Surround-the-Ear Style
FAA TSO-C139a APPROVED
We’ve made clamping pressure a thing of the past.
At just 12.3 ounces, it’s among the lightest ANR headsets in aviation. The David Clark Company DC ONE-X surround-the-ear style headset offers lightweight comfort without compromising “David Clark durability”. It also offers additional comfort/ technology features that make it the most comfortable, best-value premium ANR headset in aviation.
A head pad that keeps the top of your head from sweating? That’s cool.
Featuring a unique, swivel-hinge stirrup design bends in and out, and side-to-side, the DC ONE-X virtually eliminates clamping pressure while providing a secure, comfortable fit, personalized to the contours of your head.
They don’t just look comfortable. They are comfortable. Our ultra-soft, plush leatherette ear seals are designed for maximum comfort while reducing heat buildup. ‘Memory foam’ provides a comfortable fit and perfect seal (even while wearing glasses). It’s like resting your head against your favorite pillow.
DC ONE-X headsets feature a soft, Outlast® technology head pad with vented design that actually senses and absorbs excess heat buildup from the top of your head to help prevent sweating and keep you cool and comfortable in flight. ‘Hot spots’ are virtually eliminated. We call it ‘climate control for your cockpit’. You’ll call it the most comfortable head pad you’ve ever experienced.
DC ONE-X Surround-the-Ear Style
All DC ONE-X models come with a Fly It Free for 30 Days, money back guarantee and a 5-year warranty. Visit www.davidclark.com to find the international David Clark Company dealer nearest you. .

WHELEN AEROSPACE TECHNOLOGIES RELEASES NEW PARMETHEUS G3 LANDING AND TAXI LIGHTS Sebastian, Florida-based Whelen Aerospace Technologies (WAT) has launched a new line of LED landing and taxi lights. The new Parmetheus G3 Series is 2.5 times brighter than the popular Parmetheus Plus, all while maintaining the same form, fit, and functionality of a drop-in LED replacement landing light, said the company. “This has been a long time coming,” said Tyler Wheeler, CEO of Whelen Aerospace Technologies. “Our engineers have been working diligently over the past couple years developing innovative industry leading products based on our customer feedback. Thank you for all of your input, more exciting announcements on the horizon!”
14-28 Volt Range Currently available in PAR-36 size, the G3 now operates from 14-28 volts, eliminating the need to specify voltage when ordering. Additionally, the lens is now hermetically sealed to guard against moisture intrusion.
FAA STC Whelen Aerospace Technologies has been granted FAA STC (Supplemental Type Certificate) approval for the Parmetheus G3 for both Part 23 and Part 27 Aircraft. Additional international approvals are due to follow, said Whelen. “Independent light lab tests show that the Parmetheus G3 is the brightest LED landing light available and delivers the highest output per dollar when compared to
competitor LED landing light options,” the company added.
Best Seller Since the launch of the original Parmetheus product back in 2010, Whelen has sold more than 150,000 Parmetheus and Parmetheus Plus PAR 36 units, making it “general aviation’s best-selling LED landing light of all time.” With all the Parmetheus G3’s features, combined with the WAT standard five-year warranty, WAT claims to have “again set the bar even higher for performance and value.” The new Parmetheus G3 was on display at Whelen Aerospace’s Booth during Airventure 2021 in July. Those not lucky enough to have been there can still find all WAT products and the Parmetheus G3 available for purchase at participating WAT resellers.
About WAT Whelen Aerospace Technologies says it is the global leader in high-end lighting products for the aerospace industry. WAT’s experienced staff designs, engineers, and manufactures high-quality products that provide safety, visibility, and recognition for aircraft across all platforms. As an FAA-approved production holder, Whelen Aerospace Technologies owns hundreds of STCs for aircraft landing, taxi, anti-collision and position lights.

New Garmin ‘Smart Glide’ Assists Pilot(s) Following Engine Power Loss
When Smart Glide has been activated, the system will alert the pilot with an aural message stating that Smart Glide is active while also providing a quick reference to the selected airport within glide range in both bearing and distance to enhance situational awareness. In addition, Smart Glide provides automated adjustment of select avionics settings including the changing of the primary COM standby to the airport approach or tower frequency and automatic switching of the CDI to GPS mode. If the aircraft is appropriately equipped and configured with a compatible Garmin transponder, Smart Glide also provides pilots a shortcut to tune the transponder to squawk the 7700 emergency code. If the aircraft is equipped with a compatible Garmin autopilot, Smart Glide activation will also automatically engage the autopilot to pitch for the best glide airspeed and activate GPS mode to enable navigation to the selected airport.
Access to Critical Information Using the Smart Glide Page and the Map Page of the GTN Xi, pilots can more easily access critical Smart Glide information when they need it most and to better prepare for a landing at a potentially unfamiliar airport. The Smart Glide Page displays glide speed based on the specific aircraft, airport name, an alternate airport list, arrival above ground level (AGL) altitude, longest runway information including wind components if available, as well as a Smart Glide alert banner to keep the pilot notified of glide status and any pertinent instructions.
Garmin has announced the introduction of Smart Glide, a new safety tool that helps pilots in loss of engine power emergencies by automating tasks to reduce pilot workload. In the event of the loss of engine power in a single-engine aircraft, a pilot faces the urgent, workload-intensive job of manoeuvring the aircraft from its current position to a suitable airport. Through compatible avionics, such as GTN Xi series navigators, Smart Glide provides assistance to the pilot by recommending a suitable airport estimated to be within glide range, as well as providing critical information to the pilot and optimising select avionics settings, helping save the pilot precious time and reducing their workload. Smart Glide joins Garmin Autoland as a part of the Autonomí family of autonomous flight technologies. Autoland was the recipient of the prestigious Collier Trophy last year.
Autopilot Guidance When paired with a compatible Garmin autopilot, Smart Glide can automatically engage the autopilot and pitch for the aircraft’s best glide speed while simultaneously navigating the aircraft within the vicinity of the selected airport so the pilot can execute an approach and landing. Carl Wolf, Garmin vice president of aviation sales and marketing, stated: “Garmin continues to provide pilots with safety-enhancing tools through our Autonomí family of technologies that help simplify emergencies to reduce the workload required during these task-saturated and stressful situations. “We are so proud to continue to help make aviation safer with the introduction of Smart Glide, a monumental safety enhancement available to the thousands of fielded aircraft
already equipped with the compatible Garmin avionics by automating tasks in an engine power loss emergency to help the pilot manage the situation safely.”
Activation and Airport Selection In the event of engine power loss in flight, pilots can activate Smart Glide with an optional dedicated Smart Glide button or by holding the ‘Direct To’ button for two seconds to initiate an activation. Once activated, Smart Glide recommends an airport estimated to be within glide range and automatically creates a direct-to route. Smart Glide considers several factors when choosing the recommended airport within glide range including runway length and condition; proximity; terrain; and available weather from sources such as FIS-B, SiriusXM3, and Garmin Connext weather, in addition to current measured winds calculated by the primary flight display (PFD).
The Map Page is another useful resource for pilots during a Smart Glide activation. The Glide Range Ring depicted on the Map Page shows airports within glide range and dynamically adjusts based on winds and terrain. The Map Page displays current aircraft AGL altitude, estimated AGL altitude upon arrival, bearing, as well as distance to the airport while decluttering the map.
Approach & Landing When the aircraft is within four nautical miles from the selected airport, Smart Glide will alert the pilot that they are approaching the airport environment with both an aural alert and visual banner. Within two miles of the airport, audible airport position alerts and a flashing red alert displayed on the GTN Xi will advise the pilot to resume control and begin manoeuvring for landing. In the event of an off-airport landing, Smart Glide provides audible AGL altitude alerts to help ensure the pilot is aware of the altitude while maintaining their focus on landing locations.
Smart Glide Availability In certified aircraft, Smart Glide will become available with a GTN Xi series navigator paired with a compatible Garmin flight display including the G500 TXi/G600 TXi, GI 275 electronic flight instrument, the G3X Touch, or G5 electronic flight instrument, with others to be added later, said Garmin.
If the aircraft is appropriately equipped with either a GTX 345/GTX 345R transponder or a GNX 375 acting as a transponder, or a GSR 56/GDL 69/GDL 69A with an appropriate weather subscription, Smart Glide can even consider VFR/IFR conditions when recommending the most suitable airport. Alternate airports within glide range can also be selected if the pilot desires.
“Compatible Garmin autopilots such as GFC 500 or GFC 600 can be automatically engaged when Smart Glide is activated. For aircraft without a compatible Garmin autopilot, Smart Glide will still provide critical information and features to help manage engine emergencies and help to reduce pilot workload. Further, experimental aircraft with G3X Touch and a G3X autopilot can also enable Smart Glide technology when appropriately equipped,” added the company.
In the event the system estimates there is not an airport within glide range, Smart Glide provides an aural and visual alert to the pilot, while continuing to search for an airport in range, and automatically pitching for configured best glide speed in aircraft equipped with a compatible Garmin autopilot.
Smart Glide is expected to be available as a software upgrade at no additional charge from Garmin on compatible systems in August 2021 through the Garmin Authorised Dealer network. The optional Garmin Smart Glide activation button is also available for a list price of $129.

AVIDYNE.qxp_Layout 1 13/08/2021 14:31 Page 1
AVIDYNE IFD100 APP FOR iPAD IS “A MUST HAVE FOR VFR PILOTS” Mike Salmon, Avidyne Pilot Support Representative, explains… Avidyne has always been on the cutting edge of innovation in the general aviation market. It began more than 25 years ago when they introduced the first standalone 12.7 cm Multifunction Display. This continued when they were the first to certify Big Glass Integrated Flight Decks back in 2003. Avidyne’s long history of listening to the needs of pilots continues today with their flagship IFD FMS/GPS/NAV/COM and exclusive IFD100 app for iPad.
IFD100 App: Affordable Big Glass for Your Cockpit The IFD100 app, a free download from the App Store, acts as a remote control for your panel-mounted IFD GPS navigator. The IFD100 mirrors the functions of the IFD from the iPad allowing the pilot to control the IFD GPS navigator in real-time. Imagine having another glass screen in your cockpit at no additional cost. The pilot can conveniently change frequencies, display additional pages, enter flight plans, and view charts from the iPad via integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity within the IFD FMS/GPS/NAV/COM. For the VFR pilot, the IFD100 app provides ultimate situational awareness and functionality. Furthermore, the app uses the same page-and-tab interface as the IFD which means there is very little to no additional learning curve.
Jeppesen Charts on the IFD100 The IFD100 is not just for the VFR pilot. Many instrument-rated pilots take advantage of the ability to view their Jeppesen charts on their IFD100 app; even if they own the mighty, but more compact IFD 4-Series GPS navigators. Adding charts to your Jeppesen subscription allows you to easily review approaches and plan your departure and arrival on IFD100 with ease. Like the IFD 5-Series, IFD100 will overlay your GPS position right on the chart for better situational awareness both in the air and on the taxiway.
Bigger Maps With the IFD100 app, the pilot can get a much bigger picture of their surroundings. A bigger screen means you can easily view terrain, traffic, and weather on the iPad through the wireless connection, from an egocentric and exocentric view. Avidyne’s IFD550 allows the pilot to view the pitch and bank angles on IFD100 from the IFD550’s internal Attitude Reference Sensor (ARS) from the SVS tab; just as you would on your IFD.
Split-screen Functionality If your iPad allows for the use of split-screen mode, you can run the IFD100 app simultaneously with and your favorite flying app together, on the same screen. While in landscape mode, configure the iPad for Split-screen and enjoy the benefit of your favorite aviation app (ForeFlight, SkyDemon, etc.) alongside IFD100 for ultimate control and enhanced situational awareness. As an Avidyne Pilot myself, I can attest to the amazing features of the IFD product line, the IFD100 app, and the innovation Avidyne continues to serve global aviation community. In my opinion, there is no other navigator on the market as feature-rich and easy to use than the Avidyne IFD Series of GPS/NAV/COMs.
For additional features of the IFD100 App and the IFD-Series FMS/GPS/NAV/COM visit avidyne.com or email: sgubbins@avidyne.com for more information.

“Avidyne’s IFD440 unit provides the functionality I require as a private VFR/IFR pilot. The interface is intuitive, easy to learn with excellent functionality. I’m particularly impressed with the interoperability between IFD100 app, SkyDemon, and PilotAware which allows me to operate all of my devices on one (WiFi) network, from which I can share flight plans and receive active traffic awareness.” -Johnathan Tully, UK Cessna 177B

Micro Vortex Generators Micro Vortex Generators are small aluminium blades placed in a spanwise line aft of the leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. They control airflow over the upper surface of the wing by creating vortices that energize the boundary layer. This results in improved performance and control authority at low airspeeds and high angles of attack.

CHECK YOUR INSURANCE ! Give us plenty of time to get you a Better Insurance Quote According to Chris Varley, Chairman of Export & General (E&G) Insurance, businesses are rarely proactive in looking early for better insurance premiums, which can contribute significantly to wider cost-cutting measures. “Whether you need insurance for your aircraft, hangar-keeper’s liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance, speaking to us early, perhaps a couple of months before the renewal date, can mean significant savings,” says Varley, who adds “We’re happy to remind you so feel free to let us know your current renewal dates.”

Insuring ‘The Flying Reporter’
E&G has long been an insurer that is happy to source cover for all kinds of businesses, and E&G Aviation was fortunate enough recently to find insurance for former BBC journalist/videographer Jon Hunt, best known in the GA world as The Flying Reporter.
Having left the BBC last year, Jon started to think how he could use his popular Flying Reporter brand to grow a video production business, and with that he realised having the proper insurance was critical — both for the YouTube filmmaking and his private client film production work. Both often see him filming airside — on airfields and airports, on the ramp and even in/around other people’s aircraft. Jon said: “Having gone independent as a video producer from my job as a BBC reporter and videographer, I needed Airside Liability and Professional Indemnity
insurance. The difficulty I had was the broker I was using couldn’t find me the right cover, which was frustrating — and I thought I’d never get cover.
“But then I spoke with Chris Varley at Export & General, and he got sensible quotes for me within 24 hours. Chris knew the right people to deal with and completely understood what I needed — which all made it a pleasant experience.” I am available for hire for video work and intend to continue making interesting flying videos, while also developing useful aviation-related content for my subscribers. You can check out The Flying Reporter’s latest content at www.youtube.com/theflyingreporter or visit his website at www.jonhunt.net for further information.

SEPTEMBER 2021
Popeye the Aviator! By Jamie Chalkley As ever in aviation, it’s always useful to have a ‘Plan B’ up your sleeve! The original plan for this month’s featured aircraft was a rather special Spitfire. Genuinely, a headline aircraft for the Warbird world that you are not going to want to miss. But, for reasons involving various time deadlines and non-compliant weather windows, I’ve had switch things around. Our “to be completed” Spitfire mission will include an aerial task to achieve a very special set of air-to-air photographs for your viewing pleasure, which promise to be nothing short of stunning! However, due to the aforementioned change, I’m instead reaching for the back-up plan for this issue. So, while Plan A’s photo mission remains pending, I take great pleasure in introducing you to none other than global superstar and cultural icon: “Popeye!” Bet you weren’t expecting me to say that?! But in a best-of-both-worlds mix, Popeye is not just an affectionate childhood memory but also one of the nicest examples of a flying Harvard in the world! Confused? read on…
‘A Harvard Education’ The ‘Harvard’ offers an excellent steppingstone from the world of GA aircraft, in particular from lower powered classic aircraft, into the world of high-performance Warbird aircraft. The type was originally of American origin and was designed by ‘North American’ as an advanced fighter trainer

for military pilots during WWII, to help progress them through combat and advanced pilot training. The British forces placed orders as early as 1938 and were actively training in them before the beginning of WWII. Indeed, could the Harvard be the most widely used type of military trainer of its generation? I counted 62 countries whose military forces used the aircraft as not only an advanced training aircraft but also, in some cases, as a combat aircraft as well (some armed with .303 machine guns, rockets and 20 lb bombs!).
The Story of Popeye After World War II and under the Mutual Defence Assistance Program (MDAP), Canadian Car & Foundry (CC&F) in Fort William, Ontario, built the Harvard Mk. IV aircraft. This was similar to the US Air Force T-6G Texan. CC&F built 555 Mk. IVs in total, of which many were supplied to European air forces to train postwar military pilots, while a number of these also went on to serve in post WWII conflicts. Our featured Harvard was built in 1953 by Canadian Car & Foundry. The aircraft served in Germany as ‘AA + 682’ and was used to train German military pilots through to 1955. The aircraft then moved to the Portuguese Air Force. In 1964 it was re-equipped as a ground-attack aircraft and sent to the Portuguese African

colonies of Angola and Mozambique. After ten years of conflict a ceasefire was agreed (in September 1974) and the aircraft was stationed on display in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. In the late 1980’s the aircraft was purchased by the South African Air Force and remained with this air force until it retired its Harvard fleet in 1995. So, after a long military service of some 42 years, the aircraft finally entered civilian life with a private collector.

for the Popeye nose art which was added as a personal touch). In 2019 she was flown to Oshkosh where the aircraft received much praise for its concours condition. This aircraft remains a highly respected example to this day. For those already enjoying high performance Warbird flying, or for those looking to retrace the learning steps of many pilots before them, the Harvard is very hard to beat!
That’s when the story of this Harvard really starts to stand out from the crowd. The owner wanted a total ‘ground up’ rebuild, not just a restoration, but complete disassembly. The airframe was put in a jig and restored to ‘as new condition’. Works included the replacement of all life-limited parts, while the engine (600 hp P&W R-1340) and propeller were both zero-timed. The wings and fuselage were completely re-skinned, all hoses, cables and wiring were replaced, and the canopy was refurbished and fitted with new plexiglass. Both cockpits were restored to original condition (as far as possible save for any modern requirements). The painstaking and ‘no expense spared’ rebuild was finally completed in the USA during 2018 when she was flight tested in July of the same year. The aircraft took to the skies once more in its original West German Luftwaffe livery (except

A Family Affair If you’ve already flown the Harvard and fancy meeting it’s big brother, then you might also consider trying out another North American masterpiece, the mighty T-28 Trojan! The T-28 was designed just after WWII, primarily as a trainer for the F-86 Sabre, but also proved itself to be an effective counterinsurgency and ground-attack aircraft during the Vietnam War. The Trojan is powered by the ‘huge’ Wright R1820-86 Cyclone, 9-cylinder air-cooled radial engine which pushes out an impressive 1,425 hp! The thrust is provided by a large three-blade propeller and for slowing down a bit there’s an effective and useful belly-mounted speed brake! The aircraft has amazing performance, very similar to the P-51 Mustang through much of its envelope and with superb handling characteristics. A notable bonus is the stunning view from the cockpit — with a high seating position and large canopy you really can see everything equally well in flight as during the ground roll. An aircraft often overlooked by many (although not literally because it stands so tall!), some might say the wheel is at the wrong end, but for those that fly them, people always land with a smile on their face!

What’s the Latest on the King Air Market? How is the pre-owned Beechcraft King Air market performing currently? Matt Harris speaks to Jeremy Cox and Tony Kioussis to get their insider’s insights and tips for buyers and sellers… he same year the Beechcraft King Air hit the market, chart-toppers ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ (The Beetles) and ‘Oh Pretty Woman’ (Roy Orbison) rang out over the airwaves. And though Mary Poppins was the highest-grossing movie of the year, her novel mode of transportation by umbrella was unimpressive compared to the new twin-engine turboprop emerging off the production line in Wichita, Kansas. The year was 1964, and the King Air 90 had just been certified. But nobody then could have expected that aircraft to spawn a family of more than 20 upgrades and variations – each one broadening the capabilities of the former, or tapping into new markets and mission needs. As of today, over 7,500 King Airs have rolled down the production line and into the hands of a truly diverse range of owners. Without much fanfare, the 90-series only ended production in early 2021. “You just have to look at their track record,” Jeremy Cox, Senior Accredited Appraiser and President of JetValues-Jeremy told AvBuyer. “Almost half of the early King Air 90, King Air A90 and King Air B90 models are still in-service today. What keeps them appealing on today’s market? They’re rugged and dependable, providing amazing value for money.” According to Tony Kioussis, President of Asset Insight, “The aircraft has been an industry workhorse since its introduction to the market, due to its reliability, payload, and range capability. Their value retention down the years has been exceptional.” [Cox notes that older King Airs are retaining residual values above 40% – or between 40%-60%, to be more precise – which is pretty good compared to many business jets.] “While it is difficult to identify twin-engine turboprop contemporaries for pre-1990 King Air models,” adds Kioussis, “overall values have held up relatively well for the older King Airs, especially when you consider their age. “But buyers need to run detailed maintenance analytics before committing to any aircraft,” he warns. “These older, pre-1990 King Airs may have lower prices, but they don’t all represent good value when you factor future maintenance costs.”
An Attractive Combination With so many variants of King Air models produced down the years, and agreement that they’ve performed remarkably well on the pre-owned turboprop market, which particular models are catching the eye? “From a marketability standpoint, the King Air B200 models produced after 2000, the King Air 350, and the King Air 350i are the most eye-catching, based on their Maintenance Exposure to Ask Price (ETP) Ratio,” Kioussis reveals.
28 PISTON BUYER EUROPE SEPTEMBER 2021
Asset Insight uses the ETP Ratio as an indicator of an aircraft’s marketability, deriving the ratio from dividing an aircraft’s Maintenance Exposure (the financial liability accrued with respect to future scheduled maintenance events) by its Ask Price. “Having said that, pre-owned market availability across all of our tracked King Air models is only 5.6% of the active fleet, and all have been actively trading,” Kioussis adds. “An original King Air C90 can easily be upgraded to a King Air C90GTx look-a-like, for about a quarter of the price of a new aircraft,” Cox shares. “The same goes for an old King Air B200, which can be made to look like a King Air 250. For that reason, I’d say those two models are catching my eye.”
The Impact of New-Model King Air Upgrades As mentioned, production of the King Air C90GTx ceased without ceremony earlier in 2021, while Beechcraft focussed on updating its King Air 250 and 350 series with the King Air 260 and 360, respectively. Some owners may naturally be wondering what the impact will be on their older aircraft – particularly owners of the now out-of-production King Air 90-series. But Cox offers some reassuring words: “When you consider the upgrades available to the 90 Series, it’s fair to predict that the 90-series will stay solid for a very long time,” he says. “Take, for instance, the Blackhawk 135A engine upgrade that is available; swept blade propellers, pitot cowls with aerodynamic stacks, nacelle wing lockers, and dual aft-body strakes. “With myriad avionics retrofits like FADEC, EFIS, doppler weather radar also available, there are plenty of options for King Air owners to keep their older aircraft up-to-date, functional, and attractive on the market.” “Upgraded models will certainly have greater market appeal,” Kioussis adds, “and they are likely to achieve higher pricing – but keep in mind that all King Air turboprop models are in demand at the moment. “Buyers may prefer an upgraded aircraft, but they are not necessarily in the driving seat when it comes to pricing – and that includes older models.”
Tips for Buyers and Sellers of King Airs Given the market today, there’s good reason for both sellers, and buyers in the King Air market to be tactical. Some sellers will have thought carefully about their strategy and have a genuine need to sell, but Cox warns those who see only the higher sale price as their motivating factor. “My first question to sellers is ‘Do you really want to sell?’” Cox reveals. current ‘bull market’ much akin to a latter-day ‘Gold Rush’ in Cox’s view, “sellers need to consider whether they will get value for money by selling their King Air and buying another aircraft at this time. “Sometimes it’s better to spend the money with an MRO to upgrade, instead of going the traditional route, usually to buy a step-up aircraft that already has the upgrades that you’re seeking,” he suggests. And Kioussis advises sellers not to become greedy. “Sellers can extract value from their asset in the current market, assuming they understand the condition of their asset relative to other available units. Remember, sellers (and their brokers) will still need to justify a figure that appears to be high. “We are constantly surprised at people’s pricing expectations – both high and low – based on the maintenance quality and equity we see on their aircraft, compared to the market average.” And at a time when the fleet for sale percentage for all King Air models is low, Kioussis encourages buyers that the number of units listed for sale still continues to provide choice. “No matter what the seller is expecting relative to pricing, a buyer can justify their offer price if they base it on the aircraft’s specification and maintenance condition,” Kioussis explains. “That assumes the buyer runs the necessary – and inexpensive – analytics. “If, as a buyer, you are not able to do this, an experienced broker should have little trouble providing you with the information you need to make a solid, reasonable offer that can be justified,” he concludes. AERO-DIENST
DLR research aircraft ISTAR Aero-Dienst, the Nuremberg-based provider of business aviation and air ambulance services, has won a four-year contract with the German Aerospace Center (the Deutsches Zentrum für Luftund Raumfahrt, or DLR) to maintain its Falcon 2000LX EASy ISTAR (In-flight Systems & Technology Airborne Research) aircraft. The contract covers all work to be done on the Falcon 2000LX that is not covered by DLR’s own maintenance organisation. The scope ranges from base maintenance such as 12M/24M/36M inspections to special inspections of engines or structural parts that are required in connection with internally or externally commissioned research projects involving the ISTAR. “We are extremely pleased to have been able to conclude this four-year contract with the German Aerospace Center,” remarked Florian Heinzelmann, Dassault Maintenance Manager at Aero-Dienst. “The confidence placed in us is the result of our quality work as well as the performance and enthusiasm of our Falcon team. This definitely underscores our capabilities on the global stage.”
Capable Aircraft With the conclusion of the initial conversion phase at Dassault according to the DLR’s specifications 18 months ago, ISTAR has become the newest member of the DLR fleet, which features a total of 12 aircraft (including helicopters). When fully equipped, ISTAR will be capable of testing the flight characteristics of new aircraft designs under real-life operating conditions either directly or virtually, and either manned or unmanned. The aircraft is used to ascertain data for optimised aerodynamics, flight guidance and flight control. It also opens up the way to another major step towards digital transformation in aviation: DLR will create the first ever digital twin for ISTAR that will accompany it for its entire service life. “This research aircraft plays an essential role in the development of new, environmentally friendly and efficient
aircraft, engines and assistance systems, because the technology needed for climate-neutral aviation will be pushed ahead with the aid of ISTAR,” explained Martin Gestwa, Head of the Research Flight department and Technical Operations at DLR. “In view of extensive modifications to DLR research aircraft, maintenance and repair procedures differ significantly from those used for unmodified aircraft. So, we are very grateful to have found an extremely competent partner for our ISTAR research aircraft in Aero-Dienst.”
Aero-Dienst Role Major maintenance work, such as the annual inspections, will be carried out by the Aero-Dienst team directly at the ISTAR base in Braunschweig. This allows the DLR specialists to make efficient use of the research aircraft’s downtime for instrument installations and modifications as part of upcoming research projects. For its Falcon team, Aero-Dienst employs around 30 technicians with decades of experience and expertise in the maintenance of business jets from the Falcon series. Depending on the scope and type of work involved, specialists from the airframe, avionics or engine divisions will be assigned to the ISTAR. “We’re proud to be indirectly involved in aviation research projects that are so important for aerodynamics, aeroelasticity, structural engineering and propulsion,” said Aero-Dienst’s Managing Director, Viktor Peters. “We will also be using the know-how, expertise and experience of our teams to provide the DLR with our utmost in flexible support in relevant areas for future research projects, such as experimental aircraft flight control and in-flight simulation.” In addition to its headquarters in Nuremberg, Aero-Dienst also operates a maintenance station in Oberpfaffenhofen and has been successfully operating two stations in Austria—at the airports in Vienna and Klagenfurt—for many years. Its component shop in Landsberg am Lech allows Aero-Dienst to provide fast and local repairs for maintenance operators in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

AERIAL BROADCASTING: THE BIRD’S EYE VIEW
The News, Weather & Sports Reporters of
Aerial Work Aviation
AERIAL FILMING LIVE BROADCAST

www.gbhelicopters.com
Do you know what Aerial Broadcasting is? Or, do you know what this dedicated Aerial Work aviation sector does? Patrick Ryan "gets the scoop" for you and highlights many informative & fascinating aspects of this unique "News Reporting" aviation business sector.
LEAD-IN
Imagine! A television helicopter covers the story of a high pursuit of police vehicles racing after a suspected carjacking vehicle or giving ‘play-by-play’ of a major sporting event like the Tour de France. Every person watching their TV, computer, smartphone, or listening on their car radio gets the same eyewitness view of the event as it unfolds in real time; better yet an aerial view rather than looking over the yellow ‘Police Line’ tape. How does this happen? It happens because of the dedication of the Aerial Broadcast aviation sector.
STAND UP
Unlike the Aerial Cinematography sector of Aerial Work aviation, which artistically pre-plans and choreographs exciting motion pictures scenes over a long production timeline, the Aerial Broadcasting sector’s job is to bring you ‘On the Spot’ images in ‘Real-Time’ — as it happens, as if you were there now.
Major networks in television, internet, radio, and newspapers, all of whom wish to boost their reporting capabilities to their viewers or listeners with aerial footage of short notice or long-reaching media events, are increasingly relying on aerial footage or reports from the Aerial Broadcasting sector to provide them the ‘edge’ in today’s increasingly competitive media market. The media race fuels the need for an aerial platform that can provide unparalleled market penetration and coverage options. This need is a critical option in special event coverage, breaking news events that cannot be captured by traditional land-based video coverage, or whose breadth of technical capabilities requires a quicker response and more flexible coverage option.
REPORTERS ASSIGNMENT
What is Aerial Broadcasting? In the world of news, weather, and sporting event reporting, Aerial Broadcasting supports or, better yet, provides services to the Electronic News
WIR SPRECHEN DEUTSCH - ASTRID AYLING: +44 (0)208 549 5024 - Astrid@avbuyer.com
Gathering (ENG) sector of the media industry. ENG is when journalists and media networks use electronic video and audio technologies to gather and present news either within a news station or outside the station. When it comes to outside the news station, obviously Aerial Broadcasting supports the branch of ENG, which is the Outside Broadcast (OB) function. In the world of ENG, Aerial Broadcasting is tasked with recording and transmitting audio and video footage in real time to a Remote Pickup Unit (RPU). Then the RPU transmits the audio and video back to the television station, where it joins the main air chain. Sometimes several Aerial Broadcast aircraft are used to relay the signal across vast distances so they can down-link to a satellite truck, production truck, and even regular telephone line if necessary.
BEAT REPORTING
What are the different services Aerial Broadcasting firms providing? In general, Aerial Broadcasting firms are SEPTEMBER 2021 AERIAL WORK EUROPE 31

unmanned aircraft is a perfect tool to leverage for this type of task. The only way to do so is to get an in-depth localised area view of the situation from an elevated position. The aerial unmanned aircraft video provides a spontaneous ‘upper hand’ sense of scale in a disaster and a different perspective from the smartphone footage of those at the scene. From a business ‘Bottom line’ perspective, many broadcasters don’t have the budget or means to hire or operate manned aerial broadcast aircraft, but using unmanned aircraft for ‘One-Off’ news reporting is a costeffective alternative. However, the use of unmanned aircraft presents both great opportunity and potential risk for broadcasters. Again, unmanned aircraft can be cheaper to fly than helicopters and potentially get closer to the action. However, on the other hand, unmanned technology is still emerging, and the regulatory standards (without fines or penalties) to ensure such platforms are safely integrated within all airspaces are still being developed. With this, broadcasters risk relying on non-established aviation capability vs. established platforms, especially when budgets get tight, and time is critical. Here is a small example of the types of unmanned aircraft that leading Aerial Broadcasting firms are lending towards: • DJI, Inspire II (medium Lift) • VulcanUAV, Raven (Heavy Lift) • Freefly, Alta 8 (Heavy Lift)

independent commercial companies that partner with numerous news outlets, radio stations, and newspapers to capture breaking news, celebrity movements, and milestone events. In addition, these firms will often paint and brand their aircraft with their client’s logo or station identifier. Besides capturing live footage or news footage, the Aerial Broadcast sector also supports Electronic Field Production (EFP). EFP uses both Electronic News Gathering practices and studio production processes which takes place in the field rather than in a studio. While Electronic News Gathering footage is shot quickly to respond to a news event in real-time, Electronic Field Production is thoroughly planned to provide optimal audio, lighting, and video outside the studio. Some examples of EFP include sporting events and large entertainment events, whereas events requiring ENG filming include natural disasters, crime scenes, and accidents.
GETTING THE SCOOP
What are the planes and kit used by Aerial Broadcasting? Depending on the story, the type of aircraft and the ENG/EFP systems deployed can vary — from a street reporter using a mini unmanned aircraft to record a breaking story at street level, transmitting the image via smartphone, to — at the other end of the spectrum — a King Air 90 relaying audio and visual signals to a Remote Pickup Point.
AIRCRAFT
As for aircraft and like so many Aerial Work sectors, Aerial Broadcasting leverages many different types of aircraft and platforms based on the client’s needs. However, the order of dominance is helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, followed by Lighter Than Air (LTA) platforms, and unmanned aircraft.
FIXED-WING
Fixed-wing aircraft are efficient when used for longendurance, high-altitude operations and are quieter than a helicopter when integrated with a ‘stealth sound suppressor’ or ‘Hush Kit’ for noise-sensitive events. Therefore, fixed-wing platforms are in high demand in covering broad areas and extended events (e.g., sporting events and natural disasters, etc.), transmission relay platforms, and equipment transportation. Several of the types of fixed-wing aircraft used in Aerial Broadcasting are: • Helio Aircraft Company, Helio Courier • Cessna/Textron Aviation, C-172 • Beechcraft, King Air 90
LIGHTER-THAN-AIR (LTA)
Like fixed-wing Aircraft, LTA platforms (Blimps, Airships, Zeppelins, etc.) are primarily used to cover sporting and open-air venue events. Modern LTAs are highly mobile, flexible, quiet, and stable camera platforms, giving extended time-on-station and other advantages when delivering a wide-area perspective. Some of the types of LTAs that have, will, or are supporting Aerial Broadcasting are: • Goodyear, "Wingfoot" Serious • Aeros, 40E Sky Dragon • MetLife, "Snoopy" Serious
Unmanned Aircraft
Using unmanned aircraft (drones) for news reporting or capturing the action of an open-air event is a leading-edge and growing way to gather information in Aerial Broadcasting. Due to escalating conflicts and natural disasters worldwide, reporters need to get to the heart of the action at the street or neighborhood level; an
ROTOR-WING
By far, the helicopter is the dominant platform in this Aerial Work sector. Helicopters are perfect for mid- to low-altitude observations with high-resolution broadcast cameras. In addition, helicopters are cost-effective when covering large metropolitan areas and responding to quick regionalised events. Plus, the flexibility of helicopters makes it easy for these platforms to film in congested or remote locations. Some of the preferred helicopters utilised by leading Aerial Broadcasting firms are: • Robinson Helicopter Company, R-44 Raven II • Airbus, AS355 Twin Squirrel • Bell Helicopter, Bell 407 32 AERIAL WORK EUROPE SEPTEMBER 2021

When it comes to the systems and kit Aerial Broadcasters utilise, they operate some of the most leading-edge equipment in the industry from companies such as GSS, Shotover, Churchill Navigation, Sony, and Fuji. Designing and building an ENG aircraft is a significant engineering task. A fully outfitted television news aircraft has multiple cameras, record/playback capability, switching, monitoring, off-air receiver, and microwave links. In a genuine sense, it is a complete airborne television studio, including a studio-to-transmitter link. However, the design & integration task is complicated because space is limited in most aircraft, while heat, power loads, and vibration are extreme. Furthermore, all equipment must be integrated physically and electrically according to airworthiness standards. Specifically, the general type of equipment or configurations on most Aerial Broadcasting aircraft include: • Cameras & Lenses (GSS – Cineflex V14, Shotover – F1, Fujinon - Premista series, etc.) • Wireless Camera Links (SVP – Wireless Camera System, etc.) • Video & Audio Recorders (Remote Geosystems – geoDVR, geoDSR, etc.) • Mission Management software/hardware (Remote Geosystems – LineVision, etc., Churchill Navigation - BEAR) • Transmission Down Links (SVP – Aircraft Down Link System, etc.) • Antennas (RF Up-Link, Down-Link, Microwave, etc.) • Handheld controls/Operator Workstations (Camera Operator, Transmission Operator, etc.) • Exterior Sensor/Camera Mounts (Airborne Technologies – Carbon Fiber Mounts, etc.) • Interior Camera Mounts (Tylor - Mingyro Mounts, etc.)
ROVING REPORTERS
What is it like to be an Aerial Broadcaster or, better yet, a Broadcasting Crew? A fully manned Aerial Broadcasting aircrew consists of a Pilot, Camera Operator, and Transmission/Production Technician. As you can imagine, the type of flying Aerial Broadcasting crews conduct is challenging and dynamic, like so many Aerial Work sectors. When Aerial Broadcast aircrews are on the scene, be it a ‘Breaking News’ event or covering a professional golf tournament, the crew is probably juggling six different radio frequencies, continuously communicating with air traffic control, media network ground sites, studio technicians, and even news-sportscasters. Besides this, the crews must maintain their airmanship discipline to ensure their flight doesn’t turn into the next ‘Breaking News’ in itself. Because most Aerial Broadcasting flights are conducted at low altitudes and speeds, crews have to maintain the correct position and control and watch out for towers — including high-voltage

power lines and even migrating birds. In addition, in the mountain regions, they contend with unpredictable winds and density altitude conditions that can challenge the performance of any aircraft and crew. It goes without saying that Aerial Broadcasting crews fly entirely by visual flight rules. So, besides flying ‘low & slow’, crews will frequently fly in restricted airspace over cities, nuclear power plants, government installations, and over nature areas to get the story, i.e., a challenge when it comes to coordinating and flying at the same time. When it comes to working conditions and flight hours, it can vary from sitting on standby and waiting for ‘Breaking News’ events, to being on the road for three weeks and flying every day covering a major sporting event. For instance, the helicopter crews of Hélicoptères de France (Hdf), who cover the Tour de France with three helicopters and crews annually, amass about 110 flight hours per crewmember during the coverage.
FAST FORWARD
So, how does the future look for the Aerial Broadcasting sector? Undoubtedly, people today demand more highquality imagery than ever around the clock, and this demand will not change anytime soon. With this and with the Aerial Broadcast sector controlling the view from the sky, Aerial Broadcasting will continue to be in demand from major news networks to small radio stations. However, with technology evolving at ‘Mach’ speed, the capabilities and systems Aerial Broadcasters leverage today will change, i.e., platforms, cameras, datalinks, processors will all miniaturise and have better connectivity. Maybe not in the near future, and not for more extensive area coverage, but media studios and street reporters will rely less and less on traditional aerial platforms for ‘one-off’ stories. The individual reporter will be able to report live using mini-unmanned aircraft carried in their backpacks, i.e., the beginning of the next new breed of Aerial Broadcasters.
THE FINAL SOUND BITE
So, as you can see, Aerial Broadcasting is more than a solo pilot announcing traffic conditions over a major metropolitan city or producing blockbuster movies like their Aerial Cinematography colleagues. Instead, the Aerial
SAILGP
Broadcasting sector is a focused and well-organised Electronic News Gathering (ENG) specialised team in the air. Additionally, Aerial Broadcasting is not just concerned with capturing images but also processing them, transmitting them, and more. The next time you see an Aerial Broadcast aircraft flying over a sporting venue, or you watch ‘live’ aerial

captured images during a ‘Breaking News’ media event, think of the unique aircraft, technology, and highly skilled aircrew professionals that bring you real-time images in a quality format within seconds. Without Aerial Broadcasting, we as humans would be deprived of the best perspective for learning and being informed, i.e., ‘The Birds Eye View!’ I

EUROPEAN ROTORS 2021
Helicopters to the Rescue Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) are an indispensable part of a functioning health system. Helicopters have saved lives thousands of times. At EUROPEAN ROTORS, the new VTOL show and safety conference in Cologne in November, HEMS will be an important topic, as operators, manufacturers and authorities will meet there to present innovations and discuss new developments.
Helicopters save lives. Day after day, around the world. They don’t need runways thanks to their unique ability to land and take off vertically, so they can be at the scene of an accident or a disaster, bringing help and getting patients to hospitals faster than any other mode of transport. World-famous helicopter pioneer Igor Sikorsky said in 1967: “If a man is in need of rescue, an airplane can come in and throw flowers on him, and that’s just about all. But a direct lift aircraft could come in and save his life.” His words are still valid today. Europe has a tightly woven network of air rescue services that utilises helicopters. Air rescue is organised differently in different countries — some rely on state organisations for HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Services); others use publicprivate partnerships or commercially operated helicopters. In the United Kingdom, there is a large number of regional rescue helicopter operators. In the UK and Northern Ireland alone, 44 helicopters fly in the HEMS role.
ADAC Luftrettung — Offering Air Rescue Services Since 1970 ADAC Luftrettung has been providing air rescue services in Germany since 1970 and has served as a role model for other countries in the past. Today it operates more than 50 helicopters, which took off on 51,749 missions last year. 61 percent of these were for primary patient care, 21 percent were for primary transport, while only 9 percent were secondary missions, and a further 9 percent were missions where no assistance was required. By far the most missions were carried out by the Berlinbased rescue helicopter Christoph 31. It took off on 2,936 missions last year — an amazing average of over 8 missions a day! In 2020, the helicopters of the DRF Luftrettung flew a total of 36,372 missions from 29 air rescue stations in Germany. HEMS operators are advancing helicopter and aeromedical equipment technology by purchasing new aircraft as well as more modern equipment. 40 HELICOPTER BUYER EUROPE SEPTEMBER 2021

In December 2020, DRF Luftrettung took delivery of its first H145 with a five-blade rotor at the Airbus Helicopters factory in Donauwörth. From there, a DRF Luftrettung crew transferred the brand new helicopter to Rheinmünster to the operation centre of the non-profit air rescue organisation. There, DRF technicians installed a weather radar in the nose of the H145 and the cabin equipment.
HEMS Operators are Pushing Innovations Airbus Helicopters presented the revised helicopter to the public for the first time at the Heli-Expo in March 2019. The new five-blade main rotor instead of the previously used four-blade rotor allows the rotorcraft to carry 150 kilograms more load. The maximum take-off weight of the H145 is now 3,800 kilograms. According to the manufacturer, the simple design of the new bearingless main rotor will facilitate maintenance and further improve the H145’s operational capability and reliability. At the same time, the flight will be more comfortable for the crew and passengers due to a lower vibration level. The smaller rotor diameter allows the H145 to operate in a more confined environment than before. Other, less noticeable, modifications to the new version concern connectivity and better
maintainability of the aircraft, which is powered by two Safran Arriel 2E engines. For example, there is a WiFi connection in the cockpit that allows crews to transfer data from their tablet directly to the onboard computer. EASA had certified the new H145 version in June 2020. DRF started operating the new H145 in March this year.
Swiss Air Rescue In addition to a large fleet of currently 18 helicopters, the Swiss air rescue organisation REGA also operates three Bombardier Challenger ambulance jets for repatriation flights. It is funded by 3.625 million patrons. Rega’s fleet includes seven H145s from Airbus Helicopters and eleven Da Vinci helicopters from Leonardo Helicopters. The helicopter was developed by the manufacturer in collaboration with Rega and is optimised for demanding missions in the mountains. Its twelve operational bases are distributed throughout Switzerland in such a way that the helicopters can reach any place in Switzerland (with the exception of the canton of Valais) within a 15minute flight. In 2020, the 18 REGA helicopters took off from their twelve operational bases on 13,253 missions. This was 8.1 per cent more than in

the previous year and more than ever before in the history of the Swiss air rescue organisation. Hospitalto-hospital transfer flights in particular increased for Rega in 2020. Their number was 2,614, almost 10 per cent higher than in 2019. To mark its 50th anniversary in 2018, the Swiss operator Air Zermatt had ordered a second Bell 429 from Bell Helicopter in Texas for air rescue missions in the Swiss mountains. The helicopter arrived in Switzerland just in time for the anniversary and complements a helicopter of the same type that has been in service since 2012. EMS equipment is installed in the rotorcraft which can be flown with night vision goggles (NVG). As additional equipment, it has a winch and a double external cargo hook.
Special Equipment to Transport COVID-patients The outbreak of the coronavirus in spring of 2020 had triggered a global crisis that has brought normal life to a standstill and pushed the capacity of health care systems worldwide to their limits. Hospitals in particularly affected regions, such as Lombardy in Italy, or Paris and the Alsace in France, were being overrun by a "tsunami of patients" and were unable to provide adequate care to all patients. To manage care effectively, patients were evacuated to hospitals elsewhere in the country and abroad, which still had sufficient capacity of intensive care beds and ventilators. In addition to the specially equipped Medevac aircraft of the various armed forces, a large number of civil helicopters were also used. The special characteristics of the rotary wing aircraft allowed a gentle and fast transport of COVID-19 patients from one hospital directly to another. HEMS operators such as Luxembourg Air Rescue, ADAC Luftrettung, DRF, Rega and Sécurité Civile, alongside others, have flown many COVID-19-patients to hospitals in the country and abroad for intensive care treatment. In 2020, Swiss operator Rega for example transported 456 patients infected with COVID-19 onboard its aircraft. In the UK the British Helicopter Association had successfully organised numerous
helicopters amongst its member operators to support the UK Government’s crisis response activity. Helicopters have once again proven their importance and service to society during the biggest health crisis in recent memory.
far. ADAC HEMS Academy is an exhibitor at EUROPEAN ROTORS in Cologne in November this year.
Luxembourg Air Rescue (LAR) and DRF Luftrettung were honoured with the Adenauer de Gaulle Prize 2020 for their services in coping with the COVID 19 pandemic. The Commissioner for Franco-German Cooperation, Minister of State Michael Roth, and the French Ambassador to Luxembourg, Bruno Perdu, presented the award to representatives of DRF and LAR at a ceremony at Neumünster Abbey in Luxembourg on 21 June.
HEMS operations are a major topic at EUROPEAN ROTORS, the new annual show for the VTOL industry, which will be held in Cologne, Germany (16 to 18 November). There will be a dedicated HEMS conference as part of the educational programme at EUROPEAN ROTORS in which high-level speakers from different countries discuss the latest challenges and developments in the HEMS sector.
The two organisations were honoured for their crossborder commitment to patients in the Corona pandemic. Both had implemented solidarity and neighbourly help in a truly European sense in a very challenging time and had thus made a decisive contribution to overcoming the Corona crisis. Training of HEMS crews is extremely important for the success of any mission. The HEMS Academy, the first international training centre for helicopter pilots and medical crews, is located in St. Augustin near Bonn in Germany. It’s a subsidiary of the charitable ADAC Luftrettung and was founded in 2009. It is an integrated training centre for professional helicopter pilots, doctors and TC-HEMS and operates three flight simulators. 40+ operators from all over the world have trained their crews at HEMS Academy so In 2020, the 18 helicopters strong Rega
fleet took off on 13,253 missions. © Rega

Presentations at the conference include: • Quo vadis HEMS? • When pure power does not help anymore – The vortex ring state • Next generation of aircraft for HEMS • Initial helicopter pilot training HEMS • Realistic training in a safe environment – Virtual opportunities • Simulation training in acute medical care • Cross professional competence in HEMS • What makes emergency medicine different in HEMS? • Flying in icing conditions • COVID-19 pandemic: The growing challenges for a HEMS operator • Requirements and practicability hoist operations at night in the Alpine environment • Panel discussion “HEMS rulemaking tasks” For the first time, the European Helicopter Association (EHA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have joined forces to create EUROPEAN ROTORS, a global networking platform for the VTOL industry. The show aims to bring together the entire rotorcraft industry as well as the various stakeholders. It will cover all aspects of VTOL mission types, from HEMS/SAR, police/public safety, disaster relief, firefighting, passenger transport and offshore missions to smart city/urban air mobility and new technologies and innovations. EUROPEAN ROTORS is experiencing strong support from the market. Over 100 exhibitors have already registered, including market leaders such as Airbus Helicopters, Bell, Leonardo Helicopters, Robinson, Safran Helicopter Engines, Boeing Global Services, H+S Aviation Limited, Pratt & Whitney Canada, RUAG, ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik GmbH, Aerometals and others. Ireland’s Only Female ‘Winchman’… Sarah Courtney is a helicopter winchman and advanced paramedic with the Irish Coast Guard, working with Rescue 117 in County Waterford. Originally from Cork, she now lives in Waterford.
I’m the only female winchman in Ireland, so when I started, the lads and everyone said, “What do we call you?” They just call me winchman and that’s how it should be. It’s a generic term but just because the word ‘man’ is in it, that doesn’t make it specific to gender.
“I’m the only female winchman in Ireland. I was adamant we kept the term” —
The patter on a job is a learned language and it’s crucial that no words are thrown in there that can be confusing, like what you call someone in the moment. There’s no time for interrupting, or pausing, and every second counts, so I was adamant we keep the term winchman. It’s not about me being a female and it’s kind of refreshing to highlight to people that it’s not about gender, it’s about doing the job. The job makes no concessions to being female; you can either do it or you can’t, so gender really isn’t an issue.
Search & Rescue I’m winchman on Rescue 117, which is the Waterford-based Irish Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter. CHC Helicopter is the company we work for, and it provides search-and-rescue services to the Irish Coast Guard. There are four bases nationwide — in Waterford, Dublin, Sligo and Shannon. The jobs we get include search and rescue, missing persons, responding to offshore trawlers, and issues with people working on tankers or any of the ferries. There is a huge number of people on Irish waters at any one time and, since Covid-19, people have been flocking to the coastline. But people are also hiking more, so we respond to a lot of mountainrescue calls for people missing or injured in inaccessible places or high up somewhere.
Sarah Courtney
aspects. I thought of medicine or nursing as potential career paths, but once I considered the ambulance, I was bulletproof on it. For 12 years I worked for the ambulance service in the midwestern region. I started as a paramedic (In 2008 I trained on the first ever National Ambulance Service Student Paramedic course) and then trained as an advanced paramedic. As an advanced paramedic, you have a different level of skills, such as advanced intubation and life support and different medications you can use. I worked as a solo responder in a rapid-response vehicle, so I could respond on my own or be called out to give a different level of support to an ambulance crew.
Crew’s a Team There are four crew on a helicopter call. Up front you have the captain and the co-pilot, then in the back there is a winch operator and the winchman. The two in the back have to be, at minimum, paramedics, but I’m an advanced paramedic. The glory shot of the job is always the winchman, because we go out the door and on to a moving deck or a cliff face. It is risky, but the winch operator has the responsibility of guiding and gauging everything properly, engaging with the pilot and managing all those components, as well as then participating in treating the patient when they’ve been retrieved and brought on board.
Career Path I first had the idea of a career in the ambulance service after my sister was in an accident. She was lucky, she was fine, but while I was in the hospital with her, I was really interested in the medical
Then, when I heard they were doing recruiting for the helicopters, I went for it. The process is very thorough, and they leave no stone unturned in assessing if you’re capable of the work. There are nine stages over one year, from fitness and strength to aviation, water confidence, a flight test, medical aptitude, psychometric tests, and an interview. Thankfully it worked out and I got the job. I started as a winchman and then once I gain a lot of experience, I’ll have the opportunity to be a winch operator. CHC is quite proactive making opportunities available to women and encouraging women to apply for this kind of work. I love my job. It’s not until you’re in it that you get what’s involved and it’s quite niche and specialised, but I’m passionate about it. Kelly Aero, LLC is proud to introduce an all-new, FAA/PMA-approved direct replacement line of four- and six-cylinder magnetos. With a foundation of over 35 years of manufacturing FAA/PMA replacement magneto parts as well as overhauling magnetos, the new magneto design “incorporates component improvements that revitalises quality and value for general aviation magnetos,” said Kelly in its press release. “We have manufactured millions of magneto parts and we have overhauled well over 100,000 magnetos over our
history,” said Kelly Aero President & CEO, Jeffrey Kelly. “Introducing a new direct replacement Kelly Magneto further cements our commitment to piston engines in general aviation. It has been 30 years since a new direct replacement magneto line this robust has hit the market, so it is quite an accomplishment by our team.” The new Kelly Magneto will be manufactured at the company’s facility in Montgomery, Alabama, and inventory will begin shipping to its distribution network in September 2021.
