data that uses aerial photography or remote sensing imaging from various electromagnetic spectrum bands, such as infrared, gamma, or ultraviolet. In aerial surveying, the goal is to obtain a complete and accurate image of the world below. There are several approaches to acquiring this data: •

Aerial Photography — This is the most prevalent method used. It entails taking images with a camera and analysing that data later. • Remote Sensing Imaging — Remote sensing imaging involves using sensors to collect data through radio waves, infrared, or ultraviolet wavelengths of light. • Multispectral — This type of approach or technology enables the analyst to see all light wavelengths. They have many advantages, such as seeing through clouds and other obstructions that would otherwise hide information from the eye. • LiDAR — LiDAR is a form of mapping that uses light pulses or laser beams to collect 3D images. The types of information gathered by aerial surveys can vary based on the needs of the person who contracts the survey. Specifically, aerial surveying collects data regarding topography, property use, and engineering structures.

Popular Types of Helicopter Aerial Surveying When it comes to helicopters conducting aerial surveys, the best method of collecting geomatics and imagery data is by combining sensors such as LiDAR, Radar, and digital cameras with GPS units installed on the aircraft. When mixed with the newest presentation tools, such as 3D photogrammetry and 3D LiDAR mapping, the results are extremely useful and effective for the purpose of the survey and the end-user. In general, private companies, government agencies, and public organisations obtain the services of helicopter aerial surveying firms to conduct surveys for city mapping, land use analysis, geotechnical/topographical mapping, and special project planning. Specifically, aerial surveying helicopters are routinely used for these specialised purposes: Wildlife Surveys – Helicopter wildlife surveys are focused on taking measurements of naturally recurring wildlife population growth and migration patterns. Helicopters provide the ‘low & slow’ ability to observe from the sky without disturbing natural wildlife habitats. Additionally, helicopters are used over water and along coastal areas to track specific seaborne wildlife such as whales and manatees. Geographic Surveys – Helicopter geographic surveys

involve aerial mapping and taking measurements of geographical areas. The information from these surveys supports seismology and geology studies, along with land maintenance projects. Furthermore, aerial helicopter surveys are used to assess the damage caused by forest fires and the erosion of topsoil areas along waterways and streams.

effectiveness relative to carrying essential sensor systems onboard and providing the standard range/endurance required for surveying operations. The leading or most popular types of helicopters used by helicopter aerial surveying companies are: • Bell Helicopter — Bell 206 • Eurocopter — AS350 Écureuil (or Squirrel) or Airbus Helicopters H125 • Robinson — R22, R44

Construction Surveys – Helicopter construction surveys are used at each phase of a construction project, e.g., be it a new highway, bridge, office building, or even a personal home. With the appropriate sensors and data processing systems, helicopters provide the means to capture from the same advantage point (coordinates & altitude) the initial measurement of a construction site to periodic progress reports throughout the lifecycle. Agricultural Surveys – Helicopter agricultural Surveys are those set out to assist farmers, produce companies, and many other agriculture-environmental organisations in determining growth, output, and farmland management. Helicopters provide the means to survey with a wide array of sensors an entire farm or field in a short period. The data from these surveys helps the agriculture sector determine watering or fertilisation success and even monitor the mechanical status of farming equipment in remote areas of a ranch.

The Pros & Cons of Using Helicopters for Aerial Surveying

When it comes to the pros and cons of using a helicopter for your aerial surveying, the answer lies with the unique capabilities it provides. The helicopter provides specific capabilities that other fixed-wing aircraft and drones cannot provide. While the actual surveying equipment may be separate (either LiDAR or photogrammetric), the airborne platform from which the data is captured will significantly impact the cost of the survey and the accuracy of the survey. Here are some pros and cons of using a helicopter in relation to drones and fixed-wing aircraft. • Stability — Helicopters can hover while integrated with large sensor systems, remaining stable even in

bad weather over locations drones and fixed-wing aircraft can’t operate. Additionally, helicopters are more maneuvrable in high winds than drones. Access — Helicopters are often desirable over ground or drone surveys because they don’t routinely require permits or permissions to access a property or protected environments. Lower & Closer — Helicopters can fly lower and acquire higher resolution imagery compared to fixed-wing aircraft.

In terms of negatives, the helicopter for aerial surveying is not perfect. The imperfect aspects are: • Weather — High winds and rain can ground a helicopter quickly, and IMC [Instrument Meteorological Conditions] is a primary threat to any helicopter crew during every flight operation. • Range — Helicopters also have a shorter operational range than fixed-wing aircraft, plus they’re slower. This means you spend more chargeable time in the air than on a fixed-wing aircraft. However, they’re cheaper than a drone, but the drone doesn’t have (anywhere close to) the range of a helicopter.

The Kit & Craft Used in Helicopter Surveying Operations The aerial surveying service sectors primarily use lightto medium-lift helicopters. This is because these helicopters provide the best performance and cost

When it comes to the type of systems used in aerial surveying operations, systems like these are routinely integrated into an aerial surveying helicopter: • • • • • •

Mounted Sensors — e.g., RIEGL, VP-1 HeliCopterPod Inflight Data Recording — Remote|Geosystems, geoDVR Data-Link — SVP Aerospace, HDR-108 & AM-206 Digital Global Positioning Systems (DGPS) — Cloud Cap Technology, Aircraft GNSS DGPS Real-time Satellite Aircraft Position Tracking — e.g., Blue Sky Networking, DS1000C, ACH100 And many more…

The Last Survey

As you can see, the helicopter is a critical part of the Aerial Surveying sector. If you think about it, no other aircraft can meet the specialised or specific requirements of collecting data in unique locations and altitudes. Without a doubt, helicopters can safely survey areas that are either hazardous or not accessible by any other means. In addition, with the ability to vertically fly and hover, helicopters offer a perspective that other platforms can’t. So, when you bring together the unique flying capabilities of a helicopter, leading-edge surveying systems, and flown by highly trained aircrew, you have a very effective platform regarding safety, accuracy, and cost. Therefore, if your work requires you to conduct an aerial survey, don’t be surprised if a helicopter is a ‘perfect fit’ for the job! ■

Lyndon York Has “Been There, Seen It, Done It!” Introduction By Patrick Ryan

Lyndon with with DH Rapide G-AHED at Elstree

As the President of the Airborne Sensor Operators Group (ASOG) Association, I've had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know one of the mainstays of modern-day commercial Aerial Surveying – Lyndon York.

Today, these different types of sensors are flown onboard various aerial platforms, all of which support different tasks, e.g., looking for minerals, supporting construction projects, conducting environmental research — albeit in airplanes produced in the 60s and 70s.

When the editors at AvBuyer asked me to look at some notes and photos Lyndon assembled regarding his long flying career and the history of civil aerial aviation, I happily accepted their offer. However, after going through his notes and photos, it became apparent that the story of Aerial Surveying and Lyndon’s professional life as a navigator and sensor operator needed to be told. Lyndon York’s story is not just about his professional life but also the history of the late 20th century Aerial Surveying & Mapping sector and the unique aircraft that made it happen. The following article is based on Lyndon’s notes and a few discussions I had with him regarding the history of Aerial Surveying and the part he played in this critical Aerial Work aviation sector.

Aerial Surveying & Mapping Since the 1920s, Aerial Surveying and the professional home of Lyndon York have come a long way from glass plate cameras and open cockpits. Today’s aerial surveying operates using precise mapping sensors €1m+, which record information in the visible spectrum and far into the invisible bands. Today’s sensors are

large-format cameras, LiDAR, SAR, magnetometers, electro-optical, infrared, multispectral, hyperspectral sensors, and many others.

The average age of current survey modified aircraft is 40-50 years old but they’re integrated with sensors about ten times the airplane’s value! A modern sensor has a life of about three years, primarily due to rapid advances in digital technology, while still mounted in an airplane going back to the 1960s and 70s.

The Birth of Aerial Surveying To get the proper perspective of Lyndon’s story and the world he operated in, you have to understand the history of Aerial Surveying that he helped write.

If you didn’t know, aerial surveying started in the American Civil War by aerial photographers (the first Airborne Sensor Operators) taking photos from hot air balloons, which became invaluable for monitoring enemy troops and gun positions. Also interesting, aerial photographers experimented using miniature cameras mounted on pigeons and kites during this time. With the introduction of fixed-wing aircraft, aerial photography or aerial surveying expanded to new heights. As soon as airplanes became more capable and reliable, they were improvised to carry out more precise aerial imagery.

Technology Improves

Abrams Explorer specially designed for air survey

During World War I, cameras were adapted for vertical usage and became an essential tool for reconnaissance and mapping tasks. After World War I, with the availability of surplus airplanes from the likes of Vickers and Fairey, aircraft were used to map European colonies in Africa and India. During the ‘30s and with the development of large-format cameras, more modern airplanes were being designed and adapted for mapping missions. One such aircraft was the Abrams P-1 Explorer. An essential feature in any aerial survey airplane was for the navigator to have good forward visibility, hence the fully glazed nose. During the 30-40s aeroplanes like the Avro Anson.Airspeed Oxford, DH Rapides plus other cabin types were modified to carry these heavy survey cameras. Before and during WW2 camera and aeroplane technology progressed very fast Camera like Williamson F24 and Fairchild 17 were installed in Spitfires, Blenheim, Mosquitos, plus many other types. Whereby floor and side hatches could be installed.

A New Industry Emerges suited to carry large, heavy cameras, which proved their worth during the post-war period.

After World War II, various ex-military aircraft became available to civilian aerial survey operators. These aircraft were easily modified with floor hatches enabling large format cameras to be vertically mounted and plumbed into the airplane’s electrical and vacuum systems were needed to flatten the film during the exposure time. Many of these surplus aircraft like C47b Dakota, B-17 Flying Fortresses, and B-25 Mitchell bombers were highly

The basic requirements for a post-war survey aircraft was six hours or more endurance, carrying a camera weighing 300lbs or more, and providing for a crew of 3-5 individuals. The ideal requirement was up to 9 (or more) hours of endurance and operating comfortably above 20,000ft. Wild RC5a survey camera from the 50s.

The 1950s The 1950s saw the emergence of civil aerial survey companies whose operations spread far and wide throughout Europe, and beyond. Companies like Aircraft Operating Co. (later Hunting Aerosurveys) and Fairey Air Surveys, mainly equipped with C47b Dakota, were established to map the UK and its colonies. The Hunting Aerosurvey C-47s were fitted with P&W 1830-92c engines with two-stage superchargers enabling operations at higher altitudes. The 1950s began with cameras only, then came magnetometers. Aerial surveying magnetometers were directly descended from the Magnetic Anomaly Detectors (MAD) used on anti-submarine aircraft. These tail-boom mounted sensors were primarily integrated on C-47s and extensively used for oil and mineral surveys over the North Sea and in other remote areas.

Williamson F24 recce camera

Besides domestic surveying, overseas aerial surveying operations would see a crew away from home for months in countries like India, South Africa, and Canada. During this period, companies like Hunting Survey and Fairey Air Surveys established locally registered companies in these locations and later became independent operators. Some of these firms are: • Adastra Aerial Surveys - Australia (Lockheed Hudsons and AVRO Ansons) • Kenting Aerial Surveys - Canada (Boeing B-17s, DH Mosquitos, Ansons, P-38s, PBY Catalinas) • New Zealand Aerial Mapping Co. - New Zealand (General Aircraft Co. Monospar ST-25s) During this timeframe, many aerial survey companies tried various other types of aircraft like the Hurel-Dubois HD.34 and Edgar Percival E.P.9. However, the venerable C-47/DC-3 remained the most suitable platform for long-range operations.

Oblique survey camera

Near the end of the 1950s, the 1940s aircraft became relatively expensive to run and maintain. As a result, newer types og aircraft like de Havilland DH.104 Dove and Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer were added to the aerial surveying community. Over time, these aircraft proved useful as aerial surveys platforms.

The 1970s During the ‘70s, there were various international hotspots for aerial surveying. One such place was Nigeria. During this time, one would see a line-up of platforms on the tarmac varying from a French B-17, Finnish Lockheed Lodestar, de Havilland DH.104 Dove, DC-3, Percival Prince, plus various other types of aircraft. By this time, the demand for strategic minerals like potassium, thorium, uranium, and precious metals expanded the need for aerial surveying. The primary sensors used were magnetometers, spectrometers, VLF recorders, etc. The critical requirement for survey platforms was long-range endurance (aircraft with less than five hours were not very viable), high-altitude capability, oxygen systems, high-performance generators, and the ability to carry several hundred pounds of surveying instruments and support equipment.

Monospar ST25 survey aeroplane

Near the end of the 70s, older types of aircraft were getting harder to maintain and sustain, so the first 'Spam Cans', such as Piper PA-23/PA-31, Cessna C-337/C402, and Beechcraft B80 Queen Air, began to appear in the skies over Europe.

However, many non-profit government aerial surveying agencies like the French IGN (Institut National de L'information Géographique et Forestière) continued to operate earlier model aircraft like the Boeing B-17 well into the 1970s.

According to Lyndon, by this time, most aerial survey companies were run by “dreaded accountants in place of flying types. The accountants were not interested in crew comforts, cabin space, or toilets — we had to get out there and just get the job flown.”

The 1960s During the 60s and onwards, oil and mineral surveying and other industry sectors increased the demand for aerial surveying. Along with this, sensor technology and its availability expanded tenfold. As a result, sensors like surveying radars, ground profile recorders, scintillometers, Synthetic Aperture Radars (SAR), electro-optical cameras evolved as essential tools for highly accurate mapping, mineral surveys, environment surveillance, agricultural monitoring, and numerous other usages requiring millimetre accuracy. With all this new technology, aerial surveying aircraft required extensive modifications, e.g., installing radomes, booms, equipment racks, recording systems, additional batteries, APUs, etc. Additionally, to obtain the required accuracy, these aircraft were also equipped with (at the time) precise navigation equipment like Doppler, Decca, and LORAN.

Adastra Lockheed Hudson

The 1980s to Today

Companies like Hunting Surveys and Fairey Surveys continued to utilise their C-47/DC-3 aircraft but with heavy modifications. Many of their aircraft had 20ftlong magnetometer tail-booms installed and 500-gallon extended long-range tanks positioned in the cabin, allowing for 12 hours of flight time. Other notable aircraft like Consolidated PBY Catalina Flying Boats proved worthwhile fitted with circular EM antenna arrays.

From the ‘80s to the present day, the demand for aerial surveying continued at a healthy pace. By this period, the aerial surveying community started to utilise jet and turbine aircraft like Learjets and Aero Commanders. Today, one of the most widely used turbine aircraft for aerial surveying is the 690A Twin Commander series, along with the Piper PA-42 Cheyenne, and Cessna 441 Conquest II.

By the 1960s, most developed countries had civil aerial surveying companies. However, the countries with security concerns regarding aerial mapping relied on government agencies or military units, e.g., the French IGN provides mapping services within France and former French colonies.

Also, during the past few decades, the world switched from analogue to digital, which significantly changed the capabilities and quality of aerial surveying. The process of pre-planning, collecting, and data processing has improved a hundredfold since the first aerial surveying photos taken on the battlefields of the American Civil War.

Besides small aerial surveying companies and large government agencies providing mapping services in the ‘60s, some airlines added aerial survey subdivisions to their corporate structures like BKS Air Transport and KLM. However, many of these airline aerial surveying subdivisions were either sold or disbanded over the years.

Been There, Seen It, Done It! As mentioned before, Aerial Surveying and the professional world of Lyndon York have come a long way from glass plate cameras and open cockpits. Since the 1960s, Lyndon has traveled the vast corners of the world while flying civil survey missions in many types of aircraft. According to Lyndon, he has operated in over 122 countries; was shot at three times while flying (fortunately, they all missed!); was jailed for spying in three different countries; witnessed the odd ‘coup d'état’; and lost a few flying comrades to survey flying accidents.

Career Path Lyndon got his start in aerial surveying with Hunting Aerosurveys Ltd. Besides receiving his initial training as a navigator and operator, he conducted aerial surveying operations in aircraft like the de Havilland Dragon Rapide, Percival Prince, Douglas C-47b Dakota, and Auster J/1-5 throughout Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Following his work at Hunting Aerosurveys, Lyndon went to work for Fairey Surveys Ltd and then for BKS Surveys Ltd. As with Hunting Aerosurveys, he continued to fly a variety of exceptional aircraft around the globe, including the de Havilland DH.104 Dove, Douglas C-47b Dakota, Beechcraft B80 Queen Air, Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer, Avro Anson Mk.19, Beechcraft Model 18, and later the Cessna 336 Skymaster and Piper PA-23. After completing his ‘tenure’ with some of the most notable aerial surveying companies in the UK, Lyndon decided to become a freelance aerial surveying navigator and operator. He continued to travel the far reaches of the planet while flying in some fascinating aircraft like the Antonov An-2, Antonov An-26, and Beechcraft Baron B55. Following these older airplanes, he started flying in more modern ‘Spam-Cans’ like the 690A Twin Commander series, Cessna 404 Titan, and Piper PA-31 Navajo. Outside of flying in civil-type aircraft, Lyndon also flew in some converted World War 2 bombers like the A-26 Invader/On Mark Marksman and the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress in adventurous locations such as Africa.

Favorite Aircraft & Memories There are always notable or memorable events, people, and aircraft one encounters with any aviation career. But, when it comes to Lyndon, he has some favourites: Hunting Surveys Ltd – de Havilland Dragon Rapide (G-AIYR) G-AIYR was built in 1943 and served in the RAF until the war’s end. After the war, Hunting AeroSurveys purchased G-AIYR and based it at Elstree Aerodrome, where Lyndon started his career. He never forgot the smell of G-AIYR’s fabric, dope, and oil. G-AIYR was fitted with long-range internal tanks but often ran out of oil before fuel! During its surveying years, G-AIYR operated throughout the UK and even carried out a survey mission in Jordan, where the ailerons warped in the heat! Today, you can find G-AIYR conducting pleasure flights from Duxford. As a fun side-story regarding Lyndon and G-AIYR, years later — when Lyndon was working in Zambia in the ‘70s and preparing to fly his modern Cessna 404 Titan on a survey mission —he heard a strange but familiar sound. He was amazed to see a de Havilland Dragon Rapide flying over the airfield as he looked up. Then, as Lyndon and his pilot turned on their VHF radio, they heard a very familiar callsign – ‘G-AIYR! It turned out to be an old friend (David Sisters) flying the historic Sir Allan Cobham pioneering route from the UK to South Africa with G-AIYR. Without delay, Lyndon and his pilot took off. They chatted with David over the radio, where he could fill him in on G-AIYR’s surveying history while taking a few pictures of G-AIYR with his survey camera. As Lyndon noted – “It can be a small world!”

Edgar Percival EP9 Prospector

operated Douglas C-47s for long-range and endurance operations, e.g., North Sea, etc. G-ANAF is a C-47b or DC-3 and was routinely outfitted with various sensor ans kits that other surveying aircraft couldn’t accommodate. Currently, G-ANAF is still flying as an R&D platform. Like with G-AIYR and G-AHED, Lyndon’s exploits continued. While conducting aerial surveys in Liberia with G-ANAF, Lyndon and his crew suffered an engine failure over a very remote area of the country. Fortunately, they could find and land at a plantation airfield some 200 miles from their home base in Monrovia. Because there were no telephones or other means of communications, Lyndon was ‘elected’ to find a taxi and report back to Spriggs Payne, the main airport at Monrovia. At the time, not one person at the plantation airfield was bothered about their situation except for an elderly German gentleman with a battered Cessna C180. It turned out that this gentleman was a POW in the UK during the war and felt very grateful to help the crew with their situation. After reporting the problem, Hunting Surveys delivered a spare engine and a sheer-leg lifter aboard a sister C47. After a short period, Lyndon and his crew were able to replace the engine and continue the survey project.

Summary As you can see, Lyndon York’s story is not just about his professional life but also the history of Aerial Surveying and the aircraft that made it happen. Since the 1920s, Aerial Surveying and the professional world of Lyndon York have come a long way from bail-wire aircraft and wet-film cameras to digital systems that can survey far beyond the human eye with precision and accuracy.

Hunting Surveys Prince G-ALRY

Hunting Surveys Ltd – de Havilland Dragon Rapide (G-AHED) Hunting Surveys also operated G-AHED. This aircraft was built in 1946 and, according to Lyndon, had an entirely different smell to G-AIYR! Like G-AIYR, GAHED also operated throughout the UK from Elstree Aerodrome until donated to the Royal Air Force Museum in 1968.

Like so many legends of a profession or industry sector, they never really stop. In the case of Lyndon – old navigators never die, they just point the way! Today, Lyndon is still hard at work in the aerial surveying sector by consulting and brokering aerial survey aircraft, sensors, and crew kits through his company Trackair Services Ltd. Along with this, he launched AERIALSURVEY.com, which is now part of ClearSkies Geomatics. To sum it all up, If you ask Lyndon if aerial survey aircraft are still required or if satellites and drones can do the same job, he would reply with, ‘They Can't!’ ■

One of Lyndon’s most notable experiences with G-AHED was on a survey flight to Shannon, Ireland. At the time, G-AHED had auxiliary long-range fuel tanks installed in the forward cabin. A few miles out over the ocean, the left engine started spluttering, and it soon became evident that the auxiliary fuel tank was not feeding due to a frozen valve. So Lyndon and his pilot had to land at Swansea, Wales. Coincidently, the date of this flight happened soon after Ronnie Biggs, the great train robber, had escaped from prison. After landing and the valve was freed up, they launched again, but a few minutes later, the same problem occurred once more, so they returned to Swansea for another attempt of repairing the problem. After landing the second time, ATC thought this was very suspicious, and they were ordered to stay in the aircraft until they received some visitors. After waiting for some time, the police arrived and searched the cabin for Mr. Biggs! Needless to say, Lyndon and his pilot eventually reached Shannon! Hunting Surveys Ltd - Douglas C-47b Dakota/DC-3 (G-ANAF) Besides operating Dragon Rapides and other platforms, Hunting Surveys also G-ANAF recently - flying R&D task

Diamond DA62 ‘SurveyStar’ Proves its Worth with GeoFly Diamond says the new DA62 MPP SurveyStar is a “strong and modern European state-of-the-art survey configuration”. Engineered in cooperation with project partners Vexcel Imaging, IGI, Somag and RIEGL Laser Measurement Systems, the aircraft has been proving its worth with GeoFly, which has placed an order for two more of the aircraft.

SURVEY HATCH CONCEPT

Survey Hatch To have a clean and aerodynamic shape, the Austrian aircraft manufacturer opted to integrate survey cameras as well as the stabilisation mount in the cabin by replacing the right-hand operator seat. The easy access to the large luggage compartment allows Diamond an easy installation of all additional mission equipment such as data storage units, FMS and so on.

Diamond commented that the low noise signature of the aircraft, assisted by the on-top exhaust systems, in combination with the low fuel-burn, fits well with the idea of operating quietly while also being efficient and environmentally friendly.

After a year of what it describes as “a massive development effort,” Diamond received two EASA STC (Supplemental Type Certificate) major changes — STC 62-001, which describes the 20”/ ø508 mm modification in the fuselage centre section; and STC 62-002, which describes the single-seat configuration modification. DA62 MPP SURVEYSTAR OPERATOR STATION

Single Seat The standard available seat bench of the DA62 was replaced by two individual DA62 pilot seats to significantly increase the comfort and generate more room for the operator. The seats were repositioned backwards by 50mm, and there is a console in the middle for standard Dzus units or other tailor-made applications as well as the opportunity to benefit from an adjustable backrest.

Configuration A Vexcel UltraCAM Eagle or Osprey Ultranav are installed in the cabin on a SOMAG GSM4000 stabilisation mount, and there is a RIEGL VQ-780 II airborne scanner in the Universal Nose.

DA62 MPP SURVEYSTAR FOR GEOFLY

First Operator: GeoFly Diamond said the DA62 SurveyStar “exceeded all expectations” during its first survey season in a real-world environment. “Expectations had been high — and so was the pressure — after the roll-out of the new DA62 SurveyStar. The entire Aerial Survey industry had an eye on the first steps of the DA62 SurveyStar.” Based on its first 100+ mission hours with GeoFly, Diamond said the aircraft “has already proven its efficiency and versatility. In fact, the aircraft is outperforming all expectations and has marked a couple of cornerstones worth highlighting…” •

Endurance: Equipped in the multi-sensor setup including the Riegl VQ-780i and the Vexcel Ultracam Eagle M3, an endurance of 7:17 hours was achieved with fuel remaining for almost two more hours, resulting in a max. total endurance of 8:20 hours + 0:45 hours of reserve.

Autonomy: With the help of the three-axis digital autopilot and a special procedure the aircraft is able to fly survey missions almost fully autonomously; thus even ultralong missions become less exhausting for the crew.

DA62 SurveyStar vs. Turboprop Average The wide speed range (90 – 195 kts) allows for “a very versatile utilisation of the aircraft,” said Diamond. “It can be used for low and slow missions, that are normally flown by piston airplanes, but also for high and faster missions usually flown by turbine-powered platforms. The SurveyStar is more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly in terms of emissions and noise, added Diamond.

RIEGL VQ-780 II AIRBORNE SCANNER

Efficiency: Due to the extremely low fuelburn of the jet-fuel engines, efficiency is so good that the aircraft can compete with turbine-powered aircraft in high and fast missions, assuming your acquisition window (weather, ATC etc.) is big enough. However, as the flight takes longer due to the lower speeds, the cost costs are much lower compared with classical turboprop aircraft. Versatility: In light of the above, GeoFly already ordered the integration of its Vexcel Ultracam Osprey series, including the new 4.1 on the DA62 SurveyStar, which is usually used on turboprop aircraft.

Example Survey Mission Based on 'slow and low' missions analysis. Mission specific details provided by GeoFly Pilot Thor Håkon Sjursen: • Mission: Photo-flight • Total time airborne: 7:17 hours • Total survey time: 6 hours (+1:17 hour ferry at 75% Power) • Mission speed: 95 -100 kt GS (82-103 KIAS) • Altitude: 2,820 – 3,830 ft • Power Setting: 38-51% • Avg. fuel-flow: 8.4-10.2 US gal/h (total) • Fuel consumption: 70.5 US gal • Endurance remaining after landing: 1:45 hours Thor Håkon Sjursen, pilot for GeoFly, commented: “The precise performance of the autopilot allows the aircraft to fly the lines itself, reducing the pilot’s workload and allowing us to spot an unknown glider flying close to our area inside Class D controlled airspace (ATC did not recognise the traffic) at the same altitude.” According to Diamond, the bottom line is that the investment made, and the trust that GeoFly had in the new aircraft, has made it “a profitable decision, that sets them apart from their competitors.” Aicke Damrau, Managing Director of GeoFly, commented: “The purchase of the new DA62 SurveyStar was a very special step for us. The DA62 is very versatile… due on the one hand to the wide range of speeds at which we can operate the aircraft, and on the other hand to the possibility of refueling the aircraft with jet fuel. The low fuel consumption of the DA62, of approximately 50 litres per hour, is another important point when we consider efficiency. “With the DA62 SurveyStar we have added an extremely versatile and flexible aircraft to our fleet. Based on the experience of one year of very successful operation with our existing DA62 SurveyStar, the decision to buy two more of the same type was very well-grounded — especially in times of limited raw materials and climate change this aircraft is a big step in the right direction.” Markus Fischer, Director, Special Mission Aircraft Division at Diamond Aircraft Austria: “We have been always convinced in this new DA62 MPP survey application but we have been a bit surprised to see the massive positive market response. The business case supports our urge to innovation as we were able to book already 4+ units for 22/23.”

Micro Vortex Generators Micro Vortex Generators are small aluminium blades placed in a spanwise line aft of the leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. They control airflow over the upper surface of the wing by creating vortices that energize the boundary layer. This results in improved performance and control authority at low airspeeds and high angles of attack.

The Benefits of Micro VGs • Lower Lift Off Speed • Lower Stall Speeds • Improved Controllability • Improved Characteristics • Improved Safety • S.T.O.L. Benefits • 1 Day Installation

They help to keep you safe

ASL Camguard™ is an advanced oil supplement, F.A.A. accepted for use in most piston aircraft engines. Camguard is formulated to safeguard the investment in your aircraft engine by addressing the complex and interrelated problems of corrosion, carbon deposits and mechanical wear. Camguard combats corrosion by leaving a continuous film of inhibitor on metal surfaces. Camguard halts deposit formation, leaving your engine clean and parts free to move. So whether you fly a little or a lot, Camguard always pays dividends with decreased aircraft engine maintenance costs. Just adding 5% of ASL Camguard to your oil at every oil change provides peace of mind that comes with knowing your investment is protected.
